  • Keanu Reeves to Appear in ‘John Wick’ Spin-Off ‘Ballerina’

The ‘John Wick’ universe just continues to expand, with a fourth main movie headed our way in a few months (and giving out cryptic social media clues about… something – probably a trailer) and ‘The Continental’ TV series making its way through post-production after shooting this year.

Attention is now turning to ‘Ballerina’, the movie spin-off of the ‘Wick’ films, which stars Ana de Armas.

Len Wiseman, better known for the likes of the ‘Underworld’ franchise and ‘Live Free or Die Hard’, is in the director’s chair for the movie, which has a script from ‘John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum’ co-writer Shay Hatten.

Lionsgate has announced that Ian McShane, who has played Winston, the complicated manager of the Continental Hotel seen in the movies, will be back to reprise the role.

Collider, meanwhile, has learned that the key figure in the entire franchise – that would be Keanu Reeves, who plays John Wick himself – will also show up in the spin-off.

There is, of course, no information about what Wick might be doing in the movie (besides kicking, punching and shooting people, we can only assume), or how big his involvement will be beyond a potential cameo, since this is really intended to focus on de Armas’ character.

‘Ballerina’ will follow the Ballerina character glimpsed briefly (and there played by Unity Phelan) in ‘Parabellum’ and tracks a young assassin who seeks revenge against the people who killed her family. So… yes, very much a ‘John Wick’ story.

“We’re thrilled to have Ian McShane joining us for a pivotal role in ‘Ballerina’, says producer Basil Iwanyk. “He’s been such an integral part of the franchise since the original John Wick. It’s been fun to have him on this journey as the Wick universe expands.”

There is no statement about Reeves – but then, his presence is probably something the producers were trying to keep quiet a little longer. And the studio has yet to reveal who else is in the cast, but with cameras now rolling, expect more details soon.

‘The Continental’, which focuses on a younger iteration of Winston, is also due on screens in 2023 via Peacock. That show features Mel Gibson, Colin Woodell, Nhung Kate and Katie McGrath in its ensemble.

The fourth ‘Wick’ movie, meanwhile, finds Reeves in familiar territory. “John Wick takes on his most lethal adversaries yet in the upcoming fourth installment of the series,” reads the official logline for the next movie. “With the price on his head ever increasing, Wick takes his fight against the High Table global as he seeks out the most powerful players in the underworld, from New York to Paris to Osaka to Berlin.”

‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ lands in theaters on March 24th next year. ‘Ballerina’ has yet to confirm a release date.

  • Box Office: ‘John Wick: Chapter 3’ Topples ‘Avengers: Endgame’

Box Office: ‘John Wick: Chapter 3’ Topples ‘Avengers: Endgame’

    Lionsgate

John Wick just overthrew “Avengers: Endgame” to become the new box office champ.

John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum” debuted ahead of projections with $57 million, easily beating out “Endgame”s $29.4 million in its fourth weekend.

“Parabellum,” the third installment of the action franchise starring Keanu Reeves as an unstoppable assassin, opened well above the first two film’s first weekends: “John Wick” ($14.4 million) and “John Wick: Chapter 2” ($30.4 million). And it’s already racked up $92 million overseas.

    Marvel

But don’t feel too bad for the Avengers. The monster Marvel hit  has now earned $771 million at the domestic box office, passing “Avatar“‘s $761 million record. The all-time record holder is still “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” with $937 million. Worldwide, “Endgame” just hit $2.6 billion in ticket sales worldwide, inching up on  “Avatar” and its $2.78 billion global record.

    Universal

Audiences were less enthused for “A Dog’s Journey,” the follow-up to “A Dog’s Purpose.” The film, which follows a dog through several reincarnations with several owners, opened in fourth place with $8 million from 3,200 venues. That’s less than half of the $18 million “A Dog’s Purpose” earned in its first weekend in 2017.

    WB/MGM

Meanwhile, YA romance “The Sun Is Also a Star” had an unimpressive $2.6 debut. It earned a “B-” CinemaScore, and a 51% on Rotten Tomatoes. Yara Shahidi (“Grown-ish”) stars as a brainy student who falls for charming exchange student (Charles Melton of “Riverdale”), as her family faces deportation.

Jeff Goldstein, Warner Bros. domestic distribution chief sounded disappointed when he talked to Variety: “YA stories are really challenged theatrically. It feels like in the future, these kinds of movies may only be on streaming services.”

Here are the top 10 estimates for May 17-19, 2019

    1. “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum,” $57,025,000
    2. “Avengers: Endgame,” $29,411,000
    3. “Pokemon Detective Pikachu,” $24,815,000

  • Keanu Reeves Confirms ‘John Wick 3’s Official Title

    John Wick
    Summit Entertainment

War is coming to the world of “John Wick.”

Star Keanu Reeves confirmed the title of the third movie in his assassin franchise, telling ComingSoon.net that it would be called “John Wick 3: Parabellum.”

That’s been the project’s working title, but what does it mean?

“Prepare for war,” Reeves explained.  “It’s part of that famous sentence, ‘Si vis pacem, para bellum,’ which translates as, ‘If you want peace, prepare for war.’”

That war is brewing is no surprise given how “John Wick: Chapter Two ended.” A host of assassins will be coming after him now that there’s a bounty on his head for killing a member of The High Table at the Hotel Continental.

The official synopsis reads: John should have already been executed, except the Continental’s manager, Winston, has given him a one-hour grace period before he’s ‘Excommunicado’ – membership revoked, banned from all services and cut off from other members. John uses the service industry to stay alive as he fights and kills his way out of New York City.

“John Wick 3: Parabellum” opens in theaters May 17, 2019.

  • ‘John Wick 3’ Motion Poster Says He’ll ‘Be Seeing You’ in One Year

You have a date with Mr. Wick one year from today. Mark your calendars accordingly, and spend the next year picking just the right outfit to match his perfect style.

John Wick: Chapter 3” only recently started filming for its opening on May 17, 2019.

On May 17, 2018, the official account marked the one-year countdown with this cool motion poster:

Loving the JW3 mood so far, after those set photos and videos showed Keanu Reeves fighting his way through the Big Apple at night in the rain.

“John Wick 3” picks up right after the second film. Here’s the synopsis:

“John Wick is on the run for two reasons… he’s being hunted for a global $14 million dollar open contract on his life, and for breaking a central rule: taking a life on Continental Hotel grounds. The victim was a member of the High Table who ordered the open contract. John should have already been executed, except the Continental’s manager, Winston, has given him a one-hour grace period before he’s “Excommunicado” – membership revoked, banned from all services and cut off from other members. John uses the service industry to stay alive as he fights and kills his way out of New York City.”

You know when it opens in theaters. Don’t disappoint him.

  • First ‘John Wick 3’ Set Footage Sends Keanu Reeves on the Run in the Rain

John Wick is back in New York City, and this time he’s facing down tourists.

John Wick: Chapter 3” just started filming in the Big Apple, with cinematographer Dan Laustsen sharing photos from the first couple of days on set.

Visitors — or people who happen to live there who noticed “Holy crap, that’s a bloody Keanu Reeves shooting scenes outside” — also shared photos and footage from the area.

That gorgeous second shot sets the mood of John Wick in the rain, but it’s the fans’ footage that shows John on the run. Not that it’s a spoiler of any kind, since that’s the premise of “Chapter 3,” which appears to pick up directly from “Chapter 2.”

    Here’s the movie synopsis:

“John Wick (Keanu Reeves) is on the run for two reasons… he’s being hunted for a global $14 million dollar open contract on his life, and for breaking a central rule: taking a life on Continental Hotel grounds. • ‘John Wick: Chapter 3’ Reveals Plot Synopsis (and Poster, But Not Really)

He’s thinking he’s back — or will be soon, anyway.

One of the many upcoming films with Just Shut Up And Take Our Money status is “John Wick: Chapter 3.” Lionsgate promoted the movie as part of its CinemaCon lineup, sharing a basic plot synopsis, and a promotional poster.

The poster is only barely worth mentioning, since it’s simply the title of the movie and not up to the standard of what we’re sure they’re going to provide before the movie comes out.

But it exists. So here it is, along with the plot synopsis, both via Collider:

“John Wick (Keanu Reeves) is on the run for two reasons… he’s being hunted for a global $14 million dollar open contract on his life, and for breaking a central rule: taking a life on Continental Hotel grounds. The victim was a member of the High Table who ordered the open contract. John should have already been executed, except the Continental’s manager, Winston, has given him a one-hour grace period before he’s ‘Excommunicado’ – membership revoked, banned from all services and cut off from other members. John uses the service industry to stay alive as he fights and kills his way out of New York City.”

The “John Wick” poster game is too strong to consider that a real poster. It’s just a placeholder for CinemaCon.

We’re hoping for something more like this by the time the film opens next year:

It does sound like the story picks up directly from “Chapter 2,” which makes sense and continues the heightened sense of urgency.

Back in June 2017, director Chad Stahelski talked to the Independent about what elements he hopes to explore in “Chapter 3”:

“We are going to put in something about the High Table, how that all works. We’re going to put in something about where John comes from, and where he wants to go. I don’t want to say too much more, but it will be a nice completion to Mr. Wick’s journey.”

Completion. Don’t forget that there’s also a John Wick spinoff series coming to Starz, called “The Continental.”

“Chapter 3” ends the film trilogy on May 17, 2019.

  • Chad Stahelski Is Returning to Direct ‘John Wick: Chapter 3’

Keanu Reeves and director Chad StahelskiGood news, John Wick fans. Chad Stahelski, who co-directed the first “John Wick” film (with an uncredited David Leitch) and went solo on “John Wick: Chapter Two” will be back for “Chapter Three.”

According to That Hashtag Show, filming on the third installment will begin in New York on March 1. Additional locations might include Spain and Russia.

Although their fates seemed in doubt at the end of “Chapter Two,” the site says we’ll see more of the characters played by Common and Ruby Rose. And the Bowery King (Laurence Fishburne) will also be back. Now that Wick (Keanu Reeves) has been banned from The Continental, perhaps he’ll be turning again to the King’s underground network for help.

The villain in “Chapter Three” will be played Hiroyuki Sanada of “The Wolverine,” who previously shared the screen with Reeves in “47 Ronin.”

Stahelski told Collider last year that the plan for “Chapter Three” is not so much to go bigger, but deeper, with what sounds like more of the Bowery King’s operatives.

“We want, not so much to go bigger on the third one, but to show you more of the intricacies of the world… there are all these different subtleties that I skipped over in Number Two, that I’d like to go back to on [‘Chapter Three’] and show you the inner workings of different parts of New York. So rather than massive set pieces, I’d like to show you cooler and more intricate ones… I think it would be a mistake budgetwise and creatively to just go big and blow up a freeway. That’s not our gig. That’s a comic book or a Bond gig. We want to show you cool and intricate details. What are those little details in everyday life? Hopefully we make people look at garbage collectors and cleaner vans and homeless people a little differently now.”

Stahelski will also be directing the Wick spin-off series “The Continental,” set in the world of the high-class hit man hotel chain. Reeves won’t be starring in it, but he is expected to cameo at least once.

“John Wick: Chapter Three” is set to hit theaters May 17, 2019.

  • Rejoice: ‘John Wick: Chapter 3’ Has an Official Release Date

Keanu Reeves is still thinkin’ he’s back! “John Wick: Chapter Three” is officially in the works, with Lionsgate giving the third film in the “John Wick” franchise a release date of May 17, 2019.

Yeah, that’s almost two years from now. But if that’s the amount of time they need to make a great film, please use it wisely.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, screenwriter Derek Kolstad, who wrote the first two films, will return to write “Chapter Three.” The first “John Wick” was directed by Chad Stahelski and David Leitch, with “Chapter Two” directed by Stahelski.

Back in June, director Chad Stahelski talked to the Independent about what elements he hopes to explore in “Chapter Three”:

“We are going to put in something about the High Table, how that all works. We’re going to put in something about where John comes from, and where he wants to go. I don’t want to say too much more, but it will be a nice completion to Mr Wick’s journey.”

Reeves also told Empire how he’d like “John Wick: Chapter Three” to open (SPOILER ALERT):

“I think the opening of the film should be Wick just trying to escape from New York. Literally trying to get off the island. Maybe he asks [Lawrence Fisburne’s character] the Bowery King for help. Maybe John Leguizamo comes and helps me out. ‘John, I can’t do it, you’re excommunicado!’ Maybe the High Table shows up. And then the High Table starts firing guns. And then maybe this kind of thing starts to happen between the High Table and Continental? Maybe John is the activator of this confrontation, and perhaps there’s a war? Wouldn’t that be awesome?!”

Fans can see how the film really opens in May 2019 … unless they decide to move the release date at some point in the next two years.
