    • John Malkovich and Mark Ruffalo are boarding Martin McDonagh’s new movie.
    • ‘Wild Horse Nine’ also has Sam Rockwell and Parker Posey starring.
    • The plot is being kept under wraps.

It’s not hard to see why actors flock to work with British-Irish playwright-turned-screenwriter/director Martin McDonagh.

His work has attracted acclaim and awards on stages and screens, and he himself has an Oscar under his belt for live action short ‘Six Shooter.’

Beyond that, several of those who have starred in his films, including ‘In Bruges,’ ‘Seven Psychopaths,’ ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri’ and 2022’s ‘The Banshees of Inisherin,’ have either been nominated for, or won, their own Oscars.

One of those to actually take the stage is Sam Rockwell, who won the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for ‘Three Billboards,’ has boarded McDonagh’s latest, ‘Wild Horse Nine.’

    uPQKZsWBGkttv4yjVwFty6

And he’s not alone. While Rockwell would be making his third appearance in a McDonagh movie (he also starred in ‘Seven Psychopaths’), the director is also recruiting some new faces (well, to him): John Malkovich, Mark Ruffalo and Parker Posey.

Deadline brings word of Malkovich and Ruffalo, while Variety reports on Posey.

This actually isn’t the first incarnation of the project, though: it originally launched at the American Film Market in 2021, where Searchlight Pictures (which also worked with the director on ‘Three Billboards’ and ‘Banshees’) picked up the rights to the prestige movie with Rockwell attached to star alongside Oscar Isaac and Christopher Walken.

Isaac and Walken have since moved on, mostly due to scheduling we assume.

What’s the story of ‘Wild Horse Nine’?

As with most of McDonagh’s previous movies, the exact plotline is being kept quiet for now. We’d guess that it’ll be his usual blend of quirky characters, smart comedy and memorable emotional turns.

But what we do know is that production kicks off in March in Rapa Nui, the indigenous name for Easter Island, a protected Chilean wildlife area 3,700 kilometers off the country’s coast known for its unrivalled cultural landscape and for being the most remote inhabited island on Earth.

The Rapa Nui National Park continues to maintain a high degree of authenticity, having had minimal intervention since the area’s near-abandonment in the late 19th century.

You just know, then, that the production will have to tiptoe carefully around the area. You hear that, Rockwell? No legendary dancing near the statues!

What else has John Malkovich been working on?

Malkovich will be seen as an oddball, charismatic pop star-turned-cult leader in A24 movie ‘Opus,’ which will be in theaters this coming March and co-stars Ayo Edebiri.

He’s also drawing attention for his brief appearance in the new teaser trailer for Marvel’s ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps.’ His role is under wraps, but the fan theories are coming thick and fast.

In addition to those, he’s part of the cast for action adventure comedy ‘Sacrifice,’ crime mystery ‘In the Hand of Dante’ and animated pic ‘A Winter’s Journey.’

Ruffalo, who was last seen in ‘Poor Things’ (where he scored a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination) next has Bong Joon Ho’s sci-fi satire ‘Mickey 17,’ featuring Robert Pattinson as a cloned worker in space, due to hit theaters in March.

He’s playing an FBI agent in upcoming Max series ‘Task’ and will reprise his role as Dylan Rhodes in ‘Now You See Me 3.’

What does Sam Rockwell have going on?

Rockwell returned to voice reformed criminal Mr. Wolf in DreamWorks Animation’s ‘The Bad Guys’ spin-off short ‘Little Lies and Alibis,’ which played before ‘Dog Man’ in theaters.

And that was just a prelude to ‘The Bad Guys’ sequel, which lands in August this year.

Also on the animated front, he’ll be heard as the main character in ‘The Adventures of Drunky,’ and has a role in Gore Verbinski’s new action comedy ‘Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die,’ in which A man claiming to be from the future arrives at a diner in Los Angeles where he must recruit the precise combination of disgruntled patrons to join him on a one-night quest to save the world from the terminal threat of a rogue artificial intelligence.

The actor also has a variety of other roles in development, including a Merle Haggard biopic and action comedy ‘The Heart.’

What is Parker Posey up to?

Posey’s next role will be on the small screen rather than in theaters, as she’s part of the cast for Season 3 of ‘The White Lotus,’ which starts on HBO on February 16th.

Movie-wise, she’s worked on ‘The Parenting,’ a new horror comedy about a family renting a countryside house for a vacation, only to discover a poltergeist haunting the place.

When will ‘Wild Horse Nine’ be in theaters?

Searchlight Pictures has yet to reveal a release date for the new movie, and McDonagh is not a director to be rushed. But chances are it could end up in awards contention either this year or next.

    • Matt Damon says the ‘Rounders’ team want to make a sequel to the 1998 cult classic.
    • He mentions having discussed it recently with co-star Edward Norton.
    • Rob Lowe, meanwhile, reports there’s new smoke where a St. Elmo’s Fire sequel might be.

Matt Damon will be back on our screens next week in ‘The Instigators’, a new Apple TV+ movie about two unlikely partners in a heist.

But he’s also been thinking about his movie past, and which of them he might re-visit. Turns out, the 1998 cult classic poker drama ‘Rounders’ is ever on his mind. And, if he and the rest of the team behind the movie –– especially writers David Levien and Brian Koppelman –– have their way, we could actually see one.

What was the story of ‘Rounders’?

Matt Damon and Edward Norton in 'Rounders'.

The original movie, which starred Damon, Edward Norton and John Malkovich, explores the underground world of high-stakes poker.

It follows two friends who need to win at high-stakes poker to quickly pay off a large debt –– and for those who don’t know their poker terminology, a rounder is a person seeking high-stakes card games.

Matt Damon on the chances of a ‘Rounders’ sequel

    Matt Damon in 'Rounders'.

This is what Damon told the Rich Eisen Show about his hopes for a new movie:

“The one we’ve been talking about for years, and we’re trying to, and I just saw Edward Norton a few weeks ago, like all of us want to do it is a second ‘Rounders’ movie. So much has happened in the poker world in the last 25 years, it would be fun to catch up with those guys. They had a whole movie ready to go then, but now there’s been a whole another change in the poker world since then, so I haven’t talked to them about what it would be, but I know what they had 10 years ago was fantastic, and I’m sure they could augment and roll with the times and update it to where we are today and make something great.”

No official word yet, of course, so don’t bet on anything happening immediately, or you hopes could fold.

While we’re all in a sequel state of mind, there is some news –– albeit very tentative at this point as he admits –– from Rob Lowe about a potential sequel to 1985’s ‘St. Elmo’s Fire‘.

The original film, co-written and directed by Joel Schumacher, also starred Emilio Estevez, Andrew McCarthy, Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, Andie MacDowell and Mare Winningham in the story of recent graduates from Washington, D.C.’s Georgetown University and how they adjusted to adulthood.

It was one of the classic “Brat Pack” films, and while there have been attempts by Sony in the past to re-visit the story on TV, interest has spiked with the release of McCarthy’s Hulu documentary ‘Brats’ about the titular pack. Sony has reportedly been more actively developing a cinematic return for the characters.

Here’s what Lowe told Entertainment Tonight in an interview:

“We’ve met with the studio, and I have been talking about doing it for about four months. “But it’s very, very, very, very, very early stages. So we will see.”

So, yes… there is development, but don’t break out the suit jackets, knit sweaters and saxophone just yet.

    Who are the Fantastic Four?

Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman, Johnny Storm/The Human Torch and Ben Grimm/The Thing are key players in the pages of Marvel comics, and introduced in 1961. They are among most anticipated characters (alongside the X-Men) to be included in the sprawling Marvel Cinematic Universe.

They’re canonically exposed to galactic radiation and end up cursed/blessed (depending on how you view it) with strange abilities. Reed can stretch his body in a variety of ways, Sue can turn invisible and generate forcefields, Johnny’s body becomes engulfed in flame (and he can fly), while Grimm becomes a rock-covered, incredibly strong creature.

And to be clear here, Pascal will be Reed, Kirby’s playing Sue, Quinn is taking the role of Johnny and Moss-Bachrach will be Ben.

They’ve been brought to screens before –– an unauthorized Roger Corman version floats around the internet after being traded on bootleg videos years ago, and then there were the Fox efforts, 2005’s ‘Fantastic Four’ and 2007 sequel ‘Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer’. They were followed by the dark, gritty and unsuccessful reboot in 2015.

Matt Shakman, one of the key directors on ‘WandaVision’, is overseeing the new film.

This one has been in development for a long time now, with Jeff Kaplan and Ian Springer among those who have worked on drafts of the script. ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ co-writer Josh Friedman is crafting the latest version.

We don’t yet know the story, but the first image and more recent comments from Marvel boss have pointed to them initially existing in a variant universe, and in the past.

Here’s what Kevin Feige said on the Official Marvel Podcast:

“There was another piece of art we released with Johnny Storm flying in the air making a ‘4’ symbol and there was a cityscape in the corner of that image. There were a lot of smart people who noticed that that cityscape didn’t look exactly like the New York that we know, or the New York that existed in the ‘60s in our world. Those are smart observations, I’ll say.”

Hauser’s character is unknown for now, but we did learn that Julia Garner has joined the cast as Shalla-Bal, a version of Silver Surfer.

And that connects directly to Ineson’s casting, as he’ll play Galactus, one of the more powerful character in Marvel lore. While he isn’t always a clear-cut villain (he has in the past, worked with both the Four and the Avengers in the comics), the fact that he consumes whole planets and everything on them usually means that he’s bad news for any hero team he comes into contact with. The Surfer is usually the herald of Galactus who scouts worlds for his next meal.

Marvel Comics’ Galactus. Photo: Marvel Comics.

Whether Ineson will be heading into a voice booth or showing up on set in a performance capture suit a la Thanos actor Josh Brolin may depend on how the movie is portraying the character. He’s often visualized as a giant in a suit and a helmet, though movies have previously chosen to go the weird cloud of energy route.

Ineson is probably best known to genre fans for several projects –– a British actor who played the obnoxious Finchy on the original, UK ‘The Office’, he’s had some choice movies, including in Robert Eggers’ ‘The Witch’, David Lowery’s ‘The Green Knight’ and, more recently in ‘The Creator’ and ‘The First Omen’. He’s reunited with Eggers for ‘Nosferatu’, which will be in theaters on December 25th.

As for Malkovich, we don’t yet know who he’ll be playing.

  • Andrew Scott Stars in the ‘Ripley’ Series Teaser

    Preview:

    • The first ‘Ripley’ teaser is online.
    • Andrew Scott, Dakota Fanning and Johnny Flynn star.
    • The new series lands on Netflix in April.

Given the proliferation of spin-offs and prequels, you might be forgiven, upon seeing the title ‘Ripley’, that the new Netflix series focuses on the earlier days (or somehow, through science fiction trickery, continues the story) of Sigourney Weaver’s Ellen Ripley from the ‘Alien’ movies.

But from a first look at the teaser for the show, it all becomes clear: instead, what we have is the latest adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 novel ‘The Talented Mr. Ripley’.

This one comes from Steven Zaillian, who has quite the resume –– a regular collaborator of Ridley Scott, Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese, he’s also an accomplished filmmaker in his own right, having directed the likes of ‘Searching for Bobby Fischer’ and re-written many scripts in his time.

The story has, of course, already been brought famously to screens by Anthony Minghella in the 1999 film named for the novel, starring Matt Damon, Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow, but this new version appears to take inspiration from other books as well the main ‘Ripley’ tome.

    What’s the story of ‘Ripley’?

Andrew Scott as Tom Ripley in 'Ripley.'

Tom Ripley (Andrew Scott) is a grifter scraping by in early 1960s New York. When he’s hired by a wealthy man to travel to Italy to try to convince his vagabond son (Johnny Flynn’s Dickie Greenleaf) to return home, Tom’s acceptance of the job is the first step into a complex life of deceit, fraud and murder.

Zaillian writes and directs all eight episodes, and from the looks of the first teaser, has shot the whole thing in crisp monochrome to give it some standout style.

The cast for the show also includes Dakota Fanning, Elliot Sumner, Maurizio Lombardi, Margherita Buy and John Malkovich.

Scott, who is garnering plenty of attention thanks to superb work in the likes of ‘All of Us Strangers’, looks set to receive more acclaim for this. And the teaser spotlights an excellent ensemble around him.

All eight episodes of ‘Ripley’ are scheduled to arrive on Netflix on April 4th. If you ask us, given his less-than-truthful nature, April 1st might have made sense, but that doesn’t fit the streamer’s release policy.

  • ‘One Ranger’ Interview: Thomas Jane Talks New Action Thriller

    TZNHGdh6

Opening in theaters on May 5th is the new action thriller ‘One Ranger’ from writer and director Jesse V. Johnson (‘White Elephant’).

What is the plot of ‘One Ranger?’

In ‘One Ranger,’ a gunslinging Texas ranger (Thomas Jane) tracks a bank robber (Dean Jagger) across the desert — only to discover he’s an international terrorist set on detonating a bomb in the heart of London. When the lawman’s partner is killed, he is drawn into partnership with a British intelligence agent (Dominique Tipper) and her boss (John Malkovich) to bring the outlaw to justice — dead or alive.

Who is in the cast of ‘One Ranger?’

‘One Ranger’ stars Thomas Jane (‘Boogie Nights,’ ‘The Punisher,’ ‘The Predator’), Dominique Tipper (‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’), Dean Jagger (‘Game of Thrones’), Patrick Bergin (‘Patriot Games’), and John Malkovich (‘In the Line of Fire,’ ‘Being John Malkovich,’ ‘RED’).

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Thomas Jane about his work on ‘One Ranger,’ the “fish out of water” premise, creating his character, his partnership with Dominique Tipper’s character, the action sequences, working with John Malkovich and the possibilities of a sequel.

Moviefone: To begin with, I thought this character fit you like a glove and is a prefect Thomas Jane role. Did you recognize that when you first read the script, and what were some of the aspects of the character you were excited to explore on screen?

Thomas Jane: I’ve had a lot of fun with creating iconic, classic characters, people that are a little left of center. This guy, just by being alive in 2023, is already a fish out of water even in his own world. We’re fortunate enough to be the opening night film at the Dallas Film Festival, so we’re in Texas Ranger country right now. I feel a real responsibility to creating something that these guys are probably going to watch. It’s probably only a few of them, but they’re going to watch this thing. So, I wanted to make sure not to embarrass myself and create something that honored who they are and what they do, because we need more Texas Rangers in the world right now.

MF: Can you talk about the unlikely partnership that your character forms with Dominique Tipper’s character throughout the events of the film?

TJ: We had this British character in the script and we were batting around ideas, and I had just worked with Dominique for five years on ‘The Expanse,’ and we had a really nice relationship. She’s a good egg. She’s dedicated, and we had the connection already between the two of us. So for us it was creating the antagonism that these two obviously are from opposite sides of the pond, and we wanted to have fun with that. But we knew that underneath was the respect that we both just naturally have for each other, so she ended up being a perfect choice and I’m just glad she said yes. It was a lot of fun but it was a tough shoot.

MF: I know you’ve worked with John Malkovich before, but what was it like for you to reunite with him again and work together on this movie?

TJ: He’s one of those consummate actors that every actor respects and admires. I remember when he did ‘Of Mice and Men’ back in the day, that must have been like the ‘80s when he hit the scene doing theater in Chicago and all that. So he’s always been someone to look up to and its always a thrill when you get to work with that caliber of talent. He always shows up. He showed up and he did his job. He was present, and he was there. A lot of these actors that come in for a short period of time, you can’t really count on them. Sometimes they need cue cards, you know what I mean? Not Malkovich. He shows up to have fun, and we certainly did have a good time. These two characters were allies. They’re on the same side, ostensibly, but they have very different ideas about how to get the job done, and that was fun. We had a respect, but also there was an antagonism and you’re always looking for that kind of thing.

MF: I know that you did a lot of your own stunts and action sequences in this film, do you enjoy doing that and does it help you to stay in character and make those scenes as realistic as possible?

TJ: I’m a huge fan of Harrison Ford and if you watch his movies, even in something like ‘Frantic,’ that Polanski directed. Where his family gets kidnapped and he’s got to go after them, but he’s a regular dude. His physicality is just so great. He can say so much with the character just in the way that he moves his body, whether it’s ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ or something else. I grew up watching this guy, with his physicality. You know that it’s him because of the way he moves. You know that’s not a stunt guy because it’s Harrison Ford and the way he moves his body is telling us that he’s scared but he’s going to do it anyway, that he’s never been in this situation before but he’s figuring it out as he goes along. I always aspire to bring something like that because it always struck me. That’s why I like to have fun with the stunts and doing them.

MF: Finally, have you given any thought to a sequel and is this a character that you would like to play again?

TJ: We were just talking about that. Apparently Lionsgate has the same idea, so we’re going to try to figure that out.

  • Best Movies Featuring Actors Playing Themselves

Oscar winner Nicolas Cage is currently receiving rave reviews for his performance in ‘The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent,’ where he plays well, Nicolas Cage!

But this is certainly not the first time an A-list actor has portrayed themself in a film, and we thought it would be a good time to look back at the the greatest movies featuring actors playing themselves.

For this list, we are only including actors who’ve portrayed themselves in a movie and not athletes, musicians, or other celebrities.

    Let’s begin!

    10. This Is the End (2013)

(L to R) James Franco, Jay Baruchel, Jonah Hill, Craig Robinson, and Seth Rogen in 'This Is the End.'
    Sony Pictures.

While attending a party at James Franco‘s house, Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel and many other celebrities including Jonah Hill, Danny McBride, Michael Cera, Rihanna, Emma Watson, Mindy Kaling, Paul Rudd, Channing Tatum, and Kevin Hart are faced with the apocalypse.

A movie about the apocalypse set in Hollywood was a clever idea, but having the actors play exaggerated versions of themselves is what makes this movie really fun to watch, and Jonah Hill being possessed by a demon is a definite highlight.

    9. Ocean’s Twelve (2004)

Danny Ocean (George Clooney) reunites with his old flame (Julia Roberts) and the rest of his merry band of thieves in carrying out three huge heists in Rome, Paris and Amsterdam – but a Europol agent (Catherine Zeta-Jones) is hot on their heels.

One of the “cons” in the movie that Ocean and his friends are running is based on the idea that Tess Ocean (Roberts) looks remarkably like the actress “Julia Roberts.” Posing as Roberts, Tess helps Linus (Matt Damon) get close to their mark but are interrupted by the actor Bruce Willis (played by Willis), who is friends with the real Roberts.

    8. Cold Souls (2009)

Paul Giamatti (played by Paul Giamatti) is agonizing over his interpretation of ‘Uncle Vanya’ and, paralyzed by anxiety, stumbles upon a solution via a New Yorker article about a high-tech company promising to alleviate suffering by extracting souls. He enlists their services—only to discover that his soul is the shape and size of a chickpea.

Giamatti plays himself as a depressed yet “serious” thespian, which plays off of the actor’s real-life persona, while Emily Watson portrays Paul’s fictional wife, Claire Giamatti.

    7. Always Be My Maybe (2009)

Reunited after 15 years, famous chef Sasha (Ali Wong) and hometown musician Marcus (Randall Park) feel the old sparks of attraction but struggle to adapt to each other’s worlds.

After years apart, Sasha and Marcus reconnect, only to go on a double date with their significant others. The date goes terribly wrong for Marcus when he realizes that Sasha is dating movie star Keanu Reeves (played by Reeves). The actor plays himself with all the coolness and charisma we expect from Reeves, before eventually getting into a brawl with Marcus.

    6. Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle (2004)

Nerdy accountant Harold (John Cho) and his irrepressible friend, Kumar (Kal Penn), get stoned watching television and find themselves utterly bewitched by a commercial for White Castle. Convinced there must be one nearby, the two set out on a late-night odyssey that takes them deep into New Jersey. Somehow, the boys manage to run afoul of rednecks, cops and even a car-stealing Neil Patrick Harris (played by Harris) before getting anywhere near their beloved sliders.

Harris spoofs his own history as a child actor, playing himself as a drug-addicted, has-been child star. It’s also worth noting that ‘Harold & Kumar’ predates ‘How I Met Your Mother,’ and marked the beginning of Harris’ own career resurgence.

    5. My Name is Bruce (2007)

Bruce Campbell in 'My Name is Bruce.'
    Image Entertainment.

B-movie Legend Bruce Campbell (played by Campbell) is mistaken for his character Ash from ‘The Evil Dead‘ trilogy and forced to fight a real monster in a small town in Oregon.

Campbell basically plays himself like his ‘Evil Dead’ character Ash. He’s confident and self-assured when there is no danger, but once trouble begins, he becomes a complete coward. The movie was directed by Campbell, and is a fun spoof on the actor’s own cult status.

    34448

    4. Zombieland (2009)

Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg) has made a habit of running from what scares him. Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson) doesn’t have fears. If he did, he’d kick their ever-living ass. In a world overrun by zombies, these two are perfectly evolved survivors. But now, they’re about to stare down the most terrifying prospect of all: each other.

When Columbus and his friends enter a Beverly Hills mansion, they meet actor Bill Murray (played by Murray), who survived the zombie apocalypse by wearing makeup and pretending to be a zombie himself. The actor even busts-out his old ‘Ghostbusters‘ costume before Columbus accidentally kills him.

    3. I’m Still Here (2010)

‘I’m Still Here’ is a portrayal of a tumultuous year in the life of actor Joaquin Phoenix (played by Phoenix). Directed by Casey Affleck, the film follows the future Oscar-winner as he announces his retirement from a successful film career in the fall of 2008 and sets off to reinvent himself as a hip-hop musician. The film is a portrait of an artist at a crossroads and explores notions of courage and creative reinvention, as well as the ramifications of a life spent in the public eye.

Sold as a documentary, it was later revealed that the entire movie was a fictional spoof. Unknown which it was at the time of release, Phoenix gives a performance playing an exaggerated version of himself that is so believable the entire world really thought that the actor had gone crazy! It all culminated with his infamous appearance on ‘The Late Show with David Letterman,’ which is included in the film.

    51962

    2. The Player (1992)

Directed by Robert Altman, a Hollywood studio executive (Tim Robbins) is being sent death threats by a writer whose script he rejected – but which one?

‘The Player’ could easily have been called ‘Cameo: The Movie.’ While some actors play fictional characters (like Robbins and Whoopi Goldberg), because of the Hollywood setting, dozens of famous actors play themselves in cameo roles like Joel Grey, Anjelica Huston, and John Cusack.

Then, in a film within the film, Bruce Willis and Julia Roberts play themselves, playing fictional characters.

    1. Being John Malkovich (1992)

    'Being John Malkovich'
    USA Films.

One day at work, unsuccessful puppeteer Craig (John Cusack) finds a portal into the head of actor John Malkovich (played by Malkovich). The portal soon becomes a passion for anybody who enters its mad and controlling world of overtaking another human body.

‘Being John Malkovich’ is ‘The Godfather‘ of movies featuring actors playing themselves. Malkovich brilliantly plays-off of his odd and mysterious off-screen persona and gives a dark comedic performance as good as any of his previous dramatic work. it’s also hilarious when it is revealed that his best friend is Charlie Sheen (played by Sheen himself).

  • ‘Space Force’ Season 2 Interviews

Ben Schwartz from Netflix's 'Space Force' Season Two.
Ben Schwartz from Netflix’s ‘Space Force’ Season Two.

Premiering on Netflix February 18th is the second season of the popular comedy ‘Space Force.’ The series is a workplace comedy that revolves around a group of people tasked with establishing the sixth branch of the United States Armed Forces, the United States Space Force.

The series stars Steve Carell (‘Despicable Me’) as General Mark R. Naird, the Space Force’s first Chief of Space Operations. The ensemble cast also includes John Malkovich (‘Con Air’), Ben Schwartz (‘The Afterparty’), Diana Silvers (‘Booksmart’), Tawny Newsome (‘Vacation Friends’), Noah Emmerich (‘Suspicion’), and Jimmy O. Yang (‘Crazy Rich Asians’).

Moviefone recently had the opportunity to speak with actors Ben Schwartz, Jimmy O. Yang, Diana Silvers and Tawny Newsome about their work on ‘Space Force’ season two.

    96tKol17

You can read the full transcript of our interview below, or watch all the interviews in the video played above.

Moviefone: As season two begins, the US Space Force is really having to prove its worth. Ben, as the social media director and the publicist, what is Tony’s biggest challenge this season?

Ben Schwartz: By the way, you’re exactly correct, that is what is happening. Tony’s biggest challenge is trying to spin this thing into something that looks positive. He has to spin this thing into showing that Space Force is worthwhile and keeping these people who work there is worthwhile.

Somehow, now he is the underdog trying to keep the story of what’s happening as positive as possible, to give people hope that this thing could actually be wonderful for our country and things like that. So, there’s a lot more on his shoulders, but also failure is just a skip away. He is very aware that he may have to start looking for another job.

MF: Jimmy, what is Chan dealing with personally and in the workplace this season?

Jimmy O. Yang: I’m not sure of the Chan and Angela possibilities. Will they, or won’t they? Relationships can cause HR complaints, but you know, it’s happening. So, I think he’s a capable scientist. He approaches everything like science, like a math problem. So, he really has to learn how to grow as a human being with his interpersonal relationships.

But it’s not just with Angela. It’s also his bromance with Tony, Ben Schwartz’s character, him being a mentee to John Malkovich’s character, almost mentoring this new intern, all while under the family umbrella of General Naird. It’s all very, very fun with very relatable human family dynamics and circumstances, even though it’s set in the very high stakes and grand scale of ‘Space Force.’

MF: Tawny, does Captain Ali have a larger role this season than she did in the first season?

Tawny Newsome: Yeah, for sure. You know, I think the writers did a great job of not ignoring the fact that she did this wild thing. She literally went to the moon. She was the first black woman on the moon. Then to just come back and kind of jump into everyday life is a big ask. So, she definitely has some tumult going on. I think we got to play with it in a really fun way.

You know, (producer) Greg Daniels had asked me, do you have like something that you do? We need an outlet for her or whatever. I was like, well, I play the drums. Could she be drumming somewhere? He’s like, yes. So, the writers ran with that. Then when I got the scripts later, I was like, oh wait. So, she’s drumming in the middle of the night in an apartment complex. That’s a serial killer move, who does that? That’s truly insane to drum, even to drum in a house, in a regular neighborhood, or in an apartment. So, that told me a lot about where she’s at and the amount of F’s she was giving at that moment, which is less than zero.

MF: Diana, your character has matured a lot between season one and season two. What happened to her between seasons that helped her to grow so much?

Diana Silvers: I think especially at that age, everything is kind of life or death. Because your emotions are heightened, you’re hormonal and there’s just a lot going on. You truly are the center of everything that revolves around you. You are the center of your universe. I think in season one, Erin felt like she wasn’t. She felt like a side character in someone else’s life. I think when, that big event happened with her mom and General Naird, she actually sees that she does matter.

She means something, and she is kind of like the center of not just her universe, but her family’s universe. I think it allowed for her to get grounded again and reground herself. So, going into Space Force and finding a parental figure in Mallory and having like two parents in a way again. Having a support system and being around other adults that genuinely care about her, she was able to explore her own identity and figure out what she wants for herself and where she wants to go with her life.

  • ‘The New Pope’ Teaser Trailer Doubles the Pope Fun

‘The New Pope’ Teaser Trailer Doubles the Pope Fun

    HBO

There may be a “New Pope” in (Vatican) town, but Jude Law is still feeling — and looking  — fine.

HBO released a teaser trailer for the eight-episode follow-up series to 2016’s “The Young Pope.”

The teaser shows Law’s Pope Pius XIII (aka Lenny) strolling along the beach in a blinding white Speedo as women gaze in adoration, while John Malkovich’s new pope grimly walks through the Vatican with various attendants.

Contrary to the sunny outlook for Lenny, he’s actually in a seemingly permanent coma. That’s why Malkovich has been appointed as pontiff.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TAOD50blOKk

But as creator Paolo Sorrentino teased to Variety, “Jude Law’s coma may not be so irreversible. It may have some unexpected novelties, so that two popes can co-exist in the episodes that follow.”

He added, “This creates a disruption. For one billion Catholics, this reawakening can be thought of as a resurrection which within the fictional story that we are telling can lead to new and unpredictable consequences.”

“The New Pope” will screen two episodes at the Venice Film Festival. It does not yet have a premiere date on HBO.
