    • Nic Cage is in talks for ‘True Detective’ Season 5.
    • Issa López is back to run the show.
    • The new season will debut on HBO in 2027.

‘True Detective’ is always a show that has been anchored by big names –– the likes of Woody Harrelson, Matthew McConaughey, Colin Farrell and, most recently, Jodie Foster have been in the lead.

Now, according to The InSneider, Nicolas Cage could become the latest award-winning movie star to play the main role, this time for the fifth season of the crime series.

With Issa López, who ran the successful fourth season –– which saw Foster’s grizzled cop dealing with a mysterious murder in the frozen wastes of Alaska –– back to run the show, we’ll have to wait and see whether Cage actually ends up starring.

What’s the story of ‘True Detective’?

Created by Nic Pizzolatto, the first ‘True Detective’ season saw McConaughey and Harrelson as cops tackling a murder that had cult ties in the south Louisiana bayous and backroads, while the second took place in the fictional city of Vinci, California, where detectives from three different police departments investigating a death tied to corrupt politicians and a powerful businessman.

That season starred Farrell, Rachel McAdams and Vince Vaughn, but didn’t meet the same critical reception.

Things were a little better for Season 3, which saw Mahershala Ali as detective Wayne Hays, investigating a crime involving missing children that spans three decades.

And the fourth, which saw Lopez taking over the reins and Foster joined by the likes of Kali Reis, Christopher Eccleston, Fiona Shaw and John Hawkes for the frosty mystery set as Alaska plunges into a long period of darkness, has been scoring awards all over the place.

Exact plot details for the fifth have yet to be specified. If he does take the role, chances are Cage will be a police officer, but we could also see him playing a criminal.

Cage was last seen in Western pic ‘Gunslingers’ and has a few projects in the way.

He’s playing NFL legend John Madden in the movie about part of his career, which is now shooting.

There’s also satirical drama ‘The Prince’, and while he’ll be heard as Spider-Noir in ‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse’ (due in 2027), he’s also playing the live-action version of the character for a series that will hit next year.

When will ‘True Detective’ Season 5 be on screens?

While HBO has not yet set a premiere date, the show is expected to return in 2027.

What was the story of ‘True Detective: Night Country’?

‘Night Country’ brought us to Ennis, Alaska, where the sun sets on December 17 and doesn’t rise again until after the New Year. On the third day of night, police chief Liz Danvers is called to the scene of a strange maybe-crime: the Tsalal Arctic Research Station, home to eight scientists who spend their days investigating arctic biology, geology, and the impacts of climate change.

But when Danvers arrives, all eight are missing. They’ve left behind their access passes, their cell phones, an uneaten sandwich; it’s as if the entire group has simply vanished into thin air. To solve the case, Detectives Danvers and Evangeline Navarro will have to confront the darkness themselves and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice.

Starring Jodie Foster, Kali Reis, Fiona Shaw and John Hawkes, the season has been warmly received critics, and set viewership records for HBO, with 12.7 million cross platform viewers.

What will the story be for ‘True Detective’ Season 5?

Nothing was included in HBO’s announcement about the new season regarding a storyline. Assuming it keeps to ‘True Detective’ tradition, Season 5 will be a completely new setting with a fresh set of characters.

Here’s what López had to say about the news:

“From conception to release, ‘Night Country’ has been the most beautiful collaboration and adventure of my entire creative life. HBO trusted my vision all the way, and the idea of bringing to life a new incarnation of ‘True Detective’ with Casey, Francesca and the whole team is a dream come true. I can’t wait to go again.”

And here’s HBO head of drama series Francesca Orsi on the renewal:

“Issa Lopez is that one-of-a-kind, rare talent that speaks directly to HBO’s creative spirit. She helmed ‘True Detective: Night Country’ from start to finish, never once faltering from her own commendable vision, and inspiring us with her resilience both on the page and behind the camera. Alongside Jodie and Kali’s impeccable performances, she’s made this installation of the franchise a massive success, we are so lucky to have her as part of our family.”

When will ‘True Detective’ Season 5 be on screens?

HBO has yet to announce a date for Season 5, though since it has yet to be cast or shot, we predict it won’t land until 2025 at the earliest.

Premiering on Max January 14th, ‘True Detective: Night Country’ offers a very different spin on the usual mystery story, one that draws upon the eternal clash between modern progress and native lands, between parents and children, and between the forces of right and wrong, even as the main characters sometimes cross those lines.

Built around a typically excellent performance by Jodie Foster, in what might be her most iconic law enforcement role since Clarice Starling of ‘The Silence of the Lambs’, the new ‘True Detective’ pivots away from creator Nic Pizzolatto’s seasons of the show to focus instead on a stranger mystery –– time might have been a flat circle in the first season, but here it is frozen in ice.

Does ‘True Detective: Night Country’ find the light in the darkness?

Kali Reis and Jodie Foster in HBO's 'True Detective: Night Country.'
(L to R) Kali Reis and Jodie Foster in HBO’s ‘True Detective: Night Country.’ Photo: Michele K. Short/HBO.

As mentioned, this will feel very different to past ‘True Detective’ seasons. While the show has generally re-invented itself with each iteration (from the Louisiana-set first to the California-inflected second and Ozarks-featuring third), incoming showrunner Issa López maintains what worked about particularly the first and third seasons while imbuing the fourth with her own particular viewpoint and energy.

And filming in Iceland –– standing in for the fictional Alaskan town of Ennis –– gives the new season a distinctly different look too, its dark, snowy night-time setting upping the stakes for the officers and locals as they try to figure out what exactly is going on in this frosty, close-knit community.

‘True Detective: Night Country’ : Script and Direction

Kali Reis and Jodie Foster in HBO's 'True Detective: Night Country.'

In addition to running the show (and having a hand in all the scripts alongside writers Alan Page Arriaga, Namsi Khan, Chris Mundy, Katrina Albright and Wenonah Wilms), López directs all six episodes of this new season.

And the result is a hauntingly consistent look for the story, which makes full use of the gloomy, doomy landscape against which the mystery takes place. This is a haunting and haunted place, which makes for a fascinating backdrop for a neo-noir. The writers’ minds are full of conflict and survival, and subplots about protests against a local mining operation and the strange case of the frozen lab staff give the narrative plenty of weight.

    ‘True Detective: Night Country’: Performances

Jodie Foster in HBO's 'True Detective: Night Country.'
Jodie Foster in HBO’s ‘True Detective: Night Country.’ Photo: Michele K. Short/HBO.

Foster, in a very rare TV performance (she’s primarily been a director on the small screen) and, in concert with López’ writing, her Liz Danvers is a fine creation, weather-beaten and careworn, not afraid to bend the rules to do her job and with little time for the fantastical theories others suggest as to what happened to the victims in her cases.

She’s also dealing with her step-daughter, Leah (Isabella Star LaBlanc), a young woman caught between her native heritage, her anger at the world and her own new romance. Their dynamic is complicated and truthful, and while it sometimes slips into expected teen-parent cycles, it’s always involving.

But while this is often the Jodie Foster show, that’s not to say that the rest of the ensemble doesn’t match up to her level. Kali Reis is the intense, torn trooper Evangeline Navarro, once a close colleague of Danvers whose relationship with her after a particularly tragic case, is now frostier than the air they breathe. Reis brings a damaged vulnerability to the role, cloaked in a steel attitude towards her job and those who would hurt her family. She certainly gets her moments to shine.

John Hawkes in HBO's 'True Detective: Night Country.'
John Hawkes in HBO’s ‘True Detective: Night Country.’ Photo: Michele K. Short/HBO.

While Reis might be less familiar to some, there is also a host of “it’s-that-person” character actors to bring smaller parts to life with their usual care and attention. John Hawkes plays Hank Prior, one of Danvers’ direct colleagues, whose approach to law enforcement is decidedly more macho. He oozes toxic masculinity (which Hawkes portrays perfectly despite his wiry frame), his manner nevertheless hiding his own damage, yearning for love he can’t quite make work.

Then there’s Christopher Eccleston (best known for the likes of ‘Doctor Who’ and ‘The Leftovers’), as Danvers’ superior, with whom she has a complicated relationship. He’s a perfectly-judged mix of authority figure and ridiculous doofus. Fiona Shaw, meanwhile, is Rose Aguineau, who lives on the outskirts of town and appears to see visions of the dead. It’s a role that Shaw fully engages with.

Beyond the core cast, there is a tapestry of bro-style hunters and some compelling native characters, who appear to offer clues to what is really going on.

‘True Detective: Night Country’: Final Thoughts

Bold and melancholic, with some wonderfully pitched performances and well-realized detail, the new run of ‘True Detective’ is a more than worthwhile addition to the show’s canon. It’s great to see Jodie Foster given another meaty role to get her teeth into, and she’s aided by a top-notch ensemble.

It’s certainly not going to be comfort watching, but then do you expect that from a ‘True Detective’ tale?

  • ’Nyad’ Press Conference with Annette Bening and Jodie Foster

Annette Bening as Diana Nyad and Jodie Foster as Bonnie Stoll in 'Nyad.'

Nyad,’ which enjoyed its world premiere at the 50th Telluride Film Festival on September 1st, before its theatrical run in select theaters on October 20th, will be available to stream on Netflix beginning November 3rd.

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of attending a virtual press conference for ’Nyad’ with Oscar-nominee Annette Bening and two-time Oscar-winner Jodie Foster.

Here are 10 things we learned from the conversation, edited for clarity and length.

    1) Bening Crafted a Charm Offensive to Help Woo Foster

Jodie Foster as Bonnie Stoll and Annette Bening as Diana Nyad in 'Nyad.'
(L to R) Jodie Foster as Bonnie Stoll and Annette Bening as Diana Nyad in ‘Nyad.’ Photo: Kimberley French/Netflix ©2023.

Even though it’s her character’s name who gives ‘Nyad’ its title, Bening knew that she needed a top-shelf screen partner for the movie. But she wasn’t convinced that Foster would join her.

Annette Bening: When they told me they were gonna ask Jodie to do it, I said, “She’ll never do it. Like, she should play Diana.” Of course, she came over to my house and she gave me a little once-over — she’s, like, checking me out. We’d met but we didn’t “know each other,” know each other. But we just kinda clicked, I think, pretty well. Of course, my whole objective was to get her to do (the film). Jodie is always the smartest person in the room, which is not an easy thing to be in life, but she is. She’s always the smartest, she has more experience than anyone, and she’s a very fine director, so I knew that I was getting this incredible package. So I tried to be as agreeable and as charming as I could! And what really makes the movie is Jodie.

    2) Foster Already Knew The Character Whom She Portrays

Jodie Foster as Bonnie Stoll in 'Nyad.'
Jodie Foster as Bonnie Stoll in ‘Nyad.’ Photo: Kimberley French/Netflix ©2023.

Sometimes it can be overwhelming to dive into the challenge of portraying a real-life figure. But Foster had a leg up.

Jodie Foster: You know, I knew Diana and Bonnie from Christmas parties at friends’ houses and stuff. I would run into them, just the gang, and I just loved them immediately. I love both of them, and thought they were such characters. So that was my first connection, really — knowing them a bit personally. Bonnie [is] such a character and so eccentric. I adore her.

    3) Bening and Foster Didn’t Mind Co-Directors Vasarhelyi and Chin Making Their Narrative Feature Debut

Director Jimmy Chin, Jodie Foster as Bonnie Stoll, director Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Annette Bening as Diana Nyad on the set of 'Nyad.'
(L to R) Director Jimmy Chin, Jodie Foster as Bonnie Stoll, director Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Annette Bening as Diana Nyad on the set of ‘Nyad.’ Photo: Kimberley French/Netflix ©2023.

Co-directors Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin were no stranger to tales of improbable human endurance and accomplishment, having won an Academy Award for their 2018 documentary ‘Free Solo,’ about rock climber Alex Honnold. That special perspective allayed any concerns their award-winning stars might’ve had about them directing actors.

Jodie Foster: Jimmy and Chai both have this experience with extreme sports and the personality and mindset that that takes, which is something that I didn’t 100 percent understand but I think that I was so curious about. You know, how does somebody become an athlete, and what do they give up in their life? What do they sacrifice in order to be excellent, in order to come this close to death and sort of cheat death every time? So, I think that that’s a very special point-of-view that they both brought to the picture — especially Jimmy, who’s been climbing mountains and hanging by his fingers for a number of years.

    4) It’s All About the Friends We Made Along the Way

Jodie Foster as Bonnie Stoll and Annette Bening as Diana Nyad in 'Nyad.'
(L to R) Jodie Foster as Bonnie Stoll and Annette Bening as Diana Nyad in ‘Nyad.’ Photo: Kimberley French/Netflix ©2023.

Despite its portrayal of the incredible extremes to which someone goes in pursuit of doing something never before done, the film’s stars also viewed it, crucially, as a tale of female friendship.

Jodie Foster: They’re a package, you know? I think that that’s so lovely about the film. The thing that really drove me to it was this idea of two 60-year-old women who didn’t end up having kids. They were, you know, lovers early on, but friends forever, and that relationship and that friendship — you know, we say, “Only friends, friends are everything” — that these two women couldn’t have done it without each other, on both sides, that they completed each other, for me I thought that was really beautiful.

Annette Bening: It’s such an important thing, to see this. I know a lot of women that I know feel this incredible friendship. Jodie and I have become friends. I mean, how we keep going in life is our friends. Yes, we have our partners, we have our kids, we have our loved ones, but there’s something about friendship that is so powerful, and it’s so much a part of this story, and it’s not always easy to dramatize. So, within the context of the swim, it’s kind of like the perfect way to dramatize why people need each other, how we need each other, and what it is we do for each other.

    5) Filming Left Its Stars Moved Too

Annette Bening as Diana Nyad in 'Nyad.'

They have many decades of experience between them, but Bening and Foster aren’t at all jaded and cynical. In fact, the production of ‘Nyad’ left each of them emotionally moved on occasion — especially in key moments when watching their costar reaffirmed that acting is frequently about reacting.

Annette Bening: There’s a question at one point in the story as to whether Bonnie will stick with Diana or not. It’s an important part of the narrative, and the way that Jodie played the scene that followed that question really got me. When it’s all there in your partner, then all you have to do is be present and breathe and watch and listen.

Jodie Foster: I don’t want to ruin the movie because I don’t want to tell anybody what happens, but there is a last scene in the film that just really got me. You know, watching that, and after this whole, long film that we’ve done, after an entire year of training (by Annette) to play Diana, the transformation that she went through, the hardship, being in the water constantly, to watch her come out of that water, that was just so moving to me. I didn’t realize that that was gonna happen in the moment.

    6) The Film’s Most Challenging Aspect Is Probably Not What You Think

Annette Bening as Diana Nyad in 'Nyad.'

Given the physical demands of portraying attempts at the record-setting swim that serves as the spine of its narrative, one might assume that training was the most challenging aspect of ‘Nyad.’ Not so, says Bening.

Annette Bening: Part of this story that we really felt was incredibly delicate and important to get right is that Diana was sexually abused by her swim coach all through high school. This is a very common thing in women’s sports, whether it’s tennis or swimming or gymnastics or whatever — a lot of girls, young women, are taken advantage of by their coaches, for obvious reasons. So we wanted that to be in the story, but the right way, because we didn’t wanna oversimplify it. It’s obviously such a delicate matter. So there was a moment when Diana does talk about that a little bit in the movie, when I talk about it, and that was really important to me that we tried to just touch on all the complexities of what that experience is like for people who go through that as kids.

    7) ‘Nyad’ Is No Hagiography

Hyper-successful athletes are almost by definition prone to a level of extreme tunnel-vision and competitive zeal — whether against others or, in the case of long-distance swimming, against themselves — that can render their personalities, at times, quite prickly. To that end, Bening thought it important to be able to use Nyad’s rough exterior, with flinty stares and curt responses, as a way to showcase her hidden vulnerability and insecurities.

Annette Bening: I find [Diana] absolutely touching, I did get to know her quite well, and I adore her. And like a lot of very, very strong-willed people, she has an inner softness and vulnerability (that she often hides). I was interested in that, and that is part of our job when we’re playing people. But what’s wonderful about acting, one thing I really love is when you’re playing someone, you are their advocate — you are there, fighting for them, for what they want, for what they need, given the circumstances of their lives. So Diana let us take some liberties in telling the story because I knew that we needed a character arc, and so we played around a little bit with the facts. But she’s an enormously charming person, she just takes over a room, she’s charismatic. But, yeah, she’s strong. How could you swim for 53 hours and not have an unusual personality? So she does have that very strong will, but (it also masks) inner softness, an incredible intellect.

    8) Bening Is a Better Swimmer Now Than When She Shot the Film

Annette Bening as Diana Nyad in 'Nyad.'

Bening, naturally, underwent a rigorous training regimen to get ready for her role. She aced her preparation, but claims she’s even an even better swimmer now, over a year after production wrapped.

Annette Bening: I’d been in the water a lot as a kid. I was a scuba diver. I worked on a boat. I was in the ocean a lot. I love the ocean. I feel very comfortable in it. But I hadn’t really ever been a swimmer, you know? Not like Diana is. So, I thought, you know, how hard can it be? Like, I’m in good shape, I’m on my bike, I do yoga. Then I got in the water and it was like, “Oh, shit.” I mean, I was alone. I had a moment of like, “Wait a minute, oh my God, how am I gonna do this?” It was a come-to-Jesus moment. So, anyway, I did have a great coach named Rada Owen, who was an Olympian herself and is a coach now. Rada was the perfect coach for me. First of all, she still loves to swim. A lot of athletes, because they’ve spent so much time doing what they’re doing, they get burned out, they don’t wanna swim anymore. Diana doesn’t swim anymore. But Rada still loves to swim. She’s six feet tall and she’s amazing and she also just has this lightness of spirit. She knows how to work people hard but also not emotionally exhaust you. So she got in the pool with me, she started teaching me the (freestyle) stroke and had me swim, and she said, “Oh, yeah, you’re gonna be fine.” I’m a better swimmer today than I was when I even made the film. Because I still swim, and I love it. It’s like anything when you practice it, you find a few moments of flow, and those moments are worth all of the work.

    9) Foster Did a Lot of Physical Preparation Too

Jodie Foster as Bonnie Stoll in 'Nyad.'

While ‘Nyad’ focuses on its titular subject’s swim, Stoll was a former professional racquetball player, and Foster felt an obligation to immerse herself in the type of physical activity that would reflect that lived experience.

Jodie Foster: I like to feel what the character feels, and I like to think the body is sort of the gateway to everything. So maybe I overdid that part of it, I guess, because I was into it. I was like, “Bonnie, you’re gonna look good, dammit, you’re gonna look good!” So there was a lot of chicken involved and a lot of little small meals and all that sort of stuff. I went to the gym a lot and had to suck in my stomach a little bit when I was wearing the jogger bra, I’ll admit it. But I wanted Bonnie to look good, you know?

    10) Sometimes the Best CGI is the Simplest CGI

Despite all of Bening and Foster’s joint physical preparation, moments of action in one’s 60s sometimes still has a limit — as manifested in ‘Nyad’ in a competitive ping-pong sequence.

Jodie Foster: With the ping-pong, you know, we actually didn’t do too badly, I’d say.

Annette Bening: We were pretty evenly matched, I think. I was slightly better.

Jodie Foster: But there is one moment where we did a lot of this in the air (mimes wild free swings), and then they put little balls in there (digitally). Come on, we gotta tell ’em — we can’t cheat!

Annette Bening: We actually were gonna make [the scene] racquetball, but then we played racquetball for 10 minutes.

Jodie Foster: Then both of us were like, “My knees, my knees! I can’t do it.”

  • Jodie Foster Starring in True Detective Season 4

    Jodie Foster in 'The Mauritanian'
    STXfilms

It looked for a while there like ‘True Detective’ might not be coming back. After all, while Season 3, which starred Mahershala Ali and Stephen Dorff rebounded in critical response and audience embrace after the stumbles of Season 2, there always seemed to be something keeping it from returning – not the least of which was the schedule of creator Nic Pizzolatto.

There’s big news, then, that the HBO show will indeed return, albeit with a new creative team. And a big star: Jodie Foster is aboard to lead the cast and serve as one of the executive producers for what will be called ‘True Detective: Night Country’.

This new season will focus on Detectives Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro who are looking to solve the case of six men that operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanishing without a trace, when the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska.

The pair will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice.

While Foster (no slouch in creative endeavors) will be involved, the real driving force behind the scenes will be writer and director Issa López, who directed one previous episode of the show, but is taking over the reins. She replaces the show’s creator, Nic Pizzolatto, who worked on the previous three seasons.

López will work alongside ‘Shining Girls’ Alan Page Arriaga, while ‘Moonlight’ and ‘The Underground Railroad’s Barry Jenkins is a producer.

‘True Detective’ is no stranger to big name stars – in addition to the aforementioned Ali and Dorff, the show has seen the likes of Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Colin Farrell, Taylor Kitsch, Rachel McAdams, and Vince Vaughn all feature in the cast.

And it has always functioned as an anthology series, switching locales each time. The wintery wilds of Alaska is certainly a fascinating (and potentially deadly) place in which to set a mystery.

More surprising is Foster’s desire to lead a TV series. She’s been a movie star and director for years, and while she’s guested on the likes of ‘Frasier’, ‘The X-Files’ and ‘The Simpsons’, her small screen work has largely been behind the camera, including directing ‘Orange Is The New Black’, ‘Black Mirror’ and ‘Tales From The Loop’.

You must stretch back to her work as a child on shows such as ‘Gunsmoke’, ‘My Three Sons’ and ABC’s TV spinoff of ‘Paper Moon’ to find more regular on-camera appearances.

Still, in this era of prestige TV and movie stars anchoring shows from deep-pocketed streaming services, it’s perhaps not that surprising that she’d eventually step in front of the camera for a new starring role. And the chance to be creatively involved on a deeper level than even directing was surely a draw.

There is no launch date for ‘True Detective: Night Country’ just yet, which is not shocking since it has yet to start shooting.

  • 11 Things You Never Knew About ‘Maverick’ on its 25th Anniversary

11 Things You Never Knew About ‘Maverick’ on its 25th Anniversary

    Warner Bros.

Maverick” may not be the most critically acclaimed Western released in the ’90s, but you’ll be hard-pressed to find a more enjoyable trip back to the Wild West and the days of rascals, card sharks and lawmen. Celebrate the 25th anniversary of this it Western by learning some fun facts about the making of “Maverick.”

    1. “Maverick” is an adaptation of the 1957-1962 TV series of the same name, which starred James Garner as Bret Maverick.

    Warner Bros.

    2. Garner played a very different role in this remake as Marshal Zane Cooper. The name is an homage to influential Western writer Zane Grey and actor Gary Cooper.

    3. The film includes cameo appearances from many popular country music singers, including Reba McEntire, Waylon Jennings, Hal Ketchum, Carlene Carter and Vince Gill.

    Warner Bros.

    4. Paul Newman was originally offered the role of Bret Maverick, but ultimately turned it down when the producers failed to meet his salary requirements.

    5. The steamboat is named “Lauren Belle” in tribute to director Richard Donner‘s wife, producer Lauren Shuler Donner. She also has a cameo in the film as “Mrs. D,” one of the maids in the bath house.

    6. The ship used for the Lauren Belle was a fully functional stern-wheel tugboat borrowed from the Oregon Maritime Museum.

    Buena Vista Pictures

    7. Julia Roberts, Meg Ryan and Michelle Pfeiffer were all considered for the part of Annabelle.

    8. Annabelle’s clumsiness wasn’t actually written in the original screenplay. Donner was inspired to add that element to the character after Jodie Foster fell out of a stagecoach when co-star Mel Gibson failed to help her down.

    Warner Bros.

    9. “Maverick” includes numerous callbacks to the “Lethal Weapon” series, including Danny Glover‘s cameo appearance and the scene where Mel Gibson’s character discovers his shirt has shrunk in the wash.

    10. The film includes a deleted sequence where Maverick attempts to demonstrate his supposedly magical card-playing abilities to a hermit played by Linda Hunt. Donner opted to cut this material because he felt it didn’t mesh with the rest of the film.

    Warner Bros.

    11. Another deleted scene features musician Alice Cooper in a cameo role as the town drunk. Rock on!

    Global Road Entertainment

Jodie Foster loved the Icelandic film “Woman at War” so much that she has decided to make an English-language version of it.

The two-time Academy Award winner plans to star in and direct a remake of the 2018 film, Deadline reports. She’ll take on the role played by Halldóra Geirharðsdóttir in the original. However, her version will be an “American imagining,” she said.

“Woman at War” was directed by Benedikt Erlingsson from a script he wrote with Ólafur Egilsson. It follows a music teacher named Halla who secretly partakes in environmental activism, namely working to sabotage the local aluminum industry. When she finds out that she’s been approved to adopt a baby girl from Ukraine, though, she decides to stop — but not before one big, final act.

Foster said that she “can’t wait to play [Halla],” according to Deadline. She described the character as “a warrior for the planet” with some “serious mishaps along the way.” Although Foster didn’t reveal how exactly she’ll change the story, she did say it would be set in the American West.

Foster has directed five films so far, starting with 1991’s “Little Man Tate”; her most recent was 2016’s “Money Monster.” She’s also, of course, appeared in many films, with “Hotel Artemis” hitting theaters earlier this year.

Original “Woman at War” producer Marianne Slot and Foster are teaming up on the remake with their respective production companies, Slot Machine and Egg Pictures.

Please Watch Jodie Foster, Nick Offerman, Hilary Swank Audition for ‘Batgirl’

    Conan, Nick Offerman
    TBS

As long as they don’t growl “F*ck Batman” like that ingrate Robin

The CW has a “Batwoman” series coming up, and Joss Whedon used to be making a “Batgirl” movie for DC.

Conan O’Brien jumped in on all the Batlady talk with nice little video taking us behind-the-scenes for the “Batgirl” auditions:

Auditioning stars included Kristen Schaal, Tig Notaro, Maria Bamford (upside down, going Method), Nicole Byer, and even Nick Offerman — who was pissed that they were only looking at women for the role.

Nick Offerman: “Of course. This is the same bullsh*t I got on ‘Ocean’s 8.’ I bet Sandy Bullock gets this one too!”

Heh. Sandra Bullock didn’t even show. But Hilary Swank did. She held up one of her Oscars to say “This is my audition right here.” BOOM.

Jodie Foster later auditioned, asking if Swank brought her Oscar as her audition.  Told yes, she brought out her own funky knight statue.

Wanda Sykes later auditioned, aking if Jodie Foster brought out her “weird” knight statue.

Thomas Middleditch also auditioned, but just for the role of a waiter.

Conan played favorites, and maybe he’s right:

It’s tough to top Ron Swanson. Hilary Swank might want to up her argument by bringing in her second Oscar for a second audition.

  • Jodie Foster: These ‘$200 Million Movies About Superheroes’ Are Ruining Viewing Habits

Detail of popcorn in a bucket and two tickets over a white background. Tickets on focus and shallow DOFBlockbusters are the new fracking!

Jodie Foster came of age in the 1970s, an era known for thriving independent films and auteur creativity, with her breakthrough role coming in Martin Scorsese’s “Taxi Driver.” So it’s not too surprising to hear the two-time Oscar winner isn’t that into the modern superhero blockbuster craze. She’s doing a lot of directing now, including the “Arkangel” episode of “Black Mirror” Season 4, but she doesn’t sound interested in joining the list of Marvel/DC/Lucasfilm directors.

In a new interview with Radio Times, Foster bemoaned movie studios’ obsession with making big bucks with big blockbusters (and their endless sequels), often at the expense of quality:

“Going to the movies has become like a theme park. Studios making bad content in order to appeal to the masses and shareholders is like fracking – you get the best return right now but you wreck the earth.

It’s ruining the viewing habits of the American population and then ultimately the rest of the world. I don’t want to make $200 million movies about superheroes.”

That said, when asked if she would ever consider making a movie about a superhero, Foster didn’t completely shut out the idea. She said she’d only consider it if they had “really complex psychology.”

Money Monster Australian Premiere - ArrivalsMany superheroes at least claim to be complex. Bruce Wayne might qualify. But it’s rare to see anyone make a superhero movie these days that isn’t in the $200 million budget range, along with hefty marketing and merchandising budgets. It’s never just about the storytelling.

There are smaller films out there, and they often get attention this time of year during awards season. But if you don’t live in a major city those films can be tough to find. Instead, the local multiplex is more likely to have blockbusters playing on multiple screens. Any smaller film that makes the cut may get a week or two to compete before being pushed out. That’s based not just on what fans want to pay to see, but what’s put in front of them as an option to see. If you haven’t even heard of a smaller movie like “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” you’re less likely to see it than one you know more about.

But since superhero movies are extremely popular — and “Avengers: Infinity War” is considered the most anticipated movie of 2018 — Foster’s words may just be dismissed.
