Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Amy Schumer and Jillian Bell about making ‘Kinda Pregnant’, Schumer’s work on the script, their characters’ long friendship, working together and improvising on set, the lie Schumer’s character tells, and if she’s ever told a lie that big in her own life.

You can read the full interview below or click on the video player above to watch our interviews with Schumer, Bell, Will Forte and Brianne Howey.

Moviefone: To begin with, Amy, can you talk about your first reaction to the screenplay and as a writer what were some of the elements you wanted to add to the film?

Amy Schumer: My first reaction was this is an incredible premise that felt like a classic comedy that I couldn’t believe hadn’t been made yet. I wanted to ground it a little more in truth about how friends talk to each other, and the circumstances. I wanted my character to be believable that you could like her and the circumstances to be possible, and just add bigger set pieces and make this a big comedy. I saw this as just huge.

MF: Jillian, can you talk about Lainy and Kate’s long friendship and how it is tested through the course of the movie?

Jillian Bell: Lainy and Kate have been friends since childhood, and they’ve probably had some bumps along the road, but this is probably the biggest one. I just think that it really showcased something that we don’t see often in film, which is truly what happens when you go through the hardest challenge in a friendship and overcoming that and seeing the ugliness of that and seeing it through and being like, “Great. Now that you’ve gotten that out, that you’re very jealous and want to have your own kid, where do we go from here? How do we keep this friendship on the tracks? Because I love you and your worth it.” They need each other. I think especially, I mean, I’ve never been through a pregnancy before, but in thinking of wanting that in my future, I would need my girlfriends to be around me as much as possible just to keep my sanity, it feels like.

MF: In the film, Lainy tells a big lie that spins out of control. Amy, can you talk about that, and have you ever told a lie that spiraled out of control and how did you handle that?

AS: I’m sure. I’m such a liar. I am sure I’ve told so many lies, but that’s the thing. I can’t really remember. I don’t have a great memory, so I really keep it honest these days because I can’t remember. But I just think there’s nothing funnier than lying. Seeing somebody in the moment having to lie just really gets me, and it’s so fun to play with. Also, it’s just something to keep up. The tension of the bump and then the faking it is just such a roller coaster to have to ride, and I feel like it’s such a good hook. I think people really hook into it and want to know how is this going to happen? How is this going to play out? Yeah, so the lie is what the whole movie is, at its core.

MF: Finally, Jillian, how much fun was it working with Amy and creating the friendship between these characters, and was there time for improvisation on set?

JB: There were so many moments to improvise and play and have fun, and Amy supported that throughout the entire process. I wish I could make every movie with Amy Schumer. I truly want to. It’s just easy and we have so much fun together. It was the best.

AS: Let’s just make every movie together. I’ll sign a contract right now. I couldn’t even look at Jillian a lot of times. She would just set me off and I couldn’t stop, and I would have to look right past her. But we have this whole sequence that isn’t even in the movie anymore where we were going, “You’re off.” And she’s like, “No, you’re off.” I don’t know, just improvising. It was heaven.

  • Movie Review: ‘Reunion’

Lil Rel Howery, Jillian Bell, Nina Dobrev, Michael Hitchcock and Jamie Chung in 'Reunion'.

Available on digital beginning June 28th, ‘Reunion’ feels more like it escaped rather than released, and the results clearly speak as to why.

Despite some game performances from usually funny people, the movie can’t overcome the stale feeling that this is a half-hearted stab at both being a comedy and murder mystery that offers little in the way of invention.

    Is ‘Reunion’ Worth Attending?

Michael Hitchcock, Jillian Bell, Nina Dobrev, Jamie Chung and Lil Rel Howery in 'Reunion'.
(L to R) Michael Hitchcock, Jillian Bell, Nina Dobrev, Jamie Chung and Lil Rel Howery in ‘Reunion’. Photo: Republic Pictures.

It is tempting to suggest that ‘Reunion’ was birthed when someone watched the Apple TV+ comedy thriller series ‘The Afterparty’ (created by Phil Lord and Chris Miller and boasting both clever plotting and a quality cast) and decided, “we could do that, but on a skimpier budget.” Yet this “new” release was actually filmed back in 2021, so at least it has that in its defense.

Still, any cinematic prosecutor could still point to the fact that it has mostly sat on a shelf since then, finally seeing a quiet release on digital initially overseas back in April. Can you, hand on heart, truly say you knew this was actually coming out?

And if that sounds overly negative, the movie itself is not without entertainment value, but that’s mostly thanks to a cast who throw themselves into trying to make some mostly unfunny, not-so-thrilling material work.

    Script and Direction

    Cassandra Blair in 'Reunion'.
Cassandra Blair in ‘Reunion’. Photo: Republic Pictures.

Written by Willie Block and Jake Emanuel, this new murder mystery recycles many of the tropes you might expect from the genre. It gathers a group together (in this case, a 20-year high school reunion), introduces the various personalities and starts to reveal the bubbling resentments among the former school mates. Some have gone on to big success, others are struggling to get their lives in order, one is a weird creepy type… You’ll honestly end up feeling like you’ve seen and heard it all before, just in vague variations.

And once the murder mystery kicks in (cue a power failure and a prime target ending up dead), things don’t improve by much, going through the motions of spotlighting potential suspects before wrapping it all up with some final twists you’ll likely see coming anyway.

Director Chris Nelson has mostly specialized in romantic comedies, and has an eye for a solid comedy cast, which is one of the few saving graces here. For the most part, the movie’s style is basic, letting the performances carry it. Yet there are moments where the editing in particular is sloppy, certain scenes coming out of nowhere with little context.

    Performances

Lil Rel Howery, Jillian Bell, Billy Magnussen, Nina Dobrev, Chace Crawford, Jamie Chung and Michael Hitchcock in 'Reunion'.

‘Reunion’, as we’ve previously mentioned, has some known and respected comedy talents, but rarely uses them as well as it might.

Lil Rel Howery as Ray Hammond

    Lil Rel Howery in 'Reunion'.
Lil Rel Howery in ‘Reunion’. Photo: Republic Pictures.

Lil Rel Howery leans into his usual nervy, enthusiastic style, playing Ray, whose life hasn’t ended up where he might like. He’s not as successful, he’s still single and overall he’s looking at the reunion as a change to both fix the mistakes of the past and forge a better future. He’s our real way into the story, but even in Howery’s hands, Ray isn’t a particularly watchable personality. There are odd moments such as him taping beer bottles to his hands, which seems out of character for him.

    Billy Magnussen as Evan West

Billy Magnussen, and Jamie Chung in 'Reunion'.
(L to R) Billy Magnussen, and Jamie Chung in ‘Reunion’. Photo: Republic Pictures.

Billy Magnussen’s Evan is a former high school football star still nursing bitterness over an injury that ended his potential career even before it began. These days, he’s a local cop, and still friends with Ray (though their connection can be fractious) and has his own reasons for attending the event. Magnussen certainly gives his all to the role, but he’s often left struggling.

    Jamie Chung as Jasmine Park

    Jamie Chung in 'Reunion'.
Jamie Chung in ‘Reunion’. Photo: Republic Pictures.

Jamie Chung plays a reporter who went to school with the others and had her own issues during her time there. She’s a reliably funny and charming performer here, but despite a little depth added later on, doesn’t have too much to go on and mostly sparks off of Magnussen and Howery.

    Chace Crawford as Mathew Danbury

    Chace Crawford in 'Reunion'.
Chace Crawford in ‘Reunion’. Photo: Republic Pictures.

Chase Crawford, who has proved his comedy chops many times over on ‘The Boys’ as The Deep is here left with a mostly shallow character to embody. He does what he can to make the wealthy Matthew a slightly sleazy but still charismatic type.

    Jillian Bell as Vivian Chase

Jillian Bell can always be relied upon to make smaller roles work (though these days she also tends to take bigger parts) and here, as Vivian she’s saddled with a fairly straightforward quirky outsider character, and she stays watchable despite the flaccid script.

Jillian Bell and Michael Hitchcock in 'Reunion'.
(L to R) Jillian Bell and Michael Hitchcock in ‘Reunion’. Photo: Republic Pictures.

    Michael Hitchcock as Theodore Buckley

Playing the bitter, drunken history teacher, Michael Hitchcock, like Bell, is a scene stealer when it comes to supporting roles. And honestly, the movie is lucky to have him.

    Nina Dobrev as Amanda Tanner

Jillian Bell, Michael Hitchcock, Nina Dobrev and Jamie Chung in 'Reunion'.
(L to R) Jillian Bell, Michael Hitchcock, Nina Dobrev and Jamie Chung in ‘Reunion’. Photo: Republic Pictures.

Nina Dobrev is perhaps more of a surprise since she comes from more of a dramatic background. But she has comedy experience, and here is solid as the sociopathic (literally, she self-admits that), ambitious political type who offers a different flavor from the rest of the cast.

    Final Thoughts

    Jillian Bell in 'Reunion'.
Jillian Bell in ‘Reunion’. Photo: Republic Pictures.

‘Reunion’ really doesn’t offer a whole lot that is fresh. Some of the jokes and character dynamics work, but for the most part, this is a minor entry in both the comedy and murder mystery canon.

You don’t need to be Poirot to figure out while this one died on its feet and got stuck in release limbo.

‘Reunion’ receives 5.5 out of 10 stars.

Moviefone: To begin with, can you talk about your first reaction to the screenplay and what did you think about the idea of being part of a mystery comedy?

Lil Rel Howery: I’m a big fan of murder mysteries, and to make it hysterical was a goal of mine. It’s like, okay, if we’re going to do this, this must be funny. So, to be a part of this, where it’s a true whodunit, and you’re not going to really figure this out till the end and making it funny. I think this is one of my favorite movies I’ve done so far in my career because of that.

MF: What are some of your favorite mystery comedies and did you draw influence from any of them for your performance?

LRH: Yeah, I mean, ‘Clue’ is so good. Even with ‘Knives Out’, I was always watching ‘Knives Out’ and sometimes thinking like, “Man, if this was hysterical though.” I think that about a lot of stuff. I think that with horror films. Anything that’s so dramatic, I tend to think like that. I try to see if you could do the opposite thing with it. This is so random but it’s one of the reasons why I love the show ‘Bel-Air’ so much, because its ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’ as a drama. I think if you remake sitcoms, you should make them dramas.

(L to R) Lil Rel Howery, Jillian Bell, Billy Magnussen, Nina Dobrev, Chace Crawford, Jamie Chung and Michael Hitchcock in ‘Reunion’. Photo: Republic Pictures.

MF: Can you talk about working with the ensemble cast of actors?

LRH: I mean, look, you got Nina (Dobrev), you got everyone. It’s just so many great people, and Michael (Hitchcock) is amazing. It was just everybody was funny. I think, that translated well because we all enjoyed each other off-screen too, and so it translated well on-screen. But honestly, it was a lot of laughs and a lot of fun. I liked how every character had its own arc, which is why I think this is going to be a tough movie to figure out who did what, because the writers, and Chris, and everybody, did a great job of making sure that everybody could look guilty. The performances were great.

MF: Can you talk about Ray and Evan’s friendship, how that is tested in the movie and working with Billy Magnussen?

LRH: First, Billy was a great collaborator to work with. I mean, we ended up becoming friends. That’s always cool too, when you’re scripted as friends and then you, really, become cool. A couple of the discussions me and Billy had earlier was about that. Who are these guys? How did they hang out in high school? What did they listen to? What did they bond with? When we were having those conversations, we were bonding with each other in general, you know what I mean? Without giving anything away, it’s interesting watching how their friendship transforms throughout trying to figure out who did what. It is one of those things you’re trying to see what your friend really thinks about you too. Ray really wanted to know from Evan, his true thoughts about him. Evan will say certain things and check him and let him know it is what it is. So, I’m trying to do this without saying anything. But their friendship is a very cool, unique one, that I think other people can relate to.

Michael Hitchcock, Jillian Bell, Nina Dobrev, Jamie Chung and Lil Rel Howery in 'Reunion'.
(L to R) Michael Hitchcock, Jillian Bell, Nina Dobrev, Jamie Chung and Lil Rel Howery in ‘Reunion’. Photo: Republic Pictures.

MF: Ray ends up acting like a detective and trying to solve the mystery himself. Can you talk about that and how excited he is to fill that role?

LRH: Well, I was trying to make sure Ray did that too, right? So, it was what would make him excited about doing this, and it would be because of the things he’s watched on television, right? The movies he’s seen and things like that. So, for me, it was channeling, what would get Ray excited about it? Which is why when you start seeing him looking for things in the beginning, he’s like, “Ooh, this is going to be like this.” He’s excited about the possibility of also doing something different than what his real life is. You know what I mean? So, it’s Ray trying to create another identity for himself, and he finds it in this moment of trying to figure out why one of their classmates is murdered.

MF: Finally, Ray wears his favorite outfit from high school to his reunion. If you had to choose your favorite outfit from your whole life to wear to an event, what would that be?

LRH: Wow. Well, for the last Oscars I went to, I hosted the pre-show. So, for me, I decided to dress like I was going to a 1970s Oscars. I had on bell-bottoms, and I bought the big bow tie. Literally we went and looked at what Richard Pryor wore, and other random people wore to the Oscars. That’s what I did. I literally created a suit based off going to the Oscars in the ‘70s.

Candy Cane Lane’ is a comedy adventure for the family, filled with holiday cheers, hilarious hijinks, and the importance of communicating and working together as a family. What starts off as a friendly neighborhood Christmas decorating contest quickly turns into chaos as Chris Carver crosses paths with a mischievous elf with a naughty agenda.

The movie stars Eddie Murphy and Tracee Ellis Ross, and is directed by Reginald Hudlin (‘Boomerang’), ‘Candy Can Lane’ premieres on Prime Video and in select theaters in Los Angeles and New York on December 1, 2023.
Moviefone recently had the pleasure of attending the virtual global press conference for ‘Candy Cane Lane.’ In attendance were director Reginald Hudlin, Eddie Murphy, Tracee Ellis Ross, Jillian Bell, Chris Redd, Robin Thede, D.C. Young Fly, Thaddeus J. Mixson, Genneya WaltonMadison Thomas, and screenwriter Kelly Younger.
Here are 9 things we learned from the ‘Candy Cane Lane’ virtual press conference:

    1. ‘Candy Cane Lane’ is Eddie Murphy’s first Christmas movie, technically

Eddie Murphy as Chris Carver in 'Candy Cane Lane.'

Yes, this movie is technically Eddie Murphy’s first Christmas movie. While the actor’s expansive filmography includes titles such as ‘Coming To America’ and ‘Trading Places,’ in which both movies take place during the holiday season, ‘Candy Cane Lane’ fully embraces everything surrounding the holiday and its themes.
When asked what it is about this Christmas movie that he loves so much, Murphy said:
Eddie Murphy: I thought that script was unique, and I thought that it had all the elements that you’re supposed to have in a Christmas movie where you could watch it over and over again. I know the movies that I watched, the Christmas movies, we watched them every year all the time, and I thought this could be one of those kinds of movies that families could revisit.

The pair first worked together on the 1992 rom-com ‘Boomerang.’ Hudlin had been interested in making a Christmas movie and learned during a meeting with Amazon that Murphy was also interested. Everything aligned for the actor and director to reunion 30 years after their first collaboration.
Reginald Hudlin: Yeah, we had been talking, we would connect and we would throw ideas back and forth. And then, I was meeting with Amazon and I was like, “I really want to do a Christmas movie.” “We have a Christmas movie and Eddie Murphy wants to do it.” I’m like, “Let’s start Monday.” It’s not complicated.

Eddie Murphy: But actually, he put together this great presentation, the best I’d ever seen anybody put together, and how he would do the movie and stuff. It was like, “Hey, this is a no-brainer. He just saw the whole thing from the beginning.”

    3. Tracee Ellis Ross on ‘Candy Cane Lane’ capturing all the elements of a Christmas movie

Playing opposite Eddie Murphy’s Chris Carver is Tracee Ellis Ross as Carol Carver. During the press conference, Ross talks about what defines an iconic Christmas movie for her.
Tracee Ellis Ross: I think love, family, and a message that’s at the center of it, which we have in this movie, that the family comes together to conquer a bad elf, a rogue elf, so to speak. I think the thing that’s special about this movie is it’s an adventure comedy Christmas movie. It’s funny, there’s adventure. As I said, there’s hijinks, action, children, lots of lights and decorations, special effects, Eddie Murphy. These are a lot of the elements, but it’s a good story that has all these elements on it, and we hope that it becomes a holiday classic.

    4. The younger cast was horrified on their first day on set, for the best reasons possible

Rounding out the Carver family are Thaddeus J. Mixson as Nick Carver, Genneya Walton as Joy Carver, and Madison Thomas as Holly Carver. ‘Candy Cane Lane’ isn’t their first acting job, but it is their first time working with a legend such as Eddie Murphy.
Genneya Walton: First of all, I was horrified for the best reasons possible. I was like, “Girl, you better have your stuff together.’ I think my first day was on the track scene.
Speaking to Eddie Murphy and Tracee Ellis Ross, she says:
“I look up to you guys so much, and I’m inspired by all of your work, so getting to work with you guys is wonderful, and I learned so much truly, just from watching you guys do what you do, so it was freaking sick.”
Co-stars Mixson and Thomas express the same sentiment.
Thaddeus J. Mixon: I’ll tell you right now, boy, I was nervous. I was nervous. I ain’t know what, I was just like, man, I was just watching y’all on TV. Now, I’m about to actually share the screen with y’all. It is truly an honor for real. I’m blessed to even have the opportunity to even work with y’all. And also, work with Reggie as well. I worked with him on my first ever movie, so it’s always fun when I work with him, so it’s a blessing.

When Eddie Murphy’s character Chris comes across a mysterious Christmas decor store, he is enthralled by the elaborate and magical items. However, the store was run by Pepper- a mischievous elf who liked to play tricks on unsuspecting customers.
Bell elaborates on what drew her to the character.
Jillian Bell: The first time I read the script, I just kept talking like her out loud, which is a good sign. It’s a bad sign if you’re not an actor. As an actor, it was a good sign to me because I just kept doing her voice. And I was like, “Oh, there’s something here.” And I just fell in love with the world of it. I was so excited for the opportunity to get to work with everybody that was involved and I just think Reggie is one of the kindest, most wonderful directors, and — you guys can attest this too, like, if you have a creative idea and you’re nervous about it. There’s no nerves attached, approaching Reggie with it. So I think I think after our first meeting, I was like, oh, no, I really want to do this film.
Tracee Ellis Ross and Robin Thede chimes in about Bell’s performance in the film:
Robin Thede: The brilliant thing about Jillian Bell is that she does bring that humanity to these characters and exactly what Kelly [Younger] had envisioned, which is that she’s not just a one-note evil person. She truly believes in what she’s doing and like, you get it like. I don’t think that I thought I was rooting against Pepper. I was just like, “Oh, well, obviously you can’t win, but like you’re kind of like misguided. She’s also really fun, and evil and violent, and all of that. But there’s just some really epic acting moments, too.

Tracee Ellis Ross: Jillian Bell is… Yes. Seriously, that moment when she appears in this, you’re just like, “What is happening? And why does that twinkle in her eye actually look like evil in her eye?”
And as Pepper says in the movie, “What’s Christmas without a little terror?”

    6. The cast on working with Nick Offerman

Nick Offerman (‘The Last of Us’) plays Pip, a man who’s been turned into a porcelain miniature figure by Pepper. He stars alongside Robin Thede’s Cordelia and Chris Redd’s Lamplighter Gary, who have also fallen to the same fate.
Offerman was not present at the press conference, but his co-stars praised his performance.
Robin Thede: Nick Offerman talks, everything stops.
According to Hudlin, it was Offerman’s idea to keep his character British.
Reginald Hudlin: First of all, Nick was just like, “You know, there’s always British actors and play American parts. I’m gonna play a British part.” I was like, “Oh, that’s great.” Because again, I just wanted the three village people, as we call you guys as different as possible, right? And it’s just like, I’m like, “Okay, I don’t know, my son’s gonna take this because like, he’s so ‘Parks and Rec.’ He’s so locked in.” I’m like, “But, you know, Nick Offerman’s a genius. We’re gonna let him do this.” And he just found a new hilarious character and the way he played off the two of you was exquisite.

Jillian Bell: His first line was very reminiscent of ‘Planes, Trains and Automobiles.’ And my heart broke for him. And I’m like, he literally has been on screen for 10 seconds. I’m in I’m invested. I mean, I was invested in the tiny version of it, but I’m saying just his face too, like, he is an incredible actor, and he should be in so many.

    7. The script is inspired by a personal story, minus the evil elf

(L to R) Eddie Murphy and Kelly Younger attend Amazon Studios ‘Candy Cane Lane’ World Premiere in Los Angeles on Nov 28, 2023.
Writer Kelly Younger based the story on his personal experience as well as the location.
Kelly Younger: It is a personal true story. My parents live on the street that leads into Candy Cane Lane and El Segundo. They’ve lived there for many years. My dad over-decorates every year, goes over the top, much to my mother’s dismay.
    He continues:
Kelly Younger: I wanted to bring in magic and mischief and to have lot of fun, but it was really important to me that it was grounded in a real family. And I think especially what Eddie and Tracee did, how they captured what felt like a very real relationship. And this family felt very, really real. To have these folks bring it to life is just wonderful.

    8. The process of blending live-action and CGI together

Jillian Bell as ‘Pepper,’ Eddie Murphy as ‘Chris Carver,’ and Madison Thomas as ‘Holly Carver’ star in 'Candy Cane Lane.'

Inside Pepper’s shop, Chris Carver comes across a miniature Christmas town, along with miniature figures – Pip, Cordelia, and Lamplighter Gary, who come to life. The cast talks about the process of making those scenes come together.
It took the special effects team from ILM and teamwork from the cast and crew to blend the human actors and the porcelain figures together in the final product. Hudlin talks about working with ILM:
Reginald Hudlin: They had face references but not body references, and [the actors] came up with all this fantastic physical comedy on top of the great verbal comedy, and that was amazing. It was a great collaboration working with them on that.

(L to R) Eddie Murphy as Chris Carver and Tracee Ellis Ross as Carol Carver star in ‘Candy Cane Lane.’ Photo: Claudette Barius. © AMAZON CONTENT SERVICES LLC.
Eddie Murphy: Yeah, when you see the special effects shots and stuff like that, those things are really time-consuming and it’s awkward, and it’s just a lot of work doing a sequence like that. It’s really putting a jigsaw puzzle together when you’re doing those sequences, so it was just long and frustrating.
Eddie Murphy and Tracee Ellis Ross attend Amazon Studios 'Candy Cane Lane' World Premiere in Los Angeles on Nov 28, 2023.
(L to R) Eddie Murphy and Tracee Ellis Ross attend Amazon Studios ‘Candy Cane Lane’ World Premiere in Los Angeles on Nov 28, 2023.
Tracee Ellis Ross: Yeah, because you’re acting with an imaginary thing, and it requires a different kind of acting.
Although Offerman, Thede, and Redd are playing CGI characters, Murphy wanted everyone on set together for every scene to make it more authentic.
Reginald Hudlin: The very fact that I didn’t intend for us to have to invent some technology, but we did. We had this reindeer system so that the actors, the villagers, and the live-action actors could act in the same scene at the same time and improvise.

Chris Redd: We were in these little booths. And like, so the animators could create, like, animate while we talked, and that was some different ways to see each other, so we were just riffing the whole time.

Chris Redd attends Amazon Studios ‘Candy Cane Lane’ World Premiere in Los Angeles on Nov 28, 2023.
Robin Thede: The cool thing about the process, which was so fun, is that Eddie was really like, “No, I want them on stage with us rehearsing in person”, right in our full size, although I’ve not much taller than my ornament. But that was really fun. So I was saying earlier, like, we were really involved in most of the scenes in the movie, even if you don’t see us on screen, because it was really important to Eddie and Tracy and the kids and everybody that we were there and bouncing off of them just in case we were going to jump in. So all those conversations where we’re at the house or they were at their house or whatever, we were there for months because it was important to really get that vibe, and I think you feel it because they were looking at just lights or like little monopoly pieces. So we would rehearse in person, and then we would be banished to our little sound booths, but we could see them on a monitor, and they could hear us in their IEMs. And then they would shoot our faces with like a GoPro.

    9. The cast on working with Eddie Murphy

(L to R) Eddie Murphy and Tracee Ellis Ross attend Amazon Studios ‘Candy Cane Lane’ World Premiere in Los Angeles on Nov 28, 2023.
Eddie Murphy has been in the industry for over 40 years. His extensive list of credits vary from comedy to action to drama and has been in many classic such as ‘Beverly Hills Cop,’ ‘Coming To America,’ ‘The Nutty Professor,’ ‘Shrek,’ ‘Mulan,’ ‘Dreamgirls,’ ‘Dolemite Is My Name,’ and more.
The cast talks about being fans of his work and about their experience working with him on ‘Candy Cane Lane.’
Tracee Ellis Ross: The thing about Eddie is he’s hilarious. But, what makes everyone hilarious around him is he’s a really generous actor. For Eddie, it’s about the groundedness, which is the reason that I have loved his comedy for so long. It’s not based in being funny. It’s based in being real. And so, there’s a connection that has to be there for it to come across in the right way, and that’s what he does. He’s not sitting there trying to get you to set up his funny and his jokes. He’s actually in a scene playing with you. That’s what makes it fun, and that’s what makes it work. I think, I mean, I don’t know about you guys, but that’s what I experienced, and what a treat and an honor at this point in my career to be able to work with somebody that you’ve admired, whose work you’ve known and grown up with to a certain extent.

Tracee Ellis Ross attends Amazon Studios ‘Candy Cane Lane’ World Premiere in Los Angeles on Nov 28, 2023.
Reginald Hudlin: This is the thing. The thing is, I’ve always said that Eddie deserved an Oscar for his performance in ‘The Nutty Professor.’ Because it’s like there’s no acting school that says this is how to act against a tennis ball, but he did that. He played two different women that were completely different women, but because people go, “Oh, it’s just laughs. It’s not funny. That’s not hard.” It’s incredibly hard. He was a pioneer in that style of performance, which he doesn’t get credit for.

    D. C. Young Fly: If you sit back and watch all the different elements and understand like, just Christmas, and specials, and understanding that Eddie is an icon. It’s just being around that it brings that out of us, you know what I’m saying? I feel like everybody was just trying to be on their A-game because this is an Eddie Murphy movie. Why wouldn’t we come here and not be on our A-game?
Chris Redd: I swear to God, the first day, I think I wrote fifteen jokes on the way to set, just like “I might use them.”

  • Movie Review: ‘Candy Cane Lane’

'Candy Cane Lane' starring Eddie Murphy premieres on Prime Video on December 1st.
‘Candy Cane Lane’ starring Eddie Murphy premieres on Prime Video on December 1st.

Premiering on Prime Video December 1st, ‘Candy Cane Lane’ sees Eddie Murphy leading a Christmas story with a magical twist. This fitfully funny comedy represents the company’s attempt to keep tapping the festive family movie market, something that competitors such as Netflix and Disney+ are also targeting.

Yet there’s a certain something missing here, and it isn’t Christmas spirit. It’s Eddie Murphy’s subversive brand of comedy.

Does ‘Candy Cane Lane’ deliver the goods?

Jillian Bell as ‘Pepper,’ Eddie Murphy as ‘Chris Carver,’ and Madison Thomas as ‘Holly Carver’ star in 'Candy Cane Lane.'
(L to R) Jillian Bell as ‘Pepper,’ Eddie Murphy as ‘Chris Carver,’ and Madison Thomas as ‘Holly Carver’ star in ‘Candy Cane Lane.’ Photo: Claudette Barius. © AMAZON CONTENT SERVICES LLC.

There is, as mentioned, a lot of competition in Christmas movies these days for those who don’t want the saccharine romantic antics of Hallmark and Lifetime’s concoctions or dig through apps to find classics to watch.

Amazon Studios, which has a deal with Eddie Murphy to make at least three movies (long-awaited comedy sequel ‘Coming 2 America’ was the first), has well and truly hopped on that holly-festooned bandwagon with this new offering.

But while it’s looking to channel the likes of ‘Deck the Halls’, it never quite hits the right gear. Though certainly better than some of the turgid family-friendly output Murphy has been part of in the past, it’s still lacking some of that essential magic. And that’s because the leading man tones down his wackier side to mostly play a stalwart family man who gets wrapped up in comedic Christmas oddness.

‘Candy Cane Lane’: script and direction

Written by Kelly Younger, a veteran of Disney and Pixar animated movies and live-action Muppet outings, ‘Candy Cane Lane’ takes some fairly obvious routes to its predictable conclusion. There are some well-used themes such as learning that family is more important than shiny gifts or winning competitions.

Murphy’s character is written as a fairly straight-ahead guy, dealing with kids of different ages and facing a big new problem in that he’s been let go from his job.

Younger has a good time writing for Pepper, who is mischievous and odd when the moment calls for it, and the magical creatures who appear from the 12 Days of Christmas tree that forms the major McGuffin here do offer some entertainment value (the concept of six geese carpet bombing unsuspecting pedestrians with eggs from the sky is a good one, and plays well into the finale, for example.)

And there are, at least some fun diversions, including a group of characters who have previously fallen foul of Pepper.

It’s just whenever the story cuts back to family time, the feeling is of Christmas joy leeching from the movie, no matter how much the script or actors try to enliven them.

Director Reginald Hudlin, meanwhile –– working with Murphy for the first time since 1992’s ‘Boomerang’ –– largely leans on his cast effects team to do the work, finding and few solid shots here and there.

As mentioned, this is Eddie Murphy on all-audiences autopilot, bringing another staid parental man to life who sees his carefully curated world start to unravel. There are lessons to be learned, and chaotic elves to deal with, but Murphy largely treats it all like another day at the office.

Of course, he’s fun, but it’s not the sort of passion he displayed in the past, coming across more as a “one for them” performance. You might try to point to a legendary comedy creator slowing down as he ages, but he put more drive into the likes of recent movies such as ‘Dolemite Is My Name’ and ‘Coming 2 America’ than he does here.

If there is a comedy MVP of the movie, it’s Jillian Bell, who has the role of miscreant magic user Pepper, who after being banished from the North Pole, is convinced she has to punish mankind’s wicked ways, and does it through dodgy deals. Bell, who has been good in the likes of ‘Godmothered’, ‘Rough Night’ and ‘Brittany Runs a Marathon’ and runs with the character, breathing real life into Pepper.

Alongside her are the poor, unfortunate souls who have agreed to her deals in the past and are reduced to being living figurines in the village display in her Christmas shop, who all make small supporting roles work. That includes the likes of Nick Offerman, a proven comedy talent who is inexplicably lumbered with (or perhaps he chose to try) a cod-British accent. Still, he generates some good laughs.

Around Murphy is his family unit, played by Tracee Ellis Ross, Genneya Walton, Thaddeus J. Mixson and Madison Thomas, who are all perfectly fine in their roles but (aside from Thomas) are mostly there to be stock characters in a movie like this. Ross in particular did so much with a driven career woman in ‘Black-ish’ on TV but is saddled with a much less impressive part here.

    ‘Candy Cane Lane’: Final Thoughts

While its delights are of the strictly standard variety, ‘Candy Cane Lane’ ends up a suitably enjoyable Christmas movie if you’re not particularly demanding.

Boosted by Bell and her comedy support in particular, it’s watchable enough, and is seemingly made for the family to watch on the sofa with mugs of hot cocoa in hand.

‘Candy Cane Lane’ receives 7out of 10 stars.

Premiering on Prime Video beginning December 1st is the new Christmas movie ‘Candy Cane Lane,’ which stars Eddie Murphy (‘Trading Places,’ ‘Beverly Hills Cop’) and was directed by Reginald Hudlin (‘Boomerang’).

'Candy Cane Lane' director Reginald Hudlin.
‘Candy Cane Lane’ director Reginald Hudlin.

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with director Reginald Hudlin about his work on ‘Candy Cane Lane,’ his first reaction to the screenplay, reuniting with Eddie Murphy and if his process has changed at all since ‘Boomerang,’ the challenges of mixing live-action with VFX and animation, making a Christmas movie and if he is ready for the film to become a holiday must-watch.

You can read the full interview below or click on the video player above to watch our interviews with Hudlin, screenwriter Kelly Younger, and Production Designer Aaron Osborne.

Moviefone: To begin with, what was your first reaction to Kelly Younger’s screenplay, and can you also talk about the challenges of making a Christmas movie?

Reginald Hudlin: When I first read Kelly Younger’s script, I loved it. My only real note was, as crazy as this is, we don’t go far enough. So, I said, “Let’s make it even crazier.” We had a great time. Whenever you make a Christmas movie, there’s certain expectations, right? So, you’ve got to have great Christmas music, you’ve got to have an emotional impact on people, and you’ve got to have amazing decorations. So, I doubled down, if not tripled down on all that stuff. Then we added elements that you would never normally see in a Christmas movie to make people go, “Whoa, I’ve never seen anything like this before.” So, have your cake and eat it too.

MF: What was it like reuniting with Eddie Murphy, what does he bring to a role like this, and has his process as an actor changed at all since you worked with him on ‘Boomerang’?

RH: Eddie was perfect for this because he’s a family man. He’s like the rest of us. He’s decorating the house and making sure that all the family have great presence. So, we were both very much in the same mindset of we love Christmas, we love Christmas movies, and here’s our contribution. So, we’re doing it from a point of view of, we relate to this character 100%, which is key to me when you make a movie like this. Eddie just keeps getting better, honestly. When you’re sitting in the editing room and you’re watching his performance, both comedically and dramatically, you just go, “Boy, he’s great at his job.” Eddie Murphy is an amazing actor. When people do comedy, they go, “Oh, that’s easy.” It would be the opposite of easy. It’s harder.

MF: Can you talk about your use of VFX in the movie and mixing live-action with computer animation?

RH: It was so much fun. I’ve been dying to work with ILM, Industrial Light & Magic, all those amazing folks. Man, they had so much fun. We were just feeding off each other like, “What about this? What about that?” We had these great vocal performances from these world-class actors, Nick Offerman, Robin Thede, Chris Redd, and then they took that stuff and then added the physical comedy on top of it. So, we were just like, “Oh my God.” We’re all having the best time.

MF: Finally, how do you feel about the idea of ‘Candy Cane Lane’ becoming a holiday tradition and a movie that audiences watch year after year?

RH: When we made the movie, we were like, “Look, let’s pack it with so many jokes, so many visual things going on that you’ve got to see it more than once just to catch all the stuff.” So, it’s all there for you. We start December 1st, but you can watch it all 25 days.

  • Actress Jillian Bell Talks ‘I’m Totally Fine’

    KpENNkGw

Opening in theaters, on demand, and digital beginning November 4th is the new comedy ‘I’m Totally Fine,’ which was directed by Brandon Dermer (‘Flatbush Misdemeanors’).

The movie stars Jillian Bell as Venessa, who goes on a solo vacation after her best friend Jennifer (Natalie Morales) suddenly dies. However, Vanessa is shocked when she finds Jennifer alive and claiming to be an extraterrestrial.

In addition to Bell and Morales, the film also features Blake Anderson (‘Dope’), Kyle Newacheck (‘Murder Mystery’) and Harvey Guillen (‘What We Do in the Shadows’).

Actress Jillian Bell began her career with roles on popular TV shows like ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm,’ ‘Workaholics,’ and ‘Eastbound & Down,’ but has gone on to appear in such successful movies as ‘Bridesmaids,’ The Master,’ ’22 Jump Street,’ ‘Inherent Vice,’ ‘Bill & Ted Face the Music,’ and ‘Godmothered.’

However, she is probably best remembered for her acclaimed performance in the comedy ‘Brittany Runs a Marathon.’

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with actress Jillian Bell about her work on ‘I’m Totally Fine,’ how she got involved in the project, helping to cast Natalie Morales, switching roles, the idea of having an extra day with a deceased loved one, phone acting, working with director Brandon Dermer, and her love for the rock band Papa Roach.

You can read our full interview with Jillian Bell below or click on the video player above to watch our interviews with Bell and Harvey Guillen.

Moviefone: To begin with, how did you get involved with this project and what was your first reaction to the screenplay?

Jillian Bell: I loved the script. First, I heard about the idea from Kyle Newacheck, who’s my buddy from ‘Workaholics,’ and even before that we were friends. He called me up and was like, “I’m trying to do this movie with Brandon Dermer who’s the director. It’s about the fact that none of us are in control in this moment,” especially because the pandemic had just happened, and we were still in lockdown.

So, I said, “Yeah, what’s your approach?” He told me the premise of the movie, which is so hard to say in one sentence. But it’s amazing, fun, unique and different. I just said, “I would love to be in it, and let me call Natalie Morales. I feel like she would be a perfect buddy for this film.” She was flawless, so I was so happy she would do it.

MF: So, you actually cast Natalie Morales in this film yourself, is that correct?

JB: Well, I had the idea of her and they were like, “Do you know her? Can you reach out to her?” I’m like, “Yeah, I’ll just call her right now.” So, I did, and she was painting her bathroom and I said, “Hold off on that for a minute. Just let me pitch you an idea.”

I said, “Look, we are shooting this in 10 days. That’s it. It will fly by, it will be emotional, crazy, messy and hopefully beautiful, and we’ll get paid nothing. Do you want to do it?” She’s was like, “Yes.” So, she was just as wild as me.

MF: Vanessa is dealing with a lot of grief during the film, can you talk about your approach to playing the character and her range of emotions?

JB: Well, I unfortunately lost my dad 10 years ago. I was actually supposed to play the alien and Natalie was supposed to play my part, but when we were reading it, we both connected to the other one. So, we were like, “Can we pitch you an idea? Can we maybe play opposite roles?” Everybody was excited about it, thank goodness.

It just resonated with me on a deep level because I know what that grief feels like. I know what it looks like. I’ve experienced it firsthand, and I just felt like I’d never been able to do something like that in a movie before. So, it was a big challenge but also a very vulnerable side that I felt lucky enough to get to kind of explore and it was super therapeutic.

MF: Has that ever happened to you before, where you switched roles with another actor right before you began filming?

JB: No, not usually. I mean, I was lucky enough to get an offer for a film, ‘Office Christmas Party.’ They wanted me to play an assistant, and I had just been doing ‘Workaholics’ playing an assistant, so I was like, “Is anyone playing the 60-year-old Russian male pimp?” They were like, “No.” I said, “Can I play that role?” They’re like, “Yeah.” So, that’s happened before luckily enough in my career, but never swapping the roles really, I don’t think.

MF: The movie examines both the positive and negative effects of having the opportunity spend one more day with a deceased loved one. Can you talk about that and how Vanessa comes to terms with having to say goodbye to Jennifer for a second time?

JB: I mean the highlight is you get to spend two more days with a loved one. Who wouldn’t want to do that? I think that was part of the reason I was into the premise because if someone said, “It won’t be the exact same, but this person has your father’s memories and looks like your father. Would you want to spend time with them?” I would be like, “Yes, in a heartbeat.” I guess that’s the positive.

The negative is sometimes some things are better left unsaid. I think that my character finds out things about her friend that were kept secret for a reason to protect the friendship. That’s a part of a friendship. There will always be little moments where you choose to keep secrets to be kind or to protect the friendship.

I think that when you have, in this movie, it feels so weird to say but, an alien who’s taking that form and is very blunt because she doesn’t know how feelings and emotions work. Obviously, she finds out more than maybe my character would hope for it. The thing is realizing that not only am I saying goodbye again to my friend but to this new person or this new being that I grew to love.

MF: Can you talk about working with Natalie Morales and watching her create this unique alien character?

JB: Oh, it was fascinating. I really feel like it’s such a fun choice she’s making and also the arc of it is so beautiful because if you watch the movie, she starts to become more human. It’s less alien and more human. I think that’s such a cool choice. It’s not just one thing throughout the whole movie. That’s why someone like Natalie, I was like, I would love to see her take on this.

MF: What was it like reuniting with your ‘Workaholic’ co-stars Blake and Kyle on this movie?

JB: It was great. I mean, Blake had been cast and I was so excited for him to play that role, even though we didn’t get to do one thing together. All our scenes are on a phone and I wasn’t there when he shot it and he wasn’t there for my stuff. So, we barely got to be together.

But Kyle wasn’t supposed to be originally in it, we had a COVID scare on set and didn’t want to bring any more people on. So, we were just like, who within this group? Obviously, Kyle would be fantastic to play this weird stranger that we meet on the road. So, it worked out for the best.

MF: Marlon Brando once said that acting on the phone is the hardest type of film acting. Did you find that to be true when shooting your phone scenes with Blake?

JB: Yeah, I actually agree with that. There is something that feels very disconnected about answering a phone and then having a big emotion. It feels so false because there’s a dial tone or nothing on the other end. At least if you have someone in the other room calling and actually doing the scene with you, that could be very helpful. But it’s rarely the case.

We had a scene in this movie where one of Natalie’s friends called in and did the voice for her sister during the Papa Roach scene. That was a very emotional scene. So, it was really important to have someone on the other end of that phone. But if you don’t, you can feel absolutely ridiculous.

MF: What was it like being directed by Brandon Dermer and watching him execute his vision for this project?

JB: It was beautiful. He is one of the loveliest humans I’ve met in my life. He could not be more supportive, making sure that everyone’s getting what they need in the scene, he was emotionally present and answered any questions. I’ve never seen him flustered. He’s always just got such a good attitude and really knows what he wants, and then leaves room for the creative to just flow.

He’s also just behind the scenes very supportive of making sure he’s connecting people with each other and making sure more opportunities come from everything, which I think is a really rare quality, especially in this industry. I don’t think everyone thinks of that all the time in their off time.

MF: Finally, the band Papa Roach plays a big role in the movie. Are you a fan?

JB: Well, I will say I do love Papa Roach. I actually have a bathing suit that says, “Cut my life into pieces. This is my bathing suit.” So, I love the band. I was such a geek when we got to meet them.

Michelle Pfeiffer and Lucas Hedges in ‘French Exit’

Michelle Pfeiffer’s glamorously forlorn Frances thought that her life would run out before the money did. Alas, she was incorrect, and as she finds herself on the brink of financial ruin, she liquidates her assets, grabs her adult son (Lucas Hedges) and her cat (Tracy Letts), and leaves New York for a small apartment in Paris. She is the kind of woman who sharpens knives in the dark and lights cigarettes in a steady stream that (unfortunately) looks every bit as cool as tobacco companies promised in their early days. The move didn’t brighten Frances’ dreary skies, and she must figure out how to get her figurative groove back, and the journey proves fabulous.
Watch this if… Seeing Michelle Pfeiffer’s version of “down and out” makes you feel warm and fuzzy, and if you are especially interested in noteworthy cat roles.

While O’Neal was actively working against them and rising in their ranks, the film captures the power of the revolution, and how timely their message still is today.

  • Scarlett Johansson’s Bachelorette Party Gets Out of Control in ‘Rough Night’ Trailer

Rough NightWhat happens in Miami, stays in Miami? Scarlett Johansson certainly hopes so, in the new red-band trailer for “Rough Night.”

The movie has shades of “The Hangover,” as Johansson’s bride-to-be and four besties hit Miami for a bachelorette party. As one friend excitedly screams, “There’s going to be so many hot Miami babes, we’re going to be swimming in d—, girl!”

They hit the clubs, down shots, snort cocaine, and hire a stripper. But things go terribly awry when the stripper ends up dead, and the bachelorette party soon turns into an episode of “How to Get Away With (Accidental) Murder.”The script is from two “Broad City” writers, and the movie features series star Ilana Glazer as one of the BFFs (Kate McKinnon, Jillian Bell, and Zoe Kravitz play the others), which is recommendation enough for us!

“Rough Night” (previously titled “Rock That Body”) opens in theaters June 16.
