    • Universal made its big presentation to the 2026 CinemaCon crowd.
    • Among the movies promoted were ‘Disclosure Day’ and ‘The Odyssey’.
    • There was also a look at ‘Minions & Monsters’ and ‘Other Mommy’.

Universal had a more muted and mixed 2025 than some other studios –– the latest ‘Jurassic World’ outing was a hit, but other titles, including thriller sequel ‘M3GAN 2.0’ stumbled.

Can it regain its mojo? ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’s success as certainly helped, and it does at least have some heavy hitters on deck, including Steven Spielberg with sci-fi pic ‘Disclosure Day’ and Christopher Nolan’s much-anticipated epic ‘The Odyssey’.

Beyond those two biggies, we can expect the usual blend of family fare (including ‘Minions & Monsters’, the latest extension of the ‘Despicable Me’ franchise) and comedies such as ‘Focker In-Law’.

Before the full presentation kicked off, Snoop Dogg took the stage to confirm that the biopic based on his career will start filming this summer, directed by Craig Brewer and starring Jonathan Daviss.

    Here’s what was revealed…

    The Odyssey

Christopher Nolan’s epic, based on Homer’s story, was somewhat naturally the first big movie featured. Starring half of Hollywood, it promises to be massive in scale and ambitious in scope.

The filmmaker himself took the stage to talk up his latest, joking that he’s glad he doesn’t have to follow Steven Spielberg. ‘The Odyssey’ is not, he says a story. It’s THE story, one he knew he had to shoot entirely in IMAX.

He praised his ensemble, especially Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway and Tom Holland, who he called the heart of the film. Oh, and it was a “nightmare to make in the best way possible,” but he’s nearly finished.

More than five minutes of new footage from the movie was shown, including a shipwrecked Odysseus (Damon) washing up on a shore, where he’s greeted by the goddess Calypso, played by Charlize Theron, asking her about his past life which he cannot remember, and a battle from the Trojan war and the iconic Trojan Horse.

Illumination has been a consistent performer for Universal, its animated output boosting studio coffers. So of course the team were present to pimp the next ‘Minions’ movie featuring the little yellow troublemakers.

It’s set in the 1920s and features the Minions trying to find a new master to serve. Pierre Coffin, who co-writes, directs and voices the creatures, told the crowd that he put everything into the new one, before introducing some fresh footage.

Getting more of a spotlight was the new ‘Meet the Parents’ outing, which sees Ariana Grande as a young woman looking to marry into Ben Stiller‘s family (and Stiller’s Greg Focker is suspicious of her).

Stiller and Robert De Niro took the stage to introduce a first look, with De Niro commenting that Grande is the funniest scene partner he’s ever had. Ouch!

‘Disclosure Day’s Colman Domingo arrived on stage to introduce his director, Steven Spielberg, who is getting a special award from CinemaCon (along with a sizzle reel of past work and a standing ovation from the audience).

His latest, an alien-inflected sci-fi thriller starring Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor and Domingo.

The iconic filmmaker took the chance to argue for longer release windows, which naturally plays well with this crowd.

He also sat down with Domingo to discuss his own movie-watching history, his father’s belief in life beyond our world, his own thoughts on aliens and his time making this latest effort.

New footage was shown (though Spielberg said he was keeping every frame of the third act withheld until the movie itself is released), with plenty of tense action.

“It is an experience, this movie,” Spielberg promised. “All you need to get from the beginning to the end is a seat belt.”

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Jessica Chastain, Isaac Hernández and director Michel Franco about their work on ‘Dreams’, why Franco wanted to make the movie, the actors’ first reaction to the screenplay, their characters’ relationship, working together, and why Franco cast Hernández.

Moviefone: To begin with, Michel, can you talk about developing the screenplay and as a filmmaker, what did you want to say with this movie?

Michel Franco: I had this idea for many years and when Jessica and I were shooting our previous movie called ‘Memory’, even though we hadn’t finished shooting, I knew I wanted to work with her again and I was thinking of all the ideas. I was thinking of what sounded, timely and interesting. That was about four years ago. So, I pitched this to Jessica on a lunch break. She immediately said, “Yes. It sounds so different to what we’re doing now.” Then I went away to write the script and I was interested in two things. The intimate story between the Isaac’s character and Jessica’s character. He’s a Mexican that crosses the border illegally to pursue his dancing dreams and to be with her because they love each other. But then I wanted to show that her character is challenged by reality when he shows up unannounced in the States, because she had a double life. One in Mexico, and one in San Francisco. So that’s what I was into exploring and then I think there’s a lot for the audience to also find in the film regarding their relationship between the two countries.

MF: Jessica, can you talk about your first reaction to Michel’s screenplay and why you wanted to go on this cinematic journey with him?

Jessica Chastain: I loved it. When he sent it to me, my response was, “It’s perfect.” I loved it. It was so different from ‘Memory’. Jennifer was such a thorny, complex character that I haven’t really gotten to explore before. I loved this idea that she’s a philanthropist, but also is a perpetrator of violence at the same time, and that those things aren’t mutually exclusive. It was saying a lot of things about where we were. I just saw a way in, and I wanted to stretch myself and I knew I could do a good job. I mean, I hoped I could do it good job.

Isaac Hernández stars in 'Dreams'. Photo: Greenwich Entertainment.

MF: Isaac, can you talk about your first reaction to the screenplay, and did you understand and relate to the character immediately?

Isaac Hernández: Well, the first approach was at an after party in Mexico City. I organized a festival there. My sister is friends with Michel. She invited him to watch the show. Michel thought that me addressing the audience before the show was kind of the moment where he decided that I could do this role, and then we met at the after party. He gave me the outline of the character. He didn’t promise anything. He said, “I have this story. It would be great, if you’re interested, if I could send you the script in a few months.” Six months or so passed and I get this amazing script and my first thought was, what an incredible story. I don’t know if I can do this. Immediately I started thinking about what it would be like to portray a character so complex. I obviously thought of my mom. For some reason, I thought, what is my mom going to say when she sees me do some of these things as a character? Then I was still attracted by the possibility of being able to tell such an important story and bring dance into a movie. I found out that I would be able to work with someone like Jessica and that just made everything so exciting. I had to be a part of it in a sense. I couldn’t deny myself the opportunity to try a role like this, to challenge myself artistically with a story so complex, and to have the privilege in this life to be able to be on a set with such masters of their crafts and be able to be supported and invited. It felt like a privilege.

Isaac Hernández stars in 'Dreams'. Photo: Greenwich Entertainment.

MF: Michel, can you talk about discovering Isaac and why he was the right actor for this role?

MF: I knew I needed someone special. If that makes sense? Not just an actor, but someone that would bring more to the film. I don’t know how to explain, but Isaac has a whole world of his own because of the ballet, but also because of his personality and the fact that he’s not an actor. He’s not an actor, he’s more of a dancer, and I thought this would bring something very fresh to the film. Of course, it was a bit of a gamble. I remembered first Jessica saying, “Why do you think he can do it if he pretty much hasn’t acted before?” I just knew that this would make a very special film and I think I was right. The ballet makes the movie very special. Every immigrant is doing so much for the States, but the dreams that this character is pursuing somehow elevates the beauty of the film. So that was why I decided to work with him. He’s like a national treasurer to us. We’re all very proud of Isaac Hernández.

MF: Jessica, can you talk about the relationship between these two characters and creating that relationship on screen with Isaac?

JS: We didn’t talk much when we were shooting. I think we had one dinner with Michel, but we really stuck to our lanes. Then Isaac told me afterwards that he didn’t want to speak to me because he was afraid of messing up. But it is true what Michel said in terms of, at the very beginning I was quite doubtful, I was very nervous when I read the script. I said to him, “These characters are really going up against each other and I’m going to bring a strong energy, so I need someone to meet that energy and not fold.” Michel was like, “I have a feeling it’s going to be okay,” and he was right. But I was nervous. To be honest, I was nervous up until our first day filming. Then I remember I went to Michel at a break, and I was like, “Oh, he’s great. You were right. He can withstand it.”

(L to R) Isaac Hernández and Jessica Chastain star in 'Dreams'. Photo: Greenwich Entertainment.
(L to R) Isaac Hernández and Jessica Chastain star in ‘Dreams’. Photo: Greenwich Entertainment.

MF: Finally, Isaac, what was it like working opposite Jessica and do you feel like you rose to the challenge?

IH: I mean, it’s not easy to show up to work. We met, I think, a few days before the first day of shooting at a restaurant and then showing up and we shot an intimate scene in a small room. Michel was giving Jessica one direction, and giving me completely the opposite one, and at some point, I didn’t know what to do. Do I give in to what she’s giving me right now or do I fire it back at her? I chose to fight her off and kind of stick to what Michel had directed me to do. It was amazing. At the end, I was able to do it because of the generosity that Jessica gave me and the support that Michel was giving me. I was able to trust the moment and be able to be present and really understand and listen to what the scene was creating. I related it immediately with working with a great ballerina, for example. You really feed on each other and if you’re able to listen to and be generous enough to wait for your colleague’s proposal, then something magical can happen. I felt so many times on the set that we were creating something that felt unique and true. So, it was wonderful. I was completely nervous, obviously. That’s why Jessica said she didn’t know if we would become friends during the filming, because maybe I would not be able to shoot the ending of the movie or maybe I would say something that would change the dynamics that we had and what the movie required. That made me nervous, and I would call Michel once a week and say, “How’s it going? He would say, “You’re doing great. Don’t change anything,” which is harder almost to then freeze your yourself on set for that time being, but it proved to be an extraordinary experience.

‘Mistresses’ TV writer Nina Raine adapted the script from Mary Gaitskill’s novella, which was hugely acclaimed when it was released in 2019 and praised for offering a nuanced distillation of the #MeToo movement.

The story follows Margot (Chastain) as accusations of misconduct unravel the career of her closest friend, the charming publisher Quin (Pine). Margot must decide whether loyalty, forgiveness or truth will define the end of their long, heady friendship.

When will ‘This is Pleasure’ be on screens?

Even with the star power attached, this one will be a while as it hasn’t yet locked down a distributor. But with the rights up for sale at the European Film Market, which kicks off this month, we’re sure it’ll be snapped up quickly.

2011 drama ‘The Help’ certainly –– pun entirely intended and apologized for –– helped boost the careers of Jessica Chastain and Octavia Spencer, since both were nominated for Oscars and Spencer took home the Best Supporting Actress trophy.

They’ve been looking to collaborate again since then for years and have now found the project in the shape of ‘Deck the Y’alls’, a new Christmas-set comedy.

It’s relatively early days for this one, with no director in place –– with a shoot planned for next year and Wanda Sykes also aboard to bring her comic stylings to the movie –– we’d expect it to be set up quickly.

The new movie, written by ‘Girls Trip’ scribe Tracy Oliver alongside Stefanie Williams, follows a New York baker named Rachel Stein (Chastain), who falls for Beau, a younger Southern gentleman, and heads to Charleston, South Carolina to spend Christmas with his family.

But over-protective matriarch Gladys Gibbes (Spencer) is a celebrity chef who clashes with Rachel.

There has been less entertaining news for the actor/producer, who saw the release of her Apple TV+ series ‘The Savant’ put on indefinite hold just three days before it was due to hit the streaming service.

The show, which stars Chastain, follows an undercover investigator known as “The Savant” who infiltrates online hate groups to stop domestic extremists before they act. Apple is seemingly worried about the series causing political blowback.

This was Apple’s statement on the delay:

“After careful consideration, we have made the decision to postpone ‘The Savant’. We appreciate your understanding and look forward to releasing the series at a future date.”

For her part, Chastain hit Instagram to explain that she’s “not aligned” with the decision to pause the show’s release…

Apple TV+ is clearly looking to stay in business with Jessica Chastain, locking down the busy actor (who has one show on the way for the streaming service already –– more on that below) and also securing the services of intense fellow star Adam Driver for a new series called ‘The Dealer.’

But in case the title has you thinking that this might somehow spin-off from the Chastain-starring poker drama movie ‘Molly’s Game,’ think again: it’s actually going to be set in the art world.

With Sam Gold aboard to direct and Lucas Hnath leading the writing, ‘The Dealer’ is described as a biting exploration of power, class, seduction and culture set inside the glittering world of the high-end art market.

Per Deadline, it’s told through the eyes of an aspiring super gallerist, played by Chastain, and the tangled relationship with her most gifted and unnerving artist, to be brought to screens by Driver.

Gold is a theatre director who won the Best Direction of a Musical Tony Award in 2015 for ‘Fun House.’ He, Hnath and Hnath’s long-time collaborator Sarah Lunnie worked together on ‘A Doll’s House, Part 2,’ a play written by Hnath, directed by Gold and dramaturged by Lunnie.

It earned Gold and Hnath Tony nominations in 2017, with its star Laurie Metcalf winning the award for Actress in a Leading Role in a Play. Lunnie also served as dramaturg for the Broadway production of Hnath’s play ‘Hillary & Clinton.’

Who else is behind the new series?

The new show is just the latest Apple TV+ series from production company Media Res, which already produces the Emmy– and SAG Award–winning drama ‘The Morning Show,’ which is headed into its fourth season, ‘Pachinko’ and ‘Extrapolations.’

It’s the fourth high-profile sale for the company over the last few months. It recently set up ‘The Band,’ an hourlong dramedy series starring Ben Stiller, at HBO and also has bisexual romance drama ‘Enigma Variations’ starring Jeremy Allen White percolating at Netflix.

After a bidding war, its Silicon Valley thriller ‘Thumblite,’ starring Rosamund Pike, landed at Netflix in September with a straight-to-series order. Coming up is ‘The Miniature Wife,’ a series at Peacock, starring Matthew Macfadyen.

What else is Jessica Chastain working on?

As we mentioned, Chastain already has another project, limited series ‘The Savant,’ in the works for Apple via her Freckle Films company.

The series is reportedly inspired by a true–life story entitled ‘Is It Possible to Stop a Mass Shooting Before It Happens?’ which featured in Cosmopolitan in August 2019 of a woman who has come to be known as “the Savant” who infiltrates online hate-groups in order to prevent large-scale public attacks.

Most recently seen in ‘Mother’s Instinct,’ Chastain has a few films coming up, including new drama ‘Dreams,’ which sees romance blossom between a wealthy socialite and a Mexican ballet dancer, intertwining their contrasting lives and cultures.

Chastain is also playing Goneril, in the Bernard Rose–directed Shakespeare adaptation ‘Lear Rex,’ which stars Al Pacino as Lear.

Then there’s crime thriller series ‘His & Hers’ –– though Chastain is only a producer on that one.

She has a typically busy schedule of projects she’s attached to, including Barry Levinson’s ‘Assassination’ (which also stars Pacino) and new drama ‘Losing Clementine,’ the latter one just as a producer.

Driver was most recently seen in Francis Ford Coppola’s ‘Megalopolis,’ and last worked on director Jim Jarmusch’s new drama ‘Father, Mother, Sister, Brother,’ which follows estranged siblings reuniting after years apart, forced to confront unresolved tensions and reevaluate their strained relationships with their emotionally distant parents.

It’ll premiere at the Cannes Film Festival next month but doesn’t yet have a set release date.

The actor is also attached to James Gray’s new drama ‘Paper Tiger’ and, assuming it comes together, he’ll be part of Michael Mann’s much-anticipated ‘Heat’ sequel.

And ‘The Dealer’ represents his first time starring in a TV series since he was one of the main characters on HBO’s ‘Girls.’

When will ‘The Dealer’ be on screens?

Depending on the actors’ busy schedules and how quickly this makes it through the process of development at Apple, this could shoot this year and land on the tech company’s streaming service in 2026.

One example? Barry Levinson’s latest movie, which will dig into the JFK conspiracy from a new perspective.

Titled ‘Assassination,’ the new film (per Deadline) has Oscar winner Jared Leto in talks to snatch one of its lead roles.

    What’s the story of ‘Assassination’?

Taking as its inspiration the infamous slaying of President John F. Kennedy in Texas in 1963, ‘Assassination’ will dig into the issue of who truly orchestrated the killing.

The film focuses on ground-breaking female crime reporter Dorothy Kilgallen played by Jessica Chastain.

When she suspects that Lee Harvey Oswald did not act alone, she uses her fame and influence to find President John F. Kennedy’s real killer. Kilgallen’s journey will put her up against the CIA, mafia bosses and the FBI, all who would love nothing more than to make her and this story disappear.

Levinson has financing for this one and is busy putting the pieces together. He’s looking to start the cameras rolling early next year in Boston.

    Who else is in ‘Assassination’?

Oscar® nominee, Al Pacino arrives on the red carpet of The 92nd Oscars® at the Dolby® Theatre in Hollywood, CA on Sunday, February 9, 2020.

In addition to Leto –– assuming he actually locks in his deal –– and Chastain, the cast will include the starry likes of Al Pacino, Brendan Fraser and Bryan Cranston.

And on the creative team front, the script is co-written by David Mamet, who in a rare case of collaboration, worked with Levinson and ‘Elvis’ writer Sam Bromell.

The new movie is produced by Corey Large and Jason Sosnoff, with Large also providing financing. John Burnham, Bernie Gewissler, Pia Patatian and Jordan Nott are the executive producers.

It’s quite a team and sounds intriguing, though it’ll have to go some to compete with the likes of ‘JFK’ and ‘Parkland.’

He’s also attached to be part of the cast for ‘Across the Spider-Verse’ co-director Kemp Powers’ new film ‘Lunik Heist’ and will be seen in Darren Aronofsky’s new horror movie ‘Adrift.’

Bona fide legend Pacino has a number of movies on the way. He’s in the cast for Johnny Depp’s directorial debut, ‘Modi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness’ and has the likes of ‘The Ritual,’ ‘Killing Castro,’ ‘Hand of Dante,’ ‘Easy’s Waltz’ and ‘Billy Knight’ making their way through post-production.

He’s more personally involved in his next Shakespeare-based film, starring in and producing a new adaptation of ‘King Lear’ called ‘Lear Rex,’ directed by Bernard Rose. That movie should be in theaters later in 2025 and also features Chastain.

Talking of, she’s starring in Michael Franco’s new crime drama pic ‘Dreams’ and is a producer on a variety of other projects, including ‘Losing Clementine’ and ‘Wayland.’

On the TV front, she’s starring in a new series called ‘Savant’ about a deep-cover investigator who infiltrates hate groups and looks to bring down the nation’s most violent men.

Fraser, who scored an Oscar for his performance in ‘The Whale,’ has ‘Rental Family’ on the way and is at work on new World War II drama ‘Pressure,’ in which he plays President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Breaking Bad’ veteran Cranston is keeping busy, with a role on new Seth Rogen comedy TV series ‘The Studio.’

He’ll also be seen in comedy drama movie ‘Everything’s Going to Be Great,’ which will be out next year.

Perhaps most excitingly, he’ll reprise the role of Hal in a limited series revival of sitcom ‘Malcolm in the Middle,’ with co-stars Frankie Muniz and Jane Kaczmarek also returning for a four-episode update of the family’s story from original series creator Linwood Boomer.

The new episodes will appear on Disney+, but a date has yet to be set for that one.

  • Movie Review: ‘Memory’

Peter Sarsgaard and Jessica Chastain in 'Memory.'
(L to R) Peter Sarsgaard and Jessica Chastain in ‘Memory.’ Photo: Ketchup Entertainment.

Opening in theaters in limited release on December 22nd before releasing wide on January 5th is ‘Memory,’ starring Jessica Chastain, Peter Sarsgaard, Merritt Wever, Josh Charles, Brooke Timber, and Jessica Harper.

    Initial Thoughts

‘Memory’ is a small and resolutely independent feature from writer-director Michel Franco, the Mexican filmmaker behind such provocative, frequently bleak films as ‘After Lucia,’ ‘Sundown,’ and the frightening, politically charged ‘New Order.’ With ‘Memory,’ he begins the film in a way that makes one think he’s heading down yet another dark path, but then takes an abrupt turn, making ‘Memory’ a movie that at least affirms the possibility that people can find love and hope again. Anchored by a fantastic cast, ‘Memory’ is a cinematic chamber piece that leaves one both haunted and moved.

    Story and Direction

    Jessica Chastain in 'Memory.'

Sylvia (Jessica Chastain) is a single mother who works at a facility for developmentally disabled adults. She’s in recovery, regularly attends her AA meetings, and carefully monitors the activities of her teenage daughter Anna (Brooke Timber), to the point that Anna often spends nights away with her cousins at the home of Sylvia’s sister Olivia (Merritt Wever).

Estranged from her own mother (Jessica Harper) and with a history of substance addiction and sexual abuse, Sylvia keeps as much of the world out as possible – locking the door and setting the alarm in her apartment, located in a gritty part of Brooklyn, without even thinking about it. But all that changes when she is convinced by Olivia to attend her high school reunion – at which a strange man abruptly seats himself next to her and then follows her home when she leaves.

When she wakes up the next morning to find the man sleeping in the rain outside her building, Sylvia’s caretaker instinct takes over – and she soon learns that the man, Saul (Peter Sarsgaard), is a widower suffering from early onset dementia. He constantly loses track of where he is and what he’s doing, and lives with his brother Isaac (Josh Charles). But Sylvia thinks she remembers him from their high school days – and believes he was involved in some of the abuse she suffered in high school.

The truth turns out to be different than she thought, and no one is more surprised than Sylvia when she is asked by Isaac if she can work as Saul’s caretaker. As a result, their relationship takes a turn in an unpredictable direction – unpredictable because of Saul’s affliction and because these two people are walled off from the world in their own separate ways.

Michel Franco presents the story and characters here in the same unflinching, minimalist fashion with which he carved out the more brutal horrors of ‘After Lucia’ and ‘New Order.’ The opening plays almost like a horror movie, as Saul unsettlingly follows Sylvia home for no discernible reason and to her mounting unease. Then when she confronts him about the past, there’s a sense that ‘Memory’ will turn into a dark psychological exercise. But Franco pivots again, and while ‘Memory’ does explore some disturbing material, the director finds a careful balance with a story of two people finding a connection and giving themselves a second chance at living again.

The tone of ‘Memory’ rarely wavers, and each piece of Franco’s uncluttered script feels real and purposeful (it’s helped by the film’s real New York locations, which are almost all off the usual beaten track of filming in the Big Apple). This is a restrained movie, but the questions it raises about memory, forgiveness, and empathy are profound ones.

    The Performances

Jessica Chastain, of course, is one of the finest actresses of her generation, and Peter Sarsgaard is quietly one of the best around as well, with both actors bringing a fierce intelligence and direct emotional wavelength to each performance they give. ‘Memory’ is no different: Chastain effortlessly swerves away from the showier work of her Oscar-winning turn in ‘Eyes of Tammy Faye,’ playing Sylvia with no makeup, drab clothing, and a muted style, as befitting a character who wants to retreat from the world. Yet you can feel the tension simmering within her, and when it reaches a boiling point during a jarring breakdown at her sister’s house, you realize just how much pain Sylvia has been carrying around.

Sarsgaard, meanwhile, plays Saul as a man with a sort of film over him; every once in a while that film melts away and the real Saul – a kind, gentle, passionate man — breaks out like a ray of sunshine. It’s a subtle piece of work that avoids many of the cliches of playing someone with dementia that might show up in a lesser-written character. Yet you can see Saul struggling as he must literally live his life from moment to moment, while knowing that the blank spaces between those moments can lead to disaster.

The rest of the small supporting cast is quite excellent as well, with Merritt Wever of ‘Nurse Jackie’ fame doing her usual outstanding work as Olivia, whose loving yet awkward relationship with Sylvia hides some terrible secrets. And as fans of ‘70s cult cinema classics ‘Suspiria’ and ‘Phantom of the Paradise,’ the sight of Jessica Harper is a welcome one, especially in a meatier role than she usually gets.

    Final Thoughts

This is a different kind of film for Michel Franco, and a refreshing change of pace for him. While it still probes into dark corners of human behavior, ‘Memory’ does strike a more positive chord in some ways. Yet even without its more tragic aspects, the film still makes one think about our own family dynamics, the way we conduct our lives, and our assumptions about others – not to mention the way we choose to remember (or forget) all of those. It’s a movie with incredibly subtle performances and few “big” moments, yet its characters and story stay with you – and can hit close to home.

‘Memory’ receives 8 out of 10 stars.
