    • Joseph Zada and Whitney Peak are playing the lead roles.
    • Francis Lawrence is again directing the movie.

Here’s some big news for ‘Hunger Games’ fans starving for any update on the next prequel movie, ‘Sunrise on the Reaping,’ directed once more by regular filmmaker Francis Lawrence.

Variety reports that Jennifer Lawrence (no, no relation) and Josh Hutcherson, who were two of the key roles in the original movies, will be back to reprise their iconic characters.

Lawrence will be Katniss Everdeen and Hutcherson will return as Peeta Mellark. “But Moviefone,” we hear you ask, “the new movie takes place years before their films. How will this work?”

Simple: Suzanne Collins’ book includes an epilogue set during Katniss and Peeta’s time where they appear with Haymitch (which suggests Woody Harrelson, who plays the older Haymitch, will also make an appearance, although his voice does appear in the teaser trailer.)

While the previous prequel took place 64 years before the events of the original trilogy, ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’ is set 24 years before that trio of original films in the world of Panem, commencing on the morning of the reaping of the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell.

Those games are an important event in the canon as the victor was Haymitch Abernathy, the only winner from District 12 before Lawrence’s Everdeen and Hutcherson’s Mellark’s tie win. Haymitch continues on to become a mentor, a character in the original movies played by Harrelson.

Who else has been cast in ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’?

The cast already includes included Joseph Zada and Whitney Peak, who will play Haymitch Abernathy and the woman he loves, Lenore Dove Baird.

In addition to the two leads, we also now know that McKenna Grace, who has appeared in the recent ‘Ghostbusters’ movies, will be in the movie as Maysilee Donner, Haymitch’s fellow District 12 Tribute, while Jesse Plemons has the role of Plutarch Heavensbee, as brought to life by Philip Seymour Hoffman in the original movies.

Ralph Fiennes is the calculating President Snow while Kieran Culkin will be Caesar Flickerman (the eccentric host character played in the first film series by Stanley Tucci.)

Elle Fanning is on to be a younger Effie Trinket; the effusive stylist as portrayed by Elizabeth Banks in the original ‘Hunger Games’ movies.

Glenn Close is Sickle, the cruel escort to the District 12 Tributes, and Billy Porter is playing Magno Stift is her estranged husband and the Tributes’ uninspired designer.

When will ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’ be in theaters?

Lionsgate will have the new movie in theaters on November 20th, 2026.

Looks like audiences were more than ready to get back on the hunt.

‘Predator: Badlands,’ the newest movie featuring the titular alien creatures, soared to the top of the box office this past weekend, earning a healthy $40 million at the box office.

The movie, which was budgeted at $105 million (not counting advertising costs), is the most successful launch for the ‘Predator’ franchise, overtaking the previous record holder, 2004’s franchise crossover ‘Alien vs. Predator.’

It’s the latest success in the series for co-writer/director Dan Trachtenberg, who previously made the likes of ‘Prey’ and the animated ‘Predator: Killer of Killers,’ both of which were well received but were released via Hulu.

The new ‘Predator’ outing was just as successful outside the States, earning another $40 million for an $80 million global opening. That’s a great start, and points to it reaching profitability.

Here’s Comscore’s Paul Dergarabedian on the movie’s success:

“ ‘Predator: Badlands’ shows how unpredictable and dynamic the marketplace can be. All it takes is one over-performance to get the industry back on track. This is a great lead in for what promises to be one of the better months of November for the industry.”

Unfortunately for the box office prospects, ‘Badlands’ was one of the few movies to make much of an impact this week, the rest of the new arrivals limited to less wide releases and awards contenders.

Faith-based entry ‘Sarah’s Oil’ fared best, opening in fourth place with $4.5 million. ‘Nuremberg’, a drama about the historic post-World War II trials, did solid business, landing fifth with $4.1 million, though given its higher-profile and starry cast (Russell Crowe and Rami Malek among them) it likely hoped for more.

Still, stars really couldn’t save Lynne Ramsay’s latest, psychodrama ‘Die My Love.’ Despite Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson in the lead roles, the story of post-partum depression and dysfunction tanked with audiences, earning $2.8 million for eighth.

And that’s still better than the Sydney Sweeney-starring boxing biopic ‘Christy’, which couldn’t even crack the top 10, stumbling to 11th with $1.3 million. It’s the latest flop opening for the actor and could well lead to chatter that her rising star status is under serious threat (at least for now).

    Initial Thoughts

Lynne Ramsay has written and directed only five feature films in 26 years, and ‘Die My Love’ comes eight years after her previous effort, 2017’s ‘You Were Never Really Here.’ Based on Ariana Harwicz’s 2012 novel of the same name, ‘Die My Love’ treads similar psychological ground as some of Ramsay’s earlier films, with this one portraying both postpartum depression and the dissolution of an unhappy marriage.

But despite an incendiary performance from Jennifer Lawrence, and strong support from Robert Pattinson and Sissy Spacek, ‘Die My Love’ never really takes off. It’s filmed incredibly well – by now a Ramsay trademark – and has a string of powerful moments, yet at some point it settles into a kind of cyclical structure that just ends up repeating itself, making for an initially absorbing but frustrating viewing experience.

    Story and Direction

Director Lynne Ramsay on the set of 'Die My Love'. Photo Kimberley French/Mubi.

The film opens inside the decaying, shabby farmhouse that Grace (Lawrence) and Jackson (Pattinson) are moving into, which we learn belonged to Jackson’s uncle before he offed himself upstairs. But the only ghosts in the house are the ones in Grace’s head. They’ve moved to the middle of nowhere in Montana to get out of city life and let Grace concentrate on writing a novel, while one-time musician Jackson settles into a job as a truck driver that takes him away for days at a time.

At first they romp around the house like playful, overgrown children, sexing and drinking with relish, but once Grace gets pregnant and gives birth, all that comes to an end – even though Grace is still horny, Jackson doesn’t want anything to do with that and his trips get even longer. That leaves Grace alone with the baby and her own increasingly fractured and tormented thoughts – which soon turn into increasingly destructive actions that seem to tip into full-blown psychosis.

Director Lynne Ramsay on the set of 'Die My Love'. Photo Kimberley French/Mubi.
Director Lynne Ramsay on the set of ‘Die My Love’. Photo Kimberley French/Mubi.

Is it the loneliness or the postpartum depression that does Grace in? It’s left ambiguous, but we suspect the former more than the latter. Either way, whether she literally tears the bathroom apart or has a quick (possibly imaginary) fling with the biker down the road (a barely there LaKeith Stanfield), Grace is on a downward spiral – until she isn’t. She gets better for a bit, and then does it all again, rinse and repeat.

And that’s ultimately the problem with ‘Die My Love’: it ends up chasing its own tail, becoming more stylized and self-indulgent as it goes along and less interesting to watch. Jackson and his mom, Pam (Sissy Spacek) try to help but seem hapless in the face of Grace’s force-of-nature rush to set her whole life on fire (dog lovers beware: things don’t end well for the family pet). There are moments of clarity and beauty and profundity, but they’re fleeting in an otherwise exhausting catalog of erratic behavior that portrays mental illness as a kind of Grand Guignol.

    Cast and Performances

Jennifer Lawrence is at her best when she just lets raw emotion and impulse pour out of her, which makes ‘Die My Love’ something of a tour de force. Unafraid to bare her flesh and equally fearless about getting it dirty and bloodied, Lawrence plunges headlong into the role of Grace with fervor, keeping your eyes glued on her even when the rest of the movie falters. She approaches the character with both dark humor and grim abandon, daring the viewer to stay with her on the ride – and succeeding through her strength as an actor alone.

Robert Pattinson does his best here, but Jackson is simply not as present, either physically or psychically, and the character is merely reactive to whatever Grace throws at him. Sissy Spacek injects some empathy into the proceedings, but in a similar fashion, the role of Pam is not developed enough. It’s also a shame we don’t see more of Nick Nolte as Jackson’s dementia-addled father, whose few moments onscreen are moving.

    Final Thoughts

Jennifer Lawrence in 'Die My Love'. Photo Kimberley French/Mubi.
Jennifer Lawrence in ‘Die My Love’. Photo Kimberley French/Mubi.

‘Die My Love’ is the second movie this season about a young mother cracking under the strain, with ‘If I Had Legs I’d Kick You’ also making the experience a harrowing one. The films both use dark humor and surreal imagery, but differ in important ways: Grace, in her own fashion, embraces motherhood, while Rose Byrne’s Linda in ‘If I Had Legs’ admits at a pivotal moment that she didn’t want to be a mother in the first place.

It’s up to the individual viewer how relatable each performance is, but the work by both actors is Oscar-worthy even if neither film develops a clear narrative or theme. In the meantime, ‘Die My Love’ is Lynne Ramsay’s most internalized film since her early efforts ‘Ratcatcher’ and ‘Morvern Callar,’ and perhaps her most difficult to embrace – and even a harder one to love.

‘Die My Love’ receives a score of 65 out of 100.

What is the plot of ‘Die My Love’?

Grace and Jackson move from New York City to Jackson’s rural childhood home in Montana in search of a quieter life. As they adjust to their new surroundings and become parents, Grace begins to struggle with feelings of isolation and psychological distress. Her deteriorating mental health gradually drives their marriage into unsettling and unpredictable territory.

    • A solo movie for The Muppets’ Miss Piggy is in early development.

Here’s something we’re not sure we –– or, indeed, anyone –– could have predicted. Oscar winners Jennifer Lawrence (‘Joy’) and Emma Stone (‘Poor Things’) are developing a movie about diva-tastic Muppet star Miss Piggy.

And yes, we checked: it’s not April 1st.

    0KcurxRYjbUuy27abnXdD3

Appearing on Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers ‘Las Culturistas’ podcast, Lawrence broke the news:

“I don’t know if I can announce this, but I’m just going to. Emma Stone and I are producing a Miss Piggy movie and Cole is writing it.”

Cole, in this case, is Cole Escola, who won an Emmy for creating Broadway hit ‘Oh, Mary!’ And this development marks the latest in something of a Muppets resurgence, since a new iteration of ‘The Muppet Show’ is also in the works.

    What is Miss Piggy’s story?

While she’s long been as one of the best-known central Muppet characters, the spotlight-hogging diva didn’t start that way.

Starting as a chorus pig on ‘The Muppet Show,’ Miss Piggy gradually became a bigger part of the series, before becoming an icon in the late 1970s and early ’80s, often performed and voiced by Frank Oz (who also played Yoda in the ‘Star Wars’ galaxy)

Despite Kermit being the star, Miss Piggy has long stolen the spotlight from her froggy beau, and is known for her both her quick temper and kung-fu moves.

Quite what the new movie will be about remains to be seen –– could we see the story of her meteoric rise?

According to Lawrence, both she and Stone are likely to appear in the film.

Lawrence will be back in theaters starring alongside Robert Pattinson in ‘Die My Love,’ which is released on November 7. She’s also attached to various projects including mystery thriller ‘The Wives’ and a movie about the life of novelist and Jazz Age socialite Zelda Fitzgerald during her marriage to author F. Scott Fitzgerald.

As for Stone, she’s in cinemas with ‘Bugonia,’ her latest collaboration with director Yorgos Lanthimos.

When will the Miss Piggy movie be in theaters?

All of this, of course, is still floating in the rumor sphere right now since Muppet rights holders Disney has yet to announce anything.

DiCaprio has Paul Thomas Anderson’s much buzzed-about ‘One Battle After Another’ headed to cinemas this weekend, and while box office prospects haven’t been as great as Warner Bros. might like given the hefty $130 million price tag, it has enjoyed enthusiastic reviews and seems positioned for plenty of awards buzz.

He’s also attached to another Scorsese project, a Hawaii-set based-on-truth story of gangsters and territory that is also set to star Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt (though it appears that it’ll now be in development a little longer since the new Marty/Leo team-up is gathering speed.

As for Lawrence, she’ll next be seen in Lynne Ramsay’s ‘Die My Love’, co-starring Robert Pattinson and due in theaters in November.

When will ‘What Happens at Night’ be in theaters?

With the deal for Apple still not locked down, expect to wait a while to learn when this one will arrive. But even assuming the company comes aboard, chances are it’ll look to find one of its regular distribution partners such as Paramount and Warner Bros. to handle getting it into theaters.

The casting news for the latest ‘Hunger Games’ prequel –– once more based on a book by Suzanne Collins, this time subtitled ‘Sunrise on the Reaping’ –– has been ramping up.

We recently learned that Elle Fanning has been linked with the role of a younger Effie Trinket; the effusive stylist as portrayed by Elizabeth Banks in the original ‘Hunger Games’ movies. But that has yet to be confirmed.

We do know, however, who has won the lead roles: Joseph Zada and Whitney Peak will play Haymitch Abernathy and Lenore Dove Baird.

Here’s Lionsgate Motion Picture Group co-president Erin Westerman on the casting:

“ ‘The Hunger Games’ franchise has long been a launching pad for remarkable young actors, and Jo and Whitney carry that legacy forward with incredible heart, depth, and fire. After auditioning hundreds of gifted performers from around the world, these two stood out — not just for their talent, but for the emotional truth they brought to these iconic roles. Haymitch has always been a fan favorite, and his origin story is one of the most anticipated in the franchise. His relationship with Lenore Dove is deeply woven into the emotional history of Panem. We can’t wait for fans to experience the story that shaped one of the most compelling characters in the series.”

With more casting announcements coming in, Jesse Plemons (‘Kinds of Kindness‘) has been cast as Plutarch Heavensbee, the role played by the late Philip Seymour Hoffman in ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1‘ and ‘Part 2‘.

While the previous prequel took place 64 years before the events of the original trilogy, ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’ is set 24 years before that trio of Jennifer Lawrence films in the world of Panem, commencing on the morning of the reaping of the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell.

Those games are an important event in the canon as the victor was Haymitch Abernathy, the only winner from District 12 before Lawrence’ Katniss Everdeen and Josh Hutcherson’s Peeta Mellark’s tie win. Haymitch continues on to become a mentor, a character in the original movies played by Woody Harrelson.

While Lenore is only briefly mentioned in the book ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay,’ she’s a full character in ‘Sunrise on the Reaping.’

Who else has been rumored for ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’?

Zada’s casting puts paid to the rumors that Charlie Plummer, who appears in Lawrence’s Stephen King adaptation ‘The Long Walk,’ due in theaters on September 12th, would take Haymitch role.

That might end up throwing doubt on the idea that Ralph Fiennes will also end up in the movie, to play Coriolanus Snow, as brought to screens by Donald Sutherland in the original films and Tom Blyth in previous prequel effort ‘Songbirds and Snakes.’

And then there was word that Kieran Culkin is mulling an offer to play Caesar Flickerman (the eccentric host character played in the first film series by Stanley Tucci.) We’ll wait and see if there is an official announcement about any of them.

Here’s Suzanne Collins’ statement on the new book and movie:

“With ‘Sunrise on the Reaping’, I was inspired by David Hume’s idea of implicit submission and, in his words, ‘the easiness with which the many are governed by the few… The story also lent itself to a deeper dive into the use of propaganda and the power of those who control the narrative. The question ‘Real or not real?’ seems more pressing to me every day. From the beginning, Lionsgate has been a wonderful home and partner for the ‘Hunger Games’ franchise, and I’m very excited to be collaborating with Adam and the team as we bring this next story to theaters in 2026.”

And here’s Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Chair Adam Fogelson:

“Suzanne Collins is a master storyteller and our creative north star. We couldn’t be more fortunate than to be guided and trusted by a collaborator whose talent and imagination are so consistently brilliant. We know ‘Hunger Games’ fans worldwide will be spellbound by where Suzanne has focused this next extraordinary story. The Second Quarter Quell is legendary and looms large over the history of the Games, even into the time of Katniss Everdeen a quarter-century later. Like fans around the globe, we are eagerly anticipating this exciting return to Panem.”

When will ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’ be in theaters?

Lionsgate already has a release date in place for this one: the studio wants the new movie in theaters on November 20th, 2026.

We’ve known for a few months now that Lionsgate quickly snapped up the rights to adapt Suzanne Collins’ latest ‘Hunger Games’ prequel, ‘Sunshine on the Reaping.’

    1430290

In the time since the book and movie were announced, things have moved on considerably –– Billy Ray has written the adaptation and regular ‘Hunger Games’ director Francis Lawrence (who also made the previous prequel, ‘The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes’) confirmed he will handle this next outing.

With production gearing up for this July in Germany, we’ve reached the casting stage and the rumors have begun to swirl.

Nexus Point News, which has been on top of a couple of scoops about possible actors, brings word that Elle Fanning has been offered the role of a younger Effie Trinket.

Effie, of course, is the effusive stylist as portrayed by Elizabeth Banks in the original ‘Hunger Games’ movies.

What’s the story of ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’?

'The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping' opens in theaters on November 20, 2026.
‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’ opens in theaters on November 20, 2026.

For ‘Sunshine on the Reaping,’ Effie serves as a stylist for the District 12 tributes in order to assist her sister, Proserpina. Although she supports the Hunger Games in principle, Effie shows genuine compassion for the tributes and treats them with kindness and care.

Who else has been rumored for ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’?

Nexus Point news was also behind the story that Charlie Plummer is the filmmaker’s likely top candidate to play the younger Haymitch.

Plummer, who has appeared in the likes of 2019 miniseries ‘Looking for Alaska,’ has also been seen in last year’s ‘The Return’ and 2022’s ‘Moonfall.’

Perhaps most tellingly, he’s one of the leads of Francis Lawrence’s next film to be released, the Stephen King adaptation ‘The Long Walk,’ due in theaters on September 12th and hyped at the company’s recent CinemaCon presentation.

And talking of ‘The Return,’ regular scooper Daniel Richtman has reported that that film’s star, Ralph Fiennes, is also being courted for the movie, this time to play Coriolanus Snow, as brought to screens by Donald Sutherland in the original films and Tom Blyth in ‘Songbirds and Snakes.’

It would mark the latest big book-based franchise that Fiennes could be joining after a slightly successful series of movies about a certain boy wizard.

And he’s not all –– Richtman also brings word that recent Oscar winner Kieran Culkin is mulling an offer to play Caesar Flickerman (the eccentric host character played in the first film series by Stanley Tucci.)

‘Hunger Games’ doesn’t scream the sort of movie that Culkin usually appears in, but Oscar wins sometimes lead to interesting choices.

Given their shared affinity for switching between indie fare and bigger movies, it’s almost surprising that Robert Pattinson and Jennifer Lawrence haven’t so far ended up sharing spots on a cast list.

But now, thanks to a new thriller from director Lynne Ramsay, that cinematic wrong is being rectified, as –– at least, in its developmental stage –– they’re both attached to star in ‘Die, My Love’.

According to Deadline, the story of ‘Die My Love’ (co-written by Ramsay and Enda Walsh) is set in a remote forgotten rural area and follows a mother (Lawrence) who struggles to maintain her sanity as she battles with psychosis.

The trade site had no information to offer as to who Pattinson might play in the movie.

Lawrence, in addition to starring, will co-produce the movie with creative partner Justine Ciarrocchi via their Excellent Cadaver company.

But the film has attracted one other big name: Martin Scorsese will also be a producer on the movie, while Black Label Media is stumping up the money to get it made.

What else are Robert Pattinson and Jennifer Lawrence attached to?

Pattinson has a couple of movies either on the way or in the works: he’ll next be seen in Bong Joon Ho’s comedy sci-fi thriller ‘Mickey 17’, playing a cloned worker in space who discovers tough truths about his existence.

He’ll also be back in the Batsuit for Matt Reevessequel to ‘The Batman’, though that isn’t expected in theaters until 2026. On the producing front, he’s part of the team putting together a new take on 1981 thriller ‘Possession’ with ‘Smile’ director Parker Finn overseeing. That recently landed a deal with Paramount. And he’s also on board spec script ‘How to Save a Marriage’.

As for Lawrence, she has a variety of movies still in development, including a potential role as Ava Gardner in a Frank Sinatra biopic that Scorsese is looking to pull together. And she’s attached to a lead role in ‘Challengers’ director Luca Guadagnino’s new film, ‘Burial Rites’.

When will ‘Die, My Love’ be in theaters?

The new thriller has yet to lock in a studio or streaming home, so any talk of release dates at this point would be premature.

    • Both movies are facing challenges right now.

He may not have taken home a big haul of awards for ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’, but Martin Scorsese shows no sign of backing away from making movies. He’s got two big projects –– both of which have been percolating on his To Do list for a few years –– that he’s looking to now shoot back to back.

And one, a drama about a particularly fractious time in legendary crooner Frank Sinatra’s personal life, is a particular passion project, and one that he’s finally pushing to put together with Leonardo DiCaprio (of course!) and Jennifer Lawrence starring. So let’s take a look at these two new potential movies, shall we?

What is Martin Scorsese’s Frank Sinatra biopic?

When he was out promoting his 2016 religious drama ‘Silence’, Scorsese dropped word that he had been looking to make a Frank Sinatra film with DiCaprio starring. It had been in development since at least 2011, with ‘Field of DreamsPhil Alden Robinson writing a script.

Little is known about the exact story at the time, but since Lawrence is on to be Ava Gardner, who infamously broke up Sinatra’s marriage to Nancy Barbato (and became his second wife), you can imagine why this one hit a snag with the singer’s family. Tina Sinatra controls the late performer’s estate, and she seems none too happy with Scorsese’s plans.

Apple, which handed the director a $215 million budget for ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ is, according to Variety, looking to stay in business with the director, though Sony is currently the front-runner to make the movie.

Yet the director is still aiming to make this movie once he’s wrapped on the Jesus film. Which brings us to that…

What is Martin Scorsese’s new film about Jesus?

'Killers of the Flower Moon' director Martin Scorsese.
‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ director Martin Scorsese.

In the same report about the Sinatra film, Variety mentions that Scorsese would first want to revisit the life of Jesus, who he infamously brought to screens in 1988’s ‘The Last Temptation of Christ’.

Life of Jesus,’, which Scorsese has been drumming up independent financing to make, would be based on Shūsaku Endō’s 1973 book. It’s the same approach he took to ‘Silence’ (which also was adapted from an Endō novel). And it might also have another ‘Silence’ connection, since one of that film’s stars, Andrew Garfield, is being considered for the Jesus project, though it’s unclear if the 40-year-old is being eyed for the titular role or to play one of the disciples. Miles Teller has also been linked to the film, which Scorsese wants to kick off shooting later this year in Israel, Italy and Egypt.

That first location is the one that might cause the most trouble, since the current war between Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas is affecting the region.

We’ll see if this either film truly gets moving at last, but Scorsese certainly seems committed to having them both on screen before he retires (take that, Quentin Tarantino!)

When would either new Scorsese film hit theaters?

No details are available for either film’s release plans, especially since they don’t yet have confirmed distribution –– or even schedules at this point.
