It has been over three years since ‘Peacemaker‘ Season 1, but the time has finally arrived for Season 2 to grace our screens. The new, highly anticipated season premieres Thursday, August 21st on HBO Max at 9 pm ET/PT.

John Cena returns as Christopher Smith, also known as Peacemaker, in the lead role. He is joined by the rest of the 11th Street Kids – Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland), John Economos (Steve Agee), Vigilante (Freddie Stroma), and Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks). Season 2 is written by James Gunn, however he only directs three episodes with Peter Sollett, Greg Mottola, and Alethea Jones stepping in to direct the others.

    Initial Thoughts

‘Peacemaker’ Season 2 has the daunting task of transitioning from the DC Extended Universe to the new DC Universe. When he became co-CEO of DC James Gunn stated that the majority of previous projects would not be canon in this new universe, with the exception of a few things, including ‘Peacemaker’ Season 1.

That said, it did need to be slightly altered. Because of this, many fans are going to be cautiously optimistic going in. Have no fear, the adjustments are adressed from the very start of the season – be sure you don’t skip the “Previously in the DCU” section.

    Script and Direction

Jennifer Holland in 'Peacemaker' season 2. Photo: Jessica Miglio/Max.
Jennifer Holland in ‘Peacemaker’ season 2. Photo: Jessica Miglio/Max.

Thankfully, James Gunn is a brilliant storyteller, so he was able to do this seamlessly, not leaving room for any questions or confusion. As always, he takes the time to put a love and appreciation into the scripts that he is writing and knows how to tell a good story.

Stepping back into this wacky world, with these characters who are often down on their luck, might have taken longer than viewers would have liked, but all can be forgiven because the first five episodes of the season (which is what press were given for review purposes) are great.

As seen in the trailers, Peacemaker discovers another dimension in which the grass seems a whole lot greener. This forces him to look deep inside himself and decide what he truly wants out of life.

At the same time, the rest of the 11th Street Kids are dealing with their own issues. No one has it easy, but isn’t that true to the nature of the world? We are all going through something at any given time. It is this relatability that will have viewers hanging onto every word.

Multiverses are hard to explain, and very difficult to keep the attention of the audience. It needs to be done exactly right to make sense and thanks to great writing and direction, ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2 perfectly transitions from the DCEU to DCU.

It is not required to see ‘Superman‘ before diving into this new season. There are mentions of the events of the film, and even though they do play a key role in the series, it does a great job of letting viewers know the details they need to. That said, it will certainly enhance the viewing exprience if you have seen it.

    Cast and Performances

Due to the nature of this season of ‘Peacemaker’, much of the cast has to flex their strengths as actors. Some of them are playing two versions of themselves while others are playing different versions of the characters we got to know in season one. It is always impressive when someone can pull this off and to have so many of them doing it in multiple episodes is no easy feat.

The chemistry between the cast is what has always been at the center of this series. That is what made these misfits so lovable. Something that James Gunn has always been good at is making viewers care about people that are not always perfect – sometimes far from it. But it is the stellar performances and the way the actors dove into these characters that made them unforgettable.

John Cena does a wonderul job as Peacemaker, especially taking into consideration the diliema he is put in almost immediately. It is easy to see the internal struggle he is putting himself through, which makes it impossible not to root for him even more.

Jennifer Holland once again shines as Emilia Harcourt. She knows how to give her a hard exterior that fans want to see be chipped away. Every so often we get a peek at a softer side, but don’t be fooled, she knows how to kick serious butt, and we love to watch it.

Frank Grillo in 'Peacemaker' season 2. Photo: Jessica Miglio/Max.
Frank Grillo in ‘Peacemaker’ season 2. Photo: Jessica Miglio/Max.

Season 2 delivers more of the same, but not in a redundant way. There are a lot of heartfelt and emotional conversations being had. Some rifts are formed, which become difficult to watch, but surely keeps things interesting. The same off-the-wall humor is there with moments that might send you into laughing fits.

Of course the entire returning cast is wonderful. It is clear they know these characters inside and out. That said, Frank Grillo coming in as Rick Flag Sr. is one of the biggest standouts of ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2. He voiced this character in ‘Creature Commandos‘ and briefly appeared as him in live-action in ‘Superman’, but his journey in this series is completely captivating. He is extremely vulnerable, but also volatile, and easily one of the best written characters of the season from what we have seen so far.

    Final Thoughts

‘Peacemaker’ Season 2 is able to capture the same craziness of the first season. Writer James Gunn knows how to tell a story that will have fans cracking up one minute and wiping away tears the next. Having to retcon some events can be a scary situation, but he handled this wonderfully.

It is lovely to see these characters together on screen again. With just three episodes to follow, it is hard to say where things will go, but the stakes are high, as are the emotions. There has to be a reason they were held back from press, and considering the end of episode five, the possibilities seem endless.

What’s the story of ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2?

In season 2, Peacemaker (Cena) discovers an alternate world where life is everything he wishes it could be. But this discovery also forces him to face his traumatic past and take the future into his own hands.

Who is in the cast of ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2?

    • John Cena as Christopher Smith / Peacemaker

    • Steve Agee as John Economos

    • ‘Peacemaker’s second season brought DC to Hall H.
    • Show creator James Gunn and star John Cena were among those on the panel.
    • Gunn talked up where the season fits into the DC Universe.

Who would have imagined that ‘Peacemaker’, designed as a spin-off from James Gunn’s 2021 DC movie ‘The Suicide Squad’, would be one of the few elements to remain in place once the filmmaker took over DC Studios and began building out his own mythology.

Well, Gunn, obviously, as he’s using Season 2 of the show to expand on the story he started telling in this summer’s ‘Superman’.

    tj0MlYZpL4B5pcVJfoIJe1

And Comic-Con was naturally the place for him to show off new looks at the returning series, which has John Cena starring as the blundering, blustering vigilante, alongside offering hints of other DC Studios projects going forward.

To the surprise of almost no one, Cena showed up in full Peacemaker costume. He does this a lot for promotional events. Hope he has them washed in between appearances.

Gunn had this to say about how the show connects with ‘Superman’:

“The show happens a month after the events in ‘Superman’. There’s a lot of the characters [who] return in [this] season of ‘Peacemaker’. In the very first episode, we have Guy Gardner, but there’s a lot more as we go down the line. But it is definitely a part of the DCU now.”

Lest you forget, Guy Gardner is played by Nathan Fillion, reprising his ‘Superman’ role.

A clip (which will not be publicly released) from the new season was shown to attendees, featuring Holland’s Emilia Harcourt kicking ass in a bar but a new trailer is now online:

    Bpj7G4CK

The new season will see Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr. seeking revenge for Peacemaker having killed his son (in ‘The Suicide Squad’). And our hero –– to stretch the term to its widest interpretation — seeks a new life in an alternate dimension where he really does get to be a good guy.

There was also a look at the new opening credits –– still a dance number, but with new music and some different characters added.

And Gunn reveals that the music will, as is usual for his projects, be on point:

“I mean, first of all, I think the soundtrack this season is my favorite soundtrack I’ve ever done. It’s so good with so many bands I love. It is in line with the soundtrack from the first season, but it’s a lot more modern bands, actually a lot more songs from the past, you know, 10-15, years or so.”

When will ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2 be on screens?

‘Peacemaker’ Season 2 lands on HBO Max on August 21st with its first episode, followed by seven more episodes weekly.

    • Frank Grillo will join ‘Peacemaker’ for Season 2.
    • He’s playing Rick Flag Sr.
    • It’s a role he’ll also voice in the animated series Creature Commandos.

We already knew that genre favorite and all-round bad-ass Frank Grillo had made the leap from the MCU to DC for one of the first projects in James Gunn’s new vision for the DC universe of movies and TV series, as he’d been cast to voice Rick Flag Sr. in the animated series ‘Creature Commandos’.

Now, though, he’s taking Rick into live-action territory, as he’ll also play the character in Season 2 of ‘Peacemaker’, which was created by Gunn.

Gunn hit Instagram to announce the news:

‘Peacemaker’ continues the story of Christopher Smith (John Cena), the violent, insecure vigilante who was first brought to cinema screens in Gunn’s 2021 ‘The Suicide Squad’.

The series broadened and –– yes, even deepened –– our understanding of the character, showing his fractured family background and even more neuroses. All the while introducing an alien scheme to take over the world and a group of other characters he interacts with.

For the first season, the show’s cast included Danielle Brooks, Jennifer Holland, Freddie Stroma, Chukwudi Iwuji, Steve Agee, and Robert Patrick. And not forgetting the best of them all –– Peacemaker’s faithful bird pal Eagly (himself), who often helped his friend out of scrapes.

Nothing has been revealed about what the second season will be about, though there were some dangling plot threads.

But with the presence of Flag Sr., we have one very big clue. Because in ‘The Suicide Squad’, Smith was ordered to stop Rick Flag Jr. (Joel Kinnaman) from delivering evidence to the press of the American government’s involvement in an alien conspiracy. He did so by killing him. You’d have to figure that Flag’s dad will come looking for a little vengeance…

Gunn wrote all of Season 1 and it appears he’s also scripted the vast majority of the second season, also. He directed five of that season’s eight-episode run.

And despite already being hard at work on ‘Superman’ (which is in production for an 11th July 2025 release), he’s somehow found time to direct several episodes of the new ‘Peacemaker’ season.

(L to R) Dwayne Johnson in ‘Black Adam’ and Zachary Levi in ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods.’

There are new revelations coming to light about what has been happening behind the scenes of DC movies. But before we go any further, we should specify that there are spoilers ahead for one of the end credits scenes of ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’.

According to various sources, Dwayne Johnson –– star, producer and PR figurehead behind the ‘Black Adam’ movie –– vetoed the appearance of ‘Adam’ characters from the Justice Society of America showing up at the end of the Zachary Levi-starring superhero sequel.

    e5CeRhENprv5jaw1iltuJ1

What was supposed to happen at the end of the ‘Shazam!’ sequel?

Here’s where we get into spoiler territory: in the first of two end credits scenes, Levi’s Shazam was supposed to be approached by Hawkman (Aldis Hodge) and at least one other member of the Justice Society to join their team.

In the final film, it’s actually Agent Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland) and John Economos (Steve Agee) from ‘The Suicide Squad’ and ‘Peacemaker’ who show up to drop word that the Society wants Shazam. It’s a little more confusing, since that pair have nothing to do with the Justice Society, but the swap was necessary when the Rock blocked the original plan.

Director David F. Sandberg offered the first word on the change when talking to The Hollywood Reporter.

    Here’s what Sandberg said,

“There were supposed to be characters from the Justice Society, but that fell apart three days before we were going to roll cameras. So, Peter Safran, who produced this movie and ‘Peacemaker’, made some calls, and thankfully, Jen Holland and Steve Agee were able to come by on very short notice.”

The Wrap has since dug into the matter further, pushing the concept that Johnson was doing everything he could to promote ‘Black Adam’ at ‘Shazam’s cost.

It’s also worth noting that Levi posted the Wrap’s headline to an Instagram story with the caption “The truth shall set you free”.

Johnson, of course, was attached to the role of Black Adam for more than a decade before the movie actually arrived last year. While the original plan had been for the historic Shazam antagonist (who has moved closer to anti-hero status as the years have gone by) to show up as the villain in the first ‘Shazam!’ movie, Johnson pushed for him to get his own film.

And in advance of ‘Black Adam’, he began focusing more on the idea of Adam going up against Superman rather than Shazam, with Henry Cavill (who, when he was still scheduled to return as the character, showing up in a post-credits scene in ‘Black Adam).

Of course, all of that was planned before James Gunn and Peter Safran took over running the DC Studios arm of Warner Bros. Discovery and have largely decided to wipe the slate clean and start over. And it’s worth pointing out, before ‘Black Adam’ underperformed at the box office.

The studio is naturally hoping there will be less of this sort of chaos now that Gunn and Safran are on board and overseeing more of the connections between movies and characters, but time will tell.

  • James Gunn’s ‘Peacemaker’: An Appreciation

John Cena in HBO Max's 'Peacemaker.'
John Cena in HBO Max’s ‘Peacemaker.’

It took a remarkable amount of confidence for writer/director James Gunn to announce a spin-off from ‘The Suicide Squad’ based around John Cena’s Christopher ‘Peacemaker’ Smith, the numbskull vigilante whose entire credo is peace through any means – even if those means are killing anyone or anything he deems necessary.

Peacemaker wasn’t the most popular character on the ‘Squad’ crew, but, played with relish by Cena, he certainly made an impact, and Gunn hinted at more to come when the character survived near certain death.

‘The Suicide Squad’ itself didn’t do that well at the box office, partly due to the pandemic and because of its day-and-date launch on HBO Max. And when Gunn confirmed the series was in the works, plenty of people questioned the need for a show based around the character.

How wrong they were. As it turns out, ‘Peacemaker’ is one of the more satisfying series of the year so far, and streets ahead of even some of the recent Marvel and Lucasfilm offerings.

Picking up as Smith is released from hospital, the show sees him thrown into a new mission, this time dealing with a threat from alien bug creatures that have taken over humans for their own ends.

Peacemaker is – somewhat unwillingly – teamed up with Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland) and John Economos (Steve Agee), who we met in more headquarters-bound form in ‘The Suicide Squad’. This squad is led by Clemson Murn (Chukwudi Iwuji), a special forces operative who has little time for interaction with his team. And then there’s the new recruit, Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks), who seems completely unprepared for the task in hand, but has a secret – she’s the daughter of ‘Squad’s Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), and a hidden agenda.

Tagging along are two of Peacemaker’s friends – pet and best pal Eagly (a fantastic CGI creation who has all the personality and humour you’d expect from a James Gunn project, even if he can’t talk) and Vigilante (Freddie Stroma), a cheery sociopath who enjoys killing people if he thinks it serves justice… Or just because.

This team, which redefines the term “rag-tag” must investigate and stop extra-terrestrials nicknamed “Butterflies” that have their own plans for humanity. Oh, and then there’s Christopher’s father, Auggie Smith (a foul-mouthed Robert Patrick), who is a racist, scheming White Supremacist who constantly belittles his son. These various sides will come into serious conflict – and not everyone will make it out alive…

‘Peacemaker’ works so well because Gunn has been given free rein to indulge his creative side, pushing the boundaries of what is acceptable on a superhero show, or indeed any TV series.

But far from simply being vulgar, bloody, and violent, the show is a potent combination of everything Gunn does so well. The humor and action are both excellent, but secondary to character growth. Every single member of the cast gets moments to shine – this is not simply Smith’s show. And everyone enjoys a complete character arc that finds them evolve and grow as the plot trundles along.

Gunn said when the show was originally revealed that he was looking to dig under Peacemaker’s helmet to find the man beneath, in a way that isn’t possible in a movie. And he certainly lived up to that claim – with Cena throwing himself into the role (literally, on occasion), Christopher Smith proves to be a far more complex person than the slaughter-happy idiot we meet in the ‘Squad’ movie.

He’s burdened by serious daddy issues thanks to Auggie’s toxic parenting, and still haunted by accidentally killing his brother (again, really his father’s fault). He starts to realize that his bullying, smug attitude is drawn from this background and begins to figure out how to be a better person.

Murn is a tough nut to crack, but Iwuji gives him layers, particularly later, and obviously left an impact on Gunn, who cast him in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.’ Brooks, best known to date for Netflix’s ‘Orange is the New Black’ shines as Adebayo, thrust into a world she’s (mostly) unprepared to handle, she figures out her place on the team and bonds with Smith over their shared parental problems.

Holland’s casting was controversial since she dates Gunn in real life, but anyone trying to cry nepotism need to take a long, hard look at themselves – freed from the confines of her ‘Squad’ duty, Holland really works as Harcourt, letting her initially chilly side melt as she interacts with her colleagues. Similarly, Agee is handed plenty to do than simply play a nervous nerd behind a computer, coming into his own heroic side with occasionally violent results.

Stroma, meanwhile, doesn’t see his character change all that much, but that’s because Vigilante (real name: Adrian Chase) is so entertaining as a clueless goofball that to alter him might upset what makes the man work. Yet he also has a great arc that finds him drawing closer to the rest of the gang.

And then there’s Eagly, who is both a comedic gem and the beating heart that keeps Peacemaker grounded (even as he flies).

Yet the character work also extends to the supporting cast – Annie Chang’s endlessly miffed cop Sophie Song has a great line in insults, particularly for Auggie, and she’s backed up by gung-ho partner Fitzgibbon (played with a sweet nature by Lochlyn Munro). And when we finally meet the leader of the alien threat, they’re not simply a scheming, mustache-twirling villain (partly because they don’t have a mustache).

Along the way, there is so much to enjoy – hilariously rude riffs on other superheroes (Peacemaker has some seriously warped ideas on their behavior), some weird enemies (Christopher Heyerdahl as Police Captain Locke is a strange fellow even before he gets taken over by one of the alien bugs, and the performance clearly delighted his director, as he features in several extended moments) and some fun with rock and metal music. Oh, and seemingly in a dig at Marvel’s obsession with setting up other stories and characters, ‘Peacemaker’s end credit sequences only serve to add more jokes.

The path to the finale is a rollicking ride that never forgets to also have heart, and the last episode sticks the landing, with a couple of gigantic cameos that don’t feel out of place. Gunn skillfully weaves jokes and character touches into the story, and everything pays off at the end.

Though the first season ends with the threat largely vanquished and everyone in a very different place to where they started, the possibilities are endless for this series. Gunn wrote the entire first run and shared directing duties with Brad Anderson, Jody Hill, and Rosemary Rodriguez, but plans to handle it all for season 2.

If I were to guess as to what might happen? Peacemaker will continue his journey to become a better person (while still finding time to rock). Harcourt will become more of a leader. Adebayo will find more time for her wife (Keeya played by Elizabeth Faith Ludlow), and Eagly will continue to be the bright, shiny star of the series.

The entire series is now available on HBO Max. Be sure to watch the finale, as it features surprise cameos from several other popular DC Characters!
