This ‘Dark Phoenix’ International Poster Is a Retro Comic Throwback

    20th Century Fox

The “Dark Phoenix” will be rising next summer when the “X-Men” character — who emerges from Jean Grey, played by Sophie Turner — gets her own spinoff. And a new international poster for the flick is giving fans a huge nod to the heroine’s comic book roots.

The one-sheet was produced for Comic Con Brazil (also known as Comic Con Experience, or CCXP) to promote the cast and crew’s upcoming panel there, and looks like it could easily have been the cover on one of the character’s first comics from the 1980s.

In the image, Jean is front and center, flanked by both Professor X (James McAvoy) and Magneto (Michael Fassbender), and she looks ready to unleash all kinds of chaos. That’s precisely what is set to happen in “Dark Phoenix,” as Jean begins to spiral out of control while trying to wield new, dangerous powers — which also make her irresistible to outside forces, who want to harness those powers to take over the universe.

That’s a decidedly “X-Men”-style storyline, and that’s why this poster is especially cool: There’s no mistaking that this is promoting a comics-inspired film. (Unlike, say, the photo at the top of this post, which looks like it could have been pulled from the press tour for Turner’s costar Jennifer Lawrence’s “Hunger Games” films.)

“Dark Phoenix” is set to spark in theaters on June 7, 2019.

  • Bryan Singer Reveals How Quicksilver Steals the Movie (Again) in ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’

[SPOILER ALERT! If you haven’t seen the movie, stop reading now.]

Another “X-Men” movie, another chance for Quicksilver to steal the show.

Director Bryan Singer returns with his biggest X-Men movie yet, “X-Men: Apocalypse,” and he has brought “Days of Future Past‘s” Quicksilver (Evan Peters) with him. The speedster became an instant fan-favorite last time with his slow-mo running sequence through a Pentagon kitchen near Magneto’s cell. In “Apocalypse,” the action gets next level’d with a daring rescue through the X-Mansion as it is (naturally) blowing up.

At a recent press junket for the film, Singer revealed how he and his production team put this scene together — an all-timer for the franchise.
“It took a month-and-a-half to shoot two mins of film,” Singer said about the intricate shoot. “Evan Peters worked 17 days, doing most of his own wire work.”

An extensive amount of pre-viz also went into the sequence obviously, as it employed “every type of special effects you can imagine — from CGI to explosive algorithms.”

Several practical physical effects were used as well — including ol’ fashioned explosions.

“What we did when we were done shooting in all the physical locations is, we blew them all up,” Singer grinned. “And [we] had Phantom cameras that run at 3000 FPS, fly in blast cases through the sets at 80 MPH — simultaneously with the explosion. So, when you look at the footage, you can actually read pages of a flaming book moving past the screen, and you can just read the words [on it] — and we just put all those elements together and crafted a scene that had to rival the one in the previous movie.”

Blame H.G. Wells for inspiring Singer on how to, visually, bring Quicksilver’s super speed to life.

“It was all born out of a short story I read when I was kid called ‘The Great Accelerator,’ by H.G. Wells, and it’s a story of a person who takes a potion that allows them to move so fast everything else seems like it’s standing still. And I’ve always wanted to put that on film, and the kitchen scene in ‘DOFP’ allowed me that opportunity, and Apocalypse allowed me to take it to the next level.”

“X-Men: Apocalypse” is in theaters now.

  • Taylor Swift May Cameo as Dazzler in ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’

x-men, apocalypse, dazzler, taylor swift, cameo, x-men: apocalypse, sophie turner, tye sheridan, jean grey, cyclopsMutants like music, too, and one of the most famous singers in the “X-Men” orbit is Dazzler, who just so happens to be a mutant herself. Now, the musician is set to make a small cameo in “X-Men: Apocalypse,” and it seems that a real-life famous singer will be playing her.

Taylor Swift is the number one candidate for the job, after internet sleuths noticed a clue from actress Sophie Turner, who plays the young Jean Grey in the flick. Turner posted a new still from the film on her Twitter account, in which she and Cyclops (Tye Sheridan) are rifling through albums at a record store, and Cyclops discovers one from Dazzler.

Turner noted that the pair “found our favorite singer’s album (pre 1989, of course),” and, of course, as any pop music fan can tell you, that 1989 hint sure seems like a direct reference to Swift’s latest album. But could she really be playing Dazzler, or is this just some clever misdirection on Turner’s part?

The folks over at Collider actually pieced together this theory months ago, back in July of 2015, when “Apocalypse” was still in production in Montreal. Screenwriter and producer Simon Kinberg posted a photo of himself alongside cast members James McAvoy and Turner — and none other than Swift herself. At the time, it seemed like it may just be pure coincidence that Swift visited the set; now, with Turner’s clue, it seems all but a given that she’s in the flick.

It’s hard to tell anything from the photo itself, since the album sleeve is so small, but examine it for yourself above and see if you can detect any of Swift’s features. Keep your eye out for her on the big screen when “X-Men: Apocalypse” opens on May 27.

  • This First Look at Jubilee & Jean Grey in ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ Is ’80s Perfection

    Jubliee, Jean Grey, X-Men: Apocalypse
It looks like director Bryan Singer is taking the 1980s setting of “X-Men: Apocalypse” seriously, based on a new behind-the-scenes photo of two new mutants.

On Thursday, Singer shared a snap of actresses Lana Condor and Sophie Turner on set, looking every bit the ’80s part: they sport high-waisted jeans, neon, exaggerated shoulders, and of course, wacky, overly-teased hairdos. Condor and Turner, who play Jubilee and Jean Grey, respectively, were apparently shooting a scene at an arcade on what Singer said was their second day of filming.

Based on this photo alone, it looks like audiences are in for a winkingly-retro treat, much in the same way that “X-Men: Days of Future Past” embraced its 1970s setting. The rest of the cast includes “X-Men” regulars Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Nicholas Hoult, Rose Byrne, Evan Peters, and Lucas Till, and newcomers Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee Ben Hardy, Tye Sheridan, Olivia Munn, and Oscar Isaac.

“X-Men: Apocalypse” is due in theaters on May 27, 2016.
