    George Wendt: Early Life

Born in October Chicago 1948 and raised on the South Side, George Robert Wendt Jr. was one of nine kids.

His father owned a real estate agency that his dad had founded, and his mother, Loretta, was a housewife and longtime volunteer and fundraiser for Little Company of Mary Hospital.

Wendt attended Campion High School, a Jesuit boarding school for boys in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, and then Notre Dame — until he was expelled as a junior.

This is what he told David Letterman about it in 1990:

“I was a very poor student. I got kicked out of Notre Dame. I’m very proud to mention my grade-point average that got me booted out: zero-point-zero-zero. I just hung out and didn’t go to classes.”

For a time, Wendt worked for his father, excelling in “getting coffee for the secretaries,” before earning a B.A. in economics in 1971 from another Jesuit school, Rockhurst College in Kansas City, Missouri. But then he hung out in Europe for the better part of three years.

For Wendt, his true calling was in performing: he got his start in the 1970s with Second City, the famed improvisational comedy troupe that was based in his hometown.

Following his success, he popped up on ‘Saturday Night Live’ as Bob Swerski, one of the “superfans” who gathered at Coach Mike Ditka’s restaurant in the Windy City to watch “Da Bears.”

Small roles in movies such as ‘My Bodyguard’ and ‘Somewhere in Time’ helped get him on screen, but it was on TV where he truly shined.

There is only one place to start when it comes to Wendt’s small screen legacy: ‘Cheers.’

Following a small role as an exterminator on ‘Taxi’ –– created and run by the team who would then bring ‘Cheers’ to screens –– his guy-next-door persona and easy, charismatic delivery won him appreciation from fans and castmates as he played the lovable lug Norm, an accountant by trade, on every installment the sitcom during its 1982-93 run.

He received Emmy nominations for outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series for six consecutive years.

This is what he told The Washington Post about the day-to-day work of filming and the downside to his barfly role:

“There I was slamming those down for a whole day. It not only tastes disgusting, I was afraid of keeling over from high blood pressure. Then I got the knack. I didn’t have to put all those brews away. It only mattered when the camera was pointing my way. It took a couple of years, but now I watch the camera. That’s how I make my money. That’s acting.”

Norm became a pop culture favorite, and Wendt showed up as the character over the years on ‘St. Elsewhere,’ ‘Wings,’ ‘The Simpsons,’ ‘Family Guy,’ and Cheers’ spin-offs ‘Frasier’ and ‘The Tortellis.’

When ‘Cheers’ ended its run, NBC considered a spinoff featuring Wendt and Ratzenberger as bar buddies, but the show never materialized. Instead, he starred for CBS in 1995 in ‘The George Wendt Show,’ playing the co-owner of a Wisconsin garage and co-host of a call-in radio show about car repair, but the comedy lasted just six episodes.

Aside from his live action appearances, he had roles in several more TV series including ‘Columbo,’ ‘Becker,’ ‘Outside Providence,’ and appeared as himself on ‘Seinfeld.’

While Wendt’s film career was much less full than his busy TV appearances, he had a few notable roles.

His movies included ‘Dreamscape’, ‘House,’ ‘Fletch,’ ‘Gung Ho,’  ‘Guilty by Suspicion,’ ‘Forever Young’ and ‘Spice World.’

Wendt is survived by his wife, actress Bernadette Birkett, whom he married in July 1978 — they met at Second City, and she was the unseen, offscreen voice of Norm’s wife, Vera, on ‘Cheers’ — his children, Hilary, Joe and Daniel and his stepchildren, Joshua and Andrew.

And, on a note of trivia: nephew (and ‘Ted Lasso’ co-creator/star) Jason Sudeikis, who is the son of one of Wendt’s sisters.

This is how National Comedy Center Executive Director Journey Gunderson summed him up in a statement:

“From his early days with The Second City to his iconic role as Norm on Cheers, George Wendt’s work showcased how comedy can create indelible characters that feel like family. His work is proudly featured in the National Comedy Center, and we honor his legacy and the joy he brought to generations of fans.”

  • Full Trailer for ‘Ted Lasso’ Season 3

    XXlc7ws0

It has been a little over a month since the teaser arrived for ‘Ted Lasso’ Season 3. And with the season due to debut in less than a month, it’s time for the full trailer to land.

And while not a whole lot of plot is given away here, we do see some of the soccer action at AFC Richmond and plenty of bonding between the main team. And there are glimpses of Nate (Nick Mohammed), Ted’s prodigy-turned-rival settling into life as manager of opposing team West Ham. See more of the story below…

Nick Mohammed and Jason Sudeikis in 'Ted Lasso,' season 3 coming soon to Apple TV+.
(L to R) Nick Mohammed and Jason Sudeikis in ‘Ted Lasso,’ season 3 coming soon to Apple TV+.

What’s the story of Ted Lasso?

‘Ted Lasso’, which stars Jason Sudeikis, Brendan Hunt, Brett Goldstein and Hannah Waddingham, follows Sudeikis’ title character, an American football coach hired to manage a British soccer team—despite having no experience. But what he lacks in knowledge, he makes up for with optimism, underdog determination… and biscuits (by which they mean cookies).

The show has demonstrated an admirable commitment to balancing comedy and drama; despite Ted’s perennially sunny disposition, he’s also dealing with anxiety issues and faces problems from within and without the team. From the looks of the official synopsis, that’s set to continue in the new season.

In the 12-episode third season of ‘Ted Lasso’, the newly promoted AFC Richmond faces ridicule as media predictions widely peg them as last in the Premier League and Nate now hailed as the “wonder kid,” has gone to work for Rupert (Anthony Head) at West Ham United. In the wake of Nate’s contentious departure from Richmond, Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein) steps up as assistant coach, alongside Coach Beard (Hunt).

Meanwhile, while Ted deals with pressures at work, he continues to wrestle with his own personal issues back home, Rebecca (Waddingham) is focused on defeating Rupert and Keeley (Juno Temple) navigates being the boss of her own PR agency. Things seem to be falling apart both on and off the pitch, but Team Lasso is set to give it their best shot anyway.

Who else is involved in ‘Ted Lasso’?

Ted Lasso was co-created by Sudeikis, Joe Kelly, Hunt and TV sitcom veteran Bill Lawrence (who brought the world shows such as ‘Spin City’ and ‘Scrubs’). Goldstein, in addition to starring as Roy, is also among the writing staff alongside Phoebe Walsh, Jane Becker, Bill Wrubel and Sasha Garron.

The cast also includes Jeremy Swift, Phil Dunster, Toheeb Jimoh, Cristo Fernandez, Kola Bokinni, Billy Harris and James Lance.

Will Ted Lasso end with Season 3?

There has been much speculation as to when ‘Ted Lasso’ will come to an end. Sudeikis has said that he always envisioned a definite three-act structure and end to the show and while no-one has stated specifically that Season 3 will wrap up the story, it’s looking increasingly likely as though this will be it for the series.

Brett Goldstein had this to say about the end of the series to The Sunday Times:

“I love all of these characters and want it to end well, but Jason has a very clear vision and always has. No one is phoning it.”

We know that fans will want it to continue, and Apple TV+ is certainly not hoping that one of its most popular shows is going away any time soon. But there’s also value in not stretching the show out beyond its popular period.

‘Ted Lasso’ Season 3 kicks off on Apple TV+ with the first episode on Wednesday March 15th. New episodes will debut weekly.

Who else is involved in ‘Ted Lasso’?

Ted Lasso was co-created by Sudeikis, Joe Kelly, Hunt and TV sitcom veteran Bill Lawrence (who brought the world shows such as ‘Spin City’ and ‘Scrubs’), based on the commercials that Sudeikis and Hunt worked on for NBC’s Premier League soccer coverage in 2013.

The cast also includes Jeremy Swift, Phil Dunster, Toheeb Jimoh, Cristo Fernandez, Kola Bokinni, Billy Harris and James Lance.

In addition to it multiple Emmy wins, it has also snagged SAG Awards and Critics Choice Awards.

And while Sudeikis and co have remained quiet on whether it’ll continue after Season 3, all signs are pointing to the creators planning three seasons and stopping the show while it is still hugely popular.

  • Netflix’s ‘Kodachrome’ Trailer Sends Jason Sudeikis, Ed Harris on Bonding Road Trip

No better way to solve daddy issues than a road trip.

In the first trailer for the Netflix movie “Kodachrome,” Jason Sudeikis plays a struggling record label executive who reluctantly goes on a road trip with his estranged dying father (Ed Harris) so the latter, a noted photographer, can develop some old film in the last remaining lab that can develop Kodachrome.

The trip brings out all the complicated, prickly history between the two, and along for the ride is the dad’s caretaker (Elizabeth Olsen).

As Netflix describes it, it’s “the story of three damaged people coming to terms with themselves, each other, and a world swiftly changing from analog to digital.”

There’s a heavy emphasis on music, not surprising since Sudeikis’ character is in the music industry. And since he has to find a hot new band to avoid being fired, he and his companions check out some live music, which is balanced by licensed songs on the soundtrack (however, Paul Simon’s “Kodachrome” is not included).

“Kodachrome” begins streaming April 20 on Netflix.

  • Olivia Wilde and Jason Sudeikis Welcome Daughter Daisy

88th Annual Academy Awards - ArrivalsOlivia Wilde and fiance Jason Sudeikis are parents again, welcoming their second child, a daughter, earlier this month.

Wilde unveiled the couple’s newest bundle of joy on Instagram over the weekend, sharing a sweet snap of the slumbering newborn and revealing the little girl’s name and birth date.

There goes the neighborhood. Daisy Josephine Sudeikis. Born, like a boss, on #internationaldayofthegirl. ❤️

A photo posted by Olivia Wilde (@oliviawilde) on

“There goes the neighborhood,” Wilde captioned the post, adding that the couple named their daughter Daisy Josephine Sudeikis. The actress also noted that Daisy was “Born, like a boss, on #internationaldayofthegirl.” International Day of the Girl Child is a UN-sponsored girls’ rights awareness campaign celebration, which this year fell on Tuesday, October 11.

Daisy joins big brother Otis Alexander, 2, who was born back in April 2014. Wilde, 32, and Sudeikis, 41, have been engaged since 2013. The pair began dating in 2011.

Wilde first revealed that she was expecting again in another Instagram post, which she shared back in April, featuring her and Otis comparing their “matching baby bumps.” She later shared the news that she would be having a girl in a Twitter post from September.

Congrats to the new family of four!

  • Is ‘Sleeping With Other People’ Worth Committing to In Theaters? Critics Decide!

If rom-com-of -the-year is what you are after, it doesn’t sound like “Sleeping with Other People” is going to be that stand-out flick – but if you’re seeking a light piece of sexy entertainment, then it is likely you won’t be disappointed with the movie that hits theaters on Friday.

Director Leslye Headland’s Sundance-debuted film about two serial cheaters (Jason Sudeikis and Alison Brie) who develop feelings for one another is praised by some critics for its wit and panned by others for being a bit too all over the place. Rotten Tomatoes gave it an overall rating of 52 percent.

“‘Sleeping with Other People,’ described by its own writer-director Leslye Headland as ‘When Harry Met Sally for A–holes,’ is so deeply in debt to its predecessor that it’s a near-remake. Which could be awful, except Headland’s script is so hilarious, so full of achingly well-observed one-liners on sex and relationships and parenting, that it qualifies as a sparkling new rethink of a beloved film we’ve all seen too many times. I didn’t enjoy some of the early scenes; it’s distracting to watch Jason Sudeikis and Alison Brie (especially the former) pass for Columbia students who lose their virginity to each other in a strange meet-cute …” — Kyle Smith, NYPost.com

“There might have been a worthy romantic comedy within this mess, but Headland pursues the currently fashionable penchant for raunch at the expense of her characters and not as a means of revealing them as [Amy] Schumer did in [‘Trainwreck’]. None of the action, comic or otherwise, comes off as believable but rather a search for laughs by a filmmaker unsure of what she wants to do with her material. Thus the tone shifts from scene to scene or even within scenes and the characters are unsure even of what they wish to be insincere about.” — Kirk Honeycutt, HoneycuttsHollywood.com

“It’s silly and funny and charming in a way you’d absolutely expect from its stellar comedic cast, but ultimately Jason Sudeikis fingering an empty bottle of green tea just isn’t enough to dig the film out of its corny rom-com grave … Looking a little out of place in every film festival its visited, ‘Sleeping With Other People’ was described best by Variety as ‘too broad for the arthouse and too small for the multiplex’ — diving in and out of sincerity and sap, it seems really unsure of what it wants to do.” — Meg Watson, TheJunkee.com

  • Jason Sudeikis Relives the Day He and His Father Had ’The Talk’

In a convoluted way, Jason Sudeikis can attribute some of his sexual education to Cuba Gooding Jr.

The star of “Sleeping With Other People” told James Corden on “The Late Late Show” on Wednesday that when he was a high school sophomore, his father decided to have a serious discussion during the drive to school.

“I had already been sexually active, but he had just watched ‘Boyz In The Hood,’ and Lawrence Fishburne’s character, Furious Styles, gives Cuba Gooding Jr.’s character ‘the talk,’” he recalls. “My dad started off, so I was watching ‘Boyz In The Hood’ last night, which is pretty great to have a Kansas dad say to you. I said ‘What did you think dad?’”

Sudeikis remembers his dad saying, “I want you to know that I have protection on my closet, and the whole time in my head I’m like, ‘You used to.’”

“I was very respectful,” he said of the moment, but added that it was “awkward as hell.”
