In theaters on April 24 is ‘Over Your Dead Body’, an adaptation of a dark Norwegian comedy that stars Jason Segel (‘Shrinking’) and Samara Weaving (‘Ready or Not 2: Here I Come’) as a couple who have deadly plans for each other.

Marriages where the passion has long cooled have been a fertile source for bloody comedies in the past, including ‘The War of the Roses’ (remade recently as ‘The Roses’) into that genre steps ‘Over Your Dead Body’, which boasts the comic stylings of Jason Segel and the comedy/action chops of Samara Weaving. But does it deliver?

    Script and Direction

Adapted from the Norwegian film ‘The Trip’ (which was co-written and directed by Tommy Wirkola), the new movie features a script from Nick Kocher (‘Pizza Movie’) and Brian McElhaney (‘Plus One’) that sets up the bad romance between Segel and Weaving’s characters before throwing all manner of comically violent twists in. It doesn’t always work, but when it hits, it hits hard.

Jorma Taccone, the Lonely Island co-founder, shows a knack for staging violent set pieces here, and keeps the movie feeling fun.

Segel and Weaving are excellent as the central pair, but kudos also to Timothy Olyphant, Juliette Lewis and Keith Jardine, who all give committed, loopy performances.

If you watch one action comedy this year where Samara Weaving regrets her choices and fights for her life, make it ‘Ready or Not 2: Here I Come’. But if you’ve room for two, then ‘Over Your Dead Body’ has plenty to offer.

Moviefone: To begin with, can you talk about your first reaction to the screenplay and the challenges of remaking ‘The Trip’?

Jorma Taccone: Well, this is based on a Norwegian movie called ‘The Trip’, originally called ‘In Bad Days’ by Tommy Wirkola, and it’s a very funny movie. Tommy did movies like ‘Violent Night’. I was really a big fan of all his stuff. He’s more of an action-comedy guy. I’m more of a comedy-action guy. So, there’s a Venn diagram there. The original movie is very dark. It’s angry but it’s very funny too. I was very interested in, one, what a different cast would bring to it. There are some pretty big changes that have happened with our bad guys. When I read the original script, I was really impressed that Nick (Kocher) and Brian (McElhaney), who are very funny writers, had captured the tone that I really wanted to present, which is the characters being a bit more redeemable and really trying to earn the ending of the movie. It’s a series of tricks that this movie is doing of threading all these different needles. It’s like three movies in one. It’s this suspense/thriller, into almost a home invasion, into an action movie and it just ramps. So, it was pushing the comedy, which is obviously my heart, not wanting to break anything and having the reality of the world. But really doing all those tones, having all these twists and turns, and having the comedy stitch it all together in this way that felt like such an awesome challenge. Showing different shades of things that maybe people don’t expect from me.

MF: Can you talk about your approach to filming the action sequences?

JT: I mean, there’s a lot of cool set pieces in this movie. With the days that you have and the time that you have, it’s always challenging to get. A half a page of action lines can take a full day to shoot. So, it’s always like that. There’s a whole action set piece that goes all around the front yard and there’s brutal stuff that happens. There are maybe ten different gags that happen that are just really over the top violent and it’s so fun. It’s also funny and disturbing. So, that was a fun one to block and choreograph with 87North Productions, who are known for ‘Bullet Train’, ‘Atomic Blonde’, ‘John Wick’. So, I had the best stunt team on the planet. Then I’m also weaving all my dumb comedy into it as well. So, it was those moments that you’re just like, “This is so fun to have so many different things going on in one scene.”

MF: Can you talk about the music you used in the film?

JT: I’m obsessed with audio. There’s all these EDM songs that are in the movie that I got Karen Gillan to do. So, she did this song, and Samara Weaving does a song. But if there is chaos, there’s even more chaos with audio and there’s this crazy song happening. So, it was fun to build all that stuff up.

MF: Finally, what was it like putting this cast together and working with them on set?

JT: Well, one of the things I’ve been saying, which I think holds very true, is that my wife (director Marielle Heller) was saying that there’s a head of every department and there’s always a head of the acting department. Jason Siegel was absolutely that for me. He was the hub of the wheel that we first got. Then to get Samara who works so well with him, and she’s so funny in this movie. She’s playing an Australian too, which was great for her improv to just be able to go toe to toe with Jason. There’s so much fun between them. But then Timothy Olyphant, who was difficult to convince, but I did it. Then him and Juliette are so funny. Then, Keith Jardine, who is mostly known for MMA fighting, but he’s been in a ton of stuff. He’s the sweetest man on the planet and he’s so funny in this. Then, Paul Guilfoyle, who’s unbelievable as this dad character. So, I got incredibly lucky. But Jason was the start of that, of the ball rolling towards this incredible cast.

Jason Segel and Harrison Ford in ‘Shrinking’ Season 3, premiering January 28, 2026 on Apple TV.

Arriving on Apple TV on January 28 with its first new episode (followed by one episode weekly) is the third season of ‘Shrinking,’ starring (and co-created by Jason Segel (‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall’).

    ON4nyOkhez4R8sZzMON3

The cast for the show also includes Harrison Ford (‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’), Christa Miller (‘Scrubs’), Lukita Maxwell (‘Afraid’), Jessica Williams (‘Booksmart’), Ted McGinley (‘Silent Thunder’) and Michael Urie (‘Ugly Betty’).

In keeping with other shows co-created by Bill Lawrence (‘Spin City’), ‘Shrinking’ has long since evolved from a focus on Jason Segel and Harrison Ford’s therapist characters to embrace a wider circle of friends and relations.

The third season keeps that idea and feeling intact, and also maintains the entertainingly loose comedy atmosphere while also delivering the occasional emotional gut punch.

Lawrence, Segel and co-creator Brett Goldstein (‘Ted Lasso’) lead the writing team down some familiar paths here, but that doesn’t stop the show from still being a successful, warm, easy watch.

There’s rarely much that is truly challenging here (though some topics, such as Parkinson’s and grief are still explored), but the vibe really is a group of characters you’re happy to spend time with.

In terms of directors, the likes of Zach Braff (‘Garden State’) and James Ponsoldt (‘The Spectacular Now’)  keep the visuals calm and easy, letting the performances do the heavy lifting here.

The core ensemble remains excellent, funny and heartfelt as they follow their various paths.

But it’s in the new additions that we find some real fun –– Michael J. Fox shines as a Parkinson’s patient who interacts with Ford, while Sherry Cola is great as one of Gabby’s new therapy clients who is reticent to open up.

The new season doesn’t exactly break massive new ground, but with a show like ‘Shrinking,’ you neither expect or want that.

What it does do is offer more chances for the characters to interact in fun, warm ways.

  • Apple TV+’s ‘Shrinking’ Interview: Jason Segel

Premiering on Apple TV+ on January 27th is the new comedy series ‘Shrinking’ from creators Brett Goldstein (‘Ted Lasso’), Bill Lawrence (‘Scrubs’) and Jason Segel (‘The Muppets’).

The series stars Segel as Jimmy Laird, a therapist who is dealing with severe grief from the recent death of his wife. While raising his teenage daughter Alice (Lukita Maxwell),

Jimmy begins to breach ethical barriers at work by telling his patients exactly what he thinks, resulting in massive changes to his and their lives, as well as the lives of his co-workers Gaby (Jessica Williams) and Dr. Paul Rhodes (Harrison Ford).

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Jason Segel about his work on ‘Shrinking,’ creating the series with Brett Goldstein and Bill Lawrence, Jimmy’s new found therapy style, how it affects his colleagues, his relationship with his daughter, and working with Harrison Ford.

You can read our full interview below or click on the video player above to watch our interviews with Segel, Brett Goldstein and Neil Goldman, Bill Lawrence, Jessica Williams, Christa Miller, and Lukita Maxwell about ‘Shrinking.’

Moviefone: To begin with, can you talk creating the series with Brett Goldstein and Bill Lawrence, and having the idea to set it in the world of therapy?

Jason Segel: Well, I must admit, I got very lucky. I had Bill Lawrence and Brett Goldstein come pitch me a pretty fully formed idea, and it was this show. I thought it sounded brilliant, and so I signed on very early and then brought whatever my secret sauce is to the table. But these guys had a really brilliant idea, which is somebody going through a nervous breakdown continuing to practice therapy.

MF: Jimmy’s personal life is falling apart and that begins to affect his work until he discovers a new way of doing therapy, can you talk about that?

JS: I think that there is a really magical element to rock bottom, which is that you’ve got nothing left to lose. The only place to go is up, and so it seems like a really pitiful position, but in a lot of ways it’s enviable. It’s only going up from here. So, you are watching a guy scramble his way out of rock bottom and trying to bring his patients with him because he recognizes that, it seems like we’re all stuck, and let’s get out of this mess.

MF: Jimmy and his colleagues are all therapists with their own patients, but they act as therapists for each other as well. Can you talk about the relationships between Jimmy, Gaby, and Dr. Rhodes?

JS: Isn’t that the truth of life though? As you get older and learn to communicate better, we’re all each other’s kind of defacto therapists, right? But yes, me, Jessica Williams and Harrison Ford all work in a therapy office together. How crazy is that? And we have a lot of scenes of us therapizing each other, which are really fun.

MF: Harrison Ford is very funny in this series, and he hasn’t done a lot of comedy in the past. What was it like for you working with him and did you have any idea that he would be that funny?

JS: We underestimated how funny Harrison Ford was. We thought that the way that we would write Harrison Ford is kind of what you’d expect, that he would be the gruff straight man while we did comedy around him. But Harrison Ford is funny! He’s like a comedy savant. Wait until you see as these episodes go on. It just goes to show you how we all are limited by our own imaginations, but this guy knew what he was capable of doing and wanted to show it off.

MF: Finally, can you talk about Jimmy’s relationship with his daughter Alice, and how he’s trying to put the pieces of that relationship back together?

JS: It’s one of the primary storylines of this series. Jimmy, my character, has lost his wife in an accident, and in his spiral downward, this parental daughter relationship has flipped to where she is taking care of me now, and it is this slow road back. That to me is one of the main elements of the show, my character becoming an adequate father again.

  • First Teaser for Apple TV+ Comedy Series ‘Shrinking’

    bDF7znxz

Though you might think that team ‘Ted Lasso’ would be busy wrapping up the beloved soccer comedy (it recently finished shooting the third––and likely final (sob!)–– season in England), some of those involved in that Apple TV+ favorite have also been spending their time working on something else.

That something is ‘Shrinking’, a new comedy drama series co-created by and starring Jason Segel and some newcomer called (checks notes)… Harrison Ford?

Yes, the cinematic icon is indeed making a rare foray into TV for the show, which continues Apple’s apparent obsession with having as many shows as possible start with the letter “s” (‘Severance’, ‘Servant’, ‘Slow Horses’ and ‘Shantaram’ to name but four).

Bill Lawrence, the TV supremo who backed ‘Lasso’ (and helped develop it with stars Jason Sudeikis and Brendan Hunt) here worked in a similar capacity alongside Segel and ‘Lasso’ writing/performing stalwart Brett Goldstein.

Jason Segel as Jimmy Johns, and Harrison Ford as Dr. Phil Rhodes in Apple TV+ series 'Shrinking.'
(L to R) Jason Segel as Jimmy Johns, and Harrison Ford as Dr. Phil Rhodes in Apple TV+’s series ‘Shrinking.’

Unlike with ‘Ted Lasso’s gruff Roy Kent, Goldstein doesn’t appear to be in front of the camera this time too, but the cast is full of talent including Jessica Williams, Michael Urie, Luke Tennie, Christa Miller, Tilky Jones, Lukita Maxwell, Rosslyn Luke and Matt Knudsen.

Directors for this one have included James Ponsoldt and Lawrence’s old ‘Scrubs’ star Zach Braff, who has overseen several episodes of the producer’s shows in the past.

The teaser tells us almost nothing about the show, since it doesn’t feature actual footage, just shots of Segel, Williams and some of the other cast jumping on a mini trampoline while captions let us know that sometimes you need to have a breakdown to have a breakthrough.

And no, the team behind the series sensibly does not have the 80-year-old star of ‘Star Wars’ and the ‘Indiana Jones’ franchise leaping into the air, both for safety and dignity’s sake. (Though we suppose they could have employed one of his stunt/photo doubles used in the latest Indy outing).

Harrison Ford as Dr. Phil Rhodes in Apple TV+’s series ‘Shrinking.’

Here’s what we know story-wise so far, via the official synopsis: ‘Shrinking’ follows a grieving therapist (Segel) who starts to break the rules and tell his clients exactly what he thinks. Ignoring his training and ethics, he finds himself making huge, tumultuous changes to people’s lives… including his own. So, there you have it.

We do at least know who Ford is playing, as character details were released when his casting was announced: He’s Dr. Phil Rhodes, a down-to earth, sharp as a tack “blue collar shrink,” blunt but with an ever present twinkle.

Phil is a pioneer in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy who has built a successful practice over the years that he shares with his two young proteges, Jimmy and Gaby. Fiercely independent, Phil has recently been diagnosed with Parkinson’s, which forces him out of his comfort zone as he grapples with intrusive friends, his estranged family and his legacy.

The first two episodes of ‘Shrinking’ will premiere on Apple TV+ on Friday, January 27th, followed by one of the remaining eight episodes weekly.

We’re much more used to Harrison Ford on the big screen in the likes of the ‘Indiana Jones’ and ‘Star Wars’ movies. Yet he’s now preparing to work on his first TV series regular role.

Ford has agreed to star in ‘Shrinking,’ a new Apple TV+ comedy series that stars ‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall’s Jason Segel, who also co-created and co-writes the show.

The 10-episode series will see Segel as a grieving therapist who starts to break the rules and tell his clients exactly what he thinks. Ignoring his training and ethics, he finds himself making huge, tumultuous changes to people’s lives… including his own.

As for Ford, he’ll play Dr. Phil Rhodes, a down-to earth, sharp-as-a-tack “blue-collar shrink,” blunt but with an ever-present twinkle.

This marks the latest show to come from the prodigious Bill Lawrence, who has been enjoying big success thanks to ‘Ted Lasso’, which is also produced by Apple. He has several series in production or development, but an executive producer on this one alongside ‘Lasso’ writer/actor Brett Goldstein (most recognizable as the perma-scowling Roy Kent from the soccer comedy).

‘Shrinking’ is coming together quickly and should be in production this year.

    Jason Segel on red carpet
Jason Segel at the Los Angeles premiere of Netflix’s ‘Windfall.’

Next up in movie terms for Ford is the slightly anticipated fifth ‘Indiana Jones’ outing, which has raised plenty of interest (beyond the obvious given audiences’ love for Indy movies) as it marks the first time Steven Spielberg isn’t directing one of the films. Instead, James Mangold recently wrapped filming, with the likes of Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Kretschmann, Boyd Holbrook, Antonio Banderas and Toby Jones filling out the main cast.

The storyline for this latest adventure is under strict security for now, but you just know it’ll involve Dr. Jones getting into scrapes as he tries to retrieve an object. That movie is scheduled to land in theaters on June 30th next year.

As opposed to Ford, Segel has largely found his groove on the small screen, appearing in shows such as ‘How I Met Your Mother’, ‘Dispatches from Elsewhere’ (which he also created) and, most recently, ‘Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty,’ in which he plays Paul Westhead.

Film-wise, though, Segel did recently appear in Netflix title ‘Windfall’ opposite Jesse Plemons and Lily Collins and romantic drama ‘The Sky is Everywhere’ before that.

‘Ted Lasso’, meanwhile, recently kicked off shooting its third (and, according to the creators, final) season in the UK and should be on our screens later this year.

Premiering on Netflix beginning March 18th is the new thriller ‘Windfall’ from director Charlie McDowell (‘The One I Love’).

The movie stars Jason Segel (‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall’) as a squatter who is forced to hold hostage the rich couple (Lily Collins and Jesse Plemons) that owns the house he is staying in, when they come home unexpectedly.

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Lily Collins and Oscar nominee Jesse Plemons about their work on ‘Windfall.’

You can read the full transcript of our interview with Lily Collins and Jesse Plemons below, or watch a video of our interview with Collins, Plemons, Jason Segel, and director Charlie McDowell about ‘Windfall’ in the player above.

Moviefone: To begin with Jesse, could you tell us about your character and your approach to playing him?

Jesse Plemons: From the moment I signed on, when we started reworking the character as a younger man, who was originally written in his 50s, I watched a lot of footage on these types of people. Then, Charlie and I did make our own decisions about his life, what led him to be here and all that. As it went on, it became more interesting to just focus on the character’s journey unraveling in this set up and give enough information where the audience has some idea of it.

So, we were constantly getting very specific and deciding things for ourselves. Then as it went on, I started looking at him as an ancient symbol of greed, which has been around obviously since the beginning of time. I answered a lot of those questions, but it just didn’t seem as interesting as the dynamic between the characters.

MF: Finally Lily, as an actress, is it important to you to fully map out your character’s backstory before you begin shooting?

Lily Collins: Yeah. If something’s not on the page, it’s really important for me to do a deep dive into where she’s coming from. Because you can only ever start a movie from where you start a movie, but you have to know where they’ve been and where they’ve come from to dictate how they’re moving forward within every scene. Especially with this one, where there’s so much bubbling under the surface.

There’s a lot that each of these characters remembers throughout the story because they’re forced to face themselves in this one location, with all these unexpected twists and turns. Without knowing the choices that my character made to get herself into this position, there’s nothing to then either appreciate or resent for her.

She needs these memories, even if it’s just something that I know and nobody else knows in order to help dictate how she accepts or rejects the situations. So, it’s always important to create that. That’s also part of the fun part of prep, right? You not only get to figure out who this person is emotionally and internally, but also then how that manifests in their wardrobe, in their hair choices, in their accent choices, in the way in which they treat other humans.

That was something really wonderful in this experience. We all got to do that separately, but also together in prep because it was such a small cast. Then, everyone’s choices helped inform I think all of ours as well, because it was a real team project.

Richard E. Grant, Sally Field Join AMC Anthology Series ‘Dispatches From Elsewhere’

    Fox Searchlight/Netflix

Jason Segel’s anthology series “Dispatches From Elsewhere” just added Oscar nominee Richard E. Grant and two-time Oscar winner Sally Field.

The hour-long series is about a group of ordinary people who discover a puzzle “hiding just behind the veil of everyday life”. The series will include “viewer engagement elements across multiple platforms.” So it’s not the next “Bandersnatch,” but maybe viewers will get to vote on plotlines?

The series is created by and stars “How I Met Your Mother” alum Segel. It’s scheduled to begin production on 10 episodes this summer in Philadelphia.

Eve Lindley, who is best known as “Hot Carla” on on “Mr Robot,” has also joined the cast.

Grant’s films include “Withnail and I,” “Logan,” and “The Iron Lady”; he was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for “Can You Ever Forgive Me?

Field (who also has 3 Emmys) most recent played Dr. Greta Mantleray on the Netflix mini-series “Maniac.”

How he met his new series.

Jason Segel is returning to TV for the first time since “How I Met Your Mother” ended. AMC announced his new anthology series, “Dispatches From Elsewhere,” during the TCAs on Saturday.

AMC also announced renewals for three more series: Both “Better Call Saul” and “Fear the Walking Dead” were renewed for their fifth seasons, with “McMafia” renewed for Season 2. “The Terror” had already been renewed, and announced with a new setting.

Back to Jason Segel. He both created and will star in “Dispatches From Elsewhere,” which follows “a group of ordinary people who stumble onto a puzzle hiding just behind the veil of everyday life” and “come to find that the mystery winds far deeper than they ever imagined.”

Jason Segel: “I am thrilled to be telling this story at AMC. I truly could not imagine a better team and a more perfect home for this material.”

AMC programming president David Madden: “AMC has a proven history of finding shows that rise above, in every sense, and we think ‘Dispatches from Elsewhere’ will be an incredible addition to that club. This is a very special project based on a truly unique premise and peopled by vivid characters, all driven by Jason’s wildly creative vision. We’re thrilled for audiences to see this bold, witty and enthralling series.”

And now we have another show to look forward to watching … whenever it’s ready to be dispatched!

Meanwhile, “Better Call Saul” Season 4 premieres Monday, August 6 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on AMC. “Fear the Walking Dead” will return for the second half of Season 4 on Sunday, August 12.

  • Famous TV Shows That Launched Stars’ Careers

Freaks and GeeksEvery famous actor has one performance that served as a breakout role, and for many, that role was in a television series. Inviting the actors into your home on a daily or weekly basis is one of the most magical things about television. So you feel invested in those moments you see a star being born. From low-rated shows that only ran a season to ratings behemoths that remained popular for more than a decade, these series launched the careers of some beloved stars.

    ‘Friends’ (1994 – 2004)

It’s easy to forget that the cast of “Friends” were all unknowns at the start. Family Ties,” and a handful of movie roles. Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer were all working actors but none had yet found a project that took off. Everything changed when the six of them sat on that orange velvet couch at Central Perk, drinking oversized lattes. Despite some spectacularly awful 1990s fashion and those distinctive haircuts, “Friends” doesn’t feel dated and remains one of the classic sitcoms of all time. The cast has not stopped working since the show went off the air, proving they will always be there for us.

    ‘My So-Called Life’ (1994 – 1995)

Critically beloved and tragically canceled after one season, “My So-Called Life” launched the careers of Homeland,” while Leto, among other achievements, won every Supporting Acting award possible for his work in “Dallas Buyers Club.”

    ‘Freaks and Geeks’ (1999 – 2000)

Cult classic “Freaks and Geeks” was a veritable talent farm, launching the careers of Linda Cardellini, John Francis Daley, Seth Rogen, James Franco, Jason Segel, and Busy Phillips. It was also created by Paul Feig (“Bridesmaids“) and executive produced by a little-known guy named Judd Apatow. So how exactly did this dramedy last for a mere 15 episodes on NBC? That’s one of television’s most enduring mysteries.

    ‘ER’ (1994 – 2009)

Best known for stints on “The Facts of Life” and “Roseanne,” ER.” It’s a perfect example of the right actor being cast in the right role at the right time. Clooney brought an immense amount of charm to the role, and Doug became the quintessential bad boy with a heart of gold. His chemistry with co-star Julianna Margulies was electric, making Doug and Carol Hathaway one of the iconic TV couples of the ’90s. And don’t forget — he brought the Caesar haircut back. Clooney left “ER” in 1999 to pursue movies, but returned as a guest star several times, proving that he never forgot where he came from.

Lest you think Clooney and Margulies were the only stars to emerge from County General, don’t forget that Noah Wyle, Ming-Na, Alex Kingston, and Maura Tierney all had breakout roles on “ER” as well, making it a destination show for dramatic talent in the ’90s.

    ‘Dawson’s Creek’ (1998 – 2003)

Dawson’s Creek.” Holmes even famously delayed her audition so she could star as Lola in her high school’s production of “Damn Yankees.” While the entire cast delivers fantastic performances, the one to watch is future three-time Oscar nominee Williams. Her portrayal of the troubled Jen Lindley displays a maturity well beyond her 15 years.
