What’s the story of ‘Street Fighter’?

    'Street Fighter' (1994)
    ‘Street Fighter’ (1994)

The games revolve around an international martial arts tournament where fighters from around the world compete to prove their strength and abilities. This is a franchise that gained massive popularity with the release of ‘Street Fighter II’ in 1991, which introduced revolutionary mechanics such as combo attacks and special moves, and greatly influenced arcade and home console gaming.

Subsequent titles have expanded the game’s universe, introducing new characters, complex storylines, and enhanced graphics and gameplay mechanics, so there are potentially rich pickings for anyone looking to adapt it.

Which brings us to the 1994 movie, which didn’t exactly cover itself in glory, but has a fanbase. It starred the likes of Jean-Claude Van Damme, Raul Julia, Ming-Na Wen, Simon Callow and, in a somewhat more surprising addition, Kylie Minogue (who, let’s not forget, pursued acting before becoming a pop megastar).

More recent was 2009’s ‘Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li,’ directed by Andrzej Bartkowiak. That one starred Kristin Kreuk as the title character, who as a child witnesses her father being captured by wealthy gangster Bison. When she grows up, she goes into a quest for justice and bring down his criminal organization known as Shadaloo.

If you haven’t really heard of that one, you’re not alone –– made for $18 million by Hyde Park Entertainment, it took in around $12 million worldwide and failed to make much of an impact in pop culture.

There was also an animated series, which got a better reception than either movie, but still didn’t really break out.

The latest attempt at bringing ‘Street Fighter’ to screens has been in the works for a couple of years, since Legendary announced its acquisition of live-action film and TV rights back in 2023.

In that time, it has been through at least one set of directors, as ‘Talk to Me’ sibling duo Danny and Michael Philippou hopped aboard in April of that year, only to depart after a few months of development.

Kitao Sakurai, who previously directed 2021 buddy comedy/prank movie ‘Bad Trip,’ was hired in February, and is still attached.

The movie already features a clutch of names, from A-listers to athletes and musicians.

Jason Momoa is confirmed to play Blanka, a feral man with green skin who comes from the Brazilian jungle.

Noah Centineo will be Ken Masters, the best friend/sometime enemy of fellow fighter Ryu, which is the role ‘Snake Eyes’ Andrew Koji landed.

Wrestler Roman Reigns is Akuma, a villainous type who defeated his brother, who happens to be Ryu and Ken’s master.

Fellow WWE veteran Cody Rhodes has the part of Guile, a US Air Force pilot and brawler who has sworn to take down Shadaloo.

Country singer Orville Peck will be Vega, who in the game is a masked claw fighter from Spain who uses a personal fighting style combining Japanese ninjutsu and Spanish bullfighting.

Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson will play Balrog, a disgraced boxer who is also the bodyguard of Bison. He’s reportedly training to perform his own stunts for the movie.

And finally, Callina Liang, last seen in ghost story ‘Presence’ is playing Chun-Li.

Dastmalchian has enjoyed a real boost to his career of late, but he’s been plugging away for years.

He’s become known for memorable, scene-stealing roles in the likes of the ‘Ant-Man’ franchise and ‘The Belko Experiment.’

Other movies include ‘Blade Runner 2049’, ‘Dune: Part One’, and 2021’s ‘The Suicide Squad.’

More recently, he enjoyed acclaim as the star of indie horror ‘Late Night with the Devil’ and was also seen in ‘The Boogeyman’ and ‘The Life of Chuck’.

On the small screen, he appeared in shows including ‘Murderbot’, ‘Gotham’ and ‘The Flash’.

Coming up, he has the likes of the movies ‘Dust Bunny’, ‘Sender’ and ‘The Cure’ and has a role in the next season of Netflix’s ‘One Piece’.

When will the new ‘Street Fighter’ movie hit theaters?

Despite the growing cast ranks and the presence of a director, Sony and Legendary are looking to avoid the mistakes of the past and haven’t planted a flag for this one just yet.

Which makes sense given ‘Street Fighter’s somewhat tortuous development history. This one might actually have a fighting chance.

    • Milly Alcock is starring in the movie.

As with DC Studios boss James Gunn and his upcoming ‘Superman’, follow-up film ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ is undergoing a name change.

Gunn changed ‘Superman’ to simply the character’s name, and ‘Supergirl’ is likewise losing the subtitle

The movie, which adapts Tom King’s comic, has Milly Alcock playing Kara Zor-El (cousin of Superman) and Craig Gillespie in the director’s chair. It has wrapped shooting in the UK for a 2026 release.

    HZE9ZYwn82Uv0YNMTwx2g5

Gunn confirmed to Rolling Stone why the movie’s title changed, and how the decision relates to his own ‘Superman’:

“I’m always cutting. “Legacy” was really — we do something called a premortem. A premortem is you get together with your group that’s doing the project. It’s usually about a couple months before shooting, and you go, hypothetically, ‘If it’s an epic disaster, what are the things that we’re doing today that are going to cause it to be an epic disaster? Everyone here can speak freely.’ One of the things I brought up was, it was called ‘Superman: Legacy’. Even though I was the one that gave it that title, I just wasn’t sure. First of all, I’m sick of the superhero title, colon, other-name thing. And then also it seemed to be looking back when we’re looking forward, even though it does have to do with legacy in the movie itself. And everybody was like, ‘Oh, yeah, no, change it.’

While the exact storyline for ‘Supergirl’ has yet to be confirmed, we do know it’ll be a big-scale sci-fi film based on King and Bilquis Evely’s comic run. It features a “darker, harsher” version of Kara raised on a surviving chunk of Krypton who sees everyone around her die. And it’ll see her helping a young alien who is seeking vengeance for the death of her own family.

This is what Gunn said at the time of his big DC Studios announcement:

“This is a very different type of Supergirl. In our film, we see the difference between Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from, you know, the time he’s an infant, versus Supergirl, who was raised on a rock chip-off of Krypton and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl and is much more hardcore. She’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”

And not forgetting Jason Momoa, who has form with the previous incarnation of the DC movie universe (he played Aquaman, in case you forgot), who will be intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo.

When will ‘Supergirl’ be in theaters?

‘Supergirl’ is one of the few DC Studios projects to have an actual release date and is scheduled for June 26th, 2026.

‘Street Fighter,’ which adapts the hugely successful Capcom console and home entertainment system game franchise, has been through the wringer in the past (see below for details on the two largely unsuccessful movies spawned from it), but Legendary and the games company is hoping for better things from a fresh iteration.

And it has some actors now in talks to join the cast, with Deadline reporting that Jason Momoa (who is enjoying success with ‘Minecraft’) eyeing a role alongside Noah Centineo, Andrew Koji and Roman Reigns.

Jason Momoa surely needs no introduction, as he’s been busy for years. He’s worked on giant franchises such as the DCEU (where he was Aquaman, including in his own successful movies) and the ‘Fast & Furious’ universe, playing flamboyant villain Dante.

Notable upcoming movies include ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ (with Momoa playing Lobo), ‘The Wrecking Crew’ and manuscript crime mystery ‘Hand of Dante’ (no, nothing to do with his ‘Fast’ role.) He’s also co-created and stars in new Apple TV+ show ‘Chief of War.’

Noah Centineo is a rising star who got his break with the likes of Netflix romantic comedy/coming-of-age movie series ‘To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before’ and has gone on to movie roles including in ‘Black Adam,’ 2019’s ‘Charlie’s Angels’ and this year’s ‘Warfare.’

He may be best known for another Netflix series, action thriller ‘The Recruit.’

Andrew Koji also found notability on the small screen, with his starring role in Cinemax series ‘Warrior.’ He’s been seen in movies including ‘Bullet Train,’ ‘Snake Eyes’ and ‘Boy Kills World.’

Koji is part of the cast for a new crime thriller series called ‘Haven’ that also stars Sophie Turner.

Wrestler-turned-actor Reigns has been seen in movies such as ‘Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw’ and ‘The Wrong Missy.’

When will the new ‘Street Fighter’ movie hit theaters?

While Sony and Legendary (tellingly, the former is no longer mentioned in reports on the movie) announced last year that ‘Street Fighter’ would land in theaters on March 20th next year, the fact that the cast are only now in talks and there’s no current word on a writer or a producer makes us think that we’ll be waiting a little longer for this one.

    • ‘Dune’ director Denis Villeneuve is considering Robert Pattinson for the third movie.
    • Right now, no formal offer has been made.
    • The likes of Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya and Florence Pugh would return.

Having changed his mind about taking a break from the rugged, wind-whipped dunes of Arrakis following ‘Dune: Part Two,’ Denis Villeneuve has actively begun putting the pieces together for a third ‘Dune’ outing.

    Pxt18Jw7zmtazBCTzSPmI5

It’s not entirely surprising, since The first ‘Dune’ released day-and-date on streaming in 2021 amid the pandemic, earned $410 million globally, while 2024’s follow-up brought in $714.6 million globally.

But while Villeneuve looked to be pivoting to another big movie, he’s since confirmed that his focus is now the next ‘Dune,’ likely ‘Dune: Messiah,’ adapting the next book in Frank Herbert’s sprawling novel series.

And according to Deadline, the filmmaker now has his eye on a big name to join the cast: Robert Pattinson.

The actor, known for the ‘Twilight’ franchise and a host of other work since (including the title role in ‘The Batman’) is the subject of interest from Villeneuve and backers Legendary for a key role.

We’d be remiss at this point, if we didn’t point out that this is far from a done deal; in fact, no offer has been made. Yet The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Pattinson is circling the role of the chief villain in the film, one that is possibly Scytale from the Herbert stories.

In case you’ve never cracked the books, he’s a Tleilaxu Face Dancer who participates in the conspiracy to topple the rule of Paul Atreides.

The new ‘Dune’ would continue the story of Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides, who has a powerful and dark destiny to become ruler of the various worlds.

Villeneuve has been clear, however, that this won’t be the third part of a trilogy.

This is what the director said last year:

“First, it’s important that people understand that for me, it was really a diptych. It was really a pair of movies that will be the adaptation of the first book. That’s done and that’s finished. If I do a third one, which is in the writing process, it’s not like a trilogy. It’s strange to say that, but if I go back there, it’s to do something that feels different and has its own identity.”

Villeneuve has been working on the script with regular collaborator Jon Spaihts.

Who will be in ‘Dune: Messiah’?

Given where the story goes, it’s seemingly a given that stars Timothée Chalamet, Florence Pugh and Zendaya will all return, since Paul Atreides, Princess and Irulan and Chani all feature in the ongoing narrative, not the least because their love/power triangle will be a key part of it.

Also likely to come back? We’d expect Anya Taylor-Joy‘s Alia Atreides: Paul’s sister, a powerful figure in the Bene Gesserit, who was in just one scene in ‘Dune: Part Two,’ but has an expanded role to play going forward.

Plus Javier Bardem’s Fremen leader Stilgar.

    And that’s not all…

Who else will –– spoiler alert! –– be back for the third ‘Dune’ movie?

Jason Momoa in 'Dune'. Photo: Warner Bros.

We’re putting this one in its own section, since it constitutes a spoiler and we don’t want anyone who hasn’t read the ‘Dune’ books to have their enjoyment curtailed.

During a recent interview, Jason Momoa revealed that his sword master and mentor Duncan Idaho would be back for the new movie, despite his character dying in the first one.

Here’s what Momoa said on ‘Today’:

“I’m making a comeback. You heard it first, right here with you, baby! Well, I’m not sure if I’m going to get in trouble or not, but it’s the same thing like ‘Game of Thrones’, you know what I mean? If you didn’t read the books, it’s not my fault, right? Yeah, there’s going to be… I’m going to be coming back.”

For the record, and again, spoiler alert: in one of the later books of Frank Herbert’s series, Duncan comes back as a clone.

What else is Robert Pattinson working on?

Pattinson was most recently on screens in Bong Joon Ho’s new sci-fi satire ‘Mickey 17’ about a man who serves on a spaceship who is replaced with a clone of himself every time he dies on board. The film was not a success at the box office.

He’s also worked on Lynne Ramsey’s new comedy horror drama ‘Die, My Love,’ opposite Jennifer Lawrence and has filmed romantic movie ‘The Drama.’

Right now, the actor is at work on Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ for Universal.

And, of course, there is his other big Warners job, Matt Reeves’ long-gestating ‘The Batman’ sequel, which should kick off filming at the end of this year, though it has been through several delays already while Reeves works on the script.

But if Pattinson is able to squeeze in a trip to Arrakis –– assuming he does lock into the movie –– this summer, that would mean him being on set for three giant movies this year alone.

When will the third ‘Dune’ movie touch down in theaters?

Neither Warner Bros. nor Legendary has made any statement about the release date for the new movie.

While Warners had been holding a December 2026 slot for a Villeneuve movie, but that would seem a very tough turnaround for something on the level of a ‘Dune,’ especially when production is only scheduled for later this summer. But watch this space!

Just when it looked like big screen video game adaptations had left their recent golden age in terms of box office (witness ‘Borderlands’ face plant last year), along comes a giant hit we’re not sure anyone truly expected.

A Minecraft Movie,’ which opened on Friday, has soared to number one at the box office, launching with $163 million domestically, $150.7 million overseas and that mammoth $313.7 million worldwide total.

    hCuUjEgel7kznFLKw8pp81

The movie, adapted (loosely, but clearly with enough elements to please its young target audience –– more on that in a moment) from the hugely popular Mojang video game, stars Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks and Jennifer Coolidge, and was directed by ‘Napoleon Dynamite’s Jared Hess.

With its blend of basic quest narrative and plenty of references to iconic game elements such as “chicken jockey” and others, it appealed to young gamers and the meme crowd equally. Reports flooded social media of the audiences reacting to appearances from certain characters like Marvel fans to moments in ‘Avengers: Endgame.’

Here’s what Jesse Ehrman, Warner Bros. president of production and development, said about getting it right:

“We had a lot of trial and error along the way. It took a while to tell the right story with the right team. There’s something special about the way people connect with the game. We knew if we could harness the same love and humor and creativity in a cinematic experience, the potential would be limitless.”

Among the records that the new movie has broken include becoming the biggest opening of 2025 so far (besting ‘Captain America: Brave New World,’ whose total gross it should surpass in due time), the record opening for a movie based on a video game (outplaying ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie,’ which launched in 2023 with $146.3 million,) and the biggest domestic opening figure for both Black and Momoa.

And that’s not all! It also raked in Warner Bros. largest three-day total in April (really reaching here) and the biggest Sunday of All Time (besting ‘Barbie’).

Finally, a true stretch: it’s the only film in box office history to open to over $50 million and see no drop Saturday — instead, rising by 4%, making it the only film ever to achieve this.

In 1942, Italian diplomat Count Caleazzo Ciano said, “success has many fathers, but failure is an orphan,” and that can be particularly true of Hollywood blockbusters.

With the movie doing huge business at the box office, co-heads of the Warner Bros. Pictures Group, Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy, who have been beset recently by some flops and are reportedly in fear for their jobs, were quick to capitalize on the success.

    Here’s their statement:

“ ‘A Minecraft Movie’ represents the largest domestic opening weekend of 2025, the biggest since July, and Warner Bros.’ largest opening weekend since 2023. This is truly a world-class achievement! This is what happens when we believe in the power of our creativity, each other, and the strength of great storytelling.”

If you’re not in the game’s target audience, allow us to brief you on the basics… The game, from Swedish developer Mojang AB, allows you to create and shape an entire world, and by 2014 had sold more than 35 million copies across PCs, the Xbox 360, and mobile platforms.

Much like with Lego, the only stories here are those created by users, who can choose whether to explore, create or fight with each other.

There are also nocturnal monsters stalking the place, which you must deal with. It reached 100 million users just a few years after launch and helping spark Microsoft to acquire Mojang for $2.5 billion in 2014.

Since then, it hasn’t been quite as much in the pop cultural zeitgeist (the likes of ‘Fortnite’ have tended to dominate), but it’s recognizable intellectual property.

What has Happened with the Development of the Movie Adaptation So Far?

Around the time of the Microsoft purchase, Warners entered talks with prolific producer and director Shawn Levy, but his packed scheduled and slow development on the movie meant he never ended up in the director’s chair.

After Levy came ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ co-creator and self-avowed ‘Minecraft’ fan Rob McElhenney was next in line as director when the movie was still being planned as an animated release. He, like Levy, appears to have been the victim of scheduling, and has focused his video game-loving energies on co-creating and starring in Apple TV+’s ‘Mythic Quest’ series.

With ‘Wonder Woman’s Jason Fuchs sticking around for script work, the movie then targeted Steve Carell as a potential star but… well… you can guess what happened.

The most recent time before now that ‘Minecraft’ news showed up, it was with ‘Raising Victor Vargas’ Peter Sollett writing and directing.

With Jared Hess on board, it finally got in gear. And the rest is box office history.

Will there be a ‘Minecraft’ sequel?

At this point, we’d predict several. And probably a TV show. And maybe a video ga… wait a minute!

‘A Minecraft Movie’ receives 6 out of 10 stars.

In theaters on April 4th, ‘A Minecraft Movie’ adapts the wildly popular (at least, a few years ago, before the likes of ‘Fortnite’ and ‘Roblox’ took over) video game where players can craft whatever they want in the blocky universe known as the “Overworld.”

While some recent game adaptations have triumphed through finding a unique way into the story, ‘A Minecraft Movie’ has only occasional nods towards that, preferring instead to appeal to its young-skewing audience via bombastic action and comedy.

Video game adaptations were tarred for years with a lack of success, and to be clearer, a lack of understanding what really needs to happen with you convert something from one medium to another. Then, the likes of ‘Detective Pikachu,’ Netflix’sArcane,’ the burgeoning ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ franchise and even ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ proved that it could work –– though that last one is more box office behemoth than true creative challenge.

Along the same lines; albeit product rather than game, is ‘The LEGO Movie,’ which showed that it you find the right creators, who hit upon a great idea, you can end up with something really special, particularly if it’s people who don’t treat the source material like gospel to be taken fully successfully.

It’s that last entry to which we might best compare ‘A Minecraft Movie’, though put up against the sheer lunatic invention of ‘LEGO,’ the new offering certainly falls a lot shorter, with fewer points with which to recommend it.

    Script and Direction

It’s normal for a project that has been in development for as long as the ‘Minecraft’ outing to boast contributions from a laundry list of writers –– let’s be honest, even the successful ones usually come to screens with a host of uncredited input by funny/professional people. Yet with five people listed on the screenplay: Chris Bowman, Hubbel Palmer, Neil Widener, Gavin James and Chris Galletta, you might expect ‘A Minecraft Movie’ to have come through with a few more original ideas.

Yet for all the concepts drawn from within the game (build anything you can imagine from the blocky source fodder of the “Overworld” and the various creatures/characters who populate the game), this still falls back on some awfully familiar structures, including Hunt for the Object, the Villain who Hates Everything the Heroes Care About and Seeks to Destroy it and the Coming of Age/Believe in Yourself storylines.

What we have here is essentially a remix of those, and while, yes, a lot of films of this genre go for that, it’s how you use them. ‘A Minecraft Movie,’ while sometimes poking fun at the ideas, goes the fairly basic route. Some of the gags land (largely sold by the performers, more on that below), but the whole is less than the sum of its parts. And some of the parts feel awfully second-hand.

As a director, Jared Hess has put out fiercely original, goofy takes on life such as his breakout ‘Napoleon Dynamite,’ and he does manage to bring some of his offbeat comic energy to the film. It’s also credit to him and his team that the world comes across as decent, as opposed to the rushed, cloudy CG-scapes that have brought the likes of ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ low.

Still, there remains the feeling that ‘Minecraft’ has seen Hess’ voice fed through the studio machine to some degree.

    Cast and Performances

If there’s one element that feels like it drives everything else, it’s the paired zaniness of Jack Black and Jason Momoa.

Black, of course, is bringing his usual manic energy to the role of Steve, the crafter who found his way to the Overworld and in it, discovered what he was looking for (alongside a loyal, blocky wolf companion named Dennis).

If you’re not a fan of Black’s particular, enthusiastic and occasionally musical delivery, you’ll probably be turned off by his wild-eyed posturing and his gesticulating. But vibe with him (and a lot of the kid audience already does) and he brings the role to vivid life, managing to be silly and heartfelt in one package.

Jason Momoa, meanwhile, has proved in the past that he can lean into weirdness when called upon, and here his Garrett, a shaggy-haired, pink-tasseled leather jacket-wearing wannabe badass is another solid comic creation for the actor to bring to life. By turns fake-macho and sensitive, he wouldn’t be out of place in the world of video game documentary ‘The King of Kong’ and he’s just on the right side of annoying as to be watchable.

Also on a comic vibe –– though sidelined to such a degree as to almost be completely detached from the narrative at points –– is Jennifer Coolidge, whose kooky energy serves her well as Vice Principal Marlene, who ends up on a dinner date with one of the Minecraft characters who makes it into the real world and chews on her lines almost as much as her meal.

Elsewhere, the other human characters such as Emma Myers‘ Natalie and Sebastian Hansen’s Henry are there to provide the heart, which makes them much blander, though they do get their moments.

And while her specific comedy vibe is mostly wasted, Danielle Brooks also has one or two decent gags.

On the villainous side, we have the always-reliable Rachel House (‘Thor: Ragnarok‘ and many of Taika Waititi’s other movies), who voices piggy witch Malgosha, a creature with a dark, destructive agenda. She might not sound all that threatening, but she sells the character’s comic business, particularly during a climatic showdown with Black’s Steve.

    Final Thoughts

‘A Minecraft Movie’ never hits the heights of ‘The LEGO Movie,’ but it’s certainly more willing to take risks than Illumination’s ‘Mario’ effort.

Definitely aimed more at younger audiences (this is a real case of “parents, ask your kids,” it’s overstuffed and under-considered, but does the job.

Four misfits—Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (Jason Momoa), Henry (Sebastian Hansen), Natalie (Emma Myers) and Dawn (Danielle Brooks)—find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. To get back home, they’ll have to master this world (and protect it from evil things like piglins and zombies, too) while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve (Jack Black). Together, their adventure will challenge all five to be bold and to reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative…the very skills they need to thrive back in the real world.

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking in person with Oscar nominated actress Danielle Brooks about her work on ‘A Minecraft Movie’, if she was a fan of the game, her first reaction to the screenplay, being on the set, collaborating with director Jared Hess, her character’s relationship with a wolf named Dennis, working with Jack Black and Jason Momoa, and if she could build anything … what would she build?

You can read the full interview below or click on the video player above to watch our interviews with Brooks, Emma Myers and Sebastian Hansen, and director Jared Hess.

Moviefone: To begin with, how familiar were you with the Minecraft game before making this movie, and what was your first reaction to the screenplay and the way they were going to adapt the game?

Danielle Brooks: Coming into ‘Minecraft’, I knew nothing. I am such a newbie, and was just being introduced to this world. Growing up, we did play a few video games, but I really wasn’t exposed, so I missed out a lot. I’ve learned now. I’ve missed out a lot. But as far as reading the screenplay and going into shooting it, it’s a lot of the same stuff but a lot of things we improved. You know what I mean? A lot of things we were discovering as we went along, especially for Dawn. I think we were still trying to figure out who is she, but I think we came up with some really great stuff, with Jared Hess at the head. I wasn’t writing nothing. Well, I did improv a lot, so maybe I should get a writer’s credit. But we just really were able to figure it out together, and I really love what we came up with.

MF: What was it like being on the set and watching director Jared Hess execute his unique vision for this project?

DB: He was definitely the right guy for the job. I mean, if you’ve seen any of his other films, his humor is there. It’s a little odd, but which makes for a really natural, real thing. Just something that we can look at and relate to, I think. So, working with him was pretty awesome. He’s a super nice guy, and wonderful with kids and adults, so I was excited to get to work with him.

MF: Your character, Dawn, forms a friendship with a wolf named Dennis in the movie. Can you talk about that relationship and what were you working with when you were acting opposite Dennis?

DB: Good question. With Dennis, it was pretty amazing because, first of all, I was working with was a real person. Shout out to the stunt team. There was this guy dressed in all gray with these black and white dots all over his body. Then, he would actually have this square head, that was shaped like Dennis’s head, that he would be in and be in his physical world. So, I was acting alongside him, really using my imagination, really getting to be just a little 10-year-old kid with that. But it was fun. Being able to be the one that was able to give Dennis the bone and have that connection with him was nice. It’s very ironic that my husband’s name is Dennis too, so it just makes sense.

MF: What are Jack Black and Jason Momoa like to work with and have as scene partners in this movie?

DB: They were horrible because they tried to steal the show from me every time. The thing about me is you cannot take my shot. I am the star! I don’t care what it says on the call sheet. I’m the star! No, I’m joking. They were wonderful. They really set a beautiful tone on set, and I’m really grateful for that. Jack is one of one, and Jason was so lovely because he let his inner kid go, which gave us permission to do the same. I really hope to get to work with those guys again. I really do. It was no egos on set. It was just good people wanting to put a good project together.

MF: Finally, if you could build anything, what would you build and why?

DB: I would build my own Willy Wonka Chocolate Factory. That’s what I would want. I really do. I want all of the candies to make you blow up, like Violet Beauregarde, I think it that was her name. I want all of the things. I want the gobstopper, Chocolate fountains and stuff. And Oompa-Loompas. Why not?

    Preview:

    • Jason Momoa will finally get the chance to play DC character Lobo.
    • The ‘Aquaman’ actor is set to appear in ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.’
    • The ‘Supergirl’ movie is due in 2026.

For several years now, Jason Momoa has been the superhero known as Aquaman, first introduced via a cameo in 2016’s ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ before starring alongside the likes of Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot and Ezra Miller in ‘Justice League.’

He went on to lead two ‘Aquaman’ stand-alone movies, the wildly successful first movie in 2018 and the less well-received (and much less financially profitable ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ in 2023.

With James Gunn landing the job of DC Studios boss and most of Zack Snyder’s DC Extended Universe consigned to cinematic history, it appeared that Momoa’s days of superhero work –– at least for DC –– might be over.

Not so! After several months of him talking about how much he wants to switch gears and play the antiheroic bounty hunter Lobo, it would appear he has gotten his wish, and via a project produced by Gunn, no less.

According to Deadline, Momoa will be showing up as Lobo in ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.’

    HZE9ZYwn82Uv0YNMTwx2g5

Momoa took to Instagram to confirm the news, sharing a chunk of a previous interview quote where he talks about his hopes to play the character:

“I collect comics, and I don’t do so much anymore, but was always my favorite, and I always wanted to play Lobo, because I’m like, ‘Hello? It’s the perfect role.’ ”

Alongside the Instagram screenshot, Momoa posted a caption this morning that reads, “They called.”

And while Gunn –– usually the source for official confirmation of such things –– didn’t post a long comment, he did put the following up on Instagram shortly after Momoa let slip the word…

    Who is Lobo?

Created by writer Roger Slifer and artist Keith Giffen, Lobo is often depicted as a bounty hunter who enjoys chaos and destruction. He was first introduced in ‘Omega Men #3’ in June 1983.

An antihero known for his violent and irreverent personality, who hails from the planet Czarnia, Lobo possesses superhuman strength, regenerative abilities and an invulnerability that makes him a formidable opponent. His look was modelled on the members of glam rock band Kiss.

Various attempts have been made to bring Lobo to the big screen over the years. Filmmakers such as Guy Ritchie and Brad Peyton both took stabs, with Dwayne Johnson circling the roll for Peyton’s version.

In 2018, Warner Bros. and Michael Bay also flirted with the idea, but the concept never got off the ground. On the small screen, Emmett J. Scanlan played the character on the SyFy series ‘Krypton.’

While the exact storyline for ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ has yet to be confirmed, we do know it’ll be a big-scale sci-fi film based on Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s comic run. It features a “darker, harsher” version of Kara Zor-El raised on a surviving chunk of Krypton who sees everyone around her die.

This is what Gunn said at the time of the announcement:

“This is a very different type of Supergirl. In our film, we see the difference between Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from, you know, the time he’s an infant, versus Supergirl, who was raised on a rock chip-off of Krypton and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl and is much more hardcore. She’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”

Milly Alcock, who previously appeared on ‘House of the Dragon,’ won the title role back in January.

We do at least also know that Matthias Schoenaerts will be playing Krem of the Yellow Hill, who kills a young alien girl’s father. The girl in question –– Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll –– then draws Supergirl into the conflict.

Craig Gillespie is aboard to direct the movie from a script by Ana Nogueira, with the cameras scheduled to start rolling on January 13th in Los Angeles.

Besides this new, exciting development, the news has been less rosy, with the announcement that Matt Reeves’ ‘The Batman’ sequel will be pushed aback in the release schedule yet again, this time to October 1st, 2027 (for the record, it was originally aiming for an October 2025 launch).

Fans were naturally worried, and Gunn tried to assuage concerns by saying that the delay was to let Reeves perfect the script.

The studio boss/filmmaker also took to Threads to defend the delay:

“To be fair, a 5 year gap or more is fairly common in sequels. 7 years between ‘Alien’ and ‘Aliens.’ 14 years between ‘Incredibles.’ 7 years between the first two ‘Terminators.’ 13 years between ‘Avatars.’ 36 years between ‘Top Guns.’ And, of course, 6 years between ‘GuardiansVol 2. and Vol 3.”

When will ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ be in theaters?

To go up against Black Manta, who wields the power of the Black Trident, Aquaman needed to team up with his brother (and former King of Atlantis), Orm. Although an unlikely pair, Jason Momoa and Patrick Wilson made for a great duo screen, whether it be brotherly witty banters or coordinated fight scenes. Their chemistry amplified the movie.

‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ is the final movie of the previous DECU era. Current DC co-chairs James Gunn and Peter Safran are working towards their new vision for DC. The two previously announced ‘Superman Legacy,’ a film that will be a part of the new DC Universe Chapter One, ‘Gods and Monsters.’ Other DC films, such as ‘Joker: Folie á Deux’ will exist in Elseworld.

This could mean that there’s a slight chance we can see Momoa’s Aquaman return in some capacity, as Elseworld stories do not connect to the main canon of the new DCU.

Gunn and Safran introduced their new DC slate a year ago and have announced that ‘Superman Legacy’ has started production, and the ‘Creature Commandos’ episodes are being finished, with the series being released later this year. Gunn also teases upcoming projects and says, “incredible talents are being attached to new projects, planned & unplanned.”

“Today, ‘Superman Legacy’ is about to start production, episodes of ‘Creature Commandos’ are being finished that will release later this year, at least 2 more projects are gearing up to go in the next couple months, amazing scripts keep coming in, & incredible talent are being attached to new projects, planned & unplanned. Thank you!!”

    Preview:

    • Jack Black is the newest actor joining the ‘Minecraft’ movie.
    • Jason Momoa is starring in the film.
    • Jared Hess will direct the film, with shooting starting shortly.

He was part of the voice cast for one of last year’s biggest hits, ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’, playing the villainous –– and musical –– Bowser. It looks like Jack Black is ready to stay with the videogame adaptation genre, as Deadline reports that he’s joining Jason Momoa in the ‘Minecraft’ movie.

While Deadline could dig up no details on the story, we do know that Jared Hess is in the director’s chair and shooting is scheduled to start this month in New Zealand.

    What is ‘Minecraft’?

    Minecraft game
    Minecraft game from Mojang Studios.

The most recent time that ‘Minecraft’ news showed up, it was with ‘Raising Victor Vargas’ Peter Sollett writing and directing. But with Jared Hess in charge, it appears to be finally getting in gear.

Which is a good thing, since ‘Minecraft’ is currently scheduled for release on April 4th, 2025.

‘Mario’ and ‘Minecraft’ are not the only game adaptation that Black is part of –– he’ll be heard this year as robotic goofball Claptrap in the movie based on the ‘Borderlands’ game. That one will be in cinemas on August 9th.
