Originally conceived and scripted by Bryan Woods and Scott Beck (with Krasinski working on the script when he agreed to direct and star), the first ‘A Quiet Place’ follows a family (Krasinski, real-life wife Emily Blunt and two kids) surviving in the aftermath of an alien invasion by blind aliens with incredibly powerful hearing who hunt and kill humans.

That movie enjoyed $50.2 million opening weekend, and a near $153M domestic and $341M global take, and received an Oscar nomination for Sound Editing.

Blunt, alongside young co-stars Noah Jupe and Millicent Simmonds returned for the sequel, ‘A Quiet Place: Part II’, written and directed by Krasinski, with Murphy joining the cast.

It saw its release pushed due to Covid, but brought the box office back alive during Memorial Day weekend 2021 with a $57M four-day start, ending with a $160M domestic and $297.3M global haul. A prequel, ‘A Quiet Place: Day One’, arrived in 2024, directed by Michael Sarnoski.

In select theaters on October 10 and globally on Netflix from October 24 is ‘A House of Dynamite’, the latest thriller from director Kathryn Bigelow, who previously made the likes of ‘The Hurt Locker’ and ‘Zero Dark Thirty’.

The new film boasts a sprawling ensemble cast including Rebecca Ferguson (‘Mission: Impossible –– Rogue Nation’), Idris Elba (‘Luther: The Fallen Sun’), Jared Harris (‘Chernobyl’), Gabriel Basso (‘Super 8’), Greta Lee (‘Past Lives’) and Tracy Letts (‘Lady Bird’).

Kathryn Bigelow is the perfect person to handle an inordinately tense, gripping and powerful near-real time military thriller. Less a war film more a story of the buildup to potential conflict, it marks her successful return to moviemaking following the less-than-enthusiastic reaction to 2017’s ‘Detroit’.

And this is a talent who deserved better than to sit on the sidelines for years.

    Script and Direction

Noah Oppenheim, an NBC news veteran, has been behind scripts including ‘Jackie’ and the recent Netflix series ‘Zero Day’, and pumps up the tension with a structure that resets the clock on the story across three acts, telling the same story of a missile headed to the US from an unknown aggressor from different viewpoints up and down the command chain from isolated military bases to the hubs of the White House and the Pentagon.

While the switch in focus means some characters are better served than others, and some of the more movie-ish peeks into personal lives dip precariously close to cheese, it still works.

Bigelow keeps the camera moving and the tension levels high for this one, aided by Volker Bertelmann‘s doomy, evolving score. It’s the director’s best in years and deserves to be seen.

With such a big cast to service, it’s impressive how many big names Bigelow has recruited here. Standouts include Rebecca Ferguson’s steely, but human operations officer at the White House, Jason Clarke as her boss, Gabriel Basso as a nervy National Security Advisor thrust into a new level of responsibility and Jared Leto as Secretary of Defense Baker, at once outraged by the lack of efficiency in his country’s response to the weapon headed its way a terrified for his estranged daughter (an underused Kaitlyn Dever).

If there’s a weak link here, it’s Idris Elba, who never really convinces as the President.

Moviefone: To begin with, Haley, this is a fantastic series! Can you talk about your first reaction to reading the screenplay for the pilot?

Haley Bennett: Thank you. That just attributes to our incredible writer, Jon Bokenkamp and we were just in such good hands with Jon Bokenkamp, Apple TV and with Jason Clarke producing this show. We feel so grateful and so privileged to be getting the feedback we’ve been getting for the show. What I love about the show is that it has this epic scope and this incredible budget and it’s such elevated television. But at the same time, I’m used to just doing little independent films and getting to explore characters on a much smaller scale, but we were able to explore both with our scenes between us and to be able to create incredibly real and fleshed out characters. Which is what Apple, I think, is so genius and brilliant at creating. It’s like the balance of both of those things.

MF: Haley, can you talk about your approach to playing Sydney and what is it like playing a character with so many secrets?

HB: Sydney is a character who’s someone that obviously has a lot of problems, a lot of demons, she’s been condemned by the CIA. She’s sent to Alaska to help with this crisis of this plane crash, and she knows the person that is that the CIA is looking for better than anybody. I loved her shades of gray. I loved her moral ambiguity and how I felt about her at first glance was very different as I read kind of these later episodes. I realized that what she represented was something far different than what I had originally believed about her. So, I just felt that that was a great opportunity to get to play a character who has this incredible arc and isn’t always what you see is what you get, but that has all these secrets that can destroy and that have catastrophic consequences.

'The Last Frontier,' premiering October 10, 2025 on Apple TV+.
‘The Last Frontier,’ premiering October 10, 2025 on Apple TV+.

MF: Dominic, so much is said about Havlock in the first episode before we ever see you on screen. How did that help you to create this character?

Dominic Cooper: There’s such a wealth of information in this script. For the first time ever, I don’t think it’s ever happened before, but we all 10 episodes have been handed to you before you begin. So, you have this wealth of information about the person you’re going to play, which is daunting. Just the character when I when I list the things that were presented in front of me, a Navy SEAL, CIA operative, mathematician, lecturer, I couldn’t come up with things that are further from who I am as a person, but it was a wonderful challenge to be presented with. Then a lot of the time you’re having to sit alone and write your history or decide on things that you have no real idea about. You’re not really that confident because you’ve made it up yourself. But with this, I could go backwards and forwards. I could listen to what people say about him. I could find the future and the flashbacks. It gave such a strong flavor of who this guy was. It’s been interesting to hear what people think of him. They keep mentioning devious and villainous and a bit of a murky moral compass. But I just saw him as someone who was trying to be killed and surviving and loved the people he cared about and was trying to do to reveal some truth and honesty about what was happening in the world. So, I had a lot of help and the showrunner who knew the material inside out because he’d had it for a long time. So, there’s no preparation. You still think you’re terrible in it, you still think that you’ve done a bad job, you still don’t believe in anything you do. But all you can do is have trust and utilize the information that’s presented before you.

MF: Finally, Dominic, can you talk about the cat and mouse game that begins between Havlock and Frank, and why Havlock takes an interest in him?

DC: I realize more now in watching it again, another tough thing about playing him in the cat and mouse relationship, I don’t ever get any scenes with him (Jason Clarke). I have one scene with him, essentially, where we’re face to face. I remember thinking, what a relief and how lovely it was to work with him. I was really happy because you get so much from actors, you look in their eyes and you listen, and you absorb and that completely informs your reaction. Nothing else does. Half of my stuff was into a radio without the person there and that was hard. So, it was very nice. But you don’t have that feeling of the day’s work and we got somewhere together, that you reached somewhere together. It was a bit like, “Oh, that’s done” and you don’t know whether it’s right because you also don’t hear the tone of how that person’s going to play it. So, you’re just doing it into a void. It’s still quite interesting. He’s so he’s so ahead of Frank. I just had to think of the bigger picture and go, “Well, actually, it’s so clever this”, you know, he’s there, he’s not there. I felt like I was in safe hands in terms of the guidance from both director and showrunner, but it was sad to have that wonderful cat and mouse, but not be present with the person.

What do you get when you splice together a procedural that would be at home on, say, NBC or CBS with the sort of hefty-budgeted serialized show that Apple has been making?

The answer might just be ‘The Last Frontier’, which has all the prestige TV trappings but also wants to throw all manner of plot twists at you.

Creators Bokenkamp and D’Ovidio have worked in both television and features, and the show feels like a mix of the two, but still works well. If you expect the prisoner transport concept to be a remake of ‘The Fugitive’ blended with ‘Con Air’, think again –– there are complications ahoy here.

Sam Hargrave directs the pilot and one other episode and sets the tone for the show, which takes its episode titles from the needle drops that appear and help the mood of the show. This is a stylish, action-packed affair.

Clarke is suitably gritty and charismatic as the US Marshall with a past of his own, who plays well against Hayley Bennett’s shady, troubled CIA agent.

While Dominic Cooper’s Levi Hartman sometimes verges into being that magical type who can do anything, he anchors the role with real emotion. And keep an eye out for some even bigger names glimpsed briefly in the chaotic opening plane crash who will come into play later in the season.

Moviefone: To begin with, Patricia, what was your first reaction to the screenplays for the series and the true story that it is based on, and what were some of the aspects of Maggie’s character that you were excited to explore on screen and bring to light?

Patricia Arquette: I was excited about this story just because it was such a nightmare, your family’s supposed to keep you safe. Here’s this guy who was this bastion of the community and this legal family with all this history and to see it reveal itself and to watch him lie. Then I started doing a lot of research and he lied about this, he lied about that, he stole this, he betrayed this way, he did that. Then looking up personality disorders, pathological people, eternal victims, charming people, I just thought that the other side is the codependent. The other side is the person who’s supporting everybody. “I support my husband. I support my kids. That’s what I do”. That’s a very dangerous personality trait, because you can get taken by somebody like this. But also, I liked in it that it was a family story, and you could feel their love, their history together. Jason, you know, he’s got to drive this whole thing. He’s this hustler who is constantly covering everything and he came in ready to go.

MF: Jason, were you aware of the true story the series is based on before you were cast, and how did you research into the case help inform your approach to playing Alex?

Jason Clarke: Well, it’s everything. It’s all you’ve got, isn’t it, really? It’s everything and you either pick it up or you don’t. I read everything. I listened to everything. The Audible books, I listened to it a lot before I watched it. I started eating to put on the weight as I’m playing a 265-pound redheaded man from South Carolina who loves the Gamecocks. So, I watch the Gamecocks! You know, I did a lot. I tried to do as much as I could, but it was terrifying. You know, everybody from Australia to France, the places that I was in between, and America, knew this thing, if not back to front, and were obsessed with it, or knew of it and were horrified by it or intrigued by it, or couldn’t help leaning into it. It was a massive undertaking, but what I felt interesting was that this man had deceived so many people. Hindsight was easy where you go, “Oh, he’s a bad man.” But to pull the wool over so many decent, lovely people’s eyes in a community, he had to be gregarious and fun, loving and generous, and that was what I was interested in showing. Because for me, on the human side of it, that just shows how much destruction and pain he wrought, if you could show everything that he had in his hands that he decided to destroy.

MF: Finally, Patricia, was there anything you learned from your research into the Murdaugh family that helped you to understand these characters and their actions?

PA: It’s weird because on one hand, these people know what they’re doing, and sometimes they delight in getting away with things. But on the other hand, there is almost a part of themselves that really doesn’t admit to themselves they’re doing any of this. Like, “Well, I just invested your money. I was going to pay you back and you were going to get interest. You were going to make more money, man. You don’t know anything about that”. So, it’s like they’re conning themselves at the same time they’re conning you, which is just so confusing, honestly.

Moviefone: To begin with, this is a fantastic series! Can you talk about your first reaction to reading the screenplay for the pilot and did you recognize immediately that Frank Remnick would be a great role for you to play in particular?

Jason Clarke: Thank you, mate. I do too and I love hearing that kind of response, man. We had a great time making it. I watch it when I don’t normally watch a lot of things, and I kept watching it. I’ve loved it, I really did. Dude, when they send you a script and they send you the pilot, you read it, and of course, that’s draft after draft. I’m now smart enough to go, “Well, this is, of course, their best foot forward” and I did love it. The plane crashing, the size and the scope, I thought, this is where Apple should be, and I want to be part of this. You know what I mean? I really did. I’ve been on a lot of sets in my career. So then, you know, it’s set in snow. I thought, “Well, that’s not easy.” I remember ‘The Revenant’ and I’m friends with Tom (Hardy) and Leo (DiCaprio), and I knew what they went through. So, I said, “Guys, how about the rest of them?” They sent me all 10 episodes, which was like, okay, they’ve done their work, because we’re going to have to shoot out of order. Then you read through and you’re just waiting with bated breath of when it’s going to fall down the hole. Because now, your hopes are up, and I read all 10 in like no time at all. Normally I go through with a marker on my iPad, and I’ll just mark that this doesn’t make sense in orange, and red is like that’s just not good. But I didn’t have any. I just read it straight through. I thought, “Man, he took me on a wild ride and brought me up the other side.” Sure, there’s a few things, I think some dialog, but I’m with that ride. That’s what it felt like to me, and then it was like, let’s get this 50 something year old body into shape and get on this roller coaster.

MF: Can you talk about the cat and mouse game that takes place between Frank and escaped convict Havlock and how Frank navigates that?

JC: Frank in a way, he’s a very real person. You know, he’s not a superhero. He’s not the best fighter or the fastest gun. He doesn’t have the level of training and abilities that Havlock has, and you find it out when you realize things. But he’s cunning and his dogged, and he’s decent, and he’s going to get up more times and he gets knocked down. You know, you’re going to have to finish Frank off if you want to beat him, and I love those parts. They’re very human and it enables you to bring the audience in closer to the reality of who he is. I mean, when we talked about the fight sequences with (director) Sam (Hargrave), I was like, “I’m not going to be, you know, Chris Hemsworth or Spider-Man or something here”. Frank’s going be beaten more times that he beats, but he’s going to come back and that’s how we leaned into that. So, he’s learning from Havlock, and he doesn’t realize just how far down the rabbit hole and into the dark that Havlock has led him. Then it starts to dawn on him. I love “No Country for Old Men’ that speech that Tommy Lee Jones makes about the dream. Frank starts to realize, he’s seen a lot of bad and dark in Chicago, and he knows what criminals can do, and big organized criminals. So, he starts to realize, “Oh, man, I’m in some dangerous territory.” Then his family’s involved in it, too. That gets to the heart of it.

MF: Finally, can you talk about Frank’s reluctant partnership with CIA agent Sidney and what it was like working on that relationship with actress Haley Bennett?

JC: Well, Hayley bought a great, like a mist in terms of you couldn’t tell where she’s at. You know, I wanted to hold her, but then the next minute I feared her. You feel like with Frank, you’re trying to work out what her involvement is, what she is hiding, and then you’re also aware that she’s super dangerous. Even though she’s an alone operative, an alone agent and a woman in this foreign place, there’s something about the way she operates. She makes you lean into her and frank leans into her, and then he needs her as well. You just you realize he’s on a lake of ice, with her as well, too.

    • LaKeith Stanfield, Jason Clarke, Trevante Rhodes and Sam Claflin will star in ‘F.A.S.T.’.
    • Taylor Sheridan wrote the script.
    • Warner Bros. is backing the movie.

Before he was known as the creator of half the TV series on our screens these days (many spun off from his hugely successful ‘Yellowstone’), Taylor Sheridan was an actor who made the leap to screenwriting with the likes of ‘Sicario’.

He’s back in gritty, big screen action thriller territory called ‘F.A.S.T.’ and the movie has locked in more of its cast.

The Hollywood Reporter has learned that LaKeith Stanfield (‘Sorry to Bother You’), Jason Clarke (‘Zero Dark Thirty’), Trevante Rhodes (‘Moonlight’) and Sam Claflin (‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’) will join the ensemble, which is being led by ‘1923’s Brandon Sklenar.

Sheridan’s new script concerns a former special forces commando (Sklenar), down on his luck after he returns Stateside, who is tapped by the DEA to lead a black op strike team against CIA-protected drug dealers in his town.

The quartet are playing a range of roles, from DEA agents to the commando’s former Delta Force colleagues. And they’re not the only ones boarding the movie, as ‘Succession’s Juliana Canfield is also in the cast.

Sheridan is keeping this one in the ‘Yellowstone’ spin-off family –– Ben Richardson, a veteran cinematographer who has directed multiple episodes of ‘1923’, will make his feature directorial debut with the movie.

Production is scheduled to kick off later this month.

What else are the new cast members working on?

LaKeith Stanfield in 'The Changeling,' now streaming on Apple TV+.

Stanfield will be seen in the upcoming likes of ‘Roofman’ and ‘Die My Love’. He’s also in the cast for Shane Black’s ‘Play Dirty’ and Al Pacino-led Shakespeare adaptation ‘Lear Rex’.

Clarke is starring for his ‘Zero Dark Thirty’ director Kathryn Bigelow in ‘A House of Dynamite’ and Apple TV+’s ‘The Last Frontier’.

Rhodes was most recently seen in ‘My Fault’ and ‘Candy Cane Lane’ and ‘F.A.S.T.’ will be his next gig.

Claflin has Harlan Coben TV miniseries ‘Lazarus’ on the way, and another mystery thriller show called ‘Vanished’.

And Canfield is attached to ‘Everlasting Yea!’, the based-on-truth story of the Crafts, following their rise to fame in the Abolitionist movement after their escape from slavery.

When will ‘F.A.S.T.’ be in theaters?

You might think that any project Sheridan generates these days would be snapped up by Paramount, whose streaming service hosts the various ‘Yellowstone’ series and his other shows, but ‘F.A.S.T.’ is instead under Warner Bros.’ banner.

The studio has penciled in an April 23rd, 2027 release date for the new action thriller.

  • Where To Watch Christopher Nolan’s Blockbuster Hit ‘Oppenheimer’

(L to R) Cillian Murphy (as J. Robert Oppenheimer) and writer, director, and producer Christopher Nolan on the set of ‘Oppenheimer.’

Christopher Nolan’s historical biopic was not only a box-office powerhouse but also delivered compelling performances and stunning visuals.

The film chronics J. Robert Oppenheimer‘s career from the beginning of his studies to his role in the Manhattan Project to the 1954 security hearing. The film used color to differentiate between Oppenheimer’s point of view and Lewis Strauss’ point of view – with color representing Oppenheimer and black and white for Strauss. The difference in color also depicts their personality, where Oppenheimer sees the world in bright colors, while Strauss sees it in black and white.

The official synopsis for ‘Oppenheimer’ is below:

“During World War II, Lt. Gen. Leslie Groves Jr. appoints physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer to work on the top-secret Manhattan Project. Oppenheimer and a team of scientists spend years developing and designing the atomic bomb. Their work comes to fruition on July 16, 1945, as they witness the world’s first nuclear explosion, forever changing the course of history.”

The film did not use any CGI or VFX to recreate the Trinity Test blast. As we saw with Nolan’s 2020 film ‘Tenet’, the director has always had a knack for creating realistic and explosive moments on film with practical effects. To recreate the atomic bomb detonation, Nolan worked with cinematographer Hoyte Van Hoytema to capture the explosion on film.

Working closely with special effects supervisor Scott Fisher and visual effects supervisor Andrew Jackson, they first ran tests by dropping silver particles in an aquarium.

“We built aquariums with powers in it. We dropped silver particles in it. We had molded metallic balloons which were lit up from the inside. We had things slamming and smashing into one another, such as ping-pong balls, or just had objects spinning,” said Van Hoytema.

The explosion was captured in in close-up at variable frame rates, combined with Van Joytema’s IMAX cinematography which filled the screen with an image that is both beautiful and deadly. When this moment is played in the theaters, the film goes silent as the detonation flashes before the deafening blast shakes and resonates in everyone’s core.
