    Premiering on Apple TV+ beginning March 18th is the new drama series ‘WeCrashed,’ which was created by Lee Eisenberg (‘Bad Teacher’) and Drew Crevello, and directed by John Requa (‘Crazy, Stupid, Love’) and Glenn Ficarra (‘Focus’).

    The series stars Oscar winner Jared Leto (‘Dallas Buyers Club’) as Adam Neumann, co-founder of WeWork, and Oscar winner Anne Hathaway (‘Les Misérables’) as his wife, Rebekah Neumann. The series follows the rise and fall of WeWork, one of the world’s most valuable startups at the time.

    In addition to Leto and Hathaway, the series also features America Ferrera (‘End of Watch’), Kyle Marvin (‘The Climb’), O.T. Fagbenie (‘Black Widow’), and Anthony Edwards (‘Top Gun’).

    Moviefone: To begin with, can you talk about your approach to portraying Rebekah Neumann in this series?

    Anne Hathaway: Well, thank you very much. It was fun. I did the same amount of work that I always do preparing a character. The fact that I had a voice recording of Rebekah and that she’s a real person definitely helped in terms of giving me an aim for what I wanted the voice to sound like. But I have to say she didn’t drop in until I met Adam Neumann, played by Jared Leto. There was something about the strength of their relationship and the love story that we were trying to tell that she came alive inside of me when her partner was there. That was really cool and felt very right for who they are.

    MF: Can you talk about the process of fleshing out the character of Rebekah Neumann’s backstory in order to figure out who she was at the time that this story takes place?

    AH: Well, I worked with an amazing researcher who I work with on different projects called Amy Hammond. I worked with Amy for the first time on ‘Les Misérables.’ Every time I get the opportunity to work with her, I find that it just raises everyone’s game on the project. She did at a lot of background information.

    Not a lot about Rebekah is known. So, I made sure I really understood her world and the world that she came up in and what would’ve been normal for her, that maybe is not the same as the way I was brought up. To understand that certain things that might seem unusual to most of us, to her, might not have been remarkable, because my goal with playing this woman was not to judge her, but to understand her.

    That research really helped me get insight into her. I also took a lot of the interviews that she gave, where she speaks very openly about her spirituality and the books that have had a huge influence on her. I made sure that I read those too.

    MF: Finally, the series really focuses on the relationship between Adam and Rebekah Neumann. Can you talk about developing the dynamic of that relationship with Jared Leto?

    AH: You would think that we sat down, and we had meetings and we strategized about how to do this love story, but the truth is he’s just a really fantastic actor and it just sort of happened. He came in and I just believed everything that he was, and I was in my character as well. It was just there, there was just this chemistry that I think exists between Adam and Rebekah in real life. So, we just kind of tapped into it. Then Jared and I, we never really talked about it. There was never a strategy to it, but we just kind of kept it going, you know?

    Every once in a while, we would check in over text and I was just really grateful. It was a really positive, crazy, fun experience. Whenever we would kind of come up for air and check in with each other, it was just always, “I’m so grateful to be doing this with you. I’m having such a great time.” So, we just kind of supported Adam and Rebekah’s love by keeping it very loving between the two of us.

    Moviefone: To begin with, is there a scene in ‘WeCrashed’ that you shot that is completely different than the way it was written in the script, that you were able to make better on the day of filming?

    Jared Leto: Well, I don’t know how brilliant it is, but the food fight wasn’t scripted at all. I think it’s in the show. There was one point we were in a boardroom meeting, and I just, for some reason, I looked over at Kyle and I just had this instinct to start throwing the food, the platters, the stuff, and that we were in such a crazy moment of abandon and energy. I looked at his face, then at the food. He looked at me, and we just started hocking the food. I think at one point there was a salami flat on his eyeball, but it was quite unexpected and fun.

    MF: Can you talk about your approach to playing Adam Neumann and how you discovered the voice for the character?

    JL: That’s a great thing about telling such a modern story. There was so much material. I was really just buried in it. So, I love that. I love the research. I love to learn. I’m fascinated by the characters that I plan and being part of this was really fun because there was so much to draw from including incredible podcasts, and a couple of books. There’s a documentary, there’s all kinds of stuff, and I was just buried in it. I also worked with a great team of Israeli people developing the accent and the voice. The voice is a really important part of who he is, who he was, and how he communicated his ideas and he interacted with people.

    I love a weird start. When I’m on set and especially on ‘WeCrashed,’ I often try to break scenes, you know? You try and fail because from those moments, you can build back together something with an enormous amount of truth and magic. So, it’s always good to start off with something quite a little broken.

    MF: Finally, when you break a scene like that, are you doing it because you want to see what you can get out of the other actor, or because you want to see what you can do differently in that moment?

    JL: It’s a very astute and smart question. Sometimes both. Sometimes if a scene’s not working, you could try that sometimes. I always just think it’s a good habit in general, but to surprise yourself is a beautiful thing, too.

  • Final ‘Morbius’ Trailer is Full of Action

    Even accounting for pandemic delays and other schedule quirks, it’s really beginning to feel like Jared Leto is in a big prosthetics phase. Between ‘House of Gucci’, upcoming TV series ‘WeCrashed’ and ‘Morbius’, he’s up for changing his appearance in big way. And talking of the living vampire, the final trailer for the Sony/Marvel film is now online.

    Leto here is Dr. Michael Morbius. Dangerously ill with a rare blood disorder and determined to save others suffering his same fate, the troubled medic attempts a desperate gamble. While at first it seems to be a radical success, a darkness inside him is unleashed. Will good override evil – or will Morbius succumb to his mysterious new urges?

    And to put it more specifically, his research into far flung blood possibilities and natural cures brings him into contact with vampirism, leading to a shocking transformation. Soon, he’s gifted with enhanced speed and strength (plus a variety of other abilities, including a version of sonar and flight, after a fashion) but cursed with a driving desire to hunt down and consume blood.

    Created by Roy Thomas and Gil Kane and first arriving in the pages of “The Amazing Spider-Man” in 1971, Morbius was considered as a potential character when Artisan bought the rights to several Marvel titles as possible movies, but nothing came of it.

    With Sony taking on the character, it has been in development for a while, but finally came to fruition under director Daniel Espinosa (‘Life’), alongside writers Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless.

    Though Sony has largely kept its non-MCU Marvel movies away from direct connections with the Disney side of things, we’re increasingly seeing connections – Michael Keaton’s Adrian Toomes, AKA Spider-Man: Homecoming’s Vulture, who here appears to be encouraging Morbius to become who he’s supposed to be. Which, we can only assume, means a villain.

    Likewise, Matt Smith’s Loxias Crown (another character drawn from the pages of Marvel’s comics output), a vampire-linked baddie who wants Morbius to join his crusade against us more normal, living folk.

    Also in the cast is Jared Harris, playing Emil Nikols, another character from the Morbius comics, who appears to be on exposition duty here.

    Adria Arjona is Martin Bancroft, also linked to Morbius, while Tyrese Gibson and Al Madrigal are more on the comic relief front at times, as the law enforcement types tracking Morbius’ activity.

    And there are clear links to ‘Venom’, Sony looking to build out its own corner of Marvel adaptations. The biggest question here is whether ‘Morbius’ will pull off the same trick – bringing the character to screens while overcoming potentially negative critical reactions to find an audience willing to embrace a wilder side of Marvel.

    The various pandemic-related release shifts haven’t helped assuage those concerns, and questions arose as to why Sony didn’t move the movie back closer to ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ to coast off the success of that release.

    Still, with claws crossed, the movie will be vamping its way into theaters from April 1.

  • REVIEW: ‘House of Gucci’ has great performances, but feels too long

    Opening in theaters on November 24th is Oscar winning director Ridley Scott’s latest film, ‘House of Gucci,’ which chronicles the rise and fall of the Gucci family and the empire they created and lost. The movie features an incredible cast all delivering their best, including Lady Gaga (‘A Star is Born’), Adam Driver (‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’), Salma Hayek (‘Eternals’), and Academy Award winners Jared Leto (‘Dallas Buyers Club’), Jeremy Irons (‘Reversal of Fortune’) and Al Pacino (‘The Godfather’). The result is an over-sized movie with a strong story and truly winning performances from the cast including Gaga and Leto but suffers in the pacing and falls apart in the third act.

    The film begins by introducing us to Patrizia Reggiani (Gaga), who works for her father’s trucking business in Italy. One night at a party, she meets Maurizio Gucci (Driver), the heir to the famous Italian luxury label dynasty. Patrizia is relentless in her pursuit of Maurizio, and eventually they fall in love, but he has no interest in his family’s business. Maurizio soon introduces Patrizia to his estranged father Rodolfo Gucci (Irons), who believes Patrizia just wants the Gucci money and forbids his son to marry her. After their wedding, the couple begin spending time with Rodolfo’s brother, Aldo Gucci (Pacino), who encourages Maurizio to join the family business, much to Patrizia’s delight. She then orchestrates a way for her husband to take over the company from Aldo, with the help of his incompetent cousin and Aldo’s son, Paolo (Leto). But Maurizio and Patrizia get greedy for power and betray Paolo in the process. Eventually, their marriage begins to fall apart, and the Gucci brand falls in financial trouble. Maurizio has an affair and leaves Patrizia, who turns to her psychic (Hayek) for help finding someone to murder her husband.

    ‘House of Gucci’ marks the second film directed this year by Oscar winner Ridley Scott after ‘The Last Duel.’ That’s a pretty amazing accomplishment for anyone, especially an eighty-three-year-old filmmaker. It’s no question that Ridley Scott is one of the greatest directors of his generation, with a resume that includes ‘Alien,’ ‘Blade Runner,’ ‘Thelma & Louise,’ and ‘Gladiator.’ But for every ‘Black Hawk Down’ or ‘The Martian’ there is a ‘Robin Hood’ or ‘Exodus: Gods and Kings,’ and the prolific director can be hit or miss to say the least. He’s taken a crack at the crime thriller genre before with mixed success, again, for every ‘American Gangster’ there is ‘The Counselor.’ But this time around, Scott scores pretty well by turning the Gucci family into the Corleone’s, and it works… for the most part.

    However, the biggest issue I have with the film is the length, as it would have benefited from a tighter run time and better pacing towards the end. Since it is a true story, it can be easily googled, so trying to draw on the drama doesn’t really work because we know Patrizia will kill Maurizio in the end. Where the film, as well as Scott and the cast, shine is in setting up the inevitable and really diving into their relationship and the family business. Scott also sets the tone for the decadent 80s quite well with appropriate music like The Eurhythmics and Blondie, as well as the clothes, cars, and over-the-top lifestyles. Scott also has a sharp eye for performances, and he got stellar ones out of his four lead actors.

    Jeremey Irons and Salma Hayek are both fine in the film, but have very small roles and honestly do not do a lot. I’m surprised actors of their caliber would even take roles that small, but undoubtfully it was just for the chance to work with the celebrated director. Al Pacino is very strong as Aldo Gucci and even though he does terrible things, you feel a great sympathy for him at the end, thanks to his performance. After a terrific performance in ‘The Irishman,’ it seems like the legendary actor has another chance at a Best Supporting nom this year. But the actor who is definitely getting a nomination for best supporting actor is Jared Leto for his transcending work as Paolo. The actor is completely unrecognizable, which the Academy loves, and his quite funny playing the sad and pathetic character. Much like Pacino, Leto draws on great sympathy from the audience for his bumbling character and creates a singular performance all to his own. I have no idea if the real Paolo Gucci looked anything like Leto does in the film, but the performance is original and fun.

    Adam Driver gives an almost thankless performance in the film, playing opposite Lady Gaga, but he is definitely the anchor of the movie. Driver gives a quiet performance but is completely believable as a man with good intentions wrapped up in a world of greed and power. His accent is excellent, and he also gives a performance worthy of at least Oscar attention. But unfortunately for Driver, all eyes are on Lady Gaga, who shares almost every scene with Driver in the film and can’t help stealing most of them. Gaga gives a completely commanding performance as Patrizia and reminded me of Sharon Stone in ‘Casino.’ She creates a character that you understand and relate to, even if you can’t relate to many of her actions. It would be easy for the movie to paint Patrizia as a “gold digger,” but Gaga’s performance elevates that, so you really believe that she truly loved Maurizio, even if the money was also enticing. In my opinion, Lady Gaga is 2 for 2 after her performance in ‘A Star is Born,’ and deserves another nomination this year.

    In the end, ‘House of Gucci’ is certainly no ‘Godfather,’ but it is a decent modern-day story about the rise and fall of a family empire filled with all the drama, passion, greed and betrayal that comes with it. Ridley Scott delivers a strong film that is too long and drags in the third act but is saved by top-notch performances from the accomplished cast, especially Lady Gaga and Jared Leto.

  • How Does ‘Morbius’ Fit Into the MCU?

    Last week, the new ‘Morbius‘ trailer dropped, which is the upcoming Sony/Marvel movie based on the popular Spider-Man villain. Directed by Daniel Espinosa (‘Safe House’) and set for release on January 28, 2022, the film tells the story of Michael Morbius (Oscar winner Jared Leto), a brilliant scientist with a rare blood disease who takes a dangerous cure that gives him a form of vampirism. In addition to Leto, the movie also features Matt Smith (‘Doctor Who’), Adria Arjona (‘Triple Frontier’), Tyrese Gibson (‘F9’) and Jared Harris (‘Foundation’).

    Since the film is based on a Spider-Man character, which is owned by Sony and not Disney, most assumed that ‘Morbius’ would be set in the ‘Venom’ universe, or even its own, but the new trailer certainly puts both of those options in question. Let’s take a look at all the different options, and the evidence in the trailer that points in those directions.

    EVIDENCE FOR THE ‘VENOM’ UNIVERSE

    There are several very clear references to Venom in the trailer. The clearest one comes at the very end when Leto’s Morbius attacks an unsuspecting victim and says Venom’s catchphrase, “I Am Venom.” Another clue comes halfway through the trailer when an FBI agent mentions to Gibson’s Agent Simon Stroud, “We haven’t had anything like this since that thing in San Francisco,” which seems to point to the events of ‘Venom,’ ‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage,’ or both. While the “San Francisco” line could just be an Easter Egg, the “I am Venom” line seems like pretty concrete evidence that the movie is set in Venom’s world… or at least “a” Venom’s world.

    EVIDENCE FOR THE MCU

    When the first teaser trailer for ‘Morbius’ dropped earlier this year, fans were shocked to see that Michael Keaton makes an appearance as his character, Adrian Toomes/Vulture, from the MCU’s ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming.’ The scene is brief and involves the two Spidey villains bumping into each other while they are both in custody of the authorities. This scene, at least on the surface, points to the idea that Morbius, at least partially, will take place in the MCU.

    If this scene takes place towards the end of the movie, or is even from an end-credit scene, then it is possible the film starts in its own universe but that at some point Morbius crosses over to the MCU somehow. It’s not unheard of, spoiler alert for ‘Venom: There Will Be Carnage,’ as that is exactly what Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock does at the end of that film.

    There is even more evidence, as in one scene Morbius walks by a wanted poster that has a picture of Spider-Man, graffitied with the word “murderer,” which follows story threads from ‘Spider-Man: Far from Home.’ But there is one problem with that theory…

    EVIDENCE FOR THE TOBEY MAGUIRE UNIVERSE

    While the Spider-Man wanted poster fits with what we know about the upcoming ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home,’ it’s not Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in the picture! Eagle-eyed viewers will notice that this Spider-Man closer resembles Tobey Maguire’s version from the Sam Raimi films. Now of course there have been rumors that with the multiverse plot involved in ‘No Way Home,’ Tobey Maguire and/or Andrew Garfield could make an appearance. We know that two of each of their villains, Doc Ock and Sandman, and Lizard and Electro, respectively will make appearances. So, if Maguire in fact is going to appear in ‘No Way Home,’ and there is no real evidence at this point to believe that he will, it would make sense to sprinkle some of the character throughout ‘Morbius.’

    There is also more evidence pointing to the Raimi films, as the Daily Bugle logo seen on a newspaper in a quick shot in the trailer is the logo from the Tobey Maguire movies and not the Fox News type logo used in the MCU films. But wait, there are also some Easter eggs on the newspaper that would lead one to believe that the film is set in the same universe as the Andrew Garfield movies!

    EVIDENCE FOR THE ANDREW GARFIELD UNIVERSE

    If you look closely at the newspaper, you will see two headlines, one about the Rhino, and one that mentions Black Cat. The only live-action Spider-Man film to ever feature the Rhino was ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2,’ which also included an appearance from Felicity Jones as Felisha Hardy, the character that becomes the Black Cat in the comics.

    But that’s not the only clue pointing to the Andrew Garfield films, as there is a wide-shot of the city’s skyline and in the background, you can spot a building with the Oscorp logo on it. It is clearly the same logo used for the company in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ movies, leading to more speculation that we could see Garfield put on the costume again in the future.

    FINAL CONCLUSIONS

    But what does this all mean? I think the point is that we are not supposed to know, and it may not even be made clear in ‘Morbius’ itself. We know that Sony, who owns the film rights to all Spider-Man characters, and Disney, which owns Marvel Studios, who owns the film rights to all the other Marvel characters, almost had a split after the success of ‘Spider-Man: Far from Home’ but eventually came to an agreement. What exactly that agreement was we don’t really know, but assumingly it allowed Sony to integrate some of their other Marvel characters into the MCU, like Venom, for example, and Disney obviously lent out Michael Keaton’s services as well.

    Knowing that ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home,’ at least in some way, will involve the multiverse, it makes sense to drop hints to all of the different cinematic Spider-Men in ‘Morbius,’ even if it’s being released after the MCU’s next installment. My guess is that the film itself will play fast and loose with whichever universe it is actually set in, and while I don’t think we should expect to see Leto in ‘No Way Home,’ I think Sony is definitely setting the stage so that the character could appear in the MCU at some point down the line. Not to mention that with a new Blade film starring Mahershala Ali on the horizon, as recently teased in ‘Eternals,’ there is no telling what type of crossovers we could see in the future.

  • ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Poster Hints at Multiple Villains

    Spider-Man fans already had a lot of expectations for the upcoming ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home,’ and thanks to the first official poster for the movie, which earlier this week, they now expect to see the Green Goblin return as well!

    The new movie will deal with the aftermath of Peter’s secret identity going public at the end of ‘Spider-Man: Far from Home,’ thanks to Mysterio, and having Doctor Strange cast a spell so the world forgets who Spider-Man really is. However, we know from the recent trailer that things will go terribly wrong and tear a rift in the multiverse, allowing villains from the Sam Raimi and Marc Webb movies to also appear.

    Conformation of this was given at the beginning of production when it was announced that Jamie Foxx would be reprising his role as Electro from ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2.’ Then, earlier this year, actor Alfred Molina himself confirmed in an interview with Variety that he would also be reprising his role as Doctor Octopus from ‘Spider-Man 2.’ This led to countless rumors about the film, including that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield may also return, playing their respective versions of Peter Parker.

    Then, just last week, news hit that Empire Magazine was running an article on the film in their December issue that confirmed Rhys Ifans and Thomas Haden Church returning in ‘No Way Home’ as the Lizard and the Sandman, their characters from ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ and ‘Spider-Man 3,’ respectively. Not to mention, and Spoiler Alert for ‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage,’ but Tom Hardy’s title character is also now running around in the MCU. Which leaves the Green Goblin, whose pumpkin bombs could be seen in the trailer, but who’s image has been kept secret until now.

    If you zoom into the background of the new poster, you can see a small image that looks to be the Willem Dafoe version of the character from Spider-Man. While the Green Goblin’s voice can be heard in the trailer, it is difficult to know if it is really Dafoe or not. Although the new poster would indicate that this version of Norman Osborne will appear in the movie, there still has been no official confirmation from Sony or Marvel that the Oscar-nominated actor will be reprising his role. Fans will also notice that the new poster teases the other three previously announced returning franchise villains, with Doc Ock’s metal tentacles, yellow lightning to represent Electro, and a sandstorm for the Sandman featuring prominent in the poster.

    But like a mirage, many online fans think that they have spotted other potential villains hidden in the poster. If you look at the Green Goblin image, there are two pieces of debris on either side of him, and some fans think that those tiny images are of James Franco and Dane DeHaan’s Green Goblins from ‘Spider-Man 3’ and ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2,’ respectively. When I zoomed in on the poster, it just looked like debris to me, and there is absolutely nothing indicating that Franco or DeHaan will be reprising their previous roles in the upcoming film.

    But the online guessing game doesn’t stop there, as some people think that the debris in the background near the edge of Spider-Man’s right hand is the Vulture flying in the background. Some online have even said that the Lizard is hidden in the bottom right hand corner, and that Rhino’s horn can be seen just below Spider-Man’s knee, but I don’t buy that one as it just looks like a metal spike poking out of concrete. But the wildest online theory is that the metallic tentacle we see on the right hand side of the poster is not Alfred Molina’s character, but instead Kathryn Hahn’s Doctor Olivia Octavius from ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,’ which seems completely made-up if you ask me.

    The poster was dropped on the film’s official Twitter account, which even encouraged fans to use their “Spidey Senses” to look for “details,” so they clearly want fans guessing. But I think with many fans trying to find out everything they can about the upcoming movie, they are beginning to see things that are just not there, which may be exactly what Disney wants. I can’t remember a time in the past when a simple poster for a movie has caused so much excitement and online debate. I only fear that fans now expect far too much from ‘No Way Home,’ and anything short of all three cinematic Spider-Man fighting off a multiverse version of the Sinister Six will leave hardcore viewers disappointed.

    Now, assuming that Venom is not one of the Sinister Six, as he wasn’t in the comics, and also assuming that the Sinister Six is featured in the new movie at all, that still leaves one-member unknown. It likely won’t be Jared Leto’s Morbius, as his solo film is not set to release until January, but it could be Michael Keaton’s Vulture, who is also set to appear in Morbius. And let’s not forget Jake Gyllenhaal’s Mysterio, although he apparently died in ‘Far From Home,’ the character is best known for his illusions, so anything is possible.

    Vulture, or possibly Mysterio, would make the most sense to me to actually be the sixth member of the Sinister Six, if they do in fact appear. But if Green Goblin, Doc Ock, Sandman, Lizard, and Electro are in the movie, that would represent one villain from every non-MCU Spider-Man movie, and I would think that Marvel Studios would want at least one of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man villains from the MCU to appear as well.

    With Benedict Cumberbatch and Benedict Wong already confirmed to reprise their Doctor Strange roles in ‘No Way Home,’ as well as Oscar winner J.K. Simmons returning as J. Jonah Jameson, the cast is already packed with other MCU characters. So, with the exception of Molina’s Doc Ock, and maybe the Green Goblin, I wouldn’t expect any of the villains from previous Spider-Man movies to have terribly large roles, as they will most likely appear as cameos towards the end of the movie, which is rumored to run well over two and a half hours.

    “Fast and Furious” star Tyrese Gibson is driving over to the Spider-Man villain spinoff “Morbius.”

    The actor is in talks to join Sony’s comic book movie, which features Jared Leto as the titular villain.

    The story centers on Dr. Michael Morbius, a biochemist who attempts to cure himself of a fatal blood disease with a serum derived from bats. The treatment has disastrous results, turning him into the antihero Morbius, who has all the qualities of a vampire — including fangs, super strength, and a taste for human blood.

    Gibson will play an FBI agent trying to hunt down Morbius.

    The cast also includes Matt Smith as the main antagonist, Loxias Crown, who also suffers from the same blood disease; Adria Arjona as the love interest; and Jared Harris as Morbius’ mentor.

    Sony has been developing its Spidey-verse for some time and found tremendous success with last year’s “Venom.” The studio is also working on “Silver and Black,” featuring Silver Sable and Black Cat. Their universe does not overlap with the Spider-Man played by Tom Holland in the Marvel movies.

    Gibson is set to begin filming the next “Fast and Furious” movie this summer. He is also producing and starring in an upcoming biopic about Philadelphia-born R&B singer/songwriter Teddy Pendergrass.

    After the success of “Venom,” Sony is continuing to expand its “Spider-Man” spinoff universe, with another film set to follow a villain who antagonizes the webslinger in the comics. And now, the new movie’s titular star has revealed a mysterious first image from the set.

    Jared Leto, who is set to headline “Morbius,” took to Instagram on Tuesday to share a snap marking the beginning of production.

    In the image, Leto can be seen brooding behind a clapperboard, with only his eyes and what appears to be long hair visible. That’s obviously not a lot to go on (real talk: it’s basically nothing), but it’s still exciting to get a glimpse behind the scenes on the project, which has a pretty twisted premise — and thus seems like a perfect fit for the notoriously oddball Leto.

    The film follows Dr. Michael Morbius (Leto), a biochemist who attempts to cure his own fatal blood disease using an experimental treatment derived from the DNA of vampire bats. Instead, he turns himself into Morbius, a.k.a. the Living Vampire, who has fangs, super strength, and an insatiable lust for human blood.

    “Morbius” also stars “The Crown” alum Matt Smith, and is directed by Daniel Espinosa (“Life”). It’s scheduled to hit theaters on July 31, 2020.

    The actor, who played the Joker in “Suicide Squad,” has signed on to star in “Morbius,” a spinoff in Sony’s “Spider-Man” universe that includes the upcoming “Venom.”

    The project comes from director Daniel Espinosa (“Life”) and writers Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama (who created Netflix’s “Lost in Space”).

    Leto will play Dr. Michael Morbius, a biochemist who attempts to cure himself of a fatal blood disease with a serum derived from bats. The treatment has disastrous results, turning him into the anti-hero Morbius who has all the qualities of a vampire — including fangs, super strength, and a taste for human blood. In the comics, the character was often an an antagonist to Spider-Man, though he evolved into a heroic figure over time.

    Sony has been developing its Spidey-verse for some time. Along with “Venom,” they are working on “Silver and Black,” featuring Silver Sable and Black Cat. This universe does not overlap with the Spider-Man played by Tom Holland in the Marvel movies.

    Meanwhile, Leto will also appear as the Joker again in “Suicide Squad 2” and there has been talk of Joker solo movies.

    The Oscar-winning actor is set to star as Hugh Hefner in Brett Ratner’s planned biopic, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The Playboy mogul died last week at the age of 91

    “Jared is an old friend,” Ratner said. “When he heard I got the rights to Hef’s story, he told me, ‘I want to play him. I want to understand him.’ And I really believe Jared can do it. He’s one of the great actors of today.”

    The director even invited Leto to the famed Playboy Mansion for the premiere of Amazon’s documentary series “American Playboy: The Hugh Hefner Story.” But due to Hefner’s failing health, Leto was unable to meet the controversial icon.

    Ratner isn’t worried. “There’s enough footage on Hef out there that Jared will be able to get as much information as he wants,” he said.

    The project has been in development for almost a decade, with a period of time when the late Jerry Weintraub held the rights. Now, Ratner has them back and has a big vision: “My goal is to do the motion picture as an event.”
