  • Antoine Fuqua Directing Michael Jackson Biopic

When Antoine Fuqua took on directing ‘Emancipation’ a couple of years ago, he probably imagined a film that could attract awards attention while sensitively but honestly tackling a difficult subject.

That movie’s release was thrown into chaos when star Will Smith marched on to the stage at the Oscars last year and slapped Chris Rock after the comedian and actor joked about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.

So you might imagine that Fuqua––who has since moved onto ‘The Equalizer 3’––would look to avoid controversy in future films. Yet today, Deadline reports that Fuqua will direct Michael Jackson biopic ‘Michael’ for producer Graham King and writer John Logan.

Jackson surely needs little introduction. Raised along with his singer siblings by domineering father Joe Jackson, the Indiana native first rose to fame performing with his family as The Jackson 5.

Even beyond the likes of sister Janet, Michael rose to become a huge star, famous for hit songs and dance moves such as the Moonwalk. His videos boasted expensive production values (and directors such as John Landis) and he amassed a huge fortune.

Yet his life was also marked by chaotic decisions, a serious injury plastic surgery on the set of a Pepsi commercial in 1984 that led to him starting to take painkillers, and pedophile accusations that dogged his later years up to his death in 2009 at age 50, from cardiac arrest caused by a cocktail of sedatives.

“The first films of my career were music videos, and I still feel that combining film and music are a deep part of who I am,” says Fuqua in a statement. “For me, there is no artist with the power, the charisma, and the sheer musical genius of Michael Jackson. I was influenced to make music videos by watching his work––the first Black artist to play in heavy rotation on MTV. His music and those images are part of my worldview, and the chance to tell his story on the screen alongside his music was irresistible.”

“Antoine’s films provide personal perspectives of larger–than–life characters that continuously captivate global audiences,” adds King. “I’m confident that Antoine will make an exceptional and compelling film that will both celebrate and give profound new insights into the life of the King of Pop.”

King and Logan have been trying to put this one together for a few years now, looking to score the same level of success that ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ enjoyed, even though this promises to generate plenty of controversy, especially given the lawsuits and molestation accusations that swirled around the singer’s later life.

Given that filming is planned for later this year, the search is surely already on for an actor––or actors, if it aims to cover his life––to play Jackson. Fuqua has recruited regular collaborator, cinematographer Robert Richardson to work on this one.

Lionsgate is backing the movie, but there’s naturally no word yet on when it might arrive on screens. ‘The Equalizer 3’, meanwhile, will be in theaters on September 1st.

  • Justin Timberlake Confirmed for Super Bowl 2018 & Janet Jackson Fans Want ‘Justice’

Super Bowl XXXVIII: Halftime ShowJustin Timberlake is returning to the Super Bowl after accidentally initiating Nipplegate in 2004.

Timberlake was rumored, and now confirmed, to be performing in the 2018 Super Bowl halftime show, and many fans are upset, because … what about Janet Jackson? Jackson’s career took the brunt of the heat when Timberlake exposed her nipple to millions of fans.

According to NPR, that “wardrobe malfunction” of 2004 earned Jackson a lifetime Super Bowl ban “and sharp criticism that never seemed to extend towards Timberlake.” The hypocrisy has not been forgotten. Many fans see Timberlake’s return to Super Bowl as a slap to Jackson, and want #JusticeforJanet.

The 52nd Super Bowl game will take place in Minneapolis on Sunday, February 4.

  • Janet Jackson Gives Birth to First Child, Eissa, at Age 50

Giorgio Armani - Front Row - MFW F/W 2013Janet Jackson is starting 2017 with the most principle of pleasures: motherhood! The 50-year-old singer/actress welcomed her first child today (Tuesday, Jan. 3). Her rep confirmed the happy news to People, sharing the following statement:

“Janet Jackson and husband Wissam Al Mana are thrilled to welcome their new son Eissa Al Mana into the world. Janet had a stress-free healthy delivery and is resting comfortably.”

What a blessing — borderline miracle — for the new year. (The name Eissa is reportedly pronounced like EYE-ssa.) News broke last spring that Jackson and her Qatari businessman husband were expecting their first child. Jackson postponed her Unbreakable World Tour to focus on her family, and she managed to keep the months of her pregnancy pretty private. A source told People in September that Janet was “super excited about her pregnancy” and doing “extremely well” up to that point. “She actually feels very good about everything.” Good for her. She must’ve done something right, probably more than one something, to have such smooth sailing.

In addition to being one of the bestselling artists of our time, Jackson is also an actress known from the TV series “Fame,” “Diff’rent Strokes,” and “Good Times,” plus the movies “Poetic Justice,” “Nutty Professor II: The Klumps,” “For Colored Girls,” and both “Why Did I Get Married?” and its sequel.

Congrats to this happy, healthy family, and best wishes for the future.

  • Joseph Gordon-Levitt Returning to ‘Lip Sync Battle’ vs. Seth Rogen & Anthony Mackie

lip sync battle, joseph gordon-levitt, seth rogen, anthony mackieLip Sync Battle” crown again, and is teaming up with his “The Night Before” costars Seth Rogen and Anthony Mackie for an epic holiday special edition of the Spike show.

Gordon-Levitt, Rogen, and Mackie are set to throw down later this month, joining hosts LL Cool J and Chrissy Teigen for some holiday-themed debauchery, complete with Rogen playing a naughty Elf on the Shelf and an appearance from rappers Run-D.M.C., who perform (well, “perform,” since they’ll probably be lip syncing, too) their classic “Christmas in Hollis.” Other special guests are set to drop in, too.

But the real draw will be to see if Gordon-Levitt can once again claim “Lip Sync Battle” glory, following his The Tonight Show,” where he went head-to-head with Jimmy Fallon and Stephen Merchant. While Fallon granted both men the crown, audiences seemingly sided with Gordon-Levitt, and he’s not likely to leave the “Lip Sync Battle” stage this time without sole possession of the championship belt — even if he’s gotta dress in drag as Janet Jackson to do it.

Check out a preview of the fun below. The “Lip Sync Battle” holiday special airs on November 19 on Spike.
