8 Great Movie Presidents And 1 That Wasn’t

Hollywood likes high-stakes stories, so making a movie about a US President immediately fits that bill. We’ve put together a list of eight great movie Presidents that have done everything from balancing budgets to stopping alien invasions. And just by way of comparison, we’ve thrown in one president that maybe wasn’t so great. All of these movies are currently streaming, so pick your favorite movie President and give yourself an Executive Order to watch their movie.

    Dave Kovic: Dave (1993)

    Kevin Kline in 'Dave'
    Kevin Kline in ‘Dave’

“Hail to the Chief, he’s the one we all say hail to.” It’s no wonder Dave (Kevin Kline) is singing, since being a dead ringer for the sitting President is a pretty good side gig–especially when the President’s staff approaches you to work for the White House directly. But when the President suffers a stroke, Dave takes over the Oval Office and all the responsibilities that come with it–including being the husband of a very angry wife (Sigourney Weaver). Dave is charming, warm, and totally un-Presidential, so it’s no surprise that everyone ends up loving him.

    Thomas Whitmore: Independence Day (1996)

    Bill Pullman in 'Independence Day'
    Bill Pullman in ‘Independence Day’

Bill Pullman is the Prez in charge when the world gets invaded by pushy aliens who have a fondness for blowing up landmarks and people holding signs of welcome. He’s more of a rough-and-tumble guy, and even withstands a psychic attack from the aliens in Area 51. But once he knows their plan, he helps mobilize forces against them, and gives an unforgettable speech that is even more badass than how he hops into a fighter jet of his own right after wrapping it up.

James Marshall: Air Force One (1997)

Harrison Ford in 'Air Force One'
Harrison Ford in ‘Air Force One’

Harrison Ford, at a fancy dinner in Moscow, declares that the United States will not negotiate with terrorists, and that the capture of Russia’s dictator Ivan Radek (Gary Oldman) was just. That’s all it takes for Radek to enact his dastardly plan for his team to take over the President’s plane with himself, his staff, and his family still on it. As a Medal of Honor winner and veteran, Marshall is not one to back down from a fight. And even though the space on a plane is limited, somehow this movie manages to be a riveting cat and mouse game, with Marshall (and the writers of the screenplay) delivering one-liners that land with…well, the force of an explosion on Air Force One (too soon?).

Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho: Idiocracy (2006)

    Terry Crews in 'Idiocracy'
    Terry Crews in ‘Idiocracy’

Say what you will about President Camacho’s intellect, but man, can that guy wear a puffy red white and blue blouse. Terry Crews plays this President leading a troubled, dumb-as-rocks United States as they face a critical food shortage in 2505. Bleak times don’t stop Camacho from wowing the crowd with a State of the Union address, though, that we secretly hope is how they go down in 484 years. Or next year. Whatever.

Mays Gilliam: Head of State (2003)

Chris Rock in 'Head of State'
Chris Rock in ‘Head of State’

Plenty of people can get behind the idea of comedic genius Chris Rock being President–especially in the form of Mays Gilliam, a Washington D.C. alderman who turns hero and Democratic nominee for the highest office in the United States. Of course initially, the Dems thought they had already lost the race and chose Gilliam as a token candidate, but as soon as he starts spouting truths that the people want to hear, his campaign picks up steam, and audiences are left with rousing speeches yelling “That ain’t right!” on their couches.

James Sawyer: White House Down (2013)

Jamie Foxx in 'White House Down'
Jamie Foxx in ‘White House Down’

In the second Roland Emmerich-directed film on the list (the German fellow has a real thing for American patriotism), Jamie Foxx plays the President that terrorists are actively hunting within the White House walls. Only one man stands between them: the guy from Magic Mike (Channing Tatum). But Sawyer is no shrinking violet: he can scale elevator shafts, handle a rocket launcher, and keep any bad guy’s hands off his Jordans.

Matt Douglas & Russell Kramer: My Fellow Americans (1996)

James Garner and Jack Lemmon in 'My Fellow Americans'
James Garner and Jack Lemmon in ‘My Fellow Americans’

Two, two, two Presidents in one! Kramer (Jack Lemmon) and Douglas (James Garner) have a long-standing history of duking it out for the Presidency. As they seem to be entering the twilight of their lives, spending time writing books and doing pointless speaking engagements, Kramer is asked to investigate a series of bribes under code name “Olympia” as a favor. Well, no good deed goes unpunished. The plot keeps thickening and thickening, drawing in Douglas, and threatening both of their lives. The banter is off the charts in this one, as is the convoluted plot that has a surprising ending.

    Richard Nixon: Dick (1999)

    Dan Hedaya in 'Dick'
    Dan Hedaya in ‘Dick’

This film explores how Woodward (Will Ferrell) and Bernstein (Bruce McCulloch) “really” got all their inside information during the Watergate Scandal from two teens named Betsy (Kirsten Dunst) and Arlene (Michelle Williams). Every noteworthy event during that period of time in the administration, including Vietnam peace protests and the Nixon-Breznhev accord, were accidentally masterminded by these two girls who just liked walking the President’s dog and accidentally baked marijuana into their cookies. Dan Hedaya plays a great Richard Nixon, but the movie is much more about the two teens that bring him down in the name of what’s right. Since he was known as “Tricky Dick,” we stand by our choice.

  • Full Cast, Details Revealed for Pete Docter’s ‘Soul’

Full Cast, Details Revealed for Pete Docter’s ‘Soul’

    Pixar

Pete Docter, writer-director was on hand at D23 Expo to reveal details of his until-this-moment super secret project “Soul.” It sounds otherworldly and incredible, the story of a pair of souls making their way across the cosmic landscape. But guess what? We have details now! The movie will star Jamie Foxx and Tina Fey, alongside Phylicia Rashad, Daveed Diggs and Questlove! Also, it’ll feature music from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross along with Jon Baptiste.

    Pixar

As described by Docter, “Soul” is a metaphysical tale about what makes us human, where we come from, and what defines who we are … so, you know, it’s not exactly “Angry Birds 2.” Foxx plays a jazz musician who dies and his soul goes to the spirit realm, where he meets Fey’s soul and together they go on an adventure. It sounds bonkers and maybe the most ambitious animated feature ever.

We’ll update you with each and every detail we have from “Soul” before it arrives in theaters June 19, 2020.

  • Michael B. Jordan Legal Drama ‘Just Mercy’ Bumped Up Into Awards Season

Michael B. Jordan Legal Drama ‘Just Mercy’ Bumped Up Into Awards Season

    Warner Bros.

Warner Bros. just moved the “based on a true story” legal drama “Just Mercy” from January 2020 to December 2019, making it eligible for the 2019 awards season.

The film, which was originally set for a January 27 release, will now open in limited release on December 25.  That means star Michael B. Jordan and his Oscar-winning costars Brie Larson and Jamie Foxx just got added to everyone’s awards scoreboard.

The “Black Panther” and “Creed” star plays attorney Bryan Stevenson, founder and executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative. The film follows the case of death row inmate Walter McMillan (played by Jamie Foxx), who was convicted for a 1986 murder in Alabama.

It was Stevenson’s first case as an attorney — damn, this story is just made for awards season — and he proved that prosecution had suppressed evidence at the original trial.

Stevenson went on to write the book the film is based on, “Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption.”

Larson costars as Eva Ansley, who confounded EJI with Stevenson. Rounding out the cast: Tim Blake Nelson, Rafe Spall, Rob Morgan and O’Shea Jackson, Jr.

Jordan was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for “Fruitvale Station,” but has gotten no Oscar love so far.

“Just Mercy” will open wide on Jan. 10.

With “Game of Thrones” ending, Peter Dinklage is moving on from Westeros.

Dinklage, Michael Fassbender, and Jamie Foxx are in early talks to star in Mel Gibson’s remake of “The Wild Bunch,” according to Deadline.

Sam Peckinpah’s 1969 original told the story of an aging outlaw gang looking to pull off one final score. At the time, the film was controversial for its graphic depiction of violence, but was nominated for two Oscars, original screenplay and score.

Gibson co-wrote the screenplay with Bryan Bagby; it will be Gibson’s first directorial gig since 2016’s “Hacksaw Ridge,” which won two Oscars and was nominated for Best Picture and Director.

As an actor, Gibson has several projects right now in the Cannes market, including “Rothchild” opposite Shia LaBeouf and the dark holiday comedy “Fatman.”

Fassbender can next be seen reprising his role as Magneto in “Dark Phoenix” this summer. Foxx will play George Jefferson in ABC’s live tribute to “All in the Family” and “The Jeffersons” next week. And Dinklage will play Tyrion Lannister once last time in the series finale of “Game of Thrones” on Sunday.

Captain Marvel and Killmonger are teaming up! Sort of.

According to Variety, Brie Larson is in final negotiations to join the movie “Just Mercy,” alongside Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Foxx.

The film is based on the book “Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption,” telling the true story of Bryan Stevenson (Jordan), a gifted young lawyer fighting for equal justice in a flawed legal system.

Variety didn’t have any details on Larson’s role.

“Just Mercy” is set to start production next month in Atlanta. It’s directed by Destin Cretton, who just directed Brie Larson in “The Glass Castle.”

This is a busy time for both Brie Larson and Michael B. Jordan. He’s hot off “Black Panther,” and has “Creed II” coming out November 21. She headlines the next movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the highly anticipated “Captain Marvel,” which comes out March 8, 2019.

  • Jamie Foxx to Star in ‘Spawn’ Horror Reboot From Blumhouse

A comic character with one of the most twisted back stories imaginable is coming back to the big screen, this time with a mega star attached to tell his (mostly silent) tale.

Deadline reports that Jamie Foxx has signed on to star as the titular hero of “Spawn,” based on the comic series by Todd McFarlane. McFarlane is adapting his own work for the big screen, and will also direct the feature.

According to the creator, this version of “Spawn” (which previously inspired both an animated movie and a 1997 live-action feature) won’t be a traditional origin story — and it won’t feature a traditional protagonist, either. In an interview with Deadline, McFarlane explained that he doesn’t want the character to speak much, citing influences like “Jaws” and “The Ring” in which “the boogeyman doesn’t talk.”

“This is not a man in a rubber suit, it’s not a hero that’s going to come and save the damsel. It’s none of that,” the director told Deadline. “At the end of the movie, I’m hoping that the audience will say either, is this a ghost that turns into a man, or is it a man that turns into a ghost?”

That question sums of the essence of the character. Here’s some background on Spawn, per Deadline:

Foxx will play the character who started out in the comics as Al Simmons, a member of a CIA black ops team who is betrayed twice. After being set up by his cohorts to be murdered with his corpse set aflame, Newman is double crossed in Hell. He is convinced to become a Hellspawn warrior in exchange for being able to be reunited with his wife. But Spawn finds himself stuck in a demonic creature shell, and that his wife moved on and married his best friend. So this is one pissed-off antihero who attends to dispatching the scum of the city in good and evil battles that encompass Earth, Heaven and Hell.

That’s some pretty dark stuff, and as such, McFarlane is envisioning an R rating for the flick, which he hopes will launch a trilogy. He’s working with the folks at Blumhouse, no strangers to telling horrifying stories.

According to the writer-director, Foxx was his first choice for the role, after speaking with the Oscar winner five years ago about a potential “Spawn” project. In a statement, the actor expressed his excitement to get to work on the project:

A few years back I flew out to Arizona to meet the man behind one of the most incredible comic book characters in the universe… Todd McFarlane. He was taken aback when I told him with the enthusiasm of a young child that more than anything I wanted to put my name in the hat to embody his beloved character Spawn…. I told him no one would work harder than me if given the opportunity… well… the opportunity is here!! I’m humbled and ready to transform… and to top things off the young Jason Blum is lending his brilliance to the project! Time to be great!!!!

No word yet on when production is set to begin. Stay tuned.

  • Watch Jamie Foxx Abruptly End TV Interview Over Katie Holmes Question

Jamie Foxx and Katie Holmes have reportedly been dating for years. Just don’t ask them about it.

Holmes and Foxx spent Valentine’s Day together in Los Angeles. They were spotted heading to an area basketball court together, both in workout gear. Entertainment Tonight shared photos and a little video.

But, seriously, they’re not interested in opening up about their relationship, so stop even trying.

Foxx was just on ESPN’s “SportsCenter” talking to Michael Smith about the All-Star Celebrity Game during NBA All-Star weekend in L.A. Foxx was game to talk about how he prepared, but he was not happy when Smith tried to segue into a question about Foxx preparing by playing basketball with Holmes on Valentine’s Day. In response, Foxx — still smiling — just took off his headset and walked away. Interview over.

    Watch, it’s kind of wonderful:

Holmes and Foxx have reportedly been dating since 2013, a year after her split from Tom Cruise. They finally went public with their relationship over Labor Day weekend, just holding hands on the beach. They didn’t give any statements but it seemed obvious that they knew they were being photographed and were OK with it. There was speculation, at the time, that the summer 2017 timing was due to Holmes’ divorce agreement with Cruise.

Katie Holmes actually has a new movie coming out, “Dear Dictator,” opening March 16th. Jamie Foxx is playing Little John in the new “Robin Hood” movie opening in September.

  • Katie Holmes & Jamie Foxx Finally Go Public After Dating for Years

Minnesota Vikings v Washington RedskinsWhy now? Why not! Jamie Foxx and Katie Holmes have kept their relationship so low-key for so long that they’ve even denied being a couple. However, they finally took their love public on Labor Day, getting photographed holding hands on the beach in Malibu.

Even though the photos look like paparazzi shots, it’s unlikely that Holmes and Foxx didn’t know their PDA would be seen, since Malibu is prime pap territory for TMZ, etc.

The stars have reportedly been dating since 2013, a year after Holmes’ split from Tom Cruise.

Here’s speculation on the timing, via LaineyGosip:

Well, a lot of people think that Katie’s divorce agreement from Tom Cruise stipulated that she couldn’t be seen with another man for 5 years. Those 5 years expired this summer. Summer unofficially expired this weekend. Hello Katie and Jamie. Hello Tom Cruise, who just broke his ankle while doing a stunt on Mission: Impossible 6.

    Maybe?

Whatever the reason, fans were glad to see the pair out in the open:

Yeah, Jamie Foxx and Tom Cruise were in the movie “Collateral” together in 2004. The photo at top of Holmes, Cruise, and Foxx is from a football game in September 2006. Holmes abruptly left Cruise in 2012, then started dating Foxx.

Congratulations to the “new” couple — several years later!

  • Watch Ansel Elgort’s ‘Phenomenal’ Rendition of ‘Easy’ on ‘The Late Late Show’

“The Late Late Show,” but it was costar Ansel Elgort‘s smooth rendition of ’70s song “Easy” that astounded the late night host and the audience.

“Easy,” which was originally sung by Lionel Richie when he was with The Commodores, is — surprise, surprise — one of the songs on the killer “Baby Driver” soundtrack.

“That was phenomenal,” exclaimed Corden about Elgort’s vocal chops. Corden then choked out, “You’re better than me, you win.” Trying to comfort the distraught host, Foxx suggested, “Maybe there’s a world where all three of us are great singers.” The three then teamed up for a rendition of “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.”

Before Elgort took the stage, Corden began the riff-off with Bruno Mars’ “24K Magic” and Foxx sang Stevie Wonder’s “For Once in My Life,” then followed up with James Brown’s “I Got the Feelin’.”

“Baby Driver,” which, as Foxx pointed out, currently has 100% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, opens June 28.

  • Michelle Monaghan Punched Out Jamie Foxx’s Tooth, for Real, in Sleepless

How Jamie Foxx Lost a Tooth During a Fight Scene with Michelle Monaghan in Sleepless

During a fight scene in the thriller “Sleepless,” fists flew so fast and furious that Michelle Monaghan accidentally landed a hard one on the very expensive face of star Jamie Foxx.

“She hit me with a real punch,” Foxx tells Made in Hollywood reporter Patrick Stinson.

“Not a Hollywood punch?” asks Stinson.

“No, man, right down straight to the kisser,” says Foxx, pointing to his front teeth. “We’re doing the fight scene and I guess ‘action’ got called wrong and BAM! she chipped this. All this is porcelain.”

Monaghan Admits to Landing Stray Punch on Jamie Foxx in Sleepless

    Monaghan copped to it.

“I did,” she says. “It split my knuckle. And he was like, ‘Keep going, keep going.’ So I guess I’m going to keep going. And the next day he was fine. The next day the teeth were flawless again.”

Explains Foxx: “I got a great dentist.”

The star plays undercover Las Vegas police officer Vincent Downs caught in a high-stakes web of corrupt cops, internal affairs and murderous gangsters. When a failed heist leads to the kidnapping of his teenage son, Downs races against time during a wild and restless night to save him and bring the criminals to justice.

The movie has white-knuckle car chases and endless action that also left its marks on Monaghan, too.

“I got bruised and I was sore,” she says. “It’s interesting because you don’t actually feel the pain in the moment because you have a lot of that adrenaline. Then all of a sudden you’re home, and it’s 10 o’clock at night, and you’re like: Oh, god.”

    But neither’s complaining.

“It’s fun. It’s make believe,” says Foxx. “It’s Hollywood.”

“It’s …” they say together, “Made in Hollywood!”
