While generational crime drama ‘Peaky Blinders’ wrapped up its TV run in 2022 and movie ‘The Immortal Man’ effectively closed out one part of the story, creator Steven Knight still has more stories to tell.

And now, via Netflix, we have the first look at one of the main cast members, Jamie Bell, who takes over the role of Duke Shelby (as played by Barry Keoghan in the last couple of seasons and the movie).

In this new era of the Peaky Blinders, a decade after World War Two, the race to rebuild Birmingham becomes a brutal contest of mythical dimensions. This is a city of unprecedented opportunity and jeopardy.

At its blood-soaked heart is Duke Shelby (Bell): older, wiser, more ambitious, and most certainly more dangerous.

Here’s Knight talking about the new iteration of his creation:

“I am thrilled that we are announcing a new era of Peaky Blinders, moving the story to post-war Birmingham in the early 50s. We are incredibly fortunate to have Jamie Bell taking the role of Tommy Shelby’s oldest son, Duke, and to have Charlie Heaton also leading the cast. There are more exciting cast announcements to come, and ‘Peaky’ is on the road again.”

There are occasionally subjects that inspire films in dual development––famous examples have included danger from the skies in 1998’s ‘Deep Impact’ and ‘Armageddon’ and volcanoes via 1997’s ‘Volcano’ and ‘Dante’s Peak’.

Fred Astaire is perhaps not something you might expect to generate the same fever, but the incredibly talented performer is now the subject of two movies making announcements or adding filmmakers.

The first of the two, which had been development at Amazon but is now on the open market, has Jamie Bell and Margaret Qualley aboard to star as Astaire and longtime partner (and dancing equal) Ginger Rogers. Deadline reports that the movie’s rights are up for sale.

Hollywood icons Astaire and Rogers starred in ten movies together, starting with ‘Flying Down to Rio’ in 1933 and ending with ‘The Barkleys of Broadway’ in 1949. The duo revolutionized the musical film genre and dazzled audiences with their inventive flair. This movie focuses on a life-defining point in their early careers when their contrasting dance styles and competitive rivalry threatened to destroy their legendary partnership.

Jonathan Entwistle, who created series ‘The End of the F*cking World’ for Netflix is directing from a script by writer Arash Amel, who most recently worked on ‘The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare’ with director Guy Ritchie. The aim is to have this Astaire movie shooting later this year.

And then we come to the second Astaire-focused film, which will star ‘Spider-Man’s Tom Holland.

What is the Tom Holland Fred Astaire movie about?

Holland will play Astaire in a film that focuses on him and his sister, Adele Astaire. The two were inseparable for more than 20 years, moving out of a simple Midwestern vaudeville act in the early part of the 20th Century to Broadway and London’s West end in the 1920s.

Adele Astaire was initially the face of the act but eventually, Fred Astaire’s consummate stage skills eclipsed hers. The duo parted in 1932 when the sister married, which was a blow to Fred, but it also thrust him onto the path of Hollywood dance musicals, and subsequently into cinema immortality.

Paul King has come aboard to direct the movie. He’s the man behind both ‘Paddington’ movies and most recently made ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ prequel ‘Wonka’ starring Timothée Chalamet, which will be in theaters this December.

The connections between the two Astaire movies are deep––Lee Hall has come aboard the Holland-starring film to re-write the script. One of his previous credits? 2000’s dance-centric crowd-pleaser ‘Billy Elliot’, which starred Jamie Bell as a young lad with a love of dance who is mired in his family’s disintegration in a town in the North of England.

That movie was adapted into a successful stage musical, which saw a breakout performance from one Tom Holland. So by association, it’s Billy Elliot that takes the credit for the dueling Astaire films!

  • Jamie Bell Was ‘Bitterly Disappointed’ by ‘Fantastic Four,’ Too

Dior Homme : Front Row - Paris Fashion Week - Menswear Spring/Summer 2018Two years after the “Fantastic Four” reboot famously flamed out with both fans and critics, star Jamie Bell is reflecting on what went wrong — and says that he really was really disappointed with the flick, too.

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Bell chatted about his role as Ben Grimm, a.k.a. The Thing, and admitted that he still doesn’t really understand how the film got so far off track. Reports from the time alleged that director Josh Trank basically lost his mind while shooting, trying to control every aspect of his actors’ performances down to their blinking, and pushing for a moody tone that the source material didn’t support. The production was reportedly further derailed when studio 20th Century Fox stepped in to change the story, turning what mess Trank already had into something even more incoherent.

While Bell didn’t discuss any of those alleged events specifically, you can read between the lines of his diplomatic comments to gather that he wasn’t exactly happy with how the production went, either. Here’s what he told LAT:

There were several things on that movie I was clearly not privy to because I’m just an actor and I just do my stuff on set. But with something like that, everything starts with the best of intentions. A production begins with the idea to make something that’s unique and original and with integrity. I think the film really strived towards those goals. I don’t know what happened between the launch of the voyage and the arrival. I think we were all bitterly disappointed with that film. But that’s just the way it goes sometimes.

That “bitterly disappointed” line is a little heartbreaking, especially since it seems like the actor had such high hopes for the project . At least Bell and costar Kate Mara, who tied the knot earlier this summer, were able to find love in the midst of making a bad movie. Guess there’s a bright side to everything.

  • Jamie Bell in Talks to Be the Next James Bond

Marc Jacobs - Arrivals - Spring 2016 New York Fashion WeekWhile rumors have swirled for months about just who will be taking over the James Bond franchise from current 007 Daniel Craig, one surprising new name is apparently on the top of the list.

UK tabloid The Sun (via The Daily Mail) reports that actor Jamie Bell has been in talks with longtime Bond producer Barbara Broccoli about the possibility of taking the keys to 007’s Aston Martin. According to the report, Broccoli and Bell are currently working together on Bell’s new film, “Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool,” and the producer was “impressed by his skills.” Deadline later confirmed that talks between Bell and Bond producers are indeed taking place.

Bell had been rumored to be joining the Bond franchise before, back when 2012’s “Skyfall” was in production, playing a rival rookie agent opposite Craig’s 007. That role never materialized, though if the actor winds up as Bond this time around, he’ll obviously be getting a better star-making vehicle.

Of course, all this depends on Craig actually bowing out of the franchise, something the actor has declined to make truly official, despite lots of inflammatory statements to the contrary during the 2015 “Spectre” press tour. And then there’s the matter of the other, more high-profile candidates who have been in the mix longer than Bell, including current front-runner Tom Hiddleston.

According to Deadline, there’s been no movement yet on production of the next Bond flick, due to the fact that there’s currently no studio, no director, and “no workable script.” Negotiations aren’t expected to really start until later this year, the trade reports, and there may be an entirely new name making headlines by then (or perhaps even Craig himself, who’s reportedly holding off on making a definitive decision on his Bond future until more behind-the-scenes talent is firmly in place). Stay tuned to see how this all shakes (not stirs) out.

  • The ‘Fantastic Four’ Shoot Was ‘Chaos,’ and Josh Trank Was Almost Fired: Report

US -FILM-PREMIERE-FANTASTIC FOURA scathing new report about the filming of “Fantastic Four” has provided some insight into how and why the underwhelming film — which was widely panned and majorly flopped at the box office — turned out the way it did, and it seems that the flick was a disaster from the start.

The Hollywood Reporter did some digging and spoke to several sources about the allegedly arduous production process, and it turns out that the rumors of director Josh Trank being difficult to work with were just the tip of the iceberg. According to one crew member who spoke to THR, Trank “built a black tent around his monitor” and would hole up in there or in his trailer alone for entire shooting days, emerging only to film a scene.

The director reportedly insisted on pushing “a gloomy tone” on the cast (Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Kate Mara, and Jamie Bell), and was “telling [castmembers] when to blink and when to breathe,” an insider told THR.

“[M]ultiple sources associated with the project say the director did not produce material that would have opened the way to a salvageable film,” THR wrote. “And by several accounts, he resisted help.”

Eventually, talk turned to firing Trank, but a source told THR that that suggestion came too late in the production process, and would have required essentially scrapping the entire movie and losing the cast — a huge financial blow. Instead, studio Fox enlisted producers Simon Kinberg and Hutch Parker to slap together a different ending, and commissioned reshoots without key actors (only Teller was available, and shot scenes on a green screen alongside body doubles). Director Drew Goddard was reportedly brought in to supervise.

“It was chaos,” according to one crew member.

But the blame doesn’t stop there. Per THR:

A crewmember acknowledges that Trank bears much of the fault for the film’s problems but also says the Fox studio should not escape blame. The movie was “ill-conceived, made for the wrong reasons and there was no vision behind the property,” this person says. “Say what you will about Marvel but they have a vision.”

  • ‘Fantastic Four’ Director Reacts to Bad Reviews in Deleted Tweet

    Fantastic Four poster

The new “Fantastic Four” movie, which currently has only a 10% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, reportedly had set tensions between director Josh Trank and Fox executives, and The Hollywood Reporter said producers Simon Kinberg and Hutch Parker stepped in to finish the movie with reshoots just a few months before opening.

Perhaps that’s what Josh was referencing in a tweet he sent out August 6, the day before his movie’s official opening; the message was promptly deleted — but not before the Internet saved it for posterity.

Josh Trank has yet to respond, tweet anything new, or go for the classic “I was hacked.”

This is just the latest unfortunate bit of news for the movie. F4 was attacked by some fans for casting Michael B. Jordan as a black Johnny Storm, Kate Mara faced stupid questions about her short hair and sexy toes, Miles Teller just got bashed by Esquire (the cast all tweeted in his defense), and Jamie Bell was finally dragged into the silliness when asked about The Thing’s penis on “Watch What Happens Live.”

It’s possible all the insane chatter will just make viewers curious to see “Fantastic Four” and perhaps fans will be pleasantly surprised if it doesn’t turn out to be the new “Ishtar.” But it sounds like the franchise may be cursed … unless Marvel can save it?

  • Did ‘Fantastic Four’ Director Trash His Own Movie?

    "Fantastic Four" New York Premiere
“Fantastic Four” cast Jamie Bell (L), Miles Teller, Kate Mara and Michael B. Jordan

The critics have not been kind to “Fantastic Four.” And neither, it seems, was the movie’s director.

Josh Trank took to Twitter on Thursday to blast his own film, suggesting that studio interference doomed the Marvel reboot.

“A year ago I had a fantastic version of this. And it would’ve received great reviews,” he wrote. “You’ll probably never see it. That’s reality though.”

Trank quickly took down the message, but it was too late — screen grabs of the Tweet went viral.

With a 20 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, critics slammed the superhero movie, starring Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Jamie Bell and Kate Mara, as a low-effort, slow-paced film that was too dark and misused its talented cast.

  • Critics Say ‘Fantastic Four’ Is Not So Fantastic

    "Fantastic Four" New York Premiere
Actors Jamie Bell (L), Miles Teller, Kate Mara, and Michael B. Jordan bond on the red carpet on Aug. 4 at the “Fantastic Four” premiere in New York City.

“Fantastic Four” is a reboot that most critics say should get the boot.

With a 20 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, reviews blasted the superhero movie, starring Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan and Kate Mara, as a low-effort, slow-paced film that is anything but fantastic.

The trouble, critics say, starts with a gloom hanging over every scene.

“(W)hile comicbook aficionados will likely welcome the seriousness of tone, the near-absence of humor and lengthy emphasis on building the interdimensional portal largely handcuffs the cast, with only a hint, for example, of the ebullience Johnny gleans from his newfound powers” — Brian Lowry, Variety

Despite a promising cast, the film’s execution fails them.

“Director Josh Trank, whose debut feature ‘Chronicle’ put a smart new spin on superhero tropes, has assembled a quartet of engaging, charismatic performers and stranded them in a miasma of exposition and set-up that sinks the movie. So much time is spent putting the pieces on the board that there’s barely any time to play with them.” —Alonso Duralde, The Wrap

As for any more reimagining of the franchise, most critics can’t imagine it.

“The fact that the writers couldn’t think of anything interesting to do with these characters in this first series reboot does not bode well for any potential excitement in a sequel” –Todd McCarthy, The Hollywood Reporter

  • Miles Teller Turns the Tables and Interviews the Interviewer

    Kylie and Fantastic Four
Miles Teller (L), Jamie Bell, Kylie Mar and Michael B. Jordan

Surprise! I’m actually the Invisible Woman in the new “Fantastic Four” movie!

Okay, I’m just kidding (Kate Mara has that role). But last weekend I flew to New York and hung out with the guys from the reimagined “Fantastic Four” before our interview started!

    2103335_orig

A moment like this rarely happens, but it’s a really nice icebreaker. Michael B. Jordan (Human Torch) and I actually share a lot of mutual friends, so that also helped create an easy mood and conversation right off the bat with the guys.

As soon as I sat down, Miles Teller (Reed Richards aka Mister Fantastic) was immediately hounding me with questions. Playfully, he was asking me what I thought about the movie: If I thought the final fight sequence should have been shorter or longer and what I thought about Victor Von Doom (Toby Kebbell) in this film. I gave him my honest answers, which clearly proved I wasn’t just there to sweet-talk them or suck up to them. I think they liked that.

I had actually told Miles about my experience watching the original film 10 years ago, and why I liked it so much. Miles told me he never saw the original film! When I interviewed the four of them, I really wanted to know what they wanted to do differently with this film, BECAUSE of the fact that there were already two films established 10 years ago. Assuming that they had seen the original(s), would the original cast’s characters and performances affect their take on their roles? Watch the interview to find out.

  • ‘Fantastic Four’ Cast Has Not Seen Their Own Movie

    Fantastic Four
Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Jamie Bell and Michael B. Jordan

Marvel fan boys and girls are eagerly anticipating the chance to see the rebooted “Fantastic Four” in theaters on Friday, and apparently castmates Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Jamie Bell and Michael B. Jordan can be counted among those who will see it for the first time too.

“I’m going to try to see it opening night with a real audience,” Mara, who plays Sue Storm, tells BBC’s Newsbeat.

The 32-year-old actress and her co-stars, along with movie critics, have not seen the final version of the film.

Perhaps it is good then that the rising stars have yet to see the completed project, as Teller, who plays Reed Richards, echoed Mara, adding doubt about the actioner receiving any praise from reviewers.

“Rarely are films of this size critically well received,” he explains. “We tried to make something coming from a more dramatic standpoint so we’re hoping that people enjoy it and recognize that we’re trying to do something original.”

In “Fantastic Four,” a group of space travelers acquire incredible super powers after they are exposed to radiation during a trip to an alternate universe. The film hits theaters Friday. Watch the trailer below.
