Let’s get some things straight right away: Brendan Fraser is not in ‘Lee Cronin’s The Mummy.’ Tom Cruise is not in ‘Lee Cronin’s The Mummy.’ And, oddly enough, there really isn’t a mummy in ‘Lee Cronin’s The Mummy.’ Although this movie, produced by James Wan‘s Atomic Monster banner and Blumhouse Films, eschews the action-adventure strains of the Fraser and Cruise variations, its return to the IP’s horror roots is still missing the classic image of a hulking, bandaged corpse slowly shambling after its victims.

In its place is a plot loosely linked to the Egyptian monster of yore, as well as a bunch of scenes and ideas either pulled from or inspired by other horror movies, ranging from the classic ‘The Exorcist’ to the more recent ‘Bring Her Back’ to Cronin’s own ‘Evil Dead Rise.’ But even though the film is nasty, viciously bloody, and wildly bonkers in its third act, a sloppy, strung-together script all but buries ‘The Mummy.’

TV reporter Charlie Cannon (Jack Reynor) and his doctor wife Larissa (Lola Costa), along with their young son Sebastian and daughter Katie, are living in Cairo, Egypt, while Charlie is on assignment there. But then Katie vanishes after being lured to the edge of their backyard by a mysterious woman (Hayat Kamille) – a woman glimpsed in the film’s prologue when something stirs in a sarcophagus on her family’s property.

Eight years later, the Cannons have long since returned to the U.S. and live in Albuquerque, where Charlie is a local news producer. Little daughter Maud (Billie Roy) has since been born as well, but no trace of Katie has ever been uncovered. Then the Cannons get a call from Cairo: Katie has been found, alive, wrapped in bandages in that same sarcophagus from the opening, after the plane it’s being transported on crashes.

But as the Cannons soon discover, Katie barely resembles the sweet little girl who disappeared nearly a decade ago. Her skin, nails, and hair desiccated, her body gnarled and contorted, and Katie herself incapable of speech, her survival hardly seems like a miracle. And in fact it’s not: before long, Katie begins behaving in bizarre, dangerous ways, as a malignant presence exerts its influence on the Cannons and threatens to destroy the family.

‘The Mummy’ is one of those movies in which the audience quickly gets so far ahead of the characters that the whole narrative rapidly turns increasingly ludicrous. From the start, it’s clear that something is horribly wrong with Katie; the doctors who let her go home should have their licenses revoked, and she has no business being home so soon. Yet as grotesque as she is, it takes a long time for the Cannons to wake up.

After one particularly brutal outburst of violence, Charlie suggests that it might be time to send Katie elsewhere for round-the-clock professional care. ‘Do you think I’m incapable of caring for my daughter?’ asks Larissa, almost comically unreasonable in light of current events. The whole middle act is a rinse-repeat of Katie doing something violent or gross, with the family simply waiting for the next incident.

Charlie finally investigates the circumstances of Katie’s disappearance with the help of an Egyptian detective (May Calamawy) who was initially on the case in Cairo. Meanwhile, things get progressively worse at the Cannons’ place, leading to a gruesome scene involving coyotes and an in-house wake that turns into a display of vomiting, blood, guts, and the lapping of embalming fluid – and still Katie remains at home.

There is some truly shocking gore in ‘The Mummy,’ and in fact the film is a kissing cousin aesthetically and visually to ‘Evil Dead Rise.’ Cronin is nothing if not mean-spirited when it comes to doling out the onscreen pain, and between that and a few creepy sequences in the house (which, we must note, is at least the third domicile we’ve seen on film this year with full passageways in its walls – what’s with the builders in these movies?), ‘The Mummy’ does have some schlock horror value.

Terrific sound design and a series of unnerving split diopter shots give it an added boost as well. But in the end, ‘The Mummy’ is too sloppily structured as a story for us to care about this family and its fate, and it also turns out – expository lore aside – to not really be a mummy movie at all, but another, all too familiar type of horror movie.

    Cast and Performances

Jack Reynor is serviceable if rather bland as Charlie, the actor capable of either wide-eyed alarm or heavy-lidded shock. His everyman demeanor helps but his character, like the others, is too thinly sketched in to feel real. Reynor and Laia Costa as Larissa have zero chemistry as a married couple, while Verónica Falcón provides some comic relief as the family’s Abuelita.

We did like May Calamawy’s haunted detective, but the best performance is by Natalie Grace as the older Katie. Laden with unsettling prosthetics, making death-rattle sounds in her throat and throwing her body around like a graduate of the Regan MacNeil school for possessed children, Grace is creepily effective and actually hard to look at for long.

    Final Thoughts

Look, there have been loads of mummy movies, and many of the older ones are rather dull quickies in which a stuntman (or Lon Chaney Jr. or Christopher Lee) shuffles around in dirt-caked wrappings and makeup. The more recent attempts channel an Indiana Jones vibe, so it’s nice to see the property done as a proper horror movie again, and credit to Cronin for at least trying to give it a new spin to some degree.

But it’s still not the scary mummy movie we’ve been hoping for, and in fact it’s another kind of horror film entirely once the bandages fall away – which is ironic, because early viewers apparently think it’s going to be a new Brendan Fraser entry. Yet despite its visual flourishes and admittedly effective jolts of blood and guts, ‘Lee Cronin’s The Mummy’ doesn’t pay enough attention to its story or characters to make its overlong, two-hour-and-15-minute runtime feel like anything but an eternity.

‘The Mummy’ receives a score of 55 out of 100.

    • Amazon has reportedly ordered a new ‘RoboCop’ series.
    • It’ll expand on the world of the 1987 movie.
    • Peter Ocko will write the initial script, with James Wan producing.

It’s been a couple of years since we heard much about the developing new series based on 1987’s cyborg law enforcement thriller satire ‘RoboCop’.

Now, via a profile of Amazon’s Head of Global Television, Peter Friedlander, word arrives that the company has greenlit the show.

Peter Ocko, whose TV CV includes work on shows such as ‘Dead Like Me’ and ‘Lodge 49’, is aboard to serve as executive producer on the series, while genre filmmaker James Wan will produce.

What was the story of ‘RoboCop’?

    ‘RoboCop’. Photo: Orion Pictures.

The movie franchise kicked off in 1987 with the first ‘Robocop’ film starring Peter Weller as the titular half man, half machine officer. Weller returned for the sequel in 1990, with Robert Burke taking over the role for ‘Robocop 3’ in 1993.

A reboot starring Joel Kinnaman was released in 2014. There have also been multiple ‘Robocop’ TV shows since then, including two animated and two live-action shows, as well as video games and comic books.

What will the new ‘RoboCop’ series be about?

From the sounds of its official logline, the series will be following a familiar path: “A giant tech conglomerate collaborates with the local police department to introduce a technologically advanced enforcer to combat rising crime — a police officer who’s part man, part machine.”

Will we buy that for a dollar? It remains to be seen…

Since it earned $487 million at the global box office, ‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’ was almost certainly not the last ‘Conjuring’ movie.

In fact, if Warner Bros. and New Line have their way, there will certainly be more. According to The InSneider, a prequel movie is now in development.

Details are somewhat scarce on the movie so far, but we do know that Rodrigue Huart, who has seen success in the short film arena, is in talks to direct.

Right now, the story is a mystery, beyond the notion that it’ll turn the clock back to the early days of Ed and Lorraine Warren, as played in the main ‘Conjuring’ franchise by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga.

Whether either actor will be back for bookend scenes, it seems more likely that new people will be stepping into the roles.

What we do know is that Richard Naing and Ian Goldberg, who co-wrote 2023’s ‘The Nun II’ and this year’s ‘Last Rites’ are aboard to script this new movie.

What else is happening in the ‘Conjuring’ universe?

A TV spin-off of the movies has been in the works for some time, and recently hired Nancy Won, a veteran of shows such as Apple TV‘s ‘Sunny’, Netflix‘s ‘Jessica Jones’ and ‘Little Fires Everywhere’ on Hulu to be showrunner, executive producer and head writer for the series.

Plot information is unavailable right now, but the show will apparently continue the story in some fashion, likely without using the Warrens (but we won’t count them out).

The movie series’ Peter Safran remains onboard as an executive producer, with James Wan’s Atomic Monster company also producing. Wan, of course, launched the movie series with 2013’s ‘The Conjuring’.

Also hired for the show were writers Peter Cameron and Cameron Squires, who have Marvel shows and other genre work on their resumes.

When will this ‘The Conjuring’ prequel movie be in theaters?

With none of the deals officially in place yet, we wouldn’t expect this next chunk of scare tactics to be out much before 2027 at the earliest.

There are few details available about the show right now, though Variety’s report mentions that the show will continue some aspect of the ‘Conjuring’ storyline.

Whether that means any appearances of Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as Ed and Lorraine Warren, the main characters (based on real-life supernatural investigators) remains to be seen, but we can imagine the show exploring its own corner of the universe.

There is, let’s not forget other avenues the show could exploit, including ‘The Nun’ and ‘Annabelle’ movie spin-off timelines, but chances are it’ll plough its own row.

The movie series’ Peter Safran remains onboard as an executive producer, with James Wan’s Atomic Monster company also producing. Wan, of course, launched the movie series with 2013’s ‘The Conjuring’.

Alongside the ‘Conjuring’ show, fellow horror franchise ‘It’ has its own spin-off hitting HBO Max starting October 26th called ‘IT: ‘Welcome to Derry’. It’s a prequel set in the 1960s.

And while it’s not strictly a spin-off from an existing movie, superhero series ‘Lanterns’ is part of the DC Studios universe and will include appearances from Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner, whose character was introduced in ‘Superman’.

When will the ‘Conjuring’ series be on HBO Max?

Since it’s at such an early stage, there is no information yet on when the show might hit the streaming service.

    • ‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’ opened big at the global box office.
    • It represents the most successful launch for a ‘Conjuring’ movie.
    • And Warner Bros. is on a remarkable run.

The ‘Conjuring’ franchise –– launched back in 2013 by James Wan –– has been quite the reliable performer for Warner Bros., and this past weekend’s launch of latest entry ‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’ certainly kept that tradition alive.

‘Last Rites’, advertised as the final outing for Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga’s supernatural investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, took in an impressive $83 million in its first three days.

    gb9DOCOXvGEq5NH7gF1ZL4

That makes it the most successful entry in a franchise that, via a run of nine movies including sequels and spin-offs, has earned $2.3 billion.

This ‘Last Rites’ launch was easily enough to win the box office here in the US, and with $194 million worldwide, it is also the most successful launch for a horror title globally, overtaking Warners’ own ‘It’.

The success of ‘Last Rites’ marks an impressive theatrical run for Warner Bros. as the seventh consecutive release to open above $40 million. No other studio has ever achieved that level of consistency at the box office.

It’s even more remarkable when you consider that earlier in the year, the studio had suffered a series of duds from 2024 and the initial months of 2024 including ‘Joker: Folie a Deux’, ‘Mickey 17’ and ‘The Alto Knights’.

Studio Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group co-chiefs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy were at risk of being fired until the likes of ‘A Minecraft Movie’, ‘Sinners’, ‘Superman’ and more began a run of hits, with movies sticking around beyond their first weekend.

Disney’s theatrical release of the filmed ‘Hamilton’ stage musical was a distant second, earning $10 million from 1,825 screens. It’s a solid start given that the movie has been on Disney+ since 2020.

Warners’ ‘Weapons’ (another success story for the studio) was third, earning $5.3 million, followed by ‘Freakier Friday’ with $3.2 million in fourth and Darren Aronofsky’s crime caper ‘Caught Stealing’ on $3.2 million in fifth place.

It’s kind of amazing to realize that the ‘Conjuring’ universe is the only successful shared cinematic universe that doesn’t have superheroes in it. But after 12 years and $2.2 billion in box office receipts, this spooky paranormal saga revolving primarily around the real-life case files of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren is finally coming to a close.

After the tedious, going-through-the-motions disappointment of 2021’s ‘The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It,’ we’re glad to report that ‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’ finds the series on much better footing as it heads for the door. While it doesn’t quite match up to the first two installments, and there’s a certain amount of formula now permanently ingrained in the proceedings, ‘Last Rites’ is a more energetic, creepier, and emotional sendoff, anchored like all these films by the chemistry between stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga.

It’s 1986, and Ed and Lorraine Warren are all but retired from the paranormal investigation business due to Ed’s health issues and Lorraine’s fear of bringing evil forces down upon their heads and that of their now grown daughter Judy. At the same time, Ed is restless: the couple find themselves lecturing to near-empty college classrooms full of snickering students, and he’s not adapting well to a private life where he has to order the salad in a restaurant instead of lasagna.

So when they are approached about the case of Jack and Janet Smurl – whose family and house in West Pittston, Pennsylvania are seemingly under assault from a demonic entity – the Warrens find themselves pulled back in just when they thought they were out. But there’s an added wrinkle, as whatever is haunting the Smurls has its sights set on Judy as well, and is already sinking its psychic talons into her.

Director Michael Chaves – returning from ‘The Devil Made Me Do It’ – seems more confident here, even though he sticks squarely to the cinematic playbook of ‘Conjuring’ franchise mastermind and original series director James Wan. That means we get Wan’s trademark sweeps of dark rooms with even darker corners, which are surprisingly still effective: you can’t help but tense up anytime the camera lingers on those negative spaces. The demonic apparitions are spooky if fairly familiar, and some of the film plays like a ‘greatest hits’ as even haunted doll Annabelle makes a return for reasons that remain unclear at best.

But it’s the additional stakes for the Warrens that make ‘Last Rites’ largely work. While the film suffers from being a bit too long and suffers from stop-and-go pacing accordingly, the script (by Ian Goldberg, Richard Naing, and series regular David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, from a story by Johnson-McGoldrick and Wan) puts much more emphasis on the family dynamics of the Warrens as they try to leave their past behind for the sake of their health and safety. We have no idea what the Warrens were like in real life or whether they believed in what they were doing, but the fictional family portrayed here is likable, brave, and sympathetic. It’s what ultimately makes the scares land, and keeps the viewer invested even through the clumsier parts.

As noted earlier, the main ‘Conjuring’ films have benefited enormously from the work of Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga. They have become as comfortable in the roles as your favorite Marvel or ‘Fast and the Furious’ superhero, and their empathy and warmth go a long way in making this horror franchise relatable. The pair also do a lot of the heavy lifting here, especially when the script bogs down, and they add enough to the more emotional moments to sell them successfully.

The rest of the cast is fine, if somewhat generic. Mia Tomlinson gets some moments to shine as the Warrens’ daughter Judy, while Ben Hardy is likable if a bit bland as her boyfriend Tony. The Smurls, unfortunately, are a more generic lot, and with much of the emphasis on the Warrens, the family at the center of the haunting never really rises above the level of ghostly punching bags.

As with any sustained media franchise, the universe of ‘The Conjuring’ has had its highs and lows. The third ‘Conjuring’ film, both ‘Nun’ entries, and the first ‘Annabelle’ probably rank pretty low, while the initial ‘Conjuring’ films and the underrated ‘Annabelle Comes Home’ sit at the top of the heap.

‘Last Rites’ ends up somewhere in the middle, perhaps a bit closer to the top thanks to the emotional connection of its leads and its ability to still mine some genuine scares out of this material. The end of the film gives the Warrens a satisfying goodbye, and no matter what you think about the real-life couple or their alleged experiences, James Wan and company have created a horror saga in which good-hearted characters are the protagonists, not a masked killer or supernatural being. We’ll take over all the Jasons and Art the Clowns in the world.

‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’ receives a score of 75 out of 100.

    • Octavia Spencer will return for a ‘Ma’ sequel.
    • Blumhouse announced the movie at its inaugural “Business of Fear” event.
    • No director is attached yet.

The Blumhouse team, for all of its dedication to making original movies, has not been shy about commissioning sequels to its successes, and building franchises, albeit still making titles on a thrifty budget.

At the company’s recent “Business of Fear” event, boss Jason Blum, in collaboration with creative partner James Wan of Atomic Monster (the two companies signed a pact to work together), announced that one such movie getting the follow-up treatment is 2019 thriller ‘Ma,’ with star Octavia Spencer confirmed to return.

While the original movie was written by Scotty Landes and directed by Tate Taylor, we don’t yet know who will be working on the sequel.

    lOCBODsRSY2wRGhlBOJG76

Here’s Blum talking about the new movie in a statement:

“ ‘Ma’ has proven to be a social phenomenon since its release in 2019, with fans eagerly embracing the film and Octavia’s iconic performance as Ma. As Ma likes to say ‘don’t make me drink alone,’ so we’re thrilled Octavia will join us again for a second round.”

What was the story of ‘Ma’?

Octavia Spencer and the cast of 2019's 'Ma'. Photo: Universal Pictures.
Octavia Spencer and the cast of 2019’s ‘Ma’. Photo: Universal Pictures.

The original film followed a group of high schoolers (played by Diana Silvers, Corey Fogelmanis, McKaley Miller, Gianni Paolo and Dante Brown) who find an unlikely, intergenerational friend in Sue Ann Ellington, a lonesome veterinarian and devoted party animal played by Spencer.

The woman, affectionately called “Ma,” allows the teens to party in her basement, but things get bloody once their relationship starts to sour –– as it turns out, “Ma” has a complicated history with the several of the teens’ parents. And she’s out for vengeance…

Where might a ‘Ma’ sequel go?

Octavia Spencer in 2019's 'Ma'. Photo: Universal Pictures.
Octavia Spencer in 2019’s ‘Ma’. Photo: Universal Pictures.

That’s the big question at this point –– and spoiler alert if you didn’t see the first movie.

‘Ma’ ends with Sue Ann stabbed and cuddling with the dead body of her own high school crush, Ben (Luke Evans) as her house starts to burn down around her.

But if we’ve learned anything from horror movies in the past, it’s that the villain, especially one as complicated as Sue Ann, rarely lets a little thing like presumably certain death get in the way of returning.

There are any number of avenues this potential follow-up could take –– even a prequel is possible. But our money is on Ma getting back to her old ways, and likely looking to exact revenge on more people, especially those who survived the original.

Where else can we find Octavia Spencer?

Octavia Spencer as Kimberly in Apple TV+'s 'Spirited .'
Octavia Spencer as Kimberly in Apple TV+’s ‘Spirited .’

From her early days in tiny supporting roles (blink and miss her in the likes of Sam Raimi’s ‘Spider-Man,’ ‘Being John Malkovich’ and ‘S.W.A.T.’), Spencer has steadily grown into a versatile performer who can pull off both comedy and drama –– and often both together in one performance.

She’s memorable in a wealth of roles but enjoyed a big breakout via ‘The Help’ (also directed by longtime friend Taylor), for which she won a Best Actress in a Supporting Role Oscar for her portrayal of Minny Jackson.

Elsewhere, she scored further nominations for her work in ‘Hidden Figures’ and ‘The Shape of Water’ and was most recently seen in Apple TV+ holiday movie ‘Spirited.’

And in TV terms, she’s been equally busy, including another Apple project, drama series ‘Truth be Told.’

Spencer is also active as a producer, setting up various projects to appear in, but also helping filmmakers get their projects made.

What else did Blumhouse announce at its event?

Jigsaw in 2023's 'Saw X'. Photo: Lionsgate Films.
Jigsaw in 2023’s ‘Saw X’. Photo: Lionsgate Films.

Among the other projects that Jason Blum and others announced at the event is an adaptation of paranormal horror video game title ‘Phasmophobia.’

That was released in 2020, developed and published by British indie game studio Kinetic Games. The game has surpassed 23 million in global sales and has become a genre-defining title in multiplayer horror gaming.

The game is an investigation survival game played from a first-person point of view. The player can work alone or with a group of people to identify the type of ghost haunting a specific location. No talent is attached to that one yet.

And that wasn’t the only news, as Blum also brought word that the company is in the midst of a deal to acquire the rights to venerable horror franchise ‘Saw’ from Twisted Pictures’ Mark Burg and Oren Koules.

Lionsgate will continue to be involved as a partner and continue to own 50% of the franchise.

Most notably, it brings the movie series closer back to Wan, who co-wrote with Leigh Whannell and directed the 2004 movie that kicked the whole saga off. He’s since served as an executive producer on the other films.

An 11th movie has been in development, and at one point had been scheduled for this September. But creative differences have led to it stalling –– hopes are likely high that Wan and co. can get things back on track.

Here’s what Blum told IndieWire about the team’s process these days:

“It’s much harder to do what we started doing 15 years ago. So the way that we’ve addressed that is by adding a bit of money to our model; but still, by studio standards, for instance, the budgets of our movies are 60% off the average sticker price, actually probably more, 75% off, the average sticker price.”

When will the ‘Ma’ sequel stalk on to screens?

It’s very early in the process for this one, despite the announcement and Spencer’s involvement, the movie has yet to confirm a director (though Taylor could always be tempted back) and Blumhouse hasn’t set a release date.

Presumably, that will all be firmed up once the movie actually has a creative plan in place.

    • James Wan is in talks to develop a new take on ‘The Creature from the Black Lagoon’.
    • It’ll be another filmmaker-focused take on a classic from Universal.
    • Wan is also producing this movie among many others.

Long after it pivoted away from its plan for a connected “Dark Universe” of monster movies based on its classic titles, Universal has been seeing success (albeit mixed) with filmmaker-focused takes including ‘The Invisible Man’.

So it surely makes sense for the studio to have one of the biggest names in modern horror filmmaking and someone who has experience with watery stories ready to jump aboard a new version of ‘The Creature from the Black Lagoon’.

Which means we probably should all have predicted that ‘Saw’/‘The Conjuring’s James Wan, who also directed the two ‘Aquaman’ movies, would enter early talks for the movie.

The 1954 monster movie, made in the gimmicky and popular 3D format, told of a prehistoric water-breathing humanoid monster and the group of scientists that want to study him.

It was the among the last of the Universal’s great monster movies, combining an entrancing mix of horror, tragedy, and romance, and introduced audiences to the Gill-Man, aka The Creature who is the last of his kind.

Jack Arnold, director of sci-fi classics such as ‘The Incredible Shrinking Man’, directed the movie, which featured Julie Adams as the woman who caught the Creature’s eye.

Who else has dipped into making a new ‘Creature’?

A scene from 1954's 'Creature from the Black Lagoon'. Photo: Universal Pictures.
A scene from 1954’s ‘Creature from the Black Lagoon’. Photo: Universal Pictures.

Hollywood has been trying to crack a new take on the Creature for years, with John Landis looking to produce an iteration in the 1980s, while John Carpenter and even Ivan Reitman developed takes in the 1990s.

Gary Ross took it on in the 2000s, intent on following in his father’s footsteps — Arthur A. Ross co-wrote the script for the original — as did Breck Eisner.

And Will Beall wrote a script for a version of the Creature that would have been a part of the Dark Universe concept.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Wan’s film would be a grounded, modernized retelling that will lean into visceral horror, while still paying respect to the original.

We’ll have to wait and see what happens with this latest attempt.

Wan’s Atomic Monster company, which recently joined forces with Blumhouse, has a huge swathe of movies and TV series on the way, including a ‘M3GANsequel, a spin-off to the killer doll movie called ‘SOULM8TE’ and a TV series called ‘Teacup’ based at Peacock.

Wan is also in development on a fourth installment of his wildly successful ‘Conjuring’ horror franchise, which he is describing as the final entry from the main storyline.

But then there are the other cases, ones that almost serve as a “surprise! New finished movie!” story, with the film already in the can. And for ‘The Monkey’, that’s certainly the case, with production completed and deals reportedly made to sell it to distributors, at least according to Deadline.

The new movie adapts –– as so many projects these days seem to –– a Stephen King story. In this case, it’s a short story that was first published as a booklet included in Gallery magazine in 1980.

King revised the story for publication in his 1985 collection ‘Skeleton Crew’. The narrative follows young brothers, Peter and Dennis who discover a cymbal-banging monkey in the attic of their great-uncle’s house. As if that wasn’t scary enough –– seriously, have you seen some of those things? –– they discover its sinister history. Originally discovered by their father, Hal, it turned out to be cursed, and every time it clapped its cymbals together, someone near Hal died.

In the movie, the brothers will soon find that people around them are dying, and attempt to dispose of the toy, then grow up and apart. But when a string of mysterious deaths begins, they must reunite to destroy the monkey for good before it takes the lives of everyone close to them.

‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ is the final movie of the previous DECU era. Current DC co-chairs James Gunn and Peter Safran are working towards their new vision for DC. The two previously announced ‘Superman Legacy,’ a film that will be a part of the new DC Universe Chapter One, ‘Gods and Monsters.’ Other DC films, such as ‘Joker: Folie á Deux’ will exist in Elseworld.

This could mean that there’s a slight chance we can see Momoa’s Aquaman return in some capacity, as Elseworld stories do not connect to the main canon of the new DCU.

Gunn and Safran introduced their new DC slate a year ago and have announced that ‘Superman Legacy’ has started production, and the ‘Creature Commandos’ episodes are being finished, with the series being released later this year. Gunn also teases upcoming projects and says, “incredible talents are being attached to new projects, planned & unplanned.”

“Today, ‘Superman Legacy’ is about to start production, episodes of ‘Creature Commandos’ are being finished that will release later this year, at least 2 more projects are gearing up to go in the next couple months, amazing scripts keep coming in, & incredible talent are being attached to new projects, planned & unplanned. Thank you!!”
