Arriving on Hulu on March 27 is ‘Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice’, a blend of crime, sci-fi, comedy and action written and directed by ‘Scott Pilgrim Takes Off’ co-creator BenDavid Grabinski.

The cast for the movie includes Vince Vaughn (‘The Break-Up’), James Marsden (‘X-Men’), Eiza González (‘Baby Driver’), Keith David (‘The Princess and the Frog’) and Jimmy Tatro (‘Theater Camp’).

Crime thrillers that blend action and crime are nothing new, but few offer the sci-fi twist that BenDavid Grabinski’s new movie can boast.

It sometimes comes off as a throwback 1990s thriller comedy, full of pop culture references (a ‘Gilmore Girls’ discussion might be the funniest) and needle drops from the era and beyond.

Written and directed by Grabinski, this has a script that moves at a fair clip, throwing a variety of different characters at us, who all provide various levels of entertainment value. Sometimes it all feels a little Tarantino-lite, but it has its own appeal.

Cinematographer Larry Fong helps give this one some visual panache, and if it occasionally leans too hard on certain styles, the movie certainly delivers in a way that fans of directors such as Edgar Wright will appreciate.

    Cast and Performances

It’s the casting that really helps this one –– Vaughn delivers his trademark witty attitude (with an extra version of his character for good measure thanks to the movie’s time travel twist). Marsden is appealing nervy and if González doesn’t always get as much to do, her Alice is still a solid character.

Around them, there is a deep bench of comedy acting talent, including Stephen Root, Ben Schwartz and Jimmy Tatro, who all steal scenes.

It’s a shame that ‘Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice’ isn’t being given a shot at the big screen –– it has flare that would work well there.

Still, at least it has a chance to be seen and appreciated by a large, wide audience on streaming and could be a future cult favorite.

    ‘Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice’ receives 70 out of 100.

What’s the story of ‘Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice’?

Two gangsters and the woman they love try to survive the most dangerous night of their lives. As if that wasn’t enough, there’s one wild ingredient added to the mix: a time machine.

Arriving on Hulu on February 23 with three episodes (with five more to follow once weekly) is the second season of ‘Paradise’, the thriller series from ‘This is Us’ creator Dan Fogelman that keeps audiences guessing.

    A7GKzzRmUOtAolpvPrptT7

The cast for the show, led by Sterling K. Brown (‘Black Panther’), Julianne Nicholson (‘I, Tonya’), Sarah Shahi (‘Black Adam’), James Marsden (‘X-Men’), Nicole Brydon Bloom (‘1BR’) and Krys Marshall (‘Alone in the Dark’), expands this year to include Shailene Woodley (‘Divergent’) and Thomas Doherty (‘The Invitation’).

Talking about ‘Paradise’ is a dicey prospect for any reviewer, since it is predicated on a giant, twisty premise. But if you’re here reading a review of Season 2, we have to assume you’ve seen the first season (if not, go and watch it!) so I can talk about the fact that it revolves around an underground community that is designed to keep a limited population safe after an Earth-shattering environmental incident.

The first run of episodes was full of twists and turns, and the second keeps the pace up, even if much about the community has been revealed. But the best idea here was to send Brown’s Xavier Collins on a hunt for his wife, who has survived the cataclysmic events elsewhere, opening things up to new avenues.

    Script and Direction

Dan Fogelman, no stranger to both narrative rug pulls and tugging on the emotional heart strings, has here managed to keep the story of ‘Paradise’ moving even after the revelations of last year. The expanded plotline is worthwhile, even if it sometimes dilutes the overall effectiveness.

Filmmaking duo Glenn Ficarra and John Requa are the primary directors for the series, and working alongside a couple of others, they keep ‘Paradise’ looking good, with the visual palette of the post-apocalyptic outside world just as impactful as those inside the show’s usual community.

    Cast and Performances

Julianne Nicholson plays Samantha Redmond in 'Paradise' Season 2. Photo: Disney/Ser Baffo.
Julianne Nicholson plays Samantha Redmond in ‘Paradise’ Season 2. Photo: Disney/Ser Baffo.

It’s no accident that Fogelman chose to work with Sterling K. Brown again after helping him break out with ‘This is Us.’ Here, Brown gets plenty of chances to showcase his considerable acting chops, bringing lots of layers to Secret Service officer Xavier Collins.

Julianne Nicholson remains superb as the calculating tech billionaire Samantha “Sinatra” Redmond who conceived of the bunker, while in-Paradise highlights include Krys Marshall as dedicated officer Robinson and Nicole Brydon Bloom as the psychopathic Jane.

Woodley, meanwhile, enjoys her own storyline as survivor Annie, who made it through the environmental chaos holed up in Graceland.

Sarah Shahi plays Dr. Gabriela Torabi in ‘Paradise’ Season 2. Photo: Disney/Ser Baffo.

‘Paradise’s first season was a series of mystery box reveals, and while elements of that remain in the second, the focus is also on the emotional stakes for the characters, letting some accomplished actors revel in solidly written scripts.

‘Paradise’ Season 2 receives 71 out of 100.

What’s the plot of ‘Paradise’ Season 2?

A shocking murder turns the serene community of Paradise on its head. Kicking off a high-stakes investigation that uncovered secrets that some hoped would stay hidden.

And in Season 2, the world expands yet further as both Sterling K. Brown’s Xavier Collins and the story venture beyond Paradise’s borders.

    Who stars in ‘Paradise’?

    • Sterling K. Brown as Xavier Collins
    • James Marsden as President Cal Bradford
    • Nicole Brydon Bloom as Jane Driscoll
    • Julianne Nicholson as Samantha Redmond

Turns out, making two giant ‘Avengers’ movies back to back is going to take a little longer than originally thought.

Disney and Marvel have announced that the next two team-up films from the comic book behemoth are now set to arrive a little later in theaters than originally planned –– ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is shifting from a planned May 5th, 2026 slot to December 18th, 2026.

Likewise, ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ will now decamp from a May 5th, 2027 release date to –– you guessed it! –– December 18th that year.

Clearly, directors Joe Russo and Anthony Russo have decided the new movies will require some more work than they figured. Which honestly, is no bad thing –– better to wait and get it right in the hopes of an ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame’-level success, than pump out something quickly.

The sprawling cast for at least the first movie (we’re expecting several to appear in both) was first announced in a viral video Marvel put online showing director’s chairs with the actor’s names on them.

    So who can we expect?

On the longstanding MCU front, we have Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Captain America, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, Paul Rudd as Scott Lang/Ant-Man (whose chair is amusingly smaller than the others), Letitia Wright as Shuri, Wyatt Russell as John Walker/US Agent (from ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,’ who also appeared in ‘Thunderbolts*’), Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova (the main character of ‘Thunderbolts*’), David Harbour (introduced as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian in ‘Black Widow’ and who recurred in ‘Thunderbolts*’). Also from both ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’ and ‘Thunderbolts*’, Hannah John Kamen as Ava Starr/Ghost, while Lewis Pullman, introduced as “Bob” (the character we now know as Sentry), is part of the new cast.

Alongside Wright, ‘Black Panther’s Winston Duke will be back as M’Baku, and Tom Hiddleston will also return as Loki.

Simu Liu will return as Shang-Chi, a character who really has deserved a sequel before now. And Danny Ramirez, who was introduced as Joaquim Torres in ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ and reprised the role in February’s ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ will show up as the new Falcon.

On the recent addition front, there’s Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Joseph Quinn and Pedro Pascal from ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps,’ which will introduce the iconic team to the MCU on July 25th.

Any surprises? We’re not sure we predicted Tenoch Huerta Mejia –– who played Namor in ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ coming back, but his chair was among the others.

Finally, there’s the even more unexpected likes of Kelsey Grammer, who played Dr. Henry ‘Hank’ McCoy/Beast in Fox Marvel movies ‘X-Men: The Last Stand’ and ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past,’ and cropped up in a cameo as the character in ‘The Marvels,’ is also on the list.

And talking of the original Fox X-Men line-up, he’s not alone, as Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn and James Marsden were also announced.

Channing Tatum as Gambit in 'Deadpool & Wolverine'. Photo: Marvel Studios.

Likewise, Channing Tatum, who made such an impact in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ will be back as Gambit.

Finally, because you can’t really have ‘Doomsday’ without Doom, Robert Downey Jr. is making his big MCU return, this time playing classic ‘Fantastic Four’ villain Doctor Doom.

We’re sure more cast will be announced before ‘Doomsday’ arrives, but Disney has more time to get the message out.

Joe and Anthony Russo on their return

    (L to R) Joe Russo and Anthony Russo at San Diego Comic-Con 2024. © 2024 20th Century Studios / © and ™ 2024 MARVEL.
    (L to R) Joe Russo and Anthony Russo at San Diego Comic-Con 2024. © 2024 20th Century Studios / © and ™ 2024 MARVEL.

Speaking to Empire magazine, Anthony revealed that what lured them to return:

“We’re very close with Kevin [Feige] and Lou [D’Esposito, Marvel Studios’ Co-President] and the entire Marvel team and we’ve had conversations through the years. We’ve talked about a lot of ideas. Really what happened was, we ended up stumbling upon a [‘Secret Wars’] idea that activated all of us, you couldn’t see it coming until it came, and once it came it was like, ‘Well, that’s a story we need to tell.’”

And that creative spark extended to regular collaborator Stephen McFeely, who is also back writing the new movies.

While other co-writer Christopher Markus is so far sticking with the Russos’ AGBO company to keep it running, McFeely was tempted back into the MCU machine.

    Here’s what Joe told Empire:

“There were ideas that we were trying to wrap our heads around that preceded this one, and we just never found the story. I remember calling Steve and said, ‘Hey, crazy idea. What do you think if we all go back and do Secret Wars?’ He was like, ‘F*** no. Absolutely not.’ And then he hung up. And the next morning at 7.30 he called and were like, ‘Alright, I have an idea…’ ”

    What is Marvel’s ‘Secret Wars’?

(L to R) Joe Russo, Anthony Russo and Kevin Feige present 'Avengers: Secret Wars' at San Diego Comic-Con 2024. © 2024 20th Century Studios / © and ™ 2024 MARVEL.

Secret Wars’ would draw from (through the usual Marvel movie filter where changes will be made) a pair of 1980s comic book series focused on an all-powerful antagonist known as the Beyonder, who in the first installment pitted Marvel’s heroes and villains against each other on a planet known as Battleworld.

In a 2015 revival by Jonathan Hickman, the resulting conflict left the multiverse collapsed, the survivors living on a single planet ruled by classic villain Doctor Doom.

The Russos have previously talked about their enthusiasm for ‘Secret Wars,’ so this one made sense.

What other movie release dates were announced?

In a Thanos-like snap, three Marvel dates have disappeared from the calendar completely. The place holders for February 13th, 2026, November 6th, 2026, and November 5, 2027, have all been removed from Disney’s calendar, pointing towards the result of Marvel’s commitment to quality over quantity.

It wasn’t all Marvel changes –– Disney also confirmed the dates for some of the movies headed our way via its 20th Century Studios, including Ridley Scott’s post-apocalyptic thriller ‘The Dog Stars,’ starring Jacob Elordi and Josh Brolin. That one will be released on March 27th, 2026.

Then there is sequel ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2,’ which will see the return of Meryl Streep‘s imperious magazine editor Miranda Priestly as she navigates the challenges of the declining print industry. The comedy drama sequel is due on May 1st, 2026.

Finally, the company has scheduled an IMAX/3D re-release of James Cameron’s ‘Avatar: The Way of Water,’ which is set for October 3rd this year, laying the groundwork for the upcoming ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ on December 19th.

While Marvel usually prefers to keep its secrets close (at least, closer than the current government seems to manage), there is also the conflicting compulsion to promote the next movie in its sprawling cinematic universe, ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘.

We’ve known for a while that the Avengers will be back to face the threat of Victor Von Doom (Robert Downey Jr.), but the rest of the cast was largely in the realm of speculation, even for those who have been part of the MCU family for years.

The company used a livestream to confirm who will show up in the new movie, consisting of footage of the backs of director’s chairs featuring the cast names.

And Kelsey Grammer, who played Dr. Henry ‘Hank’ McCoy/Beast in Fox Marvel movies ‘X-Men: The Last Stand’ and ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past,’ and cropped up in a cameo as the character in ‘The Marvels,’ is also on the list.

There’s no word yet on whether this means his version of Beast will be the final MCU variant, but with Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn and James Marsden also announced, the X-Men clearly have a presence. Likewise, Channing Tatum, who made such an impact in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ will be back as Gambit. No sign of Ryan Reynolds or Hugh Jackman, though.

Lewis Pullman, who is introduced as a character called “Bob” (but who has since been revealed to be powerful character Sentry) in ‘Thunderbolts*’ is also listed. So we’re guessing his character –– who also appears to be an antagonist in the movie given the new trailer –– factors in somehow.

Last, but by no means least, the doors to the cavernous soundstage holding all the chairs opens up, and in strides Downey Jr., who sits in his own named chair and puts his finger to his lips. It’s over!

We’re sure there will be other announcements to come –– the company loves to hold back cameos and other roles, so we’ll have to wait and see if Tom Holland or Mark Ruffalo spoil the appearances or if an official press release arrives in due time.

If you’re desperate to see the Livestream, please click on the video player at the top of the page.

The new movie is now kicking off shooting in London, with Marvel veteran directors Joe and Anthony Russo –– who count the giant two previous Avengers outings ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame’ on their shared resume –– back marshalling the chaos that is a team-up movie on this scale.

Joe and Anthony Russo on their return

Of course, one of the biggest plot elements for the new movies has already been revealed on Marvel’s terms, with Robert Downey Jr. taking the stage at last year’s San Diego Comic-Con to confirm he’s playing Victor Von Doom.

And according to the directors he’s very involved in helping to shape the character.

This is what they told Entertainment Tonight:

“It’s a very intense process developing the character. He’s so immersed in it. He is so dialed in. That’s the kind of artist he is. That’s the kind of actor he is. He just loves really rich three-dimensional characters and I think he sees a real opportunity here with that character.”

And following ‘Doomsday,’ we’ll see ‘Secret Wars’…

    What is Marvel’s ‘Secret Wars’?

When will the next two ‘Avengers’ movies head to screens?

Marvel is planning to have ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ on screens on May 1st, 2026, followed by ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ on May 7th, 2027.

  • TV Review: ‘Paradise’

Sterling K. Brown in 'Paradise'. Photo: Hulu.
Sterling K. Brown in ‘Paradise’. Photo: Hulu.

‘Paradise’ receives 7.5 out of 10 stars.

Premiering on Hulu with its initial three episodes on January 28th followed by a weekly schedule for the remaining five, ‘Paradise’ is the latest show from Dan Fogelman, who last brought us the hugely successful (and massively tear duct-targeting) cross-generational family drama ‘This Is Us’.

Here, Fogelman is channeling more of a another show he’s been involved with (albeit more as a consultant than a showrunner), ‘Only Murders in the Building,’ though the tone here is much more geared towards mystery box thriller than the comedy stylings of the Steve Martin series.

Still, it certainly shares some elements in kind with Fogelman’s heavy network hitter, not the least of which is the presence of that show’s breakout star Sterling K. Brown, here the full lead of ‘Paradise.’

And like ‘This Is Us,’ there’s more to ‘Paradise’ than its basic logline suggests, but we’ll leave that for you to discover.

Is ‘Paradise’ a place worth visiting?

While trying to tiptoe around talking about ‘Paradise’s true nature is a frustrating experience from a critic’s point of view, that’s not to say that there isn’t plenty about the show that we can recommend.

Fogelman has clearly not lost his touch with character building, and he and the writing team make this an appealing place in which to spend time because the people filling it are complex and compelling.

Brown’s in particularly could have come across as starchier than his well-pressed suits, but as lead Secret Service agent Xavier Collins, assigned to protect a former President (James Marsden) who discovers him dead, he brings real life to the character.

Oh, and the whole dead President thing is in the trailer (and the opening minutes of the show), so we’re safe talk about that.

While not every subplot works as well as others (a growing friendship/potential relationship between Xavier’s daughter Presley played Aliyah Mastin and Charlie Evans as the late leader’s son Jeremy) feels particularly trite, though the actors still bring real charm, it’s mostly a dynamic, easy-to-enjoy series.

    Script and Direction

(L to R) James Marsden and Sterling K. Brown in ‘Paradise’. Photo: Hulu.

Fogelman brings plenty of what made ‘This Is Us’ so damnably captivating here, and the ongoing mystery plot means it also isn’t always going for your heartstrings (though there’s still plenty of that, with some well-earned moments of emotion).

He and the rest of the writers clearly enjoy playing with time, and though some of the flashbacks dotted around most of the episodes can occasionally be grating (with one or two hard to figure out exactly when they take place), they’re largely effective.

As a mystery set in a small town heavy with secrets, ‘Paradise’ certainly keeps you guessing, and almost every character has something about them that’ll make you wonder about their true motivations. It also helps that the writers have cooked up some complicated personal connections between the various personalities who call Paradise home.

Visually, the directors (Hanelle M. Culpepper, Stephen Williams and ‘This Is Us’ helmers Glenn Ficarra and John Requa handle the various episodes), bring a real sense of style and energy to the scenes, especially in certain flashbacks.

    ‘Paradise’: Performances

With Brown as its confident core, ‘Paradise’ supports him with a great ensemble.

Sterling K. Brown as Xavier Cross

Sterling K. Brown in 'Paradise'. Photo: Hulu.
Sterling K. Brown in ‘Paradise’. Photo: Hulu.

Brown, who did such good work as Randall Pearson on ‘This Is Us’ here shines as the conflicted Agent Cross, a man dedicated to protecting his boss but also burning with grief and resentment over some past issue between them. What’s that issue? That would be telling, but it’s worth noting that we’re introduced to Xavier as a single dad still mourning a lost wife.

And, as referenced earlier, Brown makes the character work so well, bringing his trademark blend of straight-arrow hero and complicated charm to the role.

James Marsden as President Cal Bradford

James Marsden in 'Paradise'. Photo: Hulu.
James Marsden in ‘Paradise’. Photo: Hulu.

Marsden’s President is a slightly smarmy, often drunken take on a Kennedy type of Commander in Chief, but the actor’s innate likeability still shows through the flaws and moods.

And yes, in case you were wondering, he does appear in more than the first 10 minutes of the show thanks to extensive flashbacks.

    Julianne Nicholson as Samantha Redmond

Julianne Nicholson in 'Paradise'. Photo: Hulu.
Julianne Nicholson in ‘Paradise’. Photo: Hulu.

Nicholson plays Samantha Redmond, a member of the President’s coterie whose nickname is “Sinatra,” but to say much more about her would be to get too deep into the initial mystery.

Suffice to say, however, that Nicholson takes a role that could be one-note and, thanks to clever use of her own flashbacks, makes it work.

Sarah Shahi as Dr. Gabriela Torabi

Sarah Shahi in 'Paradise'. Photo: Hulu.
Sarah Shahi in ‘Paradise’. Photo: Hulu.

A genius psychologist brought in to help with the murder investigation, Torabi is a good role for Shahi, and she brings her usual likeability and spine of steel to the part.

    Gerald McRaney as Bradford Sr.

Gerald McRaney in 'Paradise'. Photo: Hulu.
Gerald McRaney in ‘Paradise’. Photo: Hulu.

McRaney, another ‘This Is Us’ alum, is good value as Cal’s crochety father who is still imposing despite a slow decline in health.

    Final Thoughts

Sterling K. Brown in 'Paradise'. Photo: Hulu.
Sterling K. Brown in ‘Paradise’. Photo: Hulu.

How you react to ‘Paradise’ might depend on your tolerance for mystery box shows that dole out information piecemeal. However, unlike some recent examples, Fogelman’s effort puts some of its bigger cards out on the table early, allowing you to then delve into the wider story.

The characters for the most part work well and the writing, while occasionally overwrought, services a game cast.

And even the odd trope, such as one character promising to reveal what they know leading to an entirely predictable murder shortly thereafter is tweaked in such as way as to keep you from rolling your eyes too hard.

  • Movie Review: ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’

(L to R) Jim Carrey as Ivo Robotnik and Sonic (Ben Schwartz) in 'Sonic the Hedgehog 3' from Paramount Pictures and Sega of America, Inc.
(L to R) Jim Carrey as Ivo Robotnik and Sonic (Ben Schwartz) in ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ from Paramount Pictures and Sega of America, Inc.

Opening in theaters on December 20th, ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ marks the third outing for the popular movie franchise spawned by the video game character best known for super speed and collecting rings.

The former is on full display in this new film, which reunites much of the major players from the previous movies, while the idea of the portal rings largely takes a backseat (aside from a couple of key moments).

And this movie offers largely more of the same, albeit with a little more entertainment value from the occasionally stalled second entry.

(L to R) Knuckles (Idris Elba), Sonic (Ben Schwartz) and Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey) in ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ from Paramount Pictures and Sega of America, Inc.

The ‘Sonic’ movies by this point are certainly a known quantity. You have Ben Schwartz providing chatty energy as the lead character. Solid support from the likes of Idris Elba and Colleen O’Shaughnessey as fellow video game-birthed characters Knuckles and Tails respectively (since this is a franchise that employs the strategy of hoovering up characters from previous installments and turning rivals into family). Lots of silly gags. Jim Carrey snacking on the scenery in pure pantomime fashion.

‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ doesn’t break any of these rules, but it does deploy them effectively, while wrapping in much of the love-can-triumph-over-vengeance themes and making good choices concepts that parents might hope for (even if we’ve seen them many, many times before).

    Script and Direction

(L to R) Director Jeff Fowler and Jim Carrey on the set of 'Sonic The Hedgehog 3' from Paramount Pictures and Sega.
(L to R) Director Jeff Fowler and Jim Carrey on the set of ‘Sonic The Hedgehog 3’ from Paramount Pictures and Sega.

The script from returning writing veterans Pat Casey, Josh Miller and John Whittington is also hewn from familiar rock. We’re re-introduced to Sonic and friends attempting to get in some downtime at a campsite (while also celebrating the anniversary of the spiky hero’s arrival on Earth), only for a powerful new threat (Keanu Reeves’ Shadow the Hedgehog) to put those plans on hold.

It’s full of what you expect from a ‘Sonic’ movie but put together with enough style and fun to make it worthwhile. The dynamics between the various characters are established and there are enough surprising new elements (more on that when we get to the “performances” section) to keep things moving at a decent clip.

(L to R) Director Jeff Fowler and Jim Carrey on the set of ‘Sonic The Hedgehog 3’ from Paramount Pictures and Sega.

While there are some expected, slightly mawkish emotional moments along the way, there’s also some welcome undercutting of such easily exploited tropes. The story is never really the most important element –– expect the usual world-threatening McGuffin and a new antagonist with emotional issues.

As director, Jeff Fowler is also well versed in bringing the ‘Sonic’ universe to life, and he’s still on the top of his game here. The human characters (aside from Carrey’s) are mostly shoved to the sidelines (though James Marsden and Tika Sumpter do get a few decent moments) and the focus is on our titular hero.

The effects are still up to a decent, slightly cartoony standard (the days of “ugly sonic” are long behind us) and the action moves along at a solid clip.

    Cast and Performances

(L to R) Sonic (Ben Schwartz), Knuckles (Idris Elba), Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey, James Marsden as Tom and Tika Sumpter as Maddie in ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ from Paramount Pictures and Sega of America, Inc.

The central combination of Schwartz’s winning motormouth delivery as Sonic and Carrey’s try-anything zaniness can eclipse all else, but there is a solid antagonist this time around.

    Ben Schwartz as Sonic

Sonic (Ben Schwartz) in 'Sonic the Hedgehog 3' from Paramount Pictures and Sega of America, Inc.
Sonic (Ben Schwartz) in ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ from Paramount Pictures and Sega of America, Inc.

Schwartz has really leaned into the fun as Sonic, and even though he’s only ever in a recording booth for the role, his contribution is clear. You can imagine the sheer number of alternate line-readings for each moment, and the actor delivers both the laughs and the emotional moments effectively.

Jim Carrey as Ivo Robotnik/Gerald Robotnik

(L to R) Jim Carrey as Ivo Robotnik and Gerald Robotnik in 'Sonic the Hedgehog 3' from Paramount Pictures and Sega of America, Inc.
(L to R) Jim Carrey as Ivo Robotnik and Gerald Robotnik in ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ from Paramount Pictures and Sega of America, Inc.

If you’ve seen the trailer, you know that the third ‘Sonic’ features double the Jim Carrey. Reports of Ivo Robotnik’s death at the end of the second movie are naturally exaggerated and he’s back. This time, Carrey not only gets to play a new side of the not-so-good Doctor, who we first meet here as a lazy slob binge-watching telenovelas.

But we’re also introduced to his grandfather Gerald, whose story is tied in with Shadow’s, and has some emotional resonance. The gusto with which he throws himself into the dual role is something to watch, and if this is what an actor does when they’re just picking up a paycheck (as he himself recently admitted, then other performers take note!

Keanu Reeves as Shadow the Hedgehog

Shadow (Keanu Reeves) in 'Sonic the Hedgehog 3' from Paramount Pictures and Sega of America, Inc.
Shadow (Keanu Reeves) in ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ from Paramount Pictures and Sega of America, Inc.

The main casting coup this time is playing the man who was Neo as the new “villain”, though with the actor’s soulful turns, he’s more than that. Reeves commits to the role of the bitter, vengeful character and works well against Schwartz’s excited energy.

    Idris Elba as Knuckles

Knuckles (Idris Elba) in 'Sonic the Hedgehog 3' from Paramount Pictures and Sega of America, Inc.
Knuckles (Idris Elba) in ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ from Paramount Pictures and Sega of America, Inc.

While Elba is typically low-key, he’s found a good gear as the echidna warrior, who is always ready for a fight, but is slowly coming to realize that being around Sonic and the rest is good for him.

    Supporting Cast

(L to R) Tika Sumpter plays Maddie and James Marsden plays Tom in 'Sonic The Hedgehog 3' from Paramount Pictures and Sega of America; Inc.
(L to R) Tika Sumpter plays Maddie and James Marsden plays Tom in ‘Sonic The Hedgehog 3’ from Paramount Pictures and Sega of America; Inc.

As mentioned, human co-stars James Marsden and Tika Sumpter are certainly moved slightly to the side (though they both have roles to play in the finale). Colleen O’Shaughnessey is an effervescent Tails and there’s a welcome emotional growth even for the likes of Lee Majdoub’s Agent Stone, Robotnik’s loyal sidekick, who here sees some competition in the grandfather character.

    Final Thoughts

While it certainly doesn’t re-invent the wheel when it comes to a ‘Sonic’ adventure, it has enough laughs to keep the family engaged.

And, of course, you’re encouraged to stay through the credits for the contractual tease of what might be to come in the future (yes, ‘Sonic 4’ was announced just before the release of this one.)

While Paramount touted the success of its ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ franchise at its big CinemaCon presentation last week (and showed a footage snippet of the upcoming third entry –– more on that below), the studio stopped short of announcing who would be voicing Shadow the Hedgehog, a new character (at least in the movies) who will be causing trouble for our hero.

But now, thanks to The John Campea Show (and since confirmed by the trades), the news has leaked that no less an actor than Keanu Reeves will be providing the voice for shadow. With ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ wrapped for a while and post-production already under way, we assume he’s already started in the voice booth or will be reporting for duty shortly.

Nothing has been officially released about the story for the new ‘Sonic’ movie, though we can predict more speedy behavior from the main character and a fresh devious scheme from Robotnik, though the footage shown at CinemaCon shows Jim Carrey’s villain as out of shape and depressed, only to get his groove back when he creates Shadow, described as a dark twin for the titular hero.

How James Marsden’s Tom Wachowski figures in this time remains to be seen, and we’ll also see the return of Sonic’s fellow CG creations Knuckles (voiced by Idris Elba) and Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey). Ben Schwartz, of course, returns to voice Sonic.

Rumors have suggested a potential trip through time and the film’s social media account kicked off the start of shoot with a teaser for Shadow.

Shadow, created by Takashi Iizuka and Shiro Maekawa, first appeared in 2001’s ‘Sonic Adventure 2’.

In the games’ canon, he was created by Professor Gerald Robotnik, the grandfather of the series’ antagonist Doctor Robotnik. After witnessing the death of his best friend Maria Robotnik, Shadow initially seeks revenge, but later vows to keep his promise to her that he would protect the world from danger. An antihero, Shadow has good intentions but will do whatever it takes to accomplish his goals, putting him at odds with Sonic.

From the sounds of it, the movie is tweaking his origin story to bring in more of the movie’s narrative, but we’ll see how it all shakes out.

Premiering on November 17th on Netflix is the third and final season of the popular series ‘Dead To Me,’ which was created by Liz Feldman.

The series stars Christina Applegate (‘Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy’) as Jen Harding and Linda Cardellini (‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’) plays Judy Hale. In the aftermath of yet another hit and run, both women receive shocking news, and are ready to risk their lives for a friendship that’s above the law.

The new season will also see the return of James Marsden (‘Disenchanted’) as Steve and Ben Wood, respectively.

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Linda Cardellini, James Marsden, and series creator Liz Feldman about the third and final season of ‘Dead To Me,’ how they wanted to end the show, their character arcs, the challenges of playing two roles, and their favorite memories of shooting the series.

Moviefone: To begin with, Liz, was it always your plan to end the series after three seasons?

Liz Feldman: The truth is no. I didn’t necessarily know how I was going to end the series when I started the series. But about halfway through season two, this ending sort of came to me, because I was racking my brain, how do you bring closure to these characters? How do I bring this full circle?

This is how I decided to do it. I actually told Linda, basically that day that I thought of it, I said, “I think this is what I’m going to do.” I just explored the ideas that you see in season three, and I really went for it with the hope that I would bring closure, and a satisfying ending for the audience.

MF: Linda, when you start a new season, do you know your character’s arc for the entire season, or do you go script to script?

Linda Cardellini: I always ask a million questions. Liz knows, so she always tells me as much as she knows, which is really fun for us. That’s sort of our creative relationship. But then there are always things within the script that I did not imagine. There are always big turns and twists, but there are also these micro turns and twists all along that really surprise you as an actor and in your character.

There’s something in the season that happens. It happens to somebody else and it’s really happening. So, there’s a lot of things that happen that you can’t quite predict. There are smaller things and bigger things. I always know the bigger things, I think for the most part. But the smaller things still surprise me day to day. Sometimes she’ll say, “I’m not going to tell you this cause I want you to be surprised when you read it,” and then I know it’s something good.

MF: James, can you talk about the challenges of playing two separate characters on the same series?

James Marsden: Yes, it has been, but it’s been fun. I feel really honored that Liz believed in me to tackle this together, we do it together. The writing is such that it really does keep you buoyant, and it’s less scary when the writing’s really strong. I mean that. I think it’s, again, part of the fun about being an actor, is being able to transform yourself and play different characters with different personality traits. I think the more different they are, the easier it is to go the other direction.

But it is challenging, because you don’t want it to feel like a gimmick. You don’t want it to feel like a trick or anything. You want it to feel authentic and real. It’s really just looking at each of these characters as two separate people, almost like two separate projects. Like, who’s this individual completely, and then, who’s this individual completely.

MF: Finally, now that the series is ending, what is your favorite memory from the entire production?

LF: I mean, it’s nearly impossible to boil it down to just one. The truth is the gift that I will take with me, are the relationships, because I didn’t know these wonderful people before we started working together. Now I know them, but beyond knowing them, I love them and they are my friends. I will carry them with me for the rest of my life.

I think about the moments that we shared on set, too numerous to mention, very often at three o’clock in the morning, huddling over some hot tea, with big puffy coats, and looking at each other bleary-eyed, but just happy that we get to hang out. So, that’s what I will miss, and it’s what I’ll take with me.

JM: I love that. I feel the same way. It has been one giant beautiful moment from day one on this show. Anytime Liz, because she knows, you don’t have to put a nickel in me to make a fool of myself, I will do it in a heartbeat. So, anytime my character’s just being an absolute buffoon, I just love it.

I don’t know, as an actor, I love playing those types of characters where they think they’ve got it going on, but they don’t. I guess I like making fun of myself, and she allows me to. But that’s my own personal thing with the character. But the journey through this, these three seasons has just been so wonderfully rewarding. I have these beautiful friendships that have come out, that have sprung from this experience. That’s what I’ll take with me.

LC: My favorite memory? I mean, there’s so much, I don’t know. But I will say what I will miss. I will miss Jen and Judy. I will miss them. There is something about Jen and Judy that is obviously very Linda and Christina, but the writing, and the community, and the relationships that we have with each other are so special. Then just the way that you’ve written these two women and their friendship, I will just really miss playing that. I had such a good time doing that.
