    • David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult are expected to return.
    • James Gunn is writing and directing.

It might not have been a completely soaraway success at the box office this summer, but ‘Superman’, DC Studios co-chief James Gunn’s cinematic kick off to his new take on the comic book universe certainly performed well enough that a follow-up is now in the works.

Gunn himself had already said that he was in the writing phase for a new movie, and he has now taken to social media to tease that it’ll be flying into theaters on July 9th, 2027.

While there are few clear details on the movie so far, Gunn’s choice of image for the post (see below) does seem to indicate that at least David Corenswet will be back as Superman, alongside Nicholas Hoult as the scheming Lex Luthor.

Gunn is keeping this one close to his chest for now. The filmmaker has previously clarified that it won’t be a direct sequel to ‘Superman’, but the image of Supes and Lex certainly does point to a return for the hero and villain of the movie.

The ‘Superman: The Man of Tomorrow’ DC Comics series ran for 16 issues from 1995 to 1999, and there is an animated adaptation already.

But like ‘Superman’ before it, don’t expect this to be a straight adaptation, instead we know that Gunn will be picking and choosing what he wants to use, and once more bringing his own sensibilities to bear on the story.

We’d be surprised if the likes of Rachel Brosnahan and Skyler Gisondo didn’t return as Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen respectively, but we’ll have to wait and see whether the likes of the Justice Gang or any of the other supporting characters show up.

And what of breakout star Krypto, though we know we’re getting more of the chaotic canine when ‘Supergirl’ lands next year (more on that in a moment? Even if he doesn’t crash the follow-up movie, we can perhaps hope for a limited series run of him and ‘Peacemaker’s Eagly teaming up?

What else is going on with the rebooted DC movie universe?

Next up in movie terms is ‘Supergirl’, starring Milly Alcock, who –– spoiler alert in case you still haven’t seen ‘Superman’ –– showed up for a quick seen at the end of that movie to pick up Krypto. That film is due out on June 26th next year.

Following that we have a dip into horror with ‘Clayface’, the tale of the Batman antagonist, which has James Watkins directing and Tom Rhys Harries starring. It’ll head to theaters on September 11th, 2026.

And finally on the actually confirmed front there is ‘Lanterns’ featuring two of the Green Lantern characters, with the show headed to HBO Max next year (but with no official date announced yet).

    • ‘Superman’ had its home release only one month after its theatrical release, which seems very early for a big comic book movie.
    • After the events of ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2, this makes sense.
    • Fans who missed ‘Superman’ in theaters will want to watch it since it has ties to the second season of ‘Peacemaker’.

When the home release date of ‘Superman‘ was first released, many people felt it was way too soon. Not only is the movie still playing in theaters, it is still bringing in money. A home release date of August 15th is just 35 days after its theatrical release. This is quick for any movie, but for a comic book movie? It is almost unheard of.

Then, after watching the first episode of ‘Peacemaker‘, it became instantly clear why DC Studios did this. The events of ‘Superman’ tie into key plot points of this season and while it is not required viewing, it certainly helps with the storytelling.

At the end of ‘Peacemaker’ Season 1, fans lost their minds when the Justice League showed up. Now that the DCEU has gone the way of the buffalo, and the DCU is the new canon, James Gunn needed to correct a few things. To no one’s surprise, he did so brilliantly, proving what a mastermind he is.

‘Peacemaker’ Season 2 starts off with a “Previously On” however, it highlights that it is the DCU, not the DCEU. Because of this some events are slightly altered, with the major one being that instead of the Justice League showing up, it is the Justice Gang, who are prominently featured in ‘Superman’. This includes Nathan Fillion (Guy Gardener), Isabela Mercad (Hawkgirl), and Edi Gathegi (Mister Terrific).

‘Superman’ Events Are Referenced Multiple Times In ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2

Also in the premiere episode of ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2 is an interview between Christopher Smith (John Cena), also known as Peacemaker, and the Justice Gang, which he hopes to join. While Mr. Terrific is absent, Hawk Girl, Guy Gardener, and Maxwell Lord (Sean Gunn) are present. They mostly poke fun at Peacemaker, delivering a hilarious scene.

There are also several times in this episode (and later in the season) that the “Luther event” is mentioned. This is, of course, in reference to the pocket universe that Lex Luther (Nicholas Hoult) opened up, nearly destroying Metropolis in the process. Frank Grillo also reprises his role as Rick Flag Sr., who is acting director or A.R.G.U.S. while Amanda Waller is being investigated.

Early Home Release For ‘Superman’ Just Makes Sense Now

With all of these ties to James Gunn’s ‘Superman’, it makes sense why DC Studios opted to give it a home release. As mentioned, it is not necessary to watch it in order to understand what it happening in ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2, but it will give you more insight into why A.R.G.U.S. is so afraid of dimensional rifts.

Also, because the Justice Gang is in the series, although not often, seeing ‘Superman’ allows viewers to get to know them and their dynamic a little bit more, rather than being thrust into the chaotic conversation that is going on during Peacemaker’s interview without any backstory.

The best part? If you so wish, you can still see ‘Superman’ in theaters, as it is still playing.

It has been over three years since ‘Peacemaker‘ Season 1, but the time has finally arrived for Season 2 to grace our screens. The new, highly anticipated season premieres Thursday, August 21st on HBO Max at 9 pm ET/PT.

John Cena returns as Christopher Smith, also known as Peacemaker, in the lead role. He is joined by the rest of the 11th Street Kids – Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland), John Economos (Steve Agee), Vigilante (Freddie Stroma), and Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks). Season 2 is written by James Gunn, however he only directs three episodes with Peter Sollett, Greg Mottola, and Alethea Jones stepping in to direct the others.

    Initial Thoughts

John Cena in ‘Peacemaker’ season 2. Photo: Jessica Miglio/Max.

‘Peacemaker’ Season 2 has the daunting task of transitioning from the DC Extended Universe to the new DC Universe. When he became co-CEO of DC James Gunn stated that the majority of previous projects would not be canon in this new universe, with the exception of a few things, including ‘Peacemaker’ Season 1.

That said, it did need to be slightly altered. Because of this, many fans are going to be cautiously optimistic going in. Have no fear, the adjustments are adressed from the very start of the season – be sure you don’t skip the “Previously in the DCU” section.

    Script and Direction

Jennifer Holland in 'Peacemaker' season 2. Photo: Jessica Miglio/Max.
Jennifer Holland in ‘Peacemaker’ season 2. Photo: Jessica Miglio/Max.

Thankfully, James Gunn is a brilliant storyteller, so he was able to do this seamlessly, not leaving room for any questions or confusion. As always, he takes the time to put a love and appreciation into the scripts that he is writing and knows how to tell a good story.

Stepping back into this wacky world, with these characters who are often down on their luck, might have taken longer than viewers would have liked, but all can be forgiven because the first five episodes of the season (which is what press were given for review purposes) are great.

As seen in the trailers, Peacemaker discovers another dimension in which the grass seems a whole lot greener. This forces him to look deep inside himself and decide what he truly wants out of life.

At the same time, the rest of the 11th Street Kids are dealing with their own issues. No one has it easy, but isn’t that true to the nature of the world? We are all going through something at any given time. It is this relatability that will have viewers hanging onto every word.

Multiverses are hard to explain, and very difficult to keep the attention of the audience. It needs to be done exactly right to make sense and thanks to great writing and direction, ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2 perfectly transitions from the DCEU to DCU.

It is not required to see ‘Superman‘ before diving into this new season. There are mentions of the events of the film, and even though they do play a key role in the series, it does a great job of letting viewers know the details they need to. That said, it will certainly enhance the viewing exprience if you have seen it.

    Cast and Performances

Due to the nature of this season of ‘Peacemaker’, much of the cast has to flex their strengths as actors. Some of them are playing two versions of themselves while others are playing different versions of the characters we got to know in season one. It is always impressive when someone can pull this off and to have so many of them doing it in multiple episodes is no easy feat.

The chemistry between the cast is what has always been at the center of this series. That is what made these misfits so lovable. Something that James Gunn has always been good at is making viewers care about people that are not always perfect – sometimes far from it. But it is the stellar performances and the way the actors dove into these characters that made them unforgettable.

John Cena does a wonderul job as Peacemaker, especially taking into consideration the diliema he is put in almost immediately. It is easy to see the internal struggle he is putting himself through, which makes it impossible not to root for him even more.

Jennifer Holland once again shines as Emilia Harcourt. She knows how to give her a hard exterior that fans want to see be chipped away. Every so often we get a peek at a softer side, but don’t be fooled, she knows how to kick serious butt, and we love to watch it.

Frank Grillo in 'Peacemaker' season 2. Photo: Jessica Miglio/Max.
Frank Grillo in ‘Peacemaker’ season 2. Photo: Jessica Miglio/Max.

Season 2 delivers more of the same, but not in a redundant way. There are a lot of heartfelt and emotional conversations being had. Some rifts are formed, which become difficult to watch, but surely keeps things interesting. The same off-the-wall humor is there with moments that might send you into laughing fits.

Of course the entire returning cast is wonderful. It is clear they know these characters inside and out. That said, Frank Grillo coming in as Rick Flag Sr. is one of the biggest standouts of ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2. He voiced this character in ‘Creature Commandos‘ and briefly appeared as him in live-action in ‘Superman’, but his journey in this series is completely captivating. He is extremely vulnerable, but also volatile, and easily one of the best written characters of the season from what we have seen so far.

    Final Thoughts

‘Peacemaker’ Season 2 is able to capture the same craziness of the first season. Writer James Gunn knows how to tell a story that will have fans cracking up one minute and wiping away tears the next. Having to retcon some events can be a scary situation, but he handled this wonderfully.

It is lovely to see these characters together on screen again. With just three episodes to follow, it is hard to say where things will go, but the stakes are high, as are the emotions. There has to be a reason they were held back from press, and considering the end of episode five, the possibilities seem endless.

What’s the story of ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2?

In season 2, Peacemaker (Cena) discovers an alternate world where life is everything he wishes it could be. But this discovery also forces him to face his traumatic past and take the future into his own hands.

Who is in the cast of ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2?

    • John Cena as Christopher Smith / Peacemaker
    • Danielle Brooks as Leota Adebayo
    • Freddie Stroma as Adrian Chase / Vigilante
    • Jennifer Holland as Emilia Harcourt
    • Steve Agee as John Economos
    • Robert Patrick as Auggie Smith

If you’re not up to date on the muddy man-monster, here’s your basic briefing on Clayface as a character.

Created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane, the original Clayface, Basil Karlo, appeared in Detective Comics #40, published in June 1940, as a B-list actor who began a life of crime using the identity of a villain that he had portrayed in a horror film.

Kane stated that the character was partially inspired by the 1925 Lon Chaney version of ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ and that his name was derived from Boris Karloff and Basil Rathbone.

The Reporter’s sources say the story focuses on an ascending actor (Harries) whose face is disfigured by a gangster. As a last resort, the actor turns to a fringe Elizabeth Holmes-style scientist (Ackie) for help. Minghella will play a Gotham City detective dating Ackie’s character.

He’s also a directed, having made ‘Teen Spirit’ and the upcoming ‘Shell’, which premiered last year at the Toronto International Film Festival and is in cinemas at the end of the week. The film stars Elisabeth Moss, Kate Hudson and Kaia Gerber.

Minghella most recently worked on the fourth season of HBO series ‘Industry’, which should be on screens next year.

When will the Clayface movie be in theaters?

The movie has a scheduled plan for a UK shoot at Leavesden Studios in place, and Warner Bros. and DC Studios are confirming a September 11th, 2026 theatrical release for ‘Clayface’.

Little is known officially about what Robert Pattinson’s Caped Crusader will tackle, but we do know that Colin Farrell is likely to return as Oz Cobb, the villainous gangster nicknamed “The Penguin” while ‘The Batman’ actors Andy Serkis (Alfred) and Jeffrey Wright (James Gordon) are also predicted to be back.

We can probably expect to see Batman tackle another menace from his rogues’ gallery, with Barry Keoghan teased as a potential Joker at the end of the original movie, but nothing confirmed about him actually playing the role.

And there had been chatter about Clayface, but with the character set to get his own movie within the main DC Studios universe (as opposed to ‘The Batman’, which falls under the ‘Elseworlds’ banner of movies/TV that don’t fit there), we’d expect someone else to threaten our hero.

One other interesting nugget from the shareholders letter is a comment from WB CEO David Zaslav about how Gunn will be both the writer and director on a new instalment for what said features the ‘Super Family’.

Which does echo Gunn’s previous comments that he’s working on a follow-up to this summer’s ‘Superman’, but one that won’t directly feature David Corenswet’s hero in the lead (though he will be part of the movie).

Gunn himself replied to a fan on Threads confirming that he’s well into the scripting process.

That’s a little behind ‘Superman’s $120 million opening, but more than enough to be celebrated as a success for Marvel following the underperformance of ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ and ‘Thunderbolts*’.

How did ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ perform internationally?

This latest Marvel effort stretched to $218M global opening, with $100 million from international markets..

The overseas debut is 13% ahead of ‘Thunderbolts*’, 11% ahead of ‘Superman’ and 4% above ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ and more importantly, ahead of projections.

For its part, ‘Superman’ has now topped the half-billion milestone, now at $502.7M worldwide, including $213.2M from international.

Now we’ll have to see how ‘Fantastic Four’ performs going forward. In its favor, it only really has ‘Superman’ as direct competition in terms of genre and audience for a few weeks.

What else happened at the box office this weekend?

‘Superman’ slipped to second place after two weeks at the top –– earning $24.9 million from 3,930 screens, a 57% decline from last weekend. The movie has generated $289.5 million domestically and $502.7 million globally.
Third place went to ‘Jurassic World Rebirth,’ which made $13 million from 3,550 venues in its fourth weekend.

The dinosaur outing has grossed $301 million in North America and $718 million globally, which is impressive, but still behind the other ‘Jurassic World’ franchise entries, which all crossed the $1 billion mark.

Fourth past the post was ‘F1′, the Brad Pitt-starring racing movie set in the world of Formula One.

It took $6.2 million in its fifth lap around the track. That’s a 37% decline from the previous weekend, bringing ticket sales to $165.6 million domestically and $509 million worldwide. Decent, but it carries a hefty $250 million plus budget and anyway, backers Apple are not so worried about theatrical returns as other companies.

Finally, Paramount’s animated musical ‘Smurfs’ rounded out the top five with $5.4 million from 3,504 venues, a 50% drop from its disappointing $11 million debut.

So far, the family film has earned $22.7 million at the domestic box office and $46 million internationally for a worldwide tally of $69 million. Not great!

    What’s next for the MCU?

Up next for Marvel is animated Disney+ series ‘Eyes of Wakanda’, spun off from the ‘Black Panther’ movies, and ‘Wonder Man’, starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.

In terms of movies, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ will be out in July next year, followed by giant team-up effort ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ due the following December.

    • ‘Peacemaker’s second season brought DC to Hall H.
    • Show creator James Gunn and star John Cena were among those on the panel.
    • Gunn talked up where the season fits into the DC Universe.

Who would have imagined that ‘Peacemaker’, designed as a spin-off from James Gunn’s 2021 DC movie ‘The Suicide Squad’, would be one of the few elements to remain in place once the filmmaker took over DC Studios and began building out his own mythology.

Well, Gunn, obviously, as he’s using Season 2 of the show to expand on the story he started telling in this summer’s ‘Superman’.

    tj0MlYZpL4B5pcVJfoIJe1

And Comic-Con was naturally the place for him to show off new looks at the returning series, which has John Cena starring as the blundering, blustering vigilante, alongside offering hints of other DC Studios projects going forward.

In season 2, Peacemaker (Cena) discovers an alternate world where life is everything he wishes it could be. But this discovery also forces him to face his traumatic past and take the future into his own hands.

To the surprise of almost no one, Cena showed up in full Peacemaker costume. He does this a lot for promotional events. Hope he has them washed in between appearances.

Gunn had this to say about how the show connects with ‘Superman’:

“The show happens a month after the events in ‘Superman’. There’s a lot of the characters [who] return in [this] season of ‘Peacemaker’. In the very first episode, we have Guy Gardner, but there’s a lot more as we go down the line. But it is definitely a part of the DCU now.”

Lest you forget, Guy Gardner is played by Nathan Fillion, reprising his ‘Superman’ role.

A clip (which will not be publicly released) from the new season was shown to attendees, featuring Holland’s Emilia Harcourt kicking ass in a bar but a new trailer is now online:

    Bpj7G4CK

The new season will see Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr. seeking revenge for Peacemaker having killed his son (in ‘The Suicide Squad’). And our hero –– to stretch the term to its widest interpretation — seeks a new life in an alternate dimension where he really does get to be a good guy.

There was also a look at the new opening credits –– still a dance number, but with new music and some different characters added.

And Gunn reveals that the music will, as is usual for his projects, be on point:

“I mean, first of all, I think the soundtrack this season is my favorite soundtrack I’ve ever done. It’s so good with so many bands I love. It is in line with the soundtrack from the first season, but it’s a lot more modern bands, actually a lot more songs from the past, you know, 10-15, years or so.”

When will ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2 be on screens?

‘Peacemaker’ Season 2 lands on HBO Max on August 21st with its first episode, followed by seven more episodes weekly.

'Peacemaker' season 2 premieres on HBO Max August 21st.

    • ‘Supergirl’ writer Ana Nogueira will develop a new ‘Wonder Woman’ movie.
    • It’ll feature a new take on the Amazonian warrior.
    • DC Studios also has a TV series set on the character’s birth island in development.

As the latest incarnation the DC movie universe takes flight thanks to DC Studios co-chief (and writer/director James Gunn’s ‘Superman’, another big name from the comic company’s ranks is taking a step forward on her own new solo outing.

Ana Nogueira, who wrote next year’s ‘Supergirl’, has now, via The Wrap, been hired to script a Wonder Woman movie.

    OT00arSyAacXCGscjvNND4

The news follows Gunn’s own sentiments on the matter, having dropped word that a Wonder Woman script is in the works.

What else is Ana Nogueira working on?

Nogueira is becoming a popular writer for the DC team. As mentioned, she’s already written ‘Supergirl’, which Craig Gillespie has directed with Milly Alcock starring as Kara Zor-El, Superman’s cousin.

She’s also been working on a live-action take on the ‘Teen Titans’ characters, though development on that one is under wraps for now.

What else is happening with Wonder Woman?

Gal Gadot as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman in 'Wonder Woman 1984.'
Gal Gadot as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman in ‘Wonder Woman 1984.’

The new movie would be a fresh start for the character, who was played on the big screen by Gal Gadot in 2017’s ‘Wonder Woman’ and ‘Justice League’, 2020’s ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ and in a cameo in 2023’s ‘The Flash.’

When Gunn and Peter Safran were announced as taking over running Warner Bros.’ DC arm (which would go on to be named DC Studios), there was much speculation about whether any of the actors from the Zack Snyder era, including Gadot and ‘Man of Steel’s Henry Cavill, would stay in their roles.

Despite comments from Gadot that she and Patty Jenkins (who had co-written and directed the previous two standalone Wonder Woman outings) were developing a third movie for the character, the DC Studios duo appeared to be steering more towards a complete refresh of the comic book universe.

Gunn and Safran’s initial outline showed they had other ideas for Diana. When they unveiled their first plans around another Wonder Woman project, ‘Paradise Lost.’

It’s a TV series set on Themyscira, the birthplace of Princess Diana, and described as ‘Game Of Thrones’ with the Amazons. It’s set before Diana is born.

Here’s what Gunn said about the show at the time:

“It’s an origin story of how this society of women came about. What does it mean? What are their politics like? What are their rules? Who’s in charge? What are the games that they play with each other to get to the top? I think it’s really exciting.”

And it would seem that, as with Superman, when and if Wonder Woman does return to big screens, she’ll be played by someone new.

What’s the future for DC Studios?

As mentioned above, Gunn and Safran already have plans in place for an interconnected series of movies and TV series, with ‘Supergirl’ due on June 26th next year, followed by ‘Clayface’ in September the same year and HBO Max series ‘Lanterns’ in production now.
