  • ‘Avatar 2’ Delayed Again, Won’t Make Christmas 2017 Release Date

The upcoming trio of sequels to James Cameron’s “Avatar” have been delayed yet again, with news that “Avatar 2” will not make its scheduled 2017 release date as planned.

TheWrap reports that the planned Christmas 2017 release has officially been pushed, as Cameron continues prepping for the daunting shoot, which was to have taken place back-to-back-to-back to accommodate for releasing one film in each of three consecutive years. No new release date for “Avatar 2” has been announced yet.

This is the second time that the sequels have had to adjust their release schedule: “Avatar 2” was originally slated to hit theaters in December 2016, with “Avatar 3” and “Avatar 4” following in 2017 and 2018. After the first delay, that schedule was amended to 2017, 2018, and 2019.

According to TheWrap, Cameron remains committed to his ambitious shooting plan, and still intends to film the entire trilogy of sequels in one swoop in New Zealand. “Soundstage construction and some computer animation work is in the early stages, but a start date for filming has not been set,” the site says.

The original “Avatar,” released in 2009, remains the world’s highest-grossing flick internationally, and it looks unlikely that “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” will overtake its daunting $2.8 billion haul. The only real challengers, it seems, are the “Avatar” sequels themselves; it remains to be seen, however, just when they’ll make their long-awaited debut.

    Stay tuned.

  • ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Dethrones ‘Avatar’ as No. 1 Movie Ever

UPDATE: It’s official. On Wednesday, January 6, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” officially passed “Avatar” at the box office to become the top-grossing movie in North America. Ever. As Variety reported, “…the seventh film in the space opera saga surpassed ‘Avatar’s’ $760.5 million lifetime gross in just 20 days of release.” Congratulations! Now on to the global title…

    Original post (1/4/16):

Spare a thought for James Cameron this week. He’s probably giving in to The Dark Side right about now, plotting revenge against director J.J. Abrams.

Abrams’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has already played the role of iceberg to Cameron’s “Titanic” as the second highest-grossing movie in domestic box office history (that’s what Jack gets for letting go), and Variety estimates that Episode VII will dethrone the real king of the world, “Avatar,” within a week.

    As Variety put it:

“Avatar” earned $760.5 million during its stateside run, and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has generated $740.4 million domestically after picking up $88.3 million over New Year’s weekend. It should take the crown from “Avatar” early next week.

That’s just the domestic haul, though. Worldwide, “The Force Awakens” is currently still No. 6 in history, but it’s quickly on its way to passing “Furious 7” and “Marvel’s The Avengers,” and there’s expectation that it may pass “Avatar” at the global box office, especially if China gets behind it.
It’s OK, man. You had a good run.

Collider recently offered some domestic and global box office comparisons, so we know the milestones ahead:

    Rank Title Domestic Gross
    1. Avatar $760,507.625
    2. Titanic $658,672,302
    3. Jurassic World $652,270,625
    4. Star Wars: The Force Awakens $651,965,583* (this was as of 3 days ago; it’s now 2nd & closing in on 1st)
    5. Marvel’s The Avengers $623,357,910

    9. Avengers: Age of Ultron $459,005,868
    10. The Dark Knight Rises $448,139,099

Rank Title Worldwide Gross (in Millions)
    1. Avatar $2,788.0
    2. Titanic $2,186.8
    3. Jurassic World $1,669.0
    4. Marvel’s The Avengers $1,519.6
    5. Furious 7 $1,515.0
    6. Avengers: Age of Ultron $1,405.0

  • ‘Terminator 2’ Is Getting a 3D Re-Release for 25th Anniversary

Arnold Schwarzenegger DID say he’d be back. He never mentioned how many times, but “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” — the best in the franchise — is returning to theaters in 2016 through a special digitally remastered 3D re-release.

Director James Cameron himself is working with DMG Entertainment and StudioCanal to supervise and produce the T2 3D conversion. “Next year marks the 25th anniversary of Terminator 2 and that seemed like the perfect time to bring it back but this time in an all-new 3D version,” Cameron said (via The Hollywood Reporter). “If you’ve never seen it, this’ll be the version you want to see and remember.”

According to THR, they are aiming for a worldwide release, but a main target is said to be China. Not only does the “Terminator” franchise have a big fan base in the world’s second-largest market, T2 never got a theatrical release there. So they are in for a serious treat. And even those of us who were around for the original 1991 debut are in for a special treat — a chance to see ripped Sarah Connor’s impressive transformation in 3D.

“T2” stars Ahhhhhnold, Linda Hamilton, Edward Furlong, Robert Patrick, Joe Morton, and S. Epatha Merkerson. Are you excited to see the movie in 3D for the 25th anniversary, or do you wish they would just leave well enough alone?

Hollywood can’t stop, won’t stop making science fiction movies.

From “Star Trek” to “Star Wars,” studios will boldly go to that galaxy far, far away as long as audiences are willing to pay for it. And while PG-13 genre fare tends to sell more tickets, movie fans also turn out for titles rated “R.” (See the “Alien” and “Terminator” franchises.)

  • 5 Things You Need to Know Before You See ‘Terminator: Genisys’

(SPOILER WARNING: Turn back now if you don’t want to know anything about the plot of Arnold’s new “Terminator” movie. I mean, more than what the trailers have already spoiled.)

One of the most famous lines uttered by Arnold Schwarzenegger‘s murder-powered cyborg is “I’ll be back.” And on July 1, the T-800 will once again be true to his word when “Terminator: Genisys” hits theaters.

The fifth “Terminator” movie aims to robo-punch you right in the nostalgia center, much like “Jurassic World” did, with its twisty, time-travel story that pays homage to the franchise’s first two films (while completely, and wisely, ignoring the existence of meh entries “Rise of the Machines” and “Salvation.”)

To prepare you for another trip to the land of Skynet, here are all the things you need to know about “Genisys,” which picks up where James Cameron‘s original 1984 film left off.

    1. It’s a Reboot…Ish
After “Batman Begins,” the word “reboot” became the hottest phrase in Hollywood. And “Terminator: Genisys” is the latest product of that craze.

Jason Clarke plays John Connor, a character essayed, in various points in the franchise, by Edward Furlong (in “Terminator 2: Judgment Day“), Nick Stahl in “Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines,” Thomas Dekker in the “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” television series and Christian Bale in “Terminator: Salvation.”

Emilia Clarke, from “Game of Thrones,” plays Sarah Connor, a character most famously played by Linda Hamilton on the big screen, and then later by Lena Headey on the small screen in “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.” Jai Courtney plays Kyle Reese, played by Michael Biehn in “Terminator” and in a deleted scene from “T2.” Most puzzling, South Korean dreamboat Lee Byung-hun plays the T-1000, a character originally portrayed by Robert Patrick in “T2.”

But Schwarzenegger remains, as a variation on his original Terminator character. So yes, all your favorite characters from the series have been recast with younger models. But, like all things in the “Terminator” universe, it’s a lot more complicated than that.

    2. It’s Also a Remake
Significant chunks of the film’s first act are comprised of recreated scenes and sequences from the first film, with iconic elements from the second film also added in. It’s basically a 2015 remix of key moments from the 1984 film; in fact, the film largely plays out like a very expensive “mad lib” to all things “T1” and “Terminator 2: Judgment Day.”

This includes Kyle Reese and the Terminator returning from the war-torn future to the comparatively war-free 1984 (full of cold blue lighting and that sequence where Reese, fresh from his naked trip through time, steals a hobo’s pants.) It also includes a variation on the T-1000 mall battle from “T2.” These sequences have some wrinkles and some additions/embellishments, but some of them are virtually shot-for-shot recreations from those earlier movies. What gives these scenes an extra trippy quality is that a photo-real, CG version of the 1984 model is used, and it battles an older version of itself (affectionately nicknamed “Pops”). Eagle-eyed “Terminator” fanatics will have a lot of fun looking at what the filmmakers recreated. There is, of course, a reason for all of this Xeroxing, and it has to do with the twisty, “timey wimey” nature of the “Terminator” franchise.

    3. There’s Actually a Reasonable Explanation for Why Arnold Is Old
At one point, Reese brings up the fact that “Pops,” the Terminator model sent back to a time when Sarah Connor was a little girl, is, you know, old. (“But not obsolete,” as Pops reminds us throughout the film.)

The explanation presented for why is, narratively, well-founded: Since the Terminator is a metallic robot endoskeleton wrapped in living human tissue, the outer tissue actually ages. So the fact that the actor is older is actually justifiable. What’s more, Pops shows up in 2017 with silver hair. The “rules” in the “Terminator” universe are always sort of hard to pin down (particularly in this most recent installment) but this is one thing that does make sense. (Super-nerdy “Terminator” fans will remember that the flesh outside of Arnold’s original robot actually decayed, like a corpse. Remember the landlord who banged on his door wondering what had died in there?)

Apparently, this model knows how to heal a lot better.

    4. The Fewer Trailers or TV Spots You Watch, the Better Off You’ll Be
When “T2” came out in 1991, all the advertising did a great job of hiding the fact that Arnold was John and Sarah’s protector this time around. Audiences didn’t realize it until more than 30 minutes into the movie, when they brainsplode’d over seeing the T-800 duking it out with the T-1000 to save young JC.

The marketing for “Genisys” threw all that preservation of plot twists out the window, with the late-in-the-marketing cycle reveal that a certain hero from the post-apocalyptic future becomes the most sophisticated Terminator ever made. This plot detail has been thoroughly ruined (it’s even on the poster!), so you’re enjoyment of the film will be greatly impacted by how little you now about this twist before buying a ticket.

If you have already watched the trailers for the movie, that’s not exactly a deal-breaker; though it still sucks not to have that collective gasp felt more 24 years ago when “T2” was released.

    5. The Terminator Will Be Back (Duh)
“Genisys” pulls a Marvel by adding a mid-credits tag that briefly sets up a potential sequel, just as the film’s climatic scenes pave the way for a future where, for the first time in over three decades, Sarah Connor is free to choose her own fate.

The effectiveness of these scenes aside, it’s up to the almighty Box Office Dollar to determine if Arnuld and Friends will get a sixth-quel. But based on the warmly nostalgic response to “Jurassic World,” turning that once-dormant franchise into a money-minting machine, it’s safe to say that “Genisys” will enjoy a solid opening weekend. Moreover, the narrative manages to set up new timelines for our characters, both old and new, to play in. (And the film’s reliance on multiple time-jumps also serves a tool future storylines will likely use if given the greenlight.)

The mantra of the “Terminator” franchise has always been that there is no fate save for that which we make for ourselves. This despite the fact that, no matter how many times the machines are defeated, Reese, Sarah, John and Pops always find themselves doomed to repeat a different version of similar “save the future” events. With “Genisys,” the timeline gets even more complicated and intensified. And while Sarah may finally be in charge of where her life goes, the future of her franchise is all in the hands of the movie-going public.

“Terminator: Genisys” opens everywhere July 1.

Game of Thrones”), John Connor (Jason Clarke of “Zero Dark Thirty“) and Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney of “A Good Day to Die Hard.”)

But where are the stars who’ve played these roles in previous films? Interestingly enough, there’s a “Terminator” thread that connects them even in other projects (such as Emilia Clarke taking over the role from a “Game of Thrones” costar), almost as if it were … fate. • Jennifer Lawrence Taking ‘The Dive’ with James Cameron, Francis Lawrence

    Premiere Of Lionsgate's
Jennifer Lawrence and her “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” and “Mockingjay” director Francis Lawrence are teaming up with Oscar winner James Cameron for a new ocean-themed biopic.

TheWrap reports that the trio will work together on “The Dive,” the true story of married couple Francisco “Pipin” Ferraras and Audrey Mestre, freedivers who competed with each other to see who could dive the furthest underwater using a single breath of air. Mestre died in 2002 during one of those dives, in an attempt to break her own world record of 557.7 feet.

Jennifer Lawrence will play Mestre in the film, and Francis Lawrence will direct. Cameron, who has filmed Ferraras attempting his late wife’s last dive, will produce the film.

No word yet on when production is expected to start, or who will play Ferraras. Stay tuned.

  • ‘Avatar’ Sequel Pushed Back to 2017

The trip back to Pandora just got a little longer. James Cameron announced that the sequel to “Avatar” won’t be out until 2017 because writing a trilogy that will fit together perfectly is much more complicated that he anticipated. Remember, this is coming from someone who’s been to the bottom of the Mariana Trench, the deepest and creepiest part of the ocean, so we can only imagine what he’s got planned for the peeps of Pandora. Cameron is actually planning three more “Avatar” movies that will be released a year apart, so those have all been bumped back.

Cameron said, “There’s a layer of complexity in getting the story to work as a saga across three films that you don’t get when you’re making a stand-alone film… We’re writing three simultaneously. And we’ve done that so that everything tracks throughout the three films. We’re not just going to do one and then make up another one and another one after that. And parallel with that, we’re doing all the design. So we’ve designed all the creatures and the environments.”

Stay tuned for more news from the land of Na’vi. Disney is currently hard at work building an “Avatar”-inspired attraction at Animal Kingdom – but that probably won’t be done until 2017.
