John Krasinski and Prime Video changed all that with TV series ‘Jack Ryan,’ which aired four seasons between 2018 and 2023. It offered the chance for longer, more nuanced adventures for Ryan (well, as nuanced as a show based on a Tom Clancy character truly gets) and was a big success.

Amazon MGM Studios is looking to keep that going but is switching tracks to send Ryan back to movie form (likely so that Krasinski can keep playing him but doesn’t have to commit to another season).
What’s the story of the ‘Jack Ryan’ movie?

There are zero details on what Ryan might be up to in the movie, though it’s a fair guess that it’ll involve some big, probably terrorist or rogue state-sponsored threat that Ryan has to A) figure out and B) take down.
Given that Amazon also owns the rights to the Ryan-adjacent John Clark character (as portrayed by Michael B. Jordan in ‘Without Remorse’, and aboard to return for ‘Rainbow Six,’ might we get a fan-pleasing crossover, if only for one scene?

With Krasinski starring and producing, we’ll also see the return of Wendell Pierce, who plays James Greer, Ryan’s superior in the series.
And Michael Kelly, who had a sizeable roles as Mike November, is in talks.
Behind the scenes, Andrew Bernstein, who served as an executive producer and director on Season 2 of the series, is directing the film from a script by Aaron Rabin, who served as a co-executive producer and writer on Season 4.

There is no word on when the movie will land on the big screen. And it might also be an “if” situation –– Amazon could still decide to release it via streaming to keep the Prime Video audience watching.
Still, with Krasinski in the lead, the studio may well decide to leverage his film star status to turn this into more of an event.

The fourth and final season of the popular Prime Video series ‘Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan,’ starring Krasinski, is set to premiere on June 30th.
In honor of the final season of the series, which introduces Michael Peña as Domingo “Ding” Chavez, who could receive a spin-off of his own in the future, Moviefone is counting down the best Jack Ryan movies of all time.
When the president of Russia suddenly dies, a man whose politics are virtually unknown succeeds him. The change in political leaders sparks paranoia among American CIA officials, so CIA director Bill Cabot (Morgan Freeman) recruits a young analyst (Ben Affleck) to supply insight and advice on the situation. Then the unthinkable happens: a nuclear bomb explodes in a U.S. city, and America is quick to blame the Russians.
When a squad of Russian soldiers kills his family in retaliation for his role in a top-secret op, Sr. Chief John Kelly (Michael B. Jordan) pursues the assassins at all costs. Joining forces with a fellow SEAL (Jodie Turner-Smith) and a shadowy CIA agent (Jamie Bell), Kelly’s mission unwittingly exposes a covert plot that threatens to engulf the U.S. and Russia in an all-out war. Torn between personal honor and loyalty to his country, Kelly must fight his enemies without remorse if he hopes to avert disaster and reveal the powerful figures behind the conspiracy.
A new technologically-superior Soviet nuclear sub, the Red October, is heading for the U.S. coast under the command of Captain Marko Ramius (Sean Connery). The American government thinks Ramius is planning to attack. A lone CIA analyst (Alec Baldwin) has a different idea: he thinks Ramius is planning to defect, but he has only a few hours to find him and prove it – because the entire Russian naval and air commands are trying to find him, too. The hunt is on!
Michael B. Jordan as John Kelly in Prime Video’s ‘Without Remorse.’
Back in 2021, Michael B. Jordan hit screens as the Tom Clancy-created military intelligence character John Clark in ‘Without Remorse’, which had originally been planned as a theatrical release before Paramount, concerned about the pandemic’s impact on box office, shipped the movie off to Prime Video.
But even further back than that, when Jordan was first talked about as playing Clark, there was talk of fellow Clancy/Clark novel ‘Rainbow Six’ in development. And that is now coming to fruition, with Chad Stahelski in the director’s seat.
Clark, AKA John Terrence Kelly, is an ex-Navy Seal-turned-operations officer for the CIA (and colleague of Jack Ryan) who appears in 17 Clancy novels starting with 1988’s ‘The Cardinal of the Kremlin’. Though mainly seen as a secondary character who helps Ryan with more of the physical elements of any mission, Clark finally stepped into the spotlight with ‘Without Remorse’, which showed how he came to work for the agency.
‘Rainbow Six’, for its part, continues Clark’s story as he leads the anti-terrorist squad known as Rainbow (the “six” is his callsign). Rainbow consists of two operational teams of elite soldiers from NATO countries, supplemented by intelligence and technological experts from the FBI, MI6, and Mossad.
In the book, Clark and his team must unravel and stop a huge international conspiracy with the aim of wiping out nearly all of humanity. The title has also spawned a series of video games.

No writer is listed on the movie yet, and we don’t know how the film will adapt the book––‘Without Remorse’ made some changes to Clark’s story and the book’s plot, so we’d expect ‘Rainbow Six’ to similarly make alterations.
‘Without Remorse’, directed by Stefano Sollima, was met with mixed reviews, but audiences appreciated Jordan’s work as Clark. And while the first movie was sent to streaming, the current plan from Paramount is to release ‘Rainbow Six’ theatrically.
Stahelski is certainly a good choice for an action movie like this––the former stuntman has spent the last few years bringing the ‘John Wick’ films to life after co-directing the first one. Since then, his fellow director David Leitch has gone further afield with the likes of ‘Atomic Blonde’ and ‘Bullet Train’.
Yet while he’s been in a ‘Wick’ frame of mind (Chapter 4 arrives on March 24th), Stahelski has also been developing other projects, including a ‘Highlander’ reboot. He’s also active as a producer on movies such as ‘Day Shift’ and Halle Berry MMA drama ‘Bruised’.
Given the busy schedule of the leading man (Jordan has ‘Creed III’, which also marks his directorial debut, due on March 3rd) and the newly recruited director, it’s anyone’s guess when ‘Rainbow Six’ might be ready for release, but this is certainly positive forward movement.

Jack Ryan just can’t cut a break. But then, if his life were an easy round of sitting at home with his slippers on drinking hot cocoa, we’re not sure whether anyone outside of John Krasinski’s most committed fan base would watch that.
For season 3 of Prime Video’s thriller series, Krasinski is back playing the character from the Tom Clancy novels previously brought––to movie theaters––by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck and Chris Pine. Ryan, a former Marine injured in the line of duty, becomes a stockbroker before joining the CIA as an analyst and seeing more action than many of his desk-bound colleagues.
The series also stars Wendell Pierce and Abbie Cornish, who play his boss James Greer and girlfriend Cathy Mueller, respectively. Krasinski signed on for four seasons when he originally took the job, and in the later seasons has been involved in writing and show running.

Season 3 will feature new arrivals Nina Hoss as Czech President Alena Kovac and Betty Gabriel as CIA Rome Station Chief Elizabeth Wright.
For this latest season Ryan is working as a CIA case officer in Rome, when he is tipped off that the Sokol Project, a secret plan to restore the Soviet Empire, is being resurrected more than 50 years after it was thought to have been shut down.
Jack embarks on a mission to confirm the intelligence, but things quickly go awry, and he is wrongly implicated in a larger conspiracy. Accused of treason, with a Red Notice out for his arrest, Jack is forced to run from his own government, if he has any hope of uncovering the rogue faction before it’s too late.

Crisscrossing Europe as he is hunted by former allies and new enemies alike, Jack races against the clock to stop the cascade of destabilizing conflicts from leading to global catastrophe…
And even though the plan is to end the show with a fourth season that is arriving most likely in 2023, there is hope for ‘Ryan’ fans as plans are afoot to keep the stories going via a spin-off.
The new show, following the adventures of Domingo “Ding” Chavez, another major character in the ‘Ryan’ stories, is in very early development, to star Michael Peña.
He likely be headlining that if the show makes it to series – the ‘Ryan’ team will introduce the character in the final episode of Season 3, with Peña then becoming a series regular for the fourth season.
Whether this truly proves to be the final trailer or if the streaming service squeezes in another before the premiere, ‘Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan’ will hit Prime Video on December 21st with its eight-episode third season.

Though we do know that Prime Video has decided to wrap up its ‘Jack Ryan’ series with the fourth season, it’s far from the end for the Tom Clancy adaptation.
Season 3 is on its way in a couple of months and promises to be full of the action that fans have come to expect.
To give it its fill title, ‘Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan’ has John Krasinski playing the character from the Tom Clancy novels previously brought – to movie theaters – by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck, and Chris Pine. So, you know, a pretty normal day at the “office” for poor old Jack. And no, we’re not making that joke because of Krasinski’s previous famous TV job.

But fear not, Ryan fans: if you’re already starting to dread the end, be assured that there is still Season 3 headed our way this year and Season 4 likely to hit in 2023. Plenty more action left to enjoy.
And it appears that Prime Video is not ready to completely close the ‘Ryanverse’ just yet. A spin-off series, following the adventures of Domingo “Ding” Chavez, another major character in the ‘Ryan’ stories, is in very early development.

Michael Peña will likely be headlining that if the show makes it to series – Prime Video plans to introduce the character in the final episode of Season 3, with Peña then becoming a series regular for the fourth season.
Chavez, who joined the CIA straight from the United States Army, has gone on missions in countries like Colombia, Iran as well as the United Kingdom where he acted as the executive officer of Rainbow Six. The character has appeared in 22 novels from the larger Jack Ryan Universe. He was played by Raymond Cruz in ‘Clear and Present Danger’.
An end to ‘Ryan’ doesn’t feel like a huge surprise. Though Krasinski has been able to fit in shooting the show around his big screen schedule, that is set to get even busier soon as he juggles various projects, including ‘IF’, which sees him writing, producing, directing and appearing.
The fantasy comedy has Ryan Reynolds and Krasinski’s old ‘The Office’ boss Steve Carell starring in the story of a man (Reynolds) who can see and communicate with other peoples’ imaginary friends, who, it turns out, are not so imaginary. He befriends those who have been forgotten or discarded, but some become irretrievably evil, and he must find a way to stop them.
There is also Krasinski’s ongoing duties on the ‘A Quiet Place’ franchise – he’s overseeing at least one spin-off (‘A Quiet Place: Day One’ has ‘Pig’ director Michael Sarnoski in charge) and potentially returning for a third outing as writer/director.
And that’s not forgetting his other big screen job, which may or may not still happen (and that’s all we’ll say about that – don’t want to stretch our luck).
John Krasinski as Dr. Jack Ryan in Prime Video’s ‘Jack Ryan.’
John Krasinski is Jack Ryan now — and he’s not here for your Harrison Ford comparisons.
Krasinski was on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” last night, trying to promote his new Amazon series. He worked hard to prove to Colbert that he’s an “action guy” now — and not just a nice guy who does comedy, like Jim from “The Office.”
And yet — even in the end, after defeating his nemesis in true action hero fashion — Krasinski looked in the camera to gloat. As Colbert noted, while falling action villain style from the roof of a building: “That’s soooo Jiiiiiiimmmm!”
“The Office” alum was “forced” to do 10 push-ups to prove his action chops. (The audience appreciated that.) And he had a classic stunt fight bit with Colbert. (Shout-out to the photo on the wall of Krasinski’s wife and “A Quiet Place” co-star Emily Blunt.)
No action film is complete without an elevator fight, and this one had a cameo from Krasinski’s “The Office” co-star Ellie Kemper.
Watch the whole thing; the action bit starts around the 3:05 mark:
Stephen Colbert does have a nice villain beard now. It works.

This Saturday marks the start of a new month, and you know what that means: A heap of new titles will be added to Netflix as of September 1, and many more will be leaving. “Ozark” Season 2 (Netflix Original) Get yourself caught up on this binge-worthy crime drama — starring Jason Bateman, Laura Linney, and Julia Garner — before Season 2’s 10 episodes drop this Friday, August 31. When you’re ready, here’s the trailer for Season 2.
“Greenleaf” (Tuesday and Wednesday on OWN at 10 p.m.)OWN
The Fall 2018-2019 TV season starts up in early-to-mid September, but this is a pretty quiet week on the new TV front. There’s plenty to stream (see above on Netflix, Amazon, CBS All Access) and continuing greatness in “Castle Rock” and “Safe Harbour” on Hulu, “The Sinner” on USA, summer guilty pleasures in “Big Brother 20” and “Bachelor in Paradise,” and the always great HBO Sunday night comedy block.
But in terms of new stuff on basic TV, beyond some reality shows, the best might be the launch of “Greenleaf” Season 3 in a two-episode special airing August 28 and August 29.
The Season 3 premiere, called “Strange Currents,” has this synopsis:
“The Bishop and Lady Mae’s crumbling marriage threatens to destroy the Greenleaf family, then a two-million dollar IRS tax bill arrives at Calvary, putting the church in danger.”
Episode 2, airing the next night, is called “The Space Between”:
“Grace takes Rochelle up on her offer to help start a legal defense fund; Bishop and Lady Mae ask if parishioner Clara Jackson’s Powerball winnings can assist with their IRS bill.”
Late author Tom Clancy’s fictional CIA agent character Jack Ryan is headed to the small screen, and it’ll be an action-packed adventure that raises complicated questios.
The titular character, played by “A Quiet Place” star John Krasinski, was made popular by the book series of the same name that Clancy published between 1984 and 2002. With the Amazon TV adaptation coming out in 2018, Krasinski told the Wall Street Journal that his version of the character “feels like a throwback character from the 1950s who just happens to be living in today’s world.”
Krasinski expanded on that description and hinted that Ryan is going to find himself in positions where his principles are challenged.
“There is a deep sense of right and wrong in him, and he’s thrust into this world where there are going to be moral gray areas,” the actor said.
The internal conflict for Ryan will presumably stem from his work as a CIA agent. Season 1 follows him as he goes from working behind a desk to being thrown into the field. Based on all the high-stress scenarios we saw packed into the two-minute preview, released in June, it’s a big adjustment and we could see how he could end up facing moral quandries.
Watch the trailer below.
Amazon has already renewed “Jack Ryan” for a second season, even though it has yet to premiere. Season 1 starts streaming Aug. 31 on Amazon Prime.
Jim heads back to the office at the start of the new teaser for “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan.”
Then things go boom. Then he gets shirtless. But let’s not be creepy about it. Pam wouldn’t approve.
John Krasinski — hot off “A Quiet Place,” but forever Jim Halpert from “The Office” — is the new Jack Ryan in Amazon’s upcoming spy series.
Season 1 is composed of eight one-hour episodes, costarring Wendell Pierce (“The Wire”) as James Greer, and Abbie Cornish (“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”) as Cathy Mueller.
The series premieres on Amazon Prime Video August 31.
Watch the official trailer, followed by the most recent Presidents Trailer in honor of July 4th:
Here’s the basic synopsis:
“Jack Ryan, an up-and-coming CIA analyst, is thrust into a dangerous field assignment for the first time. He uncovers a pattern in terrorist communication that has him up against a new breed of terrorism that threatens destruction on a global scale.“
John Krasinski follows in the Jack Ryan footsteps of Alec Baldwin in “The Hunt for Red October” (1990), then Harrison Ford in both “Patriot Games” (1992) and “Clear and Present Danger” (1994). Years later, Ben Affleck was Jack Ryan in “The Sum of All Fears” (2002), and then Chris Pine for his own movie, “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit” (2014).
Krasinski’s debut will stream on Amazon Prime Video starting August 31. Meanwhile, Krasinski’s horror hit “A Quiet Place” arrives on DVD/Blu-ray this coming Tuesday, July 10.
