  • Ben Kingsley’s Trevor Slattery Back For ‘Wonder Man’ Series

Ben Kingsley became a somewhat divisive part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2013 when he first appeared as Trevor Slattery in ‘Iron Man 3’. While plenty of fans embraced the drunken, slapstick actor who had been hired by true villain Aldrich Killian (Guy Pearce) to pose as the Mandarin and lead a terrorist group, some were upset at the twist.

Yet Slattery has since been more favorably embraced, especially after he popped up in a Marvel One-Shot called ‘All Hail the King’, written and directed by ‘Iron Man 3’ co-writer Drew Pearce.

And then came last year’s ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ where it was revealed that the true Mandarin, Wenwu (played in that movie by Tony Leung) had sprung Slattery from prison and was keeping him around as a sort of court jester. With the help of Shang-Chi (Simu Liu), Trevor escaped and helped in the fight against Wenwu.

Now, according to Variety’s sources, Kingsley’s Slattery will be back on our screens, albeit this time on TV via developing Disney+ series ‘Wonder Man’.

It’ll see him working again with Destin Daniel Cretton, who is acting as a producer on the show. The bulk of the creative heavy lifting, though, will be carried by Andrew Guest, who has Marvel experience himself thanks to a consulting producer (essentially a writer) on ‘Hawkeye’.

Wonder Man, for those who haven’t heard of him, was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, and first arrived on Marvel’s pages in ‘Avengers #9’, which was published in 1964. The character’s real name is Simon Williams, son of a rich industrialist whose company runs into trouble after competition from Tony Stark.

Angered by how Stark has affected his family, Williams accepts an offer from Baron Zemo that grants him super strength and durability. He battles the Avengers several times, before joining them.

His comics runs have also included stunts as a stunt man and actor, so Slattery’s addition to the show points towards something that could spoof Hollywood.

James Gunn had Nathan Fillion lined up to cameo as the character in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ (in a series of film festival posters featuring Williams’ work) but that scene ultimately didn’t make the final cut of the movie.

Marvel, naturally, is not commenting on the Slattery news, but we’re happy to see Kingsley will have the chance to bring the character back once more. Will ‘Shang-Chi’s Morris have a cameo? Only time will tell.

Kingsley will next crop up in ‘Dalíland’ and Netflix’s ‘The School for Good and Evil’.

As for Cretton, the ‘Wonder Man’ show is just one project he has cooking away under his deal with Marvel. He’s also on to direct a ‘Shang-Chi’ sequel and recently scored an even bigger job, making ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’.

  • Robert Downey Jr. and Shane Black Reunite for ‘Play Dirty’

    Kilmer and Downey with guns

Director Shane Black and star Robert Downey Jr., who have worked together on ‘Kiss Kiss Bang Bang’ and ‘Iron Man 3’ are teaming back up again for an intriguing new prospect: they’re developing films and TV series based on Donald E. Westlake’s criminal character, Parker.

Working with ‘Kiss Kiss’ producer Joel Silver, the pair is first looking to make ‘Play Dirty’, which will see Downey Jr. playing Parker. He’s a professional thief who approaches his job with a straightforward, no-nonsense work ethic. He’s a craftsman. He’s brutal, brilliant. He’s also deadly. He’s whatever it takes to get the money and get away clean.

The Parker character was first introduced in 1962’s ‘The Hunter’ from Pocket Books (with Westlake writing under the pseudonym of Richard Stark) and featured in 23 other titles from the author, become a popular, hardboiled staple.

And this is far from the first time that the character has been brought to screens: he’s either been directly used or has inspired roles for actors including Lee Marvin (in 1967’s ‘Point Blank’), Jim Brown (1968’s ‘The Split’), Robert Duvall (in 1973’s ‘The Outfit’), Peter Coyote (in 1983’s ‘Slayground’), Mel Gibson (in 1999’s ‘Payback’) and Jason Statham in 2013’s ‘Parker’.

    10059067

Yet the prospect of Black and Downey Jr. getting back together to make this new movie is even more exciting. Black wrote the script with Charles Mondry and Anthony Bagarozzi, the latter of whom he previously worked with on ‘The Nice Guys’.

Amazon has naturally been quick to snap up the prospect of more than one film and some TV spin-offs from the duo, though Deadline’s report doesn’t specify how much this deal covers.

Let’s not forget that Black is partly responsible for Downey’s presence as the lynchpin of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Years before they collaborated to winning effect on ‘Iron Man 3’, Black taking a chance on a then-career-troubled Downey for ‘Kiss Kiss Bang Bang’ is one of the reasons that Jon Favreau and the Marvel team thought of him for Tony Stark.

Plus, this puts them squarely back in the crime caper/thriller territory that ‘Kiss Kiss’ explored so well. As for Silver, he’s worked with Downey Jr. on several movies, including ‘Gothika’ the ‘Sherlock Holmes’ outings and, stretching back to the 1980s, cult classic comedy ‘Weird Science’. His collaboration connection with Black is just as deep, if not more so, for movies such as the ‘Lethal Weapon’ series and ‘The Last Boy Scout.’ In addition to ‘Kiss Kiss’, he also produced ‘The Nice Guys’.

Downey Jr. is typically busy right now – he’s got a role (along with, it seems half of Hollywood) in Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’ and is co-starring for director Park Chan-wook in ‘The Sympathizer,’ which will see him playing multiple parts. Plus, assuming it actually happens, there’s a third ‘Sherlock Holmes’ somewhere on the horizon.

After critical and commercial misses such as ‘Doolittle’, it’s reassuring to see Downey Jr. back with two of his best collaborators. No word yet on when ‘Play Dirty’ may steal into theaters.

  • Marvel Wins Lawsuit (6 Years Later) Over ‘Iron Man 3’ Poster

Marvel Wins Lawsuit (6 Years Later) Over ‘Iron Man 3’ Poster

    Marvel

Marvel just won a copyright lawsuit over its design for the 2013 movie power for “Iron Man 3.”

On Monday, a New York federal judge delivered a summary judgment victory for the studio.

Horizon Comics Productions, a company run by Ben and Ray Lai,  claimed that the official “Iron Man 3” poster was too similar to their design for a character named Caliban in their comic book series Radix.

    Marvel/Radix

Although they were hired by Marvel in 2002 and worked on various comic book franchises,  U.S. District Court Judge J. Paul Oetken ruled, “there is virtually no evidence in the record that shows any one of these individuals either would have seen the Caliban Drawing or would have been involved in the ‘Iron Man 3’ Poster design, let alone both. Horizon’s arguments that these individuals could provide an access nexus is founded on nothing more than speculation.”

Horizon argued the two works were “strikingly similar,” and produced an expert report discussing anatomical structures, faces and heads, and camera views.

The judge sided with Marvel, who pointed out differences in pose, differing placement of lights, and “significantly different” overall coloring.

The judge’s final thoughts: “In contrast to Horizon’s virtually non-existent evidence of copying, Marvel has introduced unrebutted evidence showing its independent creation of the Iron Man 3 Poster.”
