    • Pixar is developing a ‘Coco’ sequel.
    • Disney CEO Bob Iger made the announcement to shareholders.
    • Directors Lee Unkrich and Adrian Molina are back.

It seems to be the way of things these days that for every big Disney announcement spree targeted at fans –– at a Comic-Con, say, or especially the company’s D23 events –– there’s at least one with business entirely on the studio’s mind.

So it was with the news that Pixar –– an arm of the Disney empire alongside sibling production companies Lucasfilm and Marvel –– is developing a sequel to tear-jerking 2017 hit ‘Coco,’ as the overall CEO Bob Iger made first mention of it at a shareholders’ meeting.

    vbvnXFhmbTpMe1MnOPWZV3

Here’s what Iger told shareholders about the status of the new movie:

“While the film is just in the initial stages, we know it will be full of humor, heart and adventure. And we can’t wait to share more soon.”

It’s hardly shocking that Pixar might look to score again with the sequel to one of its popular titles –– after all, last year’s ‘Inside Out 2’ was a gigantic success and while the animated team is testing original waters again with this year’s ‘Elio,’ the strategy still seems to be leaning on catalogue titles with built-in audiences.

The voice cast also included the likes of Alanna Ubach, Renee Victor, Jamie Camil, Alfonso Arau, Herbert Siguenza, Gabriel Iglesias and Edward James Olmos.

The movie made $210.4M at the domestic box office, and $814.6M worldwide, with $189.2M of that offshore cash from cinemagoers in China.

On the kudos front, it won two Academy Awards for best animated feature and best original song (‘Remember Me’). The movie also won a Golden Globe for best motion picture, animated, a BAFTA for best animated film, and Critics’ Choice awards for best animated feature and best song (‘Remember Me’).

It’s perhaps not surprising as to why Disney and Pixar decided to start work on a follow-up.

Who is working on the ‘Coco’ sequel?

‘Coco 2’ reunites the team behind the original film, including Oscar-winning director Lee Unkrich and co-director Adrian Molina.

Oscar-winning producer Mark Nielsen (who also worked on the likes of ‘Toy Story 4’ and the aforementioned ‘Inside Out 2’) will produce.

What will the story be for the ‘Coco’ sequel?

A scene from 'Coco'. Photo: Disney/Pixar.
A scene from ‘Coco’. Photo: Disney/Pixar.

We do have to take our cynical glasses off for a moment; after all, it’s entirely possible that Unkrich and Molina had cracked a solid story for a follow-up before ‘Inside Out 2’ tore through the box office and weren’t simply ordered to find something that worked so as to serve up an exciting corporate announcement.

Yet it’s tough to figure out where the narrative might go and how Miguel would feature. Of course, the team can cast a new youngster if the character is still boy, and the majority of the adult cast would be fine to return.

But ‘Coco’ itself wrapped up wonderfully with the revelation about Miguel’s family (and the news that de la Cruz wasn’t quite the heroic idol he always made himself out to be), plus a heartfelt, lovely send-off for Ana Ofelia Murguía’s Mamá Coco that left few eyes dry.

So will Miguel learn more lessons from the Land of the Dead? Might the place where spirits go come under threat? That’s all a big question mark for now.

What else is happening with Disney and Pixar?

    'Zootopia 2' Photo: Disney.
    ‘Zootopia 2’ Photo: Disney.

On the movie front, Disney’s live-action take on ‘Snow White’ is now in theaters, though suffering from some very mixed reviews.

Next up is straight-to-Disney+ title ‘Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Road Trip,’ due out on March 28th.

That’s followed on the big screen by live-action remake ‘Lilo & Stitch,’ due on May 23rd.

After that, we have Pixar’s aforementioned animated ‘Elio’ (also directed by Adrian Molina), which lands on June 20th.

Sequel ‘Zootopia 2’ lands on November 26th in the prime Thanksgiving slot, while ‘Freakier Friday’ is out on August 8th.

And this list doesn’t even encompass the Lucasfilm (just ‘Andor’s second season this year) or Marvel efforts headed our way.

When will ‘Coco 2’ be on screens?

As Iger said, it’s very early days, and nothing else has been announced about this new movie. Given the usual production time of animated movies, we doubt it’ll be out much before 2027, and even that seems ambitious (but you’ve got to think that 10 years after the original is a good shout).

This sequel picks up the story of the Deetz family –– Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz and Catherine O’Hara as step-mom Delia, with Jenna Ortega joining as Lydia’s daughter Astrid –– suffers more trouble from “bio-exorcist” Beetlejuice (Keaton), who still has designs on Lydia.

The movie also features the likes of Justin Theroux, Willem Dafoe and Monica Bellucci.

Though it was more of a small-scale release, the original “Beetlejuice” built across several weeks became one of the highest-grossing movies of 1988 with $74.7 million and later inspired a Tony-nominated Broadway musical, which is still touring the country.

The cult appeal of that first film clearly helped drive interest in the new one, despite it arriving 36 years later.

What else happened at the box office this weekend?

While Burton’s sequel was grabbing plenty of business, only one other movie was a new release, and nothing else in the charts did particularly well.

A24 put horror thriller ‘The Front Room’ into 2,095 theaters, but it launched at 10th place with $1,663,954.

‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ slipped back to second and earned $7.2 million. The superhero buddy comedy doesn’t have to worry too much, though, as that was from its seventh weekend in release, a miracle in itself given how short release windows tend to be these days.

Not forgetting the fact that it has now made $614 million domestically and $1.287 billion globally. It’s the second-biggest movie of the year and 23rd largest of all time.

Dennis Quaid-starring biopic ‘Reagan’ clung to third place, making $5.2 million, ahead of fellow holdovers ‘Alien: Romulus’ ($3.9 million) and ‘It Ends With Us,’ which took in $3.7 million.

    • ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ is the biggest R-rated movie worldwide.
    • It has overtaken ‘Joker’ at the box office.
    • ‘Alien: Romulus’ also had a great start globally.

Disney will keep the champagne corks popping this weekend, as a one-two punch of successful movies has given it more reason to celebrate what is turning into a very good year for the company.

To start, ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ has entered the record books as the most successful R-rated movie ever, dashing past ‘Joker’ on Friday to take the crown with $1.086 billion at the worldwide box office.

And though it was finally dethroned by ‘Alien: Romulus’ from the top spot at the domestic box office this weekend, Disney will still be happy, as the latest xenomorph outing is also one of theirs since it arrives via 20th Century Studios. In some ways, it’s a victory for properties the company gained by buying Fox, since the new ‘Deadpool’ is an homage to –– and features plenty of –– characters from the Fox/Marvel years.

Following this weekend’s earnings, ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ is now at $1.142 billion worldwide.

Among its achievements, ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ had the highest-grossing global opening for an R-rated film ever, surpassing 2016’s ‘Deadpool’. It is the 31st film from The Walt Disney Studios (including three Fox films pre-acquisition) and the 11th title in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (including two for Sony) to have surpassed $1 billion at the global box office.

With ‘Inside Out 2’ and ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ Disney has the top two movies of the year and back-to-back $1 billion earners, becoming the only studio ever to release back-to-back $1 billion films in a given year.

‘Alien: Romulus’, directed by ‘Don’t Breathe’s Fede Álvarez, scored a healthy $41.5 million at the domestic box office this weekend, which saw it nab the top spot.

Globally, the new ‘Alien’ franchise entry has scored $108.2 million and represents the second-best start for the xenomorph-centric horror stories (not accounting for inflation).

It’s all the more encouraging given that ‘Romulus’ was originally destined to go straight to Hulu, much as with ‘Predator’ prequel ‘Prey’ but was shifted to theatrical as filming began. The decision has clearly paid off.

It Ends With Us’ –– adapted from the Coleen Hoover novel –– continued to do well, landing third in its second weekend. It made $24 million, declining just 52% from its huge $50 million debut.

The movie, which stars Blake Lively, has overcome potentially controversial talk of behind-the-scenes drama and remains a strong performer, earning $180 million worldwide on a $25 million budget.

Twisters’ dropped to fourth place, but the disaster movie is also holding well, taking $9.8 million domestically in its fifth weekend.

And even more impressive was ‘Coraline’, with the 15th-anniversary re-release of Laika’s beloved stop-motion animation fantasy film rounding out the top five with $8.9 million domestically. It has grossed roughly $11.3 million in the U.S. since returning to theaters on Thursday.

That result is impressive given that, on its original release, it took in $16.8 million for the first weekend.

    • It dropped just 53% to earn $97 million domestically.
    • New arrivals, such as ‘Harold and the Purple Crayon’ had a tougher time of it.

Deadpool just keeps on taking aim at box office records and achievements.

While box office pundits were eager to see how ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ might fare on its second weekend of release (traditionally Marvel and other big movies can be front-loaded, and attendance drops in further weekends), the successful superhero outing has proved it’s in the charts for the long haul, earning an impressive $97 million this weekend.

That’s a low 53% drop in income and indicates that fans and general audiences are still happily turning out for the movie.

With its domestic total now standing at $395.6 million, the latest outing for the Merc with a Mouth has deposed ‘The Passion of the Christ’ (which made $371 million domestically in its run, not accounting for inflation), which should please “Marvel Jesus” no end.

That $97 million now stands as eighth-biggest second weekend in domestic box office history, sneaking past ‘Barbie’, which had that slot after last year’s success.

Globally, the new Marvel effort is up to $824 million globally, with $1 billion and more clearly in sight and likely to be crossed within a few days (‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ has been doing great business during the week as well as the weekend). That is more than either of the previous two ‘Deadpool’ movies achieved in their theatrical runs.

And the movie is currently the third-biggest R-rated movie of all time, behind just ‘Joker’ ($1.07 billion) and ‘Oppenheimer’, which earned $975 million.

Elsewhere, it was a solid week for ‘Deadpool’s veteran chart-mates as ‘Twisters’ took $22.7 million, staying second place in its third weekend of release for $195.6 million domestically. It has served as good counter-programming for adults in search of non-comic book fare who still want a little excitement in their movies.

Third place went to M. Night Shyamalan’s ‘Trap’, which is seen as a mildly decent start, though we’re sure Warner Bros. (which didn’t screen the movie for critics) was likely hoping for something bigger. The movie earned $15.6 million this first weekend on release.

Fourth was ‘Despicable Me 4’, proof positive once again that Gru and the Minions mean big business for Illumination and Universal, with $11.3 million for fourth place as it crossed $300 million in its fifth week of release and now stands at $313.9 million domestically.

Inside Out 2’ continues to also bring in the family crowd, with $6.7 million in fifth (don’t forget it has been in cinemas for eight weeks now) and $626.9 million in total domestically, which makes it (for now) the highest-grossing movie of 2024 domestically so far.

Struggling in sixth place was Sony’s ‘Harold and the Purple Crayon’ which starred Zachary Levi, which was panned by critics, earned solid scores from moviegoers, but couldn’t even crack the top 5 on release, taking in a dismal $6 million domestically and $9 million globally, which is not great for a $30 million-budgeted movie.

The new ‘Deadpool’ outing was helped –– not that you’d know it from the spoilery promotional materials put out by Disney/Marvel –– by excited fans heading to see it before the movie’s various secrets could be spilled online.

That stratospheric $211 million domestic launch makes it the biggest R-rated opening weekend in history ––pushing past the original ‘Deadpool’, in fact, which launched to $132 million back in 2016. And in more general terms, it’s the eighth-best debut of all time on the domestic side.

Globally, the movie also performed beyond expectations. Scoring a coveted China release, ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ opened almost simultaneously worldwide and ended the weekend with $444 million as its global tally.

Marvel boss Kevin Feige applauded the success of the film Saturday night at the San Diego Comic-Con, where a choir belted out “Like a Prayer” (as used in the movie) while Deadpool-themed dancers performed in the aisles. Feige announced that the success of the MCU’s latest movie had pushed Marvel Studio’s cinematic tally to $30 billion –– not bad for 16 years’ worth of releases.

Clearly, audiences wanted more from the Merc with a Mouth.

Sensibly, no studio put out a wide release to compete with Marvel’s latest behemoth, which took over many screens domestically (4,210 to be exact) and nabbed the lion’s share of headlines.

Last week’s champion, ‘Twisters’, dropped 57% for a $35.5 million second weekend, which is still a success. It has so far earned $154.9 million domestically.

Despicable Me 4’ also continued to do solid business, making $14.2 million in its fourth weekend for a $290.9 million domestic total.

And let’s not forget that Disney is already having a good year, with Pixar sequel ‘Inside Out 2’ continuing to bring in families, to the tune of $8.3 million for its seventh weekend. The animated movie has so far made $613.4 million domestically and more than $1.46 billion globally.

We’re fairly sure that idea is already bubbling away among executives at Disney, but unless Reynolds and Jackman feel they have a good idea, we doubt it’ll happen soon, if at all. There’s every chance the duo could show up in other Marvel movies.

Disney and Pixar are feeling all sorts of happy feelings when it comes to animated behemoth ‘Inside Out 2’, as it has passed another huge box office milestone.

The sequel to the 2015 original about the emotions in a young woman’s head had a huge start at the box office and renewed hope that the theatrical releases for the year will show an uptick despite a relative lack of big audience-grabbing movies in the marketplace.

‘Inside Out 2’ is now the highest-grossing animated film worldwide in history, no small accomplishment at a time when moviegoers are choosing to stay home rather than confront the prices and inconveniences of cinemas.

The new Pixar sequel smashed expectations (Disney was projecting closer to $90 million), with $155 million in its first weekend, the highest opening since ‘Barbie’ last summer (Greta Gerwig’s movie opened to $162 million).

Without adjusting for inflation, that marks the second-highest domestic opening for an animated movie (behind the company’s ‘Incredibles 2’ in 2018) and put it far beyond the first ‘Inside Out’, which opened to $90 million.

Garnering good scores from critics and audiences, the new movie also did well overseas, taking in $140 million, enough to surpass ‘Frozen 2’ ($135 million and yes, another Disney effort) as the biggest overseas animated opening of all time.

Globally, the movie kicked off its run with $295 million.

Now, it has moved on even further –– once more overtaking ‘Frozen 2’ globally to take the top spot. There’s a caveat that 2019’s computed generated redo of ‘The Lion King’ still technically earned more, but Disney counts that as a live-action film, so ‘Inside Out 2’ has usurped its throne with $1.462 billion to date globally.

What Other Accolades ‘Inside Out 2’ Has Taken?

Reaching a billion dollars in 19 days made it the fastest animated film to hit that point globally, and it is –– for now –– the highest-grossing movie of 2024 to date and the only member of the billion-dollar club so far this year. It’s also the highest-grossing film in industry history in Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Chile and Uruguay.

The movie follows up from the original by revisiting the emotions in Riley’s (Kensington Tallman) head. We’re back with Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Fear (Tony Hale, replacing Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black) and Disgust (Liza Lapira, replacing Mindy Kaling), who have gotten into a good groove guiding and reacting to the life of their tween charge.

But they’re rudely awakened one night by the Puberty alarm, and even more disturbed by a work crew arriving to demolish the control center, preparing to rebuild it to accommodate some new emotions, including Anxiety (Maya Hawke), Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser), Envy (Ayo Edebiri) and Ennui (Adèle Exarchopoulos).

Soon, the new emotions are taking over running Riley’s life as she deals with new challenges and concerns, while the original crew are left bottled up in the back of her mind. Can they make their way back to figure out how to balance things out?

Will There Be An ‘Inside Out 3’?

Unlike the end of ‘Inside Out’, which teased the possibility of a further story –– the idea of the Riley character hitting puberty, which indeed was picked up here –– ‘Inside Out 2’ post-credit sequence is largely dedicated to revisiting a joke from midway in the movie.

There is, of course, plenty of material to tackle with other life stages for Riley, but few of them would seem to be particularly family friendly. Still, with the huge success of this new movie, expect Disney bosses to at least ask Team Pixar to explore options.

Unlike some other recent big films, ‘Inside Out 2’ was given a 100-day exclusive theatrical window, which means it won’t be streaming on Disney’s service until sometime in late September or early October. The company has put a sneak peek at the movie (essentially a scene and a glorified trailer supercut) to drive interest in it, though we’re not sure it needs the boost at this point.

Garnering good scores from critics and audiences, the new movie also did well overseas, taking in $140 million, enough to surpass ‘Frozen II’ ($135 million and yes, another Disney effort) as the biggest overseas animated opening of all time. And talking of the ‘Frozen’ sequel, ‘Inside Out 2’ has also surpassed it as the fastest animated movie to hit the billion mark.

It has also overtaken ‘Dune: Part Two’ as the biggest-grossing release of 2024.

This past weekend also saw prequel ‘A Quiet Place: Day One’ open strong. While it didn’t dethrone the Pixar behemoth, it still took in $53 million domestically and $98 million globally in its box office debut.

Despicable Me 4’ lands on the key Independence Day holiday this year and given the reliable cash-earning power of that animated franchise, all eyes are on that to finally replace ‘Inside Out 2’ atop the domestic box office chart.

There is also ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’, which has been tracking very strong and should open well.

    • ‘Inside Out 2’ has become the second-highest animated launch at the domestic box office.
    • It’s also a hit internationally.
    • The movie continues the story of anthropomorphic emotions in a girl’s head.

After a few months boasting little in the way of happiness at the box office (‘Dune: Part Two’ and ‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’ have been bright spots, but milder ones), and some big disappointments (‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’ led a shockingly low Memorial Day weekend, the summer movie season kicking off with a whimper), we finally have something to properly celebrate.

Inside Out 2’, the latest release from Disney/Pixar, has finally hit with both critics and audiences, launching to impressive figures.

This is obviously a reason to hope that audiences are finally embracing theatrical moviegoing again and with any luck, the likes of ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ and the new ‘Despicable Me 4’ will keep the cash truck rolling.
