  • Jeff Goldblum, Liam Hemsworth Goof Off on ‘Independence Day Resurgence’ Set

independence day resurgence, liam hemsworth, jeff goldblumFighting aliens is hard work, and sometimes you just need to let off a little steam.

That was no doubt part of the inspiration behind a candid moment captured recently on the “Independence Day Resurgence” set, as returning star Jeff Goldblum, posing in front of a spacecraft, was photobombed by co-star Liam Hemsworth. The goofy snap, which Goldblum shared on his new Facebook page, gives fans yet another a glimpse at the playful nature that’s part of the film’s production, and offers hope that the hotly-anticipated sequel to 1996’s “Independence Day” won’t take itself too seriously.

So there I was thinking about how I would save mankind when this guy photobombs me. Oh, why hello Facebook, nice to finally meet you. #IDR

“Independence Day Resurgence” picks up some 20 years after the first flick, and centers around Earth’s prep for yet another alien invasion, as the distress call from the last batch of attackers has only just now reached their home planet. Goldblum is suiting up again as scientist-turned-savior David Levinson, while Hemsworth’s role is undisclosed for now. (Judging by the above photo, perhaps he plays Goldblum or Bill Pullman‘s mischievous son?) And traveling to the moon is apparently part of the plan, too.

Joining Goldblum and Pullman are fellow returnees Vivica A. Fox, Judd Hirsch, and Brent Spiner, among others. On Hemsworth’s newbie team are Sela Ward, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Jessie Usher, Joey King, and Maika Monroe.

  • ‘Independence Day’ Sequel Gets ‘Resurgence’ Title, New Photo

independence day resurgenceJust over a year from the film’s release, Fox has announced a new, improved title for “Independence Day 2,” and offered up the first photo from the long-awaited sequel.

The flick is now known as “Independence Day Resurgence,” and what it’s missing in punctuation (seriously, there should be a colon after “Day,” right?), it more than makes up for in casting. Nearly every big name from the first film — save for the glaring omission of too-expensive Will Smith — is returning for the follow-up, including Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Vivica A. Fox, and Judd Hirsch.

Joining those familiar faces this time around are series newcomers Liam Hemsworth, Sela Ward (who’s replacing Pullman as POTUS), Charlotte Gainsbourg, Jessie Usher, Joey King, and Maika Monroe. “Resurgence” centers around the people of Earth bracing for another alien attack, since the distress call that the first wave of aliens sent out during the invasion and ensuing battle in 1996’s “Independence Day” is only just now reaching their home planet.

Perhaps Earth’s defense in “Resurgence” involves a trip to the moon? That’s certainly implied by this first image from the flick (below), which calls the pictured spacecraft a Moon Tug. We’re not sure exactly what that means, but we can’t wait to find out.

  • Here’s Jeff Goldblum on the Set of ‘Independence Day 2’

independence daySome fans thought the day would never come, but production has finally started on the long-gestating sequel to “Independence Day,” and some familiar faces have already been spotted on set.

In an Instagram post, producer Dean Devlin — who also co-wrote and produced the 1996 original — shared a snap of star Jeff Goldblum, who’s reprising his role as scientist David Levinson for the flick. “Hanging with David Levinson (Jeff Goldblum) 20 years later is a dream come true!” Devlin captioned the photo.

“Dream come true” could also describe “Independence Day 2“‘s very existence, since it’s been in the works on and off for close to two decades now, with numerous stops and starts — remember when it was supposed to be split into two films? — in the last few years alone. And while Goldblum’s costar Will Smith won’t be back this time around, plenty of other actors from the first flick are due to appear in “ID2,” including Bill Pullman, Vivica A. Fox, Judd Hirsch, and Brent Spiner.

Also joining the cast are new additions Liam Hemsworth, Sela Ward (taking over presidential duties from Pullman), Charlotte Gainsbourg, Jessie Usher, Joey King, and Maika Monroe. We’re looking forward to seeing them all kick some alien butt.

  • Sela Ward to Play U.S. President in ‘Independence Day 2’

Opening Night Gala Presentation And World Premiere Of "Gone Girl" -Arrivals - 52nd New York Film FestivalThe upcoming “Independence Day” sequel is getting a dose of girl power in the White House: Actress Sela Ward has been tapped to play the president of the United States in “Independence Day 2.”

Ward — last seen on the big screen in “Gone Girl” — will fill in for Bill Pullman, who played scene-stealing President Thomas Whitmore in the 1996 original flick. Pullman will return as the retired Whitmore for the follow-up, directed once again by Roland Emmerich.

In addition to Ward, fellow fresh faces joining the cast include “Hunger Games” star Liam Hemsworth (playing Whitmore’s son-in-law), Jessie Usher (playing a grown-up version of Will Smith’s stepson from the first flick), Charlotte Gainsbourg (“Nymphomaniac”), and Joey King (“Wish I Was Here”). Returnees from the original include Jeff Goldblum, Judd Hirsch, and Vivica A. Fox.

We can’t wait to see Ward take her place in the Oval Office. Here’s hoping she can deliver an equally-epic speech like Pullman’s from the first flick — and maybe take flight in a fighter jet of her own. We can dream, right?

“Independence Day 2” — renamed from “ID Forever” — is due in theaters in June 24, 2016.

  • Vivica A. Fox Returning for ‘Independence Day 2’

The Beverly Hills Chamber Of Commerce Hosts EXPERIENCE: East Meets West EventMore of the old “Independence Day” gang is getting back together.

Director Roland Emmerich tweeted that Vivica A. Fox is on board to reprise her role in “Independence Day 2,” making her the second original cast member aside from Jeff Goldblum to return for the sequel.

In the 1996 movie, Fox played exotic dancer Jasmine Dubrow, a single mother to young boy Dylan. In the sequel, a grown-up Dylan (Jessie Usher) is part of the next generation fighting off an alien invasion. Liam Hemsworth plays the son-in-law of former President Whitmore (Bill Pullman).

“Independence Day” star Will Smith will not be appearing in the sequel, though Pullman’s involvement is likely.

  • Liam Hemsworth May Save Earth in ‘Independence Day’ Sequel

Premiere Of Lionsgate's Not much is known yet about director Roland Emmerich’s upcoming “Independence Day” sequel, but one bit of casting may have been revealed: TheWrap reports that Liam Hemsworth has been offered the starring role.

According to the site, the “Hunger Games” star has an offer on the table to lead “ID Forever,” the long-awaited sequel to the 1996 blockbuster. It’s unclear who Hemsworth would play; 20th Century Fox declined to comment on TheWrap’s report.

Original star Will Smith will not be returning, TheWrap writes, though “The Fantastic Four” star Michael B. Jordan is still rumored to join the ensemble. Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman are also expected to reprise their “Independence Day” roles.

Last we heard from Emmerich, he had revealed that the follow-up would now be only one film instead of the originally-planned two-part sequel. He also told Entertainment Weekly in 2013 that the flick would center around life following the attack in the first film, and how the earth has rebuilt — and is bracing for another alien invasion.
