Premiering January 28th on Apple TV+ is the new murder mystery comedy ‘The Afterparty,’ from Oscar winning producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’).

The series features an impressive cast of comedic actors that include Tiffany Haddish (‘Girls Trip’), Sam Richardson (‘The Tomorrow War’), Ben Schwartz (‘Sonic the Hedgehog’), Zoe Chao (‘The High Note’), Ike Barinholtz (‘Suicide Squad’), Ilana Glazer (‘Rough Night’), and Dave Franco (‘The Disaster Artist’).

‘The Afterparty’ revolves around a murder that takes place at a high school reunion after party, and each episode is told from a different character’s point of view. Lord and Miller serve as executive producers and both co-wrote several episodes, with Miller also directing the entire series.

Moviefone recently had a chance to speak with Phil Lord and Christopher Miller about their new Apple TV+ series, as well as some of the cast from ‘The Afterparty’ Including Sam Richardson, Ben Schwartz, Zoe Chao, Ike Barinholtz, Dave Franco, and Ilana Glazer.

Below you can read our full interview with Phil Lord and Christopher Miller about ‘The Afterparty,’ or you can watch the complete set of interviews in the video player above.

Moviefone: Chris, can you begin by talking about the genesis of the idea for the series, and also deciding to have each episode focus on a different character’s point of view?

Christopher Miller: It was a little over a decade ago that I had the idea to tell a murder mystery in a Rashomon style where each suspect would tell their version of the evening and it would be wildly different from the other ones. We were going to make it, we wrote it as a movie, and then we got busy making ‘The Lego Movie’ and ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ and whatnot.

But when we got a breath of air, we revisited it and thought this would work better as a series because in a movie, you didn’t have time to really dig to each character. But as a series, you could give each character their own episode and really understand them as more complex characters. You could really learn to empathize and love each of them, and hope that they didn’t do it. So, as that was evolving, we realized that to push their style of storytelling, stylistically and thematically, we can make each episode feel like a different genre of filmmaking and storytelling.

Then it evolved even farther, and we got an amazing writing staff full of really cool people. With the structure and outline already intact, they were able to turn it into something really special. But it was a really mind exploding process because if you’re working on episode four and you want to change something there, it affects everything in all the other episodes. So, you have to keep the whole thing in your head like this giant machinery of a massive clock in your head. It would really explode people’s heads from time to time.

MF: Phil, was making a murder mystery something you always wanted to do?

Phil Lord: I think Chris and I are fans of ‘Clue,’ ‘The Last of Sheila’ and ‘Murder by Death.’ There’s a long proud history of mixing comedy and murder and we’ve always been interested in what’s a unique way to pull that off. Chris had been developing this as a script for a long time for a feature. When he thought of the idea of breaking it into episodes, and then each of those episodes would have its own filmmaking style and you would get to know each of these characters even more deeply, that’s when it really took off for us and felt like it was going to be worth doing.

MF: Phil, because each episode contains events seen from different characters perspectives, can you talk about how production actually worked?

PL: So, the whole show, more or less, we batch shot it. Meaning that we would shoot a scene in a hallway that was like a fun rom-com and then, “Okay everyone, let’s go to lunch, we’ll come back and now it’s a dark thriller.” That’s part of the fun of it, honestly, but the poor actors did need a second to switch modes.

MF: Chris, can you talk about the impressive cast of actors you assembled and the challenges for them with the different tones in each episode?

CM: We got so lucky to get like a real murderer’s row, pun intended, of comedy geniuses. What was especially great about all of them is that so many of them are writers, filmmakers or show creators in their own rights. So, they really were smart about also holding this whole show in their heads, because asking an actor to be able to just do a character is one thing, but to do a character with eight different shadings of that character is a really big ask. It has to be people who are really smart and savvy, and luckily, they all were amazing, and they added so much to it. We all had a great time together and it was a real love fest. You could really feel the chemistry and joy on the screen.

  • ‘Broad City’ Star Ilana Glazer Bringing Stand-Up Special to Amazon

‘Broad City’ Star Ilana Glazer Bringing Stand-Up Special to Amazon

    Comedy Central

Celebrated Comedy Central series “Broad City” may have ended earlier this year, but star Ilana Glazer is staying in the spotlight: The comedian is about to film her first stand-up special, which is slated to air on Amazon Prime.

Glazer announced the triumphant news herself in an Instagram post on Tuesday, telling fans she was “vibrating with excitement” about the opportunity.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/Byk_zuyFAK7/

The comedian is about to wrap her eight-city “The Planet Is Burning” stand-up tour, and the last stop — scheduled for Wednesday night in Houston, Texas at the White Oak Music Hall — will be recorded for the special (which will also be called “The Planet Is Burning”). Glazer’s announcement included a video clip highlighting some of what fans can expect from the one-hour production, and there’s plenty of the star’s signature zany energy on display.

While we’re a little bummed that there doesn’t appear to be any cameo from Glazer’s “Broad City” co-creator and co-star, Abbi Jacobson, we’re plenty excited to see more from Glazer. The comedian is also executive producing the special.

No word yet on when it’s set to premiere. We’ll be eagerly awaiting additional info.

  • Ilana Glazer, Justin Theroux, Pierce Brosnan to Star in Horror Film ‘False Positive’

Ilana Glazer, Justin Theroux, Pierce Brosnan to Star in Horror Film ‘False Positive’

    Comedy Central

Fresh off the end of “Broad City,” Ilana Glazer is getting into horror.

Glazer,  Justin Theroux, and Pierce Brosnan will star in A24’s “False Positive,” which Glazer also co-wrote with director John Lee, according to Collider.

Glazer and Theroux play a couple who visit a fertility doctor (Brosnan) when they struggle to conceive a child. Except the doctor is off his rocker and tricks them by using his own sperm to get her pregnant.

Collider points out the story’s resemblance to the true tale of Donald Cline, a fertility doctor who used his own sperm to inseminate approximately 50 women in the 1970s and 1980s. He never faced criminal charges, though he did lose his medical license.

The cast also includes Josh Hamilton, Gretchen Mol, and Sophia Bush.

A24 has become known for releasing edgy, unusual horror films like “Hereditary” and “The Witch.”

Glazer recently wrapped up five seasons of “Broad City,” the Comedy Central series she co-created and starred in with Abbi Jacobson.

Comedy Central announced that the Season 4 premiere of “Broad City” has been delayed. Originally scheduled for Aug. 23, the premiere is now set for Sept. 13 at 10:30 p.m. The network said the delay was a simple scheduling change.

  • Scarlett Johansson’s Bachelorette Party Gets Out of Control in ‘Rough Night’ Trailer

Rough NightWhat happens in Miami, stays in Miami? Scarlett Johansson certainly hopes so, in the new red-band trailer for “Rough Night.”

The movie has shades of “The Hangover,” as Johansson’s bride-to-be and four besties hit Miami for a bachelorette party. As one friend excitedly screams, “There’s going to be so many hot Miami babes, we’re going to be swimming in d—, girl!”

They hit the clubs, down shots, snort cocaine, and hire a stripper. But things go terribly awry when the stripper ends up dead, and the bachelorette party soon turns into an episode of “How to Get Away With (Accidental) Murder.”The script is from two “Broad City” writers, and the movie features series star Ilana Glazer as one of the BFFs (Kate McKinnon, Jillian Bell, and Zoe Kravitz play the others), which is recommendation enough for us!

“Rough Night” (previously titled “Rock That Body”) opens in theaters June 16.

  • Best TV Shows to Watch for Singles

Broad CitySome days, it can feel like most TV shows are all about couples — or how to become part of one. But a growing number of shows are exploring single life without forcing their characters to find, or even want, love. Check out how these pioneers — and a few classics — are perfect for audiences content with solitude.

    ‘Master of None’ (2015 – )

Master of None,” finds the stand-up comedian confronting the hard truths about single life and a variety of other topics. While each episode focuses on a theme, the episodes are strung together by main character Dev’s blossoming relationship — and the work it takes to keep it going. “Master of None” consistently offers a realistic portrayal of love — something single TV-watchers will definitely appreciate — as his relationship goes from its honeymoon phase, to a plateau, to a state of major doubt. For viewers tired of TV’s constant portrayal of love as either euphoric or dramatic, “Master of None” offers an unflinchingly honest take, and one that ultimately leaves the audience to decide if that’s a good or a bad thing.

    ‘Bojack Horseman’ (2014 – )

“Bojack Horseman” is one of those shows you need to see to fully understand — it’s hard to explain just how insightful the show is, when on the outside it’s about a half-man, half-horse, former sitcom star dealing with his fading relevance and growing depression. While the backdrop of animated anthropomorphic animals is at times off-putting and other times hilarious, the heart of “Bojack Horseman” is in how Bojack (Will Arnett) deals with his own loneliness. With meaningful performances from Arnett and co-stars Alison Brie and Paul F. Tompkins, “Bojack” ultimately finds hope and happiness in solitude, reminding single members of the audience that it’s OK to hit rock bottom — because from there, the only way to go is up.

    Broad City (2014 – )

“Broad City” is the modern-day equivalent of “Laverne & Shirley” — a buddy comedy focused on the friendship of two 20-something women. The show is part of a refreshing trend of female characters that don’t exactly have their lives together — along with “2 Broke Girls,” and “Playing House” — except, in “Broad City,” Ilana (Ilana Glazer) and Abbi (Abbi Jacobson) are two stoners living in New York City, and their misadventures are far sillier than those in the other shows. And while Ilana and Abbi have their share of romantic entanglements, they’re part of a rare breed of TV character that’s comfortable being alone. “Broad City” is worth it for the clever comedy, and it’s also a nice break from the perpetual romances of other sitcoms.

    ‘The O.C.’ (2003 – 2007)

“The O.C.” delighted audiences for four seasons as it followed bad boy Ryan Atwood (Benjamin McKenzie) from the wrong side of the tracks straight into his adoption by an elite Newport Beach family. While the fun of the show was in watching Ryan acclimate to rich-kid life — and get into fist fights almost every week — “The O.C.” was at its best when dragging each character through his or her own relationship heartaches. “The O.C.” was filled with enough flirtation, romance, and character chemistry that a rewatch is bound to restore anyone’s faith in love.

    ‘Men at Work’ (2012 – 2014)

“Men at Work,” from creator Seinfeld” as it tackles the nuances of modern dating. In one episode, as Milo questions how to best use his smartphone in a new relationship, one can hear echoes of Jerry: “What … is the deal … with texting?” With clever writing and unpredictable plots, “Men at Work” brings good news to the single: Being alone is totally fine, and it’s all right to rely on your pals.

  • ‘Broad City’ Season 3 Trailer Is Peak #FriendshipGoals

Broad CityTrue friendship: making sure your pal has packed their anti-depressants, anti-anxieties, and vibrator!

The full trailer for “Broad City” season 3 is here, and it’s a delightful mash of Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer being as wacky, cuckoo, and lovably themselves. There’s not much sense of what this season’s plots will be, but the trailer does show a lot of funny gags, including Ilana in a dog hoodie and the two of them trying to ride a bike together.
They’re still coming up with great business ideas (a gynecologist who’s also a bikini waxer really is genius), and helping each other out of tough situations (like when Ilana gets stuck in a chain belt). We also get glimpses at cameos by Cynthia Nixon, Blake Griffin, and Tony Danza.

“Broad City” season 3 premieres Feb. 17 at 10 p.m. on Comedy Central.
