More unnatural disasters are coming. Ian Ziering and his “Sharknado” director Anthony Ferrante are looking to launch another Syfy TV movie franchise. The actor is set to star in and produce “Zombie Tidal Wave,” which Ferrante will direct, THR reports.

Ferrante co-wrote the script with Darby Parker and Josh LeBlanc based on a story by Ziering and “Sharknado” writer Thunder Levin. As the title suggests, it centers on hordes of the undead sweeping in. Ziering will play Hunter Shaw, a veteran soldier who helps his island community after the unusual tsunami crashes down on them.

The outlandish premise certainly lives up to that of “Sharknado.” Still, “Zombie Tidal Wave” has big shoes to fill. After premiering in 2013, “Sharknado” grew into a six-film franchise with a cult following.

The upcoming film is produced by I.Man Productions and Stronghold Entertainment. Producers include Wonderfilm Media Corp.’s Kirk Shaw and Imprint Entertainment’s Michael Becker.

“Zombie Tidal Wave” will premiere Aug. 17 during Syfy’s “Off the Deep End Weekend.” The programming will also include all six Sharknado films.

  • ‘Beverly Hills, 90210’ Revival With 6 Original Stars Coming to Fox This Summer

‘Beverly Hills, 90210’ Revival With 6 Original Stars Coming to Fox This Summer

    Fox

Fox is moving back to “Beverly Hills, 90210.”

The network has ordered a six-episode limited series that brings back original stars Jason Priestley, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris, Brian Austin Green and Tori Spelling.

They’ll play heightened versions of themselves shopping a reboot of their seminal teen drama. The actors announced the news on social media and shared an announcement video (below).

It’s unclear if any other cast members, such as Shannen Doherty or Luke Perry, will make appearances.

The project first began percolating over a year ago, led by Spelling and Garth. The actresses then teamed up with Chris Alberghini and Mike Chessler, writers from The CW’s “90210” reboot.

“Beverly Hills, 90210” was created by Darren Star and executive produced by Aaron Spelling. The drama premiered in 1990 and aired for 10 seasons, following group of friends through high school, college, and adulthood.

It became a pop culture phenomenon and launched the spinoff “Melrose Place” (and later, that aforementioned “90210” reboot). Since the show left the air in 2000, the original actors have gone on to varying levels of success in their careers.

Here’s the official logline of the revival:

“Having gone their separate ways since the original series ended 19 years ago, Jason, Jennie, Ian, Gabrielle, Brian and Tori reunite when one of them suggests it’s time to get a Beverly Hills, 90210 reboot up and running. But getting it going may make for an even more delicious soap than the reboot itself. What will happen when first loves, old romances, friends and frenemies come back together, as this iconic cast — whom the whole world watched grow up together — attempts to continue from where they left off?”

  • Ian Ziering Joins DC’s ‘Swamp Thing’ as Daniel Cassidy

“Swamp Thing” has added another actor.

“Sharknado” star Ian Ziering has joined the cast, Deadline reports. He’ll play Daniel Cassidy, a former stuntman and actor whose career has died down after playing the demonic Blue Devil. It’s a recurring role in the DC Universe series.

“Swamp Thing” is based on the comics series created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightston. The cast already includes Crystal Reed as Abby Arcane, a woman investigating a Louisiana swamp; Andy Bean as biologist Alec Holland; and Derek Mears, who plays Holland after he transforms into the Swamp Monster. Other actors involved include Maria Sten, Jennifer Beals, Jeryl Prescott, Virginia Madsen, and Will Patton.

The series is written by Mark Verheiden and Gary Dauberman, both of whom are executive producing alongside director Len Wiseman, James Wan, and Michael Clear. It comes from Atomic Monster and Warner Bros. Television, and it is set to stream on the DC Universe digital subscription service in 2019.

Ziering comes to the project having most recently starred in Syfy’s Sharknado movie series. He is also well-known for his role on the hit ’90s drama “Beverly Hills 90210.”

  • ‘Sharknado 6’ Will Be the Final Film, With a Time Travel Theme

Shark to the future! Or at least the past.

According to TVLine, Syfy will give fans the sixth and final “Sharknado” movie this summer. The title and release date haven’t been announced yet. But we do know there will be a time travel plot to “Sharknado 6” — which makes sense considering “Sharknado 5: Global Swarming.”

In No. 5, Fin (Ian Ziering) saw the world around him destroyed. How do you make a movie after that? You go for the time travel trick, of course! So that’s what’s up in No. 6 — he has to go back in time to try and stop the Sharknado that started it all. Fans can probably expect a lot of callbacks to the early films, which should make for a fun drinking game. (Is there any other way to watch?)

TVLinen says “Sharknado 6” will bring back Tara Reid, Cassie Scerbo, and Vivica A. Fox, with franchise director Anthony C. Ferrante also returning. More celeb-ish guest star cameos are also expected.

The first “Sharknado” came out in 2013, followed by “Sharknado 2: The Second One,” “Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No!,” “Sharknado: The 4th Awakens,” and “Sharknado 5: Global Swarming.”

What do you think they should title No. 6 — “The Last One (Until a Reboot)”? “Back to the Water”?

  • Tara Reid Reportedly Paid a Quarter of Ian Ziering’s Salary for ‘Sharknado 5’

It’s kind of amazing that anyone is paid for “Sharknado” at all. But since the actors are probably doing this just for the paychecks, wouldn’t you expect the two original franchise stars to be making around the same amount? Instead, for the fifth installment of the viral madness, “Sharknado 5: Global Swarming,” The Hollywood Reporter claims Ian Ziering (Fin) made $500,000 and Tara Reid (April) made about a quarter of that. (As Vox noted, Gal Gadot made a base salary of $300,000 for “Wonder Woman,” which isn’t a direct comparison of first film to fifth-in-franchise, it’s just funny.)

Here’s more on that from THR‘s extensive breakdown of the franchise:

“For Sharknado 5, everything is bigger, starting with the budget ($3 million, double the cost of the original) and star salaries — Ziering now makes $500,000 per picture. Asylum manages to limit costs when it comes to Reid’s paycheck — she makes about a quarter of what her male co-star earns on each installment. She protested the disparity during the filming of Sharknado 3. Syfy later asked fans whether or not to kill off her character — but the network flatly denies that the two incidents are related. (Fans voted to let her live.) ‘I think Sharknado cares more about their ‘extra of the day’ than they do about their own cast,’ Reid says, clearly weary of the franchise. ‘You work at something for five years and you don’t get treated as well as someone who shows up for a single day?’”

Considering Reid got top billing with on-screen husband Ziering in the first film and every one since, it is surprising that the pay disparity is that big. You could argue that Ziering is the lead with the most action, but Reid is definitely at the very least an original co-lead, and earning a quarter of his paycheck is pretty insulting — especially when fans even voted to keep her around. How much more proof did they need of her worth to this silly franchise? Good for her for standing up to ask for more, and bad for the producers/Syfy for responding as they did. But also kind of bad for Reid that she’s still showing up anyway. The bills must be paid!

“Sharknado 5: Global Swarming” premieres August 6 at 8 p.m. on Syfy.

  • How ‘Sharknado’ Went From Syfy’s Silly Lark to a Franchise With Bite

sharknado the 4th awakens“It’s a completely new genre of filmmaking,” offers star Ian Ziering of the seemingly unlikely pop cultural phenomenon known as the TV-movie franchise “Sharknado,” “It’s a fun movie where everyone’s in on the joke — except the characters in the movie.”

And, indeed, the joke now comes with an annual callback punchline: since the first “Sharknado” movie, a shamelessly tongue-in-cheek sendup of cinematic disaster/horror blockbusters and their B-movie brethren centered around a cyclonic storm of ravenous sharks, debuted on Syfy in 2013 to staggering ratings, increasingly over-the-top sequels have become a hotly anticipated annual tradition: this year’s installment, “Sharknado: The 4th Awakens,” the pun-titled fourth film in the series, arrives July 31st with all the fanfare of a movie property.

“There’s been such a tremendous support — and now a demand — for these movies,” marvels Ziering, who plays the chainsaw-swinging hero Fin Shepherd, trying to keep his wife, April (Tara Reid), their family, and the entire world safe from soaring, spiraling jaws. “By now, it’s like, ‘Oh, it’s a TV-movie summer series … It’s appointment television. People get together and have a midsummer night party around. It’s on July 31st this year, Sunday night. How perfect for a barbecue, a midsummer night event where people are actually getting together and watching the movie and having a fun time?”

“We never even thought on the first one that anybody would see it,” chuckles franchise leading lady Reid. “Somehow, people just love ‘Sharknado.’ It’s a movie that doesn’t take itself seriously, obviously, and it’s so ridiculous that people enjoy it.”

Ziering readily admits he initially only took the original film to maintain his Screen Actors Guild insurance levels when he and his wife had a baby on the way, though the off-kilter acting opportunities quickly grew on him. “I figured it would just be on TV once just get buried somewhere. Boy, was I wrong! This movie exploded.”

“What took a few years to accomplish in terms of popularity with ‘Beverly Hills 90210,’ ‘Sharknado’ did in one week,” the actor reveals. “It was an immediate sensation. The sci-fi fans that are out there were chattering about it on all the different social media platforms so loudly that it spilled over into mainstream entertainment, where celebrities were even talking about this crazy movie.”

The first film proved so popular, Syfy aired it twice more, with ratings rising higher each time, which prompted a one-night theatrical release followed by a wide international release. “Which is completely backwards from the way every other movie asset, whether it be TV or film, has played out!” he exclaims. “I realized that I am really lucky, because this kind of lightning in a bottle doesn’t happen frequently in Hollywood. To be a part of a project that reaches so many people in a positive, fun way is really a dream come true for me.”

“Each of these movies are kind of different,” says director Anthony C. Ferrante, the auteur behind all four so-good-at-seeming-so-bad-they’re-good films. “At the end of the day, they’re still a similar story — there’s families trying to save each other, and there’s a tornado of sharks that has to be stopped — but I think one of the things that we try to do with each film is go, ‘What kind of genres do we want to play with?’”

“Obviously, with the title ‘The 4th Awakens,’ you can’t get away with not trying to do some ‘Star Wars‘ references,” he chuckles. “The questions is: how do you do them without making it too obvious? So there’s definitely some homages, and there’s stuff in these movies that maybe two people will get. We’ll put in Easter eggs — there’re so many cameos, and people are always throwing in character names and stuff that just tickle us.”

There’s also some good-natured ribbing at today’s dominant event-movie genre: the superhero film. “There’s a little bit of a sort of a superhero origin story, in a way, in this movie that we haven’t done before,” promises Ferrante. “It’s very subtle, but we kind of embraced it. There’s a lot of little references and homages to superhero movies throughout, which I think is kind of neat.”

And there are even more nods to geek-culture classics, as Ziering giddily reveals. “I get a mechanical suit, like ‘Aliens‘! Fin gets to play shark-slayer within the safety of a mech suit — with chainsaw-blade arms! I had so much fun jumping around in this thing like I’m a ninja. I couldn’t stop laughing at first because it was so preposterous, but with the magic of Hollywood and our amazing visual effects artists, it’s going to look completely badass.”ian ziering in sharknado the 4th awakensIn the new movie, the Shepherds have enjoyed a years-long respite from the marauding meteorological events until they again start forming, this time in even less likely environments — specifically, the glittering — and decidedly arid — gambling mecca of Las Vegas, offering plenty of visual gags crafted on the location, including a shark loop-de-loop on the rollercoaster atop the Stratosphere Hotel & Casino. “It’s sharks. It’s Vegas,” says Ferrante simply.

Once again, celebrities in supporting and cameos roles come fast and furiously, with a new roster of famous faces including Married … With Children,’ and I on ‘90210.’gary busey in sharknado the 4th awakens“There were three or four instances where, last minute, we had a really great person and we had to squeeze them into the film,” says Ferrante. “That was a challenge, but also part of the fun … A lot of times it’s like Christmas: ‘Oh, Paul Shaffer is on set — that’s, like, awesome!‘”

“I think we put everything but the kitchen sink into every one of the movies that we do, not knowing whether we’re going to be coming back or not,” the filmmaker adds. “I love the fact that I get to kind of do different movies each time. And I look at it now sort of as a TV series in a way too, because each year we come back and we do a new ‘season,’ in a strange way.”

And, indeed, each new “Sharknado” film feels like Christmas in July for its growing cult of fans, “Some people love the movies, some people hate it, but people have embraced the silliness,” says Ferrante. “I think we need a little bit more of this silliness. Everything is taken so seriously now, and there’s so much horrible stuff going on out there that having something where you know what you’re going to get, I think is a sort of comfort food.”

“So many things are negative in the world right now,” agrees Reid. “When you watch “Sharknado,” you’re not thinking of anything like that. It just makes people happy.”

“I always think it’s funny: I still see ‘Sharknado’ to be a weird film,” Ferrante offers. “The weirdest thing I’ve ever done is the thing that got the most acceptance. Being the odd kid in high school wanting to make movies. A lot of the movies I made were strange. To have that be the success story is kind of gratifying in a lot of ways.”

Is there an end in sight? “It’s one big kind of story, and then however long it continues and however long we’re involved, I think it’s up to the movie universe to say,” says Ferrante. “I’ve done some stuff in between the ‘Sharknado’ movies, and usually everything works out timing-wise, and I love coming back. I think it’s fun. Is there an end-all be-all ‘Sharknado’ movie? I’m sure there is. Is there other stuff that we want to do? Every time I think that there’s not something left to say, we suddenly have something that we can do.”

“As long as I can, as long as they’ll have me, I’ll be a part of this ‘Sharknado’ franchise,” promises Ziering. “It is so fun. It’s such a great working environment. I’ve made some great friends, and as long as the fans out there want it to continue, I will raise my chainsaw high.”

“It’s just been an incredible experience,” adds Reid. “Without the fans, there would be no “Sharknado.”

“Sharknado: The 4th Awakens” premieres July 31st at 8 p.m. on Syfy.

  • Cheryl Burke Hated ‘Dancing’ With Ian Ziering But Apologizes for Suicide Reference

Former “Dancing With the Stars” pro dancer Cheryl Burke doesn’t seem to be sorry for saying that “90210” alum Ian Ziering was her least favorite partner. However, she’s sorry that she used the phrase “slit my wrists” to describe just how much she could not stand him.

Burke is going to be on the podcast “Allegedly” with Theo Von and Matt Weiss, and an excerpt was shared with TMZ, then across the web. People covered it with the headline “Cheryl Burke Says Ian Ziering Was Her ‘Least Favorite’ Partner on DWTS: ‘Made Me Want to Slit My Wrists’”

In the podcast, Burke said working with Ziering on DWTS Season 4 in 2007 “made me want to slit my wrists.” She added, “The fact that his name’s not [pronounced] ‘EEE-an’ and it’s ‘EYE-an’ makes me want to throw up.” The hosts noted that Ziering seemed “very intense” during his later stint on “The Celebrity Apprentice.” Burke said, “That’s the true colors that they didn’t show on ‘Dancing with the Stars.’ Think of spending time with that for like 8-10 hours a day, seven days a week, for three months.” She said she even cried to the DWTS executives, begging, “Is there any way to force us, to just like eliminate us?’”

It’s a pretty candid admission, but since she’s not on DWTS anymore maybe she felt she was finally free to go ahead and spill those beans.

After the excerpt started making the rounds, Burke took to Twitter to apologize … although not quite to Ziering:

“I’ve always lived by the rule that if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all. Recently and regrettably, I broke that rule. In the heat of an interview conversation, I used a phrase that seemingly makes light of suicide and I deeply regret it. I have many friends and family members that struggle with depression and thoughts of suicide. To have said something that seemingly makes a mockery of what they’ve gone through and what they live with is something that I apologize for. I never meant to hurt anyone or to trivialize the topic. I was out of line and for that I apologize.”

For THAT she apologizes. But her distaste for Ian Ziering, after 18 seasons on DWTS and two trophies? That stands. Sorry, Steve Sanders. Meanwhile, Ian Ziering has yet to react to the insults. His last tweet, on April 16, was directed to “90210” fans.

DWTS Season 22, Week 5 airs tonight (4/18) at 8 p.m. EDT on ABC.

  • ‘90210’ Stars Share Funny, Angry, Juicy Reactions to ‘Unauthorized’ Story

The best part of Lifetime’s “Unauthorized” TV show takedowns is the reaction of the real cast members. Over the weekend, the network took on “Beverly Hills 90210” and the actors weren’t too impressed. However, they had different ways of “honoring” the big event. Tori Spelling used the attention to promote “Celebrity Lie Detector,” and said she had a fling with Jason Priestley, who responded online. Shannen Doherty, not surprisingly, had a terse reaction to how she was portrayed. Jason dissed the Lifetime show and Tori’s “Lie Detector,” but supported Shannen.

Ian Ziering had the most fun, tweeting about inaccuracies during the special, sharing old photos, and ending with the perfect assessment of the whole thing:

..#unauthorized90210 Your mother and I are very disappointed. No Mondale for a week

A photo posted by Ian Ziering (@ianziering) on

In case you don’t know, that’s Mr. and Mrs. Walsh, and Mondale was Brandon’s beloved first car. Here are more great tweets from Ian, who kept a good sense of humor about the whole thing (which is fitting, since he’s also in the cheese-fest of “Sharknado”):

Shannen, who wasn’t given the kindest of treatments, used some salty words to share her displeasure:

Jason admitted to getting a bit nostalgic and started answering some fan Qs about the show, and other things. He also retweeted and responded to people who bashed the Unauthorized story, so it’s not like he was a fan. And he also weighed in on Tori Spelling’s whole lie detector thing, which was happening around the same time. They slept together? #goodgossip:

These Lifetime stories may be kind of ridiculous, but they prompt the real stars to share real feelings about what actually happened …. so it’s all worth it?

  • Yep, Ian Ziering and Tara Reid Will Be Back for ‘Sharknado 3’

Premiere Of The Asylum & Fathom Events'
It looks like Ian Ziering got that raise after all: Syfy has just confirmed that Ziering and fellow original “Sharknado” star Tara Reid will be back for “Sharknado 3” this summer.

TVLine reports that the actors will reprise their roles of Fin and April, respectively, the estranged married couple trying to work out their relationship issues in the midst of recurring crazy weather phenomena involving airborne sharks. Last year’s “Sharknado 2” saw them split time between a few other characters; it remains to be seen what other D-list celebs will join the pair this time around.

Unlike its predecessors, which ravaged Los Angeles and New York, “Sharknado 3” will take on the entire “Feast Coast,” wreaking havoc from Washington, D.C. to Orlando, Florida. We can’t wait to see how they destroy a theme park that looks strikingly similar to Disney World (but due to copyright restrictions, can’t legally be Disney World. At least the Washington Monument is public domain).

“Sharknado 3” is set to hit Syfy sometime this July.
