Norman Reedus as Daryl Dixon in AMC’s ‘The Walking Dead.’
Unlike the usually frenetic pace of the ‘John Wick’ movies themselves, the pace of information about casting for the in-production movie spin-off film ‘Ballerina’ has been more of a slow, consistent drip feed.
And the latest word on the ensemble is that ‘The Walking Dead’ mainstay Norman Reedus is now aboard.
“We’re huge fans of Norman, and we’re confident that the fans will be just as excited as we are that he’s joining the ‘Wick’ universe,” producer Erica Lee. “He’ll make an incredible addition to ‘Ballerina.’ ”
Nothing is known yet about exactly what role Reedus will be filling, but the movie stars ‘No Time to Die’ and ‘Knives Out’ actor Ana de Armas as the title character.
‘Ballerina’ will follow the Ballerina character glimpsed briefly (and there played by Unity Phelan) in ‘Parabellum’ and tracks a young assassin who seeks revenge against the people who killed her family. Which does feel apt for something set in John Wick’s world.
Ian McShane in ‘John Wick: Chapter 2’
So far, the movie’s cast has started to feel like a reunion for ‘Wick’ performers, as several veterans of the main film series are confirmed to be showing up. Ian McShane, for example, will be back as Winston, the manager of the Continental hotel, part of the chain of luxury facilities which offers accommodation and assistance to assassins such as John Wick.
Lance Reddick is once more playing Charon, the concierge of the main Continental in New York, while Anjelica Huston will show up as the Director, the head of the Ruska Roma crime organization who raised Wick and trains young women like the Ballerina.
And talking of John Wick, the Keanu Reeves character who kicked (and punched and shot) it all off, is reportedly making a cameo in the new film.
Many of the ‘Wick’ regulars will also show up in ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’, which is much further along. ‘Ballerina’ has yet to chalk up a release date, while ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ is headed our way on March 24th next year.
As for Reedus, he recently wrapped up a 12-year run on ‘The Walking Dead’, the zombie-crammed survival series that became a massive pop cultural sensation. He hasn’t left that world completely behind, though, as he’s filming a spin-off series focused on his character, Daryl Dixon.

The news continues to arrive about ‘John Wick’ spin-off movie ‘Ballerina’, which has ‘No Time to Die’s Ana de Armas starring. And from the sounds of it, it’ll be even more closely connected to the ‘Wick’ world than we thought.
This makes sense, since The Director, who is the head of the Ruska Roma crime organization, is seen in that third movie training up young female ballerinas with some very harsh techniques. And she also oversees the training of male orphans as assassins.
It’s to the Director that Keanu Reeves’ embattled hit man comes to for help, though her assistance costs her when the High Table – controllers of crime in the ‘Wick’ world – decide to punish her giving some who is excommunicado by stabbing her in the hands. No one says they’re not literal when it comes to rough justice.
“The idea of ‘Ballerina’ was formed around the scenes with Anjelica in ‘John Wick 3’, says producer Erica Lee. “Anjelica Huston is an icon and is nothing less than Hollywood royalty. The world of Wick is always made richer by her commanding screen presence.”
Len Wiseman, better known for the likes of the ‘Underworld’ franchise and ‘Live Free or Die Hard’, is in the director’s chair for the movie, which has a script from ‘Parabellum’ co-writer Shay Hatten.
Lionsgate also previously announced that Ian McShane, who has played Winston, the complicated manager of the Continental Hotel seen in the movies, will be back to reprise the role.

News leaked earlier this month that the key figure in the entire franchise – that would be Keanu Reeves himself – will also show up in the spin-off.
There is, of course, no information about what Wick might be doing in the movie (besides kicking, punching and shooting people, we can only assume), or how big his involvement will be beyond a potential cameo, since this is really intended to focus on de Armas’ character.
‘Ballerina’ will follow the Ballerina character glimpsed briefly (and there played by Unity Phelan) in ‘Parabellum’ and tracks a young assassin who seeks revenge against the people who killed her family. Which does feel apt for something set in John Wick’s world.
“We’re thrilled to have Ian McShane joining us for a pivotal role in ‘Ballerina’, says producer Basil Iwanyk. “He’s been such an integral part of the franchise since the original John Wick. It’s been fun to have him on this journey as the Wick universe expands.”

The ‘John Wick’ universe just continues to expand, with a fourth main movie headed our way in a few months (and giving out cryptic social media clues about… something – probably a trailer) and ‘The Continental’ TV series making its way through post-production after shooting this year.
Attention is now turning to ‘Ballerina’, the movie spin-off of the ‘Wick’ films, which stars Ana de Armas.
Lionsgate has announced that Ian McShane, who has played Winston, the complicated manager of the Continental Hotel seen in the movies, will be back to reprise the role.
So… yes, very much a ‘John Wick’ story.
“We’re thrilled to have Ian McShane joining us for a pivotal role in ‘Ballerina’, says producer Basil Iwanyk. “He’s been such an integral part of the franchise since the original John Wick. It’s been fun to have him on this journey as the Wick universe expands.”
There is no statement about Reeves – but then, his presence is probably something the producers were trying to keep quiet a little longer. And the studio has yet to reveal who else is in the cast, but with cameras now rolling, expect more details soon.
‘The Continental’, which focuses on a younger iteration of Winston, is also due on screens in 2023 via Peacock. That show features Mel Gibson, Colin Woodell, Nhung Kate and Katie McGrath in its ensemble.
The fourth ‘Wick’ movie, meanwhile, finds Reeves in familiar territory. “John Wick takes on his most lethal adversaries yet in the upcoming fourth installment of the series,” reads the official logline for the next movie. “With the price on his head ever increasing, Wick takes his fight against the High Table global as he seeks out the most powerful players in the underworld, from New York to Paris to Osaka to Berlin.”
‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ lands in theaters on March 24th next year. ‘Ballerina’ has yet to confirm a release date.

If there’s one thing we know about DreamWorks Animation, it’s that the company is not one to let a successful franchise venture off into the sunset.
We’re not surprised, then, to see that the ‘Kung Fu Panda’ movie series will be coming back – but not until 2024.
So far, all we really know about the movie is the fact that it’ll be out on March 8th, 2024 as Universal and DWA stick a pin in that release date, which right now only has ‘A Quiet Place: Day One,’ and the new ‘Panda’ could well serve as family-friendly counterprogramming to the expansion of Paramount’s creature feature franchise.
No director or even a confirmation of the voice cast has been revealed about the latest ‘Kung Fu Panda’, but since the studio was confident enough to announce a release date, we can reasonably assume that production is underway, even if it’s still at an early stage. These movies, after all, usually take between three to five years to make.
We can reasonably predict that Jack Black will be back as Po, and since these job only involve turning up to a recording booth (or, in this pandemic world, setting yourself up in a closet or room of your home) a few times, the rest of the star cast are likely to be back alongside him.
What will Po face this time? That’s still a mystery, but it’ll be something to test his bravery and skill as ever.
The franchise, in terms of movies alone, has earned more than $1.8 billion since its launch in 2008.
Jack Black in 2008’s ‘Kung Fu Panda.’
‘Kung Fu Panda’, which was directed by Mark Osborne and John Stevenson, kicked off the story of Po (Black), a wide-eyed panda who is mostly known for being lazy and having a huge appetite. He’s also a massive fan of martial artists and dreams of fighting alongside the legendary Furious Five.
No-one is more surprised than he, then, when he’s selected as the hero who can defend the Valley of Peace.
He’ll need everything he’s learned and the help of those formidable warriors for help when the scheming snow leopard warrior Tai Lung (Ian McShane) escapes prison and wreaks havoc on the valley.
Since then, Po and the Five have been on various adventures across the three movies and their stories have also spread to TV.
Nickelodeon has ‘Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness’, which features a different voice cast, while Netflix’s ‘Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight’ boasts the talents of Black, James Hong (as Po’s adoptive goose father, Mr. Ping) and Rita Ora.
And they were just the tip of the iceberg, as Po and co. have been plastered over toys, video games, books and theme park attractions.
UPDATE: Watch the first trailer from ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ in the video player above.
Is John Wick asking for thoughts and prayers? It’s not really what you expect from a man who has been known to kill people with whatever is convenient, but in this first image from ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’, he certainly appears to be having a moment of quiet reflection.
Until, that is, he starts stabbing people with candles. We don’t know if that’ll happen for sure, but we won’t rule it out.
What will happen in ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ still largely remains a mystery, and studio Lionsgate is in no hurry to fill us in.
The end of the third movie, ‘Parabellum’, saw the rogue assassin become “incommunicado”; and landed with a huge price on his head. But by the end of the movie, allegiances have been tested… with The Continental and Winston (Ian McShane) assuming their neutral status once more, after the possible betrayal of Wick. Thankfully, Wick finds himself rescued by none other than the Bowery King (Laurence Fishburne).
Chad Stahelski, who has been the franchise’s guiding director since making the first installment with David Leitch back in 2014, admits he worried about following the third installment, ‘Parabellum’.
Keanu Reeves as John Wick in ‘John Wick: Chapter 4.’
“There’s been a couple days where I’ve decided to do number four and I’ve woken up in a cold sweat going, ‘Horses! How do I beat horses?’ I have no f*****g idea, to tell you the truth,” Stahelski tells Collider. “I have a lot of really cool ideas for the next one that I think are different and shocking and fun and unique. How to do them, I have no f*****n’ idea right now. I’m still figuring it out.”
Stahelski also says that it was never the plan to make more than one movie way back when. And he’s been treating each Wick movie – despite an expanding narrative universe – as a standalone film. But there are always new ideas lurking, even on press tours…
“I think we were in Japan, and Keanu goes, ‘I think I got one more left in me,’ and we had one idea we didn’t use which we really loved, and we have to cut it out of ‘Parabellum’, just didn’t have the space for it,” he says in the same Collider interview. “So we’re like, ‘Okay, we’ll do a fourth. That’s gonna be awesome. We’ll make a plan.’ The studios went, ‘We totally get what you’re trying to do.’ We submitted an idea or thematic plan, and it was really big. So, we’re talking about doing a little bit more. We’ll see how that goes.”
So far, the only real clue we’ve had might not be a clue at all – as actors don’t always know these things for sure – but Anderson has teased the full title is ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ – Hagakure (a Japanese guide for warriors in case you didn’t already know).
Whatever it is subtitled, ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ will punch its way into theaters on March 24th, 2023.

It shouldn’t be all that shocking then, to learn that there could be a spin-off movie featuring Berry’s character.
Out on the promotional trail for Roland Emmerich’s new disaster epic ‘Moonfall’, Berry let slip to IGN that there’s a chance. “There could possibly be a Sofia… her own movie,” Berry tells the site. “So, she might not be in ‘John Wick’, but she might be doing her own thingy-thingy.”
There’s certainly plenty more to learn about Sofia Al-Azwar, the manager of the Continental Hotel in Casablanca, who aids Wick when he’s declared excommunicado, cut off from access to assassin’s guild resources and with a price on his head.
Fortunately, not only can Sofia handle herself, but she also has two very well trained Belgian Malinois dogs. Who, let’s just say, have a bite worse than their bark…?
And the ‘John Wick’ team has certainly shown a willingness to expand the concept beyond the initial three movies (with the fourth on the way next year). ‘The Continental’, a limited series due on Starz later this year, which chronicles the younger days of hotel manager Winston Scott (Ian McShane in the movies). Starring Colin Woodell as the more youthful Scott, the series also features Mel Gibson, Peter Greene, and Jeremy Bobb.
Ian McShane in ‘John Wick: Chapter 2’
Then there’s movie spin-off ‘Ballerina’, which has ‘No Time To Die’s Ana de Armas in talks to star as the character glimpsed briefly (and there played by Unity Phelan) in ‘Parabellum’. Len Wiseman is directing and ‘Parabellum’ co-writer Shay Hatten wrote the script for the movie, which tracks a young assassin who seeks revenge against the people who killed her family. Very in keeping with ‘John Wick’, then.
But before you get too excited about the idea, this is no more than Berry dropping a hint, with nothing official on the books yet.
And we’ve been down the Halle Berry spin-off road before. When 2002 Bond movie ‘Die Another Day’ was in production, Berry’s Giacinta ‘Jinx’ Johnson led to talk of a potential follow-up, with a solo adventure planned detailing how she joined the National Security Agency.
Unfortunately, apparent lack of interest from production studio MGM scuppered the idea. Her following it up with ‘Catwoman’ in 2004 didn’t really help, and the Bond franchise effectively rebooted in 2006 with ‘Casino Royale’. Berry describes the idea of the Sofia spin-off as “putting some ointment on a little sore,” referring to her disappointment over the cancellation of a Jinx film.
‘Moonfall’ is in theaters on Friday. ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ is scheduled for release on March 24, 2023.
Today HBO’s acclaimed series “Deadwood” comes at long last to an end with a two-hour film reuniting its colorful characters one last time. At the time of its premiere 14 years ago, many of its leads were hard-working character actors hoping for a breakout role, while others were longtime performers looking for a comeback. Creator and showrunner David Milch gave each of them unforgettable calling cards that exploded and expanded their careers, opening doors on television shows and movies alike. To commemorate the series’ overdue conclusion, Moviefone scoured the filmographies of the show’s incredible cast for some of the incredible work they did before, during and especially after appearing on one of the most groundbreaking, mesmerizing television shows ever.
It’s hard to believe that the would-be star of “Deadwood” went 13 years (from 1987 to 2000) without a film credit given his mesmerizing screen presence, but McShane’s comeback feels especially appropriate: in Jonathan Glazer’s “Sexy Beast,” he plays a stoic mob boss who does and says almost nothing, and still manages to be absolutely terrifying. He’d later provide echoes of both that role and his “Deadwood” turn as Continental manager Winston in the action-packed “John Wick” franchise.
When “Deadwood” was cancelled after its third season, Olyphant moved on to a familiar, equally memorable challenge with the acclaimed television series “Justified,” where he again played a rigid lawman. But immediately before starting on Milch’s show, he stole Luke Greenfield’s “Risky Business” riff “The Girl Next Door” as a calculating, charismatic pimp who throws a wrench into the plans of an overachieving high school senior.
Molly Parker has, for most of her career, been a bit of an indie darling, so it comes as no surprise that years before joining Milch’s show, she already transfixed audiences in Wayne Wang’s idiosyncratic drama about a Vegas stripper who confounds a dot-com millionaire who hires her to spend the weekend with him.
Like many of the show’s stars, Malcolmson went on to appear in a number of high profile television series, including “Ray Donovan,” where she has a starring role opposite Liev Schreiber. But prior to that, she signed on for a choice gig as Katniss Everdeen’s troubled mother in the “Hunger Games” franchise.
Few actors even on this show have the versatility of the great John Hawkes, who went on to play a terrifying meth addict opposite Jennifer Lawrence in Debra Granik’s “Winter’s Bone,” and followed up that performance with another one as a charismatic, mysterious cult leader in Sean Durkin’s “Martha Marcy May Marlene.”
Callie has long been one of Milch’s repertory players, popping up over and over again in his various television projects. But in Darren Lynn Bousman and Chris Monfette’s “Abattoir,” he plays the mysterious caretaker of a house built out of rooms where terrible things happened, and he effortlessly conveys the menace and gravitas of that responsibility.
Dourif’s Doc Cochran was often the heart of Milch’s series, which may come as a surprise to fans of his earlier work, which includes his breakthrough turn as a delicate mental patient opposite Jack Nicholson in Milos Forman’s 1975 Oscar winner, as well as the voice of iconic movie monster Chucky in the “Child’s Play” films.
Weigert’s Calamity Jane stole many scenes — and hearts — over the series’ three seasons, and she has quietly done the same in a number of acclaimed movies, disappearing into roles in Steven Soderbergh’s exercise in period filmmaking “The Good German,” Charlie Kaufman’s melancholy mind-bender “Synecdoche” before breaking out again in the lesbian drama “Concussion.”
As Al Swearengen’s Number Two, Dan, Brown was forced to tackle some tough challenges, but he’d already proven himself more than capable in a variety of movie and TV roles, perhaps most notably playing Warren, the disabled brother of Cameron Diaz’ Mary in the Farrelly brothers’ raunchy but as always surprisingly sweet 1998 comedy.
More than two decades before playing the Grand Hotel’s oily, scheming proprietor E.B. Farnum, Sanderson became known to moviegoers as the tender, troubled inventor J.F. Sebastian in Ridley Scott’s groundbreaking sci-fi classic, and then pulled a 180 in more than 90 episodes of the sitcom “Newhart” playing Larry, the dimwitted brother to two Darryls.
Kim Dickens is one of Hollywood’s most reliable character actors, appearing in films and television roles with equal ease and skill. For David Fincher, she played a doubtful detective searching for clues in the disappearance of Nick Dunne’s wife Amy before winning acclaim in not one but two popular television series, “House of Cards” and “Fear the Walking Dead.”
Ricky Jay’s pedigree as one of David Mamet’s regular played made him ideal for the role of a smart-talking card sharp and hustler in “Deadwood,” but he had already convincingly played a con artist in Mamet’s breakthrough film “House of Games,” and delivered a decidedly more avuncular performance as Jack Horner’s unflappable cinematographer in Paul Thomas Anderson’s ode to the 1970s porn industry “Boogie Nights.”
Paramount Vantage
Garret Dillahunt – “No Country For Old Men” (2007), “The Assassination of Jesse James” (2007), “Raising Hope” (2014), “Widows” (2018)
Few actors got a bigger bounce from “Deadwood” than Dillahunt, who was so good that Milch killed him off and then brought him back in another role. Just a year after the show ended he delivered memorable turns for both the Coen brothers and Andrew Dominik in two more Western-themed projects, then transitioned into a sitcom star with “Raising Hope” before delivering a powerful supporting performance as a dedicated but feckless driver in Steve McQueen’s feminist crime film “Widows.”
Ready to spend more time with the Gods, old and new?
“American Gods,” whose second season finally debuted on Sunday, has been renewed for a third season at Starz.
Charles “Chic” Eglee was announced as the new showrunner, replacing series creators Bryan Fuller and Michael Green and temp showrunner Jesse Alexander.
The major shakeup behind and in front of the camera considerably delayed Season 2 of the show, which is based on Neil Gaiman novel of the same name.
Eglee’s resumé includes “Hemlock Grove,” “The Walking Dead,” “Dexter” and “The Shield.”
Season 2 added “Oz” and “John Wick” star Dean Winters as Mr. Town and Devery Jacobs (of Netflix series “The Order”) as Sam Black Crow.
“I’m thrilled ‘American Gods’ has been renewed for a third season, and even more thrilled that I’m getting to work on it with Chic Eglee,” said Gaiman, who serves as an executive producer, in a statement. “We’ve been working for weeks now on the shape of the season and I’m delighted that he gets to carry the American Gods torch on to glory.”
The show’s most prominent stars, including Ian McShane as Mr. Wednesday, Ricky Whittle as Shadow Moon, Pablo Schreiber as Mad Sweeney, Yetide Badaki as Bilquis, and Peter Stormare as Czernobog, are still with the show.
“American Gods” airs Sundays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on Starz
When the acclaimed HBO western returns with a long-anticipated movie this spring, many things will have changed — and many things remain the same.
As star Ian McShane, who plays brothel owner Al Swearengen, has revealed, the town is entering a new phase of its life, though the players are still familiar faces.
They include Al, sheriff Seth Bullock (Timothy Olyphant); wealthy goldmine owner Alma Garrett (Molly Parker); businessman Sol Star (John Hawkes); former prostitute Trixie (Paula Malcomson); and the notorious, greedy, money-grubbing tycoon George Hearst (Gerald McRaney).
“Deadwood is celebrating South Dakota as a state, and Hearst has come back and Alma has come back in town, so you have all the main characters converging and how they changed in 10 years,” McShane told reporters at the Television Critics Association press tour, while promoting Starz’s second season of “American Gods.”
He continued: “Now Hearst wants to put telegraphs in town, which isn’t going too well. Al has had a little bit too much of that over the years. There’s a surprise for Trixie and Star.”
The original series, which ran from 2006 to 2008, was set in the 1870s, when Deadwood wasn’t much more than a prospecting camp. The follow-up film jumps ahead a decade, to 1889 when South Dakota earned statehood.
But despite the passage of time, it looks like Al and Hearst are still at odds. And with Alma in the mix, no doubt her ex-lover Bullock will also get involved in any disputes that arise.
McShane also teased the possibility of a second sequel movie — even though this one took 12 years to make.
“It ends leaving you wondering,” he said of the ending.
“If it makes $115M, HBO will somehow find a way to do another one.”
A dirty dozen years have passed since the demise of “Deadwood” on HBO. But now, the acclaimed Western drama is well and truly returning to the land of the living.
The first photos from HBO’s (very) long-awaited movie follow-up to the series are here, courtesy of Entertainment Weekly. The film will wrap up the story begun in the three seasons that aired from 2004 to 2006.
Stars Ian McShane and Timothy Olymphant return as saloon owner Al Swearengen and lawman Seth Bullock, respectively. Here’s a look at how each of them have fared since we last saw them.

They’re both a little older and grayer. Al seems to be contemplating something (likely criminal) at the Gem, while Seth appears to be a U.S. marshal.
Series creator David Milch wrote the movie script. Most of the original cast members are returning as well, including Molly Parker (Alma Ellsworth), Paula Malcomson (Trixie), John Hawkes (Sol Star), Anna Gunn (Martha Bullock), Dayton Callie (Charlie Utter), Brad Dourif (Doc Cochran), Robin Weigert (“Calamity” Jane Canary), William Sanderson (E.B. Farnum), Kim Dickens (Joanie Stubbs) and Gerald McRaney (George Hearst).
The “Deadwood” movie does not yet have a premiere date.
