Things are moving –– or perhaps, given the main character, flying –– ahead for the ‘Supergirl’ movie. At least, if Deadline’s report ends up panning out.

Craig Gillespie, the director behind such movies as ‘I, Tonya’, ‘Cruella’ and, most recently, ‘Dumb Money’, is now in talks to direct the new take on Kara Zor-El for DC Studios.

What is the plan for the Supergirl movie?

While nothing has been formally confirmed, it appears that the Supergirl character (with Milly Alcock of ‘House of the Dragon’ in the part, will first crop up in a cameo in James Gunn’s ‘Superman’.

She’ll then appear in her own movie, which was announced alongside the rest of Gunn and Safran’s plan for the first wave of their new movie/TV universe.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ will be a big-scale sci-fi film based on Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s comic run. It features a “darker, harsher” version of Kara Zor-El raised on a surviving chunk of Krypton who sees everyone around her die.

This is what Gunn said at the time of the announcement:

“This is a very different type of Supergirl. In our film, we see the difference between Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from, you know, the time he’s an infant, versus Supergirl, who was raised on a rock chip-off of Krypton and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl and is much more hardcore. She’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”

It would seem that the ‘Woman of Tomorrow’ subtitle has dropped off, but that may return.

Ana Nogueira has been adapting the comic book with some input from King. Aside from her (plus Gunn and Peter Safran producing and DC executive vice president Chantal Nong as executive producer), that’s it for the team so far.

Gillespie brings a lot of experience to the table –– he’s directed several movies with female characters at their heart and is also adept at balancing tone.

When will ‘Supergirl’ be in theaters?

Warner Bros. has yet to lock down a release date for the movie; which is not a bad idea since zero footage exists for it yet. But the plan for production is for ‘Supergirl’ to kick off shooting later this year once Gunn has completed work on ‘Superman’ and the studio’s focus can switch to the other ‘Super’-character.

    • Sebastian Stan will play a younger Donald Trump in a new movie.
    • ‘The Apprentice’ will also feature Jeremy Strong and Maria Bakalova.
    • Iranian director Ali Abasi is behind the movie, which has started shooting.

While he became well known for playing James “Bucky” Barnes AKA The Winter Soldier in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Sebastian Stan has carved out a niche playing real-life people, including Tommy Lee in ‘Pam & Tommy’, Robinhood Markets CEO Vladimir Tenev in ‘Dumb Money’ and Jeff Gilooly, who was married to skater Tonya Harding in ‘I, Tonya’.

But his latest role will raise eyebrows higher than most –– he’s on board to play a younger Donald Trump in a new movie called ‘ The Apprentice’. But though it has the name of the TV series that first brought Trump to national attention, it appears to take place before he gets that gig, and long before his Presidential term.

‘The Apprentice’ is billed as an exploration of power and ambition, set in a world of corruption and deceit, and will examine Trump’s efforts to build his real estate business in New York in the ’70s and ’80s, also digging into his relationship with infamous attorney Roy Cohn.

It’s a mentor-protege story that charts the origins of a major American dynasty. Filled with larger than life characters, it reveals the moral and human cost of a culture defined by winners and losers.

Who else will star in ‘The Apprentice’?

Deadline reports that ‘Succession’ actor Jeremy Strong will be heading back into the world of rich New York types (albeit real ones this one) to play the role of Cohn.

Maria Bakalova, meanwhile, who broke out in ‘Borat Subsequent Moviefilm’ and most recently was heard voicing Cosmo in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’, is on board to play Ivana, Trump’s first wife (who, it’s worth noting, died last year and is buried in, of all places, Trump’s golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey).

    Who is making ‘The Apprentice’?

This new movie comes from Iranian director Ali Abbasi, who has made films including ‘Holy Spider’ and ‘Border’ and who shot two episodes of HBO’s acclaimed video game adaptation ‘The Last of Us’.

Writing the script for this one is Gabriel Sherman, whose bestseller ‘The Loudest Voice in the Room’ inspired Showtime’s miniseries ‘The Loudest Voice’, starring Russell Crowe as Fox News founder Roger Ailes.

When will ‘The Apprentice’ be on screens?

The cameras have only just started rolling on this one and it doesn’t have a distributor yet, so we’ll have to wait and see when it’ll be in theaters.

(Left) Sebastian Stan at D23 2022, (Center) Director Paul Feig at the premiere of ‘The School for Good and Evil,’ (Right) Maria Bakalova in ‘Bodies Bodies Bodies.’

Given that comedy director Paul Feig had a big success with 2015’s Melissa McCarthy comedy ‘Spy’, which earned more than $235 million worldwide, it’s understandable that he might be tempted by a new film looking to combine laughs and espionage.

Which is good news for an untitled spy comedy in development at Paramount, which already has some potential casting in place –– as MCU stalwart Sebastian Stan and ‘Borat’ sequel star Maria Bakalova –– are attached to star.

Jenny Bicks, whose comedy series ‘Welcome to Flatch’ is produced by Feig (and returns for a second season this fall) has been hired to write the script.

Laurie Feig and Paul Feig attend the World Premiere Of Netflix's 'The School For Good And Evil' at Regency Village Theatre on October 18, 2022 in Los Angeles, California.

What’s the story of this new spy movie?

Details are scarce on this one, but according to Deadline, the concept originally appeared in a pitch to the studio about a failed double agent who becomes an unlikely success. Whether the agent would be played by Stan, Bakalova or someone else remains to be seen.

And though you could conceivably see this as a way for Feig to finally realize the long-rumored sequel to ‘Spy’, it’s more likely the new movie is entirely unconnected, especially since that film was produced by the pre-Disney 20th Century Fox. And if Feig and co. were going to revisit it, you’ve got to figure the announcement would not be wrapped in such secrecy.

If the spy comedy does end up in production, Feig will produce the movie as well as direct it, with Stan also producing.

If it all comes together, this new spy movie could be fun: Stan certainly has action chops and has also proved he can do comedy of different flavors in ‘Fresh’, ‘I, Tonya’ and his quippy back-and-forths with Anthony Mackie in his Marvel appearances. Bakalova, meanwhile, broke out in ‘Borat Subsequent Moviefilm’ and has since cropped up in the likes of ‘Bodies Bodies Bodies’, ‘The Bubble’ and the upcoming ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’, in which she voices Cosmo the Space Dog (that will be in theaters on May 5th).

Bicks has also written for shows such as ‘Sex and the City’, ‘Divorce’ and ‘The Big C’, while on the film front, she’s scripted movies including ‘The Greatest Showman’ and ‘Rio 2’.

Feig most recently released ‘The School for Good and Evil’, which debuted on Netflix and debuted top of the streaming service’s charts despite some very mixed reviews. He’s currently shooting ‘Grand Death Lotto’ a dystopian action comedy about a California lottery where the winner can legally be hunted down by other citizens, who can claim the prize should they kill the winner.

Awkwafina is starring as the current winner, who has to go on the run, with John Cena and Simu Liu as private bodyguards vying to keep her safe. It should be in theaters next year.

  • ‘Dancing With the Stars: Athletes’ Reveals First 3 Stars Ahead of Premiere

Do you think Margot Robbie will show up to cheer on Tonya Harding?

“Dancing With the Stars” is switching things up for the spring 2018 season. Instead of giving fans what would be Season 26, ABC is doing a special all-athletes mini season — starting April 30, and finishing before “The Bachelorette” premieres on May 28.

The full cast of “Dancing With the Stars: Athletes” will be revealed on Friday, April 13 (how ominous) on “Good Morning America.”

But Us Weekly already revealed the first three names:

    • Olympic figure skater Tonya Harding, 47, fresh off the many Oscar nominations and wins for “I, Tonya”
    • Olympic figure skater Adam Rippon, 28
    • Olympic snowboarder Jamie Anderson, 27

Tonya Harding is infamous for her connection to the attack on rival Nancy Kerrigan before the 1994 Olympics. Kerrigan already competed on DWTS this time last year.

There will be 10 athletes to the season, so we have seven more to go. It’s possible more names will be leaked before the GMA reveal on April 13.

“Dancing With the Stars: Athletes” — hosted by Tom Bergeron and Erin Andrews, and judged by Len Goodman, Carrie Ann Inaba, and Bruno Tonioli — will premiere Monday, April 30 at 8 p.m. on ABC.

  • Margot Robbie Had a Wardrobe Malfunction During the 2018 Oscars

Margot Robbie is a woman of many talents, including some very quick sewing during the 2018 Oscars.

There’s a lot that happens away from the camera’s eye — behind-the-scenes or during commercial breaks. During one of the first commercial breaks, People reported, “I, Tonya” nominee Margot Robbie struggled with a wardrobe malfunction.

Robbie told her soon-to-be-Oscar-winning costar Allison Janney that one of her Chanel dress straps had snapped off and was swinging around loose.

90th Annual Academy Awards - ShowRobbie’s rep rushed over to the rescue with a mini sewing kit, and Robbie threaded the needle herself. “Oh, ain’t got time for that!” she joked to People.

(Side note: Recently, Robbie told Graham Norton there’s a special term Australians use when they just want to get on with something: “We’re not here to f*ck spiders.” Seriously. It’s around the 4-minute mark of this Lara Croft video.)

Before that moment, on the Oscars red carpet, People said Margot Robbie and Jennifer Garner met up to shower each other in compliments and joke about their underwear/undergarments strategy.

90th Annual Academy Awards - ArrivalsAnd apparently “The Shape of Water” nominee Sally Hawkins (who is DUE an Oscar) ran into Robbie while she was sewing, and said she was dealing with her own wardrobe issue: She was losing shells off her dress.

Stars! They’re just like us — and their clothes don’t always cooperate either.

But really, “Project Runway” should make Margot Robbie a guest judge ASAP. She always looks stunning, and knows how to calmly solve a fashion emergency in seconds.

Pressly and Robbie should at least play sisters in something. Cast them, Hollywood!

Anytime Hollywood doppelgangers are mentioned, others also get shout-outs, including these two:

There are so many more! Chris Pine sang about not being one of the other Hollywood Chrises. There’s a song attempting to differentiate between Bryce Dallas-Howard and Jessica Chastain. • Here’s How You Can Watch All of This Year’s Oscar-Nominated Films

The Academy Award nominations can be overwhelming, especially if you don’t live in one of the cosmopolitan cities where the films open first (and play longer, to garner attention of high profile Oscar voters). But don’t worry — we have your guide to where you can watch all of this year’s contenders.

Let’s start with the biggies, shall we?

Call Me By Your Name,” the absolutely beautiful gay drama, scored nominations for Best Picture, Best Actor (Timothée Chalamet), Best Original Song (Sufjan Stevens’ magnificent “Mystery of Love”) and Adapted Screenplay (by James Ivory), is currently still playing in theaters. This is also true of such heavy hitters as “Phantom Thread,” which secured nominations for Best Picture, Best Actor (Daniel Day-Lewis), Best Director (Paul Thomas Anderson), Best Supporting Actress (Lesley Manville), Costume Design (Mark Bridges) and Score (Jonny Greenwood).

Lady Bird,” which garnered Best Picture, Best Actress (Saoirse Ronan), Best Supporting Actress (Laurie Metcalf), Best Director (Greta Gerwig), and Best Original Screenplay (Greta Gerwig) is still in theaters. Also “The Post,” which is up for Best Picture and Best Actress (Meryl Streep). “The Shape of Water” is currently expanding wider. The film secured the most nominations this year, including nods for Best Picture, Best Director (Guillermo del Toro), Best Actress (Sally Hawkins), Best Supporting Actor (Richard Jenkins), Best Supporting Actress (Octavia Spencer), Cinematography (Dan Laustsen), Costume Design (Luis Sequeira), Film Editing (Sidney Wolinsky), Score (Alexandre Desplat), Production Design (Paul Denham Austerberry), Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, and Original Screenplay (Guillermo del Toro and Vanessa Taylor).
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” is also becoming a small hit at the box office. The very violent, and very emotional, film scored nominations for Best Picture, Best Actress (Frances McDormand), Best Supporting Actor (both Woody Harrelson and Sam Rockwell), Film Editing (Jon Gregory), Score (Carter Burwell), and Original Screenplay (Martin McDonagh). (It should be noted that the home video release date for “Three Billboards …” was just announced — it hits digital platforms beginning on February 13 and on physical formats February 27, so you’ll still have time to see it in theaters before the awards in March.)

Movies that scored major nominations that are still in theaters also include “I, Tonya” (Best Actress Margot Robbie, Best Supporting Actress Allison Janney and Editing), “All the Money in the World” (Best Supporting Actor Christopher Plummer), and “The Greatest Showman” (Best Song).

And some of these movies are in a state of flux.

You’ll still be able to find “Darkest Hour,” which was nominated for Best Picture, Best Actor (Gary Oldman), Cinematography (Bruno Delbonnel), Costume Design (Jacqueline Durran), Make-up and Hairstyling (Kazuhiro Tsuji, David Malinowski and Lucy Sibbick) and Production Design (Sarah Greenwood), in theaters, but it’s home video release is also just around the corner. It arrives on digital platforms on February 6 and physical formats February 27. Ditto Pixar’s “Coco,” nominated for Best Animated Feature and Best Song (“Remember Me”), which hits digital on February 13 and physical formats on February 27.

World War II epic “Dunkirk,” which grabbed nominations for Best Picture, Cinematography (Hoyte van Hoytema), Best Director (Christopher Nolan), Film Editing (Lee Smith), Score (Hans Zimmer), Production Design (Nathan Crowley), Sound Editing and Sound Mixing, is on home video (both digital and physical) and has been re-released into some theaters, alongside fellow nominee “Get Out,” which is nominated for Best Picture, Best Actor (Daniel Kaluuya), Best Director (Jordan Peele), and Best Original Screenplay (Jordan Peele). You can see “Get Out” at home, but also at your local bijou. So boom.

But perhaps the biggest difference between this Oscar race is how heavily Netflix factors into the nominations. “Mudbound,” which scored nominations for Best Supporting Actress (Mary J. Blige), Cinematography (Rachel Morrison), Best Song (Blige again) and Best Adapted Screenplay (Dee Reese and Virgil Williams), is a Netflix original film (and could have easily earned additional nominations). Plus “Strong Island” and “Icarus,” both nominated for Best Documentary Feature, are from the streamer. (“Icarus” you should definitely watch before the Winter Olympics starts.)

So even when she makes more money, a lot of it has to go to a security detail to protect her from the crazies.

Is that really a fair trade-off?

Robbie told The Hollywood Reporter she’d have less resentment for the position she’s currently in if she’d known ahead of time what she was getting into. Obviously she knew about the added attention, but not the thousands she’d have to pay on background checks to see if this particular stalker has a record of violence or not.

She’s not the only one in this boat — Scarlett Johansson and Jennifer Lawrence probably could’ve told her about it from their respective blockbuster franchises — but Robbie told THR she didn’t realize that, after joining the comic world in “Suicide Squad,” she’d have to keep being in major movies to make major money to pay for major security. That wasn’t quite her plan before now.

Here’s that section of her lengthy The Hollywood Reporter profile:

The celebrity status that has come with joining the DC universe, however, is something Robbie is still figuring out. She’s given a lot of thought to the pitfalls of fame in the past few years and wonders aloud whether perhaps someone at the talent agencies or elsewhere in the process should tell an actor before he or she signs on to a project like Suicide Squad, “You’re about to be in a comic book film; now here’s the worst-case scenario of how big and scary it can get.”

Robbie, who has had to contend with stalkers and death threats, is now forced to spend a great deal of time and resources on personal security. “There’s just all this stuff you learn along the way, like, when you get those death threats, it’s [smart] to have a security team do a background check on whoever sent them to see if there is any past history of violence because you’ll need to know whether you need security to go to certain events,” she explains. “And every time you do a background check, it’s going to cost $2,000, so take that into consideration when you’re getting yourself into this.

Robbie grows more impassioned as she continues. “And it’s like, ‘OK, that’s a different kind of career.’ Because then you need to always do a job that can financially support that lifestyle; you can’t just do indie films for the rest of your life because that film back there changed everything and now you have to be able to afford security.” She pauses to gather her thoughts, and then she adds, “I just wish someone had explained a lot of those things to me early on. I wouldn’t have resented the position I found myself in because I would’ve known what I was getting myself into.”

It’s hard to muster a lot of sympathy for celebrities, but it is a big deal to fear for your life the way many stars do once they reach a certain level of fame. Most fans are harmless but all it takes is one crazy person to make your life hell.

And then it’s a vicious cycle — in order to pay for bodyguards or security, you have to keep being in major high profile films that will pay a lot, keeping you in the public eye. If you want to do a smaller film, you need to have a lot of money already in the bank to pay for all of the people who keep you protected and insulated. It doesn’t sound like the greatest life, overall.

Margot Robbie is currently on the awards circuit for “I, Tonya,” and she’ll next be seen in “Mary, Queen of Scots,” but she’ll also return to the role of Harley Quinn in the “Suicide Squad” sequel and DC’s other upcoming films.

  • Sebastian Stan Wants a Bucky Barnes Solo Movie: ‘That Would Be an Amazing Experience’

BRITAIN-ENTERTAINMENT-CINEMA-CAPTAIN AMERICASebastian Stan is ready for The Winter Soldier to break free.

Seb currently stars in “I, Tonya,” which came out December 8, and he promoted the movie in a new Esquire.com feature. He talked about the toxic masculinity required in his role as Tonya Harding’s estranged husband Jeff Gillooly. He also addressed his resemblance to Mark Hamill/Luke Skywalker (again). And, of course, he briefly discussed playing Bucky Barnes, Steve Rogers’ old (very old) best friend in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Esquire said the success of the Marvel movies has given Seb the opportunity to explore more challenging projects, including “I, Tonya,” and also an upcoming film noir with Nicole Kidman. Bucky is still a big priority, though. On that note, here’s an intriguing part of the interview:

“But Marvel is still very much in the picture, and when I ask if he’s ever considered a Bucky stand-alone movie, he nearly jumps out of his chair. ‘I don’t know when—knock on wood—that would be an amazing experience,’ he says. ‘I’d be up for it whenever. There’s definitely a lot there to be explored. It’s fun, and the guy has got some identity issues.’”

Bucky definitely has issues, and he already got title billing in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.” But Marvel Comics fans know James Buchanan Barnes has a very interesting future in the comic books, and it sounds like Sebastian Stan is eager for that journey.

Bucky Barnes will next be seen with the gang in “Avengers: Infinity War,” opening May 4th, 2018.
