    • Tom Cruise has found a potential next movie.
    • He’s making a deal to appear in Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s new, untitled film.
    • It’s all part of his deal with Warner Bros.

Tom Cruise has certainly done well for himself in big franchises such as ‘Mission: Impossible’ and ‘Top Gun’, where he spends his time doing daring deeds.

But at the age of 61 –– and while he’s not planning to slow down exactly, even he’s beginning to think he might want to try something else.

And in this case, “something else” is getting back to working with drama-focused directors whose budgets don’t include the GDP of a small European country. Something, in fact, more like Paul Thomas Anderson’s 1999 film ‘Magnolia’, for which Cruise scored a richly deserved Oscar nomination.

According to Deadline, Cruise is now making a deal to star in the next film from ‘The Revenant’ and ‘Birdman’ director Alejandro G. Iñárritu, a man with no little experience of Oscars.

In case you’re not sure who we’re talking about, the Mexican filmmaker has enjoyed successful career making unique, thoughtful dramas.

His most successful run was between 2010-2015, when he directed ‘Biutiful’, ‘Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)’ and survival drama ‘The Revenant’, the latter two scoring him back-to-back Best Director Oscars (‘The Revenant’ scored a clutch of awards, including one for star Leonardo DiCaprio).

After some time away from filmmaking (though he did shoot some commercials), he returned in 2022 for Netflix movie ‘Bardo: False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths’.

What is Iñárritu’s new movie about?

That’s the big question right now –– the director has not revealed any plot details and all Deadline’s report was able to discover was his co-writers: Sabina Berman, as well as ‘Birdman’ colleagues Alexander Dinelaris and Nicolas Giacobone.

Cruise reportedly took a meeting with the director about potentially working together recently and had essentially agreed to star in and produce the new movie. We’ll see whether he makes it his next film, or if he squeezes in another from his list of potentials, including the movie Doug Liman is planning to film in space.

Warner Bros., which signed a big deal to have Cruise work on some of its movies, is looking to acquire the rights to the new film alongside regular co-production company Legendary.

    What of Quentin Tarantino?

Quentin Tarantino accepts the Oscar® for original screenplay for “Django Unchained” during the live ABC Telecast of The Oscars® from the Dolby® Theatre, in Hollywood, CA, Sunday, February 24, 2013.

Talking of auteurs, recent chatter suggested that Cruise had been looking to work with Quentin Tarantino on his next (and according to the director, final) film, ‘The Movie Critic’.

With word of the new deal, it seems Cruise has made his choice, though we suppose there’s always a chance he could be entering a new stage in his career, and he’ll only work on movies with a cost roughly equal to the catering budget for his blockbusters –– but don’t hold your breath. Unless you’re Tom Cruise, and you can hold your breath for a long time…

    • ‘John Wick’ spin-off ‘Ballerina’ is moving back a year.
    • The Ana de Armas-starring movie is adding some extra actions.
    • Lionsgate is moving ‘The Crow’ re-imagining into the film’s slot this year.

Things are changing on the ‘John Wick’ spin-off front. While ‘Ballerina’, the Ana de Armas-starring new movie, had been scheduled for June 7th, will now move back a year.

But before you start worrying that the High Table has somehow found a way to hobble the main character, fear not: it’s for a good reason.

    T6zQSeyAbhbLqgQYrfPFZ7

What is happening with the ‘Ballerina’ movie?

    Chad Stahelski and Keanu Reeves

According to Deadline, the change is happening so the ‘Ballerina’ team can add in some extra action scenes.

Chad Stahelski, who has directed ever ‘Wick’ movie since the first, has been promoted to oversee the wider franchise for Lionsgate, and is now going to help director Len Wiseman with boosting the action quotient of the new movie. Which makes sense, since the ‘Wick’ films are always full of stunts and set-pieces.

    What’s the story of ‘Ballerina’?

Anjelica Huston as "The Director" in 'John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum.'

‘Ballerina’ will follow the Ballerina character, played by de Armas, glimpsed briefly (and there brought to life Unity Phelan) in ‘John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum’ and tracks a young assassin who seeks revenge against the people who killed her family. Which feels fitting for a ‘Wick’ movie.

Wiseman, who has worked on the likes of ‘Underworld’ and ‘Live Free or Die Hard’, directed the new movie, based on a script by Shay Hatten (who wrote ‘Chapter Three’).

The cast for the new movie also includes Norman Reedus, Anjelica Huston, Catalina Sandino Moreno, and Gabriel Byrne, plus ‘Wick’ stalwarts Keanu Reeves, Ian McShane and the late Lance Reddick (since the majority of the movie was shot back in 2022).

When will ‘Ballerina’ be in theaters?

The action movie is now targeting a June 6th, 2025 release slot. Which might be a smart move, since it plants a flag on a date that is currently empty of competitors.

What is moving into ‘Ballerina’s old release slot?

If you’re wondering what you can watch instead of ‘Ballerina’, Lionsgate has a plan for that. The studio is moving the new version of ‘The Crow’ to the June 7th date this year.

Directed by Rupert Sanders, the new adaptation of the James O’Barr graphic novel stars Bill Skarsgård as Eric Draven, who is brutally murdered alongside his soulmate Shelly Webster (FKA twigs) when the demons of her dark past catch up with them.

    VUhnt7q2qXPBFbAt2H8vg5

Given the chance to save his true love by sacrificing himself, Eric sets out to seek merciless revenge on their killers, traversing the worlds of the living and the dead to put the wrong things right.

The movie also stars Danny Huston, Laura Birn, Sami Bouajila, and Jordan Bolger. But it’ll be under plenty of pressure, since the 1994 original is considered a cult classic. And the new movie will be up against Ishana Night Shyamalan’s (daughter of M. Night) horror pic ‘The Watchers’ on that June date.

    • It’ll be a New York-set rom-com.

It’s fair to say that with ‘Past Lives’, Korean writer/director Celine Song has announced herself as a new cinematic voice.

Her romantic drama feature debut, which stars Greta Lee, Teo Woo and John Magaro, first garnered attention at last year’s Sundance Film Festival, where its quietly powerful story of old friends and potential lovers reconnecting hit a chord.

It has since gone on to win numerous awards and dominate critics’ Best Of lists for the year and is in the running for two Oscars –– Original Screenplay and Best Picture.

You can imagine, then, that big-name talent would be beating down the down to work with her, and for the director’s next film, ‘Materialists’, she’s scored quite the potential cast in Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans, who are all in talks to star.

    What’s the story of ‘Materialists’?

Here’s the official synopsis for the new movie:

“Set against the vibrant backdrop of New York City, a city that never sleeps and is known for its diverse and dynamic relationships, ‘Materialists’ provides a unique glimpse into the lives of the city’s elite. Lucy’s expertise in matchmaking is highly sought after by those willing to pay a premium for her services. However, with a broke actor-waiter in her romantic past and a new attachment to a wealthy man, all signs point to a toxic love triangle that threatens to unravel the lives of all involved.”

According to the director, the new movie is inspired by the sort of spiky romantic comedies such as ‘Broadcast News’ that James L. Brooks specializes in, which makes us even more eager to see what Song could do with a film like this.

Who is backing Song’s new movie?

The new movie reteams the director with distributors A24 and with producers Killer Films, both of which shepherded ‘Past Lives’ to screens.

Here’s what producer Christine Vachon had to say about Song:

“It feels like she makes a different movie every time, that she’s going to be the kind of a filmmaker who doesn’t make the same movie twice.”

The plan is to start shooting the new movie in May, which makes us think Song is looking to have it ready for the 2025 edition of Sundance.

In a new tweet featuring illustrated versions of the cast in character, the studio revealed that ‘The Last of Us’/‘Mandalorian’ star Pedro Pascal, ‘The Crown’s Vanessa Kirby, ‘Stranger ThingsJoseph Quinn and ‘The Bear’s Ebon Moss-Bachrach have nabbed the lead roles. Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman, Johnny Storm/The Human Torch and Ben Grimm/The Thing are key players in the pages of Marvel, known as the “First Family”, and introduced in 1961. They are among most anticipated characters (alongside the X-Men) to be included in the sprawling Marvel Cinematic Universe.

They’re canonically exposed to galactic radiation and end up cursed/blessed (depending on how you view it) with strange abilities. Reed can stretch his body in a variety of ways, Sue can turn invisible and generate forcefields, Johnny’s body becomes engulfed in flame (and he can fly), while Grimm becomes a rock-covered, incredibly strong creature.

And to be clear here, Pascal will be Reed, Kirby’s playing Sue, Quinn is taking the role of Johnny and Moss-Bachrach will be Ben.

They’ve been brought to screens before –– an unauthorized Roger Corman version floats around the internet after being traded on bootleg videos years ago, and then there were the Fox efforts, 2005’s ‘Fantastic Four’ and 2007 sequel ‘Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer’. They were followed by the dark, gritty and unsuccessful reboot in 2015.

‘I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter’, to which she has been attached as director for a couple of years now (more on that below), is set up at Amazon MGM Studios’ Orion Pictures. It’ll follow her small screen experience handling episodes of TV ‘Gentefied’ and ‘Superstore’.

The story for the movie is drawn from Erika Sánchez’s New York Times bestselling novel, which follows Julia Reyes, a teen with a sharp tongue, a fierce wit and big dreams of becoming a famous writer, somewhere far, far away from Chicago and her traditional Mexican immigrant parents who just can’t understand her love for Whitman, Dickinson and the Ramones.

They wish she was more like Olga, Julia’s sister, now eternally perfect since her tragic death. As Julia seeks to break free of her oppressive home, she tries to uncover her sister’s truth, and in the process gains a deep understanding of the wounds her family carries.

Linda Yvette Chávez, who also wrote last year’s ‘Flamin’ Hot’ (and worked with Ferrera on ‘Gentefied’), is on script duty for the movie.

This is not the first time the book has been set up with Ferrera attached to direct. Back in 2021, Netflix took the rights for the film with Ferrera involved, but it ultimately got stuck in development limbo.

Here’s what Ferrera said at the time:

“Years ago, I fell in love with Erika L. Sánchez’ stunning novel, ‘I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter’. The depth, wit and searing intelligence of her writing, and her young Latina heroine, struck me to my core and left me wanting so much more. I am truly honored and humbled to direct Linda Yvette Chávez’s beautifully adapted screenplay. The opportunity to direct the work of these two incredibly talented Latina writers is a dream come true. I can’t wait to share this film with the many fans of the novel, and to introduce this funny, profound, and resonant story to the world.”

Opening in theaters on January 26th, ‘Miller’s Girl’ takes a dynamic that has been portrayed many times on screen –– the complicated, troubling teacher/student relationship that threatens to cross over into something less legally defined through the actions of one or both.

Here, writer/director Jade Halley Bartlett looks to tell her own take on that tale, finding a way through a particularly knotty path that sometimes finds itself in the weeds of expectation and tone.

Does ‘Miller’s Girl’ Have the “Write” Stuff?

Jenna Ortega as Cairo Sweet in the Psychological Thriller film, 'Miller's Girl,' a Lionsgate release.
Jenna Ortega as Cairo Sweet in the Psychological Thriller film, ‘Miller’s Girl,’ a Lionsgate release. Photo courtesy of Lionsgate.

Bartlett’s film, including the surname of one of the main characters, channels writer Henry Miller, whose writing also features as a key plot element. There might be nothing here that can quite compare to Miller’s work, but Bartlett has a fair stab at grafting complicated sexual politics on to a very recognizable dramatic situation. Yet that familiar concept can sometimes breed contempt, as there have been more compelling takes on this subject.

    ‘Miller’s Girl’: Script and Direction

Bartlett’s playwright past means the dialogue is the star here, even more so than either Jenna Ortega or Martin Freeman. The pair’s burgeoning friendship and shared love of literature is a touchstone that Bartlett returns to several times as she draws her characters closer.

Problem is, there are times, particularly in the first two acts, where it smacks of Bartlett showing off her talent for writing. And that pushes the interaction between Ortega and Freeman, or Ortega and Gideon Adlon’s Winnie into unrealistic territory: these aren’t relatable, human characters, they’re constructs designed to spin clever lines together.

The concept also sometimes comes across as problematic, and we don’t mean the situation between the teacher and his student. Ortega’s character being left to rattle around the gothic mansion while her parents work/galivant overseas is not always as convincing as the writer/director believes them to be, no matter how much Bartlett tries to weave more mystery around her.

Once things get more dramatic, however, the tenor of the dialogue settles down to something that feels more like human interaction, no matter how melodramatic it becomes. It’s here, though, that the whole affair then threatens to go off the deep end as the twists start coming.

The direction, meanwhile, is basic and unobtrusive. The lower budget and tight focus mean that you never really get a sense of the school as a place –– other students are seldom glimpse, and outside of the five main characters, there are few other people to be found in the film.

It gives a claustrophobic feel, which works for the movie’s story, but does sometimes make it feel more like a play than a film. One or two visual moments break that spell –– one particular moment during a rainfall works very well –– but otherwise this is, by design, fairly closed in.

    ‘Miller’s Girl’: Performances

Martin Freeman as Jonathan Miller and Jenna Ortega as Cairo Sweet in 'Miller’s Girl.'
(L to R) Martin Freeman as Jonathan Miller and Jenna Ortega as Cairo Sweet in ‘Miller’s Girl.’ Photo Credit: Zac Popik.

Ortega has long since proved she can handle something like this –– though her academic acting of late has mostly been in ‘Wednesday’, which is more a dark comedy with a side of horror. Here, the horror is on a much more human level, and Ortega sinks into the role of the smart Cairo Sweet, who carries a sense of mystery around her along with her school books.

As the different layers of her psyche are revealed –– this is, after all, is a story that seeks to show the darker impulses of both the student and teacher –– Ortega is more than up to the task, though even she can’t quite make some of the later twists function convincingly.

Freeman, for his part, brings his own layers to teacher Jonathan Miller. We’re mostly used to seeing him as a likeable everyman and here, that’s who Miller appears to be at the start. But as the movie digs into his buried resentments and frustration, and his dangerous side is revealed, Freeman is still convincing.

Likewise his interaction with Bashir Salahuddin’s fellow teacher convinces as a friendly male relationship, full of warmly traded jokes and bonhomie. And Salahuddin also works well, though his character does sometimes verge into cliché.

Gideon Adlon, as Cairo’s best friend Winnie has her own arc. Initially portrayed as a sexed-up polysexual, she at first might belong more in a comedy such as ‘Booksmart’ or ‘Superbad’ (Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, by coincidence, are producers here), but is soon wrapped up in the ensuing drama between Ortega and Freeman’s characters. The cast sometimes struggles in the later scenes, but overall they all do good work.

    ‘Miller’s Girl’: Final Thoughts

Jenna Ortega as Cairo Sweet in the Psychological Thriller film, 'Miller's Girl,' a Lionsgate release.

In tackling something that has been brought to screens in a variety of ways (not to mention a real-life issue that can be extremely difficult for all involved), ‘Miller’s Girl’ is a thoughtful, dramatic meditation on the dangers of literary lust spilling out into the real world. The performances are solid, but the movie itself sometimes finds itself lost in its own world.

‘Miller’s Girl’ receives 7 out of 10 stars.

What’s the plot of ‘Miller’s Girl’?

A talented young writer (Jenna Ortega) embarks on a creative odyssey when her teacher (Martin Freeman) assigns a project that entangles them both in an increasingly complex web. As lines blur and their lives intertwine, professor and protégé must confront their darkest selves while straining to preserve their individual sense of purpose and the things they hold most dear.

    • A new ‘Bob the Builder’ animated movie is in development.
    • Jennifer Lopez is on board to produce the movie.
    • Anthony Ramos will voice Bob in a story set in Puerto Rico.

Here’s a story we’re not sure we saw coming: ‘Bob the Builder’, the classic animated kids’ show is getting its shot at a big screen movie. So far, so unexpected.

But then you learn that Jennifer Lopez is producing the film, with Anthony Ramos taking over voice duties for a story that will see the construction-minded character heading to Puerto Rico. And it’s backed by rights holder Mattel, who are still riding high on the success of ‘Barbie’.

For those who don’t have kids or a love of children’s’ TV output, Bob as a series follows the adventures of Bob, a general contractor, specializing, along with his colleague Wendy, various neighbors, and friends, and equipment, and their gang of anthropomorphized work-vehicles, Scoop, Muck, Dizzy, Roley, Lofty and many others.

The show began life in the UK, where it ran between 1999 to 2011 before the format was sold to Mattel and it came back for a new series in 2015.

As for the movie, it’ll see Roberto (aka Bob) travelling to Puerto Rico for a major construction job. According to the logline, audiences will see Bob as he “takes on issues affecting the island and digs deeper into what it means to build. Bob’s journey will celebrate the vibrant and colorful textures of the Caribbean Latin nations and their people.”

Felipe Vargas is writing the script for the movie.

Here’s what Anthony Ramos had to say about the new movie:

“For years, ‘Bob the Builder’s characters have inspired young people around the world. A movie about friends working together, a celebration of a beautiful home they share, and how love can help to conquer any obstacle in your way. Can we fix it? Yes, we can!”

Robbie Brenner, president of Mattel Films, had this to say:

“Pairing Anthony and Felipe’s genius vision for the story will capture this beloved character in a manner that audiences who grew up with Bob will recognize, and all-new audiences will enjoy,” said Robbie Brenner, president of Mattel Films.

And this was the sentiment from Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas of Lopez’ Nuyorican Productions company:

“The show’s ability to promote positive thinking, problem-solving and empowerment with a completely original story set in Puerto Rico puts a new spin on a beloved brand. We can’t wait for new and existing fans to connect with these amazing characters.”

    • Ronstadt retired from singing in 2012 after a Parkinson’s diagnosis.

While the genre is an evergreen one, there have been a number of musical biopics in recent years that saw mixed fortunes. While ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ (about Freddie Mercury and Queen) scored an Oscar and box office success, others have been met with more muted responses (‘Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody’ among them).

But the trend shows no sign of slowing; we have an Amy Winehouse movie (‘Back to Black’) and ‘Bob Marley: One Love’ both on the way.

Add to that number the idea that Selena Gomez will play a young Linda Ronstadt in a new movie.

    Who is Linda Ronstadt?

In case you’re somehow not aware of her, Ronstadt was the pre-eminent female pop star of the 1970s into the 80s. She took control of her career and her life, having dozens of hits while dating the likes of George Lucas and California governor Jerry Brown. She was supported by The Eagles, who played behind her, toured with Jackson Browne, and sung on Neil Young’s “Heart of Gold.”

In the 80s, Ronstadt and appeared to acclaim on Broadway opposite Kevin Kline in ‘The Pirates of Penzance’, formed a trio with Dolly Parton and Emmylou Harris and had a major hit with Aaron Neville. She retired from singing in 2012 following a Parkinson’s diagnosis.

It’s not known what part of Ronstadt’s life and career will be covered, but Gomez’ casting suggests her younger days.

What’s happening with the Linda Ronstadt movie?

Last year, Showbiz 411 reported that singer Gomez, who has found acting acclaim with ‘Only Murders in the Building’ would be playing 1970s and 1980s music icon Ronstadt in a new movie.

James Keach, who produced the award winning documentary, ‘The Sound of My Voice,’ about Ronstadt, has a script together and has officially landed Gomez’ services to star.

David O. Russell boards the Ronstadt film

Things have moved on since then and now, once again reported by Showbiz 411, David O. Russell is aboard to direct the film.

Russell, of course, is the Oscar-winning filmmaker behind the likes of ‘Silver Linings Playbook’, and ‘American Hustle’ who last made flop comedy ‘Amsterdam’ (which featured an acting gig by Gomez’ friend and musical superstar Taylor Swift).

He’s also been wreathed in controversy for outbursts on sets and rumors of bad behavior in his personal life, so he seems like a surprising choice to work with Gomez.

When will the Ronstadt movie hit theaters?

There are no release date details for the movie, which is still in development –– it’s likely Russell might want to work on the script himself or bring in another writer, and it’ll all depend on Gomez’ schedule. She has another season of ‘Only Murders’ to shoot and while she’s looking to focus on acting rather than singing now, she has said she wants to make one more album.

  • Jenna Ortega Won’t Star in ‘Scream VII’

    • Jenna Ortega is no longer appearing in ‘Scream VII’.
    • She reportedly has a schedule clash with filming ‘Wednesday’ Season 2.
    • The news comes just as co-star Melissa Barrera is dropped from the film over controversial social media posts.

The ‘Scream’ franchise has been hit with a one-two punch of its main stars departing.

Today brings word that Jenna Ortega, who has played Tara Carpenter for the most recent two entries (directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett), will not return for the seventh installment.

Why is Jenna Ortega not returning for the seventh ‘Scream’ movie?

Officially, the story, according to Deadline is one of scheduling issues brought about because of the actors’ strike –– Ortega has a few days’ work left to complete ‘Beetlejuice 2’ and will spend a chunk of next year filming the second season of hit Netflix series ‘Wednesday’ in Ireland.

With the ‘Scream’ team (including incoming director Christopher Landon, who was hired to make the new movie back in August) looking to get the movie going ahead now the strikes are over, it appears she simply won’t have time to make both projects.

We’re still not certain why Spyglass (and studio Paramount) couldn’t simply hit pause until Ortega had space in her schedule, but of course the franchise needs to rumble on.

Yet the timing is also intriguing given the other big ‘Scream’ wrinkle…

What happened with Melissa Barrera and ‘Scream’?

Melissa Barrera (Sam Carpenter) and Jenna Ortega (Tara Carpenter) stars in Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media Group's 'Scream VI.'
(L to R) Melissa Barrera (Sam Carpenter) and Jenna Ortega (Tara Carpenter) stars in Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media Group’s ‘Scream VI.’

Why are we a little suspicious of the timing? The Ortega news arrives one day after her co-star Melissa Barrera was dropped from the franchise for controversial social media posts.

‘Scream’ production company Spyglass issued a statement on the situation:

“Spyglass’ stance is unequivocally clear: We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech.”

And Landon put his own statement on Twitter, but then deleted it:

“This is my statement: 💔 Everything sucks. Stop yelling. This was not my decision to make.”

    What’s next for ‘Scream’?

Obviously losing its two main stars (Ortega in particular had been a big draw for the last couple of movies) is a huge issue for the ‘Scream’ series, and it’ll mean some serious reconsideration in creative terms.

There are certainly paths forward, including a movie that returns the focus to the surviving veteran cast, including Courteney Cox (and potentially backing a dump truck full of money to Neve Campbell’s house to try and tempt her back after she skipped the most recent film) or going the reboot route completely with a fresh cast trying survive Ghostface’s stalk-and-slash machinations.

When will the next ‘Scream’ movie be in theaters?

As of now, the new ‘Scream’ is not far enough along to lock down a release date. Especially given that it’ll need a giant re-write…

    • Pedro Pascal appears to be headed to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
    • He’s in talks to play Reed Richards in ‘Fantastic Four’.
    • ‘WandaVision’s Matt Shakman is attached to direct the movie.

Is there anything Pedro Pascal can’t do on the genre front? He’s already a firm part of the ‘Star Wars’ universe thanks to his role on ‘The Mandalorian’.

And he’s been at the forefront of the successful video game adaptation genre via the role of Joel in ‘The Last of Us’ on HBO, not to mention a previous role on the channel’s megahit ‘Game of Thrones’.

Now, it appears, he’s headed for possibly his most high-profile job of all: Pascal is, according to Deadline, in serious talks for the role of Reed Richards, AKA Mr. Fantastic in the MCU’s ‘Fantastic Four’.

Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby for ‘Fantastic Four #1’, first published in 1961, Richards is a scientific genius and the leader of the Fantastic Four team.

When he and his colleagues were bombarded with cosmic radiation, Richards ended up with the ability to contort and stretch his body in different ways.

Along with Sue Storm (his main love interest, who has the power to generate forcefields and turn invisible, earning the name Invisible Woman), Johnny Storm (Sue’s cocky younger brother, who becomes a being of flame known as the Human Torch and can fly) and Ben Grimm (Reed’s best friend who ends up covered in a rocky substance, becoming near invincible and super strong, and is called The Thing), he battles various enemies and has been a key part of the Marvel Comics universe for decades.

In movie form, he’s been brought to screens a few times, including an authorized Roger Corman production. But in terms of official movies, Ioan Gruffudd played him in two films based on the characters directed by Tim Story in 2005 and 2007 and Miles Teller in a moodier, darker and ultimately unsuccessful reboot in 2015, all released by 20th Century Fox.

When Disney bought Fox, they inherited the company’s Marvel properties including the FF and the X-Men.

At the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige announced, after fervent fan speculation, that the Four would be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a new movie, via another reboot.

The following August, MCU ‘Spider-Man’ trilogy director John Watts was announced as director, but stepped down in April 2022, deciding he needed a break from superhero movies (he’s since worked on a ‘Star Wars’ TV series).

Currently, ‘WandaVision’s Matt Shakman is on board as director, with Josh Friedman (who worked on the most recent ‘Avatar’ movie) writing the script.

And there was a surprise for fans during ‘Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness’ when John Krasinski showed up as a variant of Reed. Despite fan casting efforts, he was never confirmed to be taking on the role full time.

And the likes of Penn Badgley and even Ryan Gosling have been rumored.

Here’s what Kevin Feige has said about the importance of the characters to Entertainment Weekly:

“Fantastic Four is the foundation for everything that came after in the comics. There’s certainly been versions of it [on screen], but never inhabiting the storytelling of the MCU. And that’s something that is really exciting for us.”

While the caution is that a deal is far from done (the ever-busy Pascal has a packed schedule to work around, including finishing up ‘Gladiator 2’, the next season of ‘The Last of Us’ and Zach Cregger’s follow-up to ‘Barbarians’, ‘Weapons’.

If Pascal is indeed confirmed, expect the other casting to fall into place before too long.

When is ‘Fantastic Four’ due in theaters?

Assuming it keeps to its schedule, the movie should be released on May 2, 2025.
