The Bad Seed” and “You” (Sunday on Lifetime at 8 and 10 p.m.)
“Sharknado” is over, so we need something new for the so-bad-it’s-good file. No promises — ’cause these might be so good they’re good — but Lifetime has a couple of contenders airing September 9:

Rob Lowe is directing and starring in a remake of the Oscar-nominated 1956 thriller “The Bad Seed.” Mckenna Grace plays the title character bad seed.  Patty McCormack, who played the young girl in the original movie, has been cast for a co-starring role in the remake.

    •  “You,” starring Penn Badgley, Shay Mitchell, Elizabeth Lail, and John Stamos, has already been renewed for a second season. So it’s OK if you get hooked. The story follows bookstore manager Joe, who falls in love with a customer named Beck and quickly becomes obsessed with her.

  • Rotten Tomatoes Stands By ‘Gotti’ Audience Score Amid Skepticism

The new John Travolta movie “Gotti” has a rare 0 percent rating from 28 critics on Rotten Tomatoes. However, that’s in stark contrast to the current Audience Score of 64 percent.

But some fans are questioning the validity of the Audience Score. For one, it’s based on more than 7,000 user ratings. That’s a lot for a movie that opened to $1.7 million from just 503 theaters. As several people have pointed out, “Incredibles 2” only has a few more RT user ratings, and it opened in 4,410 theaters and made more than $180 million in its opening weekend. In comparison, IMDb users gave “Gotti” a rating of 4.8/10, based on (as of this moment) 987 reviews.

So where did all of those RT user reviews come from?

“Gotti” turned the fan vs. critic disparity into a marketing tool:

MoviePass was one of the financiers of “Gotti,” and became involved in the debate on the RT user ratings. (Full disclosure: MoviePass recently bought Moviefone.)

When one fan examined the “Gotti” RT user reviews, here’s what they claim they found:

    “[O]f the first 58 reviewers with an available profile, 45 had created their account on June 2018;

Out of these 45, 32 have only reviewed Gotti, 10 reviewed Gotti and another movie (7 times it was American Animals [another film owned by MoviePass]) and 3 had more than 3 reviews.

Of the remaining 13 accounts 8 looked normal and 5 had created their account in December (TLJ?) so those were probably legit.”

Gizmodo asked Rotten Tomatoes if any unusual activity was noticed in the “Gotti” user ratings. Here’s the spokesperson’s response:

“We closely monitor our platforms and haven’t determined there to be any problems. All of the reviews were left by active accounts.”

Gizmodo also asked MoviePass for comment on the rumors it was involved in spiking the user ratings; here’s the response:

“The MoviePass marketing team is only engaged in sending promotional emails and push notifications to our users. We have no further involvement from a marketing perspective and have no insight or information about who is providing the audience reviews to Rotten Tomatoes.”

It could be that John Travolta and his friends are doing their own marketing push. Could be a reaction to Rotten Tomatoes itself, from critics of the critics, who like to support things that get trashed on RT.

“Gotti” would not be the first film to face a massive divide between critics and fans. Netflix’s “Bright” was blasted by critics but embraced by fans. And right now “Hereditary” has a 90 percent fresh rating on the Tomatometer with an Audience Score of only 56 percent. Actresses like Reese Witherspoon and Brie Larson have called for more diversity in film critics, to better reflect the movie-going public, because reviews can often make or break a project.

On Metacritic, “Gotti” has a Metascore of 24, with a User Score of 4.4. That’s from 7 positive and 8 negative reviews. No one is “Mixed.”

  • Box Office: ‘Ocean’s 8’ Has Best Opening of Franchise, ‘Jurassic World 2’ Huge Overseas

Ocean’s 8” stole the box office crown this week from “Solo,” pushing it down — and way down at that — to No. 2.

The Sandra Bullock/Cate Blanchett-fronted “Ocean’s” sequel opened to $41.5 million. That’s a bit higher than the best opening of the George Clooney/Brad Pitt trilogy, “Ocean’s Twelve” in 2004, with $39.1 million.

Second place went to “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” but it didn’t even get half of the “Ocean’s 8” money this week, settling for $15.1M at second place. (Last week it topped the box office with a sad second week tally of just under $30 million.)

“Deadpool 2” edged out new horror-thriller “Hereditary,” but barely.

The “Deadpool” sequel reported $13.65 million for No. 3 on this week’s box office chart, with Toni Collette’s horror at $13.03 million for No. 4.

Still, that was a record for indie studio A24; as Deadline noted, “Heredity” topped their previous big opener — “The Witch” — by nearly 40 percent. “Hereditary” is riding rave reviews from critics, although audiences don’t seem quite as sold. (“Hereditary” actually ended up with a savage D+ CinemaScore, which … actually, the dichotomy of rave reviews and a D+ may help sell even more tickets. At least you won’t just shrug it off!)

The other major newbie of the week, “Hotel Artemis,” had to setting for No. 8 at the box office, with $3.1 million. That’s below the indefatigable “Avengers: Infinity War” at No. 5 with another $6.8 million (putting it *thisclose* to $2 billion), last week’s debut “Adrift” at No. 6 with $5.05 million, and “Book Club” still in the game with $4.2 million at No. 7.

Meanwhile, “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” is already devouring prey at the international box office, which is a good way to get itself early headlines. It won’t open in North America until June 22 — after “Incredibles 2” takes over next week — but the “Jurassic World” sequel debuted in 48 markets overseas, earning itself a hefty $151.1 million for its international opening.

What’s next? “Incredibles 2” has every plan to beat “Finding Dory” for the record of best animated opening, when it arrives in U.S. theaters this coming Friday, June 15. And then “Jurassic World 2” will probably take the crown for its North American debut on June 22, but it may still be a close race between supes and dinos.

  • ‘Hereditary’ Wins Horror Fans’ Hearts as ‘a Masterpiece of Freaky Filmmaking’

Ocean’s 8” and “Hotel Artemis” may get the most attention this opening weekend, but don’t sleep on “Hereditary.”

Or, rather, if you watch “Hereditary,” you may not sleep.

The indie horror thriller starring Toni Collette has quietly picked up a lot of effusive praise as a modern horror hit. Not only does it have a Rotten Tomatoes score of 94 percent from 128 reviews (as of this writing), its Metascore is 87/100. So critics didn’t just approve of it enough to say it’s “fresh” over “rotten”, they REALLY liked it. For comparison’s sake, “A Quiet Place” — another recent indie horror darling — has a Metascore of 82.

Here’s a sampling of critics’ blurbs, in case you’re on the fence about seeing this one:

    • “No shot seems wasted, the editing is a sturdy and linear rebuke to the quick-cut madness that’s infected so many recent genre films, and the sound and set design are meticulous and spare.” — Barry Hertz, Globe and Mail

    • “[A] terrifying thriller that pins you to the back of your chair and leaves you paralyzed in fear.” — Adam Graham, Detroit News

    • “Forget the ‘scarier than The Exorcist’ line (whatever that means) that Hereditary has been tagged with – this is a movie that lives up to the hype on its own terms.” — Hugh Armitage, Digital Spy

    • “a masterpiece of freaky filmmaking, unsettling from its very first image through its hellish denouement.” — Laura Clifford, Reeling Reviews

    • “This is a horror film for the ages, a slowly unraveling puzzle of psychological torment that promises an amazing career from freshman feature writer-director Ari Aster.” — Leigh Monson, Birth.Movies.Death.

    • “Hereditary” is closer in tone to the likes of “The Babadook,” “It Follows,” “A Quiet Place” and “It Comes at Night,” where the dread and fear come not from what you see but what you think you might see.” — Cary Darling, Houston Chronicle

    • “[Ari] Aster has spent a lot of time studying “The Shining,” “The Exorcist,” and “Rosemary’s Baby.” It’s nice to have a classicist back in town.” — Ty Burr, Boston Globe

    • “Through a traumatic story of familial grief, debuting director Ari Aster has pulled off a relentless horror film, possibly a new genre classic, with scares for the ages.” — Tomris Laffly, Film Journal International

    • “[Hereditary is] a movie so horrifying and good that you have to see it, even if you shouldn’t want to, even if you might never sleep peacefully again.” — Jake Coyle, Associated Press

    • “If there’s a better horror movie this year, I’m going to need new pants.” — Eric D. Snider, Crooked Marquee

Toni Collette is due more awards love. It would be amazing to see this get her there. Why not? “Get Out” just showed, once again, that horror movies can and should be taken seriously alongside dramas.

However, not everyone was charmed, so here’s one warning shot from a more critical critic:

    • “Hereditary takes itself too seriously, it’s too long, too predictable and frequently frustrating.” — Michael Smith, Tulsa World

“Hereditary” — which played its trailer ahead of “Peter Rabbit” that one time in Australia, #classic — also stars Gabriel Byrne, Alex Wolff, Ann Dowd, Milly Shapiro, Mallory Bechtel, and Brock McKinney. It is now in theaters.

  • ‘Heredity’ Studio Trolls ‘Peter Rabbit’ After Horror Trailer Accidentally Plays for Kids

Oops. The studio behind “Heredity” is laughing off a case of mistaken trailer play in Perth, Western Australia.

Apparently a projectionist accidentally played the trailer for the R-rated horror movie before “Peter Rabbit,” confusing and upsetting the families expecting PG entertainment.

The trailer for the Toni Collette horror movie — plugged as “this generation’s The Exorcist” — included “scenes of scissors being pinched into a dead pigeon’s neck, a corpse laid out in a coffin, a boy bloodily smashing his head into a desk and a man on fire, all set to tense music and sharp sound effects.”

So not what the parents had in mind for their kids. Here’s what one woman told the Sydney Morning Herald:

“It was dreadful. Very quickly you could tell this was not a kid’s film. Parents were yelling at the projectionist to stop, covering their kids’ eyes and ears. A few went out to get a staff member but she was overwhelmed and didn’t really know what to do. Some parents fled the cinema with their kids in tow. Eventually a senior staff member came in with a walkie talkie and he shut the screen off. To his credit he apologised and offered us complimentary movie passes to make up for it.”

Fled the cinema! If this was the trailer they saw, it takes a while before it gets really dark:Well, A24 — the studio behind “Heredity” — had some fun with the incident and even mocked “Peter Rabbit” for its controversial food allergy bullying scene:

Shots fired. Poor Peter Rabbit. That movie’s studio apologized for the food allergy scene. “Peter Rabbit” is coming out on Blu-ray/DVD here in the States next week. Meanwhile, “Heredity” just got some extra publicity before it opens in theaters on June 8.
