  • Uma Thurman and Henry Golding Join ‘The Old Guard 2’

Debuting in the pandemic-rocked summer of 2020, action movie ‘The Old Guard’ was a bit hit for Netflix, with the streaming service reporting audiences watching it for more than 186 hours during the first month the film was out.

A sequel was quickly commissioned, and thanks to Netflix’s Geeked Week news releases, we now know that Uma Thurman and Henry Golding will be part of the cast.

Gina Prince-Bythewood’s original movie, based on the graphic novel series created by Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernández, follows Andromache of Scythia, (AKA “Andy”, played by Charlize Theron), who has been around since the 8th century BCE. Along with her immortal companions, she’s making amends for past violence and trying to make the world better, her team acting as secret superheroes who occasionally get their hands dirty. Their presence is revealed just as a potential new immortal (KiKi Layne’s Nile) comes on the scene and ultimately ends up joining the team.

At the end of the first film, Andy lost her immortality and discovered that her old friend Quynh (Veronica Ngo), believed to be lost forever, was back and, as you might understand, a little miffed at having spent centuries locked in a chest at the bottom of the ocean, with a potential conflict brewing against Andy. And then there’s Booker (Matthias Schoenaerts), who had had enough of do-gooding and turned against the rest.

Theron will be back alongside returning names Ngo, Layne, Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

How Thurman and Golding fit into the story as it moves forward isn’t yet known, though if you wanted, you could hunt through the graphic novels for clues. Rucka has once more written the script, but with Prince-Bythewood busy, ‘Lovecraft Country’s Victoria Mahoney is taking on directing duties this time around.

Thurman and Golding both have action credentials, even if they’ve been known for other genres. ‘Kill Bill’ cemented Thurman as someone who knows how to swing a sword and kick plenty of butt, and she’s occasionally had the chance to demonstrate those skills since. The world of ‘The Old Guard’ certainly feels like a good fit for her, and if all involved has thought this through, the chance to see a Theron vs. Thurman smackdown would not go amiss.

Golding, meanwhile, broke out in ‘Crazy Rich Asians’, but trained hard for last year’s ‘G.I. Joe’ spin-off ‘Snake Eyes’ and while the movie itself didn’t really impress fans, it wasn’t for lack of Golding’s effort.

The ‘Old Guard’ follow-up should be shooting soon, so if you see Charlize Theron on a street kicking ass, it’s not just her morning workout routine.

Netflix has yet to reveal when the new movie might hit its servers, but we can imagine the company will want to launch the sequel in 2023.

  • ‘A Simple Favor’ Sequel in the Works

    Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively

Twisty thriller ‘A Simple Favor’ was a hit back in 2018, and now many of the people involved are getting back together for a sequel.

According to Deadline, stars Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively will both return, alongside director Paul Feig and writer Jessica Sharzer.

‘A Simple Favor’, adapted from Darcey Bell’s novel, told the story of widowed single mother and crafting/parenting vlogger Stephanie Smothers (Kendrick), who strikes up an unexpected friendship with glamorous fellow mother Emily Nelson (Lively). The two share drinks and swap stories, though the power dynamic in the friendship always seems weighted towards the more confident, secretive Emily.

When Stephanie agrees to look after Emily’s son, Emily then goes missing, leading Stephanie and Emily’s husband Sean Townsend (Henry Golding) to investigate what happened – and to start up a relationship of their own.

We won’t spoil what happens next in case you haven’t read the book or seen the original movie, but while ‘Favor’ does feature a relatively wrapped-up ending, it also leaves some ideas for a potential follow-up, which is where Lionsgate (which originally plucked the first movie from the depths of 20th Century Fox development and brought it to screens), and Amazon Studios are headed. Especially since that movie made $97 million worldwide from a $20 million budget.

Bell hasn’t written a sequel book, so the movie will be an original story featuring the same characters. Quite what happens in the new movie is a mystery for now.

All the various people involved are busy with other projects right now – Lively recently set up her directorial debut, looking to adapt ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. The World writer Bryan Lee O’Malley’s ‘Seconds’, with Edgar Wright working on the script.

Feig has his latest directorial outing, ‘The School for Good and Evil’ headed to Netflix. The movie, which adapts Soman Chainani’s book, follows the adventures of best friends Sophie and Agatha at the titular school, where ordinary kids are trained to be fairy tale heroes and villains. Sophie (Sophia Ann Caruso) has princess aspirations and expects to be picked for the School for Good and Agatha (Sofia Wylie) seems a natural fit for the villains in the School for Evil. Yet soon the girls find their fortunes reversed, putting their friendship to a test…

Kerry Washington, Michelle Yeoh, Charlize Theron, and Ben Kingsley are all in the cast for that one, which doesn’t have a release date confirmed yet but should be on Netflix this year.

Kendrick last appeared in another Netflix movie, the sci-fi thriller ‘Stowaway’ and has also been busy lending her voice to the ‘Trolls’ franchise. Her next movie to arrive is Mary Nighy’s ‘Alice, Darling’, in which Kendrick plays a woman trapped in an abusive relationship becomes the focus of an intervention staged by her best friends. Wunmi Mosaku and Kaniehtiio Horn are also in that one.

‘Warrior’ Star Andrew Koji Joins ‘G.I. Joe: Snake Eyes’ Opposite Henry Golding

    Cinemax

The “G.I. Joe: Snake Eyes” spinoff has found a new “Warrior” to add to the mix.

Andrew Koji, the star of Cinemax’s martial arts Western “Warrior,” is joining the cast of “G.I. Joe: Snake Eyes. He’ll play Storm Shadow opposite “Crazy Rich Asians” breakout Henry Golding, who is set as the titular ninja commando.

In the comic book, Snake Eyes is revealed to be the brother of Storm Shadow, who works for G.I. Joe’s main enemy, Cobra.

The studio has been looking to reboot/revive the franchise, which has spawned two movies, 2009’s “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra” and 2013’s “G.I Joe: Retaliation.” Ray Park played Snake Eyes in both movies.

Snake Eyes is the silent ninja commando who first appeared in the 1980s as part of Hasbro and Marvel Comics’ relaunch of the G.I. Joe toy line. He never reveals his face, wears all black, and sometimes carries out missions with pet wolf Timber. He has a romantic relationship with fellow team member Scarlett and his nemesis is blood brother ninja Storm Shadow.

Robert Schwentke (two of the “Divergent” movies) is on board to direct the spinoff film.

  • ‘Last Christmas’ Trailer: Emilia Clarke, Henry Golding Fall in Love to the Songs of George Michael

    Universal

‘Tis the season to fall in love!

The first trailer for “Last Christmas” pairs up Emilia Clarke (“Game of Thrones”) and Henry Golding (“Crazy Rich Asians”) for a holiday romantic comedy from Paul Feig.

Clarke plays Kate, a bundle of bad decisions who isn’t too happy with her job as an elf in a year-round Christmas store. Then, she runs into Tom (Golding), who seems too good to be true — handsome, funny, charitable, with the ability to see through Kate’s barriers.

As London transforms into the most wonderful time of the year, Kate starts to realize she can turn her life around — you gotta have faith.

Yes, as the title indicates, the movie is backed by a soundtrack filled with songs by the late George Michael, including that bittersweet holiday tune. The movie will also premiere new, unreleased material by the legendary Grammy-winning artist.

“Last Christmas” also stars Emma Thompson and Michelle Yeoh, and opens in theaters November 8.

  • Henry Golding Starts Production Company, Lines Up 2 Action Movies

Henry Golding Starts Production Company, Lines Up 2 Action Movies

    Warner Bros.

Crazy Rich Asians” star Henry Golding isn’t just relying on the hit franchise for work.

The Malaysian-born actor just started Long House Productions in partnership with China’s Starlight Cultural Entertainment Group.

He already has two action films in the works: The first is “The Inheritance,” based on an original story idea by Golding and Alistair Hudson, who will write the script.

He will also star in and produce the action-thriller “Harrington’s Greatest Hits” as an aging assassin discovers that his arms-dealing father has put out a contract on him. James Strong (whose credits include “Broadchurch” and “Downton Abbey”) will direct the Black List script by Dutch Southern.

“I am excited to bring the unique stories that come from my experiences and the time I’ve spent living in Asia, London, America, and all over the world, to the movies that I work on and the material I look forward to developing,” Golding said in a statement.

Starlight is a Chinese-based firm that invested in “Crazy Rich Asians.” The company, which has offices in Beverly Hills, has also made deals with “Aquaman” director James Wan, F. Gary Gray, and Roland Emmerich.

“Henry is the only actor/producer with a deal here, because we see him as a class of one,” said Starlight CEO and ATC managing director Peter Luo.

Besides “Crazy Rich Asians,” Golding’s recent credits include “A Simple Favor” and the upcoming “Last Christmas” and the Guy Ritchie thriller “The Gentlemen.”

  • Emilia Clarke, Henry Golding Romantic Comedy ‘Last Christmas’ Release Date Moved Up

Emilia Clarke, Henry Golding Romantic Comedy ‘Last Christmas’ Release Date Moved Up

    Lucasfilm/Warner Bros.

Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding will get to romance each other one week earlier.

Universal is moving up “Last Christmas,” the Paul Feig-directed romantic comedy starring the “Game of Thrones” star, the “Crazy Rich Asians” breakout, and Emma Thompson. It will now open November 8, 2019, instead of November 15.

“Last Christmas” is inspired by the hit song by the late George Michael and will feature unreleased music by the former Wham singer.

The story follows Kate (Clarke), who harrumphs around London, a bundle of bad decisions accompanied by the jangle of bells on her shoes, another irritating consequence from her job as an elf in a year-round Christmas shop. Tom (Golding) seems too good to be true when he walks into her life and starts to see through so many of Kate’s barriers. As London transforms into the most wonderful time of the year, nothing should work for these two.

The upcoming holiday rom-com “Last Christmas” has added another “Crazy Rich Asians” star.

Acclaimed actress Michelle Yeoh has boarded the project, Variety reports. The move means she’ll again co-star with Henry Golding, who played her son in the hit summer film “Crazy Rich Asians.” Yeoh’s new cast mates also include “Game of Thrones” star Emilia Clarke.

Directed by Paul Feig, the film is written by Emma Thompson and Bryony Kimmings. It centers on a London woman named Kate (Clarke), who has a history of making poor decisions. She’ll apparently be working as an elf at a year-round Christmas store when she meets a man named Tom (Golding), whom she finds suspiciously perfect. We don’t know how Yeoh fits into the story at this point, but as Golding said in a tweet, adding her into the already-talented mix means the movie will be “ridonkulous.”

The prolific actress stars in films in Mandarin, Cantonese, and English, and she has an impressive body of work. Some of the English-language films she’s best known for include 2000’s “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” 2005’s “Memoirs of a Geisha,” 2017’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” and the aforementioned “Crazy Rich Asians.” She recently also had a recurring role in “Star Trek: Discovery” Season 1.

“Last Christmas” is scheduled for release on Nov. 15, 2019.

  • The ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Sequel Plans to Shoot in China

The ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Sequel Plans to Shoot in China

    Warner Bros.

Hot off its spectacular success at the box office this summer, rom-com “Crazy Rich Asians” will finally be released in China in November. And that’s apparently an important first step toward studio Warner Bros.’s ultimate goal of filming the movie’s sequel in China.

Variety reports that production company SK Global announced plans on Monday to shoot “China Rich Girlfriend” — the second novel in Kevin Kwan’s “Crazy Rich Asians” trilogy — in Shanghai. The book takes place largely in China, and is set two years after the events of the first book/movie.

It’s not known yet when production will begin on “China Rich Girlfriend,” and that may be because producers are still deciding whether to pursue making the flick an official U.S.-China co-production. According to John Penotti, the president of SK Global, producers tried to work out a similar deal for the first flick, but that plan fell through.

Another snag “Crazy Rich Asians” faced was its ability to play in front of Chinese audiences. China limits the international films that are shown in its theaters, and the flick  spent months waiting for approval for release from the government. Thankfully, it has cleared that hurdle, and will finally premiere in the country on November 30.

Though the film’s success in China has no bearing on whether or not its sequel will get made, we’re still hoping it pulls in some big numbers there. That may help it secure the locations needed to get “China Rich Girlfriend” off the ground sooner rather than later.

  • ‘Toff Guys’ to Star Matthew McConaughey, Kate Beckinsale, and Henry Golding

‘Toff Guys’ to Star Matthew McConaughey, Kate Beckinsale, and Henry Golding

    Sony Pictures Releasing; Rogue; Lionsgate

The Guy Ritchie-directed crime drama “Toff Guys” is putting together a talented cast.

Matthew McConaughey, Kate Beckinsale, and Henry Golding have all claimed starring roles in the upcoming film, Variety reports. They’ll help tell the story about British drug lord who is looking to sell his empire to a moneyed family from Oklahoma. The film will reportedly be similar to some of Ritchie’s past work, including the 1998 comedy “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels” and 2000’s “Snatch.” He wrote the script alongside Marn Davies and Ivan Atkinson.

The trio of stars has a number of big films behind them. McConaughey is an Academy Award winner for his role in 2014’s “Dallas Buyers Club,” and he more recently has starred in the films “White Boy Rick” and “The Dark Tower.” Beckinsale’s recent films include “Farming” and “The Only Living Boy in New York.” Meanwhile, Golding hit it big this summer with “Crazy Rich Asians” and “A Simple Favor.”

The rest of the cast has yet to be announced, but we like what we’re seeing from “Toff Guys” so far. Production is scheduled to begin this fall, and a release date will be announced in the coming months.
