    There is yet more positive forward movement for the ‘Masters of the Universe’ movie that Amazon MGM Studios has been putting together as another key piece of casting news has arrived.

    According to The Hollywood Reporter, Alison Brie, best known for the likes of ‘Community’ and Netflix wrestling drama ‘GLOW’, has landed the role of Evil-Lyn in the new film.

    It’s the latest update for the movie, which already has ‘The Idea of You’s Nicholas Galitzine, who is playing heroic central figure He-Man, alongside Camila Mendes, who will be warrior Teela.

    Travis Knight, more usually found overseeing stop-motion animated movies for the Laika company, but who also directed ‘Bumblebee’, is on hand for the new live-action effort.

    ‘He-Man and the Masters of the Universe’ follows Prince Adam, who has a magic sword that turns him into the powerful He-Man. He and his comrades (including Teela, the Captain of the Royal Guard) must protect the planet of Eternia from the evil machinations of villain Skeletor (whose acolytes include Evil-Lyn).

    A live-action big screen version in 1987 starring Dolph Lundgren as He-Man and Frank Langella as Skeletor flopped at the box office, which scuttled a planned sequel.

    The new live-action version has torn a path through filmmakers and studios. Directors such as ‘Face/Off’s John Woo, ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Jon M. Chu and ‘Truth Or Dare’s Jeff Wadlow have been attached at one time or another, but the movie has always fallen apart.

    Netflix was the most recent company to try, hiring directing siblings Adam and Aaron Nee, the duo behind 2015’s indie movie ‘Band of Robbers’ and 2022’s ‘The Lost City’, who were also attached to a Sony attempt, working on the script with ‘Man Of Steel’s David S. Goyer.

    Knight is working from a new draft of the script by Chris Butler –– to whom he’s already connected, as Butler has written or directed several animated movies produced by Knight’s Laika studio.

    The new movie reportedly (there has been no official confirmation) revolves around 9–year-old Prince Adam crashing to Earth in a spaceship and being separated from his Magical Sword –– the only link to his home on Eternia.

    After tracking it down almost two decades later, Adam is whisked back across space to defend his home planet against the evil forces of Skeletor. But to defeat such a powerful villain, Prince Adam first will need to uncover the mysteries of his past and become He-Man — the most powerful man in the universe.

    Who is Evil-Lyn?

    As her name implies, she does not align with the forces of good. Evil-Lyn is Skeletor’s second-in-command and uses a wand with a crystal orb to practice the dark arts.

    Meg Foster portrayed the character in the 1987 live-action movie.

    Brie’s casting is interesting and could be a lot of fun. And does it indicate a more comedic bent than we thought?

    Alongside the aforementioned ‘Community’ and ‘GLOW’, Brie has been seen in the TV likes of ‘Mad Men’ and ‘Apples Never Fall.’

    She’s not normally one for big IP movies; though she did voice Unikitty in ‘The LEGO Movie’ and its spin-off. Brie is more usually found in the indie likes of ‘Somebody I Used to Know’ (which she co-wrote and produced with husband Dave Franco) and ‘Promising Young Woman.’

    After defeating previous efforts to turn it into a new movie, the 1980s ‘Masters of the Universe’ toy line (and its attendant cartoon series) might finally have met its match.

    Though the ‘Masters’ concept has led to success for Netflix on the small screen, it is Amazon MGM that has spearheaded a fresh cinematic take on the concept, with ‘The Idea of You’s Nicholas Galitzine playing central character He-Man and ‘Bumblebee’s Travis Knight directing.

    Now, via Deadline, we have word that ‘Riverdale’s Camila Mendes will also be aboard the film, playing warrior woman Teela.

    Galitzine has become something of an Amazon staple, appearing in Prime Video series ‘Red, White & Royal Blue’, and, more recently in the company’s romantic drama ‘The Idea of You’ opposite Anne Hathaway.

    He’s also been seen in the likes of ‘Mary & George’, ‘Bottoms’, ‘Purple Hearts’, ‘The Craft Legacy’, ‘The Beat Beneath My Feet’ and the 2021 adaptation of ‘Cinderella’, which starred Camila Cabello.

    If Knight does make a deal to direct, he’ll be working from a new draft of the script by Chris Butler –– to whom he’s already connected, as Butler has written or directed several animated movies produced by Knight’s Laika stop-motion animation studio.

    Like perma-grinning villain Skeletor’s evil schemes, the many attempts to make a new, live-action ‘Masters of the Universe’ movie have failed. Netflix thinks it can change that, taking on the rights to the characters and hiring actor Kyle Allen to play main hero He-Man.

    This latest development comes as the streaming service grabbed the rights to make the film from Sony, which had been planning its own movie with Noah Centineo lined up as He-Man.

    Sony was just the latest studio taking a crack at making a live-action adaptation of the toy series. Directors such as ‘Face/Off’s John Woo, ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Jon M. Chu and ‘Truth Or Dare’s Jeff Wadlow have been attached at one time or another, but the movie has always fallen apart.

    Directing siblings Adam and Aaron Nee, the duo behind 2015’s indie movie ‘Band of Robbers’ were most recently attached to Sony’s attempt, working on the script with ‘Man Of Steel’s David S. Goyer. Since then, they’ve made adventure comedy ‘The Lost City’, starring Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum, due out this year. The filmmakers are staying part of the package for the Netflix movie, re-writing their work alongside ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ Dave Callaham.

    Sony is staying in the mix in one way, though – it’s holding on to the rights to distribute the movie in China, where Netflix doesn’t have a presence.

    Netflix is all in on its deal with Mattel for He-Man and co, having already produced ‘Masters of the Universe: Revelation (developed by ‘Clerks’ filmmaker Kevin Smith as an update to the original concept), featuring Mark Hamill, Lena Headey, and Sarah Michelle Gellar among its voices. There’s also ‘He-Man and the Masters of the Universe’, which is a more traditional take on the tale, albeit one using 3D animation.

    Allen, who played Balkan in Steven Spielberg’s new version of ‘West Side Story’, also appeared in movies including ‘The Map of Tiny Perfect Things’ and on TV in ‘The Path’, and ‘American Horror Story’. He’ll no doubt be busy bulking up to play the muscular hero, as filming will start this summer.

    Kevin Smith will be tapping into the Power of Grey Skull for a new He-Man anime series he’s producing for Netflix.

    The filmmaker revealed the surprise news to fans at Power-Con on Sunday that he is making “Masters of the Universe: Revelation,” an original story based on the world of Mattel’s classic ’80s He-Man toy franchise.

    Smith will serve as showrunner and executive producer of the series, which will continue unresolved storylines of the franchise and pick up the characters’ journeys where they left off decades ago.

    “I’m Eternia-ly grateful to Mattel TV and Netflix for entrusting me with not only the secrets of Grayskull, but also their entire Universe,” Smith said in a statement.

    “In ‘Revelation,’ we pick up right where the classic era left off to tell an epic tale of what may be the final battle between He-Man and Skeletor! … This is the Masters of the Universe story you always wanted to see as a kid!”

    Netflix is also home to “She-Ra and the Princesses of Power.” In the ’80s series, She-Ra is the sister of He-Man. It’s unclear if the two Netflix series will crossover.
