    • New images from ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ have arrived.
    • Director Todd Phillips has also talked a potential trailer date.
    • The movie is out in October.

In this social media age, it’s not unusual for filmmakers to be pressed into (or want to) use their personal channels to promote their work. And Todd Phillips, who is busy in post-production on ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’, the follow-up to his billion-dollar-plus (not to mention Oscar-winning) 2019 take on the classic Batman villain, has been drip-feeding images from the new movie for months now.

The filmmaker used Valentine’s Day as an excuse to offer new pics of his central pair –– that would be Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck/Joker and Lady Gaga as a version of his ride-or-die romantic pairing (and frequent partner in crime) Harley Quinn.

Quite what Phillips’ take on Quinn will be remains to be seen, but since his (and Phoenix’s) version of the Joker origin story stands in stark contrast to Batman lore, we’re anticipating tweaks.

What’s the story of ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’?

Not much is officially known about the new movie, but with Phillips co-writing once again alongside Scott Silver, ‘Folie à Deux’ promises more bad behavior from Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck, joined now by Gaga’s Quinn.

We’ll pick up the story Phoenix’s Fleck, the wannabe comedian struggling with mental health issues who, besieged by disappointment and fueled by rage, slowly segues into a psychopathic killer and agent of chaos.

Fleck ended up in Arkham Asylum –– the infamous facility for psychotic criminals from the ‘Batman’ comic book universe, and the new movie appears to take place to some degree there.

Arkham is where the Joker (usually, at least) meets one Dr. Harleen Frances Quinzel, who eventually becomes obsessed with him –– and he, in turn, slowly drives her insane until she becomes Harley Quinn, the character who has long been part of comics canon and most recently on the big screen by Margot Robbie in the ‘Suicide Squad’ movies and her own spin-off.

There will be some carry over from the first movie –– Zazie Beetz is back as Sophie Dumond, the neighbor with whom Arthur had a relationship (at least until, spoiler alert, it was revealed as all in his head).

Who else is new in the ‘Joker’ sequel?

The new cast also includes Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Bill Smitrovich and Jacob Lofland are all in the ensemble.

Is ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ a musical?

Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga in 'Joker: Folie à Deux.'

One of the biggest elements of speculation for the new film has been the idea it is a musical. But according to cinematographer Lawrence Sher, it might not be the song-filled experience we’ve all been expecting.

Here’s what Sher said on a recent Zoom call:

“It’s not a musical per se, it just has music in it, that’s all. Music’s a part of the movie and the characters, but I don’t know if it’s a musical.”

Of course, he could always be trying to throw us all off the scent. More of a clue will come in the teasers and trailers. And talking of…

When will the ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ trailer be out?

Phillips responded to a comment on his Insta post asking about when we might see the trailer.

    Here’s what he said:

“Been getting this question a lot. The movie comes out in October. So our first teaser won’t be out until mid-April.”

When is ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ in theaters?

‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ will land in theaters on October 4th.

  • Brendan Gleeson Joins the ‘Joker’ Sequel

Brendan Gleeson and Colin Farrell star in Martin McDonagh's 'In Bruges,' a Focus Features release.
(L to R) Brendan Gleeson and Colin Farrell star in Martin McDonagh’s ‘In Bruges,’ a Focus Features release.

There is a lot we still don’t know about ‘Joker’ sequel ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’, but the cast is clearly coming together for Todd Phillips’ latest movie.

His most recent addition, at least according to Deadline’s sources, is Brendan Gleeson.

Gleeson joins Joaquin Phoenix, Lady Gaga and Zazie Beetz in the movie, which is looking to incorporate more of a musical element this time around (how that will present in the film is, like everything else, still unknown for now).

Phoenix, of course, is returning as Arthur Fleck, the wannabe comedian-turned-chaos merchant who caused such havoc in Gotham city, spreading murder and mayhem, and who ended up locked away in Arkham Asylum.

Beetz is reprising her role as Sophie Dumond, the single mother and object of Arthur’s affections, even if it turned out to be a fantasy in his head.

As for Gaga, her character has yet to be officially revealed, though there is plenty of chatter at her playing iconic Joker character Harley Quinn, his psychiatrist at Arkham who falls in love with him and becomes his sidekick and partner in crime.

    DC Comics' Harley Quinn.
    DC Comics’ Harley Quinn.

Likewise, Let the speculation commence for how Gleeson might fit into Phillips’ grungy Gotham world. Could he be Commissioner Gordon? Or might he be on the other side of the law, playing a prisoner-patient of Arkham and one of Batman’s rogue’s gallery? Or something new entirely? The possibilities are almost endless…

Co-writer Scott Silver and Phillips have been hard at work on drafts of the script, and the movie’s current working title is ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ which translates to the term for a mental disorder that affects more than one person. And that’s definitely a good way to describe the viral chaos that Arthur Fleck began scattering around Gotham in the original.

How closely the new movie will hew to established DC lore is unknown at this point – we’d honestly put money on Phillips continuing to chart his own path, picking and choosing how Fleck’s story intersects with the wider Bat-world. And from the sounds of everything we’ve heard so far, this represents the filmmakers branching out from the 1970s crime vibe of the original.

Gleeson is probably still best known for his appearances in several ‘Harry Potter’ movies, though he’s also made a name for himself in the indie world, working on the likes of ‘In Bruges’ and ‘Calvary’.

He’s reunited with ‘Bruges’ director Martin McDonagh and co-star Colin Farrell for their latest, ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’, about lifelong friends who fall out when one of them abruptly ends the friendship.

The film is kicking off its initial festival run with a world Premiere at Venice this week. The movie will then hit theaters on October 21st.

‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ is a little further away, not scheduled for release in theaters until October 4th, 2024.

  • Lady Gaga Confirms ‘Joker’ Sequel Casting

Joker’ fans, prepare to be in heaven.

There was talk back in June that Lady Gaga was in talks to star opposite Joaquin Phoenix in Todd Phillips’ sequel to his 2018 hit.

That has now moved into the “official” column, as Gaga has taken to social media with a teaser video confirming her casting.

Set to an instrumental version of the Irving Berlin-written ‘Cheek to Cheek’ (a song that Gaga herself has performed a lot, often with Tony Bennett), the video shows silhouette versions of Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck and Gaga’s so far unknown character (though there is speculation on that – see further down the page) and unites them in a virtual version of a shadow puppet dance.

Featuring the actors’ names in bold and then confirming the title as ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’, the twitter tease also mentions the release date for the film.

As discovered yesterday, the new ‘Joker’ film will head to theaters on October 4th, 2024 – five years to the day since the original. The studio will naturally be hoping for similar success at the box office and awards season.

Phillips had previously teased the new movie’s title by posting the cover for the script he wrote with ‘Joker’s Scott Silver. And the cameras should be cranking this December. No one knows what the plot is exactly yet, though Folie à Deux’ is a French reference for a medical term pertaining to a mental disorder which affects two or more people.

And this latest teaser also seems to point to more of a musical angle to the movie (which makes sense given Gaga’s casting).

Gaga, of course, is a big star these days, with an Oscar on her mantel and plenty of acclaim for ‘A Star is Born’ in particular (it’s perhaps little coincidence that Phillips co-produced that Bradley Cooper-directed movie).

And, if she does end up making a deal to appear, word is she’ll be playing iconic Joker character Harley Quinn, his psychiatrist at the mental institution known as Arkham Asylum who falls in love with him and becomes his sidekick and partner in crime.

This being Phillips’ own world, not connected to the DC Extended Universe, any potential Gaga Harley would be different from Margot Robbie’s Quinn, who has so far appeared in two ‘Suicide Squad’ movies and her own spin-off, ‘Birds of Prey’.

And it’s not like ‘Joker’ eschewed other Batman characters completely: we got a smattering of them in Phillips’ vision of Gotham, including a young Bruce Wayne and a corrupt version of his father, Thomas.

So while those eagerly anticipating more of Phoenix’s make-up-sporting troublemaker will have to wait a couple of years to see the next installment, at least we know that the movie is officially on its way.

That said, even being finished and at the post-production stage is no guarantee that it’ll hit screens via Warner Bros. these days. But given the prestige of the original, we have more hope that this DC movie will have a smoother ride to theaters.

  • Lady Gaga in Early Talks for ‘Joker’ Sequel

After co-writer/director Todd Phillips offered an update about the status of the sequel to 2018 hit ‘Joker’ last week, the latest developments to emerge about the movie are quite the follow-up.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, not only is Lady Gaga now in early talks to co-star, but the movie is shaping up to be a musical, or at least carry a solid musical element. As if people weren’t paying attention to the sequel already, that’s certainly something to make them.

Gaga, of course, is a big star these days, with an Oscar on her mantel and plenty of acclaim for ‘A Star is Born’ in particular (it’s perhaps little coincidence that Phillips co-produced that Bradley Cooper-directed movie).

The musical element is harder to pin down, but it certainly makes Gaga’s casting resonate even further. While the first ‘Joker’ movie certainly had music in it (and one iconic scene featuring Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck dancing), the idea that the sequel will be a full-blown, tune-filled affair is an intriguing one.

If you were looking to sidestep the usual cries of sequel fatigue, that’s certainly one way to go about it! Right now, it’s all up the air as Gaga still has to lock in her deal, while Phoenix is also in the midst of figuring out the financials for his return to the lead.

Co-writer Scott Silver and Phillips have been hard at work on drafts of the script, and the movie’s current working title is ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ which translates to the term for a mental disorder that affects more than one person. The ‘Joker’ sequel doesn’t have a confirmed release date yet, but there’s a chance it could be ready for screens next year. And will it be a full-blown musical? Lady Gaga might have scored a trophy for “Shallow”, but it’s Arthur Fleck who is off the deep end.

  • Margot Robbie Explains That Fantabulously Long ‘Birds of Prey’ Title

Margot Robbie Explains That Fantabulously Long ‘Birds of Prey’ Title

    Warner Bros.

Superhero movies have been taking themselves far too seriously for far too long, and the upcoming DC spinoff flick “Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)” is here to change that. And obviously, that starts with the film’s very title.

Star Margot Robbie, who’s set to reprise her “Suicide Squad” role as Harley in the new film, chatted with Jimmy Fallon on “The Tonight Show” on Monday, and revealed the thinking behind the moniker. The title is so odd, in fact, that when Robbie first unveiled it on her Instagram page last month, some fans didn’t think it was real.

Fallon dubbed it “a mouthful,” and Robbie concurred. But that was kind of the point, according to the actress.

“It’s not a very serious movie, so we thought the title should reflect that,” Robbie explained. “Like, ‘Birds of Prey’ makes it sound very serious, and [the subtitle is] kind of like Harley adding her, like, ‘Hey, don’t worry. I’m in this too.’”

Also in Harley’s titular girl gang are Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead),  Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez), and Cassandra Cain (newcomer Ella Jay Basco). Ewan McGregor plays the villain, Black Mask.

“Birds of Prey” begins filming in early 2019. The fantabulous feature is due to fly into theaters on February 7, 2020.

“Birds of Prey” is close to completing its flock.

The Harley Quinn spinoff starring Margot Robbie has found an actress to play Cassandra Cain. Variety reports the newcomer Ella Jay Basco is in talks for the last major unfilled role.

She’ll join Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary. Rosie Perez is playing Gotham City police detective Renee Montoya, with Ewan McGregor on board as the villain Black Mask.

In the DC Comics, Cassandra is the daughter of assassins who was conditioned from childhood to follow in their footsteps. She grows up to be an expert martial artist, though she is mute, illiterate, and has no social skills. She eventually becomes one of the many Batgirls in the DC universe.

In the movie, Harley Quinn, Huntress, and Black Canary team up to protect Cassandra when she comes across a diamond belonging to the Black Mask.

This is Basco’s first big role; she has appeared as a guest star on “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Veep.”

“Birds of Prey” is slated to open in theaters February 7, 2020.

  • The Joker and Harley Quinn Spinoff Project Has a Script That Sounds Very, Very Unique

    Warner Bros. Pictures

“Suicide Squad” left some fans feeling like they didn’t get enough of two popular characters, but they’re still moving toward getting their own very unique spinoff.

Screenwriters Glenn Ficarra and John Requa recently discussed the possible Joker and Harley Quinn spinoff with the U.K.’s Metro, and they’ve come up with a script that sounds promising. Apparently, it meshes together two projects you’d probably never have thought to put together before: the black comedy “Bad Santa” and the heart-wrenching TV drama “This Is Us.”

“We wrote ‘Bad Santa’ a couple of years ago,” Ficarra said, “and it was that sensibility mixed with our ‘This Is Us’ sensibility. … We were doing a relationship movie but with the sensibility of a ‘Bad Santa,’ f***ed up, mentally deranged people.”

If you’re having trouble imagining what that may turn out like, here’s what they let slip about the plot: Harley and the Joker will be having relationship problems, so Harley will kidnap Dr. Phil for help. The writers are hoping to get the real Dr. Phil to play himself.

The movie’s future, though, is still unclear. “Everybody loved the script” after they submitted it, according to Ficarra, but Requa cautioned that they don’t know when it will be made. Fans should keep in mind that there are a lot of steps between a script being turned in and a movie being released.

In the meantime, DC Comics fans can look forward to seeing more of the iconic characters. Both Joaquin Phoenix‘s “Joker” movie and Margot Robbie‘s “Birds of Prey” are in the pipeline.

  • Margot Robbie Says ‘Birds of Prey’ Will Feature Diverse Leads, New Harley Quinn Costume

    Warner Bros.

Margot Robbie has been instrumental in shepherding the upcoming DC spinoff flick “Birds of Prey” throughout its development process, and that’s going to continue in the casting of the film, too.

In an interview with Yahoo! Entertainment, Robbie offered a few behind the scenes updates on the project, which sounds like it is still in its early stages. The flick recently secured its director, Cathy Yan, who is only the second woman — and first Asian woman — to helm a DC film.

Robbie advocated for hiring Yan, and she confirmed to Yahoo! that it was also a priority for her that the film be diverse in front of the camera, too.

” … [R]eal life isn’t so one specific image,” Robbie explained to the site. “We’ve got to reflect that onscreen.”

“Birds of Prey” is focused on the female villains of the DC-verse, and as the actress previously explained to Moviefone, it will be an “R-rated girl gang film.” Though the specific members of that gang are unknown right now, Robbie’s “Suicide Squad” breakout, Harley Quinn, will be front and center — and getting a makeover.

” … [T]he costumes haven’t been designed yet, but yes, she’ll have new looks,” the actress told Yahoo! of her onscreen alter ego. “There will be new Halloween costumes out there, one day.”

    We can’t wait.

  • DC Universe Reveals New Digital Service With First Look Trailer & Series Details

DC would like to remind you how much it has to offer on the superhero/villain front (beyond the DCEU).

DC Comics/Warner Bros. have been talking up the new DC Universe digital subscription service — where fans will get to watch James Wan’s “Swamp Thing,” along with “Titans,” “Young Justice: Outsiders,” “Harley Quinn,” and “Doom Patrol.”

The DC Universe will start Beta access in August and officially launch this fall. It just shared a first look trailer and more information on the offerings:

“Watch. Read. Shop. Connect. Explore. Win. This is your universe.

Introducing DC Universe. A first-of-its-kind digital experience designed for DC fans.”

DC Entertainment chief creative officer and publisher Jim Lee shared a statement :

“DC Universe is so much more than a streaming service. It’s a welcoming place for everyone to immerse themselves in their own level of DC fandom, with the epic characters, stories, and experiences they have come to expect from DC. We are investing in and creating original, high-quality shows including the new ‘Titans’ series, and curating the most beloved nostalgic content, while at the same time elevating the comic reading experience to new heights. Nothing this robust has ever been offered to fans before.”

“Titans” premieres later this fall; DC shared a new look at Brenton Thwaites’ Robin/Dick Grayson:

“Swamp Thing” and “Doom Patrol” are slated for a 2019 release, along with new animated TV series “Harley Quinn” and the new season of “Young Justice.” (See below for more details.)

As TheWrap noted, the “nostalgic content” Jim Lee referenced includes things like the four original “Superman” movies, the original “Wonder Woman” series, the first two seasons of “Batman: The Animated Series,” and more.

Here are more details on the new shows:

“Titans” follows young heroes from across the DC Universe as they come of age and find belonging in a gritty take on the classic Teen Titans franchise. Dick Grayson and Rachel Roth, a special young girl possessed by a strange darkness, get embroiled in a conspiracy that could bring Hell on Earth. Joining them along the way are the hot-headed Starfire and loveable Beast Boy. Together they become a surrogate family and team of heroes.

“Doom Patrol” is a reimagining of one of DC’s strangest group of outcasts: Robotman, Negative Man, Elasti-Woman and Crazy Jane. Led by the mysterious Dr. Niles Caulder, they’re called into action by the ultimate hero for the digital age, Cyborg. Banding together these rejects find themselves on a mission that will take them to the weirdest and most unexpected corners of the DC Universe.

“Swamp Thing” follows Abby Arcane as she investigates what seems to be a deadly swamp-born virus in a small town in Louisiana but soon discovers that the swamp holds mystical and terrifying secrets. When unexplainable and chilling horrors emerge from the murky marsh, no one is safe.

“Harley Quinn” follows Harley’s adventures after she breaks up with the Joker and strikes out on her own in this new adult animated comedy. With the help of Poison Ivy and a ragtag crew of DC castoffs, Harley tries to earn a seat at the biggest table in villainy: the Legion of the Doom.

“Young Justice: Outsiders” features the return of the fan favorite animated series with a huge cast of DC’s most iconic young superheroes – plus brand-new characters, many of whom are just discovering their unique meta-powers and special abilities. Set against the backdrop of a rich, deep world that touches all corners of the DC Universe, the season focuses on meta–trafficking, and an intergalactic arms race for control of these super–powered youths.

At the moment, DCUniverse.com is still marked “Coming Soon,” but you can sign up on the site to help build the universe.

  • Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn Spinoff Is Going to Be ‘R-Rated’

While chatting with Margot Robbie earlier today about her neon-drenched noir “Terminal,” we had to bring up one of the projects on her plate that fans are most clamoring for — the untitled Harley Quinn spin-off.

Our first question was about how important it was to her, since Robbie will be both starring and producing the movie, to secure director Cathy Yan for the Harley Quinn spin-off.

“It was very important,” Robbie explained. “I’ve been working on this for three years now and, from the beginning, I wanted to make an R-rated girl gang film and we needed a female director.”

She then elaborated on the process. “The best director always wins, whether male or female, it’s more about who understands the character the best. But given how few opportunities female directors get, particularly on these big budget films, I thought it was our duty to put more effort into exploring female directors than male ones,” Robbie said. “Definitely not to exclude male directors, but put more effort into exploring female directors. So we looked at both male and female directors and Cathy was the best.”

Robbie said she wanted an “authentically female perspective” for the sequel, which will be written by Christina Hodson, who wrote 2018s upcoming “Bumblebee” movie. Hodson also stepped in to replace Joss Whedon on the “Batgirl” film.

We were also curious as to why this version, instead of some of the other potential spin-off ideas, gained traction over such concepts as varied as a straightforward “Suicide Squad” sequel — or one based on the “Gotham City Sirens” comic book.

As it turns out, it was the only version Robbie wanted to make.

“I pitched it to her actually,” Robbie told us. “I said, ‘I want to make a girl gang, R-rated film that Harley is a part of.’ And we started working on it from there. Meanwhile, over the course of the next few years, the studio was exploring other Harley Quinn spin-offs. But I was not a part of those versions, I was always focused on this one with Christina.”

Robbie went on: “I know that they were exploring ‘Gotham City Sirens’ with David Ayer, and I know they were exploring a Joker and Harley Quinn movie, and they were exploring doing I don’t know what else. I wasn’t a part of those. I was focusing on this. I kept presenting it to the studio until they felt it was at a point where they were ready to do it. And now we’re all in.”

While you wait for the untitled Harley Quinn spin-off, be sure to catch Robbie in the super cool “Terminal,” in theaters and on VOD Friday.
