‘Lilo & Stitch’ (2025) receives 7 out of 10 stars.

Opening in theaters on May 23rd is ‘Lilo & Stitch’ (2025), which is the latest animation-to-live-action conversion effort from Walt Disney Studios.

Directed by Dean Fleischer Camp (‘Marcel the Shell with Shoes On’), the film stars newcomer Maia Kealoha, Sydney Agudong (‘On My Block’), Courtney B. Vance (‘Uncorked’), Billy Magnussen (‘Game Night’), Zach Galifianakis (‘The Hangover’) and Chris Sanders (who directed the original ‘Lilo & Stitch’) as the voice of Stitch.

Did you know the phrase “Ohana” means “family”? If you watch the new, live-action/CG version of ‘Lilo & Stitch,’ you are certainly not going to forget it, as it’s mentioned approximately 27 times. Yet, that’s the core concept of the 2002 original, so it was always going to show up here.

The new take on the cuddly blue alien –– who also happens to be a super-smart killing machine –– has a lot to live up to. And it must also answer the key question of whether it deserves to exist in the first place, a hurdle that some of Disney’s more recent attempts to mine its animated back catalogue for new hybrid releases have failed to cross.

    Story and Direction

Building on the original movie’s script –– which, let’s not forget, was written by Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois (who would also go on to the ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ franchise for DreamWorks), the new movie has a screenplay by Chris Kekaniokalani Bright and Mike Van Waes, who look to inject some more authentically Hawaiian flavor into this offering.

Of course, there’s only room for so much, and it can sometimes feel like lip service when the primary focus is the chaotic antics of the alien critter and the sibling bond between the other two main characters.

It all races along amiably enough, Stitch proving to be his usual destructive/sweet self and the women brought to life well.

A few pacing issues rear their head –– there are some transitions that feel abrupt here and there, which might be an issue of translation from the swifter speed of animated movies. But on the whole, this is a sweet, family-friendly caper that largely does justice to the original.

As director, Dean Fleischer Camp previously brought us the sweet, animated miracle ‘Marcel the Shell with Shoes On,’ and does what he can not to get lost within the Disney corporate moviemaking behemoth. There are some fun touches here and there, and he certainly takes full advantage of the beautiful Hawaiian scenery, while keeping the movie moving along.

If there are issues, it’s that the live-action setting is perhaps not the best for the zanier moments of the story, which sometimes fit uneasily into the reality that the movie is looking to build for itself.

    Cast and Performances

Any ‘Lilo & Stitch’ lives and dies on its three main characters, and the new movie gets all three pretty much right.

Maia Kealoha is an appealing, charming Lilo, delivering the right balance of youthful exuberance and sweetness. Her bond with Stitch (voiced to uproarious effect once more by Chris Sanders, who has provided the vocals for the character since co-writing and directing the original) works, and the sisterly dynamic with Sydney Agudong’s Nani.

Agudong does solid work as the older sister of the pair, struggling to keep her own life together in the wake of their parents’ death while also taking care of her wayward younger sibling. She’s got the right blend of emotion and frustration, all the while bringing some grounded humanity to the story.

(L to R) Billy Magnussen as Pleakley and Zach Galifianakis as Jumba in Disney’s live-action ‘Lilo & Stitch’. Photo by Zach Dougan. © 2025 Disney Enterprises Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Less grounded –– by design –– are Billy Magnussen’s Pleakley (the alien researcher and Earth specialist dispatched to help find Stitch on the planet) and Zach Galifianakis’ Jumba (the scientist who created Stitch, AKA Experiment 626).

Magnussen is definitely the highlight of the pair, imbuing Pleakley with appropriately silly energy, and throwing himself into the role. Galifianakis is fine as Jumba, though he’s more a stock comedy villain.

‘Ted Lasso’s Hannah Waddingham, meanwhile, shines in a supporting role as the imperious Grand Councilwoman, an alien character with a nice line in withering sarcasm.

Finally, the movie does look to cram in two main cameos from the 2002 take –– Tia Carrere (who voiced Nani in that movie) and Jason Scott Lee (the original David) are a mixed blessing.

Carrere is good value as Mrs. Kekoa, the social worker whose inspections put orphan sisters Nani and Lilo at risk of being separate, bringing a blend of gentle comedy and real empathy to the role.

Lee, on the other hand, is largely wasted in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it role as a restaurant owner.

The new ‘Lilo & Stitch’ seems unlikely to replace the animated take in the hearts of those who grew up on it, but for the younger target audience, this will surely hit the mark.

Stitch remains a funny and frantic central character, and he’s still the core of the story here. The movie around him doesn’t always work as well, but it’s certainly not an embarrassment from Disney.

  • Jason Sudeikis Returning for ‘Ted Lasso’ Season 4

Jason Sudeikis in 'Ted Lasso,' now streaming on Apple TV+.
Jason Sudeikis in ‘Ted Lasso,’ now streaming on Apple TV+.

    Preview:

    • Apple TV+ is officially bringing ‘Ted Lasso’ back.
    • Jason Sudeikis returns to star and produce.
    • Juno Temple is also making a deal to come back.

    It’s time to believe again.

Last August, we got the surprise news that despite the third season seemingly wrapping the story up, Apple TV+ and Warner Bros. TV were exploring opportunities for a new season of hit soccer comedy drama series ‘Ted Lasso.’

    0jH1sGsYiD18Cl48OTN883

At that time, the only people likely to return were Hannah Waddingham (team owner Rebecca Walton), Brett Goldstein (growling veteran player-turned-assistant-coach Roy Kent) and Jeremy Swift (Director of Football Operations Leslie Higgins) –– who are all British actors contracted via the U.K’.s Equity representation organization.

But for the new season to have any real hope of success, the streaming service needed to lock in Jason Sudeikis, who both played the titular soccer coach and had a hand in the writers’ room.

Now, via an official announcement from Apple TV+ comes news that Sudeikis is indeed back,

Here’s Sudeikis’ comment on his return:

“As we all continue to live in a world where so many factors have conditioned us to ‘look before we leap. In season four, the folks at AFC Richmond learn to LEAP BEFORE THEY LOOK, discovering that wherever they land, it’s exactly where they’re meant to be.”

Matt Cherniss head of programming for Apple TV+ seems happy to have the show back:

‘Ted Lasso’ has been nothing short of a juggernaut, inspiring a passionate fanbase all over the world, and delivering endless joy and laughter, all while spreading kindness, compassion and unwavering belief, Everyone at Apple is thrilled to be continuing our collaboration with Jason and the brilliant creative minds behind this show.”

And according to Deadline’s sources, Juno Temple, who played Keeley Jones, who evolved from a player’s girlfriend to the girl boss of her own PR agency, is in negotiations to also return, though she’s believed to have a scheduling conflict that is being worked out as the show plans a July shoot in Kansas and the U.K.

What was the story of ‘Ted Lasso’?

(L to R) Brett Goldstein, Jason Sudeikis and Brendan Hunt in 'Ted Lasso,' now streaming on Apple TV+.
(L to R) Brett Goldstein, Jason Sudeikis and Brendan Hunt in ‘Ted Lasso,’ now streaming on Apple TV+.

‘Ted Lasso’ was originally created by Sudeikis, Brendan Hunt (who played Coach Beard), Joe Kelly and Bill Lawrence, and were based on based on a series of NBC Sports commercials about Lasso, an NFL coach drafted into manage a failing British soccer team.

Sudeikis, Kelly and Hunt, along with a writing team, expanded the story out to show Ted being drafted in to coach the lackluster AFC Richmond, though he was originally hired by Rebecca in the hopes that the idea would fail, dooming the team she inherited from arrogant ex-husband Rupert Mannion (Anthony Head).

Yet Ted’s homespun wisdom and cheery demeanor wins over more than just the management –– he starts to inspire more confidence in the players. And if Richmond’s fortunes don’t massively change, they do shift.

The show was a slow-burn hit that, in its first season at least, was a much-needed burst of positivity, since it launched at the height of the pandemic in August 2020. The comedy became an instant global hit and Apple’s signature and — until recently — most-watched original series ever.

In addition to its immense popularity and marquee pop culture status, ‘Ted Lasso’ earned 13 Emmy Awards during its original three-season run, including two back-to-back Outstanding Comedy Series trophies and acting wins for Sudeikis, Goldstein and Waddingham.

What will happen in Season 4?

Jason Sudeikis in 'Ted Lasso,' now streaming on Apple TV+.
Jason Sudeikis in ‘Ted Lasso,’ now streaming on Apple TV+.

In the Season 3 finale, Keeley and Rebecca impulsively, partnered on a potential new venture, AFC Richmond women’s team. That was seen as possibly kicking off the next chapter in the Ted Lasso franchise, and it would certainly qualify as a leap of faith.

The last time we saw Ted at the end of the Season 3 finale, he was coaching his son on a soccer field in Kansas. The handful of Kansas-set scenes in the first three seasons were actually filmed in California, so this would be the first time Kansas native Sudeikis would be heading to the Sunflower State for the show.

With the majority of the returning cast part of the management/office coaching team as portrayed on the show, it seems certain that the focus will move to a new group of players (though we can imagine the series’ producers will look to include cameos from audience favorites from past seasons).

Who is making the new season?

For Season 4, veteran comedy showrunner and Emmy Award winner Jack Burditt (who has worked on the likes of ‘Nobody Wants This,’ ‘Modern Family’ and ‘30 Rock’) is joining the show as executive producer under his new overall deal with Apple TV+.

Sudeikis will once again be an executive producer alongside Hunt (who has no acting deal yet but seems sure to also return in front of the camera as Coach Beard), Joe Kelly, Jane Becker, Jamie Lee and Bill Wrubel.

Goldstein, in addition to playing swear-happy player-turned-coach Roy Kent will again pull double duty as writer and executive producer alongside Leanne Bowen. Sara Walker and Phoebe Walsh, who are writers and producers for season four, while Julia Lindon and Dylan Marron are new additions to the writing room.

And finally, though he already has several projects in the works (including the filming third season of ‘Shrinking,’ a second run of ‘Bad Monkey,’ an untitled new show with Steve Carell and a potential reboot of his hit network medical sitcom ‘Scrubs’, Lawrence executive produces via his Doozer Productions, in association with Warner Bros.

When will ‘Ted Lasso’ Season 4 be on screens?

Apple TV+’s big announcement about the return of Ted and co. doesn’t mention a release date yet, but given that potential July shoot, we’d be surprised if it didn’t head to screens next year.

Jason Sudeikis in ‘Ted Lasso’ season 2, now streaming on Apple TV+.

    Preview:

    • Apple TV+’s ‘Ted Lasso’ may return for a fourth season.
    • The production company behind the show has picked up options on several actors.
    • Negotiations will be needed with the likes of creator/star Jason Sudeikis to return.

After a slow start in August of 2020, the (initially) sweet-natured ‘Ted Lasso’ took pop culture by storm as it became reliable pandemic viewing for those in need of a shot of kindness and uplift.

It ran for two further seasons, with the most recent wrapping up last year, seemingly ending the show for the foreseeable future.

Turns out, the foreseeable future might not be as long as we all thought. According to Deadline, there is chatter about a potential fourth season.

(L to R) Brendan Hunt, Jason Sudeikis and Brett Goldstein in ‘Ted Lasso’ season 2, now streaming on Apple TV+.

Nothing is concrete as yet, but there are some encouraging signs.

Warner Bros. TV, which financed and produced the series created by Jason Sudeikis (who also starred), Brendan Hunt (who played Coach Beard), Joe Kelly and Bill Lawrence, based on a series of NBC Sports commercials about Lasso, an NFL coach drafted into manage a failing British soccer team, has picked up three actors’ options.

The three –– Hannah Waddingham (team owner Rebecca Walton), Brett Goldstein (growling veteran player-turned-assistant-coach Roy Kent) and Jeremy Swift (Director of Football Operations Leslie Higgins) –– are all British actors who were contracted via the U.K’.s Equity.

And lest you think this is leading the one of the proposed spin-off shows, Deadline also mentions that WBTV is exploring negotiations with SAG-AFTRA members Sudeikis, Hunt and Juno Temple (who played Keeley Jones).

And that’s not all –– though an official greenlight is still far away at this point, there are hints that a writers’ room for a potential new batch of episodes that, if things work out, could be shooting next year.

(L to R) Nick Mohammed, Brendan Hunt, Jason Sudeikis and Brett Goldstein in ‘Ted Lasso’ season two, now streaming on Apple TV+.

So far, the likes of Phil Dunster (cocky star player Jamie Tart) seems unlikely to come back, since he’s already got a couple of shows on the go: Prime Video’s ‘The Devil’s Hour’ and Apple’s own ‘Surface’.

And while the cast have generally said they’d be thrilled to return to the roles, they’re all very popular in the wake of the series’ ending, so schedules may have to be juggled.

Plus, it’ll all depend on whether Sudeikis, who has always been the lynchpin for this one, actually has a good idea for a new run of episodes. Whether the show continues without him or not is something we’ll have to wait and find out.

    Should ‘Ted Lasso’ return?

That’s a much bigger question. Even by Season 2, there were concerns that the dial was being shifted from the cuddly comedy side to weightier dramatic demands, and opinions were further mixed on Season 3.

Still, it ended on a relative high, so any future season will be judged against it, and that’s not something anyone should go into blindly. Do we want more ‘Ted Lasso’? Yes, but not if it turns into ‘Led Tasso’ (the “evil” alter ego Ted has sometimes used in coaching).

The Fall Guy’ is not just a rom-com between a stuntman and a director. It is also a love letter to the stunt community. As a former stunt performer, director David Leitch (‘Deadpool 2’, ‘Atomic Blonde’) paid extra attention to the action sequences and fight scenes in the film, ensuring they’re grand, authentic, and most importantly, highlight the men and women who perform them.

The film is (loosely) based on the 80’s TV show of the same name, starring Lee Majors. In the show, Majors’ Colt Seavers works as a bounty hunter on the side, where his stunt skills come in quite handy in apprehending the wanted. In Leitch’s film, Colt is played by Ryan Gosling, who is tasked to find the missing action star Tom Ryder. All the while he is trying to win back the love of his life – Jody Moreno, played by Emily Blunt.

Joining Gosling and Blunt are Aaron Taylor-Johnson (‘Bullet Train’), Hannah Waddingham (‘Ted Lasso’), Winston Duke (‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’), and Stephanie Hsu (‘Joy Ride’).

With former stunt performer David Leitch at the helm of a film about a stuntman, one can expect the movie to showcase some of the most daring stunt sequences. Not only is ‘The Fall Guy’ filled with spectacular action, but it broke the record for most cannon rolls in a film. The record was previously held by ‘Casino Royale,’ where James Bond’s Aston Martin rolled seven times as it swerved off the road.

Performed by stunt driver Logan Holiday, the cannon roll sequence in ‘The Fall Guy’ broke records when it rolled eight and a half times, setting the new record for most cannon rolls performed in a film.

Opening in theaters on May 24th is the new animated family film ‘The Garfield Movie,’ which stars Chris Pratt (‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’) as the voice of the title character and was directed by Mark Dindal (‘Chicken Little’).

The movie also features the voice work of Samuel L. Jackson (‘Secret Invasion’), Hannah Waddingham (‘The Fall Guy’), Ving Rhames (‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning’), Nicholas Hoult (‘X-Men: First Class’), and Harvey Guillén (‘What We Do in the Shadows‘) as Odie.

‘The Garfield Movie’ is a surprisingly entertaining and funny family animated film that explores the character’s previously unknown family history and origin story. Samuel L. Jackson’s Vic, Garfield’s father, is a strong addition to the franchise’s group of characters and is a great foil for our beloved feline. Director Mark Dindal packs a lot of humor and heart into the film, which is basically a heist movie that also explores family and friendship.

    Script and Direction

Vic and Garfield in 'The Garfield Movie.'

The movie begins by reintroducing us to the lazy but lovable lasagna eating cat, Garfield (voiced by Chris Pratt). We are also quickly introduced to his owner Jon Arbuckle (voiced by Nicholas Hoult) and his canine buddy Odie (voiced by Harvey Guillén) and learn how they all first met when Garfield was abandoned by his father, Vic (voiced by Samuel L. Jackson).

Vic soon reappears in Garfield’s life and involves him and Odie in a heist plot to pay back a villainous Persian Cat named Jinx (voiced by Hannah Waddingham), who Vic is indebted to. Along the way, they meet a bull named Otto (voiced by Ving Rhames), who has been separated from his true love, and the father and son attempt to help him while trying to outsmart Jinx and ruin her evil plans. Eventually, Vic and his son are brought closer together by the events, while Garfield and Odie desperately try to return to their happy home with Jon.

Director by Mark Dindal delivers a fun and heartwarming film that not only reveals Garfield’s origin, but also explores the relationship between fathers and sons in a very interesting way. Focusing on Garfield’s personal history was a wise choice, as it has not been previously explored in any other incarnation of the character. The movie is also an entertaining heist film and builds on the exploration of the characters throughout.

While the animation is not anything too groundbreaking, it does work well for the material and has a similar look to the comic strip cartoons where the character originated. The movie is clearly designed for a younger audience as some of the jokes are rather immature, but they still fit the character and there is enough nostalgia, action and emotion for an older audience.

Following in the footsteps of Lorenzo Music (‘Here Comes Garfield’) and Bill Murray (‘Garfield’), Chris Pratt channels his ‘Parks and Recreation’ character to deliver a lazy, sarcastic performance worthy of the cartoon cat. Pratt’s humor is also on display, and he has great chemistry with Samuel L. Jackson. In fact, the exploration of Garfield and Vic’s estranged relationship is at the heart of the movie, and Pratt delivers the emotion when needed.

    The Supporting Cast

Of the supporting voice cast, Samuel L. Jackson is the standout as Garfield’s estranged father, Vic. Jackson’s famous cool voice lends itself perfectly to the character, and he works well with Pratt’s laidback performance. Also, a standout is Hannah Waddingham as the voice of Jinx, and the actresses own offscreen persona plays well into the over-the-top villainous feline character. Ving Rhames is also a great addition to the voice cast as his unique deep voice lends itself to Otto the bull quite well.

Nicholas Hoult and Harvey Guillén are fine as Jon and Odie, respectively, but are at times shortchanged by the script, particularly Hoult. Also worth mentioning is a cameo by the very recognizable voice of Snoop Dogg, who plays a one-eyed cat.

    Final Thoughts

While nostalgia for the beloved cartoon cat carries the film far, it’s his origin story, the heist plot, and exploring the relationship between fathers and sons that makes the new movie worth watching. The movie’s humor is mostly skewed towards kids, and some juvenile jokes may not land with an older audience, but adults will be able to latch on to some of the larger ideas in the movie and should find it enjoyable anyways. Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Chris Pratt about his work on ‘The Garfield Movie’, what fans can expect from the film, his approach to voicing the iconic cat, and telling Garfield’s origin story.

Moviefone: To begin with, what would you say to audience members sitting down in a theater to prepare them for the theatrical experience they are about to have?

Chris Pratt: Oh, they’re already in the theater? I’d say turn your phones off, get your popcorn, sit back and relax. You thought you knew Garfield? You didn’t know nothing yet. That’s what I would say, something like that. But to those who are thinking of going to the movies, I would say get your tickets now, because they’re going to sell out. May 24th don’t miss it!

MF: You are following in the footsteps of Lorenzo Music and Bill Murray, who have both voiced this role. What does it mean to you personally to get a chance to put your own spin on an iconic character like Garfield?

CP: Man, I’m grateful. This is an entire collaborative effort by a great production team and a wonderful director who had been working on this for years before I jumped on board. So really, I was just honored and blessed that they thought the voice of the guy from ‘Parks and Rec’ was the voice of this cat. That’s what they told me. He said, “I’ve been working on this for years. I keep hearing your voice coming out of this cat in my head. That’s what I want. You’ve got a natural, lazy, sarcastic tone to your voice. I want that voice.” I was like, “Well, that’s cool. Because I know the guy who has that voice, and he could do it for you. I’ve been working on this voice for my whole life, apparently.” So, it was nice. In a way it kind of took the pressure off because I knew what they wanted, and only I could give it to them. It was just something organic and natural, my own breath, my own voice, my own spirit for this character. I feel blessed.

MF: Can you talk about your approach to the character? Did you relate to him right away?

CP: Yeah, early on. There are elements in my life that make me feel like Garfield now. I’m very pampered. I’m a Hollywood guy. There was a certain affectation in the voice which was kind of closer to what a person sounds like when they’re about to yawn, and I just thought that was kind of something to work in. That’s where I was feeling like a lot of times the voice would come from, and just trusting the director and knowing that we had a great script. Once the action took over, it was about a character that was on an adventure. So, it’s like the sleepiness and the laziness that really works for the character who’s being pampered and who’s living a lazy life. But when you’re on the run and you’re in a heist movie, you must shift gears and become a character on an action adventure. Because suddenly, this cat that’s typically sarcastic and a little bit of a biting, comedic laziness, can’t be sarcastic and lazy, he must be on the road. Once you get clipping along, that’s what the movie becomes.

MF: Finally, we got to see Garfield’s origin story in this movie, and meet his father, Vic. Can you talk a little bit about that and Garfield’s relationship with Vic?

CP: It’s a great relationship. Samuel L. Jackson voices Vic beautifully. Vic is this streetwise, scruffy, outdoor cat, and he’s kind of on the run. Garfield is your world-famous lasagna-loving, Monday-hating, sarcastic, indoor-pampered pet. Vic takes him on this epic outdoor adventure along with Odie, and they basically are enlisted in this really high-stakes and super-funny heist scenario. So that’s the movie. That’s the relationship. The relationship is one of a father who his son believed abandoned him in an alley one day, and you see that from the trailer. You see that in the opening scene of the movie that he’s got an issue with this guy Vic who claims to be his dad, because his dad left him in an alley. So, healing that relationship and seeing the father try to teach this cat some valuable tricks of the trade, some hard knocks lessons on how to be an outdoor cat, is some of the fun in the movie.

  • Movie Review: ‘The Fall Guy’

Ryan Gosling is Colt Seavers and Emily Blunt is Judy Moreno in 'The Fall Guy,' directed by David Leitch.
(L to R) Ryan Gosling is Colt Seavers and Emily Blunt is Judy Moreno in ‘The Fall Guy,’ directed by David Leitch.

Opening in theaters on May 3rd is ‘The Fall Guy,’ starring Ryan Gosling, Emily Blunt, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Hannah Waddingham, Winston Duke, Stephanie Hsu, and Teresa Palmer.

    Initial Thoughts

The best part about ‘The Fall Guy’ is its clear affection and loving respect for stuntpeople and the incredibly dangerous work they do to make movies as exciting as possible. Some of the film’s many – almost too many – action sequences are designed just for this. It’s too bad, then, that the rest of the film is hampered by a sloppy script and halting pacing that the undeniable charm of Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt can only do so much to smooth over. It’s all in the execution, and ‘The Fall Guy’ never commits to what kind of film it wants to be.

    Story and Direction

Director David Leitch and Ryan Gosling (as Colt Seavers) on the set of 'The Fall Guy.'
(L to R) Director David Leitch and Ryan Gosling (as Colt Seavers) on the set of ‘The Fall Guy.’

‘The Fall Guy’ is based loosely – very loosely – on the hit 1980s TV series starring Lee Majors as a stuntman who uses his skills to moonlight as a bounty hunter. Aside from the title and the main character’s name, however, nothing else remains of the series in this film from stuntman-turned-director David Leitch (‘John Wick,’ ‘Deadpool 2,’ ‘Bullet Train’). In this version, Colt Seavers (Ryan Gosling) is quite satisfied with just being a stuntman – even if the star he’s been doubling for six years, the insecure and self-obsessed Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), earns all the glory for Seavers’ risky, often awe-inspiring stunts.

All that comes crashing down, however, when Colt suffers a severe injury on the set that takes him out of commission for a year, reduces him to working as a valet, and sends him into a deep depression. It also estranges him from his girlfriend, Jody Moreno (Emily Blunt), an aspiring director who in the interim lands her feature directorial debut – a sci-fi blockbuster starring none other than Ryder.

But then Colt gets a call out of the blue from the movie’s producer, Gail (Hannah Waddingham), who insists that Colt fly down to Australia to perform stunts on the film. Fearful of getting back on that horse, so to speak, Colt nevertheless heads down to the set in the hope that he can pick up his career and rekindle the spark with Jody. But when it turns out that Ryder has gone missing from the shoot, Colt is tasked with finding him – and discovers that Ryder’s disappearance may be part of a much more sinister plot than most Hollywood thrillers.

There’s no question that Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt both have charisma and screen presence to spare, and their verbal jousting and fast-paced repartee often provides enough entertainment to just get by when ‘The Fall Guy’ lags in the pacing department. There’s also no question that David Leitch loves the profession he came up in, and the movie goes to great lengths to show just how stuntpeople do their jobs – you may come away from the movie with a newfound respect for the craft (and an understanding of why stuntpeople really do deserve to get their own Oscar category).

But the movie itself is never quite sure what it wants to be. Is it a rom-com? A movie industry satire? An action thriller? It tries to be all three, but the script by Drew Pearce (‘Hotel Artemis’) never leans fully into any of those genres, creating a tonal and narrative hodgepodge that doesn’t quite come together as a cohesive whole or has much of anything to say. The tonal shifts give ‘The Fall Guy’ a herky-jerky feel, with some scenes coming to a standstill while the action sequences are frantic if exceptionally well-staged (although one highly destructive chase through the streets of Sydney has one wondering, even in the reality of the film, why not a single cop shows up).

Of the narrative’s three threads, the mystery involving Ryder’s disappearance is the weakest and most easily dispensable: it comes across as merely a means to create some action scenes. The romance probably plays the strongest, thanks to Gosling and Blunt’s chemistry, but even aspects of that are contrived (it’s kind of murky why the relationship ended in the first place). As for the film’s satirical aspects, they jump in and out of the story, fighting for space with Leitch’s yearning to show the below-the-line folks in the best possible light.

    No Stunt Casting Here

Anyone who watched the Oscars could see that Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt had comic chemistry together as presenters, and that connection is evident in ‘The Fall Guy’ as well. The two leads are the strongest aspect of the movie. Gosling’s comedic chops are on full display again, and he can’t help but be endearing and watchable even if he is playing a variation on the lovable but dim persona we’ve seen in ‘Barbie’ and ‘The Nice Guys.’ His Colt Seavers can barely articulate himself in front of Blunt’s Jody as the story begins, locked in his own sense of failure, but his character does evolve by the climax.

Like Gosling, Blunt is always a striking, strong presence on screen, and her Jody is someone who lets her own ambitions – her heartfelt desire to become a director – get in the way of real life to a degree. One of the best aspects of the movie is the way in which Jody and Colt initially communicate through the action they’re staging on the set; as she sets him on fire over and over again, among other things, they keep talking about how to fix the movie’s third act, when clearly they’re discussing what happened to their own broken relationship. Moments like that are clever indicators of the movie’s better intentions.

The most hilarious supporting character is Taylor-Johnson’s Tom Ryder, who also represents the film’s most satirical aspects (we have to wonder which major real-life A-lister this narcissistic, petty, spoiled man-child was patterned after). His complete insecurity in the face of Colt’s immense physical talents, his inclination to believe that his delivery of even the most brainless rallying-cry speech to a crowd of extras is some sort of Shakespearean monologue, and the post-it notes that cover his apartment – constant little reminders to himself that often contradict each other – are spot-on, and Taylor-Johnson plays him at a slight remove, as if the Ryder persona is just another role for this rather small person.

The rest of the cast are terrific in smaller roles, even if many of them don’t get much to do. Hannah Waddingham (‘Ted Lasso’) fares best as Gail, the producer who knows exactly what to say to everyone and how to manipulate them to get what she wants, while Winston Duke (M’Baku from the ‘Black Panther’ movies) is a welcome wingman who we’d like to see more of. Stephanie Hsu (‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’) and Teresa Palmer (‘A Discovery of Witches’) also make good impressions even if they largely disappear from the second half of the film.

    Final Thoughts

Ryan Gosling is Colt Seavers in 'The Fall Guy,' directed by David Leitch.
Ryan Gosling is Colt Seavers in ‘The Fall Guy,’ directed by David Leitch.

‘The Fall Guy’ has crowd-pleaser written all over it: a couple of big, attractive leads in a zany rom-com scenario, a mystery of sorts at its center, and a parade of “watch this one” action setpieces serving as its spine. Some of its elements get their chance to shine, but only intermittently, and not enough to make ‘The Fall Guy’ the fully satisfying popcorn picture it’s clearly engineered to be.

Luckily, Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt have enough sheer star power to keep the movie from becoming the kind of empty tentpole that it pokes fun at (with ‘Metalstorm,’ the ‘Dune’ knockoff movie inside the movie), and if David Leitch and Drew Pearce found a more seamless way to blend their romance with a bit more satirical zing, we’d be rooting for them all the way.

‘The Fall Guy’ receives 6 out of 10 stars.

  • Teaser for ‘Ted Lasso’ Season 3

    MC5RJQm0

An early hit of the pandemic era, Apple TV+ comedy ‘Ted Lasso’ has since gone on to become an awards-grabbing sensation, including history-making back-to-back Best Comedy Emmys for its first season.

With the second season ending way back in October 2021, fans have naturally been eager to learn when it’ll return. Apple has now released a teaser for the third season, confirming that it’ll kick off on March 15th.

Nick Mohammed, Brendan Hunt, Jason Sudeikis and Brett Goldstein in 'Ted Lasso' season two, now streaming on Apple TV+.
(L to R) Nick Mohammed, Brendan Hunt, Jason Sudeikis and Brett Goldstein in ‘Ted Lasso’ season two, now streaming on Apple TV+.

What’s the story of Ted Lasso?

‘Ted Lasso’, which stars Jason Sudeikis, Brendan Hunt, Brett Goldstein and Hannah Waddingham, follows Sudeikis’ title character, an American football coach hired to manage a British soccer team—despite having no experience. But what he lacks in knowledge, he makes up for with optimism, underdog determination… and biscuits (by which they mean cookies).

The show has demonstrated an admirable commitment to balancing comedy and drama; despite Ted’s perennially sunny disposition, he’s also dealing with anxiety issues and faces problems from within and without the team. From the looks of the official synopsis, that’s set to continue in the new season.

In the 12-episode third season of ‘Ted Lasso’, the newly promoted AFC Richmond faces ridicule as media predictions widely peg them as last in the Premier League and Nate (Nick Mohammed), now hailed as the “wonder kid,” has gone to work for Rupert (Anthony Head) at West Ham United. In the wake of Nate’s contentious departure from Richmond, Roy Kent (Goldstein) steps up as assistant coach, alongside Coach Beard (Hunt).

Meanwhile, while Ted deals with pressures at work, he continues to wrestle with his own personal issues back home, Rebecca (Waddingham) is focused on defeating Rupert and Keeley (Juno Temple) navigates being the boss of her own PR agency. Things seem to be falling apart both on and off the pitch, but Team Lasso is set to give it their best shot anyway.

Who else is involved in ‘Ted Lasso’?

Ted Lasso was co-created by Sudeikis, Joe Kelly, Hunt and TV sitcom veteran Bill Lawrence (who brought the world shows such as ‘Spin City’ and ‘Scrubs’), based on the commercials that Sudeikis and Hunt worked on for NBC’s Premier League soccer coverage in 2013.

The cast also includes Jeremy Swift, Phil Dunster, Toheeb Jimoh, Cristo Fernandez, Kola Bokinni, Billy Harris and James Lance.

In addition to it multiple Emmy wins, it has also snagged SAG Awards and Critics Choice Awards.

And while Sudeikis and co have remained quiet on whether it’ll continue after Season 3, all signs are pointing to the creators planning three seasons and stopping the show while it is still hugely popular.

  • Winston Duke and Hannah Waddingham Join ‘The Fall Guy’

Winston Duke as M'Baku in 2018's 'Black Panther.'
Winston Duke as M’Baku in 2018’s ‘Black Panther.’

They may come from very different screen worlds – Winston Duke is currently best known for playing M’Baku in Marvel’s ‘Black Panther’ (and is a winning part of sequel ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ which just hit theaters), while British theatre actor Hannah Waddingham broke big with TV’s ‘Ted Lasso’ – but the pair of performers are about to unite on ‘The Fall Guy’.

Stuntman-turned-expert action director David Leitch (‘Bullet Train’, ‘Deadpool 2‘) is behind the camera for the new movie, with Ryan Gosling, Emily Blunt, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Stephanie Hsu in front of it.

And the concept itself was born from TV series.

Originally created by prolific TV producer Glen A. Larson (whose small screen factory also cranked out shows such as ‘Buck Rogers’, ‘Battlestar Galactica’ and ‘Knight Rider’), ‘The Fall Guy’ ran between 1981 and 1986, and starred Lee Majors as Colt Seavers.

When his movie work starts to dry up, Seavers pivots to become a bounty hunter, using all the know-how he’s acquired to craft film action to track down and defeat swindlers, thieves, bikers, conmen, fugitives, and corrupt officials using his fists and his vehicle skills.

Majors starred alongside Douglas Barr and Heather Thomas as Colt’s colleagues Howie Munson and Jody Banks, who helped him out on his missions. Though the show was often a giant slab of ‘80s cheese TV, the concept clearly has legs, with at least two movies going through development

Word of Leitch and Gosling’s take first surfaced in 2020, then referred to as ‘Unknown Stuntman Movie’ and backing via Universal.

When Taylor-Johnson was cast, we got fresh information as to the storyline for this one, which looks to be largely jettisoning the side-hustle part of the original show.

Gosling is playing the battered and past-his-prime stuntman who finds himself back on a movie with a star he worked with long ago and who replaced him. The problem, however, is that the star is now missing…

Taylor-Johnson will be the movie star that Gosling is doubling, while Blunt is a prosthetic makeup artist that has a romantic past with our hero. Hsu, on screen this year in ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ will be a no-doubt harried assistant to Taylor-Johnson’s character.

Duke is on board to play the best friend of Gosling’s character, while Waddingham will bring all of her comic and dramatic chops to the role of the movie’s producer, likely none too happy that her production is going off the rails.

Given Leitch’s experience (and Gosling’s past playing stuntmen in ‘Drive’ and ‘The Place Beyond The Pines’), we’d expect a funny, action-packed movie.

With a script from ‘Iron Man 3’s Drew Pearce and cameras rolling in Australia, ‘The Fall Guy’ is taking aim at a March 1st, 2024, release.
