  • ‘Top of the Lake: China Girl’ Trailer Unites Elisabeth Moss, Nicole Kidman & Gwendoline Christie

Robin Griffin (Elisabeth Moss) and Miranda Hilmarson (Gwendoline Christie) - Top of the Lake _ Season 2 - Photo Credit: See-Saw Films (TOTL2) Holdings Pty Ltd/SundanceTVFinally, Peggy Olson and Brienne of Tarth are in the same TV series!

The second season of “Top of the Lake” has a dream team cast, and a troubling new trailer. In “Top of the Lake: China Girl,” Elisabeth Moss returns to her Golden Globe-winning role, this time joined by Nicole Kidman (and her amazing new hair) and “Game of Thrones” star Gwendoline Christie.

    Here’s the synopsis from SundanceTV:

“Top of the Lake: China Girl’ is a crime mystery story that finds Detective Robin Griffin (Elisabeth Moss) recently returned to Sydney and trying to rebuild her life. When the body of an Asian girl washes up on Bondi Beach, there appears little hope of finding the killer, until Robin realizes ‘China Girl’ didn’t die alone. Robin looks to the investigation to restore herself, but her problems are personal. Haunted by a daughter given up at birth, Robin desperately wants to find her, yet dreads revealing the truth of her conception. But her search to discover ‘China Girl’s’ identity will take her into the city’s darkest recesses and closer than she could have imagined to the secrets of her own heart.”

Here’s the trailer:Based on the trailer, it looks like Kidman plays the adopted mother of Robin’s biological child, who ends up wrapped up in the greater mystery.

“Top of the Lake: China Girl” — which also stars David Dencik, Alice Englert, and Ewen Leslie — premieres this month at the Cannes Film Festival. It will then air on SundanceTV in the U.S. in September. New episodes will stream on Hulu the day after they air. In the meantime, “Mad Men” alum Moss can now be seen as another badass woman fighting the system in Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale.”

  • ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 7: Two Early Actor Sightings Suggest Good News

Two “Game of Thrones” stars whose separate storylines were left a bit up-in-the-air after Season 6 were recently spotted heading to the HBO show’s filming headquarters. Yeah, they could’ve been going to Belfast, Northern Ireland for other reasons, but that’s less likely than some pre-production work before Season 7 filming starts later this summer. Get hype!

As you know, filming is starting later this year, because winter is lame. Watchers on the Wall previously shared a casting notice for filming in September, which is still a while from now, but they said pre-prep work should be starting right around now, including things like costume fittings. So, with that in mind, they passed along the exciting news that both actors Iain Glen (Jorah Mormont) and Gwendoline Christie (Brienne of Tarth) were seen heading to Belfast, potentially for filming. That at least hints to seeing Jorah and Brienne early in Season 7.Brienne was last seen rowing away from Riverrun, along with Pod. Jorah was last seen being told to go find a cure for his greyscale. No pressure, but Daenerys Targaryen commanded it — she wants his help to rule the Seven Kingdoms, but he’s on his own to find that cure.

Perhaps we’ll follow his cure journey early in Season 7? Total guess. No proof. Just hope. ‘Cause Jorah is a hero, and the entire Mormont family is boss.

    Here are the fan sightings:

Other actors will probably be spotted heading to Belfast pretty soon. Remember last year when poor Kit Harington was stalked to Belfast, and everywhere else, for clues on Jon Snow’s fate? Good times.

  • ‘Game of Thrones’ Stars Reveal Deleted Brienne-Tormund Scenes

How dare “Game of Thrones” defy the laws of gods and men and cut Tormienne footage? Put every minute on the Season 6 DVD or someone will be flayed!

As we approach Season 6, Episode 6, Brienne appears to be on her way to Riverrun, dispatched by Sansa to meet with Brynden Tully, aka the Blackfish. So Brienne may not even get more time with Tormund Giantsbane. He’ll be crushed! They’ve only had maybe three or four glances between them (and she’s never been comfortable with any of them), but fans immediately started shipping them — and both Gwendoline Christie (Brienne) and Kristofer Hivju (Tormund) absolutely love it.

However, Christie told Entertainment Weekly that we missed out on one Brienne-Tormund scene, since they cut it from the show. She said it showed Sansa “going Mean Girls” on Brienne to tease her about Tormund’s crush; “and you had the powerful warrior who’s totally flustered,” Christie said. Awwww. Seriously, though, between Jaime and Tormund, she’s doing pretty well.

Hivju also mentioned some deleted scenes in his interview with ScreenCrush. (His shipper name for B&T is “Briemund the Tarth Bane”) Here’s part of that talk:

What was it like to play those scenes with Gwendoline Christie?
We had a lot of fun with it. She’s a great actress and she’s a walking, laughing machine. It was a day of doing that. Some of the scenes are deleted. But we had a lot of fun and nobody saw that coming.

    What’s in your deleted scenes?
Ah, you’ll see when the extra material comes out. The only thing the show says about Tormund’s family is he says in “Hardhome” that “Jon Snow is prettier than both my daughters.” So he has kids, but we haven’t seen him – he’s been so occupied with war that he hasn’t been able to think about girls. So finally there was a match for him walking in Castle Black.

Tormund’s poor daughters. Then again, Jon Snow is prettier than everyone. Do you hope “Game of Thrones” includes more Tormienne moments? The showrunners rarely seem to react to what the fans want (except for their recent apology) but maybe they’ll be inspired to write more Brienne/Tormund scenes in Season 7.

  • ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’: Gwendoline Christie Was Inspired by ‘Extraordinary’ Princess Leia as a Child

Gwendoline Christie of Star Wars: The Force AwakensMoviefone was #blessed to attend the “Game of Thrones” and as Commander Lyme in “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2.”

She couldn’t tell us much about the role (the movie isn’t being screened for the press, so we have to wait along with everyone else), not even whether we see her face in the film. “I can’t talk about anything that could be a plot point,” she explained. But she was happy to talk about her love of “Star Wars,” how thrilled she is with the universal appeal of Captain Phasma and what role she’d love to play next.

Moviefone: I understand you’re a huge Star Wars fan.

Gwendoline Christie: I really loved the films. I was shown the film when I was about 6 years old. It was shown to me at Christmastime by my family. And it was very much presented as THIS is “Star Wars.” I just fell in love with it. People are asking me, “What is it you love about it?” and I found it so… indefinable, really. You have that response of total passion, just “I love it! I love it!” Because as a child, it just seemed to take you somewhere else and then when you watch it and as you get older it still takes you to the same place. That’s one of the magic, wonderful qualities about it.

    Who was your favorite character?

I do remember watching it and thinking about Princess Leia and really liking her and really liking the hairdo. And thinking, “Gosh, that is a very different kind of woman to the type I normally see in films. This is something new to me.” And I really liked seeing this woman that’s strong-minded and determined and focused. That struck me. I remember thinking, “I think she’s great,” and wanting to be like her in some way. I did actually say to Carrie Fisher that she had planted the seed and she said, yes, she did! [Laughs] But it’s such an extraordinary role. It comprises so many different elements, that group of misfits that are thrown together to form the Goodies and the Baddies being so…. I found them terrifying as a child, really frightening, but also very stylish.

And now you’re one of the Baddies! Do you think this would have happened without “Game of Thrones”?

Who knows? But I will always be eternally grateful to “Game of Thrones” for giving me such a brilliant platform. George R.R. Martin created a character unlike one I’d seen in mainstream television before. And David Benioff and Dan Weiss have continued with the writing to expand on that story and I’m very grateful for the brilliant material and to HBO for the incredible support. So I’ve had an awful lot of help.

So you think someone at Lucasfilm must be a fan?

Oh, I don’t think I’d ever be so bold!

There’s actually a number of “Game of Thrones” actors in “The Force Awakens,” including Max von Sydow and Jessica Henwick.

    Yeah, I love that!

Which has the most rabid fans, “Star Wars” or “Game of Thrones”?

I don’t think I’ve had enough experience of “Star Wars” fans yet. Really, the experiences I’ve had so far with both fanbases have been just been very positive. I’ve been around people that are incredibly passionate and loving of the films and so excited that there’s going to be a new film, like we all are. I certainly didn’t think they’d make any “Star Wars” films again. And then when I heard it was happening, and I heard that J.J. [Abrams] was directing it…

What was your reaction when you heard you’d got the part?

I didn’t get that moment of “You’ve got it and it’s happening.” Because I had a very wonderful problem in that I was shooting “Game of Thrones” at the same time that “Star Wars” was going to be shooting. There was a certain amount of working out to be done. Both “Star Wars” and “Game of Thrones” were incredibly generous and worked together to facilitate this amazing opportunity for me. It was really only my first day on set when I remember saying “Is it happening?” And they said [whispers], “Yeah, I think it’s happening.”

    Are you still pinching yourself?

Yeah! [Laughs] Every single day! And it hits you in such weird waves. I saw some sort of advert for “Star Wars” on the television and I’d had a very long working week and I was overtired and I just burst into tears and said, “I can’t believe this.”
gwendoline christie as captain phasma I can imagine! You’ve said you think Captain Phasma will be a cultural icon like Boba Fett…

I think I’ve said that Captain Phasma is a Boba Fett-style character, but I would never be so bold to say, “I think this character’s going to be a cultural icon!” [Laughs]

What will be the moment when you think she’s really caught on? Or has it already happened?

It was around Halloween, actually. People were sending me photos saying, “My little girl loves dressing up as Captain Phasma. And also, “My little boy loves dressing up as Captain Phasma.” And that, to me, was delightful. J.J.’s been open about the fact that he’s wanted to honor the authenticity of the films that we all love and to use real effects. And to give us an experience that we’ll love and to feel like we’re watching a “Star Wars” movie. And that, coupled with — what I think is very modern — a more diverse cast and characters like Captain Phasma. We have formed a relationship from what we have seen initially due to this character and this character’s actions, rather than the more conventional path of relating to a female character and how she is made flesh. That, I think, is progressive. And that excites me. That and the photos of little boys and little girls dressing up as Captain Phasma, that is more than enough for me.

There was a person on Facebook who complained about Phasma’s armor because, they said, “You can’t tell it’s a woman.” And someone from the official Star Wars Facebook page shut them down with, “It’s armor. On a woman. It doesn’t have to look feminine.” What do you say to people who think you should be wearing a Xena-type breastplate or something?

I’m increasingly surprised by the world and surprised by the fact that it’s truly been recognized that people want to see a more diverse representation of society. And that the conventions that we have experienced so far with regards to portrayals of women and of men, people would like something new. And it’s encouraging to me that the people are speaking.

Tell me about this Captain Phasma dress at Bloomingdale’s that GIles Deacon designed.

I think that dress is fantastic. (You can check out the Vanity Fair photo shoot of Christie in the dress here.) There’s very simple details about that dress: The design of Captain Phasma’s fingers — it’s a lot more complex than what I’m about to describe — they’re cylindrical, so the sleeves on the dress are circular and draped in a way that they move over the fingers in the same way that the costume does. And the breastplate is printed onto a flat piece of fabric. It’s actually a very simplistic, easy-to-wear design, but has a huge amount of flair due to the print, which is an abstraction of Captain Phasma. I think it’s a very smart interpretation of the design and taking it into a different kind of arena. I hope it raises loads of money for charity.

    What charity does it benefit?

The Child Mind Institute, which helps to support and funds research for children’s mental health disorders.

    What’s your next dream role?

I’d like to play a female Hamlet.

    Has it been done?

Yes, but let’s do it again! [Previous female Hamlets include legendary actress Sarah Bernhardt, Frances de La Tour of “Harry Potter” fame and Maxine Peake (“The Theory of Everything“), who just played the part earlier this year in London.]

Star Wars: The Force Awakens” opens everywhere December 18th.

  • ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 6 Will Feature a ‘Vicious,’ ‘Thuggish’ Fight

Winter is coming and, after that, “Game of Thrones” Season 6 will be showing up in the spring. No one battles like GoT and it sounds like at least one doozy of a fight is headed our way in 2016.

Gwendoline Christie (Brienne) recently talked to The Sunday Times and dropped a little hint about a Season 6 scene she had been shooting in Northern Ireland. Here’s a portion of the story, via Gwendoline-Christie.com:

I’ve been fighting for three whole days, three entire days without ceasing or desisting. Really vicious, vicious, up-close, thuggish fighting.” Who with? “I can’t tell you. I could, but I’d have to maim you.” Who won? “Again, it would be the last thing you ever knew.”

Nice. Three days of shooting a vicious, up-close fight. Brienne was just seen killing (we think) Stannis Baratheon. Who is she fighting this time? Well, we don’t know, but some hints were recently revealed via Watchers on the Wall.

*MAJOR FILMING SPOILERS AHEAD. RUN AWAY IF YOU DON’T WANT SPOILERS!*

Still here? Watchers on the Wall has been sharing daily spoiler updates from set, including one on September 10 about a massive battle being filmed in Northern Ireland. They thought it was for Episode 9, traditionally an action-heavy episode. In this case, the battle apparently includes Northern armies, featuring the Umbers, the Boltons, wildlings and — dun dun dun — Jon Snow! Yes, Kit Harington — who recently dropped hints that he was returning — was seen on location, along with Iwan Rheon, who plays Ramsay Snow Bolton.

Now add Gwendoline talking about Brienne being in a fight scene. All together, it has fans wondering if Brienne is part of this massive battle in the north. Maybe Brienne and Jon Snow fight Ramsay together. Who will have the honor of Ned Stark-ing Roose Bolton’s son? If Sansa Stark and Theon Greyjoy aren’t there to do it … our vote goes to “Fat Walda” Frey Bolton. But Jon will do too. He can send Sansa’s regards.

  • Watch Katniss Fight Jon Snow in Genius ‘The Hunger Game of Thrones’ Trailer

    You know nothing, President Snow!

It was only a matter of time before the Internet produced a soul brave, funny, and skilled enough to combine the two Snows of “Game of Thrones” — and that time is now. Enter David Elmaleh, whose spoof trailer “The Hunger Game of Thrones: Jon Snow Must Die” is the best thing you’ll see this week.

It’s perfect. It fits so well, you’d think “Hunger Games” writer Suzanne Collins and “Game of Thrones” series author George R.R. Martin planned for this mashup the entire time. In the 1-minute, 22-second trailer, the synopsis teases, “Katniss Everdeen faces off against President Snow…Jon Snow.” We hear Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss whisper, “Nothing good is safe while Snow’s alive” while Kit Harington’s HBO Snow is shown in his icy terrain. The battle and speech shots really do seem to belong together, and it was a brilliant touch to include Gwendoline Christie, who stars in both “Game of Thrones” and “The Hunger Games.”

    Here it is:

Genius. Where is this movie in real life? We need it. The only flaw is that it maligns poor Jon Snow, who doesn’t deserve all the attacks he’s already getting on his own show. If only Ygritte were still alive to stand up for Jon — but Katniss killed her in bow vs. bow combat. Damn you, Everdeen, have you no heart?!

  • See ‘Game of Thrones’ Star’s (Evil?) New ‘Star Wars’ Character, Captain Phasma

There’s no question that “Game of Thrones.” Brienne of Tarth is a fan favorite character and completely pure of heart. Her character in “Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens” is another story. She seems to be on the dark side of the Force, but Vanity Fair offered some hope along with its photo teaser for Christie’s role in the upcoming movie.

Peter Mayhew, aka Chewbacca, tweeted this Vanity Fair shot of the actress. If you can’t read the caption, the part for this particular photo reads, “First Order officer Captain Phasma (Gwendoline Christie) surveys the rubble following an attack.”

As Yahoo noted, Captain Phasma was first seen (briefly) in the second teaser for “The Force Awakens.” The First Order was formed after the events of “Return of the Jedi,” and this image makes Christie’s character look like a Terminator Darth Vader. Here’s some hope that she’s not all bad. As Variety wrote in the story, “Should we really assume that Christie’s Phasma is pure evil? In a franchise where a rakish smuggler can get the princess, a Sith Lord can be redeemed, and a stormtrooper can be a potential hero, anything can happen.” Interesting.

Vanity Fair has been sharing all kinds of “Force Awakens” win, including details on a few other characters. “Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens” will be released in theaters on December 18, 2015.
