2019 Emmy Nominations: ‘Game of Thrones’ Breaks Yet Another Record

    HBO

HBO’s recently-wrapped fantasy epic “Game of Thrones” was expected to clean up at this year’s Emmy nominations, and boy, did it ever, snagging a whopping 32 nods for its eighth and final season. And with that tally, the show has once again broken another Emmys record.

This latest batch of nominations has officially certified “Thrones” as the drama series to earn the most nods for a single season. It bested an impressive 25-year record set by ABC’s “NYPD Blue,” which notched 27 nominations for a single season back in 1994.

“Game of Thrones” had previously set the all-time total Emmy nominations record, with its cumulative 129 nods earned as of 2018 (a record that it’s now broken once again). And it had also become the winningest primetime series ever at the Emmys, taking home 47 statuettes as of last year (yet another record that we think will soon be topped).

As Entertainment Weekly notes, one of the most impressive aspects of this year’s “Thrones” achievement is that every single actor that HBO submitted for awards consideration — and several who submitted themselves — all received nods, bringing the show’s total acting nominations tally this year to nine. That was no doubt welcome news for Kit Harington and Emilia Clarke, who switched their eligibility from the supporting categories to lead last year, and were shut out; this year, they both made the cut.

Sophie Turner received her first-ever nomination this year, in the supporting category, helping “Thrones” to set yet another record. It’s now the only drama series to have four actresses represented in the supporting field in one year (Turner, Lena Headey, Maisie Williams, and Gwendoline Christie), beating the previous record of three.

Expect even more Emmys history for “Thrones” when awards are handed out. The 71st Annual Primetime Emmy Awards are slated for Sunday, September 22 on Fox.

  • A Coffee Cup Showed Up on ‘Game of Thrones’ and Fans Had a Latte Jokes

Even the Mother of Dragons needs her latte, apparently.

Eagle-eyed “Game of Thrones” fans had to do a double-take during Sunday night’s episode when a takeout coffee cup made a brief appearance on a table next to Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) in one scene. The moment immediately went viral on social media.

Such a jolting anachronism on one of the biggest series on television couldn’t pass without Twitter users making a bunch of jokes — including taking swipes at a certain coffee chain’s penchant for misspelling customers’ names, and calling back to last week’s poorly-lit episode (and its cinematographer’s snippy self-defense).

    https://twitter.com/topherlundell/status/1125443216722075651

Variety reached out to “Game of Thrones” art director Hauke Richter for comment on the cup’s cameo, and the trade reported that Richter responded that “he had not yet seen Sunday night’s episode but noted that it’s not uncommon for such misplaced elements to mistakenly end up in the final cut of TV shows and movies.”

“Things can get forgotten on set,” Richter added in his email reply, telling Variety that he thought the mistake had been “so blown out of proportion [because] it has not happened with ‘Thrones’ so far.”

You can draw your own conclusions about whether or not fans are making too big a deal of the error, but we have a feeling that the show’s editors are going to be closely combing every remaining episode for additional mistakes, just in case.

  • New ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 8 Poster Teases Deadly ‘Great War’

New ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 8 Poster Teases Deadly ‘Great War’

    HBO

The eighth and final season of HBO fantasy epic “Game of Thrones” is coming, and a new poster for the farewell episodes promises that the impending wintry war will be a deadly one for the residents of Westeros.

In the image, we can make out many familiar faces, though it’s a chilling — quite literally — depiction.

    HBO

A large pile of bodies — topped by those belonging to Jon Snow (Kit Harington), Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), Arya Stark (Maisie Williams), Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey), Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner), the Night King (Vladimir Furdik), and many, many more — can be seen partially buried in the snow, a sobering reminder that truly no one is safe as the series winds down. Taken in as a whole, the image reveals that all those corpses are forming the silhouette of the Iron Throne, a metaphor for how much bloodshed is required to seize control of the Seven Kingdoms.

The poster is also a direct nod to the upcoming Battle of Winterfell, the epic clash between the North and the Night King’s army. The official “Game of Thrones” Twitter account hinted at that fact, captioning the image, “The great war was here.”

We’ll see how it all unfolds — and which of those bodies is truly a goner — soon enough. Season eight of “Game of Thrones” premieres on April 14.

  • Emilia Clarke Got 3 Dragon Tattoos to Honor Her ‘Game of Thrones’ ‘Babies’

The Mother of Dragons is now The Girl With the Dragon Tattoos.

Emilia Clarke has finished filming her role as Daenerys Targaryen on “Game of Thrones.” We won’t get to see her Season 8 episodes until next year, but she already has us worried about her final scene.

We saw what happened to Viserion in Season 7, and now we have to see what fate has in store for Drogon and Rhaegal (as well as their mother).

But at least the MOD is happy now, sharing a mid-laugh photo that clearly shows off her new wrist tattoos:

    https://www.instagram.com/p/Bn7gJg0l1Jn/

Sweet. Yes, she will be Mother of Dragons forever. Dany is the role of a lifetime, and now she will literally carry a memory with her everywhere.

Clarke previewed this dragon-wrist-tat decision in a May 2018 interview with “Live with Kelly and Ryan”:

That makes her just the latest “Game of Thrones” star to get a post-show tattoo, following Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark) and Maisie Williams (Arya Stark).

“Game of Thrones” just picked up Best Drama at the Emmys, with Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister) also picking up another Emmy. They may or may not be eligible for more Emmys this time next year. HBO has yet to give the final season of “Game of Thrones” an official release date in 2019.

If it were up to author George R.R. Martin we’d have at least two more seasons ahead after this one, but that was not his call. The tears are going to flow when we finally get to see everything they’ve already completed for us.

‘Game of Thrones’: Peter Dinklage Explains What Tyrion Was Thinking in This Scene

Game of Thrones Season 7 finale, Peter Dinklage, Tyrion Lannister

    It was a loaded look.

In the “Game of Thrones” Season 7 finale, Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) peeped a bit when Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) and Jon Snow (Kit Harington) had their first love scene.

    Tyrion did not look pleased.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFoMNkXjaEc

While talking to Entertainment Weekly about “My Dinner with Hervé,” Peter Dinklage explained what Tyrion was thinking in that moment:

“[I]t’s complicated… A lot of the time with Tyrion, it’s professional and personal. Obviously, he has feelings for Daenerys. He loves her — or thinks he does. She’s awe-inspiring. He’s questioning that because he doesn’t have a good track record for falling in love. There’s jealousy wrapped up in there. And he loves Jon Snow, too. They’re the two people he has the most in common with, in a way — they’re both outsiders in their own families who have refused to follow the path their family has taken, and hopefully for the better. He’s wondering how smart of a move [Jon and Dany getting romantically involved is], because passion and politics don’t mix well. He knows the two of them getting together could be very dangerous.”

It’s true that passion and politics have not mixed well on “Game of Thrones.” If Robb Stark were around, he’d agree.

Is Tyrion really falling in love with Dany? Guess that was always a possibility, but it seemed more like a respectful friendship/partnership than romance. It would make that other Tyrion theory extra creepy, but hey — incest has been part of this show since the first episode. So Dany has Jon, Tyrion, and of course Jorah Mormont in love with her. She’s creating quite the harem. #MotherofFriendZones

“Game of Thrones” finales love to give us loaded looks to analyze. ‘Memba Littlefinger and Sansa in the Season 6 finale? Also Jaime and Cersei? The upcoming Season 8 finale may do the same, but seeing as it’s also the series finale episode, hopefully it doesn’t leaving us with too many lingering questions.

“Game of Thrones” Season 8, the final season, premieres in the first half of 2019 on HBO.

  • Jason Momoa Says ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 8 Will be ‘Greatest Thing Ever Aired on TV’

Premiere Of Warner Bros. Pictures' 'Justice League' - ArrivalsIt’s going to be a while before fans get to see the final six episodes of HBO series “Game of Thrones,” but one former star is promising that season eight will be worth the agonizing wait.

Jason Momoa, who played Dothraki king Drogo on season one of the hit fantasy show, chatted with Entertainment Weekly about a recent visit he paid to the “Thrones” set in Belfast, Ireland, where he was catching up with his pals in the cast and crew. According to the actor, his visit inadvertently revealed some spoilers about how the series wraps, and though he’s disappointed he won’t be surprised by certain developments, he teased that audiences should be thrilled by what’s ahead.

“Just knowing how amazing this season is going to be — it’s going to be the greatest thing that’s ever aired on TV,” Momoa told EW. “It’s going to be unbelievable. It’s going to f— up a lot of people.”

The actor also addressed the rumors that pop up seemingly every time he appears in an Instagram photo with his pal and former love interest, Emilia Clarke, suggesting he’s somehow set to reprise his role as Drogo. That’s not in the cards, according to Momoa.

“I just showed up to see [producers David Benioff and Dan Weiss] and I just happened to see people on set,” the actor told EW. “I haven’t been over there in a long time. You just want to see your friends and you end up make headlines going, ‘Drogo’s back!’ and I’m like, ‘He’s dead! He can’t come back, it wouldn’t work.’”

This could very well be some elaborate misdirection (see: the unsurprising Jon Snow surprise revival) on Momoa’s part, though with the recent Jon-Dany romance development, it would certainly be an awkward time for Drogo to return. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.

There’s no premiere date yet for “Game of Thrones” season eight, though it’s likely to debut sometime in 2019. Stay tuned.

  • The Full ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 6 Trailer Is Finally Here

After months of Game of Thrones” is finally here, and boy, are there a lot of goodies for fans to savor.

The moody clip (expertly soundtracked by James Vincent McMorrow’s sparse cover of Chris Isaak tune “Wicked Game”) is packed with eye-popping visuals and throat-catching theatrics, including some harrowing speeches promising plenty of drama for the residents of Westeros in the season ahead.

“Everything they’ve taken from us, we’re going to take back, and more,” Jamie, returned from Dorne, promises Cersei as they plot their revenge. Later, Cersei pledges to “choose violence” going forward.

“You’re in the great game now. And the great game is terrifying,” Tyrion warns an unseen foe.

That terror extends to just about every character in the show, who all get brief cameos during the trailer. There’s glimpses of Jon Snow (whose fate is still infuriatingly vague), Bran, Sansa, Arya, The Mountain, Theon Greyjoy, Danerys, Brienne of Tarth, Melisandre, and many, many more. And lest we’ve forgotten the sexier aspects of “GOT,” there’s also a brief look at a lesbian makeout session. It’s good to know that some things never change.

The clip pulls double-duty at being both enticing and confusing, which is really what any good trailer should strive for. There’s still over a month before the new episodes debut, which should be plenty of time to parse the promo for any and every clue it provides.

  • George R.R. Martin Says Tolkien Inspired ‘Game of Thrones’ Ending

67th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards - Press RoomFans of the “Game of Thrones.” According to the author, he’s taken lots of inspiration from fellow heavily-initialed author J.R.R. Tolkien, and the last two books in the series, “The Winds of Winter” and “A Dream of Spring,” will reflect that.

But for those thinking that Gollum or a giant glowing eye are going to show up, think again. Instead, Martin revealed that he’s really looking to mimic the tone that Tolkien established in the final book in the “LOTR” series, “Return of the King.” During an alumni event at Northwestern’s Medill School of Journalism on Wednesday, the author expanded on that thought. Vulture reports:

“I think you need to have some hope,” he said, referencing the manners in which sagas end. “We all yearn for happy endings in a sense. Myself, I’m attracted to the bittersweet ending. People ask me how Game of Thrones is gonna end, and I’m not gonna tell them … but I always say to expect something bittersweet in the end, like [J.R.R. Tolkien]. I think Tolkien did this brilliantly.”

Martin went on to explain that he himself “didn’t understand that” when he read the book as a boy. Now, however, he has a different view, as reported by Vulture:

Tolkien’s use of allegory to reveal life’s grittier truths (the tragedy of post-war Britain in the late ’40s and early ’50s, in the case of Lord of the Rings), even in the face of a well-earned victory is brilliant. You can’t just fulfill a quest and then pretend life is perfect, he said. Life doesn’t work that way.

Those comments reflect similar statements Martin has made about the series’s end in the past, and it’s good to know that his vision hasn’t wavered since then. That also could mean he’s actually a lot closer to releasing those elusive books, the next of which may or may not be coming out sometime next year.

Either way, audiences can expect to see some of this vision play out their television screens soon, since the show is set to overtake the events of the already-published books any time now. May we suggest (with lots of love, of course) that Martin stop talking about “ASOIAF”‘s ending so much and maybe just write it already?

  • Emilia Clarke and Jason Momoa’s ‘Game of Thrones’ Reunion Is Too Cute

game of thrones, emilia clarke, jason momoa, khaleesi, khal drogoTheir separation in season one of “Game of Thrones” was pretty tragic, but Emilia Clarke and Jason Momoa were all smiles as they reunited this weekend.

Clarke and Momoa, who once ruled the Dothraki together as Khaleesi and Khal Drogo on the hit HBO fantasy series, were both in France on Saturday for Paris Fashion Week, and met up for a series of adorable photos, proving that their onscreen chemistry wasn’t just an act. Clarke shared a sweet snap of the pair embracing and laughing, though she added to the cuteness by captioning the shot with a reference to one of her character’s famous “GOT” quotes.

“Well I guess the sun rises in the west and sets in the east then huh?” Clarke wrote, a response to the line Daenerys delivered to Drogo before he died: “When the sun rises in the west and sets in the east, then you shall return to me, my sun and stars.” Excuse us while we swoon a bit.

Momoa had plenty of love for Clarke, too, posting a bunch of photos of the actress posing in a giant hat and affectionately calling her “my khaleesi” (well, he misspelled it as “khalessi,” but you get the idea). Check out the seriously cute shots below.

  • Dear Angry ‘Game of Thrones’ Fans: Stop Emailing George R.R. Martin

Playboy And A&E's "Bates Motel" Event During Comic-Con Weekend - InsideGame of Thrones,” based on his book series “A Song of Ice and Fire,” Martin is also in the midst of many other projects, including developing new shows for HBO and Cinemax and writing the latest “Ice and Fire” book, “The Winds of Winter.”

But despite Martin’s packed schedule, apparently some “Game of Thrones” fans are hoping he’s going to step in and change some recent disturbing events that took place on the HBO series — or at the very least, comment publicly on them, or perhaps speak to “Thrones” producers about toning things down in the future. In an effort to stop that madness — and get people to stop emailing him about it already — Martin took to his blog to ask for a ceasefire.

“It is not my intention to get involved in those [issues], nor to allow them to take over my blog and website, so please stop emailing me about them, or posting off-topic comments here on my Not A Blog,” Martin wrote. The author urged fans to use other “GOT”-specific message boards to air their grievances, and added that he had very little say — or really, none at all — over what happens on the program.

“Yes, I know that THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER named me ‘the third most powerful writer in Hollywood’ last December. You would be surprised at how little that means,” Martin wrote. “I cannot control what anyone else says or does, or make them stop saying or doing it, be it on the fannish or professional fronts. What I can control is what happens in my books, so I am going to return to that chapter I’ve been writing on THE WINDS OF WINTER now, thank you very much.”

So seriously, guys: Get off George R.R. Martin’s lawn Leave George R.R. Martin alone. After all, he’s trying to finish “Winds of Winter,” and plenty of fans would rather read that book for themselves before it’s all spoiled on the show anyway.
