2017 Golden Globe Nominations: The 5 Biggest Snubs and Surprises
That sound you heard after Don Cheadle, Laura Dern, and Anna Kendrick read out the names of this year’s Golden Globes nominees this morning? That was the inevitable head-scratching over the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s sometimes on-point — but usually baffling — picks for the year’s best in film and TV.Here are five of their choices that knocked us out of our chairs.
1. A Deafening “Silence”
Two films that almost everyone was sure were going to be nominated for Best Drama were awards-season favorite Martin Scorsese‘s epic “Silence” and “Fences,” the latter directed by Denzel Washington. He and VIola Davis did get nominated for acting in “Fences,” but that was it for the prestigious Broadway-bred drama.Still, that’s more than the silent treatment the Globe voters gave to “Silence.” In their places: World War II drama “Hacksaw Ridge” — which also earned nods for star Andrew Garfield and director Mel Gibson, to whom the foreign reporters of the HFPA have always been kinder than their American counterparts — and rural new-noir “Hell or High Water.” Both are acclaimed movies but were considered long-shots in this race. By the way, Garfield also stars in “Silence,” so for Scorsese, the actor’s nomination for Gibson’s film over his probably adds insult to injury.
2. “Deadpool“
It was a pleasant surprise to see the satirical superhero movie nominated in the comedy categories for Best Film and Best Actor (Ryan Reynolds), both because it came out way back in February and because, well, it’s a superhero movie. The genre tends to get no love at awards time, but then again, the movie itself blew a raspberry at the genre, so maybe the filmmakers and the Globe voters were on the same page. Also, a worldwide gross of $783 million is hard to ignore; clearly, “Deadpool” was a favorite in many countries whose reporters are HFPA members.
3. Jon Snow, Killed Again
Yes, we live in a golden age of television where there’s a glut of great shows on broadcast, cable, and now streaming, but that also means there were too many snubs in the TV categories to count. No Stranger Things?” No Westworld”? Nothing, not even a cup of coffee, for the “Gilmore Girls” revival?Still, the one that hurts the most is Game of Thrones” actor flippin’ RETURNED FROM THE DEAD for your entertainment, then delivered his most dramatic season ever, culminating in the epic “Battle of the Bastards.” Plus, he spent more than a year off-screen fooling the world into thinking he wasn’t coming back. If that’s not award-worthy acting, what is?
4. Issa Rae
The Globe voters pride themselves on being ahead of the pack when it comes to discovering new TV talent, since the calendar gives them an eight-month head start over the Emmys. They especially like anointing new comedy ingenues. After crowning Jane the Virgin”) two years ago and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”) last year, it’s now Rae’s turn for her delightful turn as a muddling single gal on HBO’s “Insecure.”5. “Finding Dory” Denied
Granted, the Best Animated Feature category already has two deserving Disney movies in it, “Zootopia” and “Moana.” Still, the slot everyone expected would go to the fish-tale favorite went instead to something called “My Life as a Zucchini.”For the record, it’s a stop-motion film about an orphaned boy, submitted by Switzerland this year as the country’s entry into the Oscars’ Best Foreign Language Film pool. It wowed ‘me last May at Cannes. Still, fans of what is (so far) the biggest hit of 2016 have to wonder if there isn’t something fishy about this selection.

Meryl Streep to Receive Cecil B. DeMille Award at 2017 Golden Globes

Meryl Streep has proven once again that there’s no prize she can’t win: The celebrated actress has been selected to receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globes in January.
The honor, which is the Globes’ version of a lifetime achievement award, is given to entertainers in honor of their body of work throughout their careers, and Streep’s is certainly one to admire. She has the most Oscar nominations of any actor in history (19, with three wins), and also holds that distinction from the Globes (29, with eight wins). Recent recipients have included Denzel Washington, George Clooney, Woody Allen, Jodie Foster, Morgan Freeman, Robert De Niro, and Martin Scorsese.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association also saw the award as a no-brainer, citing Streep’s stellar career in a statement announcing the honor:
“It’s no surprise that the HFPA has chosen Meryl Streep as the recipient of the 2017 Cecil B. DeMille Award,” HFPA president Lorenzo Soria said. “Meryl’s enthralling body of work across a diverse set of genres has made her a role model over the past 40 years, and she will continue to do so for generations to come. She has always taken roles with strong female leads, creating art by showing vulnerability and portraying truth on the big screen. Simply put, she is a trailblazer, having paved the way for women in television, film and stage. For shattering gender and age barriers, all with finesse and grace, the HFPA is humbled to bestow this honor upon her.”
Streep will accept the award at the Golden Globes ceremony on January 8, 2017.

Jimmy Fallon Will Host the 2017 Golden Globes
NBC is keeping things all in the family with its latest selection of Golden Globes host: Jimmy Fallon will emcee the awards show next year. The “Tonight Show” host was tapped for the gig on Tuesday. The 74th annual Golden Globe Awards are set to air on NBC on Sunday, January 8, 2017.
Fallon took to Twitter to celebrate his new hosting duties, writing, “I’m so excited to be hosting The Golden Globes in January.” He also couldn’t help but get in a little dig at the Republican presidential candidate, quipping that he was “looking forward to spending time with the Hollywood Foreign Press before Donald Trump has them all deported.” (Viewers can also probably expect some jokes about the Globes’ new set of rules, which are attempting to cut down on category fraud.)
I’m so excited to be hosting The Golden Globes in January.
— jimmy fallon (@jimmyfallon) August 2, 2016
And I’m really looking forward to spending time with the Hollywood Foreign Press before Donald Trump has them all deported.
— jimmy fallon (@jimmyfallon) August 2, 2016
Fallon’s selection was an immediate hit on Twitter, where his pals at former home “Saturday Night Live” celebrated his selection with a classic GIF from “The Barry Gibb Talk Show.” Fallon may not be any match for fellow “SNL” alums and perfect Globes hosting duo Tina Fey and Amy Poehler (please, come back to us someday, ladies!), but if he manages to score a Justin Timberlake cameo during the ceremony, he’ll have done a fine job.

Gina Rodriguez Lends Her Golden Globes Dress to Fan for Prom
Gina Rodriguez just keeps continuing to be Jane the Virgin” star lent her 2015 Golden Globes dress to a fan, and the girl just attended her prom while wearing the gown. The story began on social media back in January when Jessica Casanova, a high school senior from Buffalo, New York, tweeted at Rodriguez that she would love to wear the actress’s navy Zac Posen gown from the 2016 Globes to her upcoming prom. To Casanova’s shock, Rodriguez replied to her request, and though the actress didn’t have access to the Posen gown anymore, she did still own the black Badgley Mischka that she wore while winning a statuette back in 2015. Rodriguez offered that gown to Casanova instead.

Golden Globes Set 2017 Date, Announce New Category Rules
The 2017 Golden Globes have an official airdate, and with it, a revised set of rules that aim to clarify confusion over the drama and comedy categories, among other issues.First up, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has pegged January 8, 2017 as the date for the 74th Golden Globes ceremony. Next year’s event will be the first under the scrutiny of a new slate of rules, among them those that will attempt to cut down on so-called “category fraud” when it comes to submitting films for awards.
The most famous recent example of such was Ridley Scott’s “The Martian,” which was submitted in — and won the statuette for — the Best Comedy or Musical category in 2016. Star Matt Damon also took home the trophy for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical, and quipped about the odd category classification in his acceptance speech.
But under the new HFPA guidelines, such a scenario would be less likely to play out. The new rules state that “motion pictures shall be entered in the category that best matches the overall tone and content of the motion picture. Thus, for example, dramas with comedic overtones should be entered as dramas.” The organization will then determine whether or not to accept studios’ category submissions, and if it decides to change a film’s classification, it must secure 2/3 majority membership vote do so. Studios and publicists are also prohibited from lobbying the HFPA over category designations.
In addition to those rules, the HFPA is also putting more scrutiny on itself, now prohibiting members from “attend[ing] events (including parties, receptions, lunches and dinners and similar events) at which Golden Globe nominees are present. HFPA members may continue to attend screenings and press conferences available to comparable members of the media at which nominees are present, but may not solicit individual press opportunities with nominees during this period.” The HFPA has long been chastised for allegedly offering awards to studios and nominees who successfully wine and dine its membership; these changes appear to be aimed at amending that criticism, and the Globes’ credibility along with it.
The 74th annual Golden Globes ceremony will air on NBC on January 8, 2017 at 8 p.m. No host has been announced yet.

Jon Hamm’s Name Is Spelled Wrong on His Golden Globe
It’s been eight years since the 2007-2008 writers strike shook up Hollywood, disrupting the production of television and films for 100 days. Among the casualties of the strike was the 65th Golden Globe Awards, which skipped the traditional telecast in favor of a press conference announcing the winners in January 2008. Jon Hamm was among those victorious on that odd night, though as the actor recently revealed, his award is distinctive for a different reason. In an interview with Vanity Fair this week at the Sundance Film Festival, Hamm discussed his win, which came for the first season of “Mad Men.” It remained the only awards recognition the actor received for the series’s seven-season run until he took home the Emmy in 2015 (and received another Globe just last month), but unfortunately for the actor, there was something a little off about his statuette.
The award, which Hamm said was sent to him after the press conference “in the mail,” has a plaque on which the Hollywood Foreign Press Association “spelled my name wrong,” he told VF.
“I was like, ‘Oh man, guys, there’s no H,’” Hamm recalled of seeing “John Hamm” scrawled on his statuette. “I haven’t gotten the little plaque to stick on the new one yet, so hopefully they’ll figure out … it’s J-O-N. Or Jonathan.”
We can only hope. Show Don Draper some respect, HFPA!

Golden Globes 2015: The Top 5 Amy and Tina Moments
It was widely reported that this year’s Golden Globes show would be the swan song for amazing co-hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, news that put us through the five stages of grief pretty quickly (followed by lots of heavy milkshake-drinking). The duo have hosted the glittery awards show for the past three years, exposing the inherently sexist, silly nature of Hollywood but doing with such good-natured aplomb that it never came across as acid or mean-spirited (like the infamous previous host Ricky Gervais). What was kind of upsetting about last night, though, was how little Tina and Amy were actually given to do. It felt like last night the dynamic duo had the least amount of screen time out of any of their gigs. After a terrific monologue (more on that in a minute), they were largely sidelined, interjecting where they could but mostly silent (or hidden backstage somewhere or in the maze of underground tunnels I’m fairly sure exists underneath the Beverly Hilton). Still — when they were on stage, they were genuinely incredible. And if this really is their final job hosting, they went out on top. Obviously.
1. The Monologue
A lot has already been written about their razor-sharp monologue (you can watch it below), but it needs to be reiterated that it was really, really, ridiculously funny. They took aim at the ridiculousness of the evening and its participants (Tina: “You bunch of despicable, spoiled, minimally talented brats”), the brouhaha surrounding the release of “The Interview” (“All the movies North Korea was okay with”), the current nominees (“We Anderson arrived on a bicycle made of antique tuba parts”) and, most damningly, Bill Cosby. (What? You thought two outspoken, brilliant feminist comedians wouldn’t joke about the defamed comedy legend, currently staring down more than two dozen sexual assault allegations?) Maybe the most delightful element of their monologue was when they went around the room talking about who they’d rather or not sleep with. Our favorite bit? Weighing who would be better in the sack — “Boyhood” director Richard Linklater (“Once a year for five minutes”) or “Birdman” filmmaker Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (“Two hours, one take”). All in all: they killed it. Now what can we do to bring them back for year 4?
2. Introducing Margaret Cho
Fairly early in the show, Tina and Amy decided to introduce the newest member of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association — Cho Yun Ja, a North Korean contributor to Movies Wow played by none other than cult comedienne Margaret Cho. She was totally in character, straight-faced and wearing nearly kabuki-style make-up, gripping an issue of her magazine (“Kim: Break the Internet”), taking a selfie photo with Meryl Streep that was photographed by Michael Keaton and photo-bombed by none other than Benedict Cumberbatch. It was pretty great, orchestrated with gleeful anarchy by Fey and Poehler.3. Cho Yun Ja Returns
Thankfully, Margaret Cho’s introduction was not her last appearance — she would pop up periodically throughout the night, even saying the final words of the telecast. But it was her first appearance back after her introduction that was the funniest. Particularly for her final zinger: “Also I think ‘Orange is the New Black’ should be in the drama category. It’s funny but not ha-ha funny.” And then everyone was hacked again.4. Tina’s Awesome Glittery Tux
We just have to take a moment and give it up for Tina’s awesome glittery tux, which she wore during the middle section of the show. This might be the only glittery tux to be more awesome than David Oyelowo‘s glittery tux (undoubtedly part of the Daft Punk evening wear collection). Fey’s outfit had her bow tie all askew and was just looking really, really cool. It was a wonderfully gender-defiant piece of fashion that was also elegant and smart and witty.5. The Matthew McConaughey Joke
Amy’s Matthew McConaughey joke was brief but totally amazing. “When your producers tell you you’re running long, there’s only one thing to do… here’s Matthew McConaughey.” Alright alright alright alright, this was a pretty great joy. Yes it was, yes it was. (By the way, how stoked was McConaughey when his best bud Richard Linklater took home the big prizes last night?) And yes, this was better than the Oprah intro. By a fairly considerable margin.
