Nearly ten years after ‘Zootopia’, it is time to catch up with Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde and see what they have been up to. Surprisingly, ‘Zootopia 2’ is set almost immediately after the events of the first film, making it a seamless transition. For those who have not revisited it in a while, the opening moments remind us of everything that happened in a way that is equal parts entertaining and informative.

The question everyone always asks themselves when it comes to sequels is “is this story worth telling?”. Thankfully, the answer to that when it comes to ‘Zootopia 2’ is yes.

    Story and Direction

Because this story takes place so close to the one that was being told in ‘Zootopia‘, there isn’t a lot of catching up that has to be done with the characters. This is a major plus when it comes to ‘Zootopia 2’ because it allows viewers to fall right back into this world without any questions or concerns.

Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde are now partners on the polic force, but considering that they have not had a lot of time working together, there are some growing pains. This is not only believable, it makes perfect sense as they still do not know each other very well.

Judy and Nick are great at solving mysteries together, that is something that was established in the first movie. Pretty early on a new mystery drops into their laps, and even though it means they need to go on the run, they decide to take it on. Snakes have not been seen in Zootopia for years, and for good reason, everyone is scared of them. However, when Gary De’Snake shows up asking for help, Judy senses he truly needs it.

This sends them on a high stakes, action packed adventure filled with numerous quirky new characters and a whole lot of animal puns that is sure to put a smile on everyone’s faces. Because of this, they visit a lot of new places in Zootopia we have not seen yet, and directors Jared Bush and Byron Howard do a great job of keeping eveything on track and blending well together. What could have easily felt muddled and too much, is not.

Jason Bateman and Ginnifer Goodwin solidified themselves as the perfect choices for this unlikely duo in the first film, and they once again nail their performances this time around. All of the returning cast bring their A-game again, showing fans why they fell in love with these characters in the first place.

The real standout, however, is Ke Huy Quan as Gary De’Snake. He has deserved everything that he has gotten in the last several years as he made his way back into the acting world, and he was the right choice to play this misunderstood character. Kids (and parents) are sure to love Gary just as much as they love Ke, and for good reason. He is the heart of this story, and hopefully this is not the last time that we will see him.

‘Zootopia 2’ is just as fun as the first movie. It features a catchy new song, ‘Zoo’, sung by Gazelle (Shakira) of course. It delivers heart as well as humor, something that Disney Animation does extremely well.

Stay through the credits because in true Disney fashion, there is a tease for a possible third movie that will leave viewers excited and eagerly anticipating more from their beloved Nick Wilde and Judy Hopps.

‘Zootopia 2’ receives a score of 85 out of 100.

What is the plot of ‘Buddy Games: Spring Awakening?’

Following the events of ‘Buddy Games,’ faced with their biggest challenge yet, Bobfather (Josh Duhamel), Doc (Kevin Dillon), Shelly (Dan Bakkedahl), and Bender (Nick Swardson) set out to honor their lost friend Durfy (Dax Shepard) only to find themselves in the middle of where it all began – Spring Break – where they learn their old school ways of partying hardly compete with today’s generation.

Who is in the cast of ‘Buddy Games: Spring Awakening?’

‘Buddy Games: Spring Awakening’ stars Dan Bakkedahl (‘Trumbo’), Kevin Dillon (‘Entourage’), Josh Duhamel (‘Shotgun Wedding’), James Roday Rodriguez (‘The Dukes of Hazzard’), Nick Swardson (’30 Minutes or Less’), Lochlyn Munro (‘Detective Knight: Independence’), with Ginnifer Goodwin (‘Zootopia’) and Jensen Ackles (‘The Boys’).

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with director and actor Josh Duhamel, as well as Kevin Dillon and Dan Bakkedahl about their work on ‘Buddy Games: Spring Awakening,’ making a sequel, their characters’ friendship, how they’ve changed since the first movie, and what Duhamel wanted to say about masculinity.

Moviefone: To begin with, Josh, at what point after making the original movie did you realize that there were more stories to tell about these characters?

Josh Duhamel: I had ideas for days. We have ideas for twelve of these if they’d let us. I knew that there was enough story inherent in just these guys’ relationships, and having a group of friends very similar to these guys, that there’s so many different directions you could go. I felt like we made a funny movie the first time and then I saw how people reacted to it. When we showed it in theaters I was like, “Oh my God, these guys have the same stupid sense of humor that I have.” They get it. I was really worried about it. I’m not kidding. So that was a relief to be honest. Then to see it do really well was even further affirmation that people like to be a little naughty. They like to laugh at things, maybe they’re not supposed to. We went even further on this one because there’s a lot of stuff out there that, to me, is funny. We wanted to do it in a way that wasn’t overly mean spirited. We didn’t want to be mean-spirited in any way. We wanted it to be good-natured, but we did want to poke some fun. We poke a lot of fun at ourselves and it’s the only way to break through this stuff is just to lighten up and not be so sensitive and have some laughs. That’s the main purpose of these movies.

MF: Dan, can you talk about the adventure these guys go on together to celebrate the life of their deceased friend?

Dan Bakkedahl: Well, I think what was really brilliant about this is that if we’re going to start on a down note, like, “Oh my God, one of our best friends just died,” it’s great that we built this, “Okay, we got a plan. It’s half-baked because it’s us.” Then, “Well, okay. Something comes in, but we’re going to stay on track. Okay, now we’re split up, but we’re going to stay on track. Okay, now we’ve all got terrible hangovers, but we’re going to stay on track.” We keep on the mission. There’s a lot of off ramps where we go off to get loaded or try to get laid or whatever our thing is, but ultimately we get back on it because it’s all about honoring this friend.

MF: Kevin, can you talk about how Doc has changed since the first movie and what it was like for you to reprise this character and reunite with the rest of the cast?

Kevin Dillon: Well, I love working with these guys. I had a great time the first time around. I feel like we all hit it off right away. I felt like, I don’t know how he’s really evolved. I don’t really know that. He’s devolving, I feel. He’s still Doc, but these guys don’t give him many credit for that. It’s like, “Oh, he’s a chiropractor, that don’t count.” But I think all he does is wait around for the Buddy Games. To be honest with you, this time the Buddy Games didn’t even really happen. It’s a death that brought us together this time. So we still only did one real Buddy Games with the original ‘Buddy Games.’ It was like an accidental Buddy Games. It wasn’t a planned Buddy Games. But yeah, I think that’s what he’s really waiting for.

MF: Josh, do you think any of the characters have grown or changed since the first film, or are they the same guys they’ve always been?

JD: Well, I like to think that Doc’s probably evolved the most because he was in a pretty dark place in the first one. True to form, we all sort of lifted them up. I got a group of friends that whenever one of us is down, everybody lifts them up. It’s no man left behind. So yeah, I guess I hadn’t thought a lot about how much we’ve evolved, but I think that when you lose somebody you love as much as we did Durfy, I think people’s true colors come out. That’s part of the evolution is even in the worst of times, these guys still show up for each other. I think that’s part of the growth that you see. But at the end of the day, they’re still dudes who want to have fun, who really, truly, I think as they get older, appreciate this friendship that much more.

MF: Finally, the film explores the idea of masculinity and what that is in 2023. Josh, what did you want to explore and say about the idea of masculinity with this movie?

JD: Well, we wanted to have some fun with the extreme stuff that’s out there right now. We didn’t do it in a way to be mean-spirited. We wanted it to be fun, and I’m hoping that even those that are extremely woke can look at this and go, “Okay, that’s pretty funny.” Because we’re still making fun of ourselves at the same time. So it’s like if we’re going to do it to you, we’re going to do it to ourselves too. In this day and age, I think that everybody is pretty damn sensitive and we just wanted to lighten it up a little bit. I wanted to make a movie that was unapologetic, that explored some things that I might be a little bit provocative or controversial and we did it. But I think we did it in a way that balances the line pretty well.

  • Ginnifer Goodwin, Lucy Liu Star in ‘Why Women Kill’ From ‘Desperate Housewives’ Creator

Ginnifer Goodwin, Lucy Liu Star in ‘Why Women Kill’ From ‘Desperate Housewives’ Creator

    ABC/CBS

We’re getting our first look at the characters of “Why Women Kill,” the CBS All Access drama from “Desperate Housewives” creator Marc Cherry.

The 10-episode stars Ginnifer Goodwin (“Once Upon a Time”), Lucy Liu (“Elementary”) and Kirby Howell-Baptiste (“The Good Place,” “Downward Dog”) as three women who live in the same house in different decades — and who all contemplate murder.

    CBS

Ginnifer Goodwin will play Beth Ann, a woman aspiring to be the ideal housewife in 1963. Per CBS, “She is kind, cheerful and warm. But if you get too close, you start to see that she wears a mask to hide her pain. Beth Ann’s whole world revolves around her husband, and so she is understandably defensive and immediately in denial when told Rob is having an affair. Determined to learn the sordid details for herself, Beth Ann is in for a life-changing shift of perspective.”

    CBS

Liu is Simone, an elegant, stylish ’80s woman who’s the picture of urbane confidence. She’s seemingly happily married to her indulgent husband, Karl, But she’s devastated when she learns Karl is cheating on her.

    CBS

Howell-Baptiste’s character is Taylor, whose story takes place in 2018. She’s a fiercely intelligent lawyer whose husband is content to play beta to her alpha. She’s also upfront about being bisexual, and she and Eli have an open marriage, which, so far, seems to be working. Until, we guess, it doesn’t.

“Why Women Kill” is Cherry’s follow-up to “Devious Maids,” which ran for four seasons on Lifetime.

  • ‘Once Upon a Time’ Series Finale Made Ginnifer Goodwin Cry for Another Character

    But happy tears. Happy tears.

“Once Upon a Time” is ending after seven seasons as of the May 18 episode called “Leaving Storybrooke.” Ginnifer Goodwin and Josh Dallas left the ABC show after Season 6, but they and many other originals are returning for the big farewell.

Ginny and Josh met while playing Snow White and Prince Charming, then got married, and now have kids together. The show has changed their lives. They talked to Entertainment Weekly about the whole journey, and specifically about what fans can expect from the finale.

Ginnifer sounds especially excited for the Evil Queen’s (Lana Parrilla) character arc to play out. Here’s what she said when asked to describe the series fianle, and how it compares to past OUAT season ends:

Ginny: I will say that, for the Evil Queen, there is a definitive change in this episode in what she really reveals she has learned, what she has taken to heart. I find it to be so powerful that I cried. That’s part of why I cried all through yesterday.

She continued on that theme when she and Josh were asked about the ending for their characters and how it comes full circle to Season 1:

Ginny: The pitch for the whole show was, “What would a world look like in which the Evil Queen got her happy ending?” And we feel that we’ve finally figured out what that would look like. Josh and I talked in the few minutes we were still awake after yesterday, we talked and talked about what an honor it was to be part of her happy ending. It was beyond satisfying. It was emotional, it was thrilling. It was dreamy. It’s where we always hoped it would go, but it has taken the Evil Queen … like her journey has been so dramatic. That circle has been so dramatic and she’s gone so far, she’s grown so much, that to see the fruits of the writers’ labors was really satisfying. I can’t imagine the fans won’t gobble it up.

Josh: It was really emotional, actually. The story began with Snow and the Evil Queen and Charming. We’re ending it with Snow, the Evil Queen, and Charming. The idea that Regina gets her happy ending is really emotional, that it’s finally come full circle, [it shows that] you just gotta keep at it and you have to keep believing.

Ginny: I love that the ending is open-ended. I feel that even our coming back just exemplifies the fact that nothing is ever over. Despite my devastation that we are ending the show in general, I do feel like we’re leaving it in a way that we could do those specials we discussed, that we could come back in five years, in 10 years, and revisit this. I fantasize about a special miniseries we could do — streaming, I don’t know. I think the revisitation is appropriate. This is the epitome of a Once Upon a Time episode, this is an old-school, nostalgic Once Upon a Time episode.

Read their full interview for a lot more. It would be great to revisit the characters in five or 10 years, or consider that miniseries idea she teased above.

Here are some posts from Josh and Lana from the end of filming:

Jennifer Morrison, who plays the Charmings’ daughter Emma Swan, also returned for the finale, and posted from her last day on the set. For many fans, the show was about Emma even more than the Evil Queen or the Charmings. But that’s part of what made “Once” special — we all had our favorites, and there were many to choose from.

The “Once Upon a Time” series finale starts this Friday, May 11 and ends Friday, May 18, at 8 p.m. on ABC.

  • 11 Reasons Charming & Snow Will Always Give Us All the Feels on ‘OUAT’

Snow White and Prince Charming (aka Mary Margaret Blanchard and David Nolan) are the real reason the heart eyes emoji exists. It doesn’t hurt that the actors who portray them on “Once Upon a Time,” Ginnifer Goodwin and Josh Dallas, are married in real life.

These two haven’t always had it easy, but they’ve stuck with each other through it all and we’re crying now just think about it.

Here are the 11 reasons we get all choked up anytime we think about their fairytale love.

  • Ginnifer Goodwin: ‘I (and We) Will Be Back’ on ‘Once Upon a Time’

“Once Upon a Time” Season 6 just gave us the last episode with Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Prince Charming (Josh Dallas) as main characters. However, Ginnifer Goodwin assured fans that they will be back … eventually.

The Season 6 finale gave Snowing a true happy ending, with a new home and barn in the country for the whole family (including Baby Neal). In an email interview with Entertainment Weekly, Goodwin shared the reason for her exit: “What came with the bittersweet decision to give these characters a happy ending — and the timing couldn’t have been more perfect for that — is room for a new story to grow and flourish as Snow and Charming’s did.”

She added that, she’s “pleased as punch” with how the finale ended the story for Snow and Charming. “They got exactly what they wanted: dramatic, epic love balanced with normalcy (Snow’s word) and the space to indulge in both. Actually, it’s not an ‘end.’ The final chapter of this story line is a continuation… which is kind of Snow’s own point in the finale.”

Speaking of not an end, here’s an interesting exchange:

EW: “Would you return in the future — either next season or for whatever ends up being the series finale?”

GOODWIN: “In keeping with the aforementioned continuation-as-happy-ending, OF COURSE I (and we) will be back. It’s merely time for ONCE to focus on something new because ONCE does ‘new’ extremely well.”

That sounds similar to Jennifer Morrison (Emma Swan) saying she agreed to return for one episode in Season 7, which may or may not be the series finale. For all we know, fans will love Season 7 and it’ll come back for Season 8.

The “Once” showrunners wrote tributes to all of the departing cast members, after their separate statement on Jen Morrison, adding this hopeful note for the future: “And even though we won’t be with them every week, in a show about magic and hope, we fervently believe it won’t be the last we see of them.”

In the meantime, here are details on the new love story of Season 7, which is meant to be just as “epic” as the Snow and Charming love story.

  • ‘Once Upon a Time’ Finale: Josh Dallas Knows Some Fans ‘Will Be Angry & Upset’

At least “Once Upon a Time” Season 6 finale. Oncers are passionate about the show, but also divided on many points, and it’s highly unlikely that they will all be satisfied with how “The Final Battle” leaves the core characters before the “transition” of Season 7.

However, even with his realist hat on, Dallas (aka Prince Charming) told TVLine he thinks “most people” will be happy with the May 14 two-part finale. We know that will be the last time Jennifer Morrison’s Emma Swan will be a series regular, and there have been rumors that it will also be the end for Josh Dallas and Ginnifer Goodwin (Snow White) as well. The married co-stars have yet to speak publicly on that, but we’ll probably get official word from them, and ABC, after the finale.

At this point, Season 7 looks like a lock, but that won’t be official until ABC Entertainment President Channing Dungey announces the network’s 2017-2018 primetime schedule, which she’ll do on Tuesday, May 16.

Ginnifer Goodwin told TVLine that the showrunners “found a magical way to make it go either way,” in case there wasn’t a Season 7 renewal. “I mean, in classic ‘Once Upon a Time’ style, there is a twist… and it serves all of the characters very well.” Discussing the Black Fairy’s curse, and the Final Battle with Emma Swan, Goodwin teased, “What broke the very first season’s curse was a kiss — very pure, unromantic true love expressed between mother and son. The love that it takes in the finale… I feel is categorically bigger.” Josh Dallas added, “It’s going to be a showdown of epic proportions.”

The “Once” showrunners told Entertainment Weekly the finale leaves characters like Emma and Regina in “a satisfying place.” But here’s the real talk Josh Dallas gave TVLine:

“You can’t please everybody. I think that some people will be happy and some people will be angry and upset.” But since “each character gets something that the fans should be happy with, that each character deserves,” he added, “I think most people will be [happy].”

Do you think “each character” includes Baby Neal? They won’t forget about him, will they?

The “Once Upon a Time” two-hour finale airs from 8 to 10 p.m. this Sunday, May 14 on ABC. Here are a bunch of photos from ABC to tease “The Final Battle.”

  • Ginnifer Goodwin: ‘It Felt Wrong’ to Come to Oscars After Bill Paxton’s Death

89th Annual Academy Awards - ArrivalsFans were shocked to hear the news of actor Bill Paxton’s untimely death, but Ginnifer Goodwin was more than a fan. She was a sister-wife.

Goodwin played one of Paxton’s three wives on the HBO series “Big Love,” and she admitted to People that she struggled with the idea of still attending tonight’s 2017 Oscars just hours after hearing about his death:

“It was hard to come here, it felt wrong to come and celebrate anything. But [my husband] Josh [Dallas] reminded me that Bill loved all things Hollywood history and he would want you to be here.”

Goodwin voices the lead character in the Best Animated Feature nominee “Zootopia,” so she and her “Once Upon a Time” co-star and husband Josh Dallas celebrated the film with their attendance.

The actress told People that the second place Paxton would want to be, after hanging out with his family, would be at the Oscars. (Despite his long and impressive career, Paxton was never nominated for an Oscar. But he was nominated for an Emmy and several Golden Globe Awards, and he won a SAG Award for being in the cast of “Apollo 13.”)

“Once Upon a Time” Season 6 returns from hiatus next Sunday, March 5.

But you know you’d be at this DMV every day — Kristen Bell! The first “Zootopia” teaser came out in June, with Jason Bateman explaining that, in the world of this Zootopia, humans never happened. It’s a modern civilized world with anthropomorphic animals wearing clothes, using technology, and (sadly) acting just like us — including “natural enemies” like rabbits and foxes not quite getting along.

In addition to Goodwin and Bateman, “Zootopia” also features the voices of Shakira, Idris Elba, J.K. Simmons, Nate Torrence, Jenny Slate, and Tommy Chong. It’s scheduled for release in theaters on March 4, 2016.
