    • An animated revival of cult series ‘Firefly’ is in the works.
    • Nathan Fillion revealed the news.
    • The original show, created by Joss Whedon, ran for one season.

As the gods of former Joss Whedon shows taketh away (the ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ reboot is not moving forward beyond its pilot at Hulu), they also giveth, as ‘Firefly’ star Nathan Fillion has revealed that a revival of the cult favorite sci-fi series.

The original series, as created by Whedon in 2002, ran for all of one season before being unceremoniously cancelled by the Fox TV network. It returned in movie form with ‘Serenity’ in 2005, but the film didn’t do well enough at the box office spawn sequels.

Now, Fillion –– who has been teasing fans via social media videos featuring his former castmates –– has revealed that a revival of the show is in development in animated form.

All we really know at this point that the narrative would pick up between the end of the show and the movie. Set 500 years into the future during a global civil war, ‘Firefly’ charted the whereabouts of spaceship Serenity and its nine crew members in the year 2517.

With Whedon out of the picture given his checked history of behavior, Marc Guggenheim (‘Arrow’) and Tara Butters (‘Marvel’s Agent Carter’) are the showrunners for the potential new show.

When will the ‘Firefly’ animated series be on screens?

With this new show still in early development, and no official studio/streamer home announced (though surely Hulu is the natural place for it), there’s no word on when or even if it’ll land. You can’t stop the signal!

  • Stephen Amell to Lead the Cast of ‘Suits L.A.’

    Preview:

    • Stephen Amell will play a lawyer in ‘Suits L.A.’
    • It’s the new show from the creator of the USA series.
    • The pilot will shoot in Vancouver from next month.

Stephen Amell might still be best known for wearing a superhero suit in ‘Arrow’, but he’s since also starred in the short-lived wrestling series ‘Heels’. He’s going to need both suit style and grappling skills (metaphorically, at least) for a new job, as Amell has landed the lead in the pilot for new ‘Suits’ spin-off ‘Suits L.A.’.

The new show comes from Aaron Korsh, who created and ran the original ‘Suits’ series, which ran from 2011 until 2019 on the USA network.

Now, thanks to an explosion of interest in the series thanks to it streaming on Netflix, the new show has been ordered to pilot at NBC.

What’s the story of ‘Suits L.A.’?

Assuming it gets picked up, ‘Suits L.A.’ will focus on Ted Black (Amell), a former federal prosecutor from New York, who has reinvented himself representing the most powerful clients in Los Angeles.

His firm is at a crisis point, and in order to survive he must embrace a role he held in contempt his entire career. Ted is surrounded by a group of characters who test their loyalties to both Ted and each other while they can’t help but mix their personal and professional lives.

All of this is going on while events from years ago slowly unravel that led Ted to leave behind everything and everyone he loved.

This new show is not intended to reboot ‘Suits’; instead, much as with CBS’ ‘NCIS’ franchise, it’ll be set in the same world –– which means that the likes of Patrick J. Adams‘ Mike Ross and Gabriel Macht’s Harvey Specter could show up (though we wouldn’t expect Meghan Markle, who also starred on the original series to make an appearance, she’s a little bit busy doing other things).

    What happened with ‘Suits’?

While ‘Suits’ was certainly popular on USA during its run, the show was discovered by viewers when it began showing on Peacock and Netflix last year and ended up breaking streaming records, including spending weeks atop the latter service’s Top 10 chart.

When will ‘Suits L.A.’ be on TV?

That’s more of a question –– it’ll depend on whether the pilot passes muster. Shooting is scheduled to start next month in Vancouver (which will be standing in for Los Angeles as Toronto was used for New York in the original).

Korsch has had mixed success continuing the world of ‘Suits’ before –– direct spin-off ‘Pearson’, starring Gina Torres, only lasted a year in 2019.

    USA Network

The “Suits” spinoff starring Gina Torres can now be called by its name.

The series is titled “Pearson,” according to Deadline, after Torres’s attorney character, Jessica Pearson. It centers on her and her life in Chicago. Previously, the title was reported to be “Second City.”

Torres starred on “Suits” from the show’s beginning in 2011 till she made her exit in Season 6. Her character moved to Chicago for love, and in real life, the actress reportedly chose to leave to be able to spend more time with her family. Torres has, however, continued to appear on the show on occasion, and her spinoff was introduced as a backdoor pilot in the Season 7 finale.

Creator Aaron Korsch has highlighted how the upcoming series will center on politics and noted that it’ll be a dirty business. “Jessica is going to get in a tangle and a tussle with some Chicago politics players,” he previously said.

“Pearson” began production in September. It is executive produced by Korsch, Torres, showrunnner Daniel Arkin, and Doug Liman, David Bartis, and Gene Klein of Hypnotic.

So far, a premiere date has not been announced.

  • USA Reveals Title of Its ‘Suits’ Spinoff Starring Gina Torres

The second show in the “Suits” franchise officially has a name: “Second City.”

Star Gina Torres made the big announcement Monday, according to Deadline. The actress was at NBCUniversal’s upfront in New York, and she reportedly revealed the title as she introduced footage from the “Suits” Season 7 finale. The episode originally aired April 25.

“Second City” will head to Chicago (hence the title), following lawyer Jessica Pearson as she makes a name and a home for herself there. Of course, she’ll face new challenges, especially as the show takes a more political bent. Creator Aaron Korsch previously indicated as much, telling Deadline that the character is “going to get in a tangle and a tussle with some Chicago politics players.”

“Second City” was introduced as a backdoor pilot, meaning its pilot episode came during the “Suits” Season 7 finale. The episode in question brought back Torres’s character once again, one of multiple guest appearances since the actress — a former “Suits” series regular — exited at the end of Season 6. Now, Torres is back in a starring role, and we’ll get to follow all Jessica’s adventures in the spinoff.

USA Network has not yet announced the premiere date of “Second City.”

  • ‘Suits’ Spinoff Starring Gina Torres Officially Headed to USA Network

The possible “Suits” spinoff due to be set up in Season 7’s finale is officially a go.

USA Network announced Thursday that it had greenlighted the Gina Torres-starring project from Universal Cable Productions. The new show will follow Torres’s character, Jessica Pearson, as she takes on “the dirty world of Chicago politics.” The network teased a big adjustment for the high-powered attorney, but also hinted that familiar faces might pop up. Apparently, “old relationships from Pearson Specter Litt could also come in handy” for the lawyer.

Jessica was a central character in the first several seasons of “Suits,” but the character moved to Chicago for love during Season 6. Since then, she has remained involved with the firm, giving Torres plenty of opportunities to reprise the role. “Suits” creator Aaron Korsh described working with her as “an extraordinary pleasure” and said in a statement that he “always hoped [they] would work together again.”

They’re getting that chance now. The two will executive produce the series together, alongside showrunner Daniel Arkin, Doug Liman, David Bartis, and Gene Klein of Hypnotic.

The “Suits” Season 7 finale, complete with its look at the spinoff, airs April 25.

  • Laurence Fishburne, Gina Torres Divorcing After 14 Years of Marriage

38th Annual Kennedy Center Honors GalaLaurence Fishburne and Gina Torres are divorcing after 14 years of marriage.

The “Suits” actress confirmed the news to People.

“With heavy hearts, Laurence and I quietly separated and began the dissolution of our marriage in the early fall of last year,” she said in a statement.

“There are no bad guys here. Only a love story with a different ending than either one of us had expected.”

Torres, 48, and Fishburne, 56, married in 2002 and share a daughter, Delilah. Fishburne has two children from a previous marriage.

“Happily, however, our family remains intact and we will continue to raise our daughter together with love and joy and awe,” Torres said. “As well as raise each other up with respect and love and the continued understanding that we’re in this together, if not side by side.”

Fishburne is currently appearing on ABC’s “black-ish,” while Torres is set to star in an upcoming spinoff of “Suits.” They have acted on screen together, first in “The Matrix Reloaded,” and later on “Hannibal.”
