  • Movie Review: ‘Players’

On Netflix on Wednesday February 14th, ‘Players’ might otherwise seem to be an attempt to resuscitate the romantic comedy genre. But, combined with the cinematic success of ‘Anyone But You’ and the lack of real effort on display here, it’s less a home run and more a strike out.

And that’s despite committed performances from the likes of Gina Rodriguez, Damon Wayans Jr. and Tom Ellis.

    Does ‘Players’ score?

‘Players’ rather suffers by comparison to some other, better romantic comedies that have used the concept to much better effect. The likes of ‘Hitch’ already tackled the idea of finding a creative way into a connection with the opposite sex, though that Will Smith movie was more about finding love than a simple hookup.

And while the new movie has a cast that have all proven entertaining in other projects, this one proves to be something of a letdown in the genre, as the scheming, untrustworthy characters don’t justify the story’s support of their behavior, making for a somewhat sour experience for the viewer despite the entirely predictable and saccharine ending.

    Script and Direction

Liza Koshy as Ashley, Joel Courtney as Little, Gina Rodriguez as Mack and Damon Wayans Jr. as Adam in 'Players.'

‘Players’ script, written by Whit Anderson (who has mostly worked in more dramatic territory on TV, including for shows such as ‘Daredevil’ –– in its Netflix incarnation –– and ‘Ozark’), follows a very well-known rom-com path. In fact, so familiar is it that we’d predict you’ll figure out exactly how it’ll all end up by roughly the second scene. So telegraphed is the true relationship in the film that the rest of the movie feels like it has a giant, ticking neon-colored clock hanging over the characters in question. And no matter how many obstacles the plot throws in their way, the result is truly never in doubt.

Yet it’s also a problem that despite the script looking to convince us that these characters should be together, their connection is so obviously cribbed from other movies (‘When Harry Met Sally’ called, it wants its big New Year speech back) that it’s more annoying than it is charming.

It also falls into the trap of overstuffing on the minor character front, with one tiny role coming across as a direct lift from ‘Office Space’, even if the character doesn’t speak (and certainly doesn’t possess the weird, kooky, unique charisma of Stephen Root).

Director Trish Sie, who made the likes of ‘Pitch Perfect 3’, ‘Sitting in Bars with Cake’ and ‘The Sleepover’, here seems to sleepwalk through the formula, putting the pieces together with enough skill that it has the appearance of a rom-com, but never quite finding the way to making it seem fresh and innovative.

Gender-flipping the main character to have our hookup-happy romantic lead be female (and one that at least mostly doesn’t just come across as a male role re-written for woman) can only carry you so far; if the narrative doesn’t convince, no amount of window dressing will work.

    Performances

Gina Rodriguez has long proved she knows how to be a romantic lead, and since her big break out in ‘Jane the Virgin’, she’s also been adept at developing her career and making other types of roles work. But with ‘Players’ Mack, she’s saddled with a character who is unworthy of her talents. Initially introduced as a woman who isn’t interested in long-term romance, she’s also someone who cherishes her parents’ relationship. While it’s perfectly natural for someone to be complicated, here it mostly seems forced and too convenient.

She has energy and charm to spare, but she can’t make us believe that she’s in love with the person that the movie wants to point to as her soulmate even as she sets her sights on Tom Ellis’ hunky war correspondent –– the chemistry is simply not there in either case.

As Adam, Damon Wayans Jr. plays his role with his typical charisma, but he’s not really given much to use. Adam is a funny, loyal friend, but you can tell his true feelings from moment one.

Ellis brings the British accent and scruffy stubble that made audiences enjoy his work on ‘Lucifer’, but Nick is more of a plot element than he is a real character, and even his best efforts can’t convince us that he’s anything more than that.

Outside of the main trio, Augustus Prew’s Brannagan appears to have wandered in from a Judd Apatow movie (with all the baggage that implies), while Joel Courtney as his brother Little and Liza Koshy as Ashley, the personal assistant to Mack, Bran and Adam’s boss (who strikes up a relationship with Little) are entertaining enough.

    Final Thoughts

‘Players’ is almost more disappointing because of the caliber and efforts of its cast. The story’s a mish-mash of references to other movies and the story meanders along to a totally predictable finale.

This is not one we can really recommend for a date night in –– there are many other better choices if you’re after a little Netflix and chill.

‘Players’ receives 5.5 out of 10 stars.

    What’s the story of ‘Players’?

New York sportswriter Mack (Gina Rodriguez) has spent years devising successful hook-up “plays” with best friend Adam (Damon Wayans Jr.) and their crew. While it has led to countless one-night stands over the years, following their playbook comes with a strict set of ground rules — chief among them: you can’t build a relationship from a play. When Mack unexpectedly falls for her latest target, charming war correspondent Nick (Tom Ellis), she begins to rethink the game entirely. As the lines between work, fun, friendship, and romance begin to blur, Mack must learn what it takes to go from simply scoring to playing for keeps.

    Who else is in ‘Players?

The movie’s cast also includes Joel Courtney, Augustus Prew, Liza Koshy, Ego Nwodim, and Marin Hinkle.

  • Gina Rodriguez and Zachary Levi Starring in New ‘Spy Kids’ Movie

Carla Gugino as Ingrid Cortez, Daryl Sabara as Juni Cortez, Antonio Banderas as Gregorio Cortez, and Alexa Vega as Carmen Cortez in 2001's 'Spy Kids.
(L to R) Carla Gugino as Ingrid Cortez, Daryl Sabara as Juni Cortez, Antonio Banderas as Gregorio Cortez, and Alexa Vega as Carmen Cortez in 2001’s ‘Spy Kids.

Way back in 2001, Robert Rodriguez broke into the family film market with ‘Spy Kids’, which starred Carla Gugino, Antonio Banderas, Alexa Vega, and Daryl Sabara in the story of kids who have to become spies to help their secret agent parents with a world-troubling threat.

The success of that film built a franchise that included three movie sequels and a TV spin-off, plus a variety of other media. We’ve known that he’s been planning to return to the ‘Spy Kids’ universe for a reboot and he’s now locked in the main cast to make up his new secret agent family.

Gina Rodriguez, Zachary Levi, Everly Carganilla and newcomer Connor Esterson are the chosen group, according to Deadline.

This latest ‘Spy Kids’ chapter is set after the children (Carganilla and Esterson) of the world’s greatest secret agents (Rodriguez, Levi) unwittingly help a powerful game developer unleash a computer virus that gives him control of all technology, leading them to become spies themselves to save their parents and the world. Rodriguez wrote the script with his son, Racer Max, who will also be a producer on the movie.

With the new movie, it’s a whole new chapter in the story – there’s no word yet whether any of the previous cast will show up either in this movie or any potential sequels.

And unlike the previous films, the latest ‘Spy Kids’ falls under Rodriguez’s deal with Spyglass, Skydance and Netflix, and will premiere on the streaming service. It follows Rodriguez’s previous movie for Netflix, 2020’s ‘We Can Be Heroes’, and the previous ‘Spy Kids’ franchise small-screen spin-off ‘Spy Kids: Mission Critical’.

From the beginning, Rodriguez’ mission has been to keep his stories diverse. “For me it was a big victory to have the kids in ‘Spy Kids’ be a Latin family,” he said at Comic-Con@Home in 2020. “The studio was like, ‘Why are you making them Latin, though, why don’t you just make them American?” he said. “They are American, they’re based on my family.”

Rodriguez – Gina, not Robert – is still best known for long-running TV series ‘Jane the Virgin’ and has grown her career successfully since that breakout role. She has a busy schedule right now, between new ABC sitcom ‘Not Dead Yet’ and Amazon survival series ‘Last Known Position’. As for Levi, he’ll be back on big screens leading superhero sequel ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’, which is in theaters on and was most recently seen as football star Kurt Warner in the biopic ‘American Underdog’.

While Esterson is mostly a newcomer, he did appear in YouTube series ‘Attaway General’. And Carganilla stole scenes as the adorable Maggie in Apple TV+ series ‘The Afterparty’. She’s also been seen in ‘Yes Day’, ‘The Haunted Man’ and, perhaps most appropriately, played the baby version of Gina Rodriguez’s character on ‘Jane the Virgin’.

The new movie has yet to confirm a release date on Netflix.

  • Disney+ Series ‘Diary of a Female President’ Sets Gina Rodriguez as POTUS and First Episode’s Director

Disney+ Series ‘Diary of a Female President’ Sets Gina Rodriguez as POTUS and First Episode’s Director

    The CW

Hail to the Chief, Gina Rodriguez.

The “Jane the Virgin” star will have a recurring role as the titular POTUS on “Diary of a Female President,” the Disney+ series she is executive producing through her company I Can and I Will Productions.

Rodriguez will also direct the first episode.

The 10-episode first season follows Elena, a 12-year-old, Cuban-American girl (newcomer Tess Romero) as she navigates the ups and downs of middle school and her journey to becoming the future president of the United States. Unabashed, semi-dweeby, ultra-observant and with a strong point of view, she walks through the world with purpose and confidence.

“I established my production company as a vehicle to tell stories for and by the underrepresented,” Rodriguez said. “Bringing this story to Disney+ is a dream come true not to mention hope for our future.”

‘Jane the Virgin’ Gets Series Finale Date on The CW

    The CW

Fans of CW telenovela send-up “Jane the Virgin” will have some time to prepare to say goodbye to the beloved series: The CW has revealed when the show will be signing off for good.

The network announced this week the date of the “Jane” series finale, which is set to air on Wednesday, July 31 at 9 p.m. EST. According to The CW, that installment will be preceded by what’s being dubbed a “celebratory episode,” which will air at 8 p.m. EST, directly before the series finale.

It’s still too early to tell how Jane Gloriana Villanueva (played by the radiant, Golden Globe-winning Gina Rodriguez) will fare when the show’s final episode — which also marks its 100th chapter — wraps, but we hope she’s happy. Girlfriend has been through A LOT. (And frankly, so have viewers.)

Showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman previously promised fans that many loose ends will finally be tied up once “Jane” ends — including who Jane ends up with — and multiple weddings are scheduled. The union of Alba and Jorge (for real this time) has already taken place; now, we just have to wait and see if Jane and Rafael (Justin Baldoni) will say “I do,” too.

    Jane the Virgin Season 5
    The CW

After five seasons of “Jane the Virgin,” the cast said their goodbyes to the CW show on Wednesday when they filmed the final episode.

Closing the chapter was clearly an emotional experience. Several of the series’ stars — including Gina Rodriguez, Justin Baldoni, Yael Grobglas, and more — shared poignant social media posts and photos. Some thanked fans, some thanked each other, and some enjoyed a massive bottle of “Jane the Virgin” champagne.

It’s been a long ride for the cast and crew. The show’s first episode aired in 2014, and now that the final episode has wrapped, they’ve filmed 100 episodes in total. That milestone made their last day of filming all the more special, as the cast’s posts show.

  • ‘Someone Great’ Trailer Sends Gina Rodriguez on a Breakup Adventure

‘Someone Great’ Trailer Sends Gina Rodriguez on a Breakup Adventure

    Netflix

Breaking up is hard to do — but it’s a little easier with the help of good friends and an epic night in New York City.

Netflix unveiled the trailer for its upcoming romantic comedy “Someone Great.” Well, the tone is rom-com, but it comes with a twist. Jenny (Gina Rodriguez) lands her dream job in San Francisco, but her boyfriend of nine years (Lakeith Stanfield) doesn’t want to move or try long-distance dating.

After the breakup, Jenny is depressed — “I leave in a week, and then I turn 30, and then I die, probably” — so her besties (Brittany Snow and DeWanda Wise) bolster her spirits by taking her on one last adventure in NYC.

Call it more of a post-romantic comedy, since the relationship at the heart of it is (seemingly) over, or even a platonic comedy, since the female friendships take center stage.

“Someone Great” premieres April 19 on Netflix.

  • Will Forte, Gina Rodriguez, Tracy Morgan Lend Voices to New ‘Scooby’ Movie

Will Forte, Gina Rodriguez, Tracy Morgan Lend Voices to New ‘Scooby’ Movie

    Hanna-Barbera

A new animated Scooby-Doo movie is getting (mostly) all-new voice talent: “SNL” alum Will Forte will play snack-loving Shaggy and Gina Rodriguez (“Jane the Virgin”) will play brainy skeptic Velma.

Frank Welker, who’s been voicing ascot-sporting Fred since 1969 and Scooby-Doo since 2002, will return to voice the classic characters.

No one has been announced to voice ditzy Daphne. Grey Griffin (aka Grey DeLisle) has been voicing her since 2000.

Tracy Morgan will play Captain Caveman, who’s appeared in other Hanna Barbera cartoons, but not the original “Scooby-Doo.” The premise of the movie: The Scooby Gang join forces with other Hanna-Barbera characters to save the world from Dick Dastardly.

Over the years, the Mystery Inc. crew has had crossovers with everyone from Batman and Robin to the Harlem Globetrotters.

If you somehow missed the howlingly funny “Supernatural” crossover ep, “Scooby-Natural,” it’s on Dailymotion.

“Scooby” is set for a May 2020 release.

  • ‘Carmen Sandiego’ Gets Schooled in Criminal Life in Netflix’s First Trailer

‘Carmen Sandiego’ Gets Schooled in Criminal Life in Netflix’s First Trailer

    Netflix

Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego? On Netflix, of course.

The globe-trotting international thief and criminal mastermind who first appeared in a series of educational video games in the mid-’80s is the protagonist of her very own Netflix animated series.

The reboot explores the origin story of Carmen (voiced by “Jane the Virgin” star Jane Rodriguez), with the trailer providing glimpses of the school where she hones her thieving ways as an agent of V.I.L.E.

But Carmen has a change of heart and decides to turn over a new leaf. She becomes a thief who only steals from other thieves, joined by best pal and sidekick Player (Finn Wolfhard of “Stranger Things”).

Carmen has appeared in television shows before, like the animated series “Where on Earth Is Carmen Sandiego?” which ran for four seasons until 1999. There was also the PBS game show “Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?,” which ran in reruns through the ’90s.

And Netflix is developing a live-action Carmen Sandiego movie, also starring Gina Rodriguez.

  • New ‘Carmen Sandiego’ Sets January Bow on Netflix

New ‘Carmen Sandiego’ Sets January Bow on Netflix

    Netflix

We might not be able to answer where in the world is Carmen Sandiego, but we can say when Carmen Sandiego will be. Netflix announced today via Twitter that “Carmen Sandiego” will debut on January 18th, 2019. Start studying your geography now.

Unlike the earlier iterations of the character, “Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?,” which aired on public television from 1991 to 1995 on public television, and “Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego?,” which aired on public television from 1996 to 1997, this will not be a live action gameshow but a fully animated endeavor. That makes it closer to the fully animated Fox Saturday morning television show “Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego?,” which ran from 1994 to 1999. (All of the series were based on a 1985 educational videogame that inspired a number of sequels, including one set in outer space.)

This new show will serve as something of an origin story for the character (voiced here by Gina Rodriguez), an international thief and raconteur, as well as her sidekick Player (voiced by Finn Wolfhard). According to the official release, “We will follow her escapades and get to determine not only where but WHO in the world is Carmen Sandiego?” Intriguing!

Hopefully the new series will utilize the same charming combination of education and entertainment that the original series did, since nobody minds learning stuff when it’s this fun.

  • ‘Jane the Virgin’ Spinoff in the Works at The CW

‘Jane the Virgin’ Spinoff in the Works at The CW

    The CW

“Jane the Virgin” may be blessed with a spinoff.

The CW is developing a spinoff of the critically acclaimed dramedy, which will debut its fifth and final season in early 2019.

Showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman, star Gina Rodriguez, and writer Valentina Garza are collaborating on the project, which will reportedly feature a new cast and follow a storyline from the flagship. However, there is no intention to air it as a backdoor pilot episode in the final season.

It’s unclear if Rodriguez or any of her current castmates would make an appearance on the spinoff. There have been rumors for years that actor Jaime Camil’s Rogelio would get his own show, but sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that he won’t be the focus of this project.

“Jane the Virgin” has been one of The CW’s most honored series, if not anywhere near the most-watched. It earned the network’s first Golden Globe nomination and has also received notice from the Emmys and Peabody Awards.
