  • Watch the Original and New ‘Ghostbusters’ Casts Unite (and Dance)

Last night, “Jimmy Kimmel Live” welcomed four original “Ghostbusters” stars — Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, and Annie Potts — and four newbies — Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones — for one giant ‘busting session. Also, Guillermo dressed as the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, so maybe he counts for both teams.

JKL shared a new clip from the 2016 movie, which is coming out July 15. That movie features cameos from the OG stars, and all of the guests danced to the theme song, and discussed the original and new “Ghostbusters.”

Jimmy asked Bill Murray what drew him to this project, vs. the other “Ghostbusters” movie pitches over the years. “It was only ’cause I knew these girls were funny,” he answered. “When you see the film, you’ll delight in the film. It sort of rumbles along in the beginning, and you go ‘Oh God, are they going to pull this thing off?’” Everyone laughed, but Murray added, “There is just no quit in these girls.” He has worked with a few of the actresses before. “This is a tough movie to pull off because it’s a big concept, there’s a lot on the plate, there’s a lot of expectation.” He said, by the end, he, Dan Aykroyd, Annie Potts, and Ernie Hudson were “screaming and cheering like we were at a sporting event.”

They also talked about criticism of the new film, and other tidbits, so watch all of the videos from the show:

  • Dan Aykroyd: New ‘Ghostbusters’ Has More Laughs & Scares Than First 2 Films

Dan Aykroyd ain’t afraid of no ghost haters. The man who co-starred in and co-wrote the scripts for the original “Ghostbusters” movie and “Ghostbusters II” recently got to watch the upcoming 2016 reboot, then shared a glowing critique on Facebook:

That’s quite an endorsement. Yeah, Aykroyd is credited as an executive producer for the upcoming film, and both he and Bill Murray have cameos, so he’s not exactly objective — he has his own financial interests at stake. However, he is also deeply tied to the originals, so it wouldn’t have been a shock if he went the Rick Moranis route and stayed away from this movie. Maybe he wanted to help the film out since it has been mired in criticism since it’s announcement, and fans only seem to keep getting angrier.

Some of those angry fans are now commenting on his Facebook post, interpreting his praise as an insult to the original 1984 comedy and its sequel. They have already made up their minds not to see the 2016 film, but aren’t content to just save their money, they have to make sure everyone knows how much they hate it. (The original is worthy of this protective stance — with a 97 percent Rotten Tomatoes rating — but are we really going to retroactively canonize GB2 when many fans and critics didn’t even like it until just this minute?)

“Ghostbusters” opens in theaters July 15.

  • The War Over ‘Ghostbusters’ Gets Ugly as New Trailer Drops

Who knew “Ghostbusters” could be so polarizing? It’s not breaking news that the upcoming reboot, with new (female) ghostbusters, has upset some fans. Reboots of “classics” always get a “you’re ruining my childhood!” backlash, but this one has gotten particularly ugly.

On Wednesday, a new trailer for the 2016 summer movie dropped, and many fans said it’s an improvement on the first trailer (which confused even star Melissa McCarthy): However, that followed a weekend of “nerd wars” online, after @cinemassacre, aka AVGN (Angry Video Game Nerd) issued a video explaining why he would not review the new “Ghostbusters” movie:

That launched an ugly back-and-forth online, with the usual “feminazi” and “MRA”/”man-baby” accusations. Patton Oswalt jumped into the mix to defend the movie — or at least argue that you should SEE a movie before bashing it — and he in turn got attacked by AVGN fans. Not only that, many of them decided to insult Patton by bringing up his wife, who recently passed away.

This is where it gets really ugly:

Those are just some of the nasty tweets sent directly to Patton, simply because he called out a critic for announcing his refusal to watch and review the new “Ghostbusters,” because that critic really loved the original and thought the trailers looked dumb.

Did AVGN also bash, or refuse to see, the sequel to the “timeless” classic original “Ghostbusters”? What other reboots has he non-reviewed, or is this the only one? If he’s upset by the “Ghostbusters” title for 2016, what does he think of the new “Magnificent Seven”? Any complaints about remaking that classic?

Director Paul Feig responded to the overall backlash in an interview with Monsters magazine (via Collider):

“Fellas, we have over 60 million hits. So let’s put it in context a little bit. … All I can ask is, people, either give us a chance, or you don’t have to see it. I’m really proud of it. … I think it’s fun. I’m so proud of my cast. I think the cast is so good, and they can stand in the footsteps of who came before, because they’re such funny people but they’re different. That’s all you really want out of a comedy at the end of the day, is something different and new, and to just see great people do it.”

  • Even Melissa McCarthy Thought the ‘Ghostbusters’ Trailer Was ‘Very Confusing’

GhostbustersThe “Ghostbusters” reboot trailer confused a lot of people — including one of its stars, Melissa McCarthy.

The trailer (which is also the most disliked trailer in YouTube history) made fans wonder if the movie was a reboot or a sequel, since the video begins with the phrase “30 years ago.” In a radio interview, McCarthy cleared up that opening sequence.

“It’s a reboot. I know, it’s weird that they said the ’30 years ago’ because in this movie, the first one didn’t happen. It’s that great story, but told totally differently,” the actress explained.

So, not a sequel, folks! The new “Ghostbusters” — which also stars Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones — does not exist in the same universe as the 1984 original.

McCarthy tried to point out the ambiguity of that opening, but The Powers That Be shut her down.

“Believe me, the question was asked,” she said. “I was like, ‘I think that’s very confusing,’ but then everyone said, ‘We don’t care what you think.’”Ghostbusters (2016) - Trailer No. 1

  • 23 Great Movies We Wish Were on Netflix

%Slideshow-373501%It would be great if every movie ever was on Netflix all the time. Alas, that is not the case. Because streaming rights.

To narrow it down just at tad, there are a few movies — and movie series — that we would love to be able to watch at a moment’s notice. Think “The Avengers” and, duh, “Titanic.”

Here are our favorite movies that we wish we could add to our queue.

  • Leslie Jones ‘Ghostbusters’ Role Originally Written for Melissa McCarthy

After the awesome new trailer for Paul Feig’s “Ghostbusters” reboot dropped last week, there was a lot of backlash surrounding Leslie Jones’s character, MTA worker Patty Tolan. While some fans lashed out at the fact that Jones, the film’s only black cast member in one of the four main roles, was playing a subway employee while three white women were playing scientists, Jones and Feig have vehemently defended the part. And it turns out that originally, a white actress was supposed to play it.

That’s the word from Feig himself, who spoke to Empire magazine this week in an interview breaking down all the major moments from the trailer, including the introduction of Patty. As Feig tells it, when he and co-writer Katie Dippold were penning the script, they had initially pegged Jones’s costar, Melissa McCarthy, for the flamboyant part of Patty.

“… [W]e had written the role with Melissa in mind, but then I thought I’ve seen Melissa play a brash, larger than life character,” Feig told the magazine. “She’s done it in my movies before!”

Feig is, of course, talking about his many previous collaborations with McCarthy, including her starmaking turn in Feig’s directorial debut, “Bridesmaids,” which nabbed the actress an Oscar nomination and international adoration. After Feig and Dippold reconsidered the casting, the director told Empire that he then thought of Jones, the “Saturday Night Live” cast member who’s been wowing audiences with her take-no-prisoners performance on the sketch show since 2014.

“She’s one of my favourite people on the planet,” Feig gushed about the comedian. “I don’t normally like comedy that’s big and loud, but she is able to pull that off in a way that feels real and it’s her. And when I make a movie, I want to find the funniest people I know and once I know what’s the funniest thing about them I want that to be the thing that I put on screen and let shine. This is the role that Leslie can shine comedically in. If you’ve ever seen her do stand-up, it’s just who she is. I wanted to unleash Leslie on the public in the same way we unleashed Melissa on the public in ‘Bridesmaids,’ with a very showy role.”

Here’s hoping “Ghostbusters” can do for Jones what it did for McCarthy — and, as Feig said on Twitter, that the haters can “Grow up and leave [his] cast alone.”

  • Chris Hemsworth (and Boobs) Dominate ‘Ghostbusters’ International Trailer

Chris Hemsworth is Australian, and Thor, so maybe that’s why he has a more prominent role in the international trailer for “Ghostbusters.” Most of the trailer is similar to the first one, but there are a few new scenes, including a failed mosh pit jump by Leslie Jones‘s character, Patty, and several new shots of Hemsworth as secretary/assistant Kevin. Apparently Kristen Wiig‘s Erin, has a thing for him, or at least that’s hinted in a flirty scene toward the start.

The end scene is the best, though, with Melissa McCarthy‘s Patty telling her fellow ‘busters that she had Kevin come up with a few logo ideas for the group. The first illustration is a ghost with big breasts, and no one is happy about it. Erin suggests it may make them look bad. “Is it the boobs?” Kevin asks. “I could make ’em bigger.” Mmmm. Probably not. But thanks!

    Watch the trailer:

“Ghostbusters” is scheduled for release July 15th, 2016.

Aside from the regular version of Kevin, it looks like there’s also a possessed version, too, featuring red eyes and a menacing snarl. He’s accompanied by what appears to be one of the main antagonists of the film, described by LEGO as a “red Daemon,” which looks sort of like a skeletal, evil bat. (We imagine it’ll be even scarier on film, since director Paul Feig has promised a spookier version of events this time around.)

The Ecto-1 car and a motorbike dubbed Ecto-2 are also included in the set. (Check out more photos of the set here.) The entire thing will retail for $59.99, and will go on sale on July 1.

“Ghostbusters” hits theaters on July 15.

  • See Five New ‘Ghostbusters’ Photos, First Trailer Coming ‘End of the Month’

We got one! Actually, we got five fresh images from the upcoming “Ghostbusters” reboot, plus this promise from director Paul Feig that the first trailer is coming soon:

So look for that circa Oscars Sunday, February 28, perhaps.

The photo above is of Chris Hemsworth as Kevin, the 2016 equivalent of Annie Potts’s Janine. He’s more hipsterish than the original ghost-busting secretary, but they both look good in those take-me-seriously glasses.

Here’s a collection of the other four photos, featuring the main stars in character:

According to the breakdown on Ghostbusters.com, Patty Tolan, played by Leslie Jones, is described as “Ghost tracker, municipal historian, metaphysical commando.” Abby Yates, played by Melissa McCarthy, is a “Paranormal researcher, supernatural scientist, entity trapper.” Erin Gilbert, played by Kristen Wiig, is a “Particle physicist, academic firebrand, spectral warrior.” Jillian Hotlzmann, played by Kate McKinnon, is a “Nuclear engineer, munitions expert, proton wrangler.” Chris Hemsworth’s Kevin is just listed as “Kevin,” so that is apparently it for his credentials.

Also on the website, if you look under “Cast,” beneath the four main stars they list “Charles Dance, Michael Kenneth Williams and Chris Hemsworth.” So Tywin Lannister from “Game of Thrones” and Chalky from “Boardwalk Empire” are major players in this, too.

“Ghostbusters” will be released July 15th.
