  • Bill Murray Reveals Why He Took a ‘Ghostbusters’ Cameo

Red Carpet Studio - 2015 Laureus World Sports Awards - ShanghaiThe specter of the original “Ghostbusters” franchise has always loomed over the upcoming all-female reboot, especially when it came to the approval of stars Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray. But while Aykroyd was always enthusiastic about director Paul Feig‘s project, Murray always seemed a bit less so, until word broke that he (along with Aykroyd) had both thrown his support behind the flick, and would appear in a cameo.

So what changed Murray’s mind about returning to the franchise? Vulture caught up with the elusive actor to chat about his thought process, and it turns out that it was pretty careful, if a bit drawn-out. He explained:

I thought about it for a very long time. Like, many, many months. No, that’s not right. I was seriously thinking about this for years, really … It kept eating at me, and I really respect those girls. And then I started to feel like if I didn’t do this movie, maybe somebody would write a bad review or something, thinking there was some sort of disapproval [on my part].

Also part of what influenced his change of heart, Murray said, was that he found it “tough to say no to” the cast and Feig, especially when the project enlisted Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig to star. “I like those girls a lot,” he told Vulture of the comediennes.

“You know, they were incredibly nice to ask me, and I really enjoyed being there,” Murray said of working on the flick, which also stars “SNL” vets Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones. “They have such a jolly group, and they are going to have great success with this project. I didn’t want to overshadow [them] or anything, and I feel really good about it.”

According to Vulture, Murray won’t be reprising his role as Dr. Peter Venkman, but will instead play “a character out to debunk the new ‘Ghostbusters’ crew.” Either way, we can’t wait to see the star back in ‘bustin mode (even if he’s ‘busting the ‘busters).

Ghostbusters” hits theaters on July 15, 2016.

  • Bill Murray Joins ‘Ghostbusters’ Reboot

OK, now it’s a party! Paul Feig‘s “Ghostbusters” reboot is currently shooting in Boston and Bill Murray — arguably the coolest of the OGs — was spotted heading to set. You can check out the photos over at Coming Soon, if you want.

The Hollywood Reporter further confirmed that Bill Murray (aka Dr. Peter Venkman, in the classics) will appear in the movie, even though he had been reluctant to return to the “Ghostbusters” world. According to THR, he had told David Letterman that part of his hesitation came from “Ghostbusters II” not being received as well as the original.
Murray is reportedly filming a cameo, which is what Dan Aykroyd also seems to have. Dan tweeted (then deleted) a note about filming a scene with Kristen Wiig, who stars in the new movie alongside Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones, with Chris Hemsworth in the old Annie Potts role.

“Ghostbusters” is scheduled for release July 15, 2016. Are you glad to see Bill Murray join the cast, in however small a role?

  • Here Are the New ‘Ghostbusters’ Character Names

ghostbusters cast, ghostbusters reboot, ghostbustersWhile there’s still plenty of mystery surrounding Paul Feig‘s upcoming “Ghostbusters” reboot, one additional detail that the director has provided is the four main characters’ names.

Feig tweeted out that fact over the weekend, in response to a fan query about the titular foursome’s identities. While some initial information had been floating around the interwebs for some time now, Feig has finally offered (some) clarity about who these women are.

According to the director, the main character’s names are: Erin Gilbert, Jillian Holtzmann, Abby Yates, and Patty Tolan. (Those names are slightly different from those attached to previous character descriptions that have surfaced online, though we’re assuming the details about the characters’ day jobs are still more or less accurate.) Based on that intel (and the picture from the fan tweet that prompted Feig’s response), we’re still assuming that Kristen Wiig is playing Erin, Kate McKinnon is playing Jillian, Melissa McCarthy is playing Abby, and Leslie Jones is playing Patty.

So now that we can match faces to names, what else can we expect Feig to reveal about his version of the ‘busters? He’s already dropped a bunch of scoops on Twitter, but we’re betting that the director has many more tricks up his sleeve that he’s saving for when the flick hits theaters. We can’t wait.

“Ghostbusters” is set for release on July 22, 2016.

  • See First Shot of New ‘Ghostbusters’ Cast in Full Costume

“Ghostbusters” director Paul Feig has been a tweeting machine lately, sharing photos of the reboot’s car, costumes, and now the core cast in costumes by their Ecto-1 car. Check out this shot of Leslie Jones, Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig and Kate McKinnon hanging with their sweet ride:

If he’s asking, we’d probably call Tim Gunn and the “Project Runway” crew to design more flattering outfits, but that’s clearly not a key concern of the Ghostbusters. They are badasses in action (Kate’s pose wins) and those unique boots are functional … or so we hope.

“Ghostbusters” is set for a July 22, 2016 release, co-starring Chris Hemsworth, Andy Garcia, Michael K. Williams, and Cecily Strong, with Neil Casey as the main villain.

  • ‘Ghostbusters’ Director Reveals Reboot Car, Responds (Politely) to Hater

Who we gotta call to get one of these sweet rides?!

Paul Feig and company are now filming the new “Ghostbusters” reboot, and after sharing a look at the costumes and revealing more details about the cast, we now have a visual on the new ECTO-1 the Ghostbusters will be driving in the movie:

Hopefully they still get to slide down a fireman’s pole when the alarm goes off for a call. We love what we’ve seen so far — almost as much as Egon loves spores, molds and fungus — but some fans are feeling funky about the whole thing and they have not been shy with their complaints. Most of the replies to the #whattheygonnadrive photo were positive, but one guy tweeted to the director: “i’m not sure if you’re either blocking or deleting all negative tweets about this, but it looks terrible. I’m saying that as a fan.” So Paul, ever-so-politely, responded:

Very classy. But now more fans are suggesting changes, as if this is a group project. If you’re not into the idea of rebooting a comedy classic like “Ghostbusters,” that’s cool. Totally understandable. Nothing Paul, Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones post is likely to change your mind. But if you’re curious about the movie, why not trust that these guys know what they’re doing. I mean, they cast Chris Hemsworth in the Annie Potts role — how is that not already a sign of genius?

  • Andy Garcia, Michael K. Williams Join ‘Ghostbusters’

Sophia Loren's 80th Birthday Celebration At The Museo Soumaya In Mexico City, MexicoThe “Ghostbusters” cast is expanding, with several new additions to the already-impressive ensemble recently confirmed.

The Wire” alum Williams is playing a character named Hawkins.

Walsh (“Veep”) will play a character named Rourke. And according to TheWrap, local New York City news anchor Pat Kiernan will put those skills to use to play a TV news reporter in the flick.

That foursome joins previously-announced “Ghostbusters” leads Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones, and Kate McKinnon, who play the titular heroines in the reboot of the 1984 comedy classic. Chris Hemsworth is starring as the foursome’s receptionist for their fledgling ghost-fighting business.

Filming is already underway in Boston (which is standing in for NYC in the flick), and director Paul Feig has already revealed a few looks at the costumes and gadgets that the cast will use. Based on everything Feig has said so far about the film, we’re expecting some scary fun; with the addition of Garcia and Williams, especially, we’re looking forward to some intense dramatic moments, too.

“Ghostbusters” is due in theaters on July 22, 2016.

  • Paul Feig Shares First Look at ‘Ghostbusters’ Proton Pack

GhostbustersA ghostbuster needs something to bust ghosts with, right? That’s where the all-important proton pack comes in, and director Paul Feig shared a first look photo at the essential tool in his “Ghostbusters” reboot.

A day after unveiling the uniforms that Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones will wear, Feig posted an image of the proton pack to Twitter:

Like the uniforms, the pack is very similar to the original, with a few little updates. It looks dirty and worn, which indicates heavy use — ghostbusting is not a dainty business!

In the reboot, Wiig and McCarthy are authors who write a book claiming ghosts are real. They’re laughed out of academia, until ghosts actually do invade Manhattan. So, who’s the world gonna call? The two women, who team up with McKinnon and Jones to save the world. “Ghostbusters” hits theaters July 22, 2016.

  • New ‘Ghostbusters’ Reboot Details Emerge as Filming Begins

Ghostbusters” has officially begun production in Boston this week, and local media has the scoop on some new details about the latest entry in the franchise.

As stars Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones, and Kate McKinnon get ready to shoot their scenes, the Boston Herald reports that they have some intel on a few key plot points. The Herald writes:

Wiig and McCarthy play a pair of unheralded authors who write a book positing that ghosts are real. Flash forward a few years and Wiig lands a prestigious teaching position at Columbia U. (Like the original, the story takes place in New York City, even though it’s being shot in Boston.) Which is pretty sweet, until her book resurfaces and she is laughed out of academia.

Wiig reunites with McCarthy and the other two proton pack-packing phantom wranglers, and she gets some sweet revenge when ghosts invade Manhattan and she and her team have to save the world.

That coincides with previous reports that outline the characters in the flick as (per The Dissolve) “Erin Gabler, an academic on the tenure track at Columbia; Abby Bergman, who pursues ghosts for a living, with a focus on parapsychology; Jillian, Abby’s ghost-hunting partner; and Patty, an MTA employee who comes across the main ghost.” So it seems Wiig will play Erin and McCarthy will play Abby; we’re betting McKinnon is Jillian and Jones is Patty, though of course, no official casting breakdown has been released just yet.

Other juicy bits from the Herald’s report include the fact that green ghost Slimer will return (something director Paul Feig alluded to on Twitter when he announced the beginning of filming), and that filmmakers are desperately trying to work out a deal for original ‘busters Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray to cameo. “They are negotiating,” a source told the Herald, though the notoriously difficult-to-reach Murray has so far been elusive. (Considering Murray was an early champion of McCarthy and Wiig joining the “Ghostbusters” reboot, we think it’s only right that he join in on the fun, too.)

“Ghostbusters” is currently shooting in Boston, and co-stars Cecily Strong and Chris Hemsworth. It’s due in theaters on July 22, 2016.

  • There’s Going to Be an All-Male ‘Ghostbusters’ Reboot, Too

In an apparent sign that boys and girls can never share, Sony has announced plans to stage an all-male “Ghostbusters” reboot in addition to its upcoming all-female flick.

In an interview with Deadline, original “Ghostbusters” director Ivan Reitman revealed the studio’s plans to form a production company focusing exclusively on furthering the ‘busters brand — and that includes a brand-new movie with an all-male cast, much like the first two films. Reitman said that Ghostcorps (the name of the new company) is something he and Dan Aykroyd dreamed up when the first flick hit theaters in 1984, and was in development as recently as last fall with former Sony chief Amy Pascal, who’s since been replaced as studio head and is now producing Paul Feig’s all-female reboot.

Reitman and Aykroyd’s new film is eyeing Joe and Anthony Russo, of “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” fame, to direct, and writer Drew Pearce (“Iron Man 3,” “Mission: Impossible 5”) to pen the screenplay. Channing Tatum and producing partners Reid Carolin and Peter Kiernan are already onboard to produce, according to Reitman, with the hope that Tatum will play one of the four new Ghostbusters. All three parties have reportedly discussed the project and are developing it together, Deadline reports.

Deadline’s report describes this new macho reboot as a counterpart to and continuation of Feig’s film, which stars Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones, and Kate McKinnon. Reitman told the trade that the second reboot would build on Feig’s story, and would aim to shoot in summer 2016, with a release tentatively planned for summer 2017.

“We want to expand the ‘Ghostbusters’ universe in ways that will include different films, TV shows, merchandise, all things that are part of modern filmed entertainment,” Reitman told Deadline of the Ghostcorps mission. ” … My primary focus will be to build the ‘Ghostbusters’ into the universe it always promised it might become. The original film is beloved, as is the cast, and we hope to create films we will continue to love.”

We’re skeptical about the studio’s motivations to launch yet another reboot so soon after the announcement of Feig’s film (was there really such a negative reaction to females taking on this classic franchise that they had to double-down with a masculine interpretation?) but hopeful that in Reitman’s and Aykroyd’s hands, the “Ghostbusters” name won’t be tainted by too much meddling. Stay tuned — it seems there’s a lot on the horizon for Ghostcorps.

  • Paul Feig Says ‘The Walking Dead’ Inspired New ‘Ghostbusters’

The Academy Of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences' Hollywood Costume Opening Party - ArrivalsIt’s already been established that Paul Feig‘s upcoming “Ghostbusters” flick will be more of a reboot than a remake, using the original film as a jumping off point to feature new characters and tell new stories. But it turns out that Feig is seeking inspiration for that fresh story from an unlikely source.

In an appearance on “Talking Dead,” the “Walking Dead” discussion show, Feig told host Chris Hardwick that the AMC zombie drama was a big help to him and screenwriter Katie Dippold in prepping the project.

“I will say, I was very inspired by this show,” Feig told Hardwick. “What I love is how they play with the danger, they play with the scariness, but also the idea that it’s always about gauntlet run. And that’s something, an element I want to bring to this ‘Ghostbusters’ reboot is having to get through these various obstacles that are supernatural and all that. I really feed off of ‘The Walking Dead.’”

It’s strange that a show that takes itself so seriously could partly inspire a comedy, though Feig has said in the past that he wants his reboot to be “scarier than the original.” And while its dramatics could use some help, “The Walking Dead” has always excelled at horror, so Feig taking a cue from those elements makes sense.

“Ghostbusters” stars Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones, and Kate McKinnon. It’s slated for release on July 22, 2016.
