Copshop’ tells the story of Teddy Muretto (Frank Grillo) who is on the run from ruthless hitman Bob Viddick (Gerard Butler). Muretto punches rookie police officer Valerie Young (Alexis Louder) so he’ll be arrested and put into police custody, but Viddick gets himself locked up in the same jail, and it’s up to Young to keep the peace. Gerard Butler and Alexis Louder spoke to Moviefone about their new action thriller.

Moviefone: Gerard, this is a role that we’re not used to seeing you in. I’m used to seeing you in roles where you are the moral compass. You’re pointing north. This character is certainly not like that. So what was the preparation like for this, and was it challenging for you?

Gerard Butler: I guess every role is challenging in different ways. So yeah, it was challenging because it is a character I’m not used to playing, so I had to stretch different muscles and be creative in a different way. But it was also super fun to get my teeth into something that I can have examine that darkness, and that intensity, and that willpower. That ruthlessness. But then try and get some other colors in there, and not have him just as a killer. So yeah, it was fun preparing for it, and it was definitely fun performing it.

Moviefone: Is it bad that I really liked him, still? What does that say?

Butler: I don’t know if that just says I’m a likable guy, or just that I’m not a convincing bad guy.

Alexis Louder: No. Shame on you! Shame! You should not like Viddick.

Moviefone: I don’t know, I think it’s Gerard. I just feel like there’s still something about… Even though he’s playing this bad guy, I still felt like he was a good guy in the end. I don’t know.

Butler: By the way, it was the same in Law Abiding Citizen. I killed everybody, even innocent people, and people were still, “I didn’t want you to die at the end. I liked you so much.” I’m like, “Is that a good thing? I don’t know.”

Moviefone: Alexis, if you had to write a biography for Valerie Young, what would it say?

Louder: It would say that Valerie Young probably grew up in this town, and she has a connection to it and wants to stay there. But she would, as a police officer, she definitely would want to be in one of the bigger, larger markets, where there’s more happening. She’d be taking out drug lords, and kingpins, and different things like that. But the trouble finds her when Viddick and Murretto come into her station and create all this mayhem. Where she has to figure out how to restore law and order in all this chaos. She has an insatiable thirst for justice, she knows the difference between right and wrong, and she feels like it’s mostly black and white. And she’s there to keep the bad guys in jail, where they’re supposed to be.

    Copshop‘ is now in theaters.

Secret Service agent Mike Banning is at it again.

Lionsgate has released a new trailer for “Angel Has Fallen” starring Gerard Butler, and there is no rest for the weary. In the sequel to “Olympus Has Fallen” and “London Has Fallen,” Butler’s Banning is not only trying to protect the president (Morgan Freeman) but also clear his name after he’s framed for an assassination attempt.

The trailer shows Banning discussing migraines he’s been having. He claims they started after a concussion he got in a car accident, but from the rest of the footage we see, there are bigger risks in his life than riding in a car. He becomes the subject of a massive manhunt, and yet, in spite of the danger, he seems to have a plan.

“Don’t worry about finding me,” he says at one point. “I’ll find you.”

    Watch below.

Butler and Freeman star alongside Jada Pinkett Smith, Lance Reddick, Tim Blake Nelson, and Piper Perabo. The cast also includes Nick Nolte and Danny Huston.

“Angel Has Fallen” opens Aug. 23.

Life isn’t getting any less exciting for Gerard Butler‘s Secret Service agent character, Mike Banning.

The new “Angel Has Fallen” trailer is here, and it looks as action-packed as its predecessors, 2013’s “Olympus Has Fallen” and 2016’s “London Has Fallen.” Butler reprises his role as Banning, who works to protect President Allan Trumball, again played by Morgan Freeman. It’s no easy feat — there’s an attempt on the president’s life early on in the trailer, and Banning is framed for the crime. He goes on the run as he tries to clear his name and unravel the plot.

“The president is not safe,” he says. “They’re trying to finish the job, and I’m not going to stop until I prove who did this.”

    Watch below.

The film is directed by Ric Roman Waugh, and the cast also includes Jada Pinkett Smith, Lance Reddick, Tim Blake Nelson, Piper PeraboNick Nolte, and Danny Huston.

‘Angel Has Fallen,’ Third Film in Gerard Butler Trilogy, Is Happening

    Lionsgate

Can’t get enough of Gerard Butler saving the world as Secret Service man Mike Banning?

Good news: There’s a third “Fallen” film: “Angel Has Fallen,” the sequel to “Olympus Has Fallen” and “London Has Fallen,” will be out August 23, 2019.

This time, he’s got to save the president (Morgan Freeman) from a planned attack on Air Force One. That sounds… familiar.

Except that, kinda like Jack Bauer, he’s been framed for an assassination attempt on the president and is on the run.

    Good luck with that, Banning.

The cast includes Jada Pinkett Smith, Lance Reddick, Nick Nolte, Danny Huston, and Tim Blake Nelson, so any of them could be this movie’s scene-chewing villain.

Gerard Butler shared a heartbreaking photo of the damage done to his home in Malibu. He’s among thousands of people who had to flee from the Woolsey and Hill Fires in Southern California.

Butler returned to his Malibu residence Sunday and found it “half-gone,” as he shared on Instagram. “Returned to my house in Malibu after evacuating. Heartbreaking time across California,” wrote the “Geostorm” star.

He also posted two videos on his Instagram story, in which he shows his destroyed property and says, “Welcome to my home in Malibu. Half gone.”

He thanked the Los Angeles Fire Department who has been battling the fires nonstop, saying,”Inspired as ever by the courage, spirit and sacrifice of firefighters. Thank you @LosAngelesFireDepartment. If you can, support these brave men and women at SupportLAFD.org.”

Alongside the video where he surveys the damage, he wrote, “My heart aches for all those who lost their homes and their lives in California. I was one of the lucky ones, my home was only partially destroyed. A lot of people lost everything and will have to rebuild from scratch. I am ok and so grateful for all of the well wishes.” He asked people to donate to those who’ve lost their homes at  GoFundMe.

Among other public figures who’ve lost their houses to the devastating wildfires: Miley Cyrus, director Scott Derrickson and singer Neil Young.

Ireland Baldwin shared on Twitter that her mother, Kim Basinger, lost her home in Malibu. “So many friends and friends and family of friends are losing everything they own in these fires. My mom and her partner lost their Malibu home in #Woolseyfire and thankfully, they are both safe,” she Tweeted. She added that police accused her of looting when she returned to the home to “gather a couple of things.”

Several other famous names are among the thousands who have been forced to evacuate, including Lady Gaga, Orlando Bloom, Kim Kardashian and Guillermo del Toro.

The Woolsey Fire began Thursday night and by Friday  Malibu, Calabasas and neighboring areas had to be evacuated. Between it and the Hill Fire, more than 250,000 have been forced to flee their homes.

Firefighters also faced the Camp Fire in Northern California that’s destroyed over 6,700 structures and killed at least 42 people, making it the most destructive fire in state history.

  • ‘Hunter Killer’ Trailer Takes Gerard Butler on a World-Saving Submarine Mission

‘Hunter Killer’ Trailer Takes Gerard Butler on a World-Saving Submarine Mission

    Hunter Killer
    Lionsgate

Gerard Butler has saved the White House. He’s saved London. Now, he’s saving the world in a submarine.

Lionsgate released the trailer for “Hunter Killer,” which easily fits into Butler’s “Olympus Has Fallen” ouevre (it is from the same producers). Butler stars as Captain Joe Glass, who is at the helm of the titular nuclear attack submarine. When the Russian president is kidnapped in a coup attempt, he and a group of Navy SEALs attempt to save him in order to prevent all-out global war from breaking out.

Of course, that involves a lot of missiles being fired, evasive maneuvers, and worried expressions on the faces of cast members Gary Oldman, Common and Linda Cardellini.

While this really does look like “Olympus Has Fallen But With Subs,” it is not part of that franchise. In fact, the third movie “Angel Has Fallen” is already in production.

“Hunter Killer” opens in theaters October 26.

  • 7 Reasons Why ‘Gods of Egypt’ Was an Epic Box Office Flop

Forget “13 Hours.” With “Gods of Egypt,” 2016 has its first bonafide megaflop.

That may seem a harsh way to describe a movie that opened near the high end of predictions, with an estimated $14.0 million, placing second only to the still-unstoppable “Deadpool.” But remember, “Gods” cost a reported $140 million to make and was supposed to launch the next big fantasy franchise for Lionsgate, the studio behind the “Hunger Games” and “Divergent” films. This weekend’s figures make the prospect of lucrative sequels very doubtful, especially since the movie looks like it’s going to struggle to earn back even a fourth of its budget in American multiplexes.

In retrospect, it’s hard to figure why the studio gambled so much on this film, given all the strikes against it that are apparent now. For instance:

    1. The CastingGame of Thrones.” Actually, Butler does well in the right circumstances, which is why there are higher hopes for his “London Has Fallen” action sequel, opening next weekend.

It’s possible that there are Butler fans who didn’t want to blow their money on the unknown-quantity “Gods” because they’re saving it for the actor’s more familiar franchise next week. But just because he excelled in a swords-and-sandals epic a decade ago doesn’t mean he should be the go-to guy for ancient-world action spectacles.

    2. The Whitewash
This was the even bigger problem with the casting: that the main roles were almost entirely played by white actors. It’s not just an #OscarsSoWhite thing; the time seems to have passed when you could get away with casting an Egyptian story with so few brown performers in it.

In 2014, Ridley Scott famously said he couldn’t have financed his $140-million Egyptian epic, the biblical “Exodus: Gods and Kings,” without a predominantly white cast. But having Christian Bale and box office non-entities like Joel Edgerton didn’t help either. That movie opened with $24.1 million and topped out at $65.0 million in North America. You’d think the makers of “Gods of Egypt” would have learned from “Gods and Kings” and gone for historical accuracy over cynical pandering, but they didn’t, and the result backfired. When the trailers for the new film came out last fall, the backlash was so loud that both director Alex Proyas and Lionsgate issued statements apologizing for the miscalculation. That bad press might not have kept moviegoers away this weekend, but it didn’t help.

    3. The Testosterone
How did Lionsgate think this was going to be the next “Hunger Games” or “Divergent?” Two things those franchises had in common: they were based on best-selling book series, and they had likable teenage-girl heroines. “Gods” has no literary pedigree and is pretty much a sausage fest.

    4. The Filmmakers
Alex Proyas used to be considered a truly visionary director, thanks to cult hits “The Crow” and “Dark City” (pictured). More recently, he’s made big, corporate action/sci-fi movies like “I, Robot” and “Knowing.” He’s working here with the screenwriters behind (woof) “Dracula Untold” and “The Last Witch Hunter,” both movies that critics and audiences alike rejected.

    5. Really Bad Reviews
With a team like that, it’s no wonder that “Gods of Egypt” received such dismal reviews (13 percent fresh at Rotten Tomatoes, 24 at Metacritic). But even audiences gave it poor word-of-mouth, judging by the film’s B- grade at CinemaScore.

    6. The Videogame-y Visual Effects
No doubt Lionsgate was hoping that the movie’s 3D bookings would bring in more money, but by many accounts, “Gods”‘ visuals weren’t that impressive — with creatures and sets that would have been more at home in a video game than on the giant screen. American audiences have shown that they’re not willing to pay extra for 3D unless the movie offers a real treat for the eye.

    7. The Timing
LHF_DAY_20_CR_0154.NEFNot only was positioning the movie a week before Butler’s “London Has Fallen” (above) a bad idea, but so was putting it in the sights of “Deadpool,” which earned another estimated $31.5 million this weekend. In fairness, everyone underestimated “Deadpool.” Still, when action/fantasy fans have a choice between a contemporary Marvel superhero movie and an unfamiliar adventure set in the ancient world, it’s not hard to guess which one they’ll pick.

It’s not all bad news for “Gods of Egypt.” The movie has already earned an estimated $38.2 million overseas, which isn’t earth-shattering, but that total is nearly three times what it earned here. Foreign moviegoers have certainly shown themselves to be less picky than homegrown audiences about the quality of their action movies, non-diverse casting, and ho-hum 3D.

Still, after you take away marketing costs and the share of revenue that goes to the theaters, “Gods” will have to earn about $305 million overseas just to break even. Anyone who thinks that’ll happen is living on de banks of de Nile.

  • ‘Gods of Egypt’ Filmmakers ‘Sincerely Apologize’ for Cast’s Lack of Diversity

Unlike Ridley Scott with “Exodus: Gods and Kings,” director Alex Proyas has chosen to issue an apology for casting a bunch of white people from Europe and Australia as Egyptians in “Gods of Egypt.” Interestingly enough, studio Lionsgate also offered an apology and a promise to do “better.” It’s too late to do “better” for this particular film, which comes out February 26, 2016, but cynics could see this as an attempt to avoid the fate of Scott’s “Gods and Kings.”

“Gods of Egypt” is a fantasy film inspired by the classic mythology of Egypt, starring Gerard Butler, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Geoffrey Rush, and Brenton Thwaites. Here’s how director Alex Proyas and Lionsgate responded to the calls of whitewashing (via Forbes):

    Alex Proyas:

“The process of casting a movie has many complicated variables, but it is clear that our casting choices should have been more diverse. I sincerely apologize to those who are offended by the decisions we made.”

    Lionsgate:

“We recognize that it is our responsibility to help ensure that casting decisions reflect the diversity and culture of the time periods portrayed. In this instance we failed to live up to our own standards of sensitivity and diversity, for which we sincerely apologize. Lionsgate is deeply committed to making films that reflect the diversity of our audiences. We have, can and will continue to do better.”

Ridley Scott faced similar whitewashing calls when he cast Christian Bale and Joel Edgerton as Moses and Ramses in “Exodus: Gods and Kings.” He took a different approach, though, arguing that he could never get funding for his $140 million epic without a major name in the lead role and there just aren’t enough A-listers from the actual place where the story is set. “I can’t mount a film of this budget, where I have to rely on tax rebates in Spain, and say that my lead actor is Mohammad so-and-so from such-and-such,” Scott told Variety. “I’m just not going to get it financed. So the question doesn’t even come up.”

Variety noted that “The Passion of the Christ,” “Noah,” “The Ten Commandments,” and “virtually any other big-budget Bible movies” also cast white Europeans, Americans, and Australians. But that sounds like less of a valid reason for casting white stars than a valid reason for casting more non-white people in roles that can give them a chance to build A-list level profiles, so the financiers who only care about money become more willing to back big-budget films led by people other colors than spray-tanned white.

Fans had mixed responses to the “Gods of Egypt” apologies, but here’s “Selma” director Ava DuVernay to leave things on a mostly positive note:

  • Britain Goes BOOM in ‘London Has Fallen’ Teaser Trailer

Another major city has fallen — and it can’t get up! Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart, and Morgan Freeman survived 2013’s Washington, D.C.-set “Olympus Has Fallen” and they’re back to watch London bridge go falling down (falling down, falling down) and everything else get blown to bloody bits in the sequel, “London Has Fallen.”

Lions Gate just shared the first teaser trailer, along with this synopsis:

The sequel to the worldwide smash hit Olympus Has Fallen begins in London, where the British Prime Minister has passed away under mysterious circumstances. His funeral is a must-attend event for leaders of the western world. But what starts out as the most protected event on earth, turns into a deadly plot to kill the world’s most powerful leaders, devastate every known landmark in the British capital, and unleash a terrifying vision of the future. Only three people have any hope of stopping it: the President of the United States, his formidable secret service head (Gerard Butler), and an English MI-6 agent who rightly trusts no one.”

    Here goes:

So Eckhart is back as the POTUS, with Freeman as the vice president. Angela Bassett and Melissa Leo have also returned, with British actress Charlotte Riley in a new role. The bombs drop January 22, 2016. Will you be there to see them?
