    No-one spins off like Gaston?

If Disney has its way, the boastful, buffoonish character from ‘Beauty and the Beast’ will be getting his own movie.

Last seen in 2017 live-action take on the fairy tale, there played by Luke Evans, the character is now the focus of development on a new film.

While the success of that movie –– which also starred Emma Watson, Dan Stevens and Josh Gad –– spurred development of a potential spin-off TV series starring Evans and Gad (who was his loyal sidekick LeFou), that didn’t come to pass. But according to Deadline, the studio is energized by the new concept (more on that in a moment).

What’s the story of the Gaston movie?

Gaston first appeared in Disney’s original 1991 animated classic (there voiced by Richard White) as an arrogant and ruthless hunter who had unrequited feelings for the main protagonist, the beauty Belle, and ultimately becomes the main adversary of The Beast.

With Dave Callaham –– who has worked across a variety of movies and genres, writing the likes of ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,’ ‘Godzilla x Kong’ and ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ –– on script duty and Michelle Rejwan (‘Andor’) aboard to produce, the story is being kept largely under wraps.

That said, Deadline’s sources have heard that it’ll be a new and original take on the character with a new actor, and that the film will have “swashbuckling” tones to it.

Evans was a great Gaston in the 2017 effort, so whoever takes over the character’s smug mantle will have some big boots to fill. And might the movie go the ‘Cruella’ route and chart where his attitude came from?

When will the Gaston movie be in theaters?

With no director aboard yet and zero casting, don’t expect to see this one on screens just yet. Disney has also to yet to officially announce the movie either.

  • Here’s the Insane Cast List for the ‘Beauty and the Beast’ Live Concert

Disney has unveiled the star-studded lineup for its upcoming live concert staging of “Beauty and the Beast,” and the cast list should have fans eagerly accepting the invitation to “Be Our Guest.”

The two-night event is set for this spring, and like last year’s live version of “The Little Mermaid,” will take place at the Hollywood Bowl. And also like Disney’s previous effort, which featured an eclectic and big-named-filled ensemble, this new staging is a similarly starry affair.

    The cast includes:

    • Zooey Deschanel as Belle
    • Anthony Evans as Beast
    • Taye Diggs as Gaston
    • Rebel Wilson as LeFou
    • Kelsey Grammer as Lumiere
    • Jane Krakowski as Mrs. Potts

Damn, that’s a great lineup. We’re especially excited to see Diggs and Wilson team up as the dastardly Gaston and the dimwitted LeFou. And we also can’t wait to find out who’s playing some of the other parts, like Cogsworth, Maurice, and Chip.

According to concert director Richard Kraft, the event will be a mix of film, live music, singers, dancers, digital projections, effects, and special guest artists, and “pays homage to the original movie but also delivers something that can only be experienced live.”

Sounds like a winning combination to us. The event is scheduled for May 25 and May 26 in Hollywood. Tickets go on sale this Friday, March 16.

  • New ‘Beauty and the Beast’ Clip Features Luke Evans and Josh Gad Singing ‘Gaston’

Gaston (Luke Evans) a handsome but arrogant brute, holds court in the village tavern in Disney's BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, directed by Bill Condon, a live-action adaptation of the studio's animated classic and a celebration of one of the most beloved stories ever told.A new clip from Disney’s upcoming remake of animated classic “Beauty and the Beast” offers audiences their first sneak peek of stars Luke Evans and Josh Gad belting one of the flick’s iconic tunes, and based on the short snippet, it sounds like fans are in for a rollicking good time when the film hits theaters.

The clip, which debuted on “Good Morning America” on Tuesday, features Evans — who plays the preening villain Gaston — and Josh Gad — who plays Gaston’s goofy toady, Le Fou — singing the eponymous tavern ode to manly man Gaston, surrounded by fawning, beer chugging onlookers. It’s just a small section of the tune, though based on Gad’s impassioned delivery and Evans’s casually boastful performance, it looks to be every bit as fun as the animated original.

In a set visit interview with Entertainment Weekly conducted back in 2015, Evans revealed that the new version of “Gaston” will include some lines that were not in the 1991 flick, but which were written at the time by that film’s lyricist, the late Howard Ashman. Though they didn’t make the cut back then, Evans said some of them have been incorporated into the new version, making this latest take on “Gaston” “really, really special,” the actor told EW.

Audiences have just a little over a month before they can hear the full song for themselves. “Beauty and the Beast” opens on March 17.

  • Luke Evans Knows Exactly What You Want From Disney’s ‘Beauty and the Beast’ Remake

Luke Evans, who stars as a man suspected of bumping off his wife in the thriller “The Girl On the Train,” had a blast playing an entirely different sort of villain, the ridiculously vain he-man Gaston in the upcoming live-action version of “Beauty and the Beast.”

Evans told Moviefone, “It’s very similar to the animated [movie]. Extremely similar. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!”

That includes the same songs, including the famous boastful showstopper song “Gaston.” “It’s huge, it’s a huge production number, it’s extremely brilliant,” he says.

When we asked if his chest as hairy as the 1991 version, he laughed. “I do have a hairy chest, but nothing like Gaston’s!” You can glimpse his Gaston, albeit the back of him, in the pic below.
While you might not think of “The Hobbit” star as a singer, he actually has a musical theater background. “I spent the early years of my career on stage in the West End doing musicals and plays,” he explained. “A lot of people don’t know that, so this is great, because it will be quite a revelation when they finally see me sing.”

He (naturally) had nothing but nice things to say about Emma Watson, who plays Belle.

“She’s wonderful. She’s very committed to the role. She puts so much into it. She learned how to sing for it. She’s extraordinary. She put her heart and soul into it.”

His “Girl on the Train” costar Haley Bennett (whose first movie role was as a Britney-esque pop singer in “Music and Lyrics”) told Moviefone she and Evans sang songs from “The Lion King” and “Beauty and the Beast” on set to lighten the mood.

“We would put on little duets,” she shared, saying she’s sad that Evans got to be in a musical, but she did get to play a 1950s singer in the upcoming Warren Beatty film “Rules Don’t Apply.”

As for Evans, he’d love to do more comedy. “I like smiling and laughing. I like making people laugh. I got a bit of a bug when I did the Gaston character, it was so much fun, so I wouldn’t mind trying a bit more of that.”

“Girl on the Train” arrives in theaters Friday.

  • When Luke Evans and Hugh Jackman Have a Gaston Sing-Off, Everyone Wins

gaston, sing-off, gaston-off, sing off, luke evans, hugh jackman, beauty and the beastLuke Evans is playing Disney villain Gaston in the Mouse House’s upcoming live-action remake of animated classic “Beauty and the Beast,” and what better way to test his macho musical mettle than a sing-off with Hugh Jackman?

That was the thinking of UK television host Jonathan Ross, who challenged the actors to do just that when they guested on Ross’s show recently. Jackman, a Broadway vet who’s already played Gaston on stage, had the upperhand in the experience department, but could Evans match the actor’s bravado? The answer is a resounding yes.

With an assist from Jackman’s “Eddie the Eagle” costar Taron Egerton, who stepped in with a pitch-perfect rendition of sidekick LeFou’s introductory verse (seriously, Disney should give him a call for its next live-action musical project), Evans and Jackman clutched beer steins and put on their best swagger, belting “Gaston” with enough gusto to make everyone in the audience swoon (and overlook the odd, giggle-inducing brag, “every last inch of me’s covered with hair”).

So who came out on top in this Gaston-off? We’d give the slight edge to Evans here, but really, we’re all winners after watching this delightful spectacle.

  • First ‘Beauty and the Beast’ Footage Stuns at D23 (But Fans Will Have to Wait to See It)

British Fashion Awards - Red Carpet ArrivalsThe first footage from Disney’s upcoming live-action reboot of “Beauty and the Beast” debuted at the D23 expo this weekend, and it apparently stunned attendees. Unfortunately for average fans, if you didn’t snag a ticket to the event, you won’t be able to see it for yourself.

Despite Disney declining to put the footage up online (so far, anyway), some savvy internet commenters have helped fill in the blanks for those who couldn’t witness “Beauty” (and the first look at its titular star, Emma Watson) in person. And it seems like the flick will almost certainly live up to the hype.

According to a member of the Broadway World message board, who was there for the presentation, “everything I’ve seen from BATB looks stunning, including Emma in the dress.” (“The dress” being the famous gold frock that Belle wears during her romantic dance with the Beast in the latter half of the film.) The commenter continued:

The crowds went wild for it. The set, visuals, costumes, etc. were beautiful. No footage of the objects or the beast.

Another eyewitness report, from TooFab, offers even more details about the footage, and the film in general:

Though nearly done filming, there wasn’t any complete footage shown from this one — save for a shot of Emma Watson as Belle in her now infamous gold dress, coming down the stairs to dance with the Beast. Let us just say that she looked GORGEOUS and seeing that moment brought to life brings chills.

In some behind-the-scenes footage shown, we got a look at the village set, which looks almost exactly like it did in the animated film. Belle is seen in her blue and white dress as well, while Gaston (Luke Evans) can be seen singing and dancing around a bar in his famous red costume and long ponytail. Sorry, nothing with the Beast in it just yet.

The crowd was told that the final film will include two new songs from Alan Menken.

It’s great knowing that filmmakers are so closely incorporating the look of the 1991 original, in everything from the sets to the costumes (anyone else just dying to see that gold dress already?). And Alan Menken’s involvement will almost certainly guarantee that “Beauty” earns a Best Original Song nomination at the Academy Awards, too.

We’d love to see the D23 stuff for ourselves, but if we have to wait, it’s comforting to know that it will be well worth it.

“Beauty and the Beast” is due in theaters on March 17, 2017.
