The first teaser poster for “Wonder Woman 1984” is really leaning into that decade’s look.
Director Patty Jenkins shared the image on Twitter, to throw fans a bone following the news that Warner Bros. won’t be holding a Hall H panel at Comic-Con this year.
The poster shows Gal Gadot in what appears to be a new costume for Diana Prince — red and gold with some serious armored shoulder pads. The background features psychedelic, neon-like W’s.
By now you’ve heard: WB isn’t going to Hall H this year. We’re so sad to miss you there! And waiting until Dec. to start our official #WW84 campaign in full– But the truth is… we can just… barely… wait… pic.twitter.com/QllFzhYRA6
While Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt are definitely on the list, neither is number one, according to Variety’s “Money Issue.” Both apparently took a pay cut (earning a mere $10 million each) to make “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” for Quentin Tarantino.
Who is number one? A sweet $27 million for Michael Bay‘s “6 Underground” makes Ryan Reynolds the highest-paid actor in Hollywood. Thanks, Netflix! (And this list doesn’t seem to include his paycheck for “Detective Pikachu!”)
And at $12-13 million, Emily Blunt‘s fee for “A Quiet Place 2” means she’s the highest-paid actress in Hollywood right now.
In terms of the winter movie cycle, Thanksgiving is a great time to get caught up.
You have a couple of days off, are probably stuffed with, er, stuffing, and want to be prepared for the Christmas movie onslaught that is just around the corner, when both Mary PoppinsandSpider-Man will be vying for your attention (amongst many, many others). So we’ve prepared a handy viewing guide for the Thanksgiving break, for when you want to escape to the theater with your loved ones, or leave them behind while they digest their turkey and watch whatever football game is on. And don’t worry, if you want to watch Netflix instead, we’ve got that covered, too.
‘Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald‘
Warner Bros/Wizarding World
Remember “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” 2016’s ambitious but somewhat confusing fantasy romp that was supposed to serve as an extension of the lucrative Warner Bros. franchise but instead was kind of just huh? Well, they made another one! And this one is much better.
With Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne, again) dispatched to Paris to track down the powerful Credence (Ezra Miller) and foil the plot of villainous wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp), the movie adds some international intrigue, a more admissibly knotty plot and, thanks to an appearance by sexy young Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law), some concrete connections between the various strands of this franchise. Just be warned — before you pile the family into the station wagon, it might be a good idea to re-watch the first movie. Consider that your magic spell for understanding “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.”
‘Widows‘
Fox
Given the pedigree, it’s very clear that “Widows” isn’t your run-of-the-mill thriller. Based on a British prime time series from 1983, it concerns a group of women (among them: Viola Davis, Michelle Rodriguez, Elizabeth Debicki and Cynthia Erivo) who are forced into a sticky situation when their criminal husbands are killed in a heist-gone-wrong.
Directed by Academy Award-winner Steve McQueen and co-written by Gillian Flynn (who wrote “Gone Girl” and “Sharp Objects”), this is a movie that thrills on both an intellectual and visceral level. “Ocean’s 8” it is not.
‘The Favourite‘
Fox
This is the time of year when the studios unleash their stuffy period movies and, yes, there are even a few of those this year. But “The Favourite” is not one of them.
Rambunctious, sexy, and unpredictable, it’s the antithesis of every boring costume drama that they throw Oscars at with willful abandon. This is electrically alive in a way few films, period or otherwise, ever are, anchored by a trio of brilliant female performers (Olivia Colman, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz) and some of the finest direction this year (courtesy of Greek genius Yorgos Lanthimos). Set during the reign of Queen Anne (Colman) in the early part of the 18th century, it features palace intrigue, love triangles, and people getting pushed into muddy ditches. What more do you want?
‘Ralph Breaks the Internet‘
Disney
In the sequel to the hit 2012 animated film, Ralph (John C. Reilly) and Vanellope (Sarah Silverman) head to the Internet, where they fall in with online auctions, meme-creation, and a particularly violent “Grand Theft Auto”-style game called “Slaughter Race” that is lorded over by a bad-ass, leather-clad ringleader named Shank (Gal Gadot). Also, the Disney Princesses show up. As you can imagine, it’s a lot of fun.
“Ralph Breaks the Internet” is one of those rare family sequels that won’t leave you with a toothache from it being so sweet, there’s actual pathos and emotionality but nothing feels syrupy or forced and it’s honestly one of the most visually ravishing animated features you’re ever likely to see.
‘Green Book‘
Universal
Up until this point, Peter Farrelly has directed as one-half of the Farrelly Brothers — serving as the tag-team provocateurs behind gross-out extravaganzas like “Dumb and Dumber,” “There’s Something About Mary,” and the underrated classic “Kingpin.” So it’s interesting to see Farrelly emerge as something of an Oscar frontrunner for his work directing “Green Book,” a based-on-a-true-story racial drama starring Mahershala Ali and Viggo Mortensen.
In the film. Ali plays Don Shirley, a classical pianist, who hires New York tough guy Tony Vallelonga (Mortensen) to escort him on a tour of the South. This could be the feel-good movie of the fall, which makes it a perfect after-Thanksgiving family outing.
‘Creed II‘
MGM
Finally. The follow-up to 2015’s brilliant “Rocky” refresh “Creed” is now upon us. Let us give thanks.
In “Creed II,” Michael B. Jordan returns as Adonis Creed, the son of Apollo Creed, who this time turns to going toe-to-doe with Viktor Drago (Florian Munteanu), the son of Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren), who famously killed Apollo in the ring (in 1985’s Cold War classic “Rocky IV“). Oh, and Rocky (Sylvester Stallone) is still around! So there’s that. Hopefully the sequel builds on the intensity and excitement of the first film, while supplying some new wrinkles as well. We can already feel ourselves getting inspired.
‘Roma‘
Netflix
Yes, “Roma” is a Netflix movie. But in a rare move, the streaming service is debuting the movie in theaters first, before it hits the platform in mid-December. And, really, you should do everything in your power to see it on the big screen. In fact, try and see it on the biggest screen possible. Because this movie is absolutely jaw dropping.
An epic on a miniature scale, the highly autobiographical film from “Gravity” filmmaker Alfonso Cuaron follows a middle-class family in Mexico City in the early 1970s dealing with heartache, political upheaval, and the day-to-day domestic drama that every family deals with. What makes this story even more captivating is that it’s told through the eyes of the family’s housekeeper Cleo (Yalitza Aparicio, giving one of the year’s best performances even though she’s not a professional actor). You have to see this with an audience in a theater. It just won’t be the same on your iPad.
‘Overlord‘
Paramount
If your family is really annoying you over Thanksgiving, it might be time to watch a little more muscular movie at the multiplex. Perhaps something like “Overlord,” a high-concept World War II romp that features thrills, chills, and the cathartic experience of watching sweaty hunks brutally murder Nazis.
Conceived by mystery box magnate J.J. Abrams, “Overlord” is a hard-core horror movie mixed with an equally hardcore war movie, wherein a group of Allied soldiers (among them Jovan Adepo and Wyatt Russell) parachute into France to take down a radio tower on the eve of D-Day and wind up finding a gnarly zombie conspiracy. You know, that old story. But there are some definite grindhouse pleasures to be had as Nazis get shot, blown-up, and lit on fire and then come back from the dead to do it all again.
Fans will have to wait even longer for the upcoming “Wonder Woman” sequel: Star Gal Gadot announced that the flick is getting pushed back seven months.
The actress, who plays the titular DC heroine, revealed the news on Twitter on Monday. “Wonder Woman 1984,” originally set for release on November 1, 2019, is now scheduled to open on June 5, 2020.
Super excited to announce that, thanks to the changing landscape, we are able to put Wonder Woman back to its rightful home. June 5, 2020. Be there or be square!!!
Lest you think that this significant delay is bad news for the film, Gadot herself tweeted that the move would “put Wonder Woman back to its rightful home.” The original 2017 flick opened in June of that year, and according to studio Warner Bros., the blockbuster season is fitting for the heroine.
“We had tremendous success releasing the first Wonder Woman film during the summer so when we saw an opportunity to take advantage of the changing competitive landscape, we did,” Warner Bros. said in a statement. “This move lands the film exactly where it belongs.”
It’s not entirely clear what the studio means by “changing landscape,” but we have a feeling that it has something to do with other superhero flicks swapping their release dates, too, opening up a slot for “Wonder Woman 1984” to swoop in (or perhaps pouncing on the heroine’s original release date, leading the film to look for a new home). Disney recently delayed its upcoming “Jungle Cruise,” so maybe that schedule shuffling influenced Warner Bros. to make similar changes?
Whatever the reasoning behind the switcheroo, it does affect another Warner Bros. release: Mark Wahlberg’s remake, “The Six Billion Dollar Man,” which originally held the June 5, 2020 slot. That flick has been removed from the release schedule entirely for now.
Can you believe “The Simpsons” has been on for 30 seasons? Ay, caramba.
Last night (9/30) was the premiere, with several guest stars — including “Wonder Woman” herself, Gal Gadot, auditioning to play Lisa Simpson in a movie about Bart Simpson’s near-death experience.
The premiere, “Bart’s Not Dead,” featured Bart botching a dare stunt and getting out of it by pretending he almost died and saw heaven and Jesus. That led to a Christian group funding a movie on what happened. For the movie, stars had to audition to play members of the Simpsons family.
Gal Gadot came in to read for Lisa, but Homer couldn’t remember any movies she was in. When told she was Wonder Woman, he quipped, “As soon as I see the DC logo I immediately fall asleep.”
D’oh!
Gadot also wouldn’t let Homer used the Lasso of Truth to kidnap Gene Hackman and force him to play Homer.
(Lex Luthor as Wonder Woman’s father would’ve been pretty amazing.)
Gal Gadot was so excited for her animated appearance:
This family was a huge part of my childhood. And now it's so cool that I get to be apart of the Simpsons' Season 30 premiere episode 😱🙆♀️ Airing tonight!…. pic.twitter.com/3XwmHLhiAy
Branagh will be reprising his role of master detective Hercule Poirot from last year’s hit “Murder on the Orient Express.” He’ll also be in the director’s chair once again.
If Gadot signs on the dotted line, she’ll be playing Linnet Doyle, who is newly married to a former friend’s ex-fiancée, according to THR. That love triangle is the center of the Christie novel, which was first published in 1937.
The character was played by Bond girl Lois Chiles in the 1978 film, in which Peter Ustinov played Poirot.
Per THR, Michael Green, who adapted the screenplay for “Orient Express,” is writing the script.
An equally star-studded cast will likely be announced soon for the film, which already has a release date: November 25, 2019.
And now we can match DC’s “Wonder Woman 2” stars to their respective “Breakfast Club” characters. We have achieved Peak Geek!
“Wonder Woman 2” once again stars Gal Gadot as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman. Joining her this time are Kristen Wiig as villain Barbara Ann Minerva / Cheetah, Pedro Pascal as Not Sure Yet (possibly Maxwell Lord), and — somehow — Chris Pine returning as Steve Trevor.
Director Patty Jenkins posed with them for a “Breakfast Club” tribute that was reportedly posted by Pedro Pascal before he deleted it. But the Internet saves everything, so here it is:
We just saw the epic new photo of the Disney princesses lounging around drinking frappuccinos. But that’s not quite what Gal Gadot’s character will be up to.
Here’s a tease from the star:
I’m so excited to finally announce that I am playing a character named Shank in Disney’s #RalphBreaksTheInternet hitting theaters this November! Such an amazing experience to be apart of this project with such great creators and cast! Welcome to Slaughter Race! 🏎🏁😉 pic.twitter.com/MxLuWFPJ0L
Shank is described as “a tough and talented driver in an intense and gritty online racing game called Slaughter Race.”
“Ralph Breaks the Internet” will be released November 21st, 2018. Gal Gadot is currently filming the “Wonder Woman 1984,” for release November 1st, 2019.
The last few years have brought us plenty of Gal Gadot on the big screen, and she may soon grace our TVs, too.
The “Wonder Woman: 1984” star is reportedly close to reaching a deal for a Showtime limited series from Endeavor Content. She would star as the protagonist, Hedy Lamarr, the actress and inventor, Deadline reports.
It sounds as though the project is a special one for the actress, who would executive produce alongside her husband, producer Jaron Varsano; “The Affair” co-creator Sarah Treem; and Warren Littlefield (“The Handmaid’s Tale”). Deadline reports that Gadot wanted to bring Lamarr’s story to screen, and Treem came up with how to tackle the project. Treem hasn’t reached a deal yet, either, but she is reportedly in the negotiations phase.
The story is said to follow Lamarr’s “life and career,” per Deadline. That should certainly offer a wealth of material. The actress and inventor was born in what was then Czechoslovakia, and she became a film star there before escaping her marriage and moving to France. Later, she ended up in Hollywood after meeting the then-MGM studio head, Louis B. Mayer, in London and again found acting success. And as if she didn’t accomplish enough, she managed to co-develop technology that was a precursor to GPS and WiFi.
It sounds like it could be quite the limited series, especially with Gadot on board.
People have been smitten with Gal Gadot since she made her debut as Wonder Woman in 2016’s “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” and what she did Friday is only going to make them fall harder.
The “Wonder Woman” actress ended the week by being a hero: She visited patients at Inova Children’s Hospital in Annandale, Virginia, dressed as her iconic character, Variety reports. Some of the photos made their way to Twitter, and Gadot and everyone present looked like they had a wonderful time.
“Thank you @GalGadot for visiting us @InovaHealth Children’s Hospital,” wrote Dr. Lucas Collazo on Twitter. “You are a true Wonder Woman. The kids loved it…and so did the staff.”
Besides wearing her superhero outfit to the hospital, Gadot has recently been wearing it on set. “Wonder Woman: 1984” is filming in the Washington, D.C. area ahead of its November 2019 release date.
