Opening in theaters October 17 and streaming on Netflix November 7 is ‘Frankenstein,’ written for the screen and directed by Guillermo del Toro and starring Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, Mia Goth, Christoph Waltz, Felix Kammerer, David Bradley, Charles Dance, and Lars Mikkelsen.

Guillermo del Toro has been waiting to adapt ‘Frankenstein’ to the screen his entire life. Themes, ideas, and imagery from Mary Shelley’s classic tale of Gothic horror – one of the genre’s seminal texts – run through many of Del Toro’s previous 12 films, and while ‘Frankenstein’ has been on his bucket list of movies to make, he’s never had the opportunity until now.

And once offered it, Del Toro seized the chance with both hands to make an extraordinary, gorgeous, deeply moving version of the tale that may end up being the definitive screen version in a long line of previous adaptations. His ‘Frankenstein’ is not slavishly faithful to the book – and in fact Del Toro brings a very personal stamp to the narrative that changes its meaning in deeply profound ways – but it’s loyal to the spirit and tone of the story, bringing out its many layers through an incredible cast and a sumptuous production that immerses the viewer fully in the world of Victor Frankenstein and his doomed creation.

    Story and Direction

The story follows the outline of Shelley’s novel, beginning with a prelude in which the crew of a ship trapped in Arctic ice comes upon a badly injured, dying man who identifies himself as Victor Frankenstein (Oscar Isaac). The ship is soon besieged by a towering, humanoid, seemingly indestructible figure who is after Frankenstein. From there, both parties tell their side of the tale to the ship’s captain (Lars Mikkelsen).

It’s a tale told many times, with which we’re all broadly familiar: Frankenstein, devastated as a boy by the death of his mother and emotionally wounded by his cold, distant father (Charles Dance), sets out to find a way to bring back life to the dead. Ostracized by the medical community, he finds backing from a wealthy arms dealer named Heinrich Harlander (Christoph Waltz) and his own younger brother William (Felix Kammerer), who now controls the family estate in the wake of their father’s passing. But less enthused is William’s alluring, enigmatic fiancée — and Harlander’s niece — Elizabeth (Mia Goth), who suspects that Victor is tampering with aspects of nature that he dares not try to control.

But Victor presses forward, and eventually succeeds at creating a nameless being (Jacob Elordi) out of the parts of many different dead men. This is where Del Toro not so much diverges from the novel but brings one of its many underlying themes to the forefront: the nature of the relationship between a parent and a child. The creature is seemingly unable to learn words, only plaintively repeating his creator’s name over and over. Like his father before him, Victor becomes impatient and actively abusive toward what he fails to see as his own son. Only Elizabeth sees the true nature of the creature, and her compassion at least gives it a glimpse of a better humanity.

Victor ultimately cannot abide what he sees as a failure and attempts to destroy his creation, which escapes into the countryside and – thanks to the kindness of a blind man who cannot see his new friend’s hideous visage – learns to read, speak, think, and finally try to figure out its place in what is largely a cold, uncaring world. When he seeks out his creator again, only for Victor to rebuff the creature’s request for a mate to allay his intense loneliness, the creature is consumed with rage, setting out on a rampage to destroy everything in his maker’s life while making Victor watch.

Other versions of the story have touched on the idea that the creature is a misunderstood and misguided child, but Del Toro makes this the focus of his adaptation, turning it into the most emotional ‘Frankenstein’ to ever hit the screen. Despite his monstrous appearance and often insensate rage – a fury which also makes this the goriest ‘Frankenstein’ we’ve ever watched – the creature is a sympathetic figure throughout. Unloved by his father and rejected by those who see only his appearance, Frankenstein’s creation is a walking metaphor for so many lonely, abused, outcast people in the world today.

The movie, which runs nearly two and a half hours, begins somewhat slowly; at times one may wonder if Del Toro is overcomplicating some of the table-setting of the first act (it took us a while to figure out whether or not, for example, Harlander actually had a purpose in the story). But it picks up momentum and achieves an operatic grandeur as we get to the creation sequence and everything after that. Once the creature – played to perfection by an unrecognizable Elordi in mostly prosthetic makeup – arrives, the dominant conflict of the film takes it to soaring new heights of melodrama. This isn’t a horror movie, per se, despite the Gothic settings, intense production design, and rivers of blood and viscera that run through it; this is a tragedy, and it’s almost impossible to remain unmoved by the creature, his plight, and the endgame between what both creator and creation finally recognize as father and son.

    Cast and Performances

Mia Goth as Elizabeth in ‘Frankenstein’. Photo: Ken Woroner/Netflix © 2025.
Mia Goth as Elizabeth in ‘Frankenstein’. Photo: Ken Woroner/Netflix © 2025.

Del Toro couldn’t have cast his three leads better, but we have to begin with Elordi as the creature. Strongly inspired by Shelley’s own description, the creature looks like a walking anatomy drawing gone haywire, with stitching and mismatched slabs of flesh crisscrossing his tall, lean, meat-colored body. He’s not human, but he has the spark of humanity in him. Elordi is nothing less than riveting every time he’s onscreen, conveying the creature’s pain, loneliness, anger, and emotional need with great power even through the makeup. It’s a brilliant performance that deserves to become as iconic as that of Boris Karloff.

Oscar Isaac brings his customary fire and passion to the role of Victor, a man so tormented by the lack of loving parents in his life that he realizes far too late that he’s become one himself and must adjust accordingly. A bundle of ego, raw energy, and intellectual superiority, you can’t quite hate Isaac’s Victor even as you recognize his fatal flaws.

Elizabeth, meanwhile, has been expanded from the book, no longer Victor’s devoted fiancée but a progressive woman who can see the beauty in nature – even when it’s not immediately apparent – and has an almost ethereal sense of the boundaries between life and death. Mia Goth, after her earthier turns in the ‘X’ trilogy and ‘Infinity Pool,’ looks like she stepped out of a 19th century painting and provides a sole, empathetic voice of wisdom (Goth also briefly plays Victor’s mother in a neat dual performance).

    Final Thoughts

On every level, this is a superb film. Costumes, production design, and score are all top-notch. The visual effects, particularly those involving the creature, are nearly as impressive – only two scenes involving clearly CG wolves mar the film in that respect. The world of the movie is immersive, with Del Toro using his customary painterly colors to give this period epic a mix of the grotesque and the glorious.

But it’s the story, its themes, the actors, and the rising tide of emotional power that make this ‘Frankenstein’ unlike any that has come before. Del Toro has said that he’s wanted to make his version of Mary Shelley’s literary landmark for 30 years. He’s not only done the book justice and then some, but he’s created his own masterwork that – like a loving parent – he should be proud to send out into the world.

‘Frankenstein’ receives a score of 95 out of 100.

Del Toro is working on a new thriller that would star ‘Frankenstein’s Oscar Isaac that is currently titled ‘Fury’ (whether it changes names down the line because of the 2014 David Ayer tank drama remains to be seen).

Guillermo del Toro poses backstage with the Oscar® for Animated Feature Film during the live ABC telecast of the 95th Oscars® at Dolby® Theatre at Ovation Hollywood on Sunday, March 12, 2023.

Here’s what del Toro had to say at a TIFF Q&A about this potential new movie:

“I’m writing a project to do with Oscar. I’m writing it right now, and it’s called ‘Fury’, and essentially it’s going back to [the] sort of thriller aspects of ‘Nightmare Alley’ — very cruel, very violent. Like ‘My Dinner with Andre’ but [with] killing people after each course.”

And here’s why del Toro said he was drawn to the project:

“Because I’m very interested in the violence we do to each other, and we do it with our minds, we do it with our souls and we do it physically. And I think it’s new questions [I’m having]; I’m 60 now, so I’ve gone from asking where I’m going and [being a] father and son to [experiencing] regret. I’m in the regret decade, so expect a lot of regret.”

What else is Guillermo del Toro working on?

In addition to this new movie, GDT is still busy with a stop-motion adaptation of ‘The Buried Giant’, which had already been announced.

Del Toro offered an update on that one:

“I am, right now, preparing a stop-motion adaptation of ‘The Buried Giant’, the Kazuo Ishiguro novel. And it is going to be an epic stop-motion that is not going to be for kids. It’s truly exploring the capacity to act, of a stop-motion project, and fuse a world the way you would do it if it was a live-action.”

When will ‘Fury’ be on screens?

With that project at such an embryonic stage, there’s no word on who would distribute it (though we would imagine Netflix will be interested following its collaboration with the director on his stop-motion ‘Pinocchio’ and the live-action ‘Frankenstein’).

Talking of the latter, it will debut in select theaters October 17th and on Netflix’s servers November 7th.

“I recently had the great pleasure of playing the creature in Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Frankenstein’. Guillermo is a real-life genius and I’m immensely grateful to be in the film. I’m proud of the work we all put into it.”

Guillermo del Toro himself, as well as actors Oscar Isaac and Mia Goth then took the stage to greet the fans and introduce the teaser trailer for the film.

“Thank you. I’m Guillermo del Toro. This is for me the culmination of a journey that has occupied most of my life. I first read Mary Shelley’s ‘Frankenstein’ as a kid and saw Boris Karloff in what became for me an almost a religious state. Monsters have become my personal belief system. There are strands of Frankenstein throughout my films, ‘Cronos’, ‘Blade’, ‘Hellboy’, big time on ‘Pinocchio’, and a long, long, etc. Exploring the relationship between humanity and monsters, creator and creation, father and son, has consumed my stories again and again. I wanted to make this film even before I had a camera, and I have actively been pursuing it now for 25 years. It has grown so close to me that now it is my biography. Now, tonight here, finally, we can share it with you.”

Epic Universe is Universal Orlando’s fourth theme park, not far from Universal Studios Orlando. It houses five brand new lands, including Celestial Park, How To Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk, Dark Universe, Super Nintendo World, and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic. Epic Universe’s theming is inspired by the heavens, stars, and constellations, and once guests step through the towering Emerald Gate and Chronos device, they will find themselves in Celestial Park. From there, they will be able to access the four other portals leading them into various lands.

During the media preview week, there was an opening ceremony for each of the portals. As the Chrono device “powered up” to open the portal, the characters of the respective land would appear, along with music, pyro, fire, smoke, and sometimes confetti to welcome guests. While these portal opening ceremony is not likely to happen once Epic Universe is officially open, it was exciting to see the efforts put in by Epic Universe to make entering each portal a unique experience during the media preview.

The new Helios Grand Hotel sits on the Epic Universe property, and is said to be the most unique hotels in the world. In partnership with Lowes Hotel, the Helio Grand has 500 rooms including 35 suites. The best perk of staying here would be its dedicated entrance right into Epic Universe.

Upon walking into the Helio Grand Hotel, you’re met with the view of massive windows that lookout into the theme park. The hotel’s theming is parallel to what you’d see in Celestial Park, making the transition from one place to the next smooth and flawless. Dining options includes the restaurant Flora Taverna on the main floor, Bar Helio that offers a stunning 360 degree view, and the poolside Lotus Lagoon.

During media preview, Executive Chairman of Loews Hotel & Co Jonathan Tisch proudly mentions that the Helio Grand Hotel makes the 11th hotel on Universal Property, “On Universal campus now, we have 11 hotels, 11 thousand rooms, and with our partners at Comcast and NBCU, it really is a remarkable partnership”

Jonathan Tisch talks about getting the phone call that started the Helios Grand Hotel project

“We got a call to build a hotel but this time it’s a bit different. You’re looking at this amazing amusement park, and this hotel, the Helios is one of the most unique hotels in the world. Universal Stella Nova Resort and Universal Terra Luna Resort – It really is just a a project that we’ve been in talk for a long time. So we’ve been very busy at those hotels. We’ve opened up three hotels of three and a half miles here, all in anticipation of this weekend in the amazing opening that we’ll all see soon. On Universal campus now, we have 11 hotels, 11 doves and rooms, and with our partners are Comcast and NBCU. It really is a remarkable partnership.”

What Can You Find In Celestial Park?

Universal Orlando's Epic Universe Grand Opening. Photo: Wendy Lee Szany.
Universal Orlando’s Epic Universe Grand Opening. Photo: Wendy Lee Szany.

Celestial Park houses a gorgeous and lush garden, the Cosmos fountain, the Constellation Carousel, and the dual-track rollercoaster Stardust Racers. There are several dining and shopping options located throughout. This portion of Epic Universe serves as the crossroads that leads to the four other lands within. Using a hub-and-spoke layout, guests can travel in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction to their next destination. At times, Celestial Park can feel like a maze with its ever extending gardens and ponds.

While Celestial Park isn’t themed to any particular IP, the attractions here should not be overlooked. The Constellation Carousel takes guests on a different carousel experience, as the celestial creature ride vehicles also spin, making one feel like they’re moving in different directions instead of the usual 360 degrees on a classic merry-go-around.

The Stardust Racer rollercoaster is hard to miss. The retro-themed coaster stands tall at 133 feet and features dual tracks. The Stardust Racer will launch guests from 0 to 62 MPH, taking riders high into the sky before descending into a series of drops and twists, while crisscrossing with the other track. Both tracks offer a slightly different experience, with the Yellow track offering more twists while the Green track has more drops and dips. The ride is designed to look like comets in the sky, and it truly takes on that feeling with a night ride. The tracks are not lit, so the only lights are coming from the ride vehicles themselves.

For dining, there are two full-service restaurants and a few quick-service options. The full service restaurants are the Atlantic and the Blue Dragon. The Atlantic offers a variety of seafood fare and is themed to its aquatic name, with large floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook Neptune’s Pool. The Blue Dragon serves up Asian-inspired dishes, and the decor features neon light signage and motifs inspired by East and Southeast Asia. There is also a variety of quick service options that are spread throughout.

What Can You Find In Isle of Berk?

The Isle of Berk immerse guests into the world of Dreamwork’s ‘How To Train Your Dragon’. Upon entering through the portal, you are met with towering stone statues of a Viking and a dragon. In this land, you’ll find 30 animatronic dragons, as well as three rides and a live stage show. You will also meet characters from the film, including Hiccup, Astrid, Ruffnut, Tuffnut, Gobber, and of course, Toothless himself. Don’t forget to keep an eye out for adorable baby dragons who will play a game of “Toothless Says”.

The three rides in Isle of Berk consist of Hiccup’s Wing Gliders, Dragon Racer’s Rally, and Fyre Drill. There is also the live stage show “The Untrainable Dragon”, which is unlike any theme park stage show. In “The Untrainable Dragon”, the Vikings encounter a new troublesome dragon that is causing mayhem in the village. Hiccup, Toothless, Gobber, and Astrid must find a way to calm the dragon before it causes more destruction. The show features dance and musical numbers, but best of all, Hiccup and Toothless will soar over the audience during the show. This is a must-see!

Dining options in Isle of Berk includes the Mead Hall, which also happens to be the tallest building in the land. Mead Hall offers quick service and has a variety meats, fish, sandwiches, desserts, and drinks. Other dining options include Spit Fyre Grill and Hooligan’s Grog & Gruel where you can find the Instagramable Dragon Fire Chicken Spire mac-and-cheese cone.

What Can You Find In The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic?

Universal Orlando’s Epic Universe Grand Opening. Photo: Wendy Lee Szany.

While Universal Orlando and Islands of Adventure already house both Diagon Alley and Hogsmead, there is still much to explore in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Epic Universe. As you walk through the towering wand-topped portal, you suddenly find yourself in 1920s Paris. This land is connected to the “Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them” franchise, where magical creatures from the film can be found in various shop windows and entertainment.

The main attraction in this land is the “Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry” ride. For the first time, guests will be able to experience the Métro-Floo as they walk through the green tunnel. Stepping through the mist, you’ll find yourself at the British Ministry of Magic.

The official synopsis for “Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry” is:

Travel by Métro-Floo from Paris to the British Ministry of Magic™ where Dolores Umbridge™ is about to stand trial. Board a lift and join Harry, Ron, and Hermione as you journey deep into the Ministry’s many departments. Thrilling adventure, fantastic beasts, and unexplored mystery await in Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry™.

This ride queue is the most impressive of all lands at Epic Universe. As you come out of the Métro-Floo tunnels, you’re met with the massive atrium of the British Ministry of Magic and its many floors of offices. At the center stands the Fountain of Magical Brethren. The sight is truly impressive. Proceeding through the line queue, you’ll walk through the Magical Archives library, the Aurors’ locker room, and Dolores Umbridge’s office.

For the ride itself, guests will board the magical omnidirectional lift as it makes its way to Umbridge’s trial. As she attempts to escape, the lift, along with Harry, Hermione, and Ron, give chase throughout the Ministry. The ride has a combination of screens and practice sets, similar to “Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey”. What sets this ride apart is the seamless flow from screen to set and the detailed animatronics found throughout. The immersive storytelling combined with the technologies used for Battle at the Ministry make this attraction a must for Harry Potter fans.

Within this land, you can find “Cirque de Arcanus”, a live show featuring cirque acts and fantastic beasts in large puppetry form. With special effects and intricate set designs, guests will feel surrounded by the magic of the Wizarding World.

There is much to explore within the wizarding city of Paris. Arm yourself with an interactive wand and put your skills to the test with the many spell-casting spots in front of the storefronts throughout this land. Stop by Café L’air De La Sirène for a butterbeer crepe

What Can You Find In Dark Universe?

Universal Orlando's Epic Universe Grand Opening. Photo: Wendy Lee Szany.
Universal Orlando’s Epic Universe Grand Opening. Photo: Wendy Lee Szany.

It’s Alive! As guests step through the portal for Dark Universe, they are transported to the village of Darkmoor, a haunting village where the classic Universal Monsters roam. The gothic decor and fog effects sets the mood. The crackles and hum of electricity from Victoria Frankenstein’s experiments can be heard throughout. As you travel further into the land, you’ll come across Frankenstein Manor, a dark castle looming over Darkmoor. The manor houses the main attraction of Dark Universe, “Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment”.

The official synopsis for “Monsters Unchained” is:

Dr. Victoria Frankenstein continues the work of her ancestors deep below the family estate. A demonstration of her experiments to control monsters goes awry when Dracula leads a revolt of enraged monsters including The Wolf Man, The Mummy, the Creature from the Black Lagoon and more.

Monsters Unchained has two pre-shows, with the latter showing off the incredible animatronics of Victoria Frankenstein and Frankenstein’s Monster 2.0. Their movements are fluid and lifelike, giving a guest just a taste of what they’ll encounter on the ride.

The ride vehicle operates very similarly to “Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey,” but the vehicle’s movement is more extreme and intense than Forbidden Journey. In comparison, Monsters Unchain boasts more practice sets and animatronics than screenings. As the ride vehicles, operated by Igor, navigates through the catacombs deep beneath the manor, guests will come face-to-face with Dracula and his brides, the Mummy, and Creature from the Black Lagoon. These larger-than-life animatronics are extremely detailed and truly frightening as the ride vehicle brings you within inches of them.

There is so much happening on this ride, and each seat offers a slightly different view as certain animatronic figures pop out at a different timing. Monsters Unchained is the best ride in Epic Universe, and worth experiencing multiple times as you will definitely notice something you different than the previous ride.

Aside from Monsters Unchained, there’s also the spinning rollercoaster “Curse of the Werewolf”. The ride vehicle travels at 37 MPH on back and forth motion while the seat vehicles spin. The spinning motion can vary depending on the weight distribution of each ride vehicle. The coaster is thrilling but nowhere as intense as Stardust Racers or even Hiccup’s Wing Gliders.

Official synopsis for “Curse of the Werewolf”:

Maleva, leader of The Guild of Mystics, welcomes you to a secluded wagon camp. Here you’re warned of the creatures who prowl the deep woods. Before long you’re riding Curse of the Werewolf – surrounded by glowing eyes and gnashing teeth, you’ll spin and weave through the forest as you attempt to escape a pack of werewolves.

Guests can encounter characters such as Igor as he roams around Darkmoor, or meet Frankenstein and the Bride in their designated meet and greet area.

Dining options include the Burning Blade Tavern, which has a rotating windmill that is lit ablaze seversal times a day. The Tavern serves up a variety of burgers, chicken, small bites, and beverage.

What Can You Find in Super Nintendo World?

Super Nintendo World first made its way to Universal Studios Hollywood in 2023. This is where you can find “Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge”. What sets the Super Nintendo World apart in Epic Universe is a brand new area featuring Donkey Kong. This marks the debut of Donkey Kong Country in the United States.

Donkey Kong Country transports guests into the jungle where you can find “Mine-Cart Madness”. Board the mine cart and enter the Golden Temple to protect the Golden Banana, but watch out for the rickety tracks.

    Official synopsis for Mine-Cart Madness:

It’s up to you to help Donkey Kong protect the Golden Banana on Mine-Cart Madness™. Enter the majestic Golden Temple, board your mine cart and take off in this thrilling family coaster. Speeding through the mine, you’ll appear to jump across gaps in the track and perform other eye-popping feats from the Donkey Kong Country video games.

As the mine carts rushes through the Golden Temple, you’ll notice some of the tracks have collapsed but there is no stopping. The mine cart makes leaps over the missing tracks, and makes this ride exciting and sometimes a little scary. The ride will not only take you through the temple, but also over water and through the jungle. For those visiting the park with a Power-Up band or tracking your progress through Universal Orlando app, this is how you can acquire the Golden Banana stamp.

While you’re in Donkey Kong Country, stop by The Bubbly Barrel stall to try the DK Crush Float, which is served with a pineapple banana soft serve with a waffle cone. It sounds extremely sugary but it’s just the right level of sweetness and very refreshing. You have the option to get it with or without the souvenir DK barrel mug.

The other new attraction at Super Nintendo World is Yoshi’s Adventure. This is a much slower paced ride than Mine-Cart Madness, perfect for all-ages. The track also gives you a scenic aerial view of Super Nintendo World. Guests will board a Yoshi ride vehicle as it takes you through various scenes in search of all three Yoshi Eggs. Each vehicle is equipped with three egg-shaped buttons. When you spot a blue, pink, or green Yoshi Egg, press the corresponding color button. This is how you can acquire the Golden Egg stamp.

The rides at Super Nintendo World are fun but not as detailed or thrilling as the other lands. Still, this land is extremely interactive, especially if you have a Power-Up Band to collect stamps and play mini-games.

You can find several food options including Toadstool Cafe, which boasts wide variety from pasta to soups to sandwiches. There are a ton of seating and a perfect way to escape the heat on a hot day.

Epic Universe is changing the game when it comes to theme parks. The attention to detail in each land has elevated the experience. When you’re in any specific land, you forget that you’re a part of a larger theme park. Whether you step into the Isle of Berk or Dark Universe, you’re immediately enveloped by the theming and decor. You won’t even notice the other portals towers from the other lands even though they stand tall. For the most part, each land is filled with interactive experiences so if there are plenty to do aside from the rides and shows.

After a sizzle reel of upcoming movies, which included The Russo Brothers‘ ‘The Electric State‘, Adam Sandler’s ‘Happy Gilmore 2’, and Rian Johnson‘s ‘Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery’, Oscar winner Ben Affleck took the stage to discuss his new crime thriller ‘RIP’.

Set in Miami and based on true events, the film re-teams Affleck with his ‘Air‘ co-star Matt Damon, and his ‘Smokin’ Aces‘ director Joe Carnahan. Affleck explained that a “RIP” is when cops keep the money that they find at a crime scene and the movie looks at what people will do for money.

“When I talked to Joe Carnahan, who directed it, he said this is going to be like ‘Heat’ meets ‘Training Day’. So, I said, “Kind of like ‘The Town‘?” But he really outdid himself and it’s spectacular. He co-wrote it; he directed it and he really wanted to make this a genre classic like ‘Se7en’ or ‘The French Connection’. A fun, engaging ride that keeps you guessing. It’s a compelling, complicated human drama that also hues to these elements of cinema that people have loved forever.”

Affleck also discussed his continued collaborations with Damon.

“It’s the seventh movie that Matt Damon and my company, Artists Equity, has made and it really is, in a lot of ways, the most important for us because we’ve found some really exciting partners who are really interested in not just what has been but what could be at Netflix.”

Affleck concluded by showing a brief scene from the movie that involved Affleck and Damon’s cop characters discovering millions of dollars’ worth of hidden cash during a bust and must decide how to proceed.

While Oscar winning director Guillermo del Toro was unable to attend, he did send a video message shot at his “mancave” in Los Angeles called Bleak House. The director introduced footage from his upcoming film ‘Frankenstein’ and was fittingly surrounded by his vast collection of Frankenstein memorabilia.

Guillermo Del Toro had this to say before screening the footage:

“I wanted to introduce a small taste, a teaser, for my film ‘Frankenstein’. This film has been on my mind since I was a child, for fifty years. I’ve been trying to make it for 20-25 years. In fact, some people may even think I am a little bit obsessed with Frankenstein. They probably would be right. You see, over the decades, the character has fused with my soul in a way that it has become an autobiography. It doesn’t get more personal than this. I hope you enjoy this small look at ‘Frankenstein’.”

The footage included several scenes, and we were given our first look at Oscar Isaac as Dr. Frankenstein and Jacob Elordi as the monster.

    New Netflix TV Series:

Tina Fey was on hand to present a short scene from her new series ‘The Four Seasons’, which is an adaption of the 1981 film starring Alan Alda and the actress confessed her love for the original.

“In 1981, when I was eleven years old, I saw a movie that really shaped my idea of what my future, grown-up life could be like. It was written and directed by the great Alan Alda, and it’s called ‘The Four Seasons’. If you’ve never seen the original movie, it has a very simple premise. It follows a group of old friends, three couples, over four vacations. We never see them at home. We never see them at work, we just see how their lives change over a year by hanging out with them on vacation.”

Fey explained that she had received Alda’s permission to adapt the film and then talked about the cast that she assembled for the new series.

“All that was left to do was to assemble a cast of beloved comedy actors that could create the same warm, human vibe of the original. I’m proud to say our cast is very cozy. They’re not just my old friends, they’re yours as well. Steve Carell, Will Forte, me, Kerri Kinney-Silver, the beautiful Italian actor Marco Calvani, Broadway’s Erika Henningsen and Academy Award nominee Colman Domingo.”

We then screened a short scene from the series featuring Fey, Will Forte and Steve Carrell.

During last year’s Netflix is a Joke Festival, comedian John Mulaney hosted a weeklong talk show titled ‘Everybody’s in L.A. with John Mulaney‘. The series was so popular that Netflix is bringing it back starting March 12th with a new episode dropping once a week for 12 consecutive weeks.

Mulaney explained how the new series came together.

“So, Netflix and I discussed this summer not being done with the show and I was thrilled to do that. It was a total blast, and it was one of those shows that neither Netflix nor I really needed to do. I never wanted to host a talk show and they were getting out of the talk show game. So, it was the perfect moment to do this.”

Mulaney’s sidekick on the series is veteran character actor Richard Kind, and the host explained how that came to be.

“Richard Kind will be joining me again for this series. Richard and I met through a real-life ‘Baby Reindeer’ scenario. He kept showing up where I worked, and I decided to incorporate him into my life.”

Also coming in 2025 is ‘Black Rabbit’, which stars Jason Bateman and Jude Law as estranged brothers. The audience screened footage from the series, which sees Law’s character thriving as a bar owner, only to have his brother’s (Bateman) return send his perfect life spinning out of control.

Netflix announced the long-awaited season 3 of ‘Squid Games’ will premiere June 27th. In addition to new photos, the audience also screened a scene from the upcoming season that involved a game where contestants pick a ball out of a machine that is either blue or red. Once you have collected your ball, the contestants are separated into two different groups, but they don’t know why.

Finally, after screening some behind-the-scenes footage from the making of season 5 of ‘Stranger Things’, creators Matt and Ross Duffer took to the stage to discuss the upcoming final season of the groundbreaking series.

Ross Duffer: “That was the world’s very first behind-the-scenes look at the fifth and final season of Stranger Things. We spent a full year filming this season. By the end, we’d captured over 650 hours of footage. So, this is our biggest and most ambitious season yet. It’s like eight blockbuster movies. It’s insane.”

Matt Duffer: “At the same time, we think it’s our most personal story. It was super intense and emotional to film for us and for our actors. We’ve been making this show together for almost ten years. There was a lot of crying. There was so much crying. The show means so much to all of us, and everyone put their hearts and souls into it. We hope and believe that passion will translate to the screen.”

But ‘Stranger Things’ fans should not be too sad that the series is ending, as Matt Duffer did hint at a possible future for the franchise.

“But while this might be the end of the story for Mike, Hopper, Dustin, Lucas, Eleven, and the others, it’s not goodbye for ‘Stranger Things’. There are many more stories to tell.”

  • First Look at Christian Bale and more in ‘The Bride!’

    Preview:

    • Maggie Gyllenhaal has offered a first look at Christian Bale and Jessie Buckley in ‘The Bride!’.
    • The new take on ‘Frankenstein’ is now in production.
    • Peter Sarsgaard, Annette Bening and Penélope Cruz co-star.

Much like fellow literary horror icon Dracula, Mary Shelley’s Dr. Frankenstein and the not-so-ethical doctor’s ill-fated creation are seemingly always the subject of adaptations for screens big and small.

The latest to try their hand at some fresh re-telling is Maggie Gyllenhaal, who proved she had great directorial chops to go along with her acting career when she made intense drama ‘The Lost Daughter’ in 2021 and it went on to score three Oscar nominations.

But ‘The Bride!’ (for that is the title her latest, exclamation point and all) should certainly prove to be something quite different from Gyllenhaal, and she’s now taken to Instagram to offer up first looks at stars Christian Bale and Jessie Buckley via the movie’s camera tests.

What’s the Story of ‘The Bride!’?

    'The Bride!'

Here is the logline for the movie: A lonely Frankenstein (Bale) travels to 1930s Chicago to seek the aid of Dr. Euphronius in creating a companion for himself. The two reinvigorate a murdered young woman and the Bride (Buckley) is born. She is beyond what either of them intended, igniting a combustible romance, the attention of the police, and a wild and radical social movement.

Who Else is in ‘The Bride!’?

    Jessie Buckley in 'The Bride!'

Gyllenhaal’s cast also includes Peter Sarsgaard, Annette Bening, Julianne Hough and Penélope Cruz.

From the looks of this, Bale is going the typically committed route (we’re sure that’s prosthetics, though he’d probably agree to die and get stitched back together in the service of his art given half the chance) and Buckley’s look is also striking.

It’s a seemingly refreshing version of the ‘Bride of Frankenstein’ story, written by the director and picked up for distribution by Warner Bros. And that title –– whether or not it keeps the exclamation point –– indicates a solid role for Buckley, who did such great work in ‘The Lost Daughter’.

  • ‘Lisa Frankenstein’ Interview: Zelda Williams and Diablo Cody

Opening in theaters on February 9th is the new horror comedy ‘Lisa Frankenstein,’ which was written by Oscar-winner Diablo Cody (‘Juno’), directed by Zelda Williams (‘Shrimp’), and stars Kathryn Newton (‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’).

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with director Zelda Williams and screenwriter Diablo Cody about their work on ‘Lisa Frankenstein,’ developing the screenplay, the themes Williams wanted to explore as a filmmaker, casting Kathryn Newton, and their experience working together on the project.

You can read the full interview below or click on the video player above to watch the interview.

Moviefone: To begin with, Diablo, can you talk about developing the screenplay and is it true that you took inspiration from 80’s movies like ‘Weird Science’?

Diablo Cody: That is right. I had always been interested in the Frankenstein myth and particularly the idea of telling it from a female perspective of sort of creating the perfect guy. ‘Weird Science’ had a real impact on me as a child because of the idea of these two guys sitting and creating the perfect woman. I remember thinking to myself, “What does the other side of that look like?” So, I wrote this. I had always had the seed of this movie germinating inside of me. But then when the pandemic hit in 2020, I desperately needed to escape, as did many of us. So, at night, I would dive into the script and get to be in that world, and it was a nice escape for me.

MF: Zelda, what was your first reaction to Diablo’s screenplay and what were some of the themes you were excited to explore as a filmmaker?

Zelda Williams: I mean, surprise and joy. Because also the reason I got the script, they had completely buried the lead that it was from her. So, I got this, I opened my email, and I was like, “Diablo Cody, what on Earth?” and opened it. I read it so fast and responded to her so quickly. I think I was most excited about the tonal mashup with the violence, the camp and love being this central theme to it. It was so nice to see all of that together. Whereas usually I would be very much into that, even alone. But all of them in one script is a rare and wonderful delicacy.

MF: Can you talk about casting Kathryn Newton and what it was like to collaborate with her on this project?

ZW: Oh, I was so excited when she came along. I’d seen ‘Freaky,’ but I hadn’t seen ‘The Map of Tiny Perfect Things.’ Then I watched that, and I just found this incredible depth of character but also willingness. She’s so fearless, and comedy does really require that. It requires you to be willing to look silly and to do ridiculous things. I’ve never met someone, especially in her age range, that at that time was so excited to be that way. She tackled it 110% every single day.

MF: Diablo, what was your experience like working with Zelda on this movie?

DC: It’s the best. I mean, Zelda’s the best. I have been impressed with her since the day I met her. I’ve been fortunate enough in my career to have a lot of great collaborations with great directors, but this is up there. So, I feel really just fortunate and I’m glad that I entrusted my baby to her.

MF: Finally, to follow up on something you just said, does it feel like you’re handing your baby over to someone else to parent when you give your script to another filmmaker to direct?

DC: Yes, that’s exactly what it feels like. Jonathan Demme once said to me, we were talking about the movie (‘Ricki and the Flash’) we were making, and he kept saying, “We literally are like parents where all we talk about is the baby.” I said, “Yup, that’s what it is, and it’s pretty great.”

What is the Plot of ‘Lisa Frankenstein’?

In 1989, a misunderstood teenage goth girl named Lisa Swallows (Kathryn Newton) reanimates a handsome corpse (Cole Sprouse) from the Victorian era during a lightning storm and starts to rebuild him into the man of her dreams by using a broken tanning machine in her garage. After going through a playfully horrific transformation, the romantic duo embarks on a murderous journey to find true love, happiness, and a few missing body parts along the way.

    • Oscar Isaac, Mia Goth and Christoph Waltz are all aboard the Netflix film.

Mary Shelley’s classic, literary horror-genre-goosing novel ‘Frankenstein’ is something that filmmaker Guillermo del Toro has had on his To-Do list for more than a decade.

And early last year, it looked like he was finally making some progress, since word arrived that talks were under way with Andrew Garfield, Oscar Isaac and Mia Goth to star.

Now, Deadline reports that Garfield has had to drop out, just one more ripple effect of last year’s strikes still impacting schedules. But the good news for the director is that Jacob Elordi, whose star is on the rise thanks to ‘Saltburn’ and ‘Priscilla’, is now lined up to step in.

Shelly’s literary game-changer follows Victor Frankenstein (Isaac), a brilliant but egotistical scientist who brings a creature (Elordi) to life in a monstrous experiment that ultimately leads to the undoing of both the creator and his tragic creation.

Del Toro is writing, directing and producing alongside J. Miles Dale, who served as a producer on del Toro’s ‘Cabinet of Curiosities’ for Netflix, where this new movie is also based.

What has del Toro said about ‘Frankenstein’ in the past?

Director Guillermo del Toro for ‘Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio.’

“The only way to do the Shelley novel is to actually do a four-hour miniseries,” he told MTV in 2008. “But I think there are permutations in which you can tell the myth in a different way.”

Obviously, he’s clearly found a way to make the story work as a movie –– and has now cracked the script.

It’ll need to be something fresh –– Shelley’s book has been adapted many times in many ways for all sorts of media. But we can trust del Toro will bring his distinctive stamp to the story of the doctor who reanimates dead bodies and the creature he creates that faces hatred from the local villagers.

Quite what he intends to do with it is a mystery for now, but he may choose to tweak it in a modern-day setting or stick to more of a period feel. Either way, this is certainly something we know this director can do.

And hopefully, Netflix will give the result some proper big-screen treatment before it ends up on the company’s servers, and we’re glad del Toro is getting to tick another long-held dream film off his list.

As for Elordi, he’s worked on Paul Schrader’s next film, ‘Oh Canada’ and indie drama ‘On Swift Horses’. He’ll also be back for the next season of HBO’s ‘Euphoria’, due in 2025.
