One of the biggest issues with ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s‘ was that it had a hard time delivering on the scares while giving the long-time fans the lore drops and Easter eggs that they wanted. Many newcomers to the franchise ended up feeling alienated and like they needed to research in order to fully understand what was happening. This time around, Blumhouse was sure to make a movie that everyone could enjoy, no matter how much they know about the Freddy’s games, books, and comics. They also did not hold back when it comes to the scares, offering up a truly terrifying film at times.

    Story and Direction

‘Five Nights at Freddy’s 2’ is a tall order for director Emma Tammi and writer/creator Scott Cawthon, especially when you consider what a massive fan base this franchise has. There are many things that need to be done right, but it is a delicate balance to make sure that newcomers are able to understand the story without leaving feeling confused and frustrated. This movie pulls that off tenfold.

'Five Nights at Freddy’s 2', directed by Emma Tammi. Photo: Universal Pictures.

Now that the groundwork has been laid with the previous film, ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s 2’ is able to hit the ground running from the start – and it never lets up. The story moves at a fast, but digestible, pace. It never wastes its time and it crams in a lot of Easter Eggs from the games that will have long-time fans jumping up and down in their seats. At the same time, it goes harder in terms of scares. There are multiple, perfectly timed, jump scares and the new villain is downright creepy.

    Cast and Performances

(L to R) Abby (Piper Rubio), Mike (Josh Hutcherson) and Vanessa (Elizabeth Lail) in' Five Nights at Freddy’s 2', directed by Emma Tammi. Photo: Universal Pictures.

While the animatronics are not only cool to look at, but extremely impressive, if the human aspect of these films doesn’t work, the movie falls apart. Josh Hutcherson once again proves why he is a great lead actor. He is a very important part of the story, essentially being the eyes and ears for the audience, and portraying the character that everyone plays in the video games. His chemistry with Piper Rubio, who plays Abby, is not only believable, it is unmatched.

Piper Rubio has a lot of ground to cover in ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s 2’. She plays a very important role and does so brilliantly. Abby’s is Mike’s younger sister and both Hutcherson and Rubio do a wonderful job of showcasing that, rather than making it feel like a father-daughter relationship.

Elizabeth Lail in 'Five Nights at Freddy's 2'. Photo: Universal Pictures.

Without giving too much away, this script gives Elizabeth Lail a lot to chew on, right from the first moment we see her. Considering that she is William Afton’s (Matthew Lillard) daughter, it should come as no surprise that she has a lot of trauma to deal with. She delivers a stellar performance, especially in that final scene.

Mckenna Grace doesn’t have a lot of screentime, but when she is on screen, she steals the show.

    Final Thoughts

Matthew Lillard in 'Five Nights at Freddy’s 2', directed by Emma Tammi. Photo: Universal Pictures.

‘Five Nights at Freddy’s 2’ gives fans exactly what they want, without making newcomers feel like they have no idea what is going on. This movie is equal parts scary and entertaining. The animatronics are nothing less than impressive and while certain characters could have used more time on screen (looking at you Skeet Ulrich) it was all for a good reason.

There is a massive cliffhanger at the end of the movie that will have viewers begging for more. Of course, there is also a tease at the mid-credit point and at the end of the credits. While Blumhouse has not announced a third film, it would be pretty shocking if a ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s 3’ isn’t greenlit.

‘Five Nights at Freddy’s 2’ receives 80 out of 100.

What is the plot of ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s 2’?

One year since the supernatural nightmare at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, the stories about what transpired there have been twisted into a campy local legend, inspiring the town’s first ever Fazfest. With the truth about what transpired kept from her, Abby sneaks out to reconnect with Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy, setting into motion a terrifying series of events that will reveal dark secrets about the true origin of Freddy’s, and unleash a long-forgotten horror hidden away for decades.

Who is in the cast of ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s 2’?

    • Josh Hutcherson as Mike
    • Elizabeth Lail as Vanessa
    • Piper Rubio as Abby
    • Matthew Lillard as William Afton
    • Mckenna Grace as Lisa
    • Teo Briones as Alex

Universal Studios Orlando’s Horror Nights 2025. Photo: Wendy Lee Szany.

In this Western horrorscape, demons are clawing their way out of Hell to possess unsuspecting humans, and it’s up to bounty hunters Hatchet and Chain to stop them. While this house had some cool light effects and set pieces, such as the demon in the fireplace, the story was not as cohesive as it could have been. However, it is still a fun house and a good original creation.

    Official synopsis:

In this Old West town, all hell is breaking loose. Red-hot lava demons are trying to possess everyone, melting everything in their path. Your only hope: Hatchet and Chains with their mystical weapons.

    9. Grave of Flesh

Universal Studios Orlando’s Horror Nights 2025. Photo: Wendy Lee Szany.

It is always a treat to see a horror classic like Jason at Halloween Horror Nights. This house is filled with various Jasons from across the ‘Friday the 13th’ film franchise, and even a special appearance of Pamela Vorhees. The scares in the first half of the maze felt too few and spread out, and it wasn’t until the second half of the maze that the numerous Jasons jumped out at guests relentlessly. It was a good maze, but not as great as some of the other Jason mazes from the past.

    Official Synopsis:

Come face-to-face with the iconic horror villain Jason Voorhees. Step into the terrifying world of this silent killer. Flee through the woods and into his sinister shack. Enter the summer camp where his gruesome legend began. Jason is back, and nothing can save you now!

Inspired by Nordic mythology, this haunted house has stunning set designs. Following the tragic story about the protector of the land who became corrupt. Her vengeful spirit and her monsters taunt guests through various settings, such as tunnels covered in runes. This beautifully designed house offers up a great story and good jump scares.

    Official Synopsis:

In a remote northern village, a wicked being rises from the dead, bringing a horde of monsters and demons from the fjords to wreak havoc on the townspeople. Try to escape the belly of the beast.

    6. ‘Fallout

Based on the Prime Video series and video game of the same name, this maze does a great job taking guests through various locations from the show and encounters with characters such as Lucy, Maximus, and Cooper Howard/ the Ghoul. While not particularly scary, the production design of the haunted house was a feast for the eyes. Keep your eyes peeled for an Easter Egg tease for season 2.

    Official Synopsis:

Face your fears in post-apocalyptic LA, devastated by nuclear war, based on the hit show and game franchise “Fallout.” You’ll travel into the vaults and be attacked by raiders alongside Lucy. Even for non-WWE fans, it’s cool to be so immersed in this world, especially with the screen tunnel featuring wrestling personalities.

    Official Synopsis:

Do dolls creep you out? If so, this house dials the scares up to 100. Guests are shrunk down to doll-size as they traverse through this twisted dollhouse filled with unnatural recreations of mutilated dolls and toys. Ever wondered what it’s like to be in the ‘Toy Story’ villain Sid’s bedroom? This is it. Every corner is a mangled nightmare waiting for its next victim. Great jump scares, even greater horrific images.

    Official Synopsis:

You’re about to become doll-sized and witness the unnatural creations of a twisted little girl. You’ll be hunted by burnt fashion dolls, toys she’s melded together and undead horrors in her dollhouse.

    3. ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s

Freddy and the Gang Are Dying to Meet You. You wouldn’t last one night at Freddy’s, let alone five. You’re about to be hunted by deadly animatronics Freddy, Bonnie, Chica and Foxy as you flee through creepy, abandoned hallways.

Universal Studios Orlando’s Horror Nights 2025. Photo: Wendy Lee Szany.

A terrifying maze featuring Art the Clown and his many gruesome kill scenes from the movies. This is the most grotesque of all ten houses. Art the Clown pops out at every corner, and each kill scene gets more gruesome. If you’re sensitive to smells, a portion of this maze is filled with the stink of feces. Guests are also put through a “blood bath” where water rains down on them in a tunnel. There is an option for a “dry path” if you prefer not to get wet, but what’s the fun in that?

    Official Synopsis:

Nothing can prepare you for this grisly haunted house based on all three of Damien Leone’s Terrifier films. Try your luck against the sadistic Art the Clown in his twisted funhouse. Witness Art’s gleefully grotesque handiwork of torture. You’ll be left literally dripping with terror and drenched with fear. It’s a whole new level of gore!

The standout of the event is ‘El Artista: A Spanish Haunting’. It takes place in 19th-century Spain, and the story follows an artist who is tormented inside his manor as he desperately seeks inspiration. This is the most hauntingly beautiful house, including a demon flying on a zipline above guests in the courtyard.

Aside from the incredible production design, each creature encountered are so unique – like the monster made out of book pages. The maze is evenly paced with jump scares, and has the best story out of the original mazes.

    Official Synopsis:

In 19th century Spain, a tortured artist moves to an isolated country manor to seek inspiration. Instead, the art comes alive and possesses him. You’re about to be part of the permanent exhibition.

HHN 34 also includes five original haunted houses, including ‘Galkin: Monsters of the North’, inspired by ancient Nordic mythology and creatures, and ‘Grave of the Flesh’, where guests are invited to their own funeral.

‘Hatchet and Chain: Demon Bounty Hunters’ is reminiscent of ‘Slaughter Sinema 2’, where demons are crawling their way out of Hell to possess unsuspecting humans while melting everything in their path.

‘Dolls: Let’s Play Dead’ is not one to be missed. Guests become “doll-sized” as they enter this haunted house, and will encounter a variety of the most unnatural re-creations of dolls and toys. Everything, from set designs to scareactors, works cohesively in this twisted dollhouse.

The standout of the original houses is ‘El Artista: A Spanish Haunting’. Taking place in 19th-century Spain, an artist is tormented inside his manor as he desperately seeks inspiration. This is the most hauntingly beautiful house, including a demon flying above guests in the courtyard.

This year’s event includes four scare zones: ‘The Origins of Horror,’ ‘Mutations: Toxic Twenties,’ ‘Masquerade: Dance with Death,’ and ‘The Cat Lady of Crooked Lane.’ Each zone offers a unique theme and its own assembly of scare-actors taunting guests as they make their way through the park.

One year has passed since the supernatural nightmare at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. The stories about what transpired there have been twisted into a campy local legend, inspiring the town’s first ever Fazfest.

Former security guard Mike (Hutcherson) and police officer Vanessa (Elizabeth Lail) have kept the truth from Mike’s 11-year-old sister, Abby (Piper Rubio), concerning the fate of her animatronic friends.

But when Abby sneaks out to reconnect with Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy, it will set into motion a terrifying series of events, revealing dark secrets about the true origin of Freddy’s, and unleashing a long–forgotten horror hidden away for decades.

What happened at the ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s 2’ Comic-Con panel?

With Tammi and Blum taking the stage first, Tammi offered up word that we can expect more than three times the amount of animatronics this time around.

Briones plays a new character, named Alex, who is a videographer with web show about paranormal activity. He’ll get more than he bargains for!

Rubio’s Abby has developed an interest in robotics since her encounters with Freddy and co. last time. She’s lonely, and has no friends to talk to… So she makes some.

As for Hutcherson’s Mike, he’s still trying to live something close to a normal life. This is what the actor had to say:

“Mike and Abby went through a lot… Mike is just wanting to get back to somewhat of a normal life, but that just can’t happen in the ‘Freddy’s’ world. Mike is in a way, trying to fake it till you make it without fully working through all that stuff that happened, and then it happens to him again! Poor Mike.”

Skeet Ulrich is also in the cast for the new movie, and he arrived on stage. He had this to say about his character:

“I play somebody with a very particular and specific past and somebody with a very deep emotional tie to what’s going on.”

Blum, for his part, promises that if audiences embrace the new movie as much as the first, he and his team are excited to make a third.

When will ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s 2’ be in theaters?

The sequel will be scaring up more animatronic horror on December 5th.

Since it was first announced as in development back in 2023, Sony and Nintendo’s live-action adaptation of the latter’s hugely popular video game series ‘The Legend of Zelda’ has been quiet.

Partly that’s because chosen director Wes Ball was a little busy making ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’, but things have now taken a big step forward with word that the movie’s team have found their main duo ––  Bo Bragason will play Zelda, while Benjamin Evan Ainsworth has won the role of Link.

The ‘Legend of Zelda’ game franchise, created by Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka, first debuted via Nintendo in 1986. The game follows the elf-like warrior Link and Princess Zelda as they fight to save the magical land of Hyrule from Ganon, an evil warlord-turned-demon king.

Across the decades, the franchise has sustained as one of Nintendo’s most iconic, selling over 150 million units with multiple installments across various gaming consoles, one of the most famous behind 1998’s ‘The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.’

It has also spawned animated TV adaptations. With so much source material to draw upon, there’s big prospects for a sequel. But fans will have to wait and see which elements or storylines from the game will make it into a movie.

While Derek Connolly, who worked on the ‘Jurassic World’ movie trilogy, wrote the first draft of the script, it has since been through the hands of T.S. Nowlin, who collaborated with Ball on several ‘Maze Runner’ movies.

Who else is working on the movie adaptation?

The film will be produced by Miyamoto, who these days is Representative Director and Fellow of Nintendo, and Avi Arad, Chairman of Arad Productions Inc, who has a number of big movies on his resume.

Here’s what Miyamoto previously posted to twitter about the movie:

“This is Miyamoto. I have been working on the live-action film of ‘The Legend of Zelda’ for many years now with Avi Arad-san, who has produced many mega hit films. It will take time until its completion, but I hope you look forward to seeing it.”

This isn’t the first time someone has looked to adapt the ‘Zelda’ games. There was chatter that Nintendo would work on a series for Netflix, but that has so far not come to pass.

Speculation on casting for the project has been rampant, with many fans taking to social media to name ‘Euphoria’s Hunter Schafer as their pick for the part of Zelda. Deadline’s sources have said that Mason Thames and Brady Hepner were two other finalists for the role of Link.

His next project to see screens will be crime thriller ‘Blood on Snow’, from director Cary Joji Fukunaga, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Eva Green and Benedict Cumberbatch. We’re still waiting to learn when it’ll be in theaters.

  • ‘The Beekeeper’ Interview: Josh Hutcherson and David Ayer

    U0n7ZLU6

Opening in theaters on January 12th is the new action thriller ‘The Beekeeper,’ which was directed by David Ayer (‘End of Watch,’ ‘Suicide Squad’) and stars Jason Statham (‘Expend4bles’), Josh Hutcherson (‘Five Nights at Freddy’s’) and Academy Award winner Jeremy Irons (‘Justice League’).

(L to R) Josh Hutcherson and director David Ayer talk ‘The Beekeeper.’

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Josh Hutcherson and director David Ayer about their work on ‘The Beekeeper,’ their first reaction to the screenplay, exploring the mythology of the Beekeepers, Ayer’s approach to the action sequences, Hutcherson’s wild character, and working with Jeremy Irons and Jason Statham.

You can read the full interview below or click on the video player above to watch the interviews.

Moviefone: To begin with, David, what was your first reaction to the screenplay and the opportunity to explore the mythology of the Beekeepers?

David Ayer: I mean, you nailed it right there. When I read this script, it was this fascinating look into the world of the beekeepers. It was the right amount of, just enough to know what’s going on, and not so much that you don’t lose the magic and mystery of it. In that script, I saw an amazing role for Jason, he came attached to it, but also, I saw an opportunity for me to do something a little bit different. It’s really a classic action, escapist, thrill ride. Normally I do a lot of dark drama, and so to have the opportunity to make a fun movie that I know an audience is going to love was something I couldn’t say no to.

MF: The allegory of the movie seems to be that the Danforth Corporation has kicked the hornet’s nest, and Adam Clay (Statham) is the bee that is going to sting them. Do you agree with that?

DA: That’s it. There’s a lot of cool allegories and this very interesting mythology behind bees, and this idea of taking care of the hive, taking care of society, protecting the hive and protecting society. Jason was the perfect person to express that mythology because he is so iconic, and he does feel so larger than life that it really helps elevate this movie into something I think none of us were expecting. It’s hard to make a movie, and it’s hard to make a good movie, and you never know how these things are going to come together. I trusted the script and I trusted Jason and I trusted myself, because again, it’s like a new language for me, like a real true genre picture that’s fun and doesn’t take itself too seriously. To find those new muscles as a director was a fantastic exercise for me.

MF: Josh, what was your first reaction to reading about your character in the script? Why did you want to play him and what was your approach?

Josh Hutcherson: When I first read this script and read a bit about Derek, I was surprised that I was the person that they were calling. It’s a departure for me. He’s a scumbag. He’s a very powerful, rich crypto bro who is out of his mind on drugs and alcohol and just spiraling. I jumped at the bit to play it. I think that it was something for me that was a big departure and really taking a swing at something different. It was so much fun to do. As far as the approach goes, I mean, David and I just had a lot of conversations about who is Derek at his core, what does he really want, what’s his life been like with his mom, with his dad and his money? We landed on this idea that he’s wildly insecure and trying to prove to his family that he is powerful, and that he is valuable. Because he’s never had to deal with any consequences his entire life, and had no accountability for anything, it creates a monster. As the film progresses and the walls start closing in on him, he becomes more and more unhinged and out of control.

MF: Can you talk about the illegal business that your character oversees and how it affects his family?

JH: He has this little side business that he’s set up that basically is a call center, multiple call centers, that go and scam, especially elderly people out of their savings and bank accounts. It’s a nasty business. It’s gross. I think that in my mind, how I justified him starting this business is that it’s twofold. One is that he’s doing it out of a sense of rebellion because he must live a certain kind of life and keep things clean because of his family situation. Then the other part is I think that he, and this happens a lot, I think, when people have so much money, they dehumanize people, and you don’t view them as actual human beings. So, I think those two factors allowed him to create this thing that turns into an absolute monster.

MF: David, can you talk about the unusual partnership that Derek and Wallace have together and working with Josh and Jeremy Irons?

DA: Josh is a real actor and just, I have to say it, Derek is not Josh, he’s playing a role, that’s not who he is in real life. He’s a very nice guy. To take this wild, crazy character with the green jackets and the snakeskin and the crazy hair and then pair him with Wallace Westwyld as envisioned by Jeremy Irons, it’s a great alchemy. It’s a great relationship they have, and it helps make the bad guy world a lot more fun.

MF: Wallace seems reluctant to help Derek with his Beekeeper problem. Was the character written that way originally, or is that something Jeremy Irons brought to the role?

DA: It’s something we worked on with Jeremy and it was also in the script too, this idea of, what happens when you get compromised, what happens when you say yes to the wrong thing, and then do you have to keep saying yes? If you do, what does that mean? You can feel that he knows what is happening isn’t right, but you can also feel how trapped he is by the circumstances.

MF: Josh, how would you describe Derek’s relationship with Wallace?

JH: Jeremy Irons plays Wallace Westwyld, and he’s kind of like Derek’s right-hand man sort of. He does Derek’s bidding, protects him in ways too. He’s a former CIA director, and now he’s kind of been placed here to watch after me, but I treat him like absolute garbage. I’m a total douchebag to him. It’s a fun dynamic, especially, I mean, having Jeremy Irons be this guy that I’m treating like trash. It was a lot of fun. It’s a very good dynamic. David gave me a lot of space to play and improv and kind of throw a bunch of stuff at him, so we had a good time.

MF: Most of your scenes in the film are with Jeremy Irons, what was he like to have him as a scene partner?

JH: He’s amazing. I mean, he’s just got such a weight to him, and his voice and his presence is just intense. But he’s the nicest guy, very funny, and very relaxed. But when they say action, he turns it on, and he clicks it into gear.

MF: Josh, what was your experience like being on a David Ayer set and working with him as a director?

JH: David runs an amazing set. He’s extremely collaborative. He works very fast, and he really marries the worlds of action and choreography and stunt work and big set pieces with more intimate, personal, grounded character stuff. He does that incredibly. For me, having the confidence with myself to play this character that’s so different for me, I needed to just give myself over to it and trust David and let my instincts kind of take me to where they may. It worked out. I loved working with David. He’s fantastic.

MF: David, can you talk about crafting the action sequences and working with Jason Statham?

DA: So, we had this great stunt coordinator and choreographer, Jeremy Marinas, who comes from the 87eleven school, and his understanding of human kinetics and how people just move was educational for me. Then with Jason, I mean, he’s an action icon, he’s a legend. He does his own stunts, so it’s interesting because you present him a scene, he’s the guy that’s going to do everything, and he has a loud vote, he has a voice. He’s probably forgotten more about action than I’ve ever known. So, it was really challenging, I always bring my A game to set and Jason taught me that there’s an A+ game when it comes to action.

MF: Finally, Josh, you don’t have many scenes in the movie with Jason Statham. Did it feel at times like you were making two separate movies?

JH: The truth is, I think I only have one scene with Jason in the entire movie. But just watching him, because there were many days where I was around and they were shooting other things, just watching him work, the guy he doesn’t miss. He’s so on top of it and consistent, professional and the choreography that he keeps in his head, and the fact that he’s able to do that, and have his lines and nail his mark every time. He’s a fine, fine, fine-tuned machine.

As the estate behind A.A. Milne’s Winnie the Pooh stories can no doubt attest, having your beloved, child-friendly characters enter the public domain is not a lot of fun. Especially as there are filmmakers just waiting for the chance to turn cute, sweet creations into murderous monsters.

Last year’s ‘Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey’ was pretty dreadful, scoring 3% on Rotten Tomatoes, but it earned $4 million from a $100,000 budget (and it really shows), so director Rhys Frake-Waterfield has already worked on a sequel to keep his momentum going.

And now one of Disney’s most iconic creations, Mickey Mouse, is suffering the same fate, turning from an (admittedly weird) cute version into a murder-happy terror.

What does it mean for characters to enter the public domain?

    1928's 'Steamboat Willie.'
    1928’s ‘Steamboat Willie.’

Characters such as Winnie the Pooh and, now Mickey Mouse, have a set period of time in which they are the sole copyright of their creators or the company that represents them. The 1928 versions of Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse and other characters appearing in ‘Steamboat Willie’ became public domain as of this past Monday, which means that anyone can now use them to create new material.

But to be clear, it’s those specific versions –– more current incarnations, such as those with Mickey’s more recognizable pants and gloves, are still controlled by Disney, which plans to defend its rights to the full extent of the law.

Here’s what the company said in a statement:

“We will, of course, continue to protect our rights in the more modern versions of Mickey Mouse and other works that remain subject to copyright, and we will work to safeguard against consumer confusion caused by unauthorized uses of Mickey and our other iconic characters.”

So yes, while we’ll see the ‘Steamboat Willie’ Mickey causing chaos on screens, the more up to date one will still be doing his wholesome thing at theme parks and on billions of dollars of merchandise.

What’s happening with the ‘Steamboat Willie’ Mickey?

As of right now, two horror movies (and one horror game) are at different stages.

One is ‘Mickey’s Mouse Trap’, which sees someone sporting a Mickey costume murdering people in a locale that feels very similar to last year’s ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s, with a side of the genre awareness found in movies such as ‘Scream’, with characters discussing tropes.

Directed by Jamie Bailey, the film has a teaser out in the world (see below) and a synopsis: It’s Alex’s 21st birthday, but she’s stuck at the amusement arcade on a late shift so her friends decide to surprise her, but a masked killer dressed as Mickey Mouse decides to play a game of his own with them which she must survive.

Starring Sophie McIntosh, Callum Sywyk, Allegra Nocita, Ben Harris, Damir Kovic, Mackenzie Mills, Nick Biskupek and Simon Phillips, the movie has yet to announce a formal release date but is apparently eyeing March.

Here’s what Bailey said in a statement about the movie:

“We just wanted to have fun with it all. I mean it’s ‘Steamboat Willie’s Mickey Mouse murdering people. It’s ridiculous. We ran with it and had fun doing it and I think it shows.”

Then, we have an untitled movie that looks to retain more of the ‘Steamboat Willie’ concept, albeit with a killer twist.

Steven LaMorte, who has character-borrowing form thanks to making Grinch-inspired horror ‘The Mean One’ is set to direct an untitled horror-comedy based on Mickey’s cartoon debut. In it, a sadistic mouse will torment a group of unsuspecting ferry passengers. Production is set to begin in the spring.

LaMorte said this about his new movie:

“Steamboat Willie has brought joy to generations, but beneath that cheerful exterior lies a potential for pure, unhinged terror. It’s a project I’ve been dreaming of, and I can’t wait to unleash this twisted take on this beloved character to the world. We are doing our due diligence to make sure there’s no question or confusion of what we’re up to. This is our version of a public domain character. It’s a scary thrill ride with heart and humor, based on this character that everybody knows.”

What about the Mickey horror game?

It’s not just the movie side that is making use of Mickey. According to IGN, Nightmare Forge games has announced ‘Infestation 88’, a new 1-4 player survival horror co-op game that aims to infuse nostalgia with scares.

Here’s the synopsis for the game:

“In the year 1988, what was thought to be an outbreak of rodents in various locations morphed into something far more sinister. Sometimes you’ll need to fight, sometimes you’ll need to run, and sometimes you’ll need to hide in a locker. You can set traps and utilize CCTV cameras to try and stay one step ahead of the infestation, and item layouts are randomized in order to help keep matches fresh.”

The game has not announced a formal release date yet, but you can wishlist it on Steam.

  • Live-Action ‘Legend of Zelda’ Movie in Development

    Preview:

    • Nintendo and Sony have a ‘Legend of Zelda’ movie in the works.
    • ‘The Maze Runner’s Wes Ball will direct the movie.
    • The original game landed in 1986 and has become a big sensation.

With ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ proving to be a smash hit in theaters ($1.36 billion and counting), and ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s also successfully mining the video game genre, it was only a matter of time before other game characters made the leap to movie screens.

And with Nintendo’s massive catalogue of potential source materials, other studios are following in Universal’s footsteps hoping to strike it rich.

This time, it’s Sony forging a partnership with the game company, splitting financial input with the game giant for a ‘The Legend of Zelda’ movie, based on the successful series. And unlike ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’, the ‘Zelda’ film will be live-action.

While Derek Connolly, who worked on the ‘Jurassic World’ movie trilogy, is aboard to write the script, there are no details about the storyline for the movie yet, or how it will draw from the games.

The game, created by Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka, and originally launched in 1986, follows the elf-like warrior Link, and magical Princess Zelda, as they fight to save the magical land of Hyrule from Ganon, an evil warlord turned demon king.

It has spawned multiple entries across different platforms and animated TV adaptations. With so much source material to draw upon, there’s big prospects for a sequel. But fans will have to wait and see which elements or storylines from the game will make it into a movie.

Who else is working on the movie adaptation?

Wes Ball, who directed the ‘Maze Runner’ movies and has other experience with existing material, as he’s the filmmaker behind the latest ‘Planet of the Apes’ film.

The film will be produced by Miyamoto, who these days is Representative Director and Fellow of Nintendo, and Avi Arad, Chairman of Arad Productions Inc, who has a number of big movies on his resume.

Here’s what Miyamoto posted to twitter about the movie:

“This is Miyamoto. I have been working on the live-action film of ‘The Legend of Zelda’ for many years now with Avi Arad-san, who has produced many mega hit films. It will take time until its completion, but I hope you look forward to seeing it.”

This isn’t the first time someone has looked to adapt the ‘Zelda’ games. There was chatter that Nintendo would work on a series for Netflix, but that has so far not come to pass.

When will ‘The Legend of Zelda’ be in theaters?

As of now, the film doesn’t yet have a release date. Which is hardly surprising, since it doesn’t have a cast in place, or a single foot of film shot.

    • Horror title ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s’ opened big at the box office.
    • It has seen a second-weekend slump but is still making money.
    • There is already talk of a sequel.

Clearly video game adaptations are the new big thing. After decades in the critical and box office wilderness, the genre has become successful in the last couple of years, and 2023 is looking like a banner year, what with ‘The Super Mario Bros.’ and now ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s’.

The horror movie, adapted from the popular point-and-click game series launched back in 2014 by creator Scott Hawthorn, has been taking in stacks of money at the domestic and international box office.

In case you didn’t see the movie (and given that it was released simultaneously in theaters and on streaming service Peacock, lots of people did), ‘Freddy’s’ follows Mike (Josh Hutcherson), a troubled young man caring for his 10-year-old sister Abby (Piper Rubio), and haunted by the unsolved disappearance of his younger brother more than a decade before.

Recently fired and desperate for work so that he can keep custody of Abby, Mike agrees to take a position as a night security guard at an abandoned theme restaurant: Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria.

But Mike soon discovers that nothing at Freddy’s is what it seems. With the aid of Vanessa Shelly, a local police officer (Elizabeth Lail), Mike’s nights at Freddy’s will lead him into unexplainable encounters with the supernatural and drag him into the black heart of an unspeakable nightmare.

‘Five Nights at Freddy’s’: What happened with its opening weekend?

'Five Nights at Freddy's,' from Universal Pictures and Blumhouse in association with Striker Entertainment.
‘Five Nights at Freddy’s,’ from Universal Pictures and Blumhouse in association with Striker Entertainment.

The first weekend launch for ‘Freddy’s –– even given the release on Peacock –– proved to be a huge one, driven by the games’ fanbase and word of mouth despite middling reviews.

It opened to $80 million, far outstripping predictions and making it successful thanks to its typically thrifty Blumhouse budget of $20 million.

The title is now the highest-grossing horror movie of the year, ahead of the likes of ‘M3GAN’ and ‘The Nun II’. Globally, it has now passed $217 million.

Jason Blum, boss of Blumhouse, thanked fans via social media for the turnout:

How did ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s’ fare in its second weekend?

'Five Nights at Freddy's,' from Universal Pictures and Blumhouse in association with Striker Entertainment.
‘Five Nights at Freddy’s,’ from Universal Pictures and Blumhouse in association with Striker Entertainment.

‘Freddy’s’ took something of a tumble in its second weekend, dropping 76% to $19.4 million, but that isn’t stopping its momentum. It’s the second-highest grossing video game adaptation this year, though has quite a way to go to beat ‘Mario’, which passed the billion dollar mark (both titles were released by Universal, so we’re sure the studio is happy either way).

    So why the drop?

Here’s what Franchise Entertainment Research boss David A. Gross told Variety of the second weekend figure:

“‘Five Nights at Freddy’s’ is crashing in its second weekend of simultaneous streaming. The two viewing options compete with each other. An exclusive theatrical run generates the greatest total box office and then elevates the film and builds anticipation of the streaming premiere that follows it.”

That said, it was helped by weak competition this past weekend, with two indie releases failing to make the top five.

And it took home another accolade, becoming the first horror movie to repeat at the top of the box office after a Halloween release since 1991’s ‘The People Under the Stairs’.

It won’t surprise anyone to learn that the success means sequels are very likely. Nothing is official yet, but ‘Freddy’s’ co-writer/director Emma Tammi said this to Variety before the movie opened:

“We’re definitely excited to keep making more movies in this world, should we be lucky enough to do that.”
