    • Natasha Lyonne is the latest addition to ‘The Fantastic Four’.
    • Her character is a mystery for now.
    • The movie will be out in July 2025.

We’re always glad to see Natasha Lyonne show up in a movie or TV series –– her particular brand of crackly-voiced sarcasm usually helps make whatever it is better.

Marvel clearly feels that way, as according to Deadline, Lyonne is now joining ‘The Fantastic Four’, the company’s big chance to add its First Family to its Cinematic Universe. And Lyonne seems to fit right in with an eclectic ensemble that is already raising eyebrows –– and expectations.

The movie, which finally see Marvel’s most famous comic book superheroes (though X-Men fans might argue that) join the company’s sprawling Cinematic Universe, is mostly being kept under wraps.

Marvel has not said anything about the story, though its first imagery suggests a period setting.

The main title characters are being played by Pedro Pascal (Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic), Vanessa Kirby (Sue Storm/Invisible Woman), Joseph Quinn (Johnny Storm/Human Torch) and Ebon Moss-Bacharach (Ben Grimm/The Thing).

In addition to Lyonne, the eclectic ensemble for this one includes British actor Ralph Ineson (as planet eating troublemaker Galactus), ‘Ozark’s Julia Garner (as a version of the Silver Surfer), Paul Walter Hauser and John Malkovich (both of whom are without confirmed characters at this point).

As for who Lyonne’s playing? That has also not yet been revealed. So take your own guess! A gender-swapped Wilhelmina Lumpkin? Voicing H.E.R.B.I.E. the robot? (Probably not). Whatever it turns out to be, we’re interested.

The actor has been busy of late, and not just performing. She co-created and starred in brain-twisting Netflix series ‘Russian Doll’ and, more recently, was a producer and star of crime series ‘Poker Face’, in which she played a woman blessed/cursed with the ability to know when people are lying to her and uses that to solve crimes.

While ‘Russian Doll’ appears to be in limbo, ‘Poker Face’ will return for a second season. In addition to the shows, Lyonne is lending her voice to the animated ‘The Smurfs Musical’ (due February 14th next year), and has a role in Taika Waititi’s new film, sci-fi drama ‘Klara and the Sun’.

Happy Valentine’s Day from Marvel! The studio has decided to set fans hearts at rest after months (in some cases years) of casting rumours and officially announced the cast for its ‘Fantastic Four’ movie –– at least, the introduction of the famous super-team into the MCU.

In a new tweet featuring illustrated versions of the cast in character, the studio revealed that ‘The Last of Us’/‘Mandalorian’ star Pedro Pascal, ‘The Crown’s Vanessa Kirby, ‘Stranger ThingsJoseph Quinn and ‘The Bear’s Ebon Moss-Bachrach have nabbed the lead roles. None of them are particularly big surprises, as their names have cropped up in the swirling rumor storm.

Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman, Johnny Storm/The Human Torch and Ben Grimm/The Thing are key players in the pages of Marvel, known as the “First Family”, and introduced in 1961. They are among most anticipated characters (alongside the X-Men) to be included in the sprawling Marvel Cinematic Universe.

They’re canonically exposed to galactic radiation and end up cursed/blessed (depending on how you view it) with strange abilities. Reed can stretch his body in a variety of ways, Sue can turn invisible and generate forcefields, Johnny’s body becomes engulfed in flame (and he can fly), while Grimm becomes a rock-covered, incredibly strong creature.

And to be clear here, Pascal will be Reed, Kirby’s playing Sue, Quinn is taking the role of Johnny and Moss-Bachrach will be Ben.

They’ve been brought to screens before –– an unauthorized Roger Corman version floats around the internet after being traded on bootleg videos years ago, and then there were the Fox efforts, 2005’s ‘Fantastic Four’ and 2007 sequel ‘Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer’. They were followed by the dark, gritty and unsuccessful reboot in 2015.

  • SAG-AFTRA Strike Negotiations Stall

    • The latest talks between the striking actors’ union and the studio representatives have ended without much progress.
    • The actors are seeking a similar new deal to what the writers recently secured, albeit with their own extra points.
    • Studio representative body the AMPTP claims that the gap between the parties is “too great” right now.

Just when it looked like there was hope for an end to the actors’ strike following the resolution of the writers’ industrial action (the new contract for writers was officially ratified by 99% of the WGA membership on Monday), some cold water was thrown by news yesterday that performers’ union SAG-AFTRA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers that represents studios were “too far apart” on talks for their own deal.

The actors have now been officially on strike since July 14th, essentially bringing Hollywood production in the States and elsewhere in the world to a standstill with the impact felt in shut down movies, delayed release dates and a shaken-up TV schedule, networks filling fall slots with reality shows and series that had already been in production.

And, as has been the case throughout the strike, the two sides are waging a war of words to present their side of negotiations.

Here’s what SAG-AFTRA’s leadership told members in its latest release:

“We have negotiated with them in good faith, despite the fact that last week they presented an offer that was, shockingly, worth less than they proposed before the strike began. These companies refuse to protect performers from being replaced by AI, they refuse to increase your wages to keep up with inflation, and they refuse to share a tiny portion of the immense revenue YOUR work generates for them. The companies are using the same failed strategy they tried to inflict on the WGA –– putting out misleading information in an attempt to fool our members into abandoning our solidarity and putting pressure on our negotiators. But, just like the writers, our members are smarter than that and will not be fooled.”

The actors’ union has been pushing for various new deal points, including protection against the use of AI to replace some performers and an 11% increase in minimum payments (by comparison, both the Directors Guild and the writers secured 5).

AMPTP put out its own statement on the talks

WGA + SAG-AFTRA members walk the line at Paramount on Sept. 20.
WGA + SAG-AFTRA members walk the line at Paramount on Sept. 20. Photo courtesy of SAG-AFTRA.

The alliance offered its usual publicity blast to explain its side of the matter:

“SAG-AFTRA’s current offer included what it characterized as a viewership bonus that, by itself, would cost more than $800 million per year – which would create an untenable economic burden. SAG-AFTRA presented few, if any, moves on the numerous remaining open items. After meaningful conversations, it is clear that the gap between the AMPTP and SAG-AFTRA is too great, and conversations are no longer moving us in a productive direction.”

We would expect this back-and-forth to continue for some time, with little forward movement (and it feels like the studios are once more the main sticking point). So, if you were hoping that your favorite show or that movie you were anticipating would be back on the schedule soon, we’d say patience is a virtue.

  • Robert Downey Jr. was Almost Cast as Doctor Doom

Robert Downey Jr. as the man in the metal mask threatening the likes of Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans and Michael Chiklis? According to Jon Favreau, the actor who saw his career skyrocket a few years later with ‘Iron Man’, almost ended up playing Doctor Doom in 2005’s ‘Fantastic Four’.

    16227

Of course, history ended up going a very different way: Julian McMahon ended up playing Victor Von Doom in Tim Story’s superhero movie and Robert Downey Jr. saw his career skyrocket to new heights playing Tony Stark in the first film Marvel Cinematic Universe.

    24396

The revelation came from ‘Iron Man’ director Jon Favreau, who sat down with Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige for a video looking back at the making of the 2008 movie.

Says Favreau in the video (which you can watch above),

“I remember you had all met with him already for like Doctor Doom or something on another project. I think he had come through on maybe ‘Fantastic Four,’ so everybody sort of knew who he was.”

    Fantastic future?

It’s fun to speculate on what might have happened with Downey and the ‘Fantastic Four’ movies had he ended up in the role. Would he have made more of an impact than McMahon (who admittedly came back for the sequel)? Almost certainly. Might it have turned those ‘Fantastic Four’ movies into a hugely successful franchise and spared us all the gloomy 2015 reboot? Less certain.

It’s unlikely that Downey Jr. would have enjoyed the same freedom and collaboration that he had with Favreau and the scrappier, still-an-independent company Marvel. Back in 2005, ‘Fantastic Four’ was a tentpole for 20th Century Fox and we doubt the riskier shooting style would have been embraced. In the same video, Favreau opens up about both the re-writing process of the film and how RDJ’s casting unlocked ‘Iron Man’ for him and his team.

    Here’s what he says,

“Once it was him, that’s when my life got a lot easier, because he understood. He understood the voice of the character. And then one by one, people were just signing on board because now it became something interesting.”

Downey’s casting was a domino that then led to opportunity to add Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeff Bridges, Paul Bettany and more, and the rest, as they say, was history. The MCU was born and would go on to earn more than $29.5 billion at the box office alone.

Had someone else ended up as Tony Stark (historically, Tom Cruise was circling the role years before Marvel’s version), who knows whether the movie would have taken off to the same degree. So perhaps we are living in the best timeline when it comes to that history.

Marvel, of course, is producing its own take on the ‘Fantastic Four,’ with ‘WandaVision’s Matt Shakman directing and casting rumors flying thick and fast –– currently Margot Robbie, Adam Driver and Paul Mescal are those being talked about, but nothing has been officially confirmed. With Comic-Con next month, we’re expecting to learn more.

  • Director Matt Shakman Gives An Update on ‘Fantastic Four’ Timeline

    Marvel Studio’s ‘Fantastic Four.'
    Marvel Studio’s ‘Fantastic Four.’

Ever since the announcement of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Multiverse Saga (well… maybe even beforehand, let’s be honest), fans have indulged in MCU parlor games of speculation, where even non-news can, in its own perverse way, be considered news.

Castings deferred, production dates moved or extended, and theatrical release dates shifted — these are all clues from the beyond, tea leaves or puzzle pieces (depending on your metaphor of choice) to be sifted through.

Of course, several Phase Four films (most notably ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ and ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’) have offered up big hints about the unfolding direction of the MCU’s sprawling, multi-film narrative canvas.

But with things officially shifting into Phase Five with the impending release of ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,’ what can fans reasonably expect, looking out further on the horizon, with regards to the hotly anticipated return of the MCU’s first family, the Fantastic Four?

Director Matt Shakman Confirms ‘Fantastic Four’ Shooting Timeline

Director Matt Shakman, who turned in superlative, Emmy-nominated worked on ‘WandaVision,’ gave a bit of insight on things in a conversation with Collider, noting that filming on ‘Fantastic Four’ wouldn’t commence until “Early next year.”

In and of itself, in a vacuum, that might not seem like a big deal. But, along with 2024’s ‘Deadpool 3,’ Shakman’s film will not only be tasked with reintroducing beloved comic characters within the context of the MCU, but also feeding into 2025’s ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’ and the following year’s ‘Avengers: Secret Wars.’

The former, set to be helmed by Shawn Levy, made news for confirming Hugh Jackman’s return as James “Logan” Howlett/Wolverine. And, of course, stars Ryan Reynolds and Jackman have continued to stoke the embers of that free media with a goodnatured online rivalry/bro-fest.

The casting of ‘Fantastic Four’s Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm (last embodied on the big screen by Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Bell, respectively, in director Josh Trank’s 2015 effort) would therefore seem to require some significant star power. Shakman, in his chat with Collider, noted that nothing was yet firm and that any casting rumors circulating online were just that — rumors.

The ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ casting of John Krasinski as an Earth-838 version of Richards seemed, in its own way, a savvy potential trial balloon of sorts. Social media buzzed in advance of the film’s release (some fans weighing in positively, others crying foul, unable to see beyond Krasinski’s role of Jim Halpert), and the specifics of the Earth-838 revelation garnered big in-theater reactions with opening weekend audiences.

Multiverse Saga Allows Producer Kevin Feige a Multitude of Casting Options

Producer Kevin Feige is a masterful showman and public face for the record-smashing Marvel Studios productions. And with the Multiverse Saga, he has a story series custom-built for sleight of hand and media puppet-mastery. In this sense, Marvel seems poised to potentially have its cake and eat it too.

With Jonathan Majors locked in as multiversal adversary Kang the Conqueror and making his debut in ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,’ it seems a safe bet that, whatever exact source material Feige and company choose to most lean into for the aforementioned ‘The Kang Dynasty’ and ‘Secret Wars,’ it will embrace maximum (controlled) chaos.

One wouldn’t be surprised, necessarily, to see Krasinski pop up as Richards — or even Teller. Opposite and in addition to, of course, another performer. So when Shakman says casting rumors are gossip, he’s not lying. Just expect that statement to also remain evergreen for the next couple years.

  • Jamie Bell Was ‘Bitterly Disappointed’ by ‘Fantastic Four,’ Too

Dior Homme : Front Row - Paris Fashion Week - Menswear Spring/Summer 2018Two years after the “Fantastic Four” reboot famously flamed out with both fans and critics, star Jamie Bell is reflecting on what went wrong — and says that he really was really disappointed with the flick, too.

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Bell chatted about his role as Ben Grimm, a.k.a. The Thing, and admitted that he still doesn’t really understand how the film got so far off track. Reports from the time alleged that director Josh Trank basically lost his mind while shooting, trying to control every aspect of his actors’ performances down to their blinking, and pushing for a moody tone that the source material didn’t support. The production was reportedly further derailed when studio 20th Century Fox stepped in to change the story, turning what mess Trank already had into something even more incoherent.

While Bell didn’t discuss any of those alleged events specifically, you can read between the lines of his diplomatic comments to gather that he wasn’t exactly happy with how the production went, either. Here’s what he told LAT:

There were several things on that movie I was clearly not privy to because I’m just an actor and I just do my stuff on set. But with something like that, everything starts with the best of intentions. A production begins with the idea to make something that’s unique and original and with integrity. I think the film really strived towards those goals. I don’t know what happened between the launch of the voyage and the arrival. I think we were all bitterly disappointed with that film. But that’s just the way it goes sometimes.

That “bitterly disappointed” line is a little heartbreaking, especially since it seems like the actor had such high hopes for the project . At least Bell and costar Kate Mara, who tied the knot earlier this summer, were able to find love in the midst of making a bad movie. Guess there’s a bright side to everything.

  • Here’s Proof That ‘Fantastic Four’ and ‘The Fly’ Are the Same Movie

It may not be an obvious connection to make, but Couch Tomato makes it clear in its new “24 Reasons” comparison video: “The Fly” and “Fantastic Four” are indeed the exact same movie.

The 1986 20th Century Fox movie starring Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis, is compared to the 2005 20th Century Fox movie starring Ioan Gruffudd and Jessica Alba, which has come under renewed scrutiny thanks to the 2015 “Fantastic Four” reboot. This educational, 3 minute, 40-second video includes side-by-side visual comparisons and insights like this:

There’s this girl with a vagina made of magnets and she’s stuck between two guys with peni made of metal. On one side, her romantic relationship with her boss is coming to an end. On the other hand, she’s got a thing for mullets, so she starts falling for this scientist she’s working with. It’s been said that a mullet alone could get you from like first or second base, but if you’re trying to slide into home, both of you might have to get tipsy first.”

Cue shots of lame bosses, mullets and alcohol consumption, in both movies. (Side note: Is “peni” really accepted as plural for “penis”?) Anyway, we’re convinced. These movies are identical twins. Watch and judge for yourself:

  • ‘Fantastic Four’ Director Reacts to Bad Reviews in Deleted Tweet

    Fantastic Four poster

The new “Fantastic Four” movie, which currently has only a 10% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, reportedly had set tensions between director Josh Trank and Fox executives, and The Hollywood Reporter said producers Simon Kinberg and Hutch Parker stepped in to finish the movie with reshoots just a few months before opening.

Perhaps that’s what Josh was referencing in a tweet he sent out August 6, the day before his movie’s official opening; the message was promptly deleted — but not before the Internet saved it for posterity.

Josh Trank has yet to respond, tweet anything new, or go for the classic “I was hacked.”

This is just the latest unfortunate bit of news for the movie. F4 was attacked by some fans for casting Michael B. Jordan as a black Johnny Storm, Kate Mara faced stupid questions about her short hair and sexy toes, Miles Teller just got bashed by Esquire (the cast all tweeted in his defense), and Jamie Bell was finally dragged into the silliness when asked about The Thing’s penis on “Watch What Happens Live.”

It’s possible all the insane chatter will just make viewers curious to see “Fantastic Four” and perhaps fans will be pleasantly surprised if it doesn’t turn out to be the new “Ishtar.” But it sounds like the franchise may be cursed … unless Marvel can save it?

  • Bryan Singer Teases ‘Natural’ ‘X-Men’ and ‘Fantastic Four’ Crossover

Fans have embraced Bryan Singer‘s “X-Men” movies (so far), but what about “The Fantastic Four”?

The new reboot comes out on August 7 and the franchises are tied not only through Marvel but also producer/writer Simon Kinberg. Bryan Singer recently talked to Yahoo Movies about “X-Men: Days of Future Past – The Rogue Cut” and spoke more about “X-Men: Apocalypse,” but he also weighed in on the idea of an X-Men/Fantastic Four crossover. Long story short, it sounds like if both “Apocalypse” and “Fantastic Four” do well (with the burden really F4) then it may happen since there’s “a mechanism” to do it, involving time, and “those ideas are in play.”

In Yahoo’s video, Bryan answered a series of fan questions, including if there would be another “X-Men” movie. Bryan emphasized focusing on “an expansion of the universe” with, potentially, “individual characters having their own films.” But he said he’s sure we haven’t seen the last “X-Men.” Right after that, he addressed the “Fantastic Four” crossover idea:

That would be a natural mashup, because they’re both ensemble films and there is a mechanism by which to do it. I don’t want to give it away. It deals a lot with time. That’s all I’m going to say. We would have to see how the films turn out. How this film [Apocalypse] turns out, how Fantastic Four plays, to really understand what kind of desire [is out there] and how that would really work. I think to just say you’re going to do it is kind of a mistake. I think you have to see how the films evolve before you make that decision to completely commit to that. But there are those ideas in play.”

Do you think an X-Men/Fantastic Four crossover sounds like a good idea, depending on the characters in focus?
