Ryan Gosling will star for directing team Daniels’ latest.
The untitled sci-fi comedy will follow their Oscar-winning ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’.
Universal is backing the film.
UPDATE! Not so fast, we’re afraid. Variety reports that while Gosling was certainly in the midst of deal talks for the movie, that old problem of scheduling issues has reared its head, and he’s no longer involved. Boo!
Gosling will lead the ensemble cast for the mysterious new movie from the unique directors and producer Jonathan Wang, with Universal locking the filmmakers into a deal even before ‘Everything Everywhere’ secured its awards glory.

As with their previous film, Kwan and Scheinert are keeping their cards close to their chest. But the former did tell Collider that it’ll be: “fun sci-fi, action comedy with a big heart. Very existential. All those things that you would hope that one of our movies would be. One of the reasons why it’s taking so long is because what we’re feeling and what we’re hearing from the world is very complex and really nuanced, and there’s so much paradox. To kind of reconcile all those things and put them into one movie, it takes time.”
So… yes… We’ll have to wait and see what their inventive brains have spawned this time.
When will the Daniels’ new movie be in theaters?
Fortunately, we won’t have to wait forever: Universal has scheduled the movie for release on November 19, 2027.
In honor of Curtis’ new movie, ‘Freakier Friday‘ which is a sequel to ‘Freaky Friday’ reuniting her with Lindsay Lohan and opening in theaters on August 8th, Moviefone is counting down the 20 best films of Jamie Lee Curtis’ long and impressive career, including her latest.
Two decades after surviving a massacre on October 31, 1978, former baby sitter Laurie Strode (Curtis) finds herself hunted by persistent knife-wielder Michael Myers. Laurie now lives in Northern California under an assumed name, where she works as the headmistress of a private school. But it’s not far enough to escape Myers, who soon discovers her whereabouts. As Halloween descends upon Laurie’s peaceful community, a feeling of dread weighs upon her — with good reason.
A 1939 test pilot asks his best friend to use him as a guinea pig for a cryogenics experiment. Daniel McCormick (Mel Gibson) wants to be frozen for a year so that he doesn’t have to watch his love lying in a coma. The next thing Daniel knows is that he’s been awoken in 1992.
Three laborers on a Northern California marijuana plantation (Billy Bob Thornton, Hank Azaria and Ryan Phillippe) become increasingly paranoid when they learn that their boss has been murdered. They know enough to run, taking with them enough of the crop to pay them for services rendered. Hooking up with go-between Lucy (Kelly Lynch) in the next town, they plot their next move.
The nightmare isn’t over as unstoppable killer Michael Myers escapes from Laurie Strode’s (Curtis) trap to continue his ritual bloodbath. Injured and taken to the hospital, Laurie fights through the pain as she inspires residents of Haddonfield, to rise up against Myers. Taking matters into their own hands, the Strode women and other survivors form a vigilante mob to hunt down Michael and end his reign of terror once and for all.

Megan Turner (Curtis), a rookie NYC cop, foils an armed robbery on her first day and then engages in a cat-and-mouse game with one of the witnesses (Ron Silver) who becomes obsessed with her.
History — make that high school — may repeat itself when Marni (Kristen Bell) learns that Joanna (Odette Annable), the mean girl from her past, is set to be her sister-in-law. Before the wedding bells toll, Marni must show her brother (James Wolk) that a tiger doesn’t change its stripes. On Marni’s side is her mother (Curtis), while Joanna’s backed by her wealthy aunt (Sigourney Weaver).
A British spy (Pierce Brosnan) is banished to Panama after having an affair with an ambassador’s mistress. Directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, collectively known as Daniels, the film is a hilarious and big-hearted sci-fi action adventure about an exhausted Chinese American woman (Michelle Yeoh) who can’t seem to finish her taxes.

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of sitting down in-person with Academy Award winners Ke Huy Quan and Ariana DeBose to talk about their work on ‘Love Hurts’, their first reactions to the screenplay and their characters, working together, the action sequences, collaborating with director Jonathan Eusebio, and if the movie is a love story or a revenge film.

Moviefone: To begin with, Ke, what was your first reaction to the screenplay, and did you recognize right away that this would be a perfect role for you to play?
Ke Huy Quan: No. When I read the script, I liked the script, but I just couldn’t see myself as Marvin Gable. I think it’s because over the years I was never offered the leading role. I’m so accustomed to forgetting about getting the job and auditioning for minor characters. I think because it’s been like that for so long, in some ways I’ve been conditioned to think that I’m not deserving to be number one on the card. So, when I read this, I couldn’t connect to it. I couldn’t see myself as Marvin Gable, and the producers, 87 North, they were very persistent, and I was so confused, and I reached out to my favorite filmmaker, (Steven) Spielberg, and he was so gracious with his time. I told him about the story, I told him that they offered me the lead, and this is a Universal Studios picture. I said, “What do you think? Should I do this?” Very quickly he said, “Ke, this is incredible. You should do this.” Suddenly, I’m like, “Oh wow, he thinks I’m perfect for this.” Then I went in and met with our creative team, and through that conversation I realized that one, they were trying to create a different kind of action hero, because I’m so accustomed to seeing movies with (Arnold) Schwarzenegger and (Sylvester) Stallone and Jason Statham. They don’t look like me, but they were trying to change the status quo with a new kind of action hero that looks like me, that doesn’t look lethal at all until you mess with him, and then you really find out how badass he is. Immediately I was just fascinated, and I began to change my own internal narrative. Now I’m beginning to say, “Oh, I can be the action hero. I can be the number one,” and that is what’s so thrilling about this entire process, this entire production. That’s incredible.
MF: Ariana, what was your first reaction to the screenplay and what excited you about playing this character?
Ariana DeBose: Oh, I thought it was a very ambitious little piece. It’s doing many things. There’s a romantic heart to it. It is a full-fledged action flick, but there’re brotherly love. It’s sewing this very fine seam together. It was doing a lot. Then at the heart of it, the backbone of the film was this woman, Rose, who without her you don’t have central conflict in a way. It felt like she was unapologetically just flipping the table and then asking questions later. It’s like she planned up until a certain point and then she’s like, “Whoa, let’s see what happens.” I loved that because I think there comes a point in everyone’s life where they must do that. It’s like a radical acceptance of the unknown and then fly by instinct and see where things fall. I really loved that about her.

MF: Ariana, do you think the movie is a love story or a revenge film, or both?
AD: Both, really. I think there are characters who start out with what they would call a revenge plan and it turns into something else. There’s always something underneath revenge. It’s never one color. It makes it fun as an actor. I look at it as painting. I talk about dance in color too, but acting is also about color. I’m never drawn to a character that is just one color. I don’t really know what to do with that because as people, we have so many multitudes within us. So, for me, those are the characters that I feel very strongly drawn to.
MF: Ariana, director Jonathan Eusebio has a background in fight coordinating, what was it like working with him on the action sequences?
AD: Oh, it was so, so fun. Again, the impetus of all of this was just fun. I remember sitting down with JoJo when we met about the film and he was like, “Are you open to it?” I was like, “I want to do everything that I can myself.” I had a great stunt double, Aisha (Hussain), who was there if something went wrong or if there was something that perhaps I wasn’t equipped to do. I’m very quick to be like, “Nope, that’s not in my wheelhouse. Safety first.” But they’re pretty much most of the things you see in the film, I was able to do myself. In fact, I learned how to drive a Trans-Am. I drove a stick. I learned how to do it in an hour. I’m very proud of that because driving a stick is hard. Yes, I’m a millennial, don’t judge me, but it’s hard. But the fight sequences were an extension of dance for me. I took to this work, this genre in a way that I don’t know that I have had before in some other types of genre films that I’ve explored. So, this one was fun. It was great. We couldn’t do any of it without our incredible stunt team. Every single member. It was just like a big family.

MF: Ariana, you presented Ke Huy Quan with his Oscar when he won Best Supporting Actor for ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’. What was it like to finally work with him on this movie?
AD: Oh, I can tell you, it’s so nice to watch someone through an award season, have a moment like that and then be on set and feel affirmed in all the things that you thought. He’s everything that you think he is. I think we both grew so much on this film. We both got to express different parts of our talent that I don’t know that audiences had been able to see thus far. We worked from a space of real mutual admiration and partnership. I think that’s why we have the film we have regarding the two characters and their connection. But we had a really good time. It was nothing but fun. It’s a feat to get any movie made. It could be hard, but it’s such a rewarding thing when you get to do it with someone you really enjoy and admire.
MF: Finally, Ke, what was it like for you to have an opportunity to work with Ariana on this movie after she presented you with your Academy Award?
KHQ: Come on. When she opened the envelope and announced my name with so much emotion, I was so touched, and I loved her. Since then, when I see her, I always go up and give her a big hug and I say, “Oh, come on, let’s do a movie together.” So, when this came and her name was mentioned for Rose, I immediately said, “Yes, yes, it’s got to be her. Please reach out and give her anything she wants so she says yes.” Of course, we had an incredible time, and I could not have asked for a better partner. Now I see this movie, and I’m so proud of what we have made.

What is the plot of ‘Love Hurts’?
Marvin Gable (Ke Huy Quan) is a successful realtor who’s past as a violent hitman comes back to haunt him when his former partner (Ariana DeBose) reveals that his brother (Daniel Wu) is hunting him.

‘Star Trek: Section 31’ receives 7 out of 10 stars.
Premiering on Paramount+ on January 24th, ‘Star Trek: Section 31’ represents the first ‘Star Trek’ movie produced –– even if it does carry the qualifier of “TV Movie” –– since 2016’s ‘Star Trek: Beyond.’ Which tells you something about the moribund development levels of big screen ‘Trek.’
Instead, it has been left up to the likes of executive producer/overseer Alex Kurtzman to fly the Federation flag on the small screen instead. And ‘Section 31’ marks the first feature-length spin-off from the various series (in this case, ‘Star Trek: Discovery,’ which launched the current televisual incarnation back in 2017 and wrapped up last year). The big question of course is, was it worth taking one of the characters and giving them a showcase?
Will ‘Star Trek: Section 31’ beam your interest aboard?

‘Section 31’ does go some way to answering the question as to whether the current ‘Trek’ TV galaxy can generate solid enough ideas to work as movies, even if this first one does make its debut on the small screen via Paramount’s streaming service. That’s not a knock on the film, and while it might not have the scope and sheen of, say, a Nicholas Meyer movie or something from J.J. Abrams’ lens flare-inflected productions, it’s a burst of knockabout entertainment with solid character work and a tone that veers more towards ‘Mission: Impossible’ than classic ‘Star Trek.’
Indeed, there are ideas and developments here that might have given series creator Gene Roddenberry a conniption fit, even if his show did introduce the concept of the dark mirror universe for ‘Trek,’ playing with the principle years before Marvel and co.’s big-screen multiverses.
And keeping things mostly outside of Federation space means that there’s plenty of latitude for morally ambiguous types to band together for a higher calling. It also doesn’t hurt that it also allows for Michelle Yeoh, who hasn’t had a showcase like this since ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ to show her stuff not just as a dramatic actor but also someone who –– with support from the stunt team –– has the action chops.
Script and Direction

Written by Craig Sweeny from a story originated by Bo Yeon Kim and Erika Lippoldt (all three have experience working on ‘Discovery’), ‘Section 31’ is a darkly humorous chunk of action that also has a few solid ideas at its core, not the least of which is the moral choices of its lead characters.
Not only that, but it lets Yeoh cut loose as Georgiou, fully leaning into the idea of someone who will do anything to achieve her aims (up to and including killing people), but also realizes the weight of her past, particularly when it rudely intrudes on her present gig as an undercover (well, mostly undercover) crime boss.
The script falls into some identifiable traps in places as it has to catch those who didn’t watch much of ‘Discovery’ up on who Georgiou is and how she fits into the mythology, and one or two of the reveals/surprises are signposted in places (if you believe the entire team makes it to the end credits, you’ve clearly never watched anything in this genre). But overall, it works.
Fellow ‘Discovery’ veteran Olatunde Osunsanmi, meanwhile, directs with a light touch, throwing in some visual panache where possible and keeping the tone fun while also delivering on the bigger themes.
‘Star Trek: Section 31’: Performances
With Yeoh the natural focus (and enjoying the spotlight), the movie nevertheless builds some quirky characters around her.

It says something that Yeoh, who these days has an Oscar on her mantle (for ‘Everything Everywhere’), opted to return for more from Georgiou, the conniving, crafty and imperious former ruler of the Terran Empire, who these days slums it working for the ethically questionable secret side of Starfleet. Yeoh brings power and spark to the lead role, bouncing well off the others and delivering some lines with just the right level of acid sarcasm.

Hardwick is sometimes lumbered with playing more of the straight arrow to Yeoh’s character, but he’s also handed enough of a dark past to keep Sahar from feeling stale.

A comedic veteran of the likes of ‘Veep,’ ‘Detroiters’ and ‘Ted Lasso,’ Richardson is the shapeshifting Quasi, and part of the bickering team of operatives dispatched to initially track down Georgiou and convince her to help them stop a major problem.
Richardson’s role is tailored towards his particular brand of nervy, empathetic comedy and he does his usual sterling job as a supporting player.

A mech-head a little too connected to his own technology, Zeph is the brawn of the team, and ‘Pacific Rim’s Kazinsky was a good choice for the role. He can play blustery but also vulnerable when needed and Zeph is a great blend of the two.

One of the little elements of fan service (though they never get in the way of the narrative), Rohl’s character is the future Starfleet captain ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’ fans will know from classic episode ‘Yesterday’s Enterprise.’ Here, she’s younger, but her straight-laced energy (until another side is unleashed) compliments the rest of the team’s wilder ways.

Perhaps the most fascinating character of the bunch, Fuzz is actually something we won’t spoil here. A Vulcan first glimpsed laughing like he’s a Romulan, he’s one of the cleverer inventions for this new movie, and Ruygrok brings a great energy to him.

Will ‘Star Trek: Section 31’ prove there is life in the TV side of the galaxy besides the ongoing series (new ones are on the way, but ‘Strange New Worlds’ is the only current ongoing concern)? It certainly has a vitality and an attitude to it, but it remains to be seen if it’s embraced by fans.
If nothing else, we got another chance to see Michelle Yeoh be a snarky badass.

Jonathan Eusebio is making his directorial debut with the movie.
It hails from David Leitch and Kelly McCormick’s 87North company.
He’s showed up in the likes of Marvel projects (‘Loki’s second season) and fellow Disney+ series ‘American Born Chinese’ and has more movies on the way. He’s now taking the leap into an even more action-orientated sphere as he’s set to star in Universal action movie ‘With Love’.
What’s the story of ‘With Love’?

So far, according to Deadline, the studio has not released any plot details for the new movie, though we do know that Luke Passmore (‘Archenemy’) is writing the latest draft of the script, following work by Josh Stoddard (‘Warrior’) & Matthew Murray.
Given the title, are we to speculate that this could be a riff on Bond movies (as in ‘From Russia With Love’)? Or could it be a blend of rom-com and kick-ass action?
Whatever it turns out to be, this could do for Quan what ‘Nobody’ did for Bob Odenkirk. And he’s already got a leg up since Quan has years of experience as a stunt choreographer.

The new movie comes from 87North, the production company run by ‘Bullet Train’ director David Leitch and wife/producing partner Kelly McCormick. The pair, who have plenty of action filmmaking experience between them (Leitch co-directed ‘John Wick‘ and has also worked on the likes of ‘Atomic Blonde’ and ‘Deadpool 2’, while producing ‘Nobody’, ‘Violent Night’ and more), are shepherding this one as producers.
The ‘Violent Night’ connections continue via the director, Jonathan Eusebio, who has been a colleague of Leitch and McCormick for years. His resume includes stunt coordination or 2nd unit directing experience on movies including the aforementioned Santa thriller plus ‘Deadpool 2’, ‘Black Panther’, ‘Birds of Prey’, and Leitch’s upcoming ‘The Fall Guy’. ‘With Love’ will mark his directorial debut.
He’s just the latest stunt expert to graduate to directing from working with Leitch –– previous examples have included Sam Hargrave, who has since made both the ‘Extraction’ movies for Netflix.
‘With Love’ is at an early stage and doesn’t have a release date set yet, but we will see Quan in the RussoBrothers’ ‘The Electric State’, which should arrive via Netflix this year. And before that, we’ll hear him as the character Han in ‘Kung Fu Panda 4’, due to be released on March 8th.

A couple of weeks ago, Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert took to the stage of the Dolby theatre in Hollywood to claim several Oscars that they’d won for their film ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’, which of course led to speculation about what they’d do for a follow-up.
When news broke yesterday via One Take News that the duo was involved with new ‘Star Wars’ series ‘Skeleton Crew’, some took it to mean that the quirky, unique duo were somehow “selling out’ by working on a Lucasfilm show.
As it turns out, that’s not how it happened at all.
Taking to Instagram, Kwan responded to those concerns. Here’s what he had to say:
”Lol, all of the people @ing us about getting sucked up by the ‘corporate machine’ can chill. These headlines are always misleading. Don’t worry. We aren’t working on a whole series; we guest directed one episode. Jon Watts approached us to do an episode a while ago (before ‘EEAAO’ even came out). We love Jon, love ‘Star Wars,’ love learning new tech, we love meeting new cast and crew, and we needed the days to keep our healthcare (!!!) so it was an easy yes. We shot it last year and had an incredible time working with the most talented cast and crew and I’m excited for you all to see it.”
So, there you have it –– and let’s be honest, the idea of anything directed by the Daniels is something to anticipate. Kwan also specified that whatever the duo does next in the film realm, it’ll be an original project they create. We’re not sure why anyone would have expected the people behind ‘Swiss Army Man’ and ‘Everything Everywhere’ to jump wholeheartedly into the corporate world.
‘Star Wars: Skeleton Crew’ will be premiering on Disney+ in 2023.
Developed by Watts and Jon Favreau and set in the same ‘Star Wars’ timeline as ‘The Mandalorian’, ‘Skeleton Crew’ has largely been under wraps, with only a few details getting out.
The official logline for the series is sparse at this point: “‘Skeleton Crew’ tells the story of four kids who find themselves lost in in the vastness of the galaxy trying to find their way home” and we do know that Watts was working with ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ co-writer Christopher Ford on the scripts.
Jude Law is starring in the series, though we don’t yet know who is playing the youngsters looking to find their way home.
‘Skeleton Crew’ should be hitting Disney+ this year.

Damon Lindelof leaves the ‘Star Wars’ movie he was writing
In less positive ‘Star Wars’ news, Above The Line brings word that Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson are no longer aboard the movie set in the galaxy far, far away that they had been writing.
Lindelof offered a hint that he might have jumped (space)ship at the SXSW festival last week, where he said this to Slashfilm:
”I will just say, that for reasons that I can’t get into on this Sunday morning, on this day, the degree of difficulty is extremely, extremely, extremely high. If it can’t be great, it shouldn’t exist. That’s all I’ll say, because I have the same association with it as you do, which is, it’s the first movie I saw sitting in my dad’s lap, four years old, May of ‘77. I think it’s possible that sometimes when you hold something in such high reverence and esteem, you start to get in the kitchen and you just go, ‘Maybe I shouldn’t be cooking. Maybe I should just be eating.’ We’ll just leave it at that point.”
Lindelof’s original attachment was exciting for genre fans, as the ‘Lost’ veteran had worked on ‘The Leftovers’ and ‘Watchmen’. And though his big screen work hasn’t been as warmly received (‘Star Trek: Into Darkness’, ‘Prometheus’ and ‘Cowboys & Aliens’ included), there was anticipation for how his and Britt-Gibson’s sensibilities might translate to ‘Star Wars’.
Don’t go thinking that this marks another cancelled ‘Star Wars’ project as Disney and Lucasfilm struggle to get their cinematic universe in order. Above The Line’s story also mentions that Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (a documentary filmmaker who has worked in animation and directed episodes of ‘Ms. Marvel’ for Disney+) is still aboard to make the movie.
A new writer is apparently involved in working on the script, though their identity is unknown at this time. And if it all works out, the cameras should be rolling in early 2024 ahead of a December 2025 release.
What we do know is that Star Wars Celebration, the Disney-curated convention around all things ‘Star Wars’, is happening next month in London, and that’s traditionally where Lucasfilm has announced big new movies and TV series. So that’s where audiences should learn the fate of this new movie.
Even that is no guarantee, though, as we’ve had a variety of big announcements –– films from Patty Jenkins or Kevin Feige, for example –– that have simply never come to pass, lost in a mire of conflicting schedules and long development.
Other movies we’re still waiting for updates include Rian Johnson’s planned return to the ‘Star Wars’ universe (on hold as he focuses on ‘Knives Out’ sequels), a movie from Taika Waititi that still appears to be happening and one produced by prolific filmmaker Shawn Levy which we’d guess is still being held up by his busy schedule, which includes involvement in the final season of ‘Stranger Things’ and gearing up to direct ‘Deadpool 3’.

‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ has taken this awards season by storm. The A24 movie won big at the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Editing. The film’s leading stars Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan won the Golden Globes for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor respectively, and co-star Jamie Lee Curtis took home the award for Best Supporting Actress. The movie swept at the Screen Actors Guild Awards with Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan being the first Asian actors to win in the film category.

In the wild trailer for ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’, we see Michelle Yeoh (‘Shang-Chi And The Legend Of Ten Rings‘) not just as an exhausted immigrant mother Evelyn Wang, but also as a movie star, a martial artist, and many other variants from different universes.
The film is written and directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, collectively known as “The Daniels” and it is described as “a big-hearted sci-fi adventure about an exhausted Chinese American woman (Michelle Yeoh) who can’t seem to finish her taxes”. And this is just in one universe. Throughout the movie, we meet many variants of the characters from parallel universes as every life choice creates a new alternative universe. Evelyn must work with the Alpha-verse variant Waymond to save the multiverse from Jobu Tupaki, a variant of Evelyn’s daughter, Joy.

We have long enjoyed seeing Michelle Yeoh’s incredible work on the big screen. From executing death-defying stunts in ‘Supercop’ to the poised and formidable Eleanor Young in ‘Crazy Rich Asians’, Yeoh has over 60 movie and television credits under her belt. Playing Evelyn Wang in ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ gave Yeoh a chance to show off her incredible range. In an interview with the LA Times, she speaks about being approached by The Daniels for the role:
“The first thing is you feel like, ‘Finally, thank you. You guys see me, you guys really see, and you’re giving me the opportunity to show that I’m capable of doing all this.’ As an actor, you need the opportunity. You need the role that will help you showcase what you are capable to do.”
Yeoh’s win for outstanding performance by a female actor in a leading role at the Screen Actor’s Guild made her the first Asian woman to win in the film category. She is also the first woman to be identified as Asian to be nominated and win for Best Actress at the 95th Academy Awards.

Many will recognize Ke Huy Quan from his role in the 1984 film ‘Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom’ as Indy’s young companion Short Round. Quan also starred in the 1985 cult classic ‘The Goonies’ as the aspiring inventor Data. So why did Quan stop acting? In an interview with People magazine, the actor said he never intended to stop acting but there weren’t any roles for him.
“I was waiting for the phone to ring, and it rarely did.”
With little to no opportunities, Quan made the difficult decision to step away from acting. Instead, he focused on being behind the camera and became an assistant director and stunt coordinator. After seeing ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ he passion for acting reignited and he auditioned for ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’. Not only did he land the leading role, he also performed his own stunts in the iconic fight scene in the movie armed with only his fanny pack.

The film premiere on March 11, 2022 at SXSW and had a limited release on March 25, 2022. It released nationwide on April 8, 2022 and has earned $106.7 million worldwide. Given the events of last year’s memorable-for-the-wrong-reasons Academy Awards, everyone was likely either hoping for a buzzy reprise or (on the producers’ front) a quiet evening. As it happens, the show tended towards the latter.
And the viral, memorable moments are mostly going to be remembered for being on the positive side –– Michelle Yeoh’s historic Best Actress win, Ke Huy Quan and Brendan Fraser successfully completing their trophy tours on the biggest stage (with typically emotional responses and standing ovations) and ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ proving to be an awards powerhouse still.
Nominated for 11 Oscars, the indie sci-fi film might not have seemed to be potential Oscar bait; could a movie with dildo fights and hot dog fingers really win over stuffy voters? But win them over it did, taking home seven awards, including the aforementioned acting triumphs, Best Original Screenplay, Best Director and Best Picture. Its cast and crew were universally thrilled with their recognition and pulsed with joy.
The ceremony around those blips of happy success was more mundane, feeling like a safe overcorrection in the wake of Slap gate to ensure things ran smoothly. They did (the show actually finished early), but even with Jimmy Kimmel drawing from the book of Oscar Hosting 101 (he arrived on stage under a parachute having spoofed ‘Maverick’) it was all blandly factory produced.
Presenter banter was slight and cheesy (enlivened by Elizabeth Banks sharing the stage with an actor in a bear costume and Hugh Grant telling the audience he’s “basically a scrotum” in a gag about moisturizer use while standing next to ‘Four Weddings and a Funeral’ co-star Andie MacDowell), and things ran on rails. The musical performances ran the gamut from energetic (‘RRR’s “Naatu Naatu”, which would go on to claim the prize) to seeming more like they were set to be performed in a coffee shop (Lady Gaga’s muted, yet still effective “Hold my Hand” which ended with a sweet tribute to original ‘Top Gun’ director Tony Scott).
It might not have been the most memorable show, but some of the moments will linger longer than the sting of any slap.

The 95th Academy Awards will take place on Sunday, March 12th and with it will come the end of the 2023 award season.
Following Will Smith‘s “slap heard around the world” at last year’s Oscar ceremony, the Academy had hoped to get back to normal this year but has already had to deal with the controversy surrounding Andrea Riseborough’s surprise nomination for Best Actress for her performance in ‘To Leslie.’
With an unusual number of box office hits nominated for Best Picture this year including ‘Avatar: The Way of Water,’ Top Gun: Maverick,’ and ‘Elvis,’ and an awards season that has seen several frontrunners emerge but some categories still too close to call, Sunday’s ceremony promises to be an entertaining event, once again hosted by the returning Jimmy Kimmel.
Below are our predictions for who will win Oscars on Sunday at the 95th Academy Awards. We are only breaking down our predictions for the six major categories, Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Supporting Actress.

BEST PICTURE

In the Best Picture race, basically three frontrunners have emerged, ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once,’ ‘The Banshees of Inisherin,’ and ‘The Fabelmans,’ with ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ and to a lesser degree ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ still in the mix.
Award season began with ‘Fabelmans’ and ‘Banshees’ both winning Best Picture at the Golden Globes, but since then ‘Everything Everywhere’ has definitely taken the lead winning Best Picture from the Critics Choice, Hollywood Critics Association, Independent Spirit Awards, Screen Actors Guild, and the coveted Producers Guild Award, which is usually a pretty good precursor of who will win Best Picture at the Oscars.
It is worth mentioning that ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ won Best Picture at the BAFTA‘s, and it is not outside the realm of possibility that it could cause a surprise win, but given the Academy’s dislike for Netflix, I don’t think that will happen. And don’t forget ‘Top Gun: Maverick,’ which has been given credit for saving the film industry, and it is possible that Tom Cruise, who would win his first Oscar ever as a producer, and longtime super producer Jerry Bruckheimer will be rewarded by the Academy for their contributions.
That being said, safe money is certainly still on ‘Everything Everywhere’ taking the top prize, and I would be very surprised if that doesn’t happen.

Steven Spielberg began the award season winning Best Director from the Golden Globes, but since then The Daniels (Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert) have emerged as the frontrunners winning Best Director from Critics Choice, HCA, Independent Spirit Awards, and the Director’s Guild, which usually correctly predicts the Oscars.
While Edward Berger won Best Director from the BAFTA’s for ‘All Quiet,’ the chances of him winning are very slim, and director Martin McDonagh’s Oscar night win will most likely come in the Best Original Screenplay category for ‘Banshees.’
The Daniels biggest competition is still living legend Spielberg, who is the only filmmaker ever to be nominated in 6 different decades, which is ironic since he had a hard time being accepted by the Academy early in his career (He wasn’t even nominated for ‘The Color Purple!’). The Academy may recognize Spielberg for his very personal work on ‘Fabelmans,’ which would be his forth Oscar win for Best Director, tying him with John Ford for most wins of all time.
Awards season started off with both Colin Farrell and Austin Butler winning Golden Globes for ‘Banshees’ and ‘Elvis,’ respectively. But since then Brendan Fraser has come on strong winning The Critic’s Choice, HCA, and SAG Awards for his performance in ‘The Whale.’
‘Banshees’ won big at the BAFTA’s, but Farrell still lost to Butler, basically eliminating his chances at the Oscars. With Butler’s BAFTA and Fraser’s SAG win, it’s really too close to call, but I feel Butler will most likely take the win.
Hollywood loves a good comeback story and Fraser’s move from 90’s action star to dramatic actor after several years of obscurity and personal issues is one that the Academy might not ignore. But Butler gave the superior performance, and if Rami Malek can win Best Actor for lip-syncing as Freddy Mercury in ‘Bohemian Rhapsody‘ then Butler deserves the win for actually singing.

By far this is the closest race of the night as Cate Blanchett and Michelle Yeoh are essentially in a dead heat. Both Blanchett and Yeoh started the season strong winning Golden Globes, then Blanchett took the Critics Choice and BAFTA’s, while Yeoh took home HCA, SAG, and Independent Spirit Awards honors.
If Yeoh wins, she will be the first Asian woman in history to win Best Actress, and if ‘Everything Everywhere’ goes big on Oscar night, as I think it will, that could help put the actress over the top. Personally, I am rooting for Yeoh to be rewarded for her incredible body of work, and the momentum seems to be on her side going into Sunday.

If there has been any locked category this season it has definitely been in Best Supporting Actor as Ke Huy Quan has won almost every award there is to win including a Golden Globe, Critics Choice, HCA, Independent Spirit Awards and SAG.
Yes, Barry Keoghan won the BAFTA, but he is an Irish actor and the BAFTA’s tend to reward Europeans over Americans when they can, so I wouldn’t read too much into that.
Again, Hollywood loves a comeback story and no one (even Fraser) has a better one than Quan, who after becoming a child star thanks to ‘Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom‘ and ‘The Goonies,’ had to leave acting altogether because of a lack of roles. The actor has returned in a big way, and especially if the movie has a good night, I completely expect Quan to win, which will make him only the second Asian actor in history to do so in this category after Haing S. Ngor‘s win in 1984 for ‘The Killing Fields.’
This may be the most interesting category of the night. After being the frontrunner all season and winning a Golden Globe, Critics Choice, and HCA, Bassett lost the BAFTA to Kerry Condon for ‘Banshees.’ More importantly, she lost the coveted SAG award to Jamie Lee Curtis for ‘Everything Everywhere,’ who hadn’t won an award all season, completely throwing this category into chaos.
Again, I wouldn’t read too much into Condon’s BAFTA win, but Curtis’ win should be troubling for Bassett, as the SAG Awards are usually a good predictor for the acting categories on Oscar night. However, both actresses have long and distinguished careers, are well respected amongst their peers, and frankly, deserve to win.
If Bassett wins, she will be only the 23 Black actor to ever win a competitive acting Oscar. She would also make history as the first actor ever to win an Oscar for a Marvel movie, and only the third actor overall to ever win for appearing in a superhero movie, after actors Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix both won for playing the Joker in ‘The Dark Knight‘ and ‘Joker,’ respectively.
If ‘Everything Everywhere’ has a really big night, Curtis could win in an upset, and she does seem to have more momentum coming off of her big SAG win.
But I think safe money is still on Bassett, who will not only win for her strong performance and the longevity of her career, but also for the memory of the late ‘Black Panther‘ star Chadwick Boseman. His last opportunity to win an Oscar was taken away by the Academy a few years ago when they awarded Anthony Hopkins for ‘The Father‘ over Boseman’s final performance in ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.‘ I think that too will factor in voter’s minds, wanting to right a wrong, and reward Bassett in his memory.

Awards season is rapidly reaching its endpoint with the Oscars just a couple of weeks away, and Sunday evening it was the turn of the Screen Actors Guild Awards to recognize performers’ work.
And like some other recent ceremonies, it was a case of some repeat winners continuing their triumph tour, with the likes of Michelle Yeoh and Brendan Fraser picking up more hardware for their trophy cabinets.

Which awards did ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ win at the Screen Actors Guild ceremony?
‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ has been on something of a rollercoaster ride this season and made SAG Awards history by becoming the first movie to win all four main film categories. The ensemble win was the icing on a cake that had already seen stars Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan (who has been getting up to accept plenty of awards this season so far) and Jamie Lee Curtis win.
The movie beat out ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’, which had been tipped to at least score something, given that Martin McDonagh’s film had earned the same number of nominations as ‘EEAAO’.

What do the SAG Awards mean for the Oscars?
While they are limited in scope, the SAG Awards are certainly a boost for ‘Everything Everywhere’, which had lost out at a few recent ceremonies. Michelle Yeoh is still not a lock for Best Actress, but we can imagine bookies slashing the odds on Quan and ‘The Whale’s Fraser if they hadn’t already.
And finally, ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ picked up the Stunt Ensemble trophy, adding to its collection of largely technical recognition.

Who won the TV categories at the SAG Awards?
On the TV front, Mike White’s ‘The White Lotus’ continued its sweep of awards, while there was disappointment ahead for team ‘Better Call Saul’, as Jason Bateman won another trophy for ‘Ozark’.
‘Abbott Elementary’ kept up its own win tally, though the show’s creator and star Quinta Brunson was pipped to the Comedy Actress post by perennial winner Jean Smart of ‘Hacks’. Despite much appreciation for them both, ‘Only Murders in the Building’ duo Steve Martin and Martin Short lost out again, this time to ‘The Bear’s Jeremy Allen White.
As for the TV Movie/Limited Series awards, it was a case of movie stars doing TV as Sam Elliott took home the trophy for ‘Yellowstone’ prequel ‘1883’ and Jessica Chastain was named Best Female Actress in the category for ‘George & Tammy’. Plus, much like the movie categories, the SAG Awards are among the few awards bodies that recognize achievements in stunt work, and team ‘Stranger Things’ took that prize.
