  • A ‘Magnum, P.I.’ Sequel Series About Magnum’s Daughter Is in the Works

magnum p.i., magnum pi, tom selleck, sequel, rebootTelevision is full of reboots and revivals these days, so why not add “Magnum, P.I.” to the mix? That was the thought of ABC, which is set to make a sequel series to the Tom Selleck-starring ’80s show featuring a new leading character.

Deadline reports that the new series, now titled simply “Magnum,” will be set in the modern day and focus on the titular detective’s daughter, the now-grown Lily. Here’s the official breakdown, per Deadline:

The project … will keep the fun, action-packed style of the original as it follows Magnum’s daughter, Lily “Tommy” Magnum, who returns to Hawaii to take up the mantle of her father’s PI firm. She and her tribe of friends mix tropical beaches with the seedy underbelly of international crime and modern espionage, even as she tries to unravel the mystery of the blown spy operation that ended her career in Navy Intelligence.

The sequel series is the brainchild of Eva Longoria — who will produce through her UnbeliEVAble banner — and John Rogers (the creator of TNT series “Leverage” and “The Librarians”), who collaborated with Universal TV to come up with a concept to reboot an existing title in the company’s vast programming library. Here’s how they fleshed out that idea, according to Deadline:

They identified Magnum P.I.as particularly viable and relevant, and then Rogers unlocked a way in with Thomas Magnum’s daughter that he took custody of in the show’s finale. While the trio felt that rebooting the series with another Thomas Magnum would be daunting, focusing on his daughter was an organic way to update the franchise.

There’s no word yet on a production timeframe, though ABC has already ordered a pilot script, to be written by Rogers. Stay tuned.

  • Best of Late Night TV: Mean Tweets Music Edition, Michael Keaton’s ‘Birdman’ Kid Theater (VIDEO)

If you’re like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don’t worry; we’ve got you covered. Here’s the best of what happened last night on late night.

“Birdman” star Michael Keaton was on “The Tonight Show” Monday night, and Jimmy Fallon said he wanted to see how good the Oscar nominee could be. So Michael and Jimmy re-enacted scenes from “Birdman” but not the real movie – a version written by school-children. The kids were just asked to write scenes for a movie called “Birdman.” So watch them do some Kid Theater. Telling you, some of these “Birdman” scripts are gold. Keaton crushes it. Amazing. Jimmy Kimmel had another unmissable round of Mean Tweets, this time in a Music Edition read off by Josh Groban, Drake, Lady Gaga, Sam Smith, Jessie J, Blake Shelton, Haim, Wiz Khalifa, Ed Sheeran, Iggy Azalea, Pitbull, Sia, Childish Gambino, Britney Spears, Ariana Grande, Jason Aldean, 5 Seconds Of Summer, Katy Perry and Psy. Some of the tweets are genuinely mean (and gross!), but others are just laugh-out-loud funny. Rob Gronkowski was also on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” and he read aloud from a fan’s work of erotic fiction called “A Gronking to Remember.” Apparently this is just Book 1 from this fan’s series. His mom was in the audience hearing all of this. Hilarious! Eva Longoria was also on JKL and she explained her Super Bowl injury from her party. She was so worked up by the final play she fell on her friend and cut herself. Bob Costas was on “Conan,” so of course he talked about both DeflateGate and the Super Bowl’s final play. Bob joins the ranks of those who believe if the Seahawks had handed the ball to Marshawn Lynch, they’d be the Super Bowl champs right now. But Bob gave props to Malcolm Butler. And we’re all sick of the deflated football talk, but Bob said DeflateGate was no big deal and mostly about the modern 24/7 news cycle.

Eddie Redmayne was also on “Conan” and talked about his killer abs in “Jupiter Ascending.” He plays a vain space tycoon so he worked out and got fit and it’s only blink-and-miss in the film. So Conan got Eddie a gift — a huge portrait of his character with the abs. They also discussed Eddie’s freckles, which have helped him get roles, and it was noted that Eddie is actually a dead ringer for Jennifer Garner Affleck. There’s video evidence from one of his early roles!

John Oliver was on “Late Night with Seth Meyers” – and he’s such a good watch. Always. He and Seth discussed the Super Bowl, Katy Perry’s halftime show, and how much it hurts when your sports team loses. He really lost it when England lost to Germany during the World Cup. He’s a Liverpool fan and he met the team, but it didn’t go well. He saw them in the locker room and the entire team came out naked – “waving a handless hello” – and it changed his relationship with them. Ha! John obviously talked about “Last Week Tonight” and its new season. “Jungle” Jack Hanna was on “Late Show” with David Letterman and Dave got to hang out with an adorable “bush baby.” The cutie sat on Dave’s new hat and started jumping all over him. Apparently bush babies pee on themselves to wash themselves? They also brought a venomous cobra out. Poor guy didn’t want to be there, and Dave wasn’t very welcoming. Dave also addressed the big Super Bowl shocker and shared the “Top 10 Pete Carroll Excuses”: Sean Hayes guest-hosted the “Late Late Show” and guest Marion Cotillard talked about the first guy she kissed on screen. Apparently it was bad. Really bad.

  • 11 Things We Learned at the NBC Winter TCA Panels: Scoop on ‘Parks & Rec,’ ‘Chicago Fire,’ and More

2015 Winter TCA Tour - Day 10The Winter Television Critics Association Press Tour is underway and Moviefone sat in for the panels at NBC’s day to present their upcoming roster of programming. We got some scoop on new shows and returning favorites — here are the highlights!

    1. Eva Longoria Returns to TV
The “Desperate Housewives” alum’s comedy “Telenovela,” about a daytime actress and her popular show, has a 13-episode order already.

    2. “Heroes Reborn” Has a New Star
And his name is Zachary Levi. The “Chuck” actor will join NBC’s upcoming miniseries, a continuation of “Heroes.”

    3. The Next NBC Live Musical Will Be…
“The Wiz” or “The Music Man.” They’re still deciding. Which would you prefer?

    4. An Undergound Railroad series?
Another musical endeavor for the network will be “Freedom Run,” a musical miniseries that will focus on stories from the Underground Railroad and feature music from Stevie Wonder.

    5. Dolly Parton Has Some TV Tricks Up Her Bedazzled Sleeve
In other music news, county legend Dolly Parton is developing a series of TV movies based on her life and her work. We’re not complaining…

    6. No More Cosby
NBC Chairman Bob Greenblatt says it’s “safe to say” the network won’t be working with the comedian again. “When that many people come out and have such similar complaints, it became a tainted situation,” he remarked when asked about scrapping NBC’s previously planned Bill Cosby project.

    7. Chicago… Med?
There’s already “Chicago PD” and “Chicago Fire,” so why not add “Chicago Med” in the successful mix? Well, that’s the plan.

    8. “Hannibal” Will Return…
This summer. You’ll have to hold tight a little bit for Season 3, everyone.

    9. “The Slap” Is an Interesting Choice for Network
“The Slap,” a miniseries comprised of an impressive cast that includes Uma Thurman, Peter Saarsgard, Thandie Newton, Zachary Quinto, and Melissa George, revolves around the consequences that arise from one parent’s slapping of another family’s child. The “slap” is really just a catalyst for the events that follow, and the complex issues that are raised throughout. “For the first time, we have this luxurious, poetic dialogue… and we’re on network TV,” George noted of the tricky concept.

    10. More “Chicago Fire” / “Chicago PD” Crossovers
“You cant do it too often, but two, three times a season is catnip,” says Dick Wolf.

    11. We’re Going to Miss “Parks & Rec”
OK, we already knew this. But after watching the hilarious cast in action discussing their favorite memories and experience on the show, the whole room felt the impending loss even more. Some highlights of their panel included Amy Poehler expressing her love for the idea of “treat yourself,” Chris Pratt’s vocal hatred of mean internet commenters (“screw everybody who reads comments!”), and producer Mike Schur’s reveal that he originally planned to have Andy Dwyer end up as mayor. We also learned that everyone will return for the finale. Schur mentioned that “the last moments of the show are everybody in the same place at the same time.”

Keep checking back for more news straight from the Winter TCA press tour panels!
